Outpouring of emotions for family injured on Highway 2

This past calendar year has been filled with shocking news in the Northshore area, from the admission of the Bothell Mayor of having an affair to the City of Kenmore’s consideration of putting tolls on the Sammamish River Bridge.

Here are just a few of the big stories that surrounded the Northshore area in 2012 that the Bothell/Kenmore Reporter covered.

The Bothell skate park closed to make room for the new McMenamin Hotel. The deal to build the new hotel officially closed in August. The new hotel will open in March of next year.

Stories about car accidents, criminal investigations and UFOs are among the mostread headlines this year - but not all of the Bothell/Kenmore Reporter’s articles touched on gloom and doom.

The community’s efforts to help a little girl come home for Christmas, sprinkled with new business ventures and celebratory events often graced the front page of this weekly newspaper’s print edition, and website.

Both Timothy and Cheryl were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jeremy had a message for his parents: “I am going to take care of my sisters. Dad and Mom, I am going to make it. I’m gonna make it for you only. I love you so much.”

The couple’s three adult children and son-in-law, who were pedestrians in the vehicle, were all injured.

The Owen’s children, Jamie Owen Mayer, 24, and Jessica Janine Owen, 27, along with their son-in-law Steven T. Mayer, 24, are still at Harborview Medical Center with various injuries.

Jeremy Owen was the only family member to be released from medical care.

Posters and cards for each family member were signed by those at the vigil. Many in attendance knew the Owens through their church, community sports and other community events and organizations. A jazz choir, made up of 2003 Bothell High School alumni, sang and a minister led the crowd in prayer for the family.

“The Owen family is well loved,” said family friend Suzanne Beyer. “We’ve known the Owens almost 20 years as our kids went to school together. Jessie and my daughter, Kalisa, were on the same soccer team.

Jessie was a phenomenal goalie, diving for that ball at all cost.”

But there has been some hope since the vigil Friday.

“We saw a huge answer to prayer today! Steven has made some major improvements in the past 24 hours and even got his breathing tube out today,” said friend of the family Christy Bellin Jennings on her blog at lovetheowens.wordpress. com on Monday. “Jessie

wore her Mack Strong jersey today to watch the Seahawks game from her room that looks straight down into the stadium.”

Beyer said that Jessica has spinal chord injuries.

The Owens are a multicultural family. Beyer said that the Owens adopted Jamie from Asia and Jeremy from Georgia and Cheryl called it their “rainbow family.” Jessie is the Owen’s biological daughter.

“I often think she and Tim are now adopting 20 kids from Newtown, Conn. in heaven,” said Beyer of the recent school shooting.

“These parents will always serve their family, their friends, their community.”

Cheryl was very involved in the community and worked as a manager at Amazon. Timothy, an insurance executive, served as a local coach. All the children were very involved in sports,

such as soccer, volleyball and horseback riding. Jeremy played for the Bothell High School football team.

The Owen’s daughter Jamie and Steven were married at the Yacht Club in Edmonds nearly two years ago.

“Jaime crocheted her own wedding dress,” Beyer recalled. “Steven was a doll, just perfect for Jaime as they both loved playing online games. Steven was from Canada and as story has it, he came into Cheryl and Tim’s home office and said he wanted to join the family.

Tim responded, ‘We’re not adopting any more kids.’”

Dec. 19 Fraud: Southeast 241st St. Over a period of time between Dec. 1-11, an unknown suspect made $300 in fraudulent charges on the victim’s credit cards over the Internet.

Dec. 20 Weapon: 12:07 a.m., 9100 block of N.E. 180th St. Four neighbors heard shots fired. No one was injured.

There has to be a better solution to gun violence

T

he level of discourse surrounding the recent school shooting in Newtown, Conn. has been loud and irrelevant. Many of the suggested solutions to the ever-growing problem of mass shootings were either asinine or just one sided.

Anyone who suggests that banning all guns in the United States is the answer does not understand the problem. Banning guns would take a constitutional amendment. Taking away existing guns, all 280 million, is not realistic either. People have the right to defend their homes and themselves from harm.

But contrary to what the National Riffle Association has to say, guns are part of the problem. On the same day as the Newtown shooting, a man in China walked into a school and stabbed 22 kids.

It was a horrific act and the news coverage in this country was dwarfed by the events in Newtown.

He didn’t have a gun and no one died.

Arming teachers is not a good idea either. The danger of a teacher misplacing their weapon or having it stolen is just too great. Plus, they would just become the first target.

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre suggested placing armed guards at every school. Columbine High School had two armed guards and it didn’t do any good.

Most high schools have some type of security. Many of them are armed. And while it is a way to make things incrementally safer, as long as the person knows how to use the weapon and is say, a retired police officer, it helps the issue of school shootings. But it would not have helped those in Colorado during the movie theater shooting. Placing an armed guard on every corner or expecting that a “good guy” with his own gun will be there every time, is not the answer either.

One of the biggest issues that is getting lost in the debate is mental illness. Whether it is a school in Connecticut, a mall in Oregon, a theater in Colorado or a bar in Seattle, most of the shooters

are deemed to have needed some kind of help with mental issues after the fact.

The NRA suggested a national database of people with mental issues. This is beyond ignorant of the mental health issues faced in this country.

The stigma of anyone who sees a “shrink” or is on antidepressants has to stop. Our society has to become more accepting of those with mental health issues and be able to identify and treat them. A national database would just perpetuate stereotypes and ignorance - plus it is not even feasible.

Many people with mental health issue, who end up committing these acts, were undiagnosed. That is the biggest problem.

We need to have mental health care more accessible no matter the cost. It has become a national security issue, which is the first and foremost responsibility of the government.

Identifying people who need help and then supplying the help would only subtract one of the two issues. If we identify those at highest risk for committing these acts prior to the event we can do a better job of making sure the wrong people don’t get guns.

that money. It is astounding that in the 237 years that this country has existed, gun manufacturers have not put money into making sure that a gun is tied to the person who purchased it.

Why is it that we have phones with Internet, music players that can hold 500,000 songs but we don’t have guns with fingerprint-identification locks built in? That concept would be irrelevant at this point with 280 million guns already in circulation.

Why can’t someone make trigger locks with fingerprint identification? There are fingerprint identification gun safes and there are gun locks that take a key. Most gun owners I have talked to do not like the keyed trigger locks. You have to find the key to use the gun. In the case of an intruder in the home, that extra time getting to the key could be the difference in being killed. You don’t have to search for your fingerprint.

Theoretically, if every gun owner was tied to their firearm through their fingerprint and we screened every person for mental illness who wanted to purchase a gun we should be safer. This is not a cure all. There are 280 million guns in the U.S. that would have to have these types of gun locks. They would not be cheap. You can’t feasibly make every gun owner purchase one, but it would be a start.

Resource Center.

This organization interacts with a multitude of social services groups, medical facilities, legal and police groups. These are all focused on providing helpful resources to combat this serious issue within our society – one that is often hidden and denied regarding the need. One of the key programs within this effort is the Sex Offender Management Team in King County wherein they provide: community education, community advocacy and public policy work and legislative advocacy.

The efforts of this group are designed to keep communities safe. This team began in June of 2001 and brings together the disciplines of law enforcement,

corrections, prosecution, housing providers, victim advocates and sex offender treatment specialists. Volunteers are needed throughout the organization and candidates are encouraged to call or email to see if there might be a fit.

King County grant helps Kenmore Cleaners ‘go green’ W

Fernandes and the lead researcher, Steve Whittaker, put together a plan to offer dry cleaners incentives to update their equipment, as well as manufacturer’s support with language, contracts and permitting. In exchange for receiving these funds, businesses agree to participate in future health and safety studies and take advantage of free technical assistance from the program.

To make the grants a success, Fernandes and Whittaker visit each applicant to ensure they fit the criteria and that they are getting the manufacturer’s support for operation and equipment.

The Kims learned about the project from a letter sent

by Whittaker and Fernandes to dry cleaners in both English and Korean.

“Everybody helped me,” Woochun Kim said. “My daughter helped with the English; Brad (Heilman

were no spills or leaks.”

Sung Kim is mastering the new machine. The computerized system has made cleaning filters and recycling water simple. And if there is a leak, the system automatically shuts down.

The machine has different cleaning options and leaves very little sludge that has to be specially disposed of as hazardous, waste, unlike the old system.

Sung Kim said he used to fill five-to-six 25 gallon drums per year to be disposed of as hazardous waste.

The solvents are now distilled, condensed and reused, leaving about two 25 gallon drums per year to dispose of, saving on the hazardous waste disposal. The new process also saves on the air quality permit, which is only needed for PERC machines.

“Neighbors used to complain about the smell and the noisy machine and I would be tired by 2 p.m.,” Sung Kim said, “but now it is easier, quieter.”

A newer customer stopped by and showed off a valued, vintage sweater that she has had for years, “I love the new process, said Bryan Sheridan. “It doesn’t have any odor that sometimes took a while to get out. I have been very happy with Kenmore Cleaners.”

The Kenmore City Council announced that it will consider tolling the Sammamish River Bridge and imposing a vehicle-tab tax to

pay for city-wide road repairs and the replacement of the west bridge. The city would drop the idea of the toll a few weeks later.

A Kenmore man’s remains were found in St. Edward Park. The man was later identified as Brian MacDonald, who went missing in 2006 after going on a walk.

The University of Washington Bothell announced that Chancellor Kenyon S. Chan would step down at the end of the academic year.

Chan is just the second chancellor in the college’s history.

Bothell Mayor Mark Lamb was accused of having an affair with an intern at his law office during a wrongful termination lawsuit. The woman claimed they had a two-year affair that culminated with the mayor giving her the internship at the law office. The mayor would later admit to the affair in court documents. The King Conservation District was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Rose Foundation to help enhance an urban stream running through the North Creek Business Park and community sports fields.

The grant will fund riparian enhancement on Parr Creek, which will be accomplished by collaboration among the King Conservation District, the City of Bothell, and the surrounding Bothell community, including businesses and residents.

The project will demonstrate ways King Conservation District works with local communities to protect and enhance our urban creeks. Riparian enhancement of the creek will improve water quality by removing invasive weeds and planting native species that will eventually grow to shade the creek and provide cooler, cleaner water downstream to the Sammamish River.

These improvements will also enhance habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife and will beautify the section of the creek that runs adjacent to trails and

ball fields.

“Working partnerships are critical to the future of environmental stewardship today,” says City of Bothell Public Works Director Erin Leonhart. “Bothell is excited to provide handson learning opportunities for children and adults in the Bothell community in partnership with the King Conservation District, local educators, and small business.”

A key component of the restoration project will be the participation of the North Creek branch of Woodinville Montessori School. Students will help with restoration, gather data, and monitor the impacts of the stream’s water quality improvements over time.

“Woodinville Montessori School is thrilled to hear that the King Conservation District has received this grant. It has long been our desire to help restore Parr Creek to a more natural state,” says Woodinville Montessori Elementary and Junior High Program Director Nancy Kestek.

Nearly 7.5 million U.S. students are chronically absent every school year—missing enough school to put them at severe risk of dropping out or failing to graduate—but a new public service advertising (PSA) campaign aims to reverse this trend.

Research shows that students who attend school regularly in the early years are more likely to learn to read well by the critical 3rd grade milestone, score higher on standardized tests and graduate and go on to college than students who are chronically absent. Education is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty, but chronic absenteeism is most prevalent among lowincome students. UW Bothell researcher receives science prize REPORTER STAFF

For her classroom instruction and research on how science works, UW Bothell assistant professor Rebecca Price was selected as the winner of the monthly Prize for InquiryBased Instruction from the journal Science.

Her essay, “How We Got Here: An Inquiry-Based Activity About Human Evolution,” focuses on studying human evolution as an example of science. It is included in the Dec. 21 issue of Science. Price is an assistant professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.

The Science Prize for Inquiry-Based Instruction encourages innovation and excellence by recognizing “outstanding, inquiry-based science education modules.”

In her essay, Price describes a one-week exercise she has used to teach first-year students, seniors, biology majors and non-majors at UW Bothell.

In the exercise, students test the hypothesis that different

species of hominids evolved by retaining the juvenile characteristics of a chimpanzee-like ancestor.

“We use evidence to challenge the assumption that humans evolved from chimpanzees,” Price says.

Students used casts of chimpanzee skulls from different stages of development: fetal, infant, juvenile, adult female and adult male. They find, observe, and measure characteristics of each skull and then plot the data on a graph. Finally, they compare their chimpanzee to modern humans, Homo erectus, and Lucy.

Students also analyzed Ardi, (Ardipithecus ramidus) considered the oldest complete hominid specimen to date.

Price says once students analyze all the available data, they always agree to reject the initial hypothesis.

“Students are able to go through a paradigm shift in their own thinking,” Price said. “It’s a wonderful moment. It takes a lot of courage to recognize one’s own misunderstanding and

correct it.”

Information from the Science prize is meant to be shared and replicated by other instructors. Price hopes her model will enable other instructors to use evolutionary examples for teaching the process of science. However, it’s not just for courses on evolution.

“This is cutting-edge pedagogy being used to teach science, and it happens to be about evolution,” said Price.

Chimpanzee skulls and collateral material can be costly. Price funded her work in part through start-up funds awarded to her through UW Bothell’s School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.

“Faculty research is a cornerstone of the experience at UW Bothell,” said Susan Jeffords, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

“Rebecca’s work is a terrific example of scholarship and teaching that also translates to the classroom. It will be a model for science educators nationwide.”

“We must protect our mothers, sisters and daughters and we must educate them to be aware of the early warning signs of domestic violence,” Henkens said.

Henkens is a restaurant owner in Kirkland and a longtime advocate against domestic violence. His daughter is a therapist and does teen outreach for LifeWire.

LifeWire’s development director Kelly Becker said while Bothell city officials are the first to recommend a staggering “zero” in their funding for LifeWire, other cities continue to give a static amount in a time when the program needs more.

“This is a year of exceptional need,” Becker said. “As resources decrease across the country, the request for life-saving services, shelter and basic needs continues to grow.

The challenging economy has had a serious impact on the families we serve, with deeper cuts in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and General Assistance Unemployable, cuts in state benefits and the lack of affordable housing.”

She says many victims are forced to make a choice: live in an abusive home or become homeless.

ifeWire, an Eastside domestic violence program, recently lost city funding after the Bothell City Council adopted the 2013-14 biennial budget on Dec. 11.

“We’re not funding (LifeWire) in the 2013-14 budget,” said Bothell Deputy City Manager Steve Anderson. “LifeWire is a King County provider and we need to keep funds in Snohomish County.”

The organization, formerly known as the Eastside Domestic Violence Program, had been receiving funds from Bothell for roughly 15 years, in addition to other funding from cities around the Eastside.

Assistant City Manager Terrie Battuello acknowledged that the city had been a longtime fiscal supporter of LifeWire, but since 2009 officials found Bothell residents are not qualifying for the program or being serviced.

“Our obligation with our tax money is to support our residents,” said Battuello. “They (LifeWire) can’t customize their program to meet our needs.”

Battuello said 50-60 Bothell victims are in need of immediate shelter annually but she says LifeWire reserves shelters for people in “extreme poverty and at an imminent risk.”

In addition, there is no

geographical preference when it comes to qualifying victims in need.

However, LifeWire Executive Director Barbara Langdon said those who get to stay in the shelter, which holds 10 families at a time, are screened for lethality.

“To be candid, it’s ‘who’s most likely to be killed?’” Langdon said of the victims who are given alternative housing at LifeWire. “It has nothing to do with poverty or location.”

Langdon noted they determine lethality based on whether perpetrators have threatened to kill victims or if there are suicidal tendencies as well as if there are guns in the house.

But as a whole, LifeWire is assisting 81 families with 164 children through their housing services, which includes the hotel-motel voucher program, as well as their communitybased housing services programs.

Before the City of Bothell adopted the biennial budget, Kirkland resident Bill Henkens testified before the council, asking city officials to reconsider.

“As a society, we need to educate our children at an early age as to what is not acceptable,” Henkens told the Bothell City Council in November.

“Outreach programs will be crippled with these funding cuts and that is simply not acceptable.”

Bothell receives award in Financial Reporting For the 11th consecutive year, the City of Bothell has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada for the city’s comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

The achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and it management.

The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

Bothell Police partner with Cribs for Kids Program The Bothell Police Department is partnering with the Cribs for Kids program to provide free, portable cribs to parents who have babies sleeping in an environment that could lead to a Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID).

Nine of 10 infants who die of SUID do so because of an unsafe sleep environment.

The cribs are free and come from the Cribs for Kids National Infant Safe Sleep Initiative. They will be provided to families in need who have an infant sleeping in a situation that could lead to a death.

The Bothell Police Department was invited to participate in a Cribs for Kids grant. The department

was awarded cribs purchased by grant funds, to be distributed to citizens in need. The grant was facilitated by Deborah Robinson, the founder of the Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Investigations (SUIDI) organization. SUIDI is a national organization focusing on the investigation of child death and injury prevention. Robinson lost a child to SUID several years ago.

When Bothell police officers come across an infant who is sleeping in an unsafe environment such as a couch, regular bed, or with a family member, they will notify Bothell Police Juvenile Detective Dione Thompson. Thompson will contact the family and

offer assistance, which will include providing the crib, setting it up, and counseling the family about safe sleeping for infants. Education to help prevent sleep-related deaths due to unsafe sleeping environments is available at http://cribsforkids. org/education/.
