Sounder to Lakewood

Photos Courtesy Sound Transit Sound Transit celebrated the start of service to Lakewood and South Tacoma with a public ribboncutting ceremony on Sat., Oct. 6 at the Lakewood, South Tacoma and Tacoma Dome stations. Free rides on the Sounder train were offered to the public, along with other festivities. The service officially began on Mon., Oct. 8. "The start of Sounder service to South Tacoma and Lakewood marks an exciting milestone in the work of Sound Transit to bring commuter rail to more communities in Pierce County," said Sound Transit Board Chair and Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. "More South Sound residents will be able to experience the convenient, first-class service that more than 10,000 Sounder riders from Tacoma to Everett enjoy each weekday." Beginning with the new service, Sound Transit started operating five peak-service trains that originate at the Lakewood Station, stop at South Tacoma, and proceed to the Tacoma Dome station and other stations further north. The first northbound train leaves Lakewood at 4:42 a.m. The first afternoon train to Lakewood leaves King Street Station at 4:20 p.m. Morning and evening trains leave every 25 minutes. Departure schedules for other south line Sounder stations remain unchanged. Service to Lakewood and South Tacoma also includes Sound Transit's popular game day trains, which served more than 132,000 Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders FC fans last year. This fall, Sounder event trains will also serve Husky weekend afternoon games taking place at CenturyLink Field. "The Sounder extension to Lakewood is a significant achievement that represents years of meticulous planning and hard work," said Sound Transit Boardmember and Lakewood City Councilmember Mary Moss. "The support Sound Transit has received from its federal partners, local jurisdictions, and surrounding communities has made possible the realization of a longstanding vision: to extend commuter rail service further south so more people can enjoy the benefits of riding Sounder." KPLU hires new general manager

Posted online Fri., Dec. 14 Photo Courtesy KPLU Erik Nycklemoe has been named General Manager of KPLU/Pacific Public Media, succeeding Paul Stankavich, who will retire at the end of January after leading the station since 2007. Nycklemoe has served as Director of Network Initiatives at American NYCKLEMOE Public Media Group in St. Paul, Minnesota, since 2008. The Group includes American Public Media, Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio, Classical South Florida and Greenspring Media. His responsibilities include acquisitions, developing multi-year business strategies and pursuing partnership opportunities. He will begin at KPLU on Feb. 4. While at American Public Media Group, Nycklemoe also assumed interim leadership roles including managing director of music programming, where he envisioned and helped to launch Minnesota's first statewide used instrument campaign for schools. Nycklemoe presided over the purchase of more than 20 stations and translators in four states, developed enterprise and company performance metrics and dashboards, and led the multi-year, enterprise-wide

City Council to discuss Foss Waterway development Posted online Fri., Dec. 14 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to discuss future development plans for Thea Foss Waterway. Under its third operating agreement with the City of Tacoma, the Foss Waterway Development Authority (FWDA) is required to update its Master Redevelopment Strategy and the final document must be approved by city council next month. During the meeting Tuesday, FWDA staff will make a presentation regarding the strategy. Councilmembers will not take public comment during the study session, which will be held on Tues., Dec. 18 at 12 p.m. in Room 16 of Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St. Audio from the meeting will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and online at tvtacoma.com. 37 WSP troopers graduate during Olympia ceremony Posted online Fri., Dec. 14 Photos Courtesy Washington State Patrol At a ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda Dec. 14, 37 Washington State Patrol Troopers were sworn in by Washington State Supreme Court Justice James Johnson, and presented their commission cards by Governor Christine Gregoire and Chief John R. Batiste. The Washington State Patrol Academy only produces approximately three cadet classes each biennium, which accounts for about 120 new troopers. Historically, only about four to six percent of the total number of applicants makes the grade to become WSP Troopers. Six of the 37 troopers sworn in Friday have been assigned to patrol the Tacoma area. A tradition that began over 91 years ago on June 21, 1921, when six men kick-started their Harley motorcycles, strapped on an arm band, and started a proud tradition known today as the Washington State Patrol continues to this day with the graduation of the 100th Trooper Basic Training Class. The event was signaled by the stream of shiny white patrol cars parked in the lanes leading up to the capitol steps. During the ceremony, the Core Values Award was presented to Trooper Marcus A. Sanchez. This award is presented to the trooper cadet who most typifies the training division core values. The recipient of this award was determined by an anonymous vote of his classmates, and is sponsored by the Washington State Patrol Memorial

Foundation. The award honors the most recent State Patrol employee to give their life in service to the citizens of the state of Washington. Trooper Tony Radulescu was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 23, 2012, and this award was presented Friday in his honor.

He also spearheaded Minnesota Public Radio's involvement in a corporate/non-profit collaboration with the goal of eradicating hunger in the state. Between 2002 and 2008, Nycklemoe held two positions at Minnesota Public Radio. As Director of Radio, he was program director of MPR's news and classical services, managing on-air programming and on-air membership activities for 38 MPR stations and Classical 24 which is carried on 250 stations nationwide. As Director of Broadcasting, Nycklemoe led production and operation of MPR's three regional broadcast streams and oversaw the management of 38 radio stations.

Nycklemoe also worked as Program Director/Executive Producer at Arizona Public Radio in Flagstaff, and as News Director and Program Director at New Hampshire Public Radio in Concord. In the early 1990s, he held production and editorial positions at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University Divinity School. "This is an exciting and important opportunity in a wonderful part of the country," Nycklemoe said. "Seattle/Tacoma is one of the best public media markets in the country — with amazingly supportive audiences. I can't wait to start working with the staff and supporters to build KPLU so it can even more fully realize its public service mission."
