Dead Again

Seattle Police had their hands full when they arrested Timothy Michael Jones, 34, for property destruction and harassment. On April Fool’s Day, the ex-con had been admitted to Swedish Hospital for swallowing razor blades.

Eight days later, police were called to take him away after he began damaging equipment in his hospital room and bit into his finger, threatening to spit blood on a nurse. Placed in restraints, he proceeded to bite the inside of his mouth and spew blood around the room.

Deng, however, is affiliated with the UW, which is why the district’s fleet manager told Kodama, when she asked, that he was not entitled to an SPS car, according to Chambers.

Regardless, Chambers says, Kodama got the district’s accounting division to approve an allocation of $5,000 to buy Deng a car.

“It was really innocently done,” Kodama says. The money for Deng’s car actually came from China to support the Confucius Institute, she says. It was, however, in SPS’s coffers, which to the Auditor’s Office makes it public money. “Once we realized that, we sold the car,” Kodama says.

As for Tang, she took over a car that been assigned to a Sealth teacher visiting from China who preferred a bus pass, according to Kodama. That rationale also didn’t pass muster with the Auditor’s Office.

Maybe that’s because the office was generally unimpressed with the district’s procedures for monitoring its cars and their use. Among the findings: The district does not perform inventory procedures required by state law, nor does it do anything to ensure that gas purchases—amounting to a whopping $800,000 last year—are reasonable. County Jail, where things didn’t get much better. Records show he’d spent the previous eight years, and much of his teen years, in adult and juvenile prisons, and didn’t care for being locked up. He has a history of assaulting other inmates and staff in prison and jails, and a record that includes burglary, rape of a child, escape, and arson. Records show he sometimes faked illnesses, mutilated himself, and had attempted suicide.

Not long after being booked, he tore off his plastic wristband and tried to swallow it, and fought with custody officers.

Jones was put under constant watch in the infirmary, as he was known to have epileptic seizures, then isolated in a suicide-watch unit. At one point, he asked to be placed on a restraint board, but that request was denied. On his fourth day in jail, he flooded his cell, and the water was turned off.

On April 15, Jones indicated to guards he was having a seizure. Two nurses and a sergeant responded.

According to jail records, “Medical Staff determined that Jones is Faking/Intentionally Presenting this behavior to try and get staff to enter his cell.” Staff was told during a “psych huddle” that Jones “will try to create situations that put staff at risk. Jones has stated recently that his goal is to be institutionalized for life.”

The next day, around 3:30 p.m., Jones was seen lying face down on his cell floor. An officer couldn’t tell if he was breathing. When a sergeant entered the cell three minutes later, he found Jones blue in the face and without a pulse. Rescue efforts began and a Medic One unit arrived eight minutes later, subsequently rushing Jones to Harborview Medical Center.

He died three days later.

His death was the jail’s second this year— after federal officials signed off on two years’ worth of reforms in February intended to, among other things, prevent inmate deaths.

While the King County Medical Examiner’s office says that Jones apparently suffered a seizure, investigators could not determine what exactly he died from.

There was one certainty: This time, lying on his cell floor, Jones wasn’t faking.

New records also show that Domenic A. Vittone, 49, booked into the downtown jail last September on a felony warrant, killed himself three days later in a dorm cell housing three other inmates, despite new measures to prevent such deaths.

He was found just after midnight on September 12 hanging by his neck with a noose he had fashioned from elastic surgical material, the other end tied around a television support pole.

As Seattle Weekly has been reporting since 2005, inmates have regularly taken advantage of exposed plumbing, fixtures, and wires to commit suicide. Fortunately, no jail suicides have been reported so far this year.

t’s not that James Pirtle wasn’t wary about taking the case of Thomas Kwoyelo. There were omens, starting with the lightning that struck his plane on takeoff from Amsterdam.

When a friend dropped him off at Sea-Tac International Airport, he had already been asking himself, “What am I doing? How many people has he killed? And now I’m putting my life on the line?”

And after Pirtle arrived in Africa, stepping into the summer heat and an air of revenge, there was that beautiful woman with blue hair in a Kampala restaurant who eyed him carefully after an introduction and said, “Everyone in Uganda will hate you for this.” Then came that dangerous afternoon when Pirtle, dressed in a suit and tie, clung to his briefcase on the back of a motorcycle speeding over a red-mud road to notorious, overcrowded Luzira Prison, above scenic Lake Victoria.

Pirtle dismounted, brushed himself off, and, once cleared through the gate, stepped into the barren yard where several hundred African inmates in yellow shirts and shorts were walking in circles for exercise. All of them, it seemed, had stopped to size up the one and only white man in the yard, who was sweating heavily.

It wasn’t until he entered a prison antechamber that Pirtle, a Seattle attorney all of six years, met his new client, and was swept by a wave of relief. He eagerly shook the hand of Thomas Kwoyelo, the first person to be tried by Uganda’s International Crimes Division court under the 1964 Geneva Conventions Act for willful killing, taking hostages, and extensive destruction of property.

At last, James Pirtle had his first felony case.

When he entered Seattle University School of Law a decade ago after a stint in the Navy, Pirtle fantasized about becoming an environmental crusader, hauling oil-company executives into court and suing them for raping Mother Nature. After passing the bar in 2006 and facing a menacing pile of student-loan bills, however, he accepted reality and wound

up in misdemeanor court defending domesticviolence offenders and drunk drivers.

But on that September afternoon last year, as he looked into the face of a man accused of mass murder and mayhem—a commander in the bloody army of child-abductor and sex-slaver Joseph Kony—Pirtle’s crusading instincts swelled anew.

Kwoyelo was 39, three years older than Pirtle. Yet to Pirtle, Kwoyelo looked like the child he’d been when he was abducted on his way to school in the northern Ugandan town of Pabo in 1985. Barely 5 feet 2 inches tall, Kwoyelo, though his eyes seemed dead, appeared shy, reluctant to let go of Pirtle’s hand.

Since his kidnapping by Kony’s men at age 13, Kwoyelo had grown into a murderer, but not necessarily a man, Pirtle thought. The two of them stood there nodding—Kwoyelo spoke Acholi, a regional language in a nation that favors Swahili and English. An interpreter was handy, but for the moment Pirtle and the accused war criminal just stared at each other in silence, their four hands clasped under the African sun.

“He is himself a victim,” Pirtle would later recall thinking at the time. “And now they want to punish him for it.”

Many Ugandans support that view, according to a report by the Justice and

Reconciliation Project, which works for peace in Africa. Speaking to residents in Pabo, where Kwoyelo’s mother lives and hopes for his return, project interviewers found agreement that “Kwoyelo should return home, reintegrate into the community, and reconcile with his victims and the community in general.” But “forgiveness takes time,” the report found, and welcoming home a war criminal—even one abducted into the service of atrocities— will be difficult for a scarred community, said one local official, since “It has been impossible for people to think of Kwoyelo as a human being.”

stitution. But Pirtle thinks Kwoyelo can prevail, since their legal challenge was initiated before the law had sunset.

“Amnesty is generally frowned upon in international law,” says Pirtle, “because there’s no accountability to it. But it’s the right thing. Thomas is a victim. Boys became killers, girls became sex slaves. That’s all they knew, that’s who they were. What he and others were indoctrinated to do as children, as awful as it was, is forgivable.”

Paul Ronan, a co-founder of Resolve, a U.S. activist group that has closely monitored Kwoyelo’s prosecution, says the Ugandans he’s spoken with are either indifferent to or displeased with the government’s decision to try Kwoyelo. As he wrote on his organization’s website, “Many point out that former LRA commanders, who held higher ranks (and even once commanded Kwoyelo) and are responsible for worse crimes, have been given amnesty. They think Kwoyelo has been unfairly singled out because he escaped [from Kony’s army] more recently and the Ugandan government needed a commander not yet given amnesty to put on trial in order to show the world that its new International Crimes Division is being put to use.”

Pirtle, a 36-year-old bachelor who studied war crimes in the Czech Republic, says a friend contacted him to ask if he was interested in helping Kwoyelo’s legal team. The case piqued his interest, he says—certainly more than another drunk-driving case in municipal court.

Born in Arizona and raised in Nevada, Pirtle joined the Navy in 1994 and became an aviator on P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft flying out of the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. He graduated from Western Washington University, then Seattle University, eagerly looking for that first case. Alas, it wasn’t a suit to bring Exxon to its knees in the world court; it had to do with a buddy whose girlfriend split and took all the good stuff with her.

“I said, ‘Hell, I’m a lawyer! Maybe we can sue her!’ ” Pirtle recalls, laughing. And they did—only to discover the girlfriend had hired a big law firm and filed a counterclaim against his client. “ ‘Oh, crap,’ I thought, ‘I’m

pursued in the forests of Central Africa by a multinational African Union force of 5,000 with support from 100 U.S. Special Forces soldiers. His crimes may pale in comparison to those of Uganda’s all-time most ruthless murderer, Idi Amin, president from 1971–79, whose regime is thought to be responsible for more than 100,000 deaths. But the manhunt for Kony has the blessings of President Barack Obama and other world leaders, along with high-profile U.S. entertainers such as Oprah Winfrey, whose foundation donated $2 million to Invisible Children, and actor George Clooney, who praised the video exposure of Kony, explaining, “I’d like indicted war criminals to enjoy the same level of celebrity as me.”

The Daily Telegraph of London reports that Kony is thought to have up to 500 troops, about half of them children or former child soldiers.

The United Nations says that despite the world’s growing knowledge of Kony’s horrors, he has relentlessly continued his campaign of murder and abduction, having kidnapped more than 600 child soldiers over the past two years.

But, as Pirtle notes, “Kony 2012,” while rightly indicting the warlord, also makes a case on behalf of his client. The children abducted from village streets, taught to beat and mutilate their fellow Ugandans and kill their parents? “That was Thomas,” Pirtle says.

Three former high-ranking LRA commanders have received amnesty in recent years, while several other LRA members who applied for amnesty were not prosecuted after they joined the Ugandan Army to fight the LRA. In May, Caesar Acellam, thought to be the third-ranking LRA officer in charge under Kony, was taken into custody. Unlike the lower-ranking Kwoyelo, Acellam was a volunteer for the Kony forces, yet there was immediate talk that he would be granted amnesty under the blanket pardon of the law. (He’s not likely to get it, however, observers say.) Even Kony at one point in 2006 was offered amnesty by the Ugandan government in the hope of facilitating peace talks. But he rejected it, saying it would have no effect on his case as an international criminal sought by The Hague.

There is a new hitch, however: The decade-old amnesty program ended last month in Uganda. It was allowed to expire over concerns that the law was no longer relevant—most combatants have returned to their homes—and may conflict with the con-

Director Allison Narver recently traveled through the Middle East and Africa, and while she hasn’t set her new staging of Romeo and Juliet in any real place, she says that her journeys caused her to reflect on the play in relation to societies that have known “ancient hatred.”

Counting from both its founding date and 1997 expansion, the Frye Art Museum is celebrating its 60th and 15th birthdays this year. Closed since April for a major spruce-up, it’s reopening today with three exhibits. One’s an excerpt from the permanent collection; the second relates how Charles and Emma Frye were influenced by the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago; but the third is actually new.

Visiting Chinese artist Liu Ding will attend and give a talk (at 2 p.m.) about his Take Home and Make Real the Priceless in Your Heart , his first solo show in the U.S. With a nod to Warhol, Liu has made commerce and commercialized images central to his art. He runs an online gift shop that will merge with the Frye’s, and he’s created a new series of half-finished paintings that riff on the museum’s famous Sin by Franz von Stuck. In other new paintings, he borrows elements from others’ works—a waterfall, mountain peak, or lounging dog—and repaints them on large white canvases. Liu is very keen on branding, signing, and valuation—what determines the worth of a copy versus the original (if there is an original). In which sense, it’s a short step from soup cans to Sin. Prompted in part by a talk Bill Gates gave on “creative capitalism” in the Third World, Seattle entrepreneur Whit Alexander— co-founder of Cranium games—decided on an unlikely next career path. Instead of sitting on his millions and joining a few boards, he decided to sell rechargeable batteries in the West African nation of Ghana. Joining him in the project was Maine journalist Max Alexander, his brother, who chronicles their start-up in Bright Lights, No City: An African Adventure on Bad Roads With a Brother and a Very Weird Business Plan

(Hyperion, $24.99). That there is a market in Ghana is beyond question; portable radios and flashlights are ubiquitous—also in villages beneath high power lines where no local electrical connection is made.

Reaching that market is a different matter.

The Alexanders have to inculcate a new consumer culture among those accustomed to buying the cheapest (yet short-lived) Chinese batteries on the market. They also have to train a sales force—essentially following the Avon model—and learn some local marketing techniques, like the gong-gong man who beats a bell to assemble the village. Whit Alexander’s mantra is that “they deserve better” in Ghana. Less the idealist, Max is at first confounded by a “medieval acceptance of the status quo,” yet comes to admire a resourceful country where nothing is discarded and everything is repaired, the opposite of our throwaway culture. But the book isn’t all business. The Alexanders endure hellish roads, eat rodents, and suffer medical mishaps—not malaria, but Max somehow manages to Super Glue his eye shut. Besides chainsaw sculpture, the canon of roadside art also includes rusty old car parts welded into whimsical figures.

The headlamps become eyes, the bumpers mouths, and so forth. In rural areas outside Seattle, sometimes the best form of vehicular disposal is just to cut up the old Ford and make it into a lawn ornament. Unfortunately, this is not the approach taken by Indianborn artist Avantika Bawa, who currently teaches at WSU, in her sculptural installation At Owners Risk. She’s a conceptualist and a minimalist who seeks to explore “combinations of order and antimonumentality, wholeness and fragmentation, containment and dispersal, to create experiential spaces and interventions.”

One of out every five professional baseball players in the U.S. comes from the Dominican Republic. Take a second to consider that stat.

Here’s another: Every big-league team runs a baseball academy on the island. Unless you follow baseball, you probably had little idea how important signing young Dominican players is to Major League Baseball. And unless you follow MLB, you probably can’t imagine what a mess it has made of the whole process. Narrated

by John Leguizamo, this doc follows two of the country’s hot prospects of 2009—shortstops Jean Carlos Batista and Miguel Angel Sano—in the months leading up to July 2, “signing day,” in which MLB allows kids who have reached age 16 to sign contracts with teams. Clearly, filmmakers Ross Finkel, Trevor Martin, and Jonathan Paley picked the right boys, as their individual paths to their July 2 paydays, so assured at the start, each become mired in controversy as the months wear on. An unexpectedly gripping portrait of how MLB’s sausage gets made, the film pits the frustration of the young players and their families, who see baseball as a way out of poverty, against the inflexibility of MLB, which battles age and identity fraud among players—and which declined to be interviewed for the film. Indeed, one family member calls MLB “a Mafia.” A rebuttal might have served the sport well. MICHEAEL LEAVERTON

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Elena is a tale of two apartments: a spacious chrome, glass, and marble luxury flat that might be anywhere in prosperous Western Europe, and a cramped unit in some exhausted-looking, distinctly Soviet-vintage apartment block with a view of a nuclear plant. Central to the movie is the distance, physical and psychological, and the mutual resentment, that exists between these spaces. Fiftyish working-class Elena (Nadezhda Markina) lives and serves her wealthy older husband, Vladimir (Andrey Smirnov), in the first, and visits her unemployed son from another marriage in the second. A domestic loggerheads results when Elena asks Vladimir a favor for her son’s family, and he declines; this comes to a crisis when a health scare inspires Vladimir to codify his intentions in a will, while also putting himself, weakened by illness, at the mercy of Elena, playing his nurse. In a few shrewd, telling scenes, the central couple is seen, together and separately, playing their various roles with their various contradictory loyalties.

With taciturn camerawork and a scalpel-like precision in dissecting class that recalls Claude Chabrol, Zvyagintsev’s film observes Elena making the decision of which family to be loyal to and how she asserts her newfound power as the idea of apocalypse hangs over the film’s troubling conclusion. Beasts of the Southern Wild A zealous gumbo of regionalism, magical realism, post-Katrina allegory, myth, and ecological parable, Beasts, the southern Louisiana-set debut feature of 29-year-old Benh Zeitlin, rests, often cloyingly, on the tiny shoulders of Quvenzhané Wallis. Co-written by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar, whose play Juicy and Delicious served as the film’s starting point, and using a cast of locals, almost all of whom make their acting debut here, Beasts strains to remind us of Hushpuppy’s wisdom and courage beyond her years. She is a motherless child: “She swam away,” explains her father, Wink (Dwight Henry), a chronically ill, frequently drunk man, of Mom’s absence.

He and Hushpuppy live in separate trailers in a grassy, overgrown expanse in a fictional bayou area called the Bathtub. Stomping around her ramshackle, squalid domain in white plastic rain boots, a dirty T-shirt, and orange Underoos, this

More than 40 years after the Carpenters made Paul Williams’ “Rainy Days and Mondays” a hit, the flamboyant songwriter, performer, and once-ubiquitous late-night personality is . . . defending the rights of 450,000 songwriters as the head of ASCAP? And, what? Writing music for the next Daft Punk record? These two factoids are enough to perk the interest of even a casual fan of the man who wrote “The Rainbow Connection” for The Muppet Movie in 1979. Yet neither are explored in this documentary. Instead we get manufactured drama about a potentially dangerous but completely benign trip to the Philippines, and reality TV– grade episodes like director Stephen Kessler’s assertion that Williams’ wife is ruining his and Williams’ trip. One could blame poor timing.

But the more likely reason is that Kessler didn’t want to make a documentary that explored the complexities of Williams’ career—from in-demand ’70s celeb to has-been addict who’s now clean and once more approaching cultural relevance. Kessler, it turns out, wanted to make a film about how much he loves Paul Williams.

“And then it happened,” Kessler says toward the end of the film, “Paul gave me what I always wanted: a sleepover.” Williams is ripe for documentary treatment in 2012, but Still Alive doesn’t do its subject justice. CHRIS KORNELIS

An exposé in the purest, most-pissed-off sense, director Léa Pool’s doc digs into the bizarre elision of philanthropy, corporate sponsorship, and sanitized pseudo-activism that the breast-cancer-awareness industry comprises.

The hallmark of this “movement,” of course, is the proliferation of pink doodads—everything from yogurt cups and teddy bears to cars and, incredibly, fast-food packaging—ostensibly bringing attention to the disease but mostly serving as promotional detritus for companies eager to cash in and camouflage carcinogenic product lines. The clueless, PR-challenged Susan G. Komen Foundation, whose flack

offers an on-camera defense, spearheads these efforts, which Pool and experts such as Barbara Ehrenreich and Dr. Samantha King (whose 2006 book inspired the film) methodically reveal to be, like the color itself, vomitously distracting and of marginal utility. Pool doesn’t discount the efforts of rankand-file pinksters, but she doesn’t let them off the hook, either; their commitment in the wraparound scenes of marches, rallies, and runs is undeniable, but they ultimately come off as misguided adherents to a ginned-up pseudo-religion. This is uncomfortable territory, but that’s precisely the point—above all, Pink Ribbons is an argument for reintroducing into public discourse the uncertainty, fear, and complexity that cancer sufferers and their loved ones know all too well. Sarah Polley’s second feature, much like her superb Away From Her (2006), thoughtfully probes the pitfalls of coupledom and thirdparty threats. Five years into their marriage, Torontonians Margot (Michelle Williams) and Lou (Seth Rogen) have regressed fully into sexlessness, heat and mystery having been supplanted by baby-talking, bathroom oversharing, and weirdly aggressive verbal game-playing.

For one of her infrequent freelance-writing gigs, Margot leaves their home—a spacious cocoon where cookbook author Lou perfects chicken dishes in the kitchen—for a quick research trip to a historic site in Nova Scotia. There she meets lean, hungry Daniel (Luke Kirby); seated next to each other on the flight back, sparks fly—particularly when they discover they live across the street from each other. Yet where Polley’s debut benefited from the solidity of the Alice Munro story on which it was adapted, Take This Waltz wobbles at times with the writer/director’s own credibility-straining choices: Daniel isn’t just a rickshaw driver but an aspiring painter, and signpost dialogue—“I don’t like being in between things,” Margot says of her fear of flight connections—abounds in the film’s first third. But there are enough unexpected delights, such as repurposing “Video Killed the Radio Star” during a critical moment between Margot and Daniel, to keep us interested in their drawn-out, teasing, tantalizing courtship. of masonry compounds with undulating stairs, huge vaulted roofs, and pavilion-style classrooms that were “open, like the revolution was,” as one of the octogenarian architects remembers. For a decade, the buildings were maintained as students took (apparently) free classes in dance, drama, literature, and so forth. Then the National Art Schools began to crumble in the tropical heat and humidity; there was a flood; and progressive architecture was displaced by cheap Soviet brutalism. Two of the three original architects fled to Europe, but filmmakers Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray tracked down all the interested parties for interviews, then added lots of good archival footage. Unfinished Spaces is undeniably narrow and nostalgic in its focus, perhaps best suited to AIA members, yet the elderly architects (Roberto Gottardi, Ricardo Porro, and Vittorio Garatti) seem remarkably free of bitterness about their ill-treated creation. ably good Spidey reboot celebrates the heartwarming arachno-genetic bar mitzvah in which a boy becomes a spider, and a spider becomes a man. Boy genius Peter Parker, played charmingly by Chia-haired Andrew Garfield, tours the Oscorp lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), where he receives a fateful spider bite. Webb (of the great (500) Days of Summer) was not the obvious debut for the director of a high-profile, big-budget action film. It’s all sharp-of-wit and sweetly sentimental for lots of reasons, including Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Peter’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May and a peroxide-haired, superbad Emma Stone as a gently ironic Gwen Stacy, a damsel in only moderate distress. Denis Leary, as Captain Stacy, father of Gwen, evinces his signature growly sarcasm and hits unexpectedly sweet notes of paternal affection. ROBOCOP Paul Verhoeven’s 1987’s satire is set in a ruined, near-future, near-lawless Detroit ruled by street thugs and Fortune 500 executives. In a sense, Verhoeven and his writers underestimated that proud city’s actual decline. With a Jason Statham remake supposedly in the works (and the guy’s deadpan isn’t much worse than Peter Weller’s), now’s not a bad time to revisit the dystopian Motor City. With his circuits on the fritz and his human memories 90 percent erased, poor RoboCop strides the city in heavy steel boots as an agent of justice. That he was created and programmed by corporate heels, he has no idea. The ghost in this machine turns out to be his residual conscience and sense of honor.

Out on the street, he’s first jeered, then cheered, as he turns his guns against real malefactors who wrote his source code. Maybe a Linux update wouldn’t be such a bad thing. UNFINISHED SPACES Something of a prelude to next week’s ByDesign Film Festival, this new doc commemorates an amazing architectural folly of the Cuban revolution. In 1961, Fidel Castro decreed that the campus for several National Art Schools be built on a former golf course, thus eradicating a decadent leisure pursuit of the idle rich. (“The luxury projects are over,” Castro is quoted as saying.) Three idealistic young architects, two of them Italian, created a network

noir is Raymond Chandler filtered through dirty bong water, where almost every line of dialogue is a hazy, hilarious non sequitur. My favorite is when accidental P.I. Jeff Bridges (forever the Dude) is ambushed in his tub by nihilists bearing a ferret. “Hey, nice marmot,” he greets them, with his usual unflustered amiability.

Nothing rattles Bridges’ Dude, not a lost rug, not a leering Tara Reid, not a lisping John Turturro, not a raving John Goodman, not a simpering Steve Buscemi, and not even shrieking performance artist Julianne Moore, who joins Bridges in a Busby Berkeley-style bowling fantasy that sums up the movie’s sweet, silly spirit. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE A sensation when it came out in 1971 (particularly in Britain, where it was blamed for youth violence), Stanley Kubrick’s treatment of the Anthony Burgess novel is suitably dark and chilly.

The theme of repressed humanity—however violent and ugly that humanity might be—matched perfectly with the director’s cool, clinical gaze. FREMONT OUTDOOR MOVIES Who you gonna call?

I think we all know the answer: the top-grossing film of 1984, Ghostbusters! Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Sigourney Weaver star in the paranormal smash comedy, which inspired only one so-so sequel and a surprising number of video games. It was, of course, a simpler time back then, when special effects weren’t quite so seamless, and the greatest threat facing New York City was the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. The movie was a total star turn for Murray, playing the loosest and least professional academic on campus.

Using Aykroyd as his uptight foil, with well-timed sideline zingers from the wonky Ramis (who co-wrote the script with Aykroyd), Murray is freed to embrace his inner, off-kilter leading man—he’s like Cary Grant on mescaline, utterly assured in everything he says, even when nothing he says makes the slightest bit of sense.

GILDA SEE THE WIRE, PAGE 19 THE GRAND ILLUSION Set during the Great War and released while the thunderheads of the next gathered, Jean Renoir’s The Grand Illusion depicted the wartime plunge of 1916 while also commenting on its present day of 1937, with Europe on the brink again. The film concerns two French pilots, working-class Lt. Maréchal (Jean Gabin) and aristocratic Capt. de Boëldieu (Pierre Fresnay), who, after being downed behind enemy lines by Prussian Rittmeister von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim), are passed through German prison camps while the war drags on. THE PACT There’s no pact in The Pact, which is indicative of this faux spooky tale’s guiding illogicality. A musty ghost story that morphs into a sluggish serial-killer mystery, Nicholas McCarthy’s film tries to distinguish itself by minimizing dialogue and settings, a strippeddown approach that extends to sketchy characters and a script rife with convenient, easy-to-assemble clues. McCarthy’s silence-is-golden tack can’t gussy up what’s otherwise a familiar undead saga in which Annie (Caity Lotz), searching for her sister and cousin at her dead abusive mom’s home, finds herself contending with malevolent spirits, shadowy specters, and other assorted bumps in the night. The writer/director’s camera repeatedly tracks his heroine through the house and zooms into dark closets that hold unearthly secrets, but his threadbare narrative has a tonal monotony that’s almost as enervating as the many plot points that make no sense, from Annie discovering that her mom’s place had a secret bedroom full of obvious-from-the-outside peepholes, to her failing to properly use a gun during a climactic showdown. While Casper Van Dien’s halfhearted Clint Eastwood impression as a grizzled cop elicits unintentional chuckles, the film’s scariest moment involves Annie thinking that, while relatives are sleeping in adjacent rooms and an unknown spook haunts the hallways, it’s appropriate to pee with the bathroom door wide open. The animation style of Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol is crisp, flat, and bright, their characters rendered with line-work recalling the Matisse and Picasso of ‘30s Paris. There are even traces of Tintin, and a simple comic-book plot to suit. Her father recently murdered, her policewoman mother obsessed with the case, lonely little Zoe has an affectionate pet cat named Dino. When she goes to bed at night, Dino bounds across the moonlit rooftops and leaps from building to building, leading the honorable, rubbery-armed burglar Nico to the loot. One such outing leads to a nest of gangsters connected with the death of Zoe’s father. This is a storybook Paris of the imagination, of the artist’s easel. (PG) Brian Miller Varsity THE DO-DECA-PENTATHLON In this sibling-rivalry comedy by Mark and Jay Duplass, Steve Zissis and Mark Kelly play two soft-bellied bros in their unhappy 30s. One’s married and a father, the other a pokerplaying black sheep. All convene at mom’s house for a weekend birthday gathering, where the brothers resurrect a 25-event contest that ended in a bitter tie when they were teens. (Ping-pong, laser tag, bumper cars, mini golf, and holding one’s breath under water are among the categories.) All the while, mom, wife, and son must be kept in the dark about the contest (though they eventually catch on). Do-Deca is funny and awkward (that’s a compliment), but it’s also essentially a comic sketch extended to 80 minutes when 30 would’ve sufficed. (NR) Brian Miller SIFF Cinema Uptown GRASSROOTS Phil Campbell wrote a book about his getting booted from The Stranger and subsequently running the insurgent city-council campaign of monorail fanatic Grant Cogswell way back in 2001. His opponent was incumbent Richard McIver (played by Cedric the Entertainer with affronted dignity). In the Don Quixote role of Cogswell, Joel David Moore keeps a well-balanced lid on his character’s mania and altruism. As the Sancho Panza straight man, Jason Biggs is surprisingly effective—a washout in one career, uncertain about the next, with an impatient girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose) waiting at home. In a way, Seattle is the worst market for this comedy by Stephen Gyllenhaal, since we all know the political outcome. But Gyllenhaal makes the monorail’s lost cause such plucky fun that you’re glad to buy the ticket. (NR) Brian Miller SIFF Cinema Uptown MOONRISE KINGDOM It’s 1965, the rainy end of summer on the rocky coast of a fictional New England isle. Twelve-year-old Sam (Jared Gilman) disappears from the Scout camp run by Randy Ward (Edward Norton). Also 12, bad-seed Suzy (Kara Hayward) flees her distracted lawyer parents (Frances McDormand and Bill Murray). Aided by what remains of Ward’s troop (“It’s a chance to do some first-class scouting!”), the grown-ups, including Bruce Willis’ Captain Sharp, mobilize to find the fugitive young lovers. Moonrise takes the form of old-fashioned pre-teen literature, but, as everything made by Wes Anderson, does so knowingly.

The escape Sam engineers for the pair is dangerous and crazy, but it’s also a way for him to exercise control, and to show off to a receptive audience. Suzy doesn’t have it so bad at home, but Sam’s flattering gaze gives her something she isn’t getting, and now won’t easily be able to live without. This utopian romance is thrown into relief by the quiet despair of the adults in Moonrise.

(Honestly, it’s not the world’s worst rescue mission.) And the barbecue, including brisket drawn into curly meat strands, is dry and saturated with acrid smoke that the stilted housemade sauces can’t hide. Better to focus on the accompanying baked beans, caked with ketchup and jalapeños.

Or move along to something sweet: The New Mexicans makes its own strawberry shortcake, chocolate cake, cherry creamcheese cake, and sugar-glazed cinnamon rolls that are sturdier and breadier than the sloppy, syrupy concoction that’s become a food-court mainstay. It takes 45 minutes for the rolls to rise, so Handy bakes them first thing every morning. “Usually we’ve got people waiting outside the door for them,” she says.

The restaurant’s defining sweet, though, is the sopaipilla, which New Mexicans don’t save for dessert. The inflated squares of fried dough are a side dish, although the standard addition of butter and honey transforms the flaky, light pastry into a meal-capper.

Handy makes them “by feel,” which her two daughters find infuriating, since they’re being groomed to take over the restaurant.

“The girls kind of have had a hard time with it,” she admits, adding that she’s not deviating from her plan to retire to eastern Washington in five years, even if loyal customers beg her to stay. Handy may make chicken and dumplings like her mother, but she roams like her father.

“I can’t wait to get back there,” she says.

juice, although the menu explains “We serve the dirty and the olives on the side so we can fill the glass with the goods!” The glass measures a whopping 16 ounces. If that offends your big-city sensibilities, you may not want to know that after the happy server/customer exchange described above, the server walked across the dining room and belched.

Maybe such folksy service isn’t everyone’s can of Bud Light. But homespun’s the operative word around here, a fact not lost on anyone wise enough to order The New Mexicans’ enchiladas.

In typical New Mexican fashion, The New Mexicans serves red- and green-chile sauces.

(In New Mexico, it’s common to mix both preparations on a single plate, Christmas-style.

In Everett, the twain don’t meet.) A brick-red bog, humming with the smoky, vegetal flavors of chiles, laps the edges of the red enchilada plate. The beefy sauce engulfs a stack of soft yellow corn tortillas, diced raw onions, iceberg-lettuce shreds, and grated cheddar cheese. Fleshy, salty pinto beans and two overeasy eggs, primed to infiltrate the gravy with the creaminess peculiar to yolks, round out the dish. The multidimensional sauce comes up short on heat, but The New Mexicans stocks most of the major hot sauces, so eaters with more resilient tongues can Tabasco or Tapatío their way to enchilada nirvana.

The stacked green enchiladas are similarly tame, but they’re so good that griping about the spicing is as pointless as complaining about the mildness of Oreos or Cheez-Its. The creamy enchiladas, baked in a casserole until the peaks burnish, are as comforting and undemanding as an old friend’s hug.

Each serving’s a tumble of sweet chiles, green onions, and coarse tortillas, topped with a mellow Jack cheese. In the lulling-food category, the green enchilada has a worthy competitor in the chicken and dumplings, which is more cream than chicken—a lone, stamp-sized piece of poultry bobbed in my bowl—but elevated by tender, free-form knobs of pastry.

A few other technical mistakes at The New Mexicans are more glaring. The nachos are

Unlike quaint, formal establishments like Canlis, you can walk into the Met in the standard Seattle work uniform of plaid shirt, jeans, and dark tennis shoes and shout at the TV screen. Whether this is a good thing is debatable, especially if you’re going to drop $75 on a porterhouse and a tumbler of top-shelf scotch. The steaks are, however, the dry-aged, Nebraska-raised (or wagyu) kind; and any carnivore, whether he’s dressed in work pants and a T or a three-piece suit, will be able to taste the tender, juicy difference. $$$ MEXICO CANTINA & VERACRUZ COOKING 600 Pine St. (Pacific Place, fourth floor), 405-3400. “Tex-Mex purist” may have the ring of oxymoron, but there are plenty of fajita and cheese-enchilada fans who would be stunned by the liberties taken at Mexico Cantina. Here the queso’s studded with mushrooms and served with banana chips. Heresy. Except that for upscale mall food, it’s none too shabby. The best bets are the Northwestinfluenced dishes, including a salmon Caesar and fish tacos. The margaritas are admirably strong, and—for an extra dollar—made with fresh lime juice. Serving “modern Mexican cuisine with a coastal flair,” Mexico cleaves to the Veracruz school of south-of-the-border chow. The Verdict: Three out of four is a fairly solid ratio. Little tweaks to the bar menu make it just that much better: The Sudseite is made with bar ginger, the “Vodka” Sweet Tea is made with Maker’s Mark, and the Old Fashioned (my favorite) incorporates rye and honey liqueur.

Kessler is at his very best, however, once you get to know him. Become a regular and he’ll be that bartender who has your drink on the table almost before you’re there—the one who notices and correctly interprets a subtle eyebrow from across the room. For example, see this gem, translating the history of Feierabend from GermanWiki: “ . . . Before the clocks in all houses, even pocket watches were for individuals, this daily celebration evening began with a long time in Catholic areas still used today . . . ” It could be talking about a call to prayer. Possibly about bell-ringing. Not sure.

Fortunately, my German roommate is somewhat more useful than Google, informing me that “Feierabend” is a German phrase used to indicate that one has worked enough, and that it is emphatically—as the American colloquialism would phrase it—”5 o’clock here, beginning right now.”

Much like its sister businesses, Prost! in Greenwood and West Seattle and Die Bierstube in Roosevelt, the attitude “Time for a break! I’ve earned it!” is evident at Feierabend. Even during work hours, bratwurst and beer flow freely over business lunches. After 5 p.m., it’s a party all the time.

The Barkeep: Kessler Dixon—Alaska-bred, trivia-sharing, story-topping, Journey-singing, artistically tattooed bartender extraordinaire—is probably responsible for at least half the UW students who have actually graduated in the past five years. When I moved to Seattle and started grad school, my cousin, then a recent UW grad, reassured me about life with the phrase “Meet Kessler.” He was right.

However, the happy hour (4-6 p.m. and 9 p.m.-close, daily) is an absolute steal, featuring $5 brick oven pizzas, under-$7 appetizers like calamari and mussels, and $4 house wines and specialty cocktails. Planet Java is a true diner, with proper red-upholstered booths and shiny tabletops and a checkered floor. Other signs that this place is the real deal: Cops frequent it. Wine lovers can go elsewhere to pontificate about sulfites and vintages: The infectiously noisy Purple Cafe is designed for classy good-timing. There are entrées on the menu, but the young money crowd which congregates here after work or before symphony concerts knows to stick to the small plate list, which offers smart accompaniments to the restaurant’s thematic flights and ample by-the-glass selection. $$

many local gardeners are likely confronting surpluses. Still, Freitas maintains that the tipping point at which his site will become reliably useful isn’t far off. “I don’t think it takes many people,” he says.

“It’s amazing how poundage adds up.”

That’s the revelation which sparked Freitas’ interest in creating an online trading program: He’s been mulling over the idea ever since his garden yielded too many carrots. “I could take them to work, but I thought it would be great to get fresh food back,” he recalls. So in true techie fashion, rather than ask his officemates for tomatoes or onions, he built a website.

Freitas envisions the site invigorating a grassroots (or kohlrabi-roots or onion-roots, depending on the participant’s leanings) economy, in which gardeners can convert their backyard hobbies into profitable businesses. “They might start specializing,” he says. “They might say, ‘I’m awesome at carrots, I’m going to go crazy with carrots.’ That’s what I’m hoping.” Freitas says he and co-developer Connie Parsons may eventually introduce a $20 annual membership charge, but currently the service is free. Tacoma’s Kevin Freitas doesn’t have a green thumb, but he has a web developer’s brain, which is why he believes his new produceswapping site, CropSwap.me, will be the first such online endeavor to succeed on a national stage.

“We’re doing it well,” Freitas says when asked what distinguishes CropSwap from other online exchanges. “I think there’s a disconnect where a lot of groups that want to do good don’t have that technical skill.”

The website, which launched on June 1, is organized so participants can buy, sell, or barter for other home gardeners’ unwanted bounty.

Freitas proudly describes CropSwap’s layout as “clutter-free,” and the adjective is accurate: A mostly white home page prompts users to select a “want” or “have” tab. A keyword search for “lettuce” reveals a Seattle gardener trying to unload eight large heads of red and green lettuce. “Will consider any and all offerings in exchange,” melanyrae62 writes.

Yet the site’s newness means the selection is slim. CropSwap couldn’t find any available rhubarb, kale, or radishes around Seattle, although

K Is for Calvin

An influential label, an abrasive founder, and a local editor’s biographical debut.

Charles R. Cross: Your book is subtitled “K Records and the Rise of Independent Music,” but it’s also the story of Calvin Johnson. How do you separate the two?

Mark Baumgarten: I want people to know

this isn’t a biography of Calvin Johnson, even if for the first 100 pages or more it reads like one. If I were writing a biography of Calvin, it would be much different.

Editor’s Note: Mark Baumgarten, a longtime music journalist who’s held spots on the mastheads of Willamette Week and Sound Magazine and is currently editor-at-large at City Arts, published his first book this week, a biography titled Love Rock Revolution: K Records and the Rise of Independent Music, (Sasquatch, $17.95). To get the goods on Baumgarten’s tome—and his experience with the label’s famously difficult founder, Calvin Johnson—we dispatched Charles R. Cross.

Like Baumgarten, Cross is a music journalist ( for a time he owned and edited The Rocket, which shut down in 2000) and biographer who has chronicled artists from Kurt Cobain to Led Zeppelin. Here’s what transpired:

Every author starts a book with assumptions. What surprised you the most about K Records?

The complete lack of musical training of anybody who was playing music around K. This was really a group of people who had no business playing music at all. When Calvin asked Bret Lunsford to be in Beat Happening, Bret had never played guitar in front of anyone, and Calvin had never heard him. Calvin is a character who seems very inflexible, but he also opens doors for people who haven’t proven themselves, which results in K being such an uneven collection of artists. I found that to be surprising in the most pleasant way possible.

You are saying Calvin is a great motivator, but maybe not a great editor?

I would have gone more into his personal life. I talk about his early life and his family, but I don’t talk about his personal life once he gets into being the engine running K Records. It’s a book about this community. While the book

There is always a question of motivation.

The challenge was to write about [Calvin] without being judgmental, without trying to apply motivation to him. Somebody asked me yesterday if I’ve become friends with him.

I was like, “No, I’m not his friend at all.”

Calvin announced he had no intention of reading the book. Did you mail him one?

I mailed an advance to the general manager at K and asked her to give some feedback and correct errors, and she did. But Calvin was so definite that he wasn’t going to read it that I felt to send it to him would be an insult. He’s not a man who seems to change his mind very easily.

Most of the characters in my books die, and that’s even sadder, trust me. It’s been said that biographers begin a book in love with their subjects, but by the end hate them.

I haven’t exactly found that to be true, but I do discover character flaws. How does Calvin sit with you now?

I don’t find him any less disconcerting.

From interview #1 until interview #15, I was still nervous around him, and I still felt like I was one word away from getting thrown out the door. But he is much less mysterious to me now. Not that I understand him.

Many people mistake his style as arrogance.

We all have ways that as we walk in a room, we attempt to control the atmosphere. Calvin is a master at controlling a room by being aloof.

Were you conscious in writing the book of not letting your opinions of your subject turn up on the page?

Your book [on Kurt Cobain] Heavier Than Heaven was really instructive to me along those lines, because you wrote that book without telling the reader what you thought. And I knew that to tell a good story, I had to take myself out of Love Rock Revolution. I felt if I put my opinions in, it might have come out warped, and would have been more negative.

Calvin never tried to put out an album by Nirvana, when Kurt would have liked that, and that’s a truly extraordinary commercial misstep. But you also have to admire Calvin’s iconoclasm. In a way, Nirvana influenced K more than K influenced Nirvana.

Of course, Nirvana influenced K. And Calvin’s proximity to someone who became so hugely famous influenced Calvin. Calvin came from a childhood where he understood the mainstream. That’s the great untold story of Calvin Johnson. He did not just pop out of a pink guitar case.

Cobain’s story ends darker than your book, so it can be hard, when I’m asked about that book, to end on a positive note. I often suggest that by leaving his childhood to create anything, Cobain’s story is an inspiring one. And Calvin’s enthusiasm about creating art is also inspiring.

It’s even more inspiring to me. You were a contemporary of Kurt Cobain, but I’m not a contemporary of Calvin’s—I’m one step removed. But the audacity that someone needed to have in 1982 to start a record label—that is amazing to me. Back then it took bravery to do that. I don’t know what the equivalent would be today. But it made it important for me to tell the story. THE SITUATION On a recent Sunday, I’m capping my weekend with a beery night at Liberty on Capitol Hill. Joining me is Otis Calvin III, better known as the local musician OCnotes. “I kind of want to start going

HOW HE GOT HERE Calvin splits his time between Pioneer Square and Bellevue, where his 2-year-old daughter, Bella Day-Mars (“It means ‘beautiful day on Mars,’ ” he explains), lives. “I love my daughter. She’s filthy,” he says, happily flipping through cellphone pictures of Bella eating, playing a toy guitar, and lounging in the grass in a model’s pose.

Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues Strung Out’s Jason Cruz talks about making a record before it’s written.

SW: What was the genesis of this tour, on which you’re playing 1996’s Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues and 1998’s Twisted by Design in their entirety?

Cruz: Everybody needs a gimmick these days, and we’re going to write a new record in the next few months, but we needed to do a tour and get out on the road. If we do this, hopefully we can lay off some of these songs and play some of the ones that we never play.

Do you remember the writing and recording of Wasteland Blues?

I remember we went to Razor’s Edge Studio in San Francisco . . . and I started doing vocals. [Label head Fat Mike] just goes, “OK, I don’t know what you’ve got,

but I’m just going to press play and you can sing and show me what you’ve got for every song.” And I didn’t have everything figured out at that time. I was just making shit up as I went along. I had words but no melodies. I was just going up to the microphone and making something up.

Is that how you had done your first album too?

That’s how I did the first three records.

Was that from inexperience, or was it just your process?

It was fun that way. To me, when you do demos, you can put in a good performance, and then when you go back to do the record, sometimes you can’t get that same performance. highly regarded hip-hop artists. But Calvin is also a songwriter of a different sort—at a recent low-key show at Fremont Abbey, I saw him sing a series of charmingly simple, stark songs that he plucked along with on an acoustic guitar. “That’s the real me,” he says.

“I’m not the best at guitar, but I understand movement of music.”

In 2008, Calvin released a record of his acoustic material called Yes . . . It Hurts, but he believes that because of his role as a black hip-hop artist, no one’s given those songs the time of day.

BTW Calvin doesn’t believe he could play a guitar show at a place like Neumos or the Crocodile—he doesn’t think people would come. It’s the narrow categorizations that bother him; why can’t a rapper also play guitar and sing? “People want to really plastic-wrap hip-hop artists—people that do performances without a band behind them—’cause they don’t understand. It doesn’t mean we’re any better or worse than any one of these rock bands. We’re just doing some different shit.” E

The Young Evils FRIDAY, JULY 13

The first incarnation of the Young Evils—the one that first splashed onto the scene two years ago—was guitarist Troy Nelson and his girlfriend Mackenzie Mercer, singing bright songs in upbeat unison; the duo’s live performances and their first record, Enchanted Chapel, were too sunny, catchy, and cute to pass up. The band’s since fleshed out to a quintet, and their sound has transformed as well. Back in November 2010, Nelson told me that the new material he was writing “is a little more rocking, a little darker . . . The songs are a little more three-dimensional, a little more complicated in terms of structure.” He was right—the songs on their newly released Foreign Spells EP are still quick and snappy, but they reveal a blacker, edgier sound and sport titles like “Dead Animals” and “Devil’s Barricade.” It’s an unexpected turn, and one that better suits their diabolical name. ome medical-marijuana patients are most comfortable when the access point for their cannabis provides as clinical an atmosphere as possible. As I’ve mentioned, all collectives fall somewhere on a continuum between the pharmacy model and the social-club model, with varying degrees of formality and relaxation. Plump, an access point in North Queen Anne, falls way over on the relaxed side of the spectrum.

Plump feels more like a kitchen than a pharmacy; the bud room has an oven, refrigerator, and sink. Lanky budtender Casey quickly emerged from the back on the Saturday I visited, his stony vibe fitting in well with the man-cave surroundings.

Eight strains of flowers were available, but none were labeled. Casey counted on his memory to tell him which jar held what, and I had to count on him. The pickings

A panel of experts agreed that the flowers didn’t look like any Skywalker OG they’d seen, but this could possibly be due to an early harvest, and underdeveloped calyxes seemed to back up this theory. The toke test also seemed to underline the possibility of an early harvest, because the effects, while quick in onset, were also swift to fade and slightly underpowered.

The Citrus Diesel’s smell leaned much more to the citrus side of its genetic heritage than to the diesel. The cannabis itself was the best I got at Plump, with an emphatic onset and a certain diffusion of thought processes. This lack of sequential thought probably would make it a bad idea to smoke Citrus Diesel just before taking tests of memory or logic.

Casey had told me that the Elephant produced the classic “heavy limbs” body stone of pure indicas, and he was on the money about that. This is an excellent strain for insomnia, because just a few minutes after you notice you’re glued to the couch and have no desire to move, your eyelids start getting pleasantly heavy.

Parking is available behind Plump, and you want to use it, because the only access from the front is a steep gravel path that looks treacherous. When visiting the website, be aware that the menu hasn’t been updated since December. E

The first wedding bands were a lot less glam than the ones you see at the mall, anyway. They were probably made of hemp, which means they only lasted a year or two. They weren’t so much symbols of romantic love as property markers, because until fairly recently (20thcentury-ish), men didn’t even wear them.

The possibility that he could hurt himself wearing a ring at work should make you a lot more understanding about it. I mean, how would you feel if he lost a finger because you insisted he wear some hackneyed symbol of his love? And you’d probably get angry if it fell down the drain while he had to keep taking it off and putting it back on every time he went to work, right? So what’s the point?

My suggestion is that you and he compromise. Buy a cheapish wedding band for the ceremony and other occasions, like your anniversary dinner or Thanksgiving with your buttinsky family. The rest of the time forget about it—except to count your lucky stars that this is his worst “fault.” E
