SAVE YOURSELF!
Holiday Survival Tips for Black Friday & Beyond by Charyn Pfeuffer
As the holiday season verges on full-tilt frenzy, we’re here to help you
unique findings at every turn
make smart shopping decisions. In fact, we’ve compiled five holiday guides with more than 130 local gifts to help you start crossing names off your list. From your dog walker to your daughter’s teacher, we’ve got you covered with dozens of items either made in the Pacific Northwest or sold at independent small businesses, because your holiday budget helps our local stores survive.
Save money … Man around town (well, the Pacific Northwest, really), Scott McMurren helps locals and visitors alike explore the Emerald City on the cheap. In his discount travel book, The Seattle TourSaver (www.seattletoursaver.com), cost-conscious folks can save big on more than 100 offers, including whale-watching tours, flightseeing trips and a cruise to Victoria. It’s a great way to get out and explore Seattle and beyond (deals extend to Victoria and the San Juan Islands, too), but also a great way to save some cash when entertaining out-oftown family.
5030 ROOSEVELT WAY NE SEATTLE, WA 98105 (206) 524-8554 WWW.SCARECROW.COM SUN.-THURS. 11am-10pm FRI. & SAT. 11am-11pm
From low-cost films to free food and every service in between, David Volk, author of The Cheap Bastard’s Guide to Seattle: Secrets of Living the Good Life — For Less! (GPP Travel, 2010) shows readers where to find the best bargains in Seattle. It’s like having a frugal best friend who knows all the best budget places to show you. Save time in the kitchen … Like many Seattleites, I love to cook, but want to spend less time in the kitchen during the holidays and more time savoring the company of friends and loved ones. Chef and father Greg Johnson cooks real food for his kids and shares six tips on how easy it can be to whip up fast, fresh and tasty dishes during the holidays that will make the whole family happy (www.chefandfather.com). 1. Braising meats may take a long time, but is relatively maintenance-free time, so it frees up time and space to do other things. 2. Freezing homemade sauces and other dishes in family-size portions is a great way to whip up dinner in minutes. 3. Slice meats into discs, and then pound thin to reduce cooking time to seconds on the stovetop, as opposed to roasting for minutes in the oven. 4. Make your own frozen pizzas. Just cook a few extra on “Pizza Night,” but only cook them halfway. Freeze in a large sealable bag, and you are ready to pop them in the oven whenever you want. 5. Every dish you make, ask yourself, “How can I use the leftovers as another dish, lunch or snack?” 6. Do what restaurant chefs do: Measure out and prep ingredients the night before to make quick breakfasts and school lunches the next morning.

Save your sanity … Need a break from it all? Like, right now? Download Seattle Weekly’s free “Happy Hours” mobile app, which will point you toward the cheapest hooch available at any hour of the day. We know that money can get tight during the holiday season, but with all the great happy hours around town — many of them occurring twice daily — you have every reason to put down the shopping bags for a few minutes and toss back a few. Search “Happy Hours” in your app store and let the fun begin.

Speaking of survival, we’re also here to help out with some seasonal survival skills — like saving. Fact: The holidays can be tricky to navigate, and sometimes, even in a time notorious for excess, less can be more. Here are a few scenarios where you can be a bit more resourceful this holiday season.

A New Way to be Human Beloved Seattle personality, author, KUOW contributor and former pastor (as well as the first openly gay Episcopal dean in the US), Robert V. Taylor shares his lifelong friendship with Desmond Tutu in this beautifully written book for those seeking an authentic way of living. Taylor’s memoir recalls his and Tutu’s demonstration against apartheid and how they went on to create the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation. It also delves into his coming out process during his dean selection process. There are countless lessons to be learned within the pages of this book among them, love and compassion.” (New Page Books, 2012) The Elliott Bay Book Company 1521 10th Ave., 206-624-6600 elliottbaybook.com $15.99

Local architectural designer by day/fashion designer by night, Christine Chaney creates ethereal scarves, shrugs, jackets and dresses that make both sexes swoon. Named Seattle Magazine’s “2012 Best Emerging Designer,” we adore the versatility of her crochet hooked garments, especially the capelet. Chaney’s inspired pieces enable our city’s love affair with winter accessories, and we’re all the more stylish for it. Besides, how you not love a designer whose motto is: “Nobody gets screwed making this clothing, but if you wear it, you might just get laid.” Velouria 2205 NW Market St., 206-788-0330 christinechaneycreative.com/craft $132

Bringing Christmas to West Seattle For 25 Years. 206-935-9276 • 5275 California Ave SW Sure, it’s hard to beat the screaming Black Friday deals that many big-box retailers put on the shopping block. But lining up to score discounts the minute storefront doors open — usually at the crack of dawn — isn’t a sport meant for everyone.
360-758-2620 | 888-294-2620 2579 West Shore Drive Lummi Island, WA 98262
McManus fesses up that Black Friday isn’t the biggest retail day for Capitol Hill shops; Small Business Saturday is when shoppers really show up. “Shoppers are really locally-minded on that day, and really appreciate the flyers with the listing of all the local shops offering specials or deals,” she says. In addition, the Broadway Sunday Farmers Market will feature some deals that Sunday, and of course, the Capitol Hill Indoor Flea Market will sell arts, crafts and thrift goods upstairs in the OddFellows Building from 11a.m. to 3p.m. on Saturdays. Still not convinced to shop local? Lisa Nakamura, chef and owner of Allium on Orcas Island, knows a thing or two about small-town economy. Her children’s’ book, Bucky the Dollar Bill (www.createspace.com/3867098), traces how a single dollar bill spent on Orcas Island supports small, independent businesses and benefits the community. “Buying local is like throwing a pebble into a pond; the ripples spread far and wide,” says Nakamura. This year, give your fingers a rest, your feet a workout and your neighborhood businesses some love. For a complete listing of Shop the Hill Black Friday sales, deals, specials and online-only offers, visit www.capitolhillseattle.com.

For the less intrepid, you don’t have to hit the mall to save money this holiday season. Instead head to Capitol Hill, where Audrey McManus, Marketing and Education Coordinator of Toys in Babeland, in cahoots with the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, has done a killer job organizing a local shopping event the past three years. This year, she has the added support of Sound Transit, capitolhillseattle.com and United Reprographics. Last year, more than 80 businesses banded together to offer sales and deals to holiday shoppers throughout the entire postThanksgiving weekend; Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, plus Sunday. Although retailers are still being added to the roster and nailing down their sales, McManus hopes for even stronger participation this holiday season.

Here are some of the things you love about our local culture. “Themed costume pub crawls and parties, dancing in museums at midnight, improv, rockin’ wine events, neighborhood businesses banding together to curate events, public art, performances.” Keridwyn Deller of Capitol Hill, www.seattlepockets.com “Talking to strangers (everyone has a story!) and drinking a frozen latte from Caffe Ladro (shh ... a secret menu item and the best blended beverage on the market!) are two of my favorite things about Seattle.” Dawnelle D. of Rainier Beach, order-taker extraordinaire at Marination “Seattle has a dynamic dance scene, with many interesting performances from local and visiting choreographers and troupes. I’ve had season tickets to the UW World Dance series the last few years and really enjoyed it.” Kirsten Graham of Mount Baker, owner, KGPR

“My favorite thing about Seattle’s local culture: Village-style atmosphere with restaurants, shops close to home, and downtown is a bus ride away!” Michael D. of Upper Queen Anne, Stormnet Media Blitz “In Seattle, it’s all about balance. People here will be just as happy eating a messy, drippy Cuban sandwich at Paseo, Seattle’s most popular hole-in-the-wall, as they are dining out at a fancy restaurant … they just have to make sure they get both experiences.” Keren Brown of Queen Anne, FranticFoodie.com “My favorite spot on Seattle’s culture scene is Jazz Alley, where you can sit and listen to jazz greats such as Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Branford Marsalis from tables right up against the stage.” Sheri Doyle of West Seattle, Pacific Northwest Journeys “Seattle is the home of ‘niche’ — whether it’s an off-the-wall business idea, underground sub-culture, or an unlikely style of music, there’s a sub-community somewhere in Seattle that will embrace it.” Glenn C. of Wallingford, Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators “I love the small-town feel of Seattle and its big-city amenities as it relates to the accessibility of amazing culture, art and food.” Diana Naramore, co-owner of Ballard and Greenwood Sip and Ship “Whenever I feel like complaining about Seattle, all I have to do is remind myself that I grew up in the middle of Kansas.” Shawn Kralicek of Night Gallery Records “Twilight Artists Collective, with its local art, crazy jewelry and inspiration galore, is the perfect place to have a last-minute-gift panic attack. “ Beth L. of West Seattle, designer at A Crowded Coop “I’m always dazzled by the Alvarez Family Farm’s market stalls overflowing with produce, especially the brilliant-colored chiles of late summer.” Gretchen Goehrend of Magnolia, founder of India Tree Gourmet Spices and Specialties “From the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade, to School of Rock performing at The Crocodile, to parking-strip food gardens, we love everything Seattle.” Nicole and Brian Durbin of Columbia City, co-owners of Black Bottle, Black Bottle Postern and The Innkeeper “Love Sundays in West Seattle. The Farmers Market at the Junction is amazing, and where else can you hit a world-class bakery (Bakery Nouveau), grab some kitchen supplies (Capers), shop for adorable clothes (Carmilia’s), pick up some hipster shoes (the Sneakery and Clementine), sip coffee while you browse for CDs (Easy Street), and run into 20-30 people you know?” Anita L. of West Seattle Yes, we can and should be proud to live in a city rich with culture and with more arts per capita than many bigger cities. What follows is a list of carefully chosen cultural gifts and experiences that will bring plenty of pleasure and NW pride to all of your recipients. Now go on and GIVE ’EM CULTURE!

We know that Seattle is the Northwest’s best and most beautiful city. Here at Seattle Weekly, we (mostly) sing its praises for pages on end every single Wednesday, so we may be a bit biased. When we started compiling this gift guide on local culture, we wanted to get the scoop from our readers and what Seattle’s culture means to you. From our iconic Space Needle to unique celebrations (cyclists don’t ride buck naked in every city, you know), there’s a reason why you endure an average of 155 days of rainfall each year.

Tickets to see The End’s Deck the hall Ball, Dec. 4, KeyArena: Not surprisingly, this show is sold out. AND it’s three weeks before Christmas. Which means if you can procure a pair of tickets for the one you love (who also loves the Killers, M83, Metric, the Lumineers, etc.), you are going to be setting the stage for an historic holiday season. Holiday-themed presents are always better (and less dated) in advance, and they give the holidays a longer shelf life. OK, down to the nitty gritty of getting tickets to this sold-out show. First: Check Ticketmaster every morning. More tickets will be (quietly) released as the date approaches. Second: Check every hour the day of the show. Third: Go to the show and get tickets at the door (it sometimes happens) or from scalpers (it won’t be as bad as you think; there are LOTS of seats in KeyArena). Good luck!
the Beatles stereo Vinyl Box set: There are several ways you can go about getting all 14 Beatles LPs. If you have the
scratch ($300-plus), picking up this newly released box set of Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, etc., on thick, fresh vinyl is a good way to go. Even if your loved one is a longtime Beatles fan, they may never have had every record at the same time (I can’t be the only one plagued by this trend). If your budget is somewhat limited, that’s all right. You can usually find just about every Fab Four release in the REALLY CHEAP used-vinyl bins at Everyday Music on Capitol Hill. Yeah, the copies will be . . . a bit worn, but they’ll average about $7 each. You’ll also score some points for crate-digging.
Beck hansen, song reaDer (out Dec. 7 via McSweeney’s): Beck’s new “album” isn’t really an album at all, it’s a BOOK OF SHEET MUSIC! Which sounds kinda pretentious, I know. But it’s actually pretty fantastic. And think about this: Would you rather sit around the piano this Christmas belting out the same old standards, or rallying the family band in one of the first-ever performances of a Beck original? Give this to the musician in your family and watch as it keeps on giving as you all learn the tunes. tickets to sasquatch! We have no idea who’s playing the big ol’ shindig at the Gorge, going down May 24-27 (but last year’s lineup of Beck, Jack White, Girl Talk, etc. should give you an idea of the vibe). We do know a few things: 1. This festival is going to sell out. 2. There is someone on your list who’s going to freak when you give them tickets for Christmas. 3. Grandmas, this one is better than cash, since it can only be enjoyed and CANNOT be used to pay down debt. Tickets are on sale now for $300 (includes camping). Yes, the price will go up in the spring. a ukulele from Dusty strings: The history of the ukulele: First the Hawaiians played them, then Eddie Vedder played one, then all the fecking hepsters played

them, and now it’s your turn! The ukulele is having a revival for a reason: It’s adorable, it’s portable, it’s laughably easy to learn (I was successfully strumming “Cecelia” within an hour of owning mine), and you can slap down a Benjamin and walk out with change, a ukulele, and a case. Throw in a set of lessons at Dusty Strings and you’re one step closer to a Jason Mraz sing-along.

The Art of Silliness
We all know the benefits of shopping local abound: you’re keeping your money circulating in the local economy, you’re directly supporting others and their families, and you get to interact with the producer of whatever you’re purchasing—which is a bonus whether your biggest concern is the quality of the product, the sourcing of the materials, the creative process, or just making a connection with someone in your community.
Learn to make and embellish 3D wool objects using fiber and felting needles. You’ll have time to explore several interchangeable techniques to make unique jewelry pieces, small soft toys and replicas like fruits and veggies, or even free-form abstract sculpture.

tickets to see “land of the sWeets: the Burlesque nutcracker” at the triPle door (Dec. 11-16, 18-24, 26-27): This one almost goes without saying (almost). Even the most ca’lous, cynical individual lets a little eggnog into their cup this time of year. And the “Burlesque Nutcracker” at the Triple Door really does offer a little something for everyone. For those who aren’t fans of Nutcracker, there’s burlesque; for those who don’t like burlesque, there’s Nutcracker; and for those who don’t cotton to either, there are inventive mixologists who aim to please and have a special talent for hitting their target. the hunger gaMes: songs froM district 12 and Beyond: No, this isn’t a Christmas album! And that’s good, because Christmas albums are dated on Dec. 26. This album—featuring music inspired by, though mostly not included in, the film—is easily one of the year’s best albums. Brilliantly curated by T-Bone Burnett (of O Brother, Where Art Thou fame), the album includes choice cuts from Arcade Fire, Secret Sisters, Neko Case, and, yes, Taylor Swift. It’s a solid go-to album for anyone on your list with a soft spot for indie rock, country, rock, or pop.

gift card to rock Box: Gift tip #354: Buy someone a present that will also benefit you. I would hope that gifting someone an experience at Rock Box, Capitol Hill’s uber-modern, Japanese style karaoke parlor, would secure you an invitation to spend a rainy, dreary evening in a small room belting out Aerosmith’s “Cryin’.” Material things don’t last forever, but the night you spend with your homies stuffed into a small room, belting out “American Pie” under the influence of sake, will last a lifetime. Bonus round: It’s happy hour all day long on Sundays.

Get The Goods From Your Local ‘Hoods by Charyn Pfeuffer
If you live in Seattle, you’ve probably managed to kick its bajillion stereotypes to the curb. Sure, it’s gray and gloomy for months on end, but it’s also one of the most beautiful, lush, vibrant cities in the country. Seattleites may wear more fleece and flannel than the national average, but it doesn’t mean we can’t make a fashion statement. And despite the belief that we still listen to grunge 24/7, our dynamic music scene is constantly evolving and producing headline-grabbing performers like Fleet Foxes, the Head and the Heart, Macklemore and Shabazz Palaces. We all have our reasons why we love the Emerald City. As we wax poetic on the merits of shopping local in this holiday gift guide, it only seems appropriate to share why I love Seattle. I could list hundreds of reasons why I call the Pacific Northwest home, but here are ten. 1. SHOWING OFF: The first place I take a visitor from out of town is Ray’s Boathouse, a restaurant in Ballard. The views of seals playing, Puget Sound, and snow-capped Olympic Mountains from the upstairs deck are pretty spectacular. Plus, you see working fishing boats returning to Salmon Bay with their catch, so the seafood is about as fresh as it gets.
3. NATURE: If I want a nature fix, I go to the Cascade Mountains. Mount Si is a decent sixmile hike, which takes folks through multiple ecosystems to its 4,167-foot peak. It scores extra points for being dog-friendly. 4. URBAN PARKS: For a moment of Zen, I can hide away at Fremont Peak Park. This postage-stamp-size community park on a residential stretch offers panoramic views of Ballard, the bridge, and Salmon Bay. It’s one of my favorite places to watch the sun set. 5. COFFEE: When I need a caffeine fix, I head to Lighthouse Roasters. This tiny neighborhood coffee shop has been roasting beans in vintage machines since 1995 and makes the best mocha I’ve had in Seattle. I brew their “Lighthouse Blend” with a French press at home daily, but regularly visit the shop for its perfect foam and unpretentious baristas. 6. DRINKING AGAIN: When I’m feeling cash-strapped I take advantage of Seattle’s twice-daily happy hours. There’s absolutely no reason to not eat and drink well in the Emerald City. Early happy hour is mostly standard across the board, typically with deep discounts on food and booze. Late-night happy hour usually lures imbibers with cheap food deals. 7. MUSEUMS: Seattle’s best museum, in my opinion, is the Museum of History & Industry, and man, am I excited for the grand opening on December 29 at their new location in Lake Union Park. I’m a nerd for time and place facts, and this museum chronicles 150 years of Seattle’s history. If I had to rate a favorite museum based on its gift shop, Seattle Art Museum (SAM) takes the retail win, hands down. The pottery, jewelry, and knit goods are well worth maxxing out your credit card. 8. OUTDOOR ACTIVITES: My favorite jogging/walking route is around Green Lake. I rollerblade, walk my dog, or dish with my girlfriends on its 2.8-mile loop. During the summer, you can swim in the lake. In cooler months, I grab a pre-stroll Mexican hot chocolate at Chocolati Café near Stroud Avenue North. 9. DAY TRIPS: Just outside Seattle, you can visit Whidbey Island. It’s a quick ferry trip from Mukilteo, and the island is the perfect day-trip getaway with wineries (Whidbey Island Winery is quite good), local Penn Cove mussels (in Coupeville), and Deception Pass State Park (35 miles of trails). Remarkable bridges make me weak in the knees, and the arched version at Deception Pass is a suspended, two-lane stunner. 10. NEARBY WEEKEND GETAWAYS: In the winter, I love to visit the San Juan Islands. Sure, the off-season weather may be moody and gray, but most of the tourists have gone home, hotel rates drop, restaurant reservations are a snap to secure, and wildlife is more abundant. Book a cabin at Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island and take advantage of the hot springs overlooking Otter Cove. What do YOU love about Seattle? Send me a tweet at @charynpfeuffer with the hashtag #SeattleWeekly and I’ll re-tweet my favorite hometown pride shout-outs.
S w GIFT GUID E #3, B UY LO CAL • ad ve rtisi n g supplem en t • DE CEM BER 5−11, 2012
2. DRINKING: When I crave a bloody mary I always go to Matt’s in The Market. This second-story restaurant and bar right across from the throngs of tourists at Pike Place Market epitomizes Pacific Northwest cuisine and sensibilities. Their bloody mary pays homage to the region’s Scandinavian heritage by subbing Aquavit for vodka.

AJ Power Paintings Recently, we fell hard and fast for AJ Power’s paintings on exhibit at Lighthouse Roasters in Fremont. We love his whimsical interpretations of South African birds, flora, fauna and Big Five game animals, influenced by the artist’s stint working in West Africa with the Peace Corps. PIKE PLACE MARKET There are few one-stop shopping destinations in Seattle that bring me such complete and total joy as Pike Place Market. It sustains my home-chef habits with local foo stuffs, provides the perfect backdrop to showcase Seattle for first-time visitors, and is my favorite stop to sip and nosh. I’ve also been turned on to more than a few local artisans selling their handcrafted, made-with-oodles-oflove wares here. My advice: Plan a day at Pike Place Market on your holiday retail itinerary. Stock up on all your edible entertaining needs, snag some one-of-a-kind gifts and treat yourself to lunch or happy hour while you’re there. Just be sure to stop and sniff the flowers at the many festive stalls along the way.

Chi-Chi 12-Strand Necklace In 2008, James Minola and Chelsea Green began to design and produce a line of in-house products called Grain. Created as sustainably as possible in the Pacific Northwest or in collaboration with artisan communities in Guatemala, their best-selling item to date has been a recyclable shower curtain that does not off-gas. Although we think this is really cool, we’re guessing that most people don’t put shower curtains on their holiday wish list. Instead, we recommend Grain’s Chi-Chi necklace named after the famous Chichicastenango Market, known by many as the most colorful market in North America. Grain 206-965-9302, graindesign.com $152

PIONEER SQUARE This vibrant neighborhood in the southwest corner of downtown is truly the historic heart of Seattle. Its main plaza and many surrounding blocks boast beautifully restored buildings designed in the Second Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts Classical, and Richardsonian-Romanesque styles and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among its many bars, restaurants, small shops and edgy grit, shoppers can find worldclass art galleries and a taste of local culture. For sports enthusiasts, this neighborhood is a convenient (and scenic) walk from Safeco and Qwest Fields. The holiday season is always a mighty fine time to soak up all that this very walkable neighborhood has to offer. BITES & BOOZE Giftin' La Vita Dolce by Charyn Pfeuffer
I’m gonna cut straight to the chase here. Seattle is a pretty kick-ass bites-and-booze town. And no, we don’t need a season of Top Chef filmed here to say it’s so (although it does make me warm and fuzzy every time Seattle makes it to the national media stage). I lived in Seattle for a stint nearly a decade ago (I’ll save the relationship-gone-bad saga for another time), then headed back to California, before deciding the Pacific Northwest was the place for me to be. This city’s understated (and often underappreciated) food cred is one of the main reasons why I love this place so much.
Operation: Make Spencer Move started early one Saturday morning in Capitol Hill, where I plied him with Marination Mobile’s Kalbi Beef and Spicy Pork Tacos. No one, and I mean no one, has the willpower to say no to the Nunya Sauce. Next up, I made a major miscalculation of Off the Rez’s route and schedule; so instead, we headed to Molly Moon’s for some pre-noon scoops. Salted licorice ice cream and a quick walk around Cal Anderson Park helped solidify our next stop: Where Ya At Matt. We loaded up on Po’ Boys at the N’awlins-inspired food truck and headed to Fremont Peak Park for an impromptu picnic and views of Ballard’s boats, marinas and waterways. I had officially played the maritime card. From there, we put our name on the waiting list at Ray’s Cafe for a prized patio seat on the unusually sunny afternoon before braving the lines across the street at Paseo for an almighty Cuban Roast Pork Sandwich. Just as the sandwich was secured, my cell phone rang and our table was ready, so I stashed the greasy mess in my purse for later consumption. I waxed poetic on all the fab virtues of Seattle over oysters, margaritas and smoked salmon skewers until we were stuffed and ready for our next stop: Hilliard’s Beer. If you want to motivate the male gender to do anything, I’ve learned that waving beer like a carrot works wonders. I’m not saying Spencer is in any way like a rabbit, but he did seem to enjoy sipping his way through the tasting-room selections. Oh, and having his photo taken with the brewery’s beer vending machine was a definite highlight. Hello, who wouldn’t like beer on demand? All in all, my day of full-court culinary press was a success. And guess what? Spencer signed a lease and made the move to Seattle a few weeks ago. I know his professional career may have played some part in this decision, but I’d like to think the promise of tasty food trucks, cheap happy hours and incomparable seafood left an indelible impression on his mind. I only hope his constitutionals are prepared for what’s to come. When it comes to bites and booze in our fair city, what are your favorites? I’ve shared many of my favorite consumable favorites in this holiday gift guide, but please feel free to send me a tweet at @charynpfeuffer along with the hashtag #seattleweekly. Oh, and if you feel like turning a Seattle newcomer onto something new and delicious, you can always add Spencer to the social media mix via @spencerspellman. Thank you in advance for your culinary kindness, and here’s to a tasty holiday season.

So when my dear food, life, and travel-loving friend, Spencer Spellman of The Traveling Philosopher (thetravelingphilosopher.com), confessed he was contemplating a move to Seattle, I pulled out all the show, tell and taste stops. You see, I’ve had chef friends schedule layovers in Emerald City so I could work my marathon-eating tour de force magic on them. Usually, it just takes a dozen oysters and bottle of bubbly to have them fall to their knees. The idea of having a whole day to woo a potential Pacific Northwesterner tickled me.

Huckleberry Cordial
Making whiskey is a fairly simple process, and this DIY kit makes it really easy to distill your favorite brown liquor at home. The kit comes with everything you need to craft two 750ml bottles of 110 proof White Dog un-aged whiskey, including a two-liter aging barrel, pouring funnel, two tasting glasses and step-by-step instructions. Because of the small barrel size, the aging process is significantly accelerated making nicely aged whiskey available in 3-6 months (you be the judge!). Since we’re all about recycling, the aging barrel can be refilled and reused multiple times. Woodinville Whiskey Co. 16110 Woodinville Redmond Rd. AHOY!
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all across the land, there was plenty of celebrating with Diamond Knot beer in hand. The growlers were all stuffed under the tree with fine care, in hopes that the morning would soon be ‘nere.
We reserved a small amount of our 2011 Wee Heavy winter ale for this special bottling. Aged in oak bourbon barrels for 6 months, the beer has flavors that bring to mind currants, caramel, and of course, bourbon. Enjoy!

“When I think of Winter/Christmas/Holiday beers, I usually think of beers that are either a little higher in alcohol to settle in and keep warm with or that maybe have some kind of warming spice component to them. Belgian ales easily fit those characteristics. Some of my favorites are: Het Anker Gouden Carolus Noel ($11.99, 750ml). Big, rich and rummy malt body with a strong spicy anise flavor. Rich and warming, a Bottleworks favorite.” — Shaughn O’Keefe, manager at Bottleworks in Wallingford Bottleworks 1710 N 45th St., 206-633-BIER bottleworksbeerstore.blogspot.com prices vary

We’re getting down to the wire and I know some of you (okay, many of you, including pretty much every male in my life) still have some shopping to do. If you haven’t started to tackle your “to shop” holiday list, that’s perfectly okay: there’s still time. I’m not here to scold you, but instead to extend an inspirational retail life jacket. Here are some 11th-hour picks that tend to be of the little-black-dress, make-every-gift-recipient-happy variety. If you still find yourself stumped, here are a few quick guidelines to consider: When in doubt, give booze; women will never say no to chocolate; and you can never go wrong with spa services. May your patience be unwavering and the shopping forces be with you as we near the final stretch of the 2012 holiday season. Eat, drink, be merry, but above all else, soak up the company of those around you.
