Welcome to the latest issue of The Beachcomber’s Health & Wellness Guide, our annual directory to many of the people on the island who are dedicated to helping people get healthy and stay well.

Vashon is fortunate to have a variety of health professionals: doctors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, counselors, exercise professionals and more. We hope people will turn to this guide when they need care along life’s path, from welcoming a newborn baby to caring for an elderly parent, and all the mileposts in between.

She uses a combination of acupuncture and Oriental medicine to help patients achieve a state of health and wellness. From 2005 to 2012, Berman was a practicing member of the Healing Arts Center on Orcas Island.

Berman graduated from Southwest Acupuncture College’s Santa Fe, New Mexico, campus in 1998 with a master’s of science degree in Oriental Medicine.

She also has a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Florida and graduated from the Florida School of Massage/Florida Institute of Natural Health. She has practiced massage therapy for 10 years. Over the past five years, she has also practiced onboard several luxury cruise ships. She has traveled and worked with people from all over the world and has explored natural healing techniques from several different cultures.

Her specialties are in pain management and family and women’s health, including fertility. Until recently, she had a long-time affiliation with Bastyr University and the University of Washington Medical School. Kaetz began her acupuncture studies after 25 years of work in the field of community and public health. Levin’s practice includes comprehensive, effective treatment for pain, injuries, digestive, respiratory and menstrual disorders, allergies, headaches, insomnia and many other complaints.

As an acupuncturist at Fairfax Hospital for many years, he also specializes in Chinese medical treatment for mental and emotional health. Addiction Services

The program treats all addictions, including eating disorders, and believes that addictive behaviors can be understood, addressed and managed through the combined efforts of dually trained and licensed mental health and substance-use disorder clinical staff and a collaborative team of alternative holistic referrals in the community.

Available services include interventions, extended and comprehensive assessment and referrals, youth treatment with the evidence-based Seven Challenges Program, professional laboratory-tested urinalysis and a continuum of care that stretches from affected others to communitybased aftercare. Therapy groups include codependency treatment, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, skill-building, food and mood education, nicotine dependency, adult recovery support and a range of psycho-educational topics specifically designed for current clients.

In 2011, HART launched HART Academy — an on-site holistic school that meets the needs of high school girls who feel bored or overwhelmed in more chaotic class settings.

caring, community-wide services. It is the only nonprofit senior living facility on Vashon Island, providing for Vashon’s seniors by offering a continuum of loving, supportive care for those at home on its campus and elsewhere in the community.

VCC offers a host of programs and services for the island community, including Beardsley Terrace Skilled Nursing, which also offers rehabilitative services under Medicare Parts A and B for people who need physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy; Aspiri Garden Assisted Living apartments, which offer as little or as much help as a person wants or needs, and Break Time Adult Day Care, where adults living independently in the community can come for drop-in care, activities and friendship.

The caring staff, wonderful food, full activities program, health care support and beautiful environment are just a few of the amenities VCC offers.

Children are screened as needed in the areas of vision, hearing, motor coordination, communication and social/emotional and concept development.

This screening helps the school district and parents identify children who may have special learning needs and match them with programs that will help them thrive.

Parents who have questions or concerns about a child’s development are invited to call to schedule an appointment or make a referral. NOTE: Child Find for children under the age of 3 is now conducted through the King County Department of Developmental Disabilities. The number to call is (800) 756-5437. Modalities include hot packs, ice, massage, manipulation, corrective stretches and exercises.

Emphasis is on posture and biomechanics, assisting with patients’ current needs, educating them so they may avoid re-injury and freeing them from dependence on doctors and/or therapists.

He practices traditional chiropractic and focuses on the identification and correction of spinal misalignments called subluxations.

Subluxations cause nerve interference. This nerve interference disconnects the body from the control and coordination of the central nervous system, resulting in poor function of the organs and tissues of the body. These weakened areas of the body are prone to injury and infection. Dr. Curtin uses his hands to adjust the spine and reduce nerve interference and help return normal function to promote healing.

In the time that Dr.Curtin has been in practice on Vashon, he has helped a variety of islanders, including young athletes, pregnant women and firefighters. Dr. Curtin loves what he does and considers himself lucky to have found Vashon.

Vashon Youth & Family Services Vashon Youth & Family Services is the only licensed mental health agency on Vashon and serves any Islander who wants or needs help, regardless of his or her ability to pay. VYFS therapists help children, families and individuals cope with life’s challenges and stressors through individual and family counseling, therapeutic groups, social skill-building groups for children and youth and an internship program.

Voice of Vashon 1650 AM Emergency Broadcast System This is what we do: 1) Basic Traveler’s Information Service [TIS]. This is a pre-recorded message that provides basic information to travelers visiting Vashon and Maury Islands. It continually repeats 24/7 when there are no emergencies or travel updates on the islands.

2) Travel Advisories: These include road closures and significant ferry service interruptions; anything that may impede routine travel on and off the island.

[When an emergency or a travel advisory does occur and is recorded, the standard TIS message is suspended and only the emergency or advisory information is heard on the radio. After the emergency is over and the posting removed, the standard messaging turns back on.]

3) Emergency broadcasts. Emergency announcements occur whenever there are power outages, significant storms or other issues that significantly impact the island’s normal activities.

If an emergency happens, be sure to tune to 1650 AM.

S.W. WIC provides free vouchers for nutritious food as well as nutrition education and breastfeeding support for qualifying lower income pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants and children.

Services include access to a registered dietitian, social worker and public health nurse.

An application worker is also available every other month to help with DSHS applications for medical coupons, a basic food program and temporary cash assistance for needy families.

On average, each week the food bank provides clients with a minimum of 60 pounds worth of assorted groceries, including a wide variety of cereals, proteins, fruits, vegetables and dairy products. This includes fresh and frozen protein as well as fresh produce.

The food bank staff and volunteers do not ask for identification, proof of address or income, or any other explanations of need for services, and always welcome those who come in and treat them with dignity and respect.

In addition to its regular distribution hours, the food bank provides a delivery service for homebound individuals and is open from 4:30 to 5 p.m Wednesdays for seniors and those who are disabled.
