Violence is a major public health problem in the United States
Help us stop violence. “We must work together as a region to stop violence in all forms. In King County, 31% of injury deaths were from homicide or suicide. We can come together to stop this violence from taking place.”
Pete von Reichbauer, (von-Rite-bow-er)
King County Councilmember
pete.vonreichbauer@kingcounty.gov “Preventing violence is a major piece in reducing the current inequalities that exist in health and safety.”
- Prevention Institute, May 12, 2011
Do you know a victim of domestic violence? We need you to help them. • Believe your friend. • Listen and be supportive. Be there when you are needed. • Offer suggestions and ideas, not opinions. Don’t make decisions for them. • Let them know that their feelings are OK and that it’s not their fault. • Remember that change takes time and your friend is facing hard choices. If they decide to leave, it may be a long process.
Do you know someone who is a suicide risk? Common warning signs include: • A previous suicide attempt. • Current talk of suicide or making a plan. • Giving away prized possessions. • Increased alcohol and/or drug use. • Signs of depression, such as moodiness, hopelessness and withdrawal. • Hinting at not being around in the future or saying goodbye. • Strong wish to die or a preoccupation with death. • Experiences drastic changes in behavior.
How to help: Showing that you care by talking about your own feelings and asking them about theirs is a good step. Use statements such as: “I’m worried about you, about how you feel.” “You mean a lot to me. I want to help.” “You don’t seem like yourself lately. I’m here, if you need someone to talk to.” Don’t ever offer to keep talk of suicide a secret, even if you are asked, and don’t leave the person alone without safety resources. Instead, get help from available resources and someone with the skills to provide support. Midwifery practice does much more than deliver babies By Greg Allmain Federal Way Mirror Essential Healthcare and Midwifery is much more than two people who help deliver babies. Operated by certified nurse midwives Simon Adriane Ellis and Laura MacPherson, EHM is a new Federal Way practice that began taking patients in October. "We do all the primary care type stuff," said Ellis. "We do well woman visits (and gynecological) problem visits. We do a lot more than just pregnancy. People see us as only seeing pregnant people, which we do love, to do pre-natal care and catch babies."

Resolve to fall in love with healthy eating this year By Hong Nguyen, MD
About the writer: Hong Nguyen, MD, is a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic in Federal Way and a member of the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital. Contact (888) 825-3227.
St. Francis Hospital Does cutting calories top your list of New Year’s resolutions? If so, good for you for taking the first steps toward creating a healthier lifestyle. Healthy eating and increased physical activity are necessary to lose weight and maintain a weight that is appropriate for your gender, age and height. Get rid of the old idea that a diet is something to endure for a month after which you go back to your old habits. Instead, embrace a healthier lifestyle as a lifetime commitment. This means a commitment to changing your eating habits so that the foods you love are the same foods that are good for you. Then, your meals will become balanced, varied and enjoyable. When you take the long view, you adjust your normal eating just a little at a time so that you gradually achieve the weight that’s healthiest for you. This may be as simple as substituting herbs for butter on your vegetables. Importantly, make each small change a new lifetime habit. A great place to start is by reading food labels at the supermarket and avoiding processed, packaged foods such as muffins and cookies. These can cause your blood sugar to rise and then drop, which leads to more hunger and cravings. Most food labels provide a list of ingredients and many contain additional information about the nutritional value of the contents. The nutrients listed often include calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein and other vitamins and minerals. When looking

sultant. She'll come and see our high-risk patients and things like that," MacPherson said. "We deliver babies at hospitals, we have that OB/GYN backup. Many of our patients choose epidurals, but for those who don't, we offer water birth." Ellis said some patients do express concern about the level of training that he and MacPherson have, but again, said that Ho's partnership is valuable in reassuring patients. "We have really tight consulting relationships with OB's, our practice is owned by an OB, and we talk to her constantly. So if anything changes, or is unusual, we have that person, always, to check in with," Ellis said. "If complications come up and it's no longer a normal, healthy pregnancy, we work with her (Ho). We don't refer out, we don't drop the patient completely and stop being in touch with them. We have that continuity of care." For both Ellis and MacPherson, they hope the relaxed setting of their office, along with their philosophy of how to treat patients, makes people feel at ease and allows them to communicate more freely than they otherwise might with a doctor in a clinic. "We see teenage women. Sometimes it's easier to sit and talk with a midwife when you're 14 and want to talk about birth control or other concerns," MacPherson said. "To sit and be able to talk with a midwife for half an hour rather than going to see a pediatrician, where you see the receptionist, the medical assistant, and then the doctor comes in for ten minutes."
at any list of ingredients, remember that ingredients are listed in order of their relative weight. The first ingredient is the one that makes up the greatest part of the product. When it comes to healthy eating, you should feel inspired about the benefits you will experience when you improve the foods you eat. As you eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins, you can avoid complications if you already have a health problem and prevent future problems from occurring. In the short-term you may notice these changes when you improve your diet: More energy, better sleep, improved mood and greater ability to move and exercise. Over time, healthy eating can also resolve some health problems and reduce your risk for others. These include less risk for type 2 diabetes; lower blood pressure and cholesterol; and reduced risk for heart disease and certain types of cancer. Most experts agree that the best way to lose excess weight and keep it off is to avoid fad diets, get plenty of exercise, improve your eating habits (and the type of foods you eat), and lose weight gradually rather than quickly. If you are looking to shape up your diet and your health in the new year, tell your doctor about it. Your doctor can support you on your journey toward healthy living by helping you plan a safe and effective strategy for losing weight and keeping it off for life.

"We asked essentialfedway. for the big comfy chair so people com or call (253) can just sit and have a chat, and 237-0624. not be sitting on the table and feeling very clinical. We brought in artwork and colors that would make the space more comfortable to provide that personal environment." Another part of their philosophy is that pregnant women are healthy and that it's a collaborative effort between the expectant mother and her health care providers. "We believe that pregnant women are healthy. They come to us not sick. We don't tell them what to do. We give them options, discuss what our training has taught us, what their personal experience has been, and what they choose to do. (It's) a shared decision model," MacPherson said. EHM is open to a broad spectrum of patients, according to the duo. They take all kinds of insurance and almost every kind of DSHS coverage. They operate on the weekends, and are more than willing to accommodate those who don't speak English as a first language. Because of their personal backgrounds, they said, they are also happy to receive patients from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT), along with people of color. "We're really trying to bring a practice that's accessible, personal and welcoming," Ellis said.
Women’s Health and Breast Center earns honors
From staff reports: The Women’s Health and Breast Center at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR designation indicates that the Franciscan Health System facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment and technology, as well as quality control procedures and protocols. The national professional association conducted peer-review evaluations of the Women’s Health and Breast Center by board-certified physicians. “This recognition of our program as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiologists is a testament to our commitment to providing high quality care, ensuring patient safety, and satisfying our patients,” said Cynthia Kannenberg, manager of the Women’s Health and Breast Center at St. Francis. Established in 1997, the center is accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy). The facility has earned numerous citations for quality and excellence, including designation as a Certified Quality Breast Center in 2009. A total of 7,776 mammograms were performed at the Women’s Health and Breast Center at St. Francis Hospital last year.

Breakthroughs in the treatment of toenail fungus By Dr. Emily Sabbagh
Contact You can receive a complimentary consultation at Federal Way Laser Surgeons to determine if the Pinpointe Laser is the right treatment for you. Visit www. federalwaylasersurgeons. com or email dresabbagh@gmail.com.
Federal Way Laser Surgeons We have all seen someone with thick ugly toenails. Perhaps you or your loved one suffers from onychomycosis, or toenail fungus. In fact, one out of nine people has some toenail fungus, which until recently has been very hard to eliminate. Toenail fungus begins with subtle signs and symptoms involving distortions in the shape of the toenail or crumbling toenails. The toenails may become thickened and begin to have signs of yellow or white spots. Sometimes the toenails may hurt and have bad smelling debris built up under the nails. Finally, if nothing is done to control the onychomycosis or toenail fungus, the nail can become separated and thickened. Disfigurement can lead to more serious conditions. People with toenail fungus often spread it to their fingernails buy picking their feet. Toenail fungus is quite common. Our feet are often confined to hot sweaty shoes and socks, which makes for a perfect breeding ground for the nail fungus. Fungus does not need sunlight to thrive. The shoes and toes are the perfect combination for the fungal overgrowth. Once it enters around the toenails or fingernails, the fungus has an endless supply of nourishment in the form of the nail beds and cuticle. Toenail fungus loves the dark moist environment of the feet. The circulation around the toes is not as good as other parts of the body. When oral medication is taken to combat the fungus, the diminished circulation cannot bring the medicine effectively
to the infected toenails. This is one reason that the toenail fungus is so hard to control with daily oral medicine as well Photo courtesy of Dr. Sabbagh as topical medicine. Additionally, certain medicines used to treat toenail fungus have adverse side effects that can effect the liver. This can be a problem for individuals suffering from other medical conditions such as diabetes, which involves liver function. The Pinpointe Laser is an FDA-approved laser to treat toenail fungus. The infected toenails become black or brown because that is the color of the fungus. The Pinpointe Laser works by targeting the pigmented fungus. The Pinpointe Laser utilizes the correct wavelength and spot size to effectively target the pigment in the black nail fungus. The beauty of the Pinpointe Laser is that it performs laser toenail fungus removal in one 20-minute appointment without pain. Home remedies on the Internet are abundant for toenail fungus but are ineffective. Mouthwash to treat toenail fungus does not work. Not all black toes should be treated with a laser. There are certain dermatological conditions that can cause black toenails and this may not be treatable with a laser. Talk to your dermatologist or family doctor about the new Pinpointe Laser to determine if the Pinpointe Laser is right for you.
