Former ‘Almost Live!’ comedians bring stand-up to the Plateau

M

any Washington TV aficionados have fond memories of the 1980s and ‘90s. New York and Los Angeles may have had Saturday Night Live and the rest of prime time, respectively, but Seattle had “Almost Live!,” a locally produced sketch show that proved nationally influential, launching the careers of entertainers such as Joel McHale and Bill Nye the Science Guy. On Saturday Dec. 22, the Enumclaw Expo Center will host a stand-up comedy show featuring two “Almost Live!” alumni: Brooks McBeth and John Keister.

Keister, of course, was the host of “Almost Live!” from the 1988 season onward. But the Enumclaw show is a special homecoming for McBeth, whose stand-up act was recently featured on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

McBeth is a Renton native, but his family ties through his mother, a schoolteacher, run deep in Enumclaw.

“Most of my family … is from Enumclaw and still lives here,” McBeth said. “I spent my childhood here. So it’s exciting to be able to perform here.”

He’s an alumnus of Lindbergh High School and Green River Community College who broke into television as an intern for “Almost Live!” During his early tenure, he managed to grab air time as “Intern Brooks.” One particularly self-deprecating early sketch, “A Special Offer From Brooks McBeth,” saw “Intern Brooks” offer, unsuccessfully, to solve Washington’s declining birth rate by having sex with every woman in the state (with a complementary kitchen toaster included to sweeten the deal).

McBeth earned his way into the show’s writer’s room and cast, appearing in recurring sketches such as “Jus’ Pimpin’” alongside

McHale.

After the cancellation of “Almost Live!” in 1999, McBeth was flown out to New York to audition for “Saturday Night Live” to no avail. He decided it was time to move to Los Angeles, home to the majority of television’s writing and performing jobs. There, he earned his way onto the writing staffs of “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn,” then “Trigger Happy TV,” a one-season U.S. adaptation of the British hidden camera show.

Following Comedy Central’s cancellation of “Trigger Happy TV,” McBeth took a writing job on the FOX-aired sketch series “MADtv,” where he stayed on for two seasons. “(It was) a place a thousand times more chaotic and a little more stressful than ‘Almost Live’,” he said. “These guys are incredibly talented.”

“It’s great writing for shows,” McBeth said. “At the same time, the work you put out changes as it passes through different writers hands. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen.”

He began performing standup to find another outlet for writing and performing. Unlike television,

standup provided a direct connection between comic and audience, something that appealed to McBeth.

He went through the typical pitfalls and rites of passage of breaking into standup comedy, a disastrous first set included. He went out on the road with other comedians, opened for headliners

Council passes sewer package for Eastown

After a year of debate and a vote that seemingly killed the possibility, sewer pipes will soon begin to be laid in Eastown.

The Bonney Lake City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a pair of ordinances that should lead to an agreement for the city to partner with landowners to develop a “backbone” sewer system, as well as change the rules regarding septic systems in the region to allow businesses to use what they have.

The council first approved a modified Utility Latecomers Agreement with the Eastown Landowners, LLC, a group of landowners in the region.

The agreement calls for a 5 percent contribution from the landowners on an approximately $2 million project, or about $97,705.

The ULA should allow the city and the landowners to recoup their investment overt the next 20 years as developers and businesses hook into the system and pay their share of the cost.

The agreement passed this past week differs from one rejected earlier this year in its scope and scale. The rejected ULA called for a $4 million project, an amount several councilmembers felt was too large.

“The scaled down version just makes much more sense,” agreed Roger Watt, owner of Emerald Links Driving Range and unofficial spokesperson of the LLC. Watt said he and his fellow landowners were pleasantly surprised to see the council once again addressing an issue

they thought was dead.

“We’ve come full circle on the deal,” Watt said.

The other major part of the Eastown package is a resolution that allows the use of septic systems in Eastown, presently illegal under the city code.

Right now, any change of use in Eastown requires that the building be hooked to the city’s sewer system, which is a problem for areas located at the far end of Eastown, well away from any connection to the sewers and therefore cost prohibitive.

The amendment would allow commercial buildings changing use to continue using the existing septic system, provided the change does not exceed the present system’s capacity.

In addition to the changes, the city of Bonney Lake will also create a $2 million fund to be used for additional infrastructure improvements as businesses begin to develop, primarily through the use of developer agreements, which come back for council approval.

With the passage of the ordinances, Public Works Director Dan Grigsby said he expects the council to authorize the ULA contract early next year with work to begin in the spring with a completion date of fall 2013.

The “backbone” project will extend the sewer system from 214th Avenue East to 226th Avenue East along 96th Street. It will also build a new sewer lift station near the intersection of 96th Street and 226th Avenue.

“It’s a scaled down version, but it does get sewer into Eastown,” Watt said. “It’s the beginning.”

Over the past few months, the team has taken the 25-minute show into 18 schools in five school districts to teach hundreds of kids with a mixture of humor and song.

“A lot of the kids won’t hear these messages any other way,” Sutherland said.

When the East Pierce characterization program was started about five years ago, five members signed up to be part of the troupe, but due to budget cuts, the team is down to Sutherland and Lash, as well as a few non-costumed stage hands who help out.

Lash is the clowning veteran of the pair, having performed in a similar program with a fire department in Arizona, where he noticed that the kids seemed to pay more attention — and remember the information better — when it was provided with a healthy dose of fun.

“They really retained it,” he said. “The clowns stick.”

After taking a job at East Pierce, Lash talked about his experiences and helped start the local troupe.

As training, he and Sutherland each attended clown college at the Arizona Fire Burn Educators Association where they learned the secrets of applying greasepaint and how to work with props and puppets.

The show the pair performed this year was one they saw another department perform and adapted

to their needs for their first year performing. During the show, the clowns teach how to how to call 911, the importance of exit drills in the home, what to do if a smoke alarm goes off and how to stop, drop, cover and roll if your clothes catch on fire.

Each segment ends with a song - “Call 9-1-1” to the tune of the Village People’s “YMCA” for example - and the clowns receive a “clue” to help them open a “Fire Safe” that contains valuable information for the kids’ safety.

Throughout the show, the clowns engage the children, urging them to sing along and help them find things hidden on the stage. Teachers are even brought into the act during the segment on what to do if your clothes catch on fire, where they run around at the clowns’ direction before revealing the correct answer (urged on by the kids) of “stop, drop, cover and roll.”

Sutherland said she enjoys seeing the kids faces and while assemblies are less personal than a classroom education experience, the kids are really “dialed in.”

And besides being rewarding, Lash said it was also good fun.

“We get to dress up as clowns and run around on a stage,” he said.

Boomers’ enthusiasm for tech is growing

Even though they’re still common, jokes about clueless baby boomers calling their kids to figure out how to use technology are starting to feel outdated. While today’s youngest generations are practically born with tablets, smartphones and laptops in their hands, grandparents are also adopting technology at a startling pace.

Boomers’ enthusiasm to consume new technology is growing and changing as fast as the field of new

products available. In fact, a 2012 Forrester Research technology survey found 78 percent are online, and of those, 54 percent own laptops. Tablet use among boomers is growing too; 11 percent already own one and another 15 percent plan on buying one soon.

While the boomers’ generational trait of progressiveness helps to explain this tech rush, more practical reasons demystify it as well. Many among the generation are at the peak of

their earning power, with more money to spend on technology than other age groups. A 2012 survey by Nielsen showed that within five years, approximately 50 percent of the U.S. population will be 50 or older, and they’ll control 70 percent of disposable income.

For this generation, a forward-thinking mindset has always been a common trait, so crossing the digital divide was bound to happen.

Despite their proven

purchasing power, many advertisers are leaving these consumers in the lurch.

Although boomers account for 49 percent of total sales of consumer packaged goods, Nielsen estimates that less than 5 percent of advertising dollars are targeted toward adults ages 35 to 64.

Those in favor again stated their belief that a metropolitan parks district is the best way to create a dedicated funding source for parks in the city, as well as their decision that allowing voters to choose on the additional tax was the proper move.

If approved by a majority of voters, the park district would allow the district — which would contiguous with the city’s borders — to levy a tax that would be used only for parks. The maximum levy allowed by law is $0.75 per $1,000 assessed home value, though the discussions have centered on a tax a little more than half that amount.

The city estimates a levy of about $0.44 per $1,000 assessed home value, or about $95 per year for someone owning a home valued at $215,000, the Bonney Lake average.

Studies have routinely shown that Bonney Lake park land has failed to keep pace and is well below expert recommendations for parkland given the size of it population, which has nearly doubled since 2000.

The city council would become the park district’s governing body.

“Voters have a right to decide on the issue,” Councilman Donn Lews said, adding that he thinks an MPD will provide the structure needed to build up the city’s park systems.

“It’s a start and it allows us to go forward with a plan,” he said.

Councilman Mark Hamilton called the decision to place the MPD on the ballot “extremely difficult for me.” Hamilton said he has trust in the voters and knows that parks has been a priority of the voters and the council and the mayor for years, but has been lacking a funding mechanism.

“This is a bedroom community,” Hamilton said. “One of the things it’s lacked is a good parks system.”

Annual ‘Tour de Lights’ run set for Friday in Sky Island

a “betrayal” of the citizens who elected them and said she does not appreciate the attempt to subvert the 2/3 majority necessary for a tax increase by placing a measure on the ballot that would only need a simple majority for approval.

In total at least six citizens, including park board member Jaime Trejo, who at the park board level voted against recommending the city council place this on the ballot, urged the council not to place the measure on the ballot, mostly citing economic concerns.

A handful of residents, including park board member Jim Bouchard and PLanning Commissioner Winona Jacobsen, spoke in favor of the district.

Mayor Neil Johnson thanked all those who spoke for their input and reiterated his view that a funding mechanism for parks is necessary for longterm viability.

“This city needs to develop for the future,” he said. “If we keep looking at today, we won’t move forward.”

The issue will be on the April 23, 2013 special election ballot.

“In the overall scheme of things … it is the best overall financing plan the city has come up with,” Hamilton said.

Those opposed to placing an MPD on the ballot worried about the increase in property taxes being more than the citizens can handle at this point, a point echoed by many of those who spoke on the matter during the citizen comment portion of the meeting.

Minton-Davis said she had been waffling on her vote and that her family had also suffered during the economic downturn and therefore she “could not in good conscious be in favor of it.”

McKibbin was a little more vague in his reasoning, stating he would vote no because “you don’t need my yes vote.”

Prior to the vote, several residents urged the council not to place the item on the ballot.

All I want for Xmas is a flu shot

Deck the halls with airborne flu germs, hack-hackhack-hack-cough, hack-hack-hack-phlegm.

Contrary to this column’s title, I did not have the fortune and foresight to ask Santa for protection against any of the three flus making the rounds this year. As I write this almost a week after the fact, I’m still trying to cough out the little elf in my throat.

Media a powerful hammer in political toolbox A major reason President Obama won the elections of 2008 and 2012 was because he and his advisers harnessed the power of the data-mining capacities of the computer and the mass appeal of the Internet. Obama for America polled, communicated with, organized and milked supporters for donations more effectively than any other candidate in American history.

If we look at our national past, we see three other presidents who used the media of their day to sway public opinion to change the nation.

The first president to use the media to serve his purposes was Teddy Roosevelt. His term of office began with the death of President William McKinley to an assassin’s bullet in 1901. McKinley, by example, taught Roosevelt what not to do in dealing with the press.

Back in the 1890s before Roosevelt became president, two New York newspaper publishers, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, had national influence because of the size of their publications and the use of paid reporters. Other newspapers throughout the country used the New York World and the Morning

Journal as sources for their stories.

The publishers competed with each other and used sensationalized news accounts to stir up public sentiment against the Spanish who were trying to put down an insurrection in their Cuban colony. The writing style of Pulitzer and Hearst became know as yellow journalism.

Public opinion, stirred up by these two papers, successfully pressured President McKinley to ask Congress to go war against Spain, against his better judgment. Teddy Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the Navy at the time, observed this new media power and decided to use it to his advantage when he became president.

Teddy was masterful in using newspapers to shape public opinion.

T.R. was able to bring an end to

unhealthy corporate meatpacking practices in companies like Armour and Company. He did this by publicly supporting and advertising the socialist journalist Upton Sinclair’s book “The Jungle.”

People were shocked at Sinclair’s stories about how rats, rat dung and rat poison all ended up in their breakfast sausage. So many Americans quit eating meat as a result that it was the meatpacking industry itself that lobbied Congress to pass meat inspection laws to regain public trust.

Franklin D. Roosevelt learned from his distant cousin’s example to use the new media of his era, the radio, to gather support for his New Deal programs during the Great Depression of the 1930s. FDR’s radio “Fireside Chats” allowed him to use his powerful and engaging personality to bring about major changes to the government. That same personality came through to harness the nation’s support for U.S. involvement in World War II. President Ronald Reagan, a former actor, knew well how to harness the power of the next media, televi-

Letters to the Editor Park improvement a long, slow process I appreciate that the Bonney Lake City Council has voted to put a Metropolitan Park District (MPD) on the April 2013 ballot.

In my travels trying to pass a bond in 2004, as a former park board member and former city councilmember, and as a resident of the Bonney Lake area for over 25 years, I have heard many wants and needs for our parks, trails and a community center or YMCA. The last time Bonney Lake attempted a measure to improve parks and trails in Bonney Lake, a super majority of 60 percent was needed, and the final count was 52.3 percent. If that had been an MPD, which only requires a simple majority, it would have passed and we would be much further with our parks by now, no doubt.

Yes, it has been a long and slow process.

We are coming out of the great recession. There have been several indicators of that: dropping unemployment, raising median home prices, increased single family home starts in Bonney Lake, increased spending this holiday season over last year are but a few.

This council has taken steps this year to encourage growth of the city, with some success.

And I am encouraged by the statistics provided at the November park board meeting about 20 statewide ballot measures affecting parks. Eighty-five percent of them received a simple majority, meaning over 50 percent of the voters said “yes” to parks. In fact, the average among these 17 measures was 61.7 percent.

While some may not have passed because they needed a superma-

jority, it is impressive that even during these times, the majority of voters are saying “yes” to parks.

The MPD needs a simple majority.

We have numerous events scheduled in our parks that are free to attend but we need parks that support them. We must ensure we have a venue for Tunes @ Tapps, Bark in the Park, Bonney Lake Days, and Egg Hunts. We need to do more than maintain what we have. We need to grow more and better parks for our current and the future needs of our kids, grandkids and us.

According to the park element of the comp plan, we currently have deficits in our parks that will widen with 2025 projections. A youth center and a pool are our biggest shortfalls. We are 1 ball field short now and lack 120 acres of parks based on our population.

The $25,000 estimate to put this on the ballot could be less depending how many other issues are on the ballot that we share the cost of.

Unfortunately, $25,000 is a small

amount compared to the projected budget for the suggested park projects listed on the city website.

It will be up to the voters to decide if they can afford to carve some of their household budget out for parks. If the voters say no, then we will fiscally continue in a holding pattern of maintenance only, just as the city budget suggests.

Reagan’s engaging personality and story-telling gift drew both Democrats and Republicans to his point of view to change the direction of the nation yet again.

As demonstrated by these four presidents, using emerging media to shape public opinion is very powerful.

President Obama used electronic social media to win re-election, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to use it to bring about the changes he wants in the nation. Time will tell whether he will be able to harness support or whether social media will turn around and crush its most effective proponent.

Question: I’d love to run a 5K with some friends this spring, but I am not active at all right now. How should I go about training for something like this?

Answer: This is a great question!

There are actually several plans on the Internet that can take you from the couch to the 5K course in as little as eight to 10 weeks. In fact, you can even use one of these plans if you have no intention of running a 5K, but simply want to start incorporating fitness (running) into your lifestyle.

Most of the plans start with combination walk/jog/walk session, three days per week, steadily increasing the actual jog time from just two or three minutes to about 10 minutes by weeks four or five. At this point, you also start to add an

extra day of training, totaling four sessions each week. As you continue to increase your jog time, you gradually remove the walking warm-up, thereby finishing each workout with just a basic walking cool-down.

By the time you get to 10 weeks, you should be able to run consistently for 25 to 30 minutes without stopping.

Question: I’m looking to add some serious muscle mass and I’m curious about the engineered weight gainers out on the market? In other words, do you think weight gainers should be used to gain weight?

Answer: Weight gainer supplements can have a place when it comes to adding muscle, but here’s my general philosophy on the matter. First of all, we know calories are of prime importance if gaining weight is the goal. We also know that some people simply can’t eat enough to gain the type of weight

that they’d like. This means liquid calories become pretty important because liquids obviously aren’t quite as filling as solid foods. But my personal preference would be to create my own weight gainer smoothies with real foods like fruits, yogurt, protein powders, oats, milk and even things like peanut butter, frozen yogurt and a little bit of chocolate. Then, you can combine these “beverages” with some hearty meals and you’ll be on your way to a bigger you in no time. If you’ve found a particular weight gainer supplement that you happen to like and you can afford it, then you can certainly go that route, too. I just happen to be a “food first” kind of guy and I’ve always found my smoothies and shakes more palatable than what is on the market. In the end, do what you think is best and don’t forget to train for weight gain as well.

corner FROM 6 time or a flexible schedule can feel — and usually are — obliged to tough it out to keep the rent paid and the heater running. I’m lucky enough to have both those benefits, but I remember when I didn’t and it’s not fun.

Other times the pressure is psychological. Probably most people have had at least one boss who believed “quarantine” was French for “slacker nonsense” and preferred the extra-clean countertop gleam that could only come from a layer of virus-rich sweat.

If you’re fortunate enough to have an employer who doesn’t believe the bubonic plague makes a good coworker, mind your recovery. Think of the flu like an inconvenient house guest: if you set clear boundaries and stick to them, it will be gone soon enough; do it too many favors and it will stay well past it’s welcome.

Here are some of my sick day tips: 1. Bad movies. I’m not talking about actual bad-bad movies, like “Act of Valor” (I realize I’m probably alone in that

opinion, so feel free to write hate mail to the address at the bottom of Page 6).

You’re not trying to make yourself more sick. I’m talking about guilty pleasures like “Resident Evil,” “Sleepaway Camp,” “Death Wish” or the lesser Bond flicks.

There’s just something about so-badthey’re-good movies that go hand-inhand with sick days.

2. Busy hands. It’s not a good idea to push yourself when you have the flu, but you can’t sit and watch the tube the entire time you’re out of commission.

A minor engaging activity will stave off mental sluggishness, which I find contributes the lion’s share to cabin fever.

A jigsaw puzzle is a good project you can complete in short or long stretches of time, depending on your interest.

Sketching is a personal favorite. If you need a sketch subject, fever hallucinations make great models.

3. Feed yourself. This sounds like a no-brainer, but cooking — and the resulting dishes — is the last thing you want to deal with when you’re sick.

Sometimes it just seems easier to skip a meal. That’s a mistake. Stick to easy items like canned soup, ramen noodles and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

if it helps, but it’s important to keep nutrients going in to your body. That’s true for ailments other than the flu as well. The old saying “starve a cold, feed a fever” is pure myth: you need to feed both to get better.

4. While you’re at it, drink your water. Another seeming no-brainer that’s easy to forget. If a fever is causing you to sweat more, or you have any ailment that’s causing you to purge, it’s doubly important to replenish lost fluids. Carry your water around in a large container like a milk jug or recycled Big Gulp cup and sip regularly.

5. Comic books! I don’t know about you, but my concentration suffers when I’m down for the count. It’s the perfect time to read, but reading becomes more difficult, a literal headache over an extended period of time. Comic books split the difference with a fraction of the text and plenty of pretty pictures to stare at when your brain goes into sleep mode. Most pharmacy drug stores carry “Spider-Man,” “Archie” or “MAD Magazine,” so it’s easy to pick up a few issues while you make a cough syrup run. Unless you’re a dork like me and keep a box of funnybooks by the bed.

lot, Daza’s uncle and two cousins, had been injured by gunfire. One man had been shot in his leg, one in his arm and abdomen, and the third in the abdomen.

The third man’s injuries were life-threatening, but he was stabilized in surgery Sunday.

The group were construction workers visiting from California on business.

The surviving victims told police the shooter was an African-American man driving a silver car with spoiler, accompanied by a Caucasian woman. Neither suspect was known to the victims, they told police.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue transported all three surviving victims to Tacoma General. Sumner police and the Pierce County Metro Crime Response Unit continue to investigate the incident.

letters FROM 7 only measure on the ballot will be the creation of a special taxing district called a Metro Park District (MPD). This taxing district, if approved by a simple majority of the voters, will implement up to a $0.75 cent tax for each $1,000 of your property’s assessed value.

I do not oppose the creation of more parks nor improvements to our existing venues; however, there are many dangers involved with creating a special taxing district. I will not argue the ideological pitfalls in this letter; instead, I would like to highlight several ironies that surrounded the Council’s vote: 1. The special election will cost Bonney Lake citizens roughly $25,000. This money could be better spent to partially fund a greatly needed K-9 unit for Bonney Lake Police. Isn’t ensuring the safety of Bonney Lake’s citizens the Council’s first responsibility?

2. The Council, by endorsing the special election, endorses raising taxes on a night when leaders of the Food Bank testified that the number of needy families in our community is increasing, not decreasing.

Will an increase in property tax help to feed citizens in Bonney Lake?

3. Finally, our community overwhelmingly approved I-1185 last November. Do you remember I-1185?

The initiative reaffirmed the requirement that a tax increase can only be enacted with a two-thirds majority vote of either the legislature or the people. The MPD measure if approved, however, will impose a new tax on the citizens of Bonney Lake with only a simple majority. Did the Council members see the results of the November election?

This special election, to create a special taxing district labeled as an MPD, is a loophole being used by municipalities to raise taxes with only 50 percent of voter approval.

The Council’s authorization for the special election defies what the people of Bonney Lake mandated last November—twothirds majority approval is required to raise taxes.

This political tactic used by the Council must be unveiled—it’s a tax increase that will be enacted with only a majority of the voter’s approval. For their decision, the Council gets a very large lump of coal.

And for whatever reason, you have to look at it? I get the same thing when I read Mr. Elfers’ articles each week. I don’t care much for his topics of discussion. But

My parents taught me from as early as I can remember that lying, no matter how big or small was bad.

That’s something naughty you just don’t do. Sure, it’s easier to fib. When you’re caught in a situation, you want to cover it up.

What about those government “leaders” who lied over and over, right to your face about the Benghazi attack? And that’s cool? To

lie to us Americans? I guess it’s OK now to not tell the truth. If our president lies and gets away with it what is that teaching us? Our kids?

Piece by piece, our country is slowly being taken away. And people don’t realize this or even see it coming. That is the difference between the Dems and Reps. I know what’s coming

Rich Elfers also says that “pride and arrogance defeated the Republicans in 2012”. Really? No. It was partly the extremely one-sided media (pretend Romney was the president and he lied right out of his

teeth about Benghazi. The one-sided media would have been all over that like flies on you-know-what). Part of it was that Obama voters (not all of them) depend on government freebies. Eight out of 10 people voted for Obama who get some sort of “help.” It’s no wonder welfare skyrocketed, he needed those votes. I could go on for days.

Rich Elfers, please don’t paint pictures and assume you know why Republicans are “this-way-and-thatway.” Because I will tell you, in my picture, it looks nothing like yours. Instead of doing comparisons all the time, maybe stick to the side you know best. I am not “proud” or “arrogant” and I won’t be “humbled” by this election. I’ll be over here, painting a picture of the future (since I’m “facing reality and giving up living in the past”). This picture won’t be very pretty. Actually, it will probably be ugly. Because half of America wanted it that way.

The Sumner boys wrestling team gave the Franklin Pierce Cardinals the fights of their lives at Thursday night’s home dual meet. The Spartans defeated the Cardinals 60-16 and took victories in 11 of 14 match-ups.

The evening began with the 132 pound weight class. Josiah Schliesman faced off against Tanner Bloom. Schliesman wrestled into two rounds, but was pinned with five seconds left in the second.

Wyatt James, 138 pounds,

wrestled Logan Foster with merciless ferocity. The two spent much of the match on the ground, James maintaining a nearly unbreakable hip ride on Foster. The pattern continued all the way to a technical fall, wrestling’s mercy rule when the point gap is too much for the lesser scorer to overcome.

The match ended 17-1 in James’ favor.

But again, it wasn’t all bad for Bonney Lake, however, as Leiggi won the 50-yard freestyle for the Panthers, despite what Paulsen characterized as a “terrible start,” and Weaver won the 100 breaststroke.

Additionally, Cameron Gehrke posted another district qualifying time in the 200 individual medley and just missed qualifying in the 100 butterfly by about a half-second.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team also just missed qualifying for districts by 0.08 seconds and Paulsen is sure they will get it in the team’s next meet.

Paulsen said his team is dealing with illness and a few academic issues at the moment, but he has been impressed with the way new team members have “stepped up,” including Skylar Livingston, Enrique Saenez, Kyle Jones and Ryan McGraw.

The Panthers next meet is Tuesday against Decatur at the Sumner pool.

It was another tough week for the Bonney Lake boys swim team as the Panthers dropped a pair of meets this past week to Lakes and Enumclaw.

First up was Lakes, who bested the Panthers 105-76 on Dec. 12. It is the closest the Panthers have come to beating the Lancers during his tenure, coach Jay Paulsen wrote in an email.

“A couple of (disqualifications) kept us at arm’s reach, but it’s going to hap-

pen,” Paulsen wrote.

There was good news for the Panthers, however, as Josh Weaver set a new varsity record in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning the race at the wall.

In addition, Dom Leiggi qualified for districts in the 50-yard freestyle with his best time of the year and Cameron Gehrke qualified for districts in the 200 individual medley.

Council Puts Park District Proposal On Ballot

O

n may 7th the City held a Parks Summit to gather citizen input on desired park projects in Bonney Lake. A follow-up Parks Summit was held September 27th. Nearly 100 people attended one of the Summit meetings. On October 30th the City Council held a joint meeting with the Park Board to discuss the proposal to form a Bonney Lake Park district to serve as a funding mechanism to create more parks, trails, ball fields, and a community recreation center. At the urging of the Park Board and various citizens, the Council passed resolution 2258 on december 11th which calls for a special election April 23, 2013 to create the Bonney Lake Park district.

What is a Park District?

The Park District will be established under RCW 35.61.

The Bonney Lake M e t r o p o l i t a n Park District would be a distinct taxing authority created for the “management, control, improvement, maintenance, and acquisition of parks, parkways, boulevards, and recreational facilities”. The District boundaries would match the City boundaries (and would automatically expand to include any future annexed areas). The City Council would serve as the ex officio Park District board.

Why create a Park District?

The developed park system today isn’t much bigger than it was back when the City was half its present size. The City has little funds for park development, and dedicated sources of park funding have dwindled nearly 80% over the past few years. The Park District is simply a financing mechanism to provide the City with a funding source to develop a park system. Last year, the City adopted an updated Parks and Recreation Plan which identified numerous park needs that have no funding source. Top needs identified are ball fields, trails, playgrounds, and a recreation facility such as a YMCA or a community center. Based on national

standards (2012), a City the size of Bonney Lake has less than half the number of acres of developed community parks than is recommended. In terms of City ball fields (baseball, softball, soccer), we should have 16 fields.

The City has 6. It should have 9 basketball courts. We currently have 2. When you add future annexation areas into the calculation, the deficit becomes much greater. A community our size should also have a community recreation center. We have none. We should also have 6.5 miles of developed trails. While the City has adopted the Fennel Creek Trail Plan, there has been little funding to implement the plan. To date, less than 1 mile of trail has been developed. hoW WoulD the Park District oPerate?

While technically a separate municipal corporation, the Park District would essentially operate as the Parks Department of the City. The City Council would serve as the ex officio Park District board, and City staff would provide support services to the District (finance, accounting, legal, etc.). This would achieve efficiencies and an economy of scale, rather than duplicating these services with separate District staff. [ See Proposal (cont.) ]

Bonney Lake Ice And Snow Removal Policy

T

he SR 410 – Main Street Intersection Improvement Project is moving along on schedule, currently they are completing Phase 1 of construction which is on the Main Street side of the project. Before the Christmas break we anticipate a Main Street trench crossing for utility conduits, some paving of the disturbed portion under construction, and coring samples across SR 410 to determine the depth of asphalt. Phase 2 will begin with saw cutting of SR 410 for the utility trench crossing, the west bound right turn lane closure for stormwater line installation as well as utility trench and conduit installation. The project will shut down for the Christmas week.

This project is funded with Franciscan Medical Pavilion mitigation and City of Bonney Lake Traffic Impact Fees. The entire project is estimated for completion in June 2013. ith the winter storm season approaching, citizens are reminded of the City’s policy on ice and snow removal. City Public Works crews clear snow from priority roads first. Priority roads include those around medical facilities, schools, main arteries, and on hills. The goal is to clear all roads cleared within 15 hours, unless the storm is prolonged. First, priority roads take precedence and other streets (residential and dead-end streets) will be cleared when conditions allow. Sanding starts when there is close to two inches of snow on the street or, in areas with steep streets, just before a major storm arrives. Sand is generally applied only on hills and at intersections. Snow plowing starts when about four inches of snow accumulates on streets, or earlier when continuing snowfall is projected or a hazardous situation exists. As the current economic crisis has resulted in decreased City budgets, residents may not see the same level of service as in past years. How MucH would tHe Park district cost?

An MPD has the authority to levy a property tax to pay for parks and recreation. The maximum levy allowed by law is $0.75 per $1000 of assessed value, but there are statutory tax limits that would likely limit the maximum levy to about $0.44 per $1000 of assessed value. This could vary over time, depending on assessed values and the rates of other taxing districts. Since an MPD is a “junior taxing district”, it has lower priority for funding than other “higher priority” taxing authorities.

On a home assessed by the county at $200,000, a $0.44 park levy would cost an additional $7.39 per month. A levy amount of $0.75 would cost $11.68 per month. wHat would i Get for My additional assessMents?

With the assessment authorized by the Park District, the City Council would likely use the annual assessment as debt service on a park bond that would implement the parks plan in phases. The parks plan is a 20 year plan, and not everything could be built at once. The City Council would confer with interested groups to determine which priorities were addressed first. The initial projects would likely be a combination of new ball fields and trails. Over time, all of the priorities, including a community recreation center, would be addressed.

Part of the tax assessment would be retained to maintain and operate the new or expanded facilities. wHy now?

The Council had considered doing this in 2011, but waited until the economy improved and there was demonstrated public interest. While the economy hasn’t fully rebounded, there are positive signs. Housing prices and sales are increasing. The population of the City continues to grow. Since 2010, Pierce County unemployment has dropped nearly 4 percentage points. Average household income in Bonney Lake exceeds the state average by an estimated $17,434. Parks are a key indicator of a high quality community. If the City waited for perfect economic conditions, it may never do anything, and fall further behind. 

The Sumner and Bonney Lake gymnastics teams came in third and fourth place at a four-school meet held at PEAK Gymnastics in Enumclaw Dec. 12.

The Spartans achieved scores of 28.25 on the uneven bars, 37.4 on the beam, 35.1 on floor work, and 40.05 on the vault, for 140.8 points. Sierra Tinsley was the best all-around Spartan, coming in sixth place.

The Panthers scored 24.7 on the uneven bars, 34.1 on the beam, 28.6 on floor work, and 38.05 on the vault, for 125.45. Samantha McCurley was the best allaround Panther, coming in eighth place.

Myers chose not to waste his time standing after the whistle, quickly grabbing control of Bennett’s upper body and dragging him down to the mat. Bennett did not take the turn of events laying down; the two traveled all over the mat

as he repeatedly attempted to break free, going out of bounds twice. After the second return to the referee’s position, Myers grabbed Bennett by his leg as he tried to scramble out from bottom, reeling him in and forcing him to his back for a pin at 1:24.

Earlier in the week, the Spartans lost to crosstown rival Bonney Lake 37-36.

As we care for our neighbors in need, these churches and pastors care for us. Our work is often difficult, emotionally challenging, and always pulls at your heart.

Our ability to greet clients with compassion and understanding, even on the hardest days, is fueled by the prayers we receive from the churches, congregations and pastors of our community. One of our regular visitors, a homeless man, came in last week not feeling well. He was not his usual self. We had him sit down, gave him something warm to drink, and had him rest a bit. Soon he was lying on the bench, saying “something doesn’t feel right.” As we sat with him and asked more about how he was feeling, we determined it was better to get him to a doctor than risk sending him back to his tent.

Because the number of staff and volunteers are limited at any one time, this situation presented a challenge in transporting this client.

We experienced that wonderful timing we often see around here.

Pastor Dan just happened to come in on one of his usual visits to check in. He always greets us with kindness and always asks “How are you all doing today?” When Pastor Dan asks how you are doing, he really wants to know. His concern for our wellbeing as caregivers is genuine. This day he also asked, “Is there something I can do?”

Thankfully Pastor Dan was able to give our client a ride to the hospital.

Early this year, a man came in needing assistance. We helped him with food, propane and worked with him on some steps he needed to take to help himself. We saw him every few days while he was trying to get back on his feet. His past included drugs, alcohol and some violence. We were able to help him here in our office, but the day he needed a ride to his home just out of town, we needed help. Again, a community pastor happened to be at POM for a meeting. He offered to give this young man a ride. It was a good opportunity for this client to share his story again, and the pastor provided additional emotional support at a critical time in this man’s life.

According to analysis of data involving nearly 37,000 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, a potential link exists between obesity and gingivitis and periodontitis. The study involved men who did not have gum disease at the beginning of the study. Every two years, the men were asked to report their weight, hip and waist circumferences, and gum disease status. At the end of 16 years, a significant relationship was found between obesity and gum disease, even after accounting for variables such as smoking, activity level, etc.

This study confirms a previous study that showed the same link. Researchers theorize that the worse the body’s insulin resistance (which is linked with obesity), the higher the prevalence of gum disease.
