n this country, if you’re a man who has had sex with another man even once since 1977, FDA policy bans you from donating blood.

But Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) would like to see that policy changed, and the Puget Sound Blood Center wholeheartedly agrees.

A June 11 letter penned by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) and signed by Murray calls the current restrictions on gay men donating blood “indefensible,” noting that since the FDA allows a man who has had sex with an HIV-positive woman to give blood after waiting only one year, the current lifetime ban on gay men creates a sizable and unnecessary double standard. The letter argues for an adjustment to the deferment period for men who’ve had sex with men, and for the development of alternate blooddonor criteria for this group.

In Washington state, Referendum 74 could quash the same-sexmarriage law signed in February by Gov. Christine Gregoire. The referendum officially qualified for the November ballot on June 12 after sponsors collected 247,331 signatures. Some of the push for R-74 in Washington has come from religious groups, but Perry says Christianity is actually in line with LGBT goals. “MCC churches believe in Christian salvation for the GLBT community,” Perry says. “Where you find oppression, you will find deliverance.”

Perry says most of the gay community feels alienated by the church, but MCC’s goal is to counteract that reaction. “We want them to know they can have a spiritual walk,” Perry says.

Perry says he has seen this type of openness in other denominations as well.

For example, some Mormons have begun to walk away from an ultraconservative, critical view of gays and lesbians, as seen on June 3 when 300 Mormon families marched alongside LGBT groups in Salt Lake City’s Pride parade. Also, as of 2010, about 40 percent of Unitarian Universalist churches welcome the LGBT community.

“Knowing us is to love us, and getting to know gay people makes all the difference in the world.”

To move toward the legalization of same-sex marriage and expansion of gay rights, Perry says the best approach is to spread awareness.

“I have always maintained that if all of us would come out of the closet, a majority of Americans would know someone gay,” says Perry. “Knowing us is to love us, and getting to know gay people makes all the difference in the world.” ALLISON THOMASSEAU

A couple of years ago, when California NAACP head Alice Huffman endorsed marijuana legalization in her state, more than 20 African-American leaders called for her resignation.

“Why would the state NAACP advocate for blacks to stay high?” one church leader said.

“It’s going to cause crime to go up. There will be more drug babies.”

So it’s no insignificant thing that three African-American pastors have now endorsed Washington state’s legalization measure: Last week, the Rev. Leslie Braxton of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, the Rev. Carl Livingston of Kingdom Christian Center, and the Rev. Steve Baber of Skyway United Methodist Church all put their names behind Initiative 502.

Alison Holcomb, head of the initiative campaign, concedes that African-Americans

have been “a very tough community to bring on board.” Many, she says, “view drugs as destroying their community.” But legalization campaigners made a deliberate effort to reach out to African-American leaders, recently hosting luncheons for pastors, one with Huffman and one with Paul Butler, an African-American former U.S. Attorney and author who’s become a crusader against mass incarceration.

“The traditional face of the marijuanalegalization movement” doesn’t work very well in the black community, Holcomb allows, so these speakers undoubtedly had an appeal that well-meaning white liberals couldn’t summon. And the fact is, the legalization debate can be effectively framed in racial terms. As the I-502 campaign’s release about the endorsements puts it: “In Washington, an African-American adult is three times as likely as a white person to be arrested for marijuana possession, three times as likely to be charged, and three times as likely to be convicted, despite the fact that white Washingtonians use marijuana at a slightly higher rate.”

The release also quotes Rev. Braxton: “It’s no longer enough to say the War on Drugs has been a failure. We have to recognize that it has done damage, especially to black Americans, and we have to change course.

Marijuana-law enforcement has become a pretext for pushing people into the criminaljustice system, where they get branded with criminal records that turn them into secondclass citizens facing additional barriers to education and employment.”

Rev. Baber adds that drug enforcement has turned into the “reincarnation of Jim Crow.

ne day last July, FBI agent Ted Halla flew to Beijing to meet a man who had eluded authorities for a decade. In person, Justin Solondz wasn’t what Halla was expecting. Wearing khakis and a black shirt, the 31-year-old fugitive was smaller and leaner than he’d imagined. Solondz’s light-brown hair—which once hung to his shoulders, and which, with his beard and handsome face, conspired to make him appear Jesus-like—now took the form of a buzz cut.

He spoke Chinese—badly in Solondz’s view, impressively in Halla’s. When he spoke English, he did so with a thick accent that to the agent’s ears sounded British, even though he knew his fugitive had grown up on America’s East Coast.

Perhaps most surprising was Solondz’s demeanor. “Of all the people I’ve ever arrested, I’ve probably never been greeted as warmly,” says Halla.

Solondz, it seemed, was ready to move on with his life. And no wonder. He had spent the previous two years in a Chinese prison where, according to a court memo submitted by his lawyer, he was sometimes chained inside a glass-enclosed cell and fed only when he met his daily quota of shelled peas.

While being transferred into U.S. custody may have come as a relief, it also came at the cost of being held accountable for one of the most notorious crimes in Pacific Northwest history. In 2001, Solondz and four other environmental activists set fire to the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture as a protest against genetic engineering.

The targeting of an esteemed academic institution—carried out on the same day as a related arson at an Oregon tree farm—made national news. It propelled a major law-enforcement effort to catch

“Of all the people I’ve ever arrested, I’ve probably never been greeted as warmly,” says Halla of Solondz. the saboteurs, dubbed “Operation Backfire,” and a fierce debate about the meaning of terrorism. Authorities labeled the arsonists terrorists, a term the press turned into the catchier “eco-terrorists,” while activists warned of a “green scare” and argued that property crimes did not constitute terrorism—an argument that had particular resonance after 9/11.

Now that the feds had Solondz, the last of the UW arsonists still free, the case could finally close. He had already been fingered by his former cohorts, including an ex-girlfriend, Briana Waters, who’d promised to cooperate with Solondz’s prosecution as part of a plea deal. In March, after accepting his own plea bargain, Solondz received a seven-year prison sentence. On June 22, Waters will learn her own fate at a scheduled sentencing.

On websites devoted to radical activism, Waters is now labeled a “snitch” and Solondz a “political prisoner.” Yet one of the most stinging indictments of their

fiery political statement can be found in Solondz’s own legal papers. The crime was “stunning” in its “political tonedeafness,” reads his sentencing memorandum. “The actual goal of making a notable public statement in favor of the environO APIR ment morphed into the polar-opposite conH S INA sequence of completely discrediting the local

BY N activist fringes of the environmental movement.”

Indeed, the underground cell to which Solondz belonged—affiliated with both the Earth and Animal Liberation fronts—intended the blazing double whammy to be an inspiration for a groundswell of similar so-called “direct actions.” Instead, the fire marked the beginning of the underground movement’s downfall.

rowing up in New Jersey, Solondz was an arty and athletic honors student, with what one old school friend called in court documents an “effortless popularity and social grace.” Accepted into such prestigious institutions as the University of Chicago and the Rhode Island School of Design, Solondz ultimately chose to attend Evergreen State College in Olympia, then as now famous for its freewheeling curriculum and activist-minded student body.

According to Kim Marks, a fellow student, Solondz seemed to thrive in his new home. “He had a passion for life, just a lot of positive energy,” says Marks, who now runs an eco-friendly sex shop in Portland. One time, she remembers, Solondz decided he wanted to learn how to can food, starting with applesauce, so he went door to door asking for the fruit. “He ended up with a wheelbarrow full of apples,” she says. “He didn’t just make a little applesauce. He made a lot of applesauce.”

Solondz’s passion soon found a home in Olympia’s activist community, to which Marks also belonged. It was only a few years after the passage of controversial legislation that allowed timber sales in areas previously off-limits. Environmentalists were incensed. “There was completely lawless logging happening in the Northwest,” says Marks, who claims loggers were deliberately setting fire to forests so the trees could be declared “salvage.”

That perceived travesty, and the overall call to save what remained of old-growth forests, turned the Northwest into a mecca for young activists. Marks moved up from California when she was 18, living first in Eugene. Leslie Pickering, who later became a press officer for the Earth Liberation Front, also left California for Oregon as a teen, and found a lot of like-minded people when he arrived. Anti-logging blockades and tree-sits were so common, he says, that “you could pick and choose between a halfdozen protests an hour’s drive from Portland.”

While not quite as intense as in neighboring Oregon, forest battles were heating up in Washington too. Marks says an Olympia-based group known as the Cascadia Defense Network began holding protests, focusing on logging in the nearby Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Solondz joined the group, as did Waters.

Solondz and Waters, four years his senior, had become a striking and seemingly well-matched couple. She had flowing blond hair, and like him was arty and an East Coast transplant. Hailing from the Philadelphia suburbs, she played the violin, studied film, and was a passionate idealist. » CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Jim Dawson, Solondz’s onetime roommate at Evergreen and now campaign director for the liberal activist group Fuse, recalls spending hours talking with his friend about “how to create social change.” Together they worked on what Dawson says were successful campaigns to start composting and recycling programs at Evergreen, while Waters participated in campus animalrights and environmental groups for which she held vegan potlucks.

In 1999, when Waters was a senior, the Network decided to hold a tree-sit on Watch Mountain, located outside the tiny Lewis County town of Randle. Thick with towering Douglas firs, the scenic area was due to be turned over to Plum Creek Timber in a land exchange with the U.S. Forest Service. The activists intended to stop the deal.

Not just participants, Solondz and Waters also filmed the entire half-year protest, which Waters eventually turned into a documentary and senior project. The film, Watch, captures the dozen or so young tree-sitters hoisting plywood platforms up among the branches. “We don’t want your kind of business here any more,” one resident intoned at a town meeting captured on tape. The forests around Randle had already been heavily logged, leaving clear-cut eyesores, and some blamed Plum Creek for landslides on other parcels of land where it had worked.

The cultivation of townsfolk was deliberate.

Marks recalls how she and other activists set out an information table in front of the local grocery store, knocked on doors to explain their cause, and volunteered at the town food bank to generate goodwill. Local residents responded by bringing food and firewood to the tree-sitters. According to Marks, one church even donated a pew for the activists to sit on when they weren’t in the trees.

“This was a unique and unprecedented effort,” says Dave Werntz, science and conservation director for prominent environmental organization Conservation Northwest. It marked the first time, he says, that environmental activists had been able to ally themselves with a blue-collar community. More significant, “it did ultimately lead to the end of old-growth logging in Washington state.”

Having lost the PR war, Plum Creek negotiated a settlement, agreeing to take Watch Mountain out of the deal. It was November and a foot of snow had fallen, along with

cess, Werntz says, environmentalists took its spirit of collaboration one step further and made a surprising discovery when they began negotiating directly with timber companies.

“The timber industry was saying we don’t want old growth any more. We’ve already retooled,” says Werntz. Having logged most of the region’s old growth, companies had put equipment in their mills suitable for cutting younger, thinner trees.

But if Randle was a victory, it soon lost its shine. “The tragedy is that that history is now tainted by the reckless behavior of some of the folks involved,” says Werntz. “Somehow these guys got off-track and missed the relevance of one of the most important things that’s happened in the environmental movement.” Instead of pursuing the kind of collaboration that won the day, he says, Solondz and Waters “did exactly the opposite: vigilantism.”

To Marks, though, the takeaway was very different. The timber companies “didn’t come to the table willingly . . . what worked was leverage.” The activists, not all love and music, had also put further pressure on Plum Creek by occupying their Seattle offices and shouting “Whatever it takes!”

Solondz and Waters apparently thought it was going to take a lot more.

were anarchists, many hailing from Eugene. Some were. But they also were part of a growing underground movement that, in the words of a communiqué written soon after, “strategically and specifically” engaged in “direct action against corporate interests.”

Those “direct actions” had been going on for years. In 1995, underground activists firebombed a Eugene ice-cream producer called Dutch Girl Dairy. The facility saw its trucks spraypainted with the slogans “ALF,” “Go Vegan,” and “Dairy = Death.” A year later, arson destroyed a U.S. Forest Service station in Detroit, Ore., about 100 miles northeast of Eugene. The arsonists left spray-painted messages there too: “Earth Liberation Front” and “Stop Raping Our Forests.”

“That was the first time in U.S. history that you see arson attributed to the ELF,” says Agent Halla, who worked on Operation Backfire from the FBI’s Seattle office.

“Prior to that, the ELF was only in Europe.”

Not much is known about exactly how Solondz and Waters hooked up with “the Family,” a cell of roughly 20 members. But a leading figure lived right in their backyard.

William Rodgers, also known as “Avalon,” was an Olympia resident. Charismatic and a decade older than most other participants, Harvey says, he was considered an “upper statesman.” He had participated in the Warner Creek blockade and the WTO vandalism, and had written several manuals for wouldbe saboteurs that had become Internet classics, including Setting Fires with Electrical Timers: An Earth Liberation Front Guide.

Rodgers recruited a number of the cell’s members. And in April 2001, according to government documents and Solondz’s and Waters’ own concise accounts in their plea agreements, he asked both if they would take part in an arson. She was 25. He was 21.

They had known Rodgers at least a year, according to their plea agreements. But if

they had been members of Rodgers’ cell prior to that day in April, they had been marginal ones. Neither had attended any of the five so-called “book-club” meetings at which the cell had made plans—secret affairs in five different states, one devoted to making firebombs, another to e-mail encryption methods.

Solondz, though, may have participated in one prior action. Another member, testifying in Waters’ 2008 trial under the terms of a plea bargain, said she, Solondz, and six to eight others had sneaked onto a Monsanto farm in eastern Washington in August 2000.

Wearing only black, the group accidentally vandalized a barley field before destroying their intended target: five acres of genetically engineered canola plants, which they pulled out of the ground like weeds.

The near-mistake was telling. For all their proficiency with methods of sabotage—and Halla says what distinguished the cell was how good they became at arson—the activists could sometimes be clueless about who and what they were targeting. This flaw was never more apparent than when Solondz and Waters carried out their most significant act of destruction.

enetic engineering didn’t register as a burning concern for everyone in the cell. But according to Kolar, the high-tech executive, a couple of people pushed it. “This group as a whole had agreed on trying to pick a single topic to focus on that we thought might be winnable, and genetic engineering was decided to be that topic,” she said while testifying at Waters’ trial as part of her plea bargain.

“There was a fair amount of public sympathy against it.”

What the group needed next was a target. Kolar went on to describe how she was approached by a member of the cell early in 2001 with an idea for an action at UW. He took her on a bike ride to the Center for Urban Horticulture. “He didn’t have a whole lot of information at the time,” Kolar recalled.

That would be Toby Bradshaw, a plant biologist whose name had also come up during one of the cell’s book-club meetings.

But the evolving plot against him was apparently discussed by only a few people. Lacey Phillabaum, another cell member who at one point had edited the Earth First! Journal in Eugene, testified that she was approached on a Thursday in May, just 10 days before the arson, with an invitation to participate, and was initially not given any details other than that she would be driving north.

Phillabaum headed to Olympia that weekend with other cell members in a drive soundtracked by the alternative group Elastica. At a Denny’s, she testified, she met the four others involved in the arson: Rodgers, Kolar, Waters, and Solondz.

Phillabaum said they stayed at Waters’ house, where details of the plan began to take shape. In a garage that had been turned into a “clean room,” with plastic draped

ing on a dead-end street near the Center for Urban Horticulture.

Solondz, according to his plea agreement, stayed with the car. Waters, according to hers, also stayed behind in the bushes to serve as a lookout. The other three crew members walked down a grassy slope to the building, where Kolar went to work on Bradshaw’s office window, which, despite her plan, ended up shattering.

After the firebombs were set, the crew hurried back into the car, which Solondz soon scraped against another that was doubleparked on a residential street. “There was panic,” Phillabaum recalled. They pulled over.

For a few short minutes, everyone listened to their plan unfolding on a radio scanner. They heard a firefighter talk about how he was on the roof above the fire. Being a science building, he was worried there might be chemicals down below. “It was terrifying to hear him in this dangerous situation,” Phillabaum later recalled.

Rodgers, on the other hand, “seemed excited.”

over the walls to keep them clear of fingerprints, Solondz told them about the new and improved firebombs he had designed, which used dumpster-dived water bladders to hold the devices rather than the less-portable buckets used by previous arsonists. Later that weekend, Kolar, who had just taken a class at Seattle Stained Glass, told the group how she intended to score a window of Bradshaw’s office with a technique that would keep the glass from shattering.

The crew returned to Olympia the following weekend. Phillabaum testified that at one point she and Waters went into the clean room, ostensibly to finish building the firebombs. “My feeling was that it was a method of getting our hands dirty so that we were as implicated as other people were in the crime,” she said. To Phillabaum, the devices looked like alarm clocks with wires sticking out of them, nestled in “sandwich-sized” Tupperware containers which held the fuel.

After a couple of hours of sleep, they sat down and crafted a note, their explanation to the world of why they thought the deliberately set blaze had been necessary.

“Bradshaw . . . continues to unleash mutant genes into the environment that is [sic] certain to cause irreversible harm to forest ecosystems . . . As long as universities continue to pursue this reckless ‘science,’ they run the risk of suffering severe losses. Our message remains clear, we are determined to stop genetic engineering.”

The damage, eventually estimated at $6 million, was extensive. A library of rare horticultural manuscripts dating back to the 16th century had been ravaged. A variety of researchers lost work, including, according to Bradshaw, a colleague’s slides of Mt. St. Helens after the 1980 volcanic eruption.

In contrast, Bradshaw, a blunt and irascible 55-year-old, says the fire “had no affect at all on my research. Zero.” The poplar trees Bradshaw was growing and studying weren’t in the building, and he’d backed up all his data on tapes. His losses amounted to a few books and papers, even though, as his blown-out office window revealed, “It was pretty clear I was the target.”

It was also pretty clear that the arsonists had made a big mistake. It was true, as his detractors liked to point out, that Bradshaw got a lot of his funding from timber companies. And those timber companies were interested in his research in part because they potentially could have used the results to genetically engineer new kinds of trees. But, as the press immediately announced, contrary to what the activists believed, Bradshaw was not in fact doing genetic engineering. He was instead growing hybrid poplars using traditional cross-breeding methods.

At the time, he was, in his words, a “basic researcher” who simply wanted to understand how plants work. Which isn’t to say he has a problem with genetic engineering.

In perhaps the greatest irony of the arson’s aftermath, Bradshaw says that now he does it “all the time.”

Today, Bradshaw studies the genetic difference between scarlet and pink monkey flowers, for which he traded poplars years ago— not because of the arson, he says, but because they’re much easier to study. The trees have a growing cycle of four years; the flowers, only 90 days. And while he still cross-breeds, he also uses genetic engineering to speed up what would otherwise be the time-consuming process of verifying his work. As he puts it, to check that one of his assumptions is right, he “just pops [the gene] right in.”

radshaw and his flowers hardly conjure up Frankensteinian notions of “risky science.” Yet plenty of people continue to believe that genetic engineering is just that.

Public sentiment has grown more suspicious since the UW arsonists judged it a winnable cause, even as the technology’s use has become more pervasive.

Michael Hansen, senior staff scientist at the Consumers Union, the organization that publishes Consumer Reports, points to what he calls a “huge expansion” in the use of pesticides brought by the technology. That’s because agribusiness genetically engineers crops to make them resistant to herbicides. A movement to label transgenic foods resulted in a dozen legislative bills across the country over the past year, including one which failed in Washington.

Yet that movement is very much aboveground. In contrast, despite the occasional arson or animal “release” at a fur farm, the underground movement is, as Pickering puts it, “at a weak point.”

In the Northwest, the movement’s decline began shortly after the UW arson. Pickering left Portland in the summer of 2002 to pursue a master’s in history and journalism and start a radical bookstore in Buffalo, N.Y. At the time of his exodus, he says, “the scene was blowing up. Everyone was moving out. It was very apparent there was a massive crackdown.”

A task force of local and federal officials began to question activists. Eventually, authorities pressured one, the formerly homeless Ferguson, into wearing a wire and traveling around the country to capture his former cell members on tape. The feds made their first arrests in December 2005, netting six people including Rodgers, the respected elder statesman, who later suffocated himself in an Arizona prison. A month later authorities indicted six more cell members. The majority of the UW arsonists remained free, although not for long.

As alleged terrorists, the activists faced life sentences in maximum-security prisons—an exponentially stiffer punishment than most arsonists received in the federal system. One by one, many of the defendants agreed to plea bargains under which they testified against people they had sworn never to rat out.

The stereotype of butoh includes very, very serious dancers, covered in rice flour and doing painful movement really slowly. But while the dance form, originally developed in postwar Japan, does have a tradition of deeply felt, emotional work, any concert that includes a dance titled Can’t Sleep Clowns Will Eat Me— with music by Screaming Jay Hawkins!—has to make room for a sense of humor. Gratifyingly, the Seattle Pride Parade seems to be established downtown where it belongs, after years of internecine bickering over whether it should get out of the Capitol Hill ghetto. Now all we have to do is make it interesting. The mainstreaming of gay culture inevitably means the dulling of whatever edge Pride weekends had; what once was a defiantly raised fist is now lawn chairs in the shade. Even this year’s political battle, with same-sex marriage rights on the November ballot, is a struggle toward coziness: Rah, rah, domesticity! Not that I want the clock turned back—gee, if only we were more oppressed, Pride would be more charged with meaning. That the whole thing’s grown stodgy is something to celebrate, I guess; we’re slowly winning the fight not to be unusual. Now the parade is no more subversive than Veterans Day in Cedar Rapids, and the festival is basically the Bite of Seattle with less food and better abs. Parade: 11 a.m. from Fourth Ave. & Union St. to Denny Way, ending at Seattle Center, where festivities follow from noon–8 p.m.

He Captures the Castle

Hayao Miyazaki is much more than

Japan’s Walt Disney. He combines epic vision, animist mythology, environmentally conscious subtext, and a dedication to hand-drawn animation maintained in the face of the digital revolution. Miyazaki believes that children deserve stories with depth and emotional complexity, as well as imagination and excitement—and that’s what he delivers. Along with his most celebrated films (the magical My Neighbor Totoro, his environmentalist epic Princess Mononoke, his dark fairy tale Spirited Away), Castles in the Sky: Miyazaki,

Why is Kerry Killinger not in jail? I read Kirsten Grind’s comprehensive new account, based on her reporting for Puget Sound Business Journal, in a weekend. Monday morning, I was no less angry. The Lost Bank (Simon & Schuster, $27) relates how Killinger assumed control of the small, regional, conservatively run—but fun, in a banker’s kind of fun—thrift called Washington Mutual, founded in 1889. You know the rest of the story in outline, and Grind supplies the granular detail as to how WaMu grew and grew, expanded into subprime mortgages and liar loans, briefly attained Killinger’s goal of becoming the Costco of banking via “the power of yes,” then blew up with the 2008 real-estate bubble, becoming the largest bank failure in U.S. history. (No government bailout for you, WaMu!) Today a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, Grind spreads the balance sheets from wall-to-wall. Even if she never got face time with Killinger, she dutifully interviewed those who worked under the weirdly vanilla, nonconfrontational leader—and the guy who hired him, to his everlasting regret.

check out the eccentric My Neighbors the Yamadas, a comic strip–style family comedy that translates quite effectively to suburban America. It’s directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata. All 15 titles will be screened from 35mm prints, in both dubbed and subtitled editions.

Whatever happened to that Jarhead guy, Anthony Swofford, after the success of his 2003 Gulf War memoir and the subsequent 2005 movie? Well, he admits, there was an unsuccessful stab at a novel, a lot of women, plenty of cheating on women (“I was a Zen master at infidelity”), much drinking, and a fair amount of drugs. Swofford is unsparing about his shortcomings in his new memoir Hotels, Hospitals and Jails (Twelve, $26.99), but he’s not really its main subject. Instead it’s the testy relationship he has with his dad, a Vietnam War vet slowly succumbing to lung failure, that drives the book forward. Not all of it is good; Swofford is often grasping with his prose, but then he’ll turn around and mock his Hemingway tendencies. Hotels is anecdotal, almost a little black book, but it feels heartfelt and honest. Some vignettes, like drunk-driving his BMW into a tree, stand on their own as short stories.

Even better is the account of how his grandparents met in ’40s Alabama. Later, Swofford writes, “My father built a roof of shame for his family to live under.” In place of the shooting war he missed in the first Gulf War, he gets an ongoing war with his pa, starting in childhood and lasting through his hard-living 30s. And when the two pack into a Winnebago (“the truth machine”) for road trips together, you can guess their destination: Reconciliation, 271 pages ahead.

Another ex-WaMu’er tells Grind he came to see adjustable-rate mortgages as an evil product, but they were approved by a surpassingly bland, opaque CEO. (One who walked away with $22 million in severance, it should be noted.) There has to be morality to moneylending or, failing that, regulation. In staging Stephen Adly Guirgis’ 2000 prison drama, Azeotrope has knocked this production out of the park, swinging at rich and thorny material with explosive honesty and superb acting. Hours later, I’m still trembling, stomach clenched, mind scrambling to sort out the Möbius-like succession of ideas. Unlike such musty “God plays” as C.S. Lewis’ Freud’s Last Session (revived at Taproot this spring), which dutifully chaperone us through drawing-room theology, Jesus Hopped concerns dangerous and imperiled everymen. The story is set in the Rikers Island cellblock of born-again serial killer Lucius (played by a charisma grenade with one name: Dumi) and lapsed Catholic Angel Cruz (Richard Nguyen Sloniker).

Awaiting extradition to Florida (which has the death penalty), Lucius spends his time in the sunny prison yard praising God and working out. (Unless he’s being abused by the sadistic “I worship the Devil” guard played by Ray Tagavilla.) New boy Angel, in for shooting a cult leader who “stole” his best friend, accepts Lu’s kindness but not his proselytizing. Their debate, plush and profane, bridges the concrete slabs of Deanna Zibello’s versatile set. Meanwhile, Angel’s lawyer Mary Jane (Angela DiMarco, in a rare serious role) preps him for trial despite an intriguing technicality that eventually catches up with them. The tale brims with backstory, twists, and provocative questions.

Some are resolved by character monologues that break the proscenium—usually a pet peeve of mine, but they feel like genuine conversations in the intimate Eulalie Scandiuzzi Space. As Angel’s case develops, director Desdemona Chiang gracefully avoids the formula of TV crime procedurals. We feel the urgency of a friend’s judicial ordeal.

“Legal justice,” says the lawyer, “is an oxymoron.” Well, maybe it’s more of a subjective notion for Guirgis (whose The Motherfucker With the Hat was a hit last year in New York).

His play asks us to consider how the right thing may not be the legal thing. And how the legal thing may be right but abhorrent. Also located at the core of this fascinating play is the concept of jury nullification, which can provide a kind of salvation-on-Earth for the accused and give each juror the power and responsibility of a god. After 30 years of tinkering, Lewis Black’s would-be wedding farce is surprisingly bland and conventional, nothing like his rants on

The Daily Show. One Slight Hitch is droll when it ought to be funny and hollow when it should be heartwarming. It’s by no means terrible; it’s just dinner theater.

Black’s semi-autobiographical plot unfolds around the planned wedding of Courtney (Kimberley Sustad) to Harper (John Ulman), a cardboard cutout whose sole attribute is self-awareness of his own vapidity. Courtney’s parents are in a tizzy before their little girl’s big day. Baby sister P.B. (Katherine Grant-Suttie) trots out her Walkman every few minutes to remind us that we’re in the early ’80s, while older sibling Melanie (Kirsten Potter) is the black sheep, swilling liquor and oversharing tales of sexual conquest.

Into this buzzing hive of activity stumbles Ryan (Shawn Telford), the bride’s jilted ex.

A writer, he’s the sort of nebbishy dreamer you’d prefer to encounter at a coffee shop, working on his never-to-be-finished novel, rather than at the altar opposite your daughter. Hilarity and hijinks ensue.

If his characters seem to have been ordered from Amazon.com, Black’s plot will remind you of a half-dozen sitcom and movie weddings of the past three decades. That said, there are pleasures in the generic, and some will be tickled as the show rushes toward the anticipated exchange of vows. As written, One Slight Hitch seems to be about the bride and her suitors. As performed (under the direction of Joe Grifasi), it demonstrates time and again what a rock R. Hamilton Wright is.

As Doc Coleman, the father of the bride, he gives the comedy what buoyancy it has. Each supporting cast member is at his or her best when working off him.

From a lesser comic talent than Black, One Slight Hitch would be, at worst, simply an inoffensive little gambol. But his fame—and our high expectations—works against him. With its mayo-on-white-bread timidity, this twaddle is well beneath him.

Since Black really was dumped by an actress who said she’d never marry (and then married another fellow), you’d think his scab-picking would lead to some seriously funny stuff. Instead, One Slight Hitch puts a vintage Band-Aid on a superficial wound.

The choruses represent, at various times, “peasants, gnomes and sylphs, soldiers and students, demons and the damned, and celestial spirits,” which gives you some idea of the work’s fantastical scope. Berlioz even invented his own “demonic” language for the chorus to sing; see the title above for an example. The Met staged Damnation cinematically a couple of seasons ago, surrounding the singers with projected animations; Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam made his opera-directing debut last year in a British production that evoked Kristallnacht and Leni Riefenstahl; and when the Seattle Symphony last played it, in 1995, Gerard Schwarz filled the aisles with a candle-bearing children’s choir as a grand finale. Hopefully SSO has something memorable cooked up for this weekend’s concerts, which close Ludovic Morlot’s first season as music director. Berlioz let his imagination run rampant in the score, and though the music on its own never fails to dazzle, there’s no better opportunity to do something onstage other than present the same old platoon of tuxedos. Get Your Tentacles Off My Bike!

The old parking meters are mostly gone, street-corner signs aren’t so convenient, and you need a place to lock your bicycle. At Seattle Center especially, bike racks—if you can find them—tend to be full during events. Susan Robb has a solution, commissioned by SDOT and installed temporarily as part of the Center’s 50th-anniversary celebration. Just north of the EMP, her galvanized metal Parking Squid is there to receive your wheels. It is, disappointingly, smaller than expected (that’s my bike for scale in the photo). Giant squids make me think of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with James Mason battling the evil beast with its murderous eye and snapping beak. Small squids are cute; they’re sushi. Giant squids ought to be frightening monsters. As a few small children pass by, none seems remotely concerned by Robb’s metal Architeuthis, which is topped by a humiliatingly whimsical bike wheel, almost like

a halo. Giant squids don’t have halos! They eat children for breakfast! And where’s the beak?

Also, they have more and longer tentacles— which this squid will need come Bumbershoot.

And the city needs more bike racks, closer to building entrances, to incentivize cycling. SDOT ought to commission an entire menagerie from Robb, whose cephalopod will later move to a location to be determined. I know just the place: Pier 59, right in front of the Seattle Aquarium.

Achieving something far weirder and more resonant than the genre pastiche it initially seems to reach for, Rainbow satisfies on practically every level—provided you allow its narcotic pace, lysergic visuals, and throbbing soundtrack to tickle your cortex into a contained frenzy instead of lulling you to sleep. Auteurized to within an inch of its life by first-timer Panos Cosmatos, Rainbow constructs a deliberately opaque narrative with a slyly obscured timeline: An opening title card swears it’s 1983, but the helmet hair, turtleneck, and sport-jacket combos, among other tip-offs, read a decade earlier.

(A duo-chromatic flashback to 1966 adds yet another temporal wrinkle.) The skeletal story concerns Elena (Eva Allan), a young woman with telekinetic powers who’s doped and held against her will in an antiseptic bunkerutopia called Arboria, named for its squirrelly founder, a kind of Timothy Leary/Howard Hughes mashup. Smug, elusive staffer Dr. Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers) conducts painful experiments on the girl in the guise of therapy before they embark on convergent paths to liberation. These details don’t matter much, because Rainbow is a seamless, slavish synthesis of influences above all else. At heart the film is no more (or less) than a brilliantly executed lark, but it’s not often that we’re reminded with such potency that movies are most delightful as sensory experiences.

effective—a washout in one career, uncertain about the next, with an impatient girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose) waiting at home. In a way, Seattle is the worst market for this comedy by Stephen Gyllenhaal (Jake and Maggie’s dad, a TV veteran), since we all know the political outcome. But Gyllenhaal makes the monorail’s lost cause such plucky fun that you’re glad to buy the ticket. Then, when the movie’s over, we’ll get back in our cars and be stuck in traffic again. Down in Mexico City, where he’s now running a bookstore, Cogswell should be having a good laugh at that. BRIAN MILLER

Journalist Phil Campbell wrote a book (Zioncheck for President) about his getting booted from The Stranger and subsequently running the insurgent city-council campaign

of monorail fanatic Grant Cogswell way back in 2001. His opponent was incumbent Richard McIver (played by Cedric the Entertainer with affronted dignity), though other elements of the story have been embellished for the screen. In the Don Quixote role of Cogswell, Joel David Moore keeps a well-balanced lid on his character’s mania and altruism. The monorail was a stupid idea (in 1962, 2001, and today), but Cogswell’s despair about this city’s poisonous traffic is heartfelt; he’s ridiculous and admirable at the same time. As the Sancho Panza straight man, Jason Biggs is surprisingly

Japan’s Hirokazu Koreeda has always been an astute observer of all human behavior, but his greatest gift as a filmmaker seems to be his capacity to work with children. Koreeda doesn’t direct them so much as let them react to the universe he has created. The siblings at the center of I Wish, played by real-life brothers Koki and Ohshiro Maeda, often seem oblivious to the cameras around them. Whether painting fantastical landscapes or planning a secret trip, the kids exude an unforced naturalism that’s a rare, marvelous thing. It’s this child’s-eye view of the world that makes the premise of I Wish, which should be intolerably schmaltzy, actually work. Twelve-year-old Koichi (Koki) is living in the south of Kyushu island with his mother.

His younger brother Ryunosuke (Ohshiro) is with his father in the north. All Koichi wants is for his family to be reunited. So he hatches a plan: to make a wish on the initial run of the soon-to-be-completed bullet train, which will speed from one end of the island to the other.

He has been told that when the northbound and southbound trains pass each other for the first time, the intense energy will be enough to make miracles happen. Although I Wish feels loose, its structure reveals itself after the fact; Koreeda allows his performers to guide the journey, both literally to a town at the midpoint of the region and emotionally to a coming-ofage moment. Documentary filmmakers have long been drawn to the notorious Louisiana State Penitentiary, a huge complex known as Angola, with its own farm, rodeo, and radio station.

Founded in 1869, the place functioned as a slave plantation into the 1930s. You can hear its Delta influence in the music of Lead Belly (a onetime inmate, recorded by John Lomax), and Bruce McDonald’s documentary tries to exhume those blues traditions by following a visiting musician, Rita Chiarelli, as she organizes a concert featuring various inmate bands. The film is shot in black-and-white, like old Walker Evans photographs, and it strikes a similarly sympathetic—not to say ennobling—attitude toward the prisoners. No guards or crime victims are interviewed. Nor do we meet any

younger convicts who might prefer Lil Wayne to Howlin’ Wolf; Chiarelli is a blues traditionalist, and she jams with older, more repentant men with graying hair and lined faces. The terms are long and sentences stiff in Louisiana, as one inmate explains: “When they say life, they mean life!” Snippets of Chiarelli’s own life as the daughter of Sicilian immigrants to Canada suggest a different kind of documentary, but this is hardly Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. Music From the Big House offers great access but little insight into the men of Angola; Chiarelli’s observations (“When you’re singing, you’re not angry”) don’t help matters. The film leaves the inmates’ crimes and sentences to the final credits. Most are there for murder, assault, and rape—not so different, perhaps, than during Lead Belly’s time. What’s missing from first-time director Lorene Scafaria’s Steve Carell–vehicle misfire is the one element any apocalypse narrative suffocates without—urgency. Scafaria, screenwriter of the chipper, inexplicably lauded Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, has created an endtimes comedy that’s by turns bizarrely affectless and prattlingly manic—much like its dual protagonists, insurance salesman Dodge Petersen (Carell at his most downcast) and his perky neighbor Penny (a seriously unwound Keira Knightley), who light out together—along with a charming terrier—days before an asteroid is set to destroy the planet. Their goals: to track down his first love and a flight to the UK so Penny can spend doomsday with the folks. The reckonings and realizations fly once Seeking a Friend hits the road; for all the absurdity of these characters achieving perfectly articulated peace with their past demons as the world ends (I’m guessing pants-shitting panic would be more the norm), it’s a relief after the excruciatingly unfunny first act in which Scafaria (who also wrote the film) floats the notion that sticking to routine in the presence of overwhelming chaos is a way of giving life meaning. That’s fair, but she conveys this with so little irony or insight that Dodge’s workmates, domestic servant, and a T.G.I. Friday’s-esque waitstaff come off more as morons than heroes. Will (Ben Foster)—a lone-wolf American cartographer on contract to collect data on the ground to match to satellite maps in Armenia’s rural, disputed Eastern territory—is bailed out of a lost-in-translation situation by beautiful, feisty, Armenian-born/Paris-schooled photographer Gadarine (Lubna Azabal). Soon the attractive pair hits the road, both armed with tools—her camera, his satellite-enabled measurement whatsits—to map the land according to their respective instincts. At more than two hours, Braden King’s languid, vignette-driven road movie moves slowly and deliberately—all the better to invoke the disorientation of characters who are venturing off the grid both geographically and emotionally, their perspectives skewed by booze and new lust. The drama is occasionally interrupted by saturated montages, set to narration that aims to poetically evoke the film’s key themes—namely, the blinkered romance of travel, the impulse to capture the ineffable in tangible forms, the conflict between “ground truth” and authentic experience. The dreamy, feverish beauty of these sequences just barely balances the pretension of the exposition.

The film falters the further it drifts from that overheated, slightly delusional mood; the more precisely it’s scripted, the less it feels true. (In a relationship-spat scene, the lovers basically shout “We’re from different worlds!” at each other.) But the actors have incredible physical chemistry, and Here can be captivating when King sticks to exploring the conquering instinct—over land, in love—by setting their budding relationship against the unknowable landscape and allowing the imagery to speak for itself. In 1991, Montana wolf biologist Pat Tucker and her husband Bruce Weide began raising a wolf pup at the request of a filmmaker, who wanted to use the wild animal in a movie. Once the scene was shot, Tucker and Weide had a choice: put little Koani to sleep, or spend the next 15 years—her projected lifespan—leading a wolf-centered life. They chose the latter, and Rob Whitehair’s doc tells the story of those 15 years, much of it captured via the couple’s home videos. We see Koani pulling Tucker across a snowy field on cross-country skis; Tucker and Weide digging through their butcher’s dumpster for surplus meat; Koani’s “wolf babysitter” Indy, a fluffy collie mix who looks diminutive next to his huge and rangy wolf friend; and, in one unnerving scene, Koani baring her teeth when Tucker tries to get her off the couch. But Tucker and Weide didn’t keep Koani to be a pet—at the time, Yellowstone National Park was preparing to reintroduce wolf packs, and opposition ran high—particularly among ranchers with livestock at risk. Coalition equate wolves with Satan and protest with signs reading “Wolf Is the Saddam Hussein of the Animal World.” Tucker and Weide then use Koani as an “ambassador animal,” bringing her to schools (!) and using her to teach communities about the much-maligned creatures.

NIGHTWATCHING/REMBRANDT’S J’ACCUSE Peter Greenaway’s rarely screened Rembrandt’s J’Accuse (2008) and Nightwatching (2007) are essential and vital works of contemporary cinema that must be seen. In the latter, Greenaway takes Rembrandt’s The Night Watch as the starting point for a mystery. Rembrandt (Martin Freeman) is commissioned to paint the Amsterdam Musketeers Militia. Then the head of the militia is killed in a dubious shooting accident, and Rembrandt begins to realize that many of the painting’s subjects may have had a nefarious hand in the murder. Rembrandt’s

J’Accuse is a documentary on the painting, which examines 33 of the work’s mysteries. Greenaway’s voice-over dominates the film as the camera pores over every inch of the canvas, honoring the immense intricacy of this painted image. • THE WIZARD OF OZ Family flick, gay cult movie,

midnight stoner jamboree—it doesn’t really matter how you categorize The Wizard of Oz (1939). It couldn’t be sweeter or more family friendly—however your family is defined. Expect gays, straights, and kids of all derivations to sing along, misty-eyed, to the timeless songs by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg. The Wizard of Oz has its roots in the book series begun by L. Frank Baum in 1900, but it’s really a Depression-era picture reflecting both the sadness and hope of that era. For all today’s CGI wonders, there’s nothing quite like the moment when Judy Garland wakes up in a Technicolor Oz. No DVD or giant plasma-screen TV can really do the scene justice.

Bernhardt “Bernie” Tiede, a closeted ex-mortician, confessed to the shooting of his benefactress, 81-yearold millionaire widow Marjorie Nugent. In Richard Linklater’s movie, Shirley MacLaine is Nugent, by almost all accounts a sour and unpleasant woman, clutching her purse like a floatation device. Matthew McConaughey is district attorney Danny Buck Davidson, and Jack Black plays Tiede, tackling his duties as church-choir soloist and community-theater impresario, in a performance remarkable for its ability to be at once flamboyant and remote. Bernie is all about irreconcilable facts and foggy motives, not least the contrary demands of forgiveness written in the Bible and the stern punishment written in the law books. It is the rarest of rarities: a truly unexpected film. (PG-13) Nick Pinkerton Varsity THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL Reliable middlebrow craftsman John Madden makes neat work of Deborah Moggach’s novel about a group of disparate British retirees lured—for cut-rate surgery, low-overhead living, or reasons they hope to keep private—to India. The cast is led by Dame Judi Dench as a longsheltered widow looking to stand on her own two feet.

Marigold Hotel has that oh-so-tactful British touch, the seeming result of an industry-wide gentleman’s agreement never to go too far. The material is ribald but, of course, never crude and sewn with “Life begins at 60” affirmations. Although the film is overextended by a few plotlines too many, you’ll look forward to Tom Wilkinson’s turn as a retired high court judge who still goes fluttery over the memory of an affair from schoolboy days and Bill Nighy as a shy, ineffably decent man, quietly surprised by how nimble he becomes in this new atmosphere. (PG-13) Nick Pinkerton Kirkland Parkplace, Lynwood Theater, Pacific Place, Seven Gables HYSTERIA Set in 1880s London, Hysteria proceeds as a tedious, clumsy diddle, constantly reminding viewers how much progress has been made since the Victorian era. “You may be unaware, but there is a social revolution underfoot!” suffragette and East End settlementhouse volunteer Charlotte (Maggie Gyllenhaal) clamors in a typical harangue to her father (Jonathan Pryce), a specialist in women’s medicine. To cure respectable ladies of the ailment of the title, he deploys “vulvar massage” until the patient reaches “satisfactory paroxysm.”

To assist in his extremely popular practice, Dr. Dalrymple hires Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy), an idealistic doctor (and real person, on whom this film is loosely based), who falls for Gyllenhaal’s firebrand. Eventually Granville and a friend Edmund (Rupert Everett), invent the vibrator. everything made by Wes Anderson, does so knowingly.

The escape Sam engineers for the pair is dangerous and crazy, but it’s also a way for him to exercise control, and to show off to a receptive audience. Suzy doesn’t have it so bad at home, but Sam’s flattering gaze gives her something she isn’t getting, and now won’t easily be able to live without. This utopian romance is thrown into relief by the quiet despair of the adults in Moonrise.

Lonely, even—or particularly—when not alone, the grown-ups have long ago given up on the possibility of transformative love. (PG-13) Karina Longworth Big Picture Redmond, Guild 45th, Lincoln Square, Pacific Place, Thornton Place PROMETHEUS Prone to shallow ponderousness, Prometheus assumes the air of a blockbuster-withbrains that links the genesis and the ultimate fate of mankind with a galactic quest for the mysterious beings archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) calls the “Engineers.” But it works best when it steps back from contemplating the cosmos to enter the domain of flesh-and-blood and hereditary terror. The script, by Jon Spaihts and Lost’s Damon Lindelof, originated as a prequel to Alien, director Ridley Scott’s first big hit. Rather than setting out, as Alien scriptwriter Dan O’Bannon first did, to build the ultimate creature feature, these gimcrack philosophers have loosely sown Prometheus with Big Themes in hopes that one might perchance take root. Reporter Jeff (Jake Johnson), on assignment to write an exposé on a guy searching for a timetravel partner, suggests that his intern Darius (Plaza) use the fact that she’s a “beautiful woman” to get the story.

A typical Plaza tough cookie (though patly softened), Darius calls Jeff out for “dangling my vagina out there like bait.” And then she does what she’s told to gain entry into the weird world of Kenneth (Mark Duplass), a hermit loner who claims to have built a time machine. Plaza and Duplass have an easy, charming chemistry, and plot contrivances aside, as indie-film nerd-mances go, this one is genuinely sweet. (R) Karina Longworth Lincoln Square, Meridian, Oak Tree, Sundance Cinemas YOUR SISTER’S SISTER Seattle filmmaker Lynn Shelton’s fourth feature is another agreeable exercise in small-scale humanism, an intimate three-hander set mostly in a vacation home in the San Juans. Mark Duplass plays the an aging, grieving slacker Jack, who has an ill-advised, drunken fling with Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), the visiting sister of his good friend Iris (Emily Blunt), who arrives to find unexpected tensions in the cabin. In outline, Your Sister’s Sister could be a bedhopping farce, but Shelton is less concerned with the sex than the emotional fallout. Hannah was recently dumped by her girlfriend. Jack’s dead brother once dated Iris, the high achiever in the bunch. Shelton’s characters tend to be yearning and groping toward change in their lives, and she lets her cast improvise on the three characters’ longing and confusion—resulting in meandering scenes without clever punch lines or clear end points. Feelings take priority over words; Your Sister’s Sister is talky and naturalistic, with many moments of humor and truth—the latter often eloquently expressed with silence. exposed concrete remains between the floor and the wallpaper’s bottom edge, but the overall effect tilts toward tearoom. “I feel like I’m in a dollhouse,” one of my dining companions said.

The high-ceilinged room narrows into a back bar with bright-red walls and a counter overlooking the kitchen. The restaurant’s best table is on the business end of the bar: A four-top is purposely positioned where bartenders and cooks can’t help but brush against it. The chef’s table, at which a special five-course menu is served, sells for $55 a person, and every patron seated there appeared to be having a blast.

Bea is at its best when Black gives in to his cheffy urges. Before taking a three-year kitchen hiatus, Black acquired 25 years of experience, including successful stints as executive chef of restaurants such as Fuller’s, 35th Street Bistro, and The Barking Frog. In a December interview on Seattle Weekly’s Voracious blog, Black blamed the rigors of hotel restaurants for temporarily dimming

his love of professional cooking: “It never shuts down,” he said of the standard threemeal-a-day, 365-day-ayear schedule. But he was drawn back to the industry by the chance to open a sophisticated neighborhood hangout. He and Perry—a friend with business smarts and plenty of culinary enthusiasm— envisioned Bea as a sit-down sanctum untouched by trends, where Madrona residents could count on getting a decent meatloaf made with house-ground beef.

“Our idea and concept hasn’t changed since day one: cool comfort food and a nice inviting environment with a polished service style,” Black told Voracious. “We’ll be doing some of the classics, and there’s going to have to be a part of the menu where I can play around with food I really like to eat, such as sweetbreads, lamb kidneys, and all those kind of things.”

Keep an eye on Bea’s Facebook page for any mention of the phrase “lamb kidneys.”

They weren’t on the menu when I visited, but if they’re half as good as the sweetbreads, you might as well order a double portion. The plump sweetbreads are crisped just enough to contextualize their starkly fabulous creaminess, which lolls deliciously on the tongue. A spray of apple gastrique gives the appetizer a honeyed flavor, but the sweetness is balanced by salty capers and the plate’s central clump of bitter, woodsy frisée.

A homey take on rabbit is another foodgeek favorite. The meat’s plated with tender knobs of spaetzle, fava beans cooked to the cusp of popping, and sturdy, teardropshaped Thumbelina carrots. Home gardenvariety carrots might have serviced for the dish, steeped in a dusky sauce, but Bea’s menu is admirably rife with slightly offbeat ingredients, as well as better-known ones which don’t always surface in $20-a-plate restaurants: The cheddar for a mac-andcheese starter comes straight from a Cougar Gold can.

here isn’t a stated dress code at Restaurant Bea, Tom Black and Kate Perry’s recent contribution to Madrona. But if you happen to own a pair of jeans so fancy they merit a spot in your closet instead of a drawer, then bingo: You’ve found the bottom half of your Bea-appropriate outfit.

Seated near Bea’s host stand, I was treated to a parade of denim that would have made Andy Rooney apoplectic. If the price tags at Nordstrom’s can be trusted, most of Bea’s guests spent more on their pants than their wine-enhanced dinners for two. It’s a sartorial choice that’s perfectly in keeping with the vibe of the restaurant, which was designed to be simultaneously comfy and stylish. Bea is rarely both of those, but it’s usually one or the other, depending on the evening and what you’ve ordered. As a result, the restaurant feels about as essential as Citizens of Humanity jeans: You can certainly get by without it, but you’ll likely have an enjoyable evening should you end up there.

Before Bea was Bea, it was June, a sister restaurant to Queen Anne’s Portage that lasted just over a year. Black and Perry have hung onto the sloped cloud-gray banquettes that line the dining room, but the tables and chairs are now front-porch white. Putting the stress on dainty, the owners have also added wallpaper in a pink floral pattern typically seen only on perfume bottles and barrel racers’ blouses. A yard or two of

La Fontana Siciliana’s food is lovely, the atmosphere charming but not cloying, and the service amazing. The pear, prosciutto, and Parmesan appetizer is beyond divine; the fruity sweetness and tang of the very Sicilian pasta con le sarde (spaghetti, sardines, fennel) is so unusual that it practically qualifies as entertainment. An underappreciated gem. $$

vanilla-cucumber vodka, gin, a little bit of sour, muddled cucumber, a touch of cucumber syrup, a press (a mix of 7-Up and soda) on top, and a splash of Midori for color. “I chose this one because I’ve been using a lot of cucumber lately, and I just had some readily available,” says Justice. “I think using cucumber makes for a refreshing drink.”

The Verdict: It tastes sweet at the beginning, but as soon as you swallow your first sip, a more intense, earthy taste appears seemingly out of nowhere. I loved the sweetness and freshness, while my friend preferred the woodsy aftertaste.

The drink was certainly interesting, and prompted a lot of interaction with our bartender, who loved chatting about the different summer cocktails he’s designing and the drink he prefers after his shift is over: “These days, I pretty much drink vodka,” Justice says. “Ciroc on the rocks.” E food@seattleweekly.com

The Watering Hole: EVO Tapas Kitchen & Cabaret, 1715 E. Olive Way, 328-5293, CAPITOL HILL The Atmosphere: Open a little more than a month, EVO is the new slick place to hang out on Capitol Hill. The restaurant features small plates and cocktails with a Mediterranean slant. The consulting chef, KP Panyathong, has a resume that includes The Herbfarm, Spring Hill, and The Met, but the bar is the real draw here.

Near the intersection of Olive and Belmont, EVO sits next door to The Social, a just-as-new nightclub from Pterodactyl Group, so you can understand the importance of a good stiff drink to keep you from being sober while you get your groove on. At EVO, the ceilings are high, the brick walls exposed (as are the various liquor bottles), the music upbeat, and the staff young and eager.

But what captures your attention most is the time-lapse photography of various Seattle neighborhoods, from sunrise to sunset, projected on the walls and above the bar on what appears to be a shower curtain.

Justice has lived in Seattle all his 33 years.

After a combined four years at El Gaucho and Salish Lodge followed by a three-year stint at the Northgate Stanford’s, Justice made the move to EVO. “I wanted to get back into the more unique and fine-dining experience, somewhere less corporate,” he explains. “So I came down here.”

He also has a hidden talent that fits right into EVO’s live-entertainment scene. “I DJ, and that’s one of the main draws here. They’re trying to get me to do some DJing here. I used to DJ when I was in my early 20s, took a break, and just started getting back into it again.”

As women named Katrina and men named Osama know, news headlines can make innocuous names seem less so.

“I think we should name hurricanes after vegetables we hate,” a disgruntled Katrina Heron told The New York Times soon after the storm which shares her name devastated New Orleans.

Letters and numbers seem equally unlikely to offend, but Michael Mina’s downtown restaurant is now in the awkward position of having a name very close to that of the state ballot measure to repeal gay marriage.

Opponents of gay marriage last week submitted the signatures needed to put Referendum 74 on the November ballot. Their allies can follow the referendum’s progress through Twitter hashtag #R74, which has become shorthand for the referendum.

Margaret Nicoll of Gruman & Nicoll Public Relations, which handles publicity for RN74— named for a road that winds through France— says the restaurant isn’t worried that guests will be

put off by the coincidence. “There has been no confusion expressed by guests or in online conversations regarding the restaurant,” Nicoll says. “RN74’s guests are an intelligent and discerning group, and as long as the print media continues to refer to the referendum as Ref. 74, there doesn’t appear to be any confusion.”

As it happens, Seattle Weekly’s news department tends to spell out “Referendum 74,” but writers at The Stranger and The Seattle Times have used the abbreviation R-74.

According to Google, “Ref. 74” is rarely used by anyone.

To be clear, there is absolutely no relationship between RN74 and the referendum. But there is precedent for restaurants adjusting their names for political reasons: In 1917, New York City’s famed Lüchow’s dropped its umlaut in response to rampant anti-German sentiment.

The strategy worked: As The New York Times reported, “The absence of the umlaut led many new customers to believe that the place was a Chinese restaurant.” E

Flogging Molly EDM madness hits billionaires, teenagers, and the Northwest.

I tell this story because it neatly encapsulates a few truths about electronic music in 2012: 1) It’s big—probably bigger than it’s been since the “electronica” boom of the ’90s. It even has a dorky new name that no one who listens to the stuff would ever say in real life: “EDM,” for “electronic dance music.” 2) It’s mainstream,

became Live Nation, had announced plans to acquire electronic-music venues and events to the tune of $1 billion.

Of course, Seattle has long had its own small but thriving electronic-music scene, with companies like Decibel and USC throwing everything from small club nights to the acclaimed multivenue, weekend-long Decibel Festival and USC’s annual Halloween big-room rave Freak Night. So what does this new wave of popularity and flood of new fans mean for electronic music in Seattle?

Will the high tide raise all boats, or will the deluge drown out or dilute our city’s carefully cultivated electronic scenes?

“We’re extremely excited to see the recent surge in popularity,” says USC’s Doug McIntyre. “Over the last 15 years, we have certainly experienced peaks and valleys in the level of support for electronic dance music in the Pacific Northwest, but the size of our crowds has been on the rise for the past two-plus years now.

breaking onto the pop charts via tunes with Euro-trance as their pulse, from LMFAO to Lady Gaga to Katy Perry. 3) Its rising stars are playing larger, more frequently all-ages (or 18-and-over) venues, reaching a new wave of young fans for whom body-vibrating bass, elevating drugs, and glow sticks aren’t retro signifiers of ’90s nostalgia but an entirely new experience. 4) It’s arrived in Seattle.

This summer, two of the shining young stars of “EDM” come to Seattle headlining two festivals, one new, one old. On Saturday, Swedish progressive house DJ Avicii (22 years old) headlines the debut of USC’s Paradiso Festival at the Gorge, along with such names as Afrojack, Digitalism, and more. In September, dubstep phenom Skrillex (24) will close out Bumbershoot, which is also doubling down on their Decibel-produced “Bumbershoot After Dark” electronic after-events by including admission with all regular festival tickets.

These are the local effects of a trend that has been accelerating nationally. In the past year, Skrillex has been on the cover of SPIN, and he and similarly massive-and-rising acts like Avicii and Deadmau5 have garnered substantial, trend-identifying coverage from such august publications as The New Yorker and The New York Times. Earlier this month, a sold-out crowd of 30,000 attended Las Vegas mega-rave the Electric Daisy Festival.

n the night before St. Patrick’s Day, I hopped on a downtownbound bus in the U District that was packed standing-room-only with college kids decked out in green and gold American Apparel like trashy leprechauns, chatting loudly about the night to come. One girl who’d stopped to talk at the bus stop had the unmistakable saucer-eyed stare of someone high on E—or, as the kids (and Madonna, bless her) are calling it, “Molly.” The final destination for, it seemed, everyone on board except me was the 7,000-capacity WaMu Theater, where Calvin Harris—a Scottish electro-house producer and scorer of #1 hit “We Found Love” with R&B star Rihanna— was headlining a holiday-themed party.

“You’ve got pop stars working with some of dance music’s elite producers to create hits that are climbing up the charts and being supported by top-notch music videos. In the past, those producers would’ve worked behind the curtain; nowadays, they’re often promoted as contributing artists, and consequently some have achieved household-name status.”

Other players in Seattle’s electronic scene are equally optimistic. “I think the surge [in mainstream popularity] is a great thing for youth in Seattle who don’t have the ability to see 21-and-over shows,” says bass-music producer and Car Crash Set label head Ill Cosby.

Rafael Anton Irisarri, who records for the Ghostly International label as The Sight Below and who will host the second annual edition of Seattle’s experimental/ambient festival Substrata, August 3–5, agrees. “One of the things that blew my mind last year at Substrata were some of the younger generation that came to both evenings,” he says. “We’re talking 16-year-olds and such.

I was very happy to see them exposed to things like Biosphere and Oren Ambarchi.”

And even if our local electronic movers have reservations, they remain largely positive. “What has been difficult,” acknowledges Decibel Festival’s Sean Horton, whose bookings this year include pop artist Kimbra and whose past bookings have brought globetrotting producer Diplo and a pre-fame Deadmau5 to town, “is the plethora of festivals and insanely high fees [now] associated with electronic-music artists, many of whom we helped break in Seattle going back to 2005. It’s an age-old problem, and for me it just means that I have to continue mining for fresh talent.”

“It’s surely not the best music,” says Cosby of Skrillex and Avicii.

“But it’s something for young people at a crucial age in their development. I don’t feel like the music itself has damaged or bolstered the Seattle electronic-music scene—I think larger electronic-music draws run in a different parallel world to Seattle’s electronic-music scene with little to no crossover.

“Some of the kids who see large festival performances are the ones who’ll be future DJs, producers, and concertgoers,” he continues. “I’m absolutely a product of the last big breakthrough of electronic music into the mainstream during the late ’90s—I saw The Crystal Method at a suburban hotel banquet room. I couldn’t have had more of a mainstream introduction to electronic music than that.” E

How a local experimental rock band plans to conquer the world, one six-minute single at a time.

T

hough Tully’s had called the old Rainier Brewery home for years, whatever lingering scent of beer or coffee the colorful building along I-5 ever possessed is now buried beneath the ripening funk of band practice spaces and the thick smell of pot. The halls connecting the musical workshops are decorated with discarded records and dorky headshots of Ann Wilson and The English Beat, giving the space

character of Yuni appeared in a childhood short story as an “eccentric, free-thinking Thai hippie.” They’re all questionable. The truth is a little more quotidian.

The core songwriting duo, Beszhak and Ross Beamish, met when they played a few solo shows together five years ago. Bound by a mutual affection for odd, adventurous pop, they decided to collaborate, enlisting Beamish’s brother Bryce as the drummer and filling out the lineup with schoolmates and co-workers Jim Saunders on bass and Isaiah Washington on percussion and electronics (including a sweet Roland sampler that functions as a theremin). Beszhak, whose shaggy hair and beard and Kirkland background earned him the nickname the “blond Robin Pecknold,” and Ross, who wears his hair slicked back (a la Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Pitt) and sports faded tattoos done by Washington, share songwriting duties equally, if somewhat competitively.

“We’ve heard everything the other has done for five years,” Beszhak says. “We share recording equipment—when I turn on the tape player, I hear what he’s done. It is competitive.

But there’s no winner.”

As part of the band’s evolution, their songs have gotten longer. Prizes’ opening track, “Echoes,” clocks in at more than six minutes, and Saunders jokingly describes their increasing song lengths as “tantric.” It’s not a bad metaphor: The songs’ key changes and multipart structures build to climaxes more satisfying than that of your average three-minute radio single.

Bryce is about to bring the group’s aesthetic to its next level: He’s started a label, Havaii Records, to release Yuni’s albums and other projects he believes worthy of support.

“Bryce has already rejected five of my [solo] albums,” cracks Beszhak, who’s recently been on a writing jag inspired by pianist La Monte Young’s minimalist masterpiece The Well-Tuned Piano. He’s led Ross down the same path, and now both are writing long, experimental compositions.

“Sean is like the coach of our band,” Ross says.

“I do move quick,” Beszhak admits with a sheepish grin. “But I don’t know if I move in the right direction.”

As long as he sticks to the current artistic recipe, he’s sure to find a way to make microtones addictively listenable. E

a dilapidated rec-center vibe. Out back, the members of experimental garage-rock quintet Yuni in Taxco are sitting on concrete steps under the highway, drinking tallboys of High Life and catching the last late-evening rays.

They’ve been rehearsing for Saturday’s album-release show for Prizes, the band’s third record of deconstructed, globally influenced psych-pop. The test pressing of the LP arrived earlier today from the Netherlands. The cover, created by local artist Lindsey Rae Gjording, is layers of blue, yellow, and purple light projected through the lacy transparency of a cutout made of Tyvek. The psychedelic undersea world evoked pairs perfectly with the spacey textures of the band’s songs. It’s this unified aesthetic, from their incense-and-tapestrydecorated practice space to their decision to release the album on cassette and vinyl (not CD), that best shows Yuni’s winking talent for straddling the line between retro and edgy.

Like the band’s first two albums, Prizes was recorded in Yuni’s cramped practice space beneath the big T, with guitarist/vocalist/ co-songwriter Sean Beszhak applying his signature minimalistic production work.

“Some of the songs are the original demos or live recordings,” he explains. “There’s no preparation.” Rather than tweak the first take and risk losing the raw energy, he adds details as the songs progress. “That’s how we end up with a lot of layers,” he says. “You have to let things manifest.”

There are several Internet rumors about how Yuni came to be. One says they formed on a Mexican vacation. Another claims the

Cream’s Jack Bruce and his famous friends explore the music of a forgotten great.

hanks to popular compilations like Cream of Clapton and Complete Clapton, history has relegated classic hits like “I Feel Free,” “White Room,” and “Sunshine of Your Love” to the songs-written-by-Eric-Clapton department.

In truth, these melodies were penned by the vocalist and bassist of those Cream hits: Jack Bruce. 40 years later, Bruce isn’t bemoaning the fact that most people attribute them to his more-famous former bandmate.

“He might get the credit,” Bruce told me over the phone recently, “but I get the cash.”

While not too concerned with burnishing his own bona fides, Bruce does bristle at the notion that his late friend and collaborator, Tony Williams, hasn’t received the accolades he deserves. The drummer, who famously went to work for Miles Davis at age 16, pioneered the merger of jazz and rock. “The very first real jazz-rock band was The Tony Williams Lifetime,” says Bruce, who was once a member.

“A lot of people think it was Miles Davis. But Tony was doing it before Miles.”

of Williams’ forward-thinking band. They only planned to play a benefit concert or two, but have released a record and are about to make their second swing through Seattle. The lineup playing this week is that of Spectrum Road’s self-titled debut album, with Living Colour’s Vernon Reid on guitar and Medeski, Martin, and Wood’s John Medeski playing keyboards.

Holding down the hot seat is drummer Cindy Blackman Santana, whose resume includes years of service with Lenny Kravitz and her husband, Carlos Santana, as well as lessons from Williams when she was a teenager.

t is that time of the year when colleges, high schools, and every other educational institution are graduating students. Men and women and boys and girls are getting their move on to a higher level of education or “graduating” to life outside academics.

If you are around my age, you will appreciate it when I say: I wish I knew then what I know now. We thought we knew it all way back when. We only knew a little bit.

I’m not suggesting that teenagers and young adults are not yet smart. But most haven’t received the informational, hard-fought lessons that you learn the hard way out there in the wondrous war that we call life.

A trick I have learned along the way is to have a hero to aspire to. It can be as simple as wanting to be like Clint Eastwood’s character in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly or aspiring be like Oprah. There can be many more personal variables—like an uncle or aunt, a parent,

a yoga instructor, or Bruce fucking Lee. Having a hero can get you through some of those tough-as-hell moments. You can ask yourself: “What would Clint do right now?” when in need of some steely nerve.

Breathing is important too. So is laughing. Laugh your ass off.

That is important.

And do stuff. You probably want to ask yourself if you are doing today the things you’d want to do on the last day of your life. What a full life that could be if you did indeed live every day like it was your last.

THE SITUATION I’m spending a recent Thursday evening upstairs at the Six Arms on Capitol Hill having a beer with local musician Patrick John White.

The 24-year-old is wearing round-framed glasses, his class ring from Eastern Washington University, and a T-shirt featuring Animal Collective’s Avey Tare.

In April, White released Jargon, an album of freeform, experimental pop songs he began recording in November under the moniker Legato Bebop. He calls the name his “nerd moniker” from his early teens; it’s an amalgam of the two anime characters Legato Bluesummers and Cowboy Bebop. “In musical terms, it literally means ‘tied-together nonsense,’ ” he says. “So it’s very serendipitous.”

HOW HE GOT HERE White teaches ESL at a center in the Central District; most of his students are East African refugees. “The refugee population in this city is like the most beautiful people in

the world,” he says. “You have to communicate on such a more physical level.” Outside of work and the occasional concert, he likes to stay away from Seattle. He and his fiancee just relocated to an apartment in Issaquah. “Old Issaquah’s cool because it has a coastal-town kind of feel. They have a really good butcher.”

SHOP TALK Jargon is difficult music to classify.

The melodies wander, the samples are simultaneously atmospheric and tension-laden, and White’s vocals creep in and out. It reminds me quite a bit of Sigur Rós, although White says he doesn’t listen to that band much. “You have bands like Witch Gardens or Naomi Punk who write really good [what you could call] pop songs, because they have structure, tangibly, and then there’s Secret Colors, a lot of the more ambient wash . . . and I don’t feel like I fit with either of them,” White muses. “I’m trying to be very inclusive, and that’s why I put the pop elements in there, because I want everybody to be able to listen to it. I’m just trying to fuse things that will bring the people who like weird stuff together with the people who like Muse or something.”

BTW: White can’t be grouped with the current trend of bedroom-pop musicians who pull together songs on their Macbooks—he doesn’t use computers. “It felt too easy, almost,” he says of using a laptop.

“I wasn’t going to get a unique sound out of it.” Live, White plays alone with his guitar, a pedal board, and a sampler. “It’s kind of like a little dance, because I’ve got to get to different places at different times and make sure things are running,” he says. “It’s really fun.

SW: I sort of imagine Torches as the record that changed your life. Is that accurate?

Pontius: Yeah, that kind of puts some weight on it, I guess. For sure, we are all in a different place than we were before we released the record. It’s been a game of catch-up since we first released “Pumped Up Kicks.” We had to catch up with the momentum that that song gave us. Life has definitely changed in a very good way.

Do you have a favorite song on the album?

I think probably “Call It What You Want” is my favorite, both to play live and the recorded version. We recorded that in the UK with Paul Epworth, and that was kind of our first trip together as a band overseas. There’s some kind of magic in that. And we were really excited to be in Europe doing the record. It’s got that element to it.

Can you tell me about the cover illustration— who drew it, how it came to life?

It was a friend of [singer] Mark Foster’s, a guy named Japayork, who’s from New York and London, and Foster’s known him for five or six years, and I think always in the back of his mind had the idea of wanting him to illustrate a record at some point. We argued about that artwork forever. I think I was the only one who didn’t like it. I love his artwork, but I had a different image in my mind for the record cover. But I ended up being happy that I lost the fight, because it ended up that the characters on the front became this whole world that we ended up including in our live show and on our merch and our website.

What’s the coolest pop-culture moment you’ve experienced for one of your songs?

We were in the UK somewhere, and we were at a football game, a soccer game. We had gone as a band—which we try to do, [attend] some kind of cultural event—and a lot of us are football fans. During a timeout this video came up on the screen, and “Pumped Up Kicks” just blasted the whole arena, and none of us expected it to be there. That was a cool moment, to be immersed in someone else’s cultural event and have that pop up. E

Gay Pride celebrations are never short on trashy, flashy spectacle, so the Nark Magazine–produced Hey Tranny It’s Tranny (I don’t get it, either) should be a glittering, eye-and-ear-traumatizing exemplar of the form. Goth punk-ish drag queen and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sharon Needles might be the most recognizable draw, but musical headliners SSION are not to be missed. A kind of John Waters-esque electro-pop theater troupe headed by Missouri-bred art star Cody Critcheloe, SSION combines confidently pumping dance tracks with colorful onstage camp. The party is hosted by local personality Ben DeLaCreme, and also features JD Samson of Le Tigre and MEN fame. With Alaska

emotionally resonant lyrics define the band, and as often as not it’s his unadorned acousticguitar strumming or simple piano chords that drive the songs. The performance-art-meets-Klaus Nomi-on-acid thing of Wilson’s own band the Ononos would be enough of a bizarro wonderment on its own; the addition of hot indie kids Posse and DJ Amateur Youth only add to the guarantee that this year’s shindig will be so off-the-hook you most likely won’t remember it at all. “Pumped Up Kicks” was one of 2011’s biggest surprise smash hits; its ubiquity proved to be a star-making turn for Los Angeles songwriter Mark Foster and his band, who went on to record a gold-selling debut with top producers Paul Epworth and Greg Kurstin and perform alongside the Beach Boys at this year’s Grammy Awards. The furor over “Pumped Up Kicks” has finally died down, which I see as a good thing, because now some deserving attention can be paid to the band’s other singles, like “Helena Beat” and “Houdini”—fresh, great pop songs which have the benefit of being just as catchy and not as ambiguously violent as “Pumped Up Kicks.” Opening this tour is another pop performer poised to make it big: dynamic New Zealand vocalist Kimbra, with whom Foster collaborated earlier this year on the snazzy one-off “Warrior.” (Also see “Tell Me About That Song,” page 45.) edical-marijuana delivery services require a certain leap of faith on the part of patients. Unlike storefront access points, you can’t go in and do a little comparison shopping among the various strains before making your selections. But with Green Ambrosia—covering King County in its delivery area—I needn’t have worried.

The customer-service rep was knowledgeable and helpful, offering input and advice on my strain selections, and the delivery itself was punctual. The phone rep gave me a half-hour arrival window for my medicine, and delivery person Rebecca showed up at the front end of that window, only about an hour after I’d called.

(at $15 a gram, it had better be). Tahuya offers both pain relief and energy, a rare and valuable combination that makes it a good smoke for day or night. The strain was reportedly developed for such a long while on the Olympic Peninsula that its genetic origins are lost in the mists of time and THC. As for the $12 strains, the Sour Diesel (grown hydroponically, according to Green Ambrosia) provided the expected burst of creative energy, upbeat insight, and euphoria. This Sour D has a quick onset, but doesn’t stick around as long as the other three Green Ambrosia strains I tried, making it necessary to toke up more often.

The organic Original Pez is a Northwestbred strain originating in the early 1990s; it does have a subtle scent of its namesake candy, but smells way better. As an indicadominant hybrid, it produces the kind of body stone that helps relieve pain and, in the process, puts a grin on your face.

The Deadhead OG is some of the finest cannabis I’ve smoked in a while. It’s a sativadominant hybrid which hits with a pleasant mental rush with a prominent “wow” factor.

With continued toking, it morphs into a body stone, relieving pain, depression, and anxiety.

This sticky, crystalicious synapse-thumper has satisfying oomph.

Then there’s Firecrotch, certainly an intriguing moniker. This one will appeal to fans of heavy couchlock indicas. It’s something of a creeper, but 15 minutes after you finish a joint you’ll be filled with pleasant lassitude; you may find yourself melting into the couch, you’ll be so relaxed.
