espite the removal of more than 35,000 tons of toxic soil in 2010, the City of Bothell still has some time before the Department of Ecology (DOE) deems five parcels of land in downtown Bothell as having reached proper cleanup levels. Nduta Mbuthia, a project engineer with the city, said before the city can conduct a

year’s worth of groundwater monitoring (under DOE’s oversight) to determine if contamination has been resolved, the city needs to complete additional cleanup under State Route 522, which is near two of the sites. “The sites are currently a construction zone, as the city is conducting cleanup work under the Bothell Crossroads project,” Mbuthia said in an email, “which means that with all the equipment currently running around on the

site, we have to wait until the area is vacated.” Mbuthia said SR 522 will be vacated this fall and that officials have been removing small pockets of contaminated soil during the roadway project, which will shift SR 522 onto four of the parcels of land. These include the Bothell Riverside, Bothell Landing, former Hertz property and former Bothell Paint and Decorating sites, located just south of the current SR 522 [ more BOTHELL page 2 ]

Signs on the shore of Log Boom Park last summer notified residents of dioxins testing in the waters of Lake Washington near the park. The results of those tests are expected to be made public this month, according to Kenmore city officials. It is not the first time the waters have been tested for

dangerous chemicals. In 1996 testing was conducted in relation to proposed dredging of the Kenmore Navigation Channel. Dioxins were found at Harbour Village Marina in 2011 as a part of a dredging application. But regardless of the results of the current tests, the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) reminds residents that dioxins adhere to

A long run gets the blood pumping. Then, if that isn’t enough, strip down to a bathing suit in 40 degree temperatures. Finally, take a shorter run right into the frigid waters of Lake Washington and try to grab a duck. That was the fun for about 25 people who participated in the 15th annual Dash to Splash event at Bastyr University on Monday. “It was not bad at all,” said Bastyr science professor Steven Rude. “It is not cold once you get out. The energy of everyone here makes it easier. But once is enough.” Rude, who has done a Polar Bear Dash before, is in his first year at the college and said that it was a good way to immerse

sediment particles and do not affect the water column. The DOE issued a Notice of Violation for sediment disturbance to Kiewit/General/Manson (KGM) tugboats on Dec. 28. The notice is the state’s first acknowledgement that the contractor building anchors for the new 520 bridge is stirring up

Big changes to downtown Bothell, annexation and an economic recovery were three of the biggest topics Wednesday (Jan. 9), as Bothell City Manager Bob Stowe gave his annual State of the City address. More than 100 people packed the Bothell Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Courtyard Hall in Country Village for the speech. “You don’t have to look far into Bothell’s history to find examples of tenacity and ambition, traits that make Bothell both special and successful,” Stowe said. tion between SR 522, SR 527 and Main Street may also require cleanup. But cleanup wouldn’t begin until the new SR 522 road is completed, therefore “the traffic impacts would be much less,” said Mbuthia. In August 2010, as a part of Bothell’s Downtown Revitalization Plan, city officials (under DOE oversight) removed 12,000 tons of contaminated soil at the Northshore School District’s former bus barn, 6,000 tons of contaminated soil at the Bothell Paint and

Decorating site, 12,500 tons of contaminated soil at the former Hertz site (also known as the AA Rentals location), 3,600 tons of contaminated soil at the Bothell Landing site and 1,000 tons of contaminated soil at the Bothell Riverside site. The total weight is equivalent to about 2,700 school buses. After the soil was removed from all sites, it was trucked off to a Title D disposal facility and the excavations refilled with clean dirt imported from a quarry.

Workers plan to pump out contaminated groundwater at the Bothell Riverside site this year because its groundwater was also found to have chlorinated solvents running through it. A public comment period will be available in either February or March. Before the city purchased the four pieces of land for the Bothell Crossroads project, investigators discovered the

former Hertz site was once owned by a petroleum company in the 1930s and underground storage tanks (USTs) had been removed from the property in 1993. An Ecology fact sheet states that in 2008 the city complied with environmental site assessments, and as a result, petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in soil and ground water. [ more SITES page 3 ]

www.bothell-reporter.com • www.kenmore-reporter.com [ sites from page 2] Vinyl chloride and arsenic were found to exceed Washington state cleanup levels and can be dangerous for those who experience toxicity. Tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene were also found at the Hertz site but were below cleanup levels. But some chemicals from dry cleaner solvents - liquid used to dissolve substances - were detected, which “may have migrated in groundwater and affected several downhill or down-gradient properties,” according to Mbuthia. The solvents may have been from local dry cleaner businesses from the 1950s. Petroleum contamination was found at all five sites, including the Northshore School District property. The Northshore School District’s property housed their transportation facility and bus maintenance shop and, according to the city’s website, contamination was caused from leaking hydraulic hoists in the maintenance shop and from abandoned fuel tanks. Various heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic, were also found at the Northshore School District property. However, up until the Northshore School District sold

the property to the city in 2010, they managed their site independently with DOE’s Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP). The site must still reach standards under the state’s 1989 Model Toxics Control Act, said Ecology spokesman Larry Altose. The city has recently re-enrolled this site into the VCP. Funding this environmental cleanup has and continues to be very expensive for the city. “We still need more money for future cleanup work,” Mbuthia said. The Environmental Protection Agency granted the Bothell Landing site $200,000 in 2009 for petroleum cleanup and DOE provided $3.52 million for investigative and cleanup work with the city providing a 50 percent match. And although there is still $2.5 million left to be used, the city still needs $9.6 million over the next seven years for the Crossroads sites and former dry cleaner sites. “That number ($9.6 million) covers the remaining soil removal (petroleum), future cleanup of solvent-impacted areas (more expensive than petroleum cleanup) and all the groundwater investigation and the multiple quarters of groundwater monitoring that will happen after that,” Mbuthia said. Funding will come from

various resources from the city’s capital improvement fund along with awarded grants. According to City of Bothell documents, the total estimated cost of the cleanup project will reach $14.5 million, of which $4.2 million has been spent to date. As the city continues to move toward a clean and healthy downtown area, Mbuthia acknowledges “there are potentially other contaminated private properties in Bothell.” “In the city’s case, investigations of these pieces of land were triggered by a real estate transaction,” said Mbuthia of the city-owned parcels. “In the downtown area, city officials in collaboration with Ecology, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), King County Brownfields Program/ECOSS and various entities have done a lot of investigative work to understand the contamination, and continue to do so.” According to a 2008 report on tax parcel history through 1972, there are 18 other parcels of land in Bothell that may be contaminated. This includes the gas station site that is north of the property where McMenamins will be constructed in July 2013. Life of a Running-Starter

H

igh school is a difficult and chaotic period, and it only gets worse as junior and senior year commences. Sports, clubs, other extracurricular activities, AP/honors class, SATs, and college applications are just a few of the things that juniors and seniors these days have to juggle. Imagine adding college classes to the list. Is that even possible for high schoolers to do with Washington state’s Running Start Program? For those who are still hazy about what Running Start is, it’s a program that allows high school juniors and seniors to take classes at a community college to satisfy their high school credits for graduation. Running Start allows students to immerse themselves in college level courses (regardless of the “community college” label) and best of all, it’s free! We’re talking about free college here and almost all credits are transferrable to four-year institutions in state and even some out-of-state. Especially now, parents and students alike are trying their best to pay for college as tuition costs are skyrocketing. If Running Start is a financially affordable way of receiving a post-secondary education, why doesn’t everyone do it? There are a variety of factors that play a role in whether or not a student choses to partake in Running Start or not, and the greatest reason seems to be this: most students love high school too much to leave it. In the wise words of Bothell High School senior Allie Sanchez, “I want the full high school experience.” Other students claim that AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) will prove to be more beneficial to them as colleges nationwide accept those credits. However, community college credits say just as much as AP/IB credits do: “I go above and beyond to challenge myself.”

For me personally, the freedom of having a flexible schedule appealed to me, as I have a part-time job and other various extracurricular activities in the afternoon/evenings. After about 10 years of traditional six-hour school days, I wanted something different and Running Start provided for me that different aspect of schooling. Also, because a whole year’s worth of curriculum is packed into one 11-week quarter, college classes move at a quicker pace and require more hours dedicated to the class each week. I enjoy the rigor of the classes and I believe that those classes allow me to dip my feet into college life before I even officially start college. Many of my peers are aware that I wish to attend college out-of-state and they ask me why I decided to do Running Start. I am fully aware that almost all of the institutions that I’ve applied to will not take my community college credits, but I didn’t do Running Start to receive an Associate’s

Degree before I graduate high school or reduce the number of years I will attend college. I very much intend to attend college for four years. As of now, I’m simply enjoying the quasi-college life, finishing up the last of my high school requirements and most importantly, taking classes that I am interested in majoring in at no cost to me. I recommend all students to take advantage of the Running Start Program. Community colleges provide a wide variety of resources to its students, and although taking classes with “old people” may seem nerve-wracking at first, the learning goes both ways; you learn some, they learn some. College is an inevitable step in life for many students, so why not take that running start to ready yourself for what’s yet to come?

Don’t invent ways to block adoption Today I read the three letters in the Jan. 4 issue concerning a prior letter that proposed that gay people who want to adopt a child should be required to be tested for AIDS/HIV. I agree with the writers who pointed out how very unfair this type of discrimination is. I am a mother of a son and daughter who are adopted. Before this adoption could take place the following was required: I was finger printed, background checked, finance checked, three letters of recommendation were written by friends and several sessions held with a social worker. The adoption process in Washington is very rigorous and thorough, as it should be. It does not discriminate on the basis of marital status, race, religion or sexual

identity, nor should it. When prospective parents are denied the right to adopt they are not the only victims. The number of orphans far exceeds the number of adoptive parents. An orphan child who never has a “forever home” is often a person with a very bleak future. A “forever home” with a daddy, a mommy, two dads, two moms or a mom and a dad can transform a life. Orphanages and foster care often fail to help children thrive. People who truly care about the welfare of orphans do not try to invent ways to block adoption. Our state has many adoptable children in foster care. In the world there are over a million orphans. Help these children find a “forever home” and a family to love them. Encourage more adoptions. Help make this world a better place.

Congratulations to Suzan DelBene Congratulations to Congresswoman Suzan DelBene. There is no doubt that she was the better candidate. I hope that she is able to work well with the other 11 members of Washington State’s congressional delegation. We have many pressing issues that need to be addressed with thoughtful consideration. I hope that she is able to bridge the gap between the parties and not be just another Democrat block vote. I count on her to be able to explain her positions on the issues and defend her vote. Right now, the divide is extreme. Dave Reichert, representative from the 8th District, will not accept my letters or emails – even though he is a member of our state’s congressional representation. Such a shame – and such disgraceful behavior for a

public servant. I pray that Congresswoman DelBene will not fall into such a trap and turn her back on her constituents, regardless of their political affiliation.

Stop horse slaughtering When you see someone taking their young, healthy horse to an auction, do you think they know where it is going? Probably not. There is a good chance that the horse will go to a slaughterhouse. Does that horse really deserve that fate? When slaughterhouse employees buy horses at an auction, the majority of the horses are young and healthy horses because their meat sells for more money than the meat of old or sick horses. They are then transported long distances in crowded trailers with little to no food and water.

Though the plants in the US have been shut down, live horses are being shipped across the borders, especially to Mexico, to be killed somewhere else. Pictures from the SPCA have showed the awful things that happen to the horses in these slaughterhouses. They are killed inhumanely, going through severe pain and suffering. Why do we have so many horses that need to be gotten rid of? Because we over-breed our horses. One in every five racehorses born will be a winner. The other four will most likely end up in a slaughterhouse. We need to learn to be responsible about breeding horses. When a horse was born, him being bred was an act of the owner agreeing to take responsibility for a living creature.

ect in the city’s history. The relocation of SR 522, or the Crossroads project, will add two blocks to the downtown business district and straighten out the busiest roadway in the city. The project is fully funded and costs $54.8 million. It is projected to be completed in the summer of 2014. “We are now in our third year of downtown construction and watching that vision come to life,” Stowe said. The project is part of a downtown revitalization, which began in 2005. Along with the Crossroads project, the city has an agreement with the McMenamins brothers to build a 70 room hotel, restaurant, brewpub, movie theater and live music venue. “A unique element of the agreement with McMenamins provides free use of the former Northshore Pool for Bothell citizens for a period of 15 years,” Stowe said. Act,” Stowe said. “As such, Bothell is ready to consider any citizen-initiated petition for an annexation area that is self-supporting with local tax dollars, whether it comes tomorrow or 10 years from now.” Bothell is struggling with low revenues like many other cities in the state. The General Fund, for city services, is $78.2 million. The city set aside reserves, which totaled $7.3 million or 20 percent of the General Fund operating reserve, in 2007. “This reserve has served the city well during the past six years,” said Stowe. “Our once healthy General Fund reserve … has been reduced to 9 percent.” Stowe said the city has to rebuild those reserves to 15 percent by the end of 2016. But some tough decisions had to be made with revenues down. “Throughout the Great Recession and the economic meltdown that followed, Bothell’s commitment to providing nimble fiscal management remained strong,” Stowe said. “The city consistently reacted wisely and timely to shifting revenue forecasts and implemented course corrections as needed.” The biggest decision for the upcoming budget came on property taxes. For the first time since 2005 the city will raise its property taxes by 1 percent. It equates to an additional $5.60 in 2013 for a homeowner whose home is assessed at $300,000.

The investment will leverage $650 million in private investment. The development is also designed to help with city revenue to fund services. “Many of the projects not only address an important community need, they are also designed to provide a return on investment by stimulating private sector growth, specifically in the downtown area, that generates both one time and ongoing revenue sources for the community,” said Stowe. Along with infrastructure improvements, the city is also proceeding to implement nine proposed King County annexations, despite a ballot measure that failed last year in neighborhoods to the north. The city will annex those areas - a total of 1,003 acres south of the city - via an interlocal agreement later this year. Under state law, this method - which does not involve an election - is intended to be utilized for potential annexation areas that other entities could not logically provide city services for. City of Kenmore qualifies for two-year audit cycle The City of Kenmore has received notice from the Washington State Auditor’s Office that it is eligible for a two-year audit cycle based on the audit history and city revenues. The city has achieved 11 consecutive years with zero audit findings. The Auditor’s Office is scheduled to perform an audit of the City’s 2011 and 2012 financials in 2013. “That we are able to

sediment. If tests reveal that the sediment is contaminated there could be adverse effects for those who recreate on Kenmore’s shoreline. The notice gives KGM the opportunity to correct the violation and “prevent future sediment disturbances.” It acknowledges that the company is in violation of water pollution control laws. “This particular case is unusual because the water movement stems from vessel operations,” said DOE spokesman Larry Altose. Turbidity can be natural, such as when storms cause larger waves, currents or stream flows. State water quality standards take background turbidity into account. It is uncommon for tugboats’ or barges’ turbidity to cause environmental issues, said Altose. KGM is using a portion of Kenmore Yard, at 6423 N.E. 175th St., as a supplemental construction site for preparation and maintenance, component construction and barge transportation to the 520 bridge. “Kiewit/General/Manson, a joint venture is dedicated to maintaining the highest environmental compliance standards,” said Kiewit spokesman Tom Janssen in an email to the Reporter. “In Kenmore, to minimize the disturbance of sediment, we operate in designated areas and use the shallowest-draft tug available that can safely maneuver the barge/vessel being towed/pushed.” KGM is now required to file a report within 30 days telling the DOE what steps they have done and will take to control such waste or pollution. The DOE will

www.bothell-reporter.com • www.kenmore-reporter.com move to a two-year cycle demonstrates the city’s commitment to accountability,” said Mindy Chambers of the Washington State Auditor’s Office. “The Auditor’s Office initiated the two-year cycle because we have more than a decade of clean audits and our excellent internal controls,” said Mayor David Baker. “This is a compliment to the city’s commitment to holding a high standard of fiscal accountability and integrity.” Audit procedures are performed to determine whether the city complied with state laws and regulations and its own policies and procedures. Past audits have focused on accountability for public resources and compliance then inform KGM of the next steps. “We are carefully reviewing the recent notification from the Department of Ecology and examining our operations in Kenmore,” said Janssen. “We will respond to the Department of Ecology as they have directed.” If the DOE has to take further action it could result in a maximum of a $10,000 fine for each confirmed violation. “But in this case we first must review KGM’s response,” said Altose. “Steps after that can range from no action needed to a range of possible actions, including an informal directive, an order or a penalty.” The notice also states that the DOE has documented two occasions when KGM tugboats have caused visible sediment disturbances in the Kenmore Navigation Channel. “On March 21, 2012, the Manson tugboat Nancy M., while moving a barge strayed outside the navigation channel, caused visible sediment disturbance in front of Kenmore Air and Northlake Marina,” the notice states. “In August of 2012 the Manson tugboat Harry M., while moving a barge towards the entrance of the channel, caused visible sediment disturbance.” It continues, outlining a third possible disturbance of sediment in November near Kenmore Air. Prior to the start of the 520 bridge project, an Environmental Impact Study projected that KGM’s work will result in an average of approximately one barge trip per day and that the use of Kenmore Yard site would not result in significant ef-

with laws and regulations; financial statements; and federal compliance. Unqualified opinions have been issued on the financial statements which means they are presented fairly, in all material respects. DelBene was recently selected to represent the newly drawn 1st District, which includes Bothell and Kenmore. The committee tackles a wide variety of issues ranging from agricultural research and development, rural economic development, crop insurance, food safety, international trade and commodities regulation. “Ensuring the strength of our agricultural sector is a critical part of having a vibrant local economy in the 1st Congressional District. From dairy and berry farms, plentiful vegetable crops, wineries, livestock and many other diverse food products, agriculture accounts for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic activity in our region,” said DelBene. “I’m honored to serve on the

House Agriculture Committee. I will fight to make sure that northwest farmers have a strong voice in the nation’s capitol as we draft smart policies to help our agricultural industry thrive.” DelBene’s appointment to the Agriculture Committee follows her appointment to the House Judiciary Committee last month. Prior to being elected to Congress, DelBene served as head of the Washington State Department of Revenue, where she oversaw more than 1,000 employees. Previously, DelBene pursued a successful career in business, working as an executive at Microsoft, and in biotech, technology and microfinance.

videos of the barges moving through the channel on YouTube through an account named “crazyhazedaze.” “Since they (KGM) have been having issues with the turbidity now they have started doing the barging at night,” said Hays during the Dec. 13 KAN meeting. “… You’ll see a light at midnight shining in your bedroom window, so you’ll get up and it is a tug trying to find its way in.” But Janssen said the company has not changed any of its scheduling. “Kiewit/General/Manson’s navigation schedule within the Kenmore Channel has not been altered. We are operating in accordance with Coast Guard rules and regulations,” said Janssen. “As with other businesses in the channel, work occurs both day and night to achieve our project schedule. Because the winter months have fewer daylight hours, we operate additional hours in darkness. However, the majority of our vessel movements occur during daylight hours.” The issues with the turbidity predate the 520 project. Hays has 59 videos on YouTube, with 10 of them being posted since the 520 bridge construction began. Some of the oldest videos date back as far as four years ago. The bridge construction is expected to continue in Kenmore through 2014. Hays points out that there has been no water testing results from the turbidity but that tests were taken in still water. But the issue with the turbidity is not just with the tugboats and barges coming through the channel. The sediment disturbance

also has to do with illegal maneuvers, such as turning around in the channel, she said. The Kenmore Action Network, a citizen watchdog group, hired environmental scientist and consultant Greg Wingard to aid in their investigation of the contamination. Wingard, along with other KAN officials, plan to meet with the DOE to discuss the test results on Jan. 22. The KAN meeting, originally scheduled for Jan. 16, was moved to 7 p.m., Jan. 24 at Kenmore City Hall so KAN officials can inform Kenmore residents of the results of the tests and the meeting with the DOE. The public is invited to attend the KAN meeting. Kenmore Mayor David Baker told KAN members during its December meeting that the state’s $1 billion shortfall and resulting budget cuts could severely impact cleanup efforts in the area. “If something is found it is going to have to be cleaned up,” said Baker. “The state Legislature is looking at robbing the State Model Toxics Control Act fund, which would directly affect any cleanup here.” The U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s Seattle District Dredged Materials Management Office implements the interagency Dredged Material Management Program in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Washington state departments of Ecology and Natural Resources. These four agencies collaboratively work to manage and regulate disposal of dredged material from dredging projects in Washington state.

ost people take for granted that they can leave their home any time they please. But for one Bothell girl the chance to get out and go to church or dinner is a luxury that a local charity has given back to her. Tahlia Boyd, who was featured in the Dec. 21 issue of the Bothell/Kenmore Reporter, and her family have received the use of a wheelchair van from Bellevue-based Bridge Disability Ministries on Saturday. “Our first outing on Saturday evening was to go get a treat at a local restaurant,” said Eric Boyd, whose daughter is recovering from a brain tumor and is paralyzed. “We were then able to attend Refuge Church (on Sunday) as a family, which offered a chance to surprise some people there, since most everyone was not aware that Tahlia was coming.” Bridge Disability Ministries is a Christian-based organization that helps families gain access to durable medical goods in a time of need. “From my perspective I was called on to deliver a miracle,” said Bridge Disability Ministries Executive Director Jack Staudt. “And

Bothell resident Tahlia Boyd enjoys the mobility of a van that Bridge Disability has loaned her family. COURTESY OF THE BOYD FAMILY we were blessed by the opportunity to visit with this lovely family and little Tahlia.” Tahlia’s visit to the church was uplifting for all involved as the church community held a fund raiser in December to help the Boyd family remodel their basement for Tahlia’s homecoming. The idea of the fund raiser was also to get the 7-year-old girl home by Christmas. And although

she was not discharged from Seattle’s Children’s Hospital until Dec. 26, the family still celebrated Christmas together at home a day late. But the use of the van, which is loaned to the family part-time for doctor appointments and outings, has been the biggest help. “It gives us great joy at Bridge to help out a family in need as we have been able to do for Tahlia and her family,” said Bridge Dis-

Ostroms’ Drug & Gift in Kenmore. “I’ve had a great ride … and I plan to keep on riding,” said Ramsey. He is still going strong long past the age when most retire, reporting to work daily at Ostroms’ busy pharmacy operation. Oestroms’ management is planning a celebration to commemorate his birthday on Jan. 31. Customers and well-wishers are encouraged to stop in for birthday cake and refreshments. Ramsey gives a quick and emphatic answer when asked why he continues at Ostroms, joking his wife doesn’t want him around the house. “The people, I love people. We have a great, caring group of longtime customers including children and grandchildren of our customers from the 1960s,” said Ramsey.

“And a wonderful team of co-workers who care about our business and our customers just as passionately as I do.” Ramsey has seen a lot of change in pharmacy during 55 years in the profession. “We expected our pharmacists to oversee virtually all aspects of the store’s operation,” said Ramsey of when he began in pharmacy. Now, with the increase in the types of conditions that can be treated with pharmaceuticals, Ramsey said that pharmacists mostly spend their time working with doctors, making sure prescriptions are filled accurately, and

helping patients understand their medicines. Communicating with patients is Ramsey’s favorite part of the job. “I have always loved helping people, and by continuing to work, I get that opportunity on a daily basis,” he said. Perhaps the biggest change was the 2009 relocation of Ostroms from Kenmore Village to the current location on Bothell Way. Ramsey admits to being concerned about the move. “I grew up in a different era of this business,” he said. “Pharmacies were located in shopping centers as an afterthought to the grocery store anchor tenant.” However, after four years in the new location, Ramsey sees the benefits. “Our new store is more visible, more accessible, and is comprehensively planned with an eye to filling prescriptions quickly and accurately and giving customers easy access to the pharmacy,” he said. He further notes the addition of a dedicated private counseling area as a boon to communicating

with patients: “something we just didn’t think of in 1963.” Ramsey has given a lot to the Kenmore community. During the past half century he has served on the Northshore School Board for 14 years, is a 48-year member of Northshore Kiwanis and spent several years on the now-defunct Metro Transit Council. For many years Ramsey was one of Kenmore’s premier athletic boosters, sponsoring countless Little League teams and high school athletic programs. In 2004, Ramsey was recognized by the Kenmore Heritage Society with its highest honor as the third annual recipient of the McMaster Heritage Award. Although Todd Ramsey purchased the business from his father about 15 years ago, Ramsey still comes to work – but now, on his own schedule. “When I want to play golf, I can just leave,” said Ramsey, noting that he knows the store will run smoothly. Ostroms will offer 20 percent off all purchases on Jan. 31, excluding prescriptions.

...healthy living conditions (osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons), and post-rehab patients recovering from trauma, surgery and repetitive strain injuries. 6. Functional fitness: Pilates addresses the three components of functional fitness: balance, coordination and endurance. Using spring resistance and body weight to perform functional activities (pushing, pulling, squatting, climbing) Pilates exercises are performed in a variety of functional positions (standing, sitting, kneeling and single leg balance). 7. Core training: Core training stresses strength and conditioning of the

stabilizing muscles of the abdomen, thorax and back. Performed on a mat, small equipment, and springbased apparatus, the Pilates method works dynamically from “the inside out.” Pilates exercises initiate all movement from the “powerhouse” (core, abdominals and glutes) while performing fluid and strong wholebody movements.

Bothell woman dies from flu A Bothell woman is among three Snohomish County residents who have died from the flu, according to the Snohomish County Health District. The Bothell woman was in her 40s, while both the Everett and Edmonds women were in their 80s.

All three died at local hospitals in late December. All three had underlying medical conditions that contributed to complications. “We may be facing the most severe flu season since 2009,” said Dr. Gary Goldbaum. “I urge everyone over 6 months of age to get an annual flu shot. It’s still the best weapon we have to fight the flu strains that are

circulating this year. Wash your hands often, stay home if you are sick, and cover your cough.” The CDC estimates that up to 49,000 people could die from the flu this season. The Snohomish County Health District said it is well supplied with flu vaccine in providers’ offices as well as community clinics, pharmacies and clinics.

Bothell police catch men suspected of beating, robbing at motel BY MATT PHELPS mphelps@bothell-reporter.com

Three males suspected of beating a man in a Bothell hotel room, along with a fourth man and a woman, were all arrested in Lynnwood Jan. 9. Lynnwood police found the car reported stolen from the Bothell Holiday Inn Ex-

press earlier in the day during a routine license-plate check, said Bothell police Sgt. Cedric Collins. The man and woman in the car were questioned about the stolen vehicle. “During questioning they found out two of the suspects were in the apartment where the car came from,” said Collins.

Upon contact at the apartment, police found the two male suspects and eventually realized the third male suspect was in the apartment as well. The male and female driving the stolen car were arrested on non-related charges. Bothell police received a report of a robbery at the Bothell hotel at 5:20 a.m.

The first gun buyback will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 in downtown Seattle in the parking lot underneath Interstate 5 between Cherry and James Streets. The Seattle Police Department will also be distributing trigger locks for those who wish to secure their firearms safely. These will be available at each of the five precincts during normal business

hours. Modeled on successful gun buyback programs across the country, the Seattle and King County gun buyback program will consist of an anonymous process in which individuals can turn in their unwanted weapons. Law enforcement officials will not be taking pictures of participants, nor will they be logging license plate numbers or running ballistic tests on the guns that are turned in. In exchange for dropping off a weapon, individuals will receive a gift card valued at up to $100.00 for hand guns, shotguns, and rifles, and up to $200 for assault weapons (as classified in the State of Washington). “The Sheriff ’s Office remains committed to providing a safe place for citizens to turn in guns they

on the morning of Jan. 9. When police arrived at the third-floor hotel room they found one man tied up and a second man severely beaten with either a baseball bat or hand gun. The injured man was transported to Evergreen Hospital with non-life-threateninginjuries. “One of the victims stated no longer want. It is a much better choice to remove an unwanted gun from your home than to leave it where it can be stolen and used in a crime,” said King County Sheriff John Urquhart. In partnership with the Seattle Police Department, other law enforcement agencies in King County, community and faith based organizations, the gun buyback effort will set up locations throughout Seattle and King County where individuals can turn in firearms anonymously, with no questions asked. Former Seattle mayors Greg Nickels, Norm Rice, Charles Royer and Wes Uhlman are serving as co-chairs of the program and current Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, Constantine, Seattle Police Deputy Chief Nick Metz, Dr. David Fleming of Public Health – Seattle and King County, Renee Hopkins of the Seattle Police Foundation and Reverend Aaron Williams of Seattle’s Mount Zion Baptist Church, announced their participation and endorsement for the program. The Seattle Police Foundation has committed $25,000 to the Gun Safety Initiative, and will serve as the program coordinator. The last time the Seattle Police Department held a gun buyback program was in 1992. Corporate sponsors include Amazon, which has committed $30,000 in gift cards that will serve as a monetary incentive for those turning in a gun. PEMCO

whether she left with the suspects or before they got there.” Collins said that police served a search warrant for the apartment in an attempt to get more information. “All of the people involved in the robbery are in custody or have been contacted,” said Collins.

Two 21 year olds, whose last known address was in Bothell, are being sought by the Island County Sheriff for an alleged attack on a 29-year-old Camano Island woman. Naji Roshad Moore-Taylor and Megan Noelle Failing brutally assaulted and shot the woman in her home at approximately 8 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 10. The victim is in stable condition and being treated at an area hospital for her injuries which are not life threatening. Anyone who has information on their location is asked to call police as the two individuals maybe dangerous. “The potential is yes,” said Island County Sheriff Mark

C. Brown. “They are armed.” The suspects were last seen leaving the area in a dark, possibly black, smaller car. “We know that they knew each other,” said Brown, who noted that it was not a random act. “We are looking for anyone who may have information regarding the whereabouts of Moore-Taylor and Failing,” said Island County Sheriff Det. Ed Wallace. Moore-Taylor is a black male, 6-feet-tall and 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Failing is a white female, 5-foot-6 and 112 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
