For Bothell boys basketball head coach Ron Bollinger this season is an anomaly. During his 26 years of coaching he has had three players continue

on to play Division I basketball in college. It is a true rarity to have more than one in any season.

This year his Cougar squad has two players who have signed to play Division I basketball and a junior transfer who could make

it three by the end of the season.

“Not very often are you in a position to win a state title,” said Bollinger, who is a Bothell High School graduate. “But we have to prove it out on the floor.”

Football can be a religion in the Northshore community, with Pop Keeney Stadium the place of worship. But one of its most beloved leaders is stepping away from the sidelines and leaving a long legacy of success and stewardship.

For 34 seasons Frank Na-

ish has led the Inglemoor High School football team onto the field but he has recently decided to step away to spend more time with his family.

“I grew up with football, so I only really know one thing,” said Naish, whose father Mickey was the head football coach at Bishop Blanchet High School.

“There is a part of life I

He finishes his football career as the winningest head coach in KingCo history with a record of 189-137. Jimmy Carter was president when Naish began coaching at Inglemoor High School.

Bothell’s newest Christmas tradition hopes to be Evergreen Lights, presented

by Evergreen Community Church.

Featuring 45,000 lights on more than three miles of wire, the display is synchronized to more than 25 minutes of Christmas music.

Running for 40 nights, the lights will be visible from 5:30-10 p.m. every night until Jan. 1. A dozen volunteers, many from Boeing and Microsoft, have worked since July to create the light show.

The church also has free cocoa and treats for visitors.

The lights are on display at Evergreen Community Church, located at 3429 240th Street SE, Bothell.

“I think most of the time they put the item on the roof of their car, forget it is there, and then speed off,” said Anderson.

Anderson is out taking care of the stretch of road rain or shine and he said that he has been doing it since 1999.

“Jim is a remarkable and humble man,” said Portis.

Anderson was born in Iowa and grew up on a farm in a family of seven.

That is where he learned to share responsibility, according to friends.

“He attributes his strong values of community service and cooperation to those early experiences,” said Portis. “He attributes his basic philosophy of life to the following adages he learned from his mother.”

Bothell-based HaloSource, Inc., the clean water technology company, has entered into a development and production agreement with Tupperware Brands Corporation, the U.S.-based global direct selling company, to provide HaloSource’s patented HaloPure technology in cartridges for Tupperware’s new line of gravity-based water purifiers that will be initially launched through Tupperware India.

needs to be done,” said Anderson, who celebrated his 90th birthday in September. “I take pride in my neighborhood.”

Anderson said that he picks up trash, cuts back blackberry bushes during the spring and summer and rakes up leaves during the fall.

“Right now it is pine cones and branches,” said Anderson. “People are out here with their baby carriages and walking. It makes it tough to walk out here.”

Anderson walks down the hill every other day from his home at Northeast 155th Street to the main road and down to Northeast 143th Street — and back up the steep hill.

“On the opposite day I do yoga and stretching,” he said. “It is good exercise. It keeps up my health.”

His cleaning also includes retrieving things that people have lost.

“I have picked up $5 bills, purses, suitcases, carrying cases, all sorts of things,” said Anderson. “I found a carrying case that belonged to a counselor.”

The case contained some important and private documents. But Anderson did as he always

talk about; judge another by his actions, not by what others say about him; give the other fellow the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise; and never expect something for nothing.

Anderson served in the U.S. Air Force from 19431971.

“He can still fit into his uniform,” said Portis.

He moved to Norway Hill in 1996.

Anderson has survived two wives, both were taken from him by illness. He has been married to his third wife Missy, whom he met while swing dancing, for 11 years.

“We have had a wonderful time preparing for this event and have learned a lot,” said Missy about Jim’s 90th birthday party in September that was celebrated not only by family and friends but his neighbors as well. “Now we know exactly what to do when we host the celebration for 100. Mark your calendars so you won’t miss it!”

Anderson said that he has had many people stop to thank him for picking up the trash, but cleaning up the hill is part of why he has lived so long.

“Exercise, eat good and meet your neighbors,” said Anderson.

Toys badly needed for Hopelink’s holiday gift rooms

hen I was a little girl, my younger sister and I wrote a letter to Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Handwritten in pencil, it said something like this: “Dear Santa, Maybe it’s hard for you to find us because our house is surrounded by trees where it’s dark and our parents leave the porch light off at night. But we’re writing you because we want to send you our address so you know how to find us this year.”

Our letter included our address and our wish list of toys that we asked Santa to bring us. We folded the letter, sealed it in an envelope and placed it on the windowsill in our bedroom. On Christmas morning, we saw the letter that was still there and hoped that Santa had read it.

We excitedly threw on some clothes, talked about what kind of toys we hoped Santa had brought us and ran downstairs to look for our presents. When we didn’t find a Christmas tree set up, we wondered if maybe Santa had just dropped off the presents. I remember we looked in every corner of the house – including the porch. Nothing.

Of course, we didn’t understand at the time that we didn’t receive any presents because our parents didn’t celebrate the holiday for religious reasons.

But it saddens me to think that there are thousands of children right here in our community who may go without gifts this year because their parents can’t afford them.

Last year, nearly 7,000 children received a new toy from one of Hopelink’s five holiday gift rooms.

Demand is high again this year, but Hopelink offi-

cials say that shelves are nearly bare at some centers and toys are badly needed.

Donations can be dropped off at any Hopelink Center through Friday, Dec. 14. Centers in Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland and Sno-Valley also are open limited hours on Saturday, Dec. 15 to accept donations.

Hopelink’s Kirkland/Northshore Center is located at 11011 120th N.E. and can be reached at 425-889-7880.

Toys and gifts are needed for all ages – as well as warm clothes, sweatshirts and sports clothing.

Items range from Fischer Price and Baby Einstein toys for tots, to Justin Bieber-themed dolls and cosmetics and Xbox games for teens.

Hopelink President and CEO Marilyn MasonPlunkett said the holiday gift rooms provide a few brief moments when kids are able to just be kids.

“Oftentimes, the gift a child receives through one of our gift rooms is the only new toy they will be given all year,” she said.

Navigating the flu season While most of us are out and about doing our gift shopping, attending parties, going on vacations or visiting loved ones, we are also increasingly at risk of falling prey to the countless health hazards we encounter in public places – most commonly a cold or the flu. Against widespread opinion, foul weather and cold temperatures have little to do with our heightened chances of catching something this time of the year. It’s rather our being in crowded places like shopping malls, restaurants and airports that causes our undoing.

The flu season starts in October and lasts through April, which happens to coincide with the school

year rather than changes in temperature, said Dr. Jon Abramson, a specialist in infectious disease at Wake Forest Baptist Health, North Carolina, in an interview with ABC News/ Health. He points to studies that have shown how the flu spreads mostly from school-age children who are in close physical contact with one another and who subsequently pass it on to adults. That can happen in any climate zone, including where it’s warm all year round.

Getting vaccinated against the flu and other contagious diseases such as whooping cough is certainly advisable, although there is no guarantee that you will escape the entire flu season unscathed. Studies found that flu shots are effective only about 60 percent of the time, but are still considered the best defense we have available today. The reason for the mixed success rate is that there are literally hundreds of strains of the flu virus.

Vaccines offered to the public are geared towards the most common types that are in seasonal circulation.

And those change constantly, making a catch-all approach impossible. Also, even after vaccination, the body needs some time to

build-up enough antibodies to fend off infections, which can take several weeks.

Sometimes, it can then already be too late.

Besides frequent hand washing, health experts also recommend adherence to a highly nutritious diet, exercise and sufficient amounts of sleep to strengthen the immune system. It is also important not to get too paranoid in our efforts to stay healthy. Ultimately, we can only do so much to protect ourselves and stay functional at the same time.

woman who is suing the Bothell Mayor claims she stayed overnight with him during a council-related business trip in Olympia during their two-year affair.

A former employee of the North Creek Law Firm, Micaela Mae, 23, filed a civil lawsuit on Oct. 29 against the business, Mayor Mark Lamb and his wife Kim, for wrongful termination and invasion of privacy in connection with the affair.

In an answer to the complaint, Lamb admitted to a sexual relationship with the woman but denied most other claims in Mae’s suit.

In a counterclaim, the Lambs requested that the suit be dismissed and Mae pay all court and attorney fees. They also asserted that Lamb’s position as mayor was “of no consequence.”

However, a judge denied that motion during a Nov. 15 hearing and ruled in the plaintiff ’s favor.

“We expect the evidence to show that Mr. Lamb’s duties and conduct as Mayor of Bothell and his law firm North Creek are inextricably linked,” said Mae’s attorney Howard Hall in a Nov. 13 response to Lamb’s counterclaim.

Hall also said they expect

the evidence to show that while most of their encounters occurred in the workplace, on at least one occasion while Mae was employed by Lamb, she went to Olympia and stayed overnight with Lamb, who was attending an annual conference of Washington elected officials in his capacity as mayor.

Both Hall and Lamb’s attorney, Christine Slattery, declined to comment.

Mae and the mayor’s relationship began in 2010 when the woman was working at Masala Bar and Grill in Bothell. According to court documents, Lamb and another unidentified member of the Bothell City Council, ate dinner at Masala when Lamb allegedly met and obtained Mae’s phone number.

During the relationship Lamb suggested that Mae come work for his law firm, the documents continue.

He eventually offered to support her in attending Edmonds Community College’s paralegal program.

The woman eventually accepted the offer and began working at the North Creek Law Firm in November 2011 as an intern for $3,000 a month with the caveat that their personal relationship end, according to the complaint. Mae also allegedly told Lamb that

she intended to start seeing other men.

But Mae alleges that Lamb never paid her more than $1,500 a month and “had to beg to be paid.”

Lamb states in legal documents that Mae was a paid intern for the firm starting in November 2011 and was paid $1,500 a month but denies all other allegations.

In January, the two allegedly restarted their sexual relationship upon Lamb’s request, frequently having sex in Lamb’s office, the documents continue.

Mae states in the complaint that while she was employed at the firm, Lamb was more demanding and “asserted power and control over the situation.”

Lamb stated in court documents that the sexual relationship was “consensual.”

Their sexual relationship allegedly continued for months almost entirely in Lamb’s office during working hours.

In March, Mae decided to terminate the relationship. Later that month Lamb allegedly saw Mae printing out information on a person she was considering dating, which sparked a heated argument between the two. She was fired the next day when she returned to the office, the documents continue.

He said the suspect didn’t have enough time to steal anything from the boat and it didn’t appear he broke into other boats.

Kenmore police have seen several break-ins at the Northlake Marina in the past month, including two incidents on Nov. 12, when multiple boats were broken into.

During those incidents, someone broke into three boats and stole TVs, a plastic jar with money

and a computer monitor, amongst other items.

Scholarship recipient number 1,500 will be introduced next May 21 as the Northshore Scholarship Foundation launches its 29th year of operations this month to benefit collegebound graduates of Northshore’s four high schools.

The Foundation and its sponsors will award 67 scholarships in 2013 valued at $139,000. The Foundation is operated by the Rotary clubs of Northshore and Woodinville and the Kiwanis Club of Northshore.

The Foundation awarded 60 scholarships in 2012 valued at $128,500.

For academic year 201314, the Foundation has added four new scholarships to build on the total of more than $2 million in grants already provided to 1,499 recipients since 1984 when the Foundation was organized.

These include a $1,500 scholarship at Inglemoor High School to be given in memory of long-time Kiwanis members Frank and Jane Weed and the first

micide on Nov. 13. During the investigation, police found a glass mug with a Mariner’s logo on it on the kitchen counter with blood and bone fragments on the exterior.

Davidson was transported to Evergreen Hospital for psychiatric issues. Police later asked her why she was living with her mother in light of an outstanding no contact order between she and Lila. She replied, “I have nowhere else to live,” the documents continue. She added, “I took a chance at being there and I harmed her.”

Bail was set for $2 million on Oct. 31 at the Snohomish County District Court, due to the nature of the offense, the prior assaults and domestic violence convictions, the woman’s mental health issues and the likelihood she may commit a violent offense.

Davidson is expected to appear in Snohomish Superior Court on Jan. 4, 2013 for an order to set her trial date.

Greater Woodinville Chamber of Commerce scholarship of $1,500 available at Woodinville High School for a graduating senior or for an incoming student from Woodinville at Cascadia Community College or University of Washington Bothell. The chamber offers the grant as an “investment in the future business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators of our community.”

Deadline for graduating high school seniors is Feb. 4, 2013 and the deadline for those seeking renewal of a scholarship is April 1, 2013.

The Foundation manages 53 scholarship accounts established by community organizations and as family memorials. Its assets have grown through donations and investments from $5,661 in 1984 to $1.2 million as of June 2012.

ere are just a few tips to set yourself and your little ones up for a less-stressed visit to any relative’s or friend’s home.

Talk with your child about who you are visiting and what the rules will be at their home.

Set boundaries. For example, “do not take or touch things without asking first.”

• If your child is shy, remind them that if they get nervous they can always come find you or show them a quiet area of the house that they can hang out in. If your child tends to get overstimulated, you can come up with a plan with them about what steps they can take to calm down and what consequences will be if they become out of control.

• As soon as possible after arrival, take a house tour with the hosts. Ask them what the rules are about this and that and relay those rules to your child as you walk around.

• Show them where the bathroom is as well as how to turn on the lights. Many older homes have bathroom light switches outside of the bathroom, which could end up in a frustrating mess when a child cannot find the light to be able to see the toilet! Also, remind yourself to stay on routine with pottying with your little ones. It is very easy for us all to get caught up in the excitement of family and presents and realize too late that you forgot to remind your child to go potty.

• If staying overnight, show your children where they will be sleeping and where their belongings will be.

• Bring foods and snacks along that you know your child will eat. Of course we want them to try the food served, but have back-ups.

Viking boys hope to turn last year’s lessons into wins

he Inglemoor High School boys basketball team struggled last season, finishing the season with a 6-14 record. But the Vikings were in many of those 14 losses all the way down to the final buzzer, including some of the games against the toughest competition in the state.

In his 25th year as Inglemoor’s head coach, Greg Lowell hopes to turn those lessons into wins during the 2012-13 season.

His teams won the league title six times and advanced to the state title game in 1993, ultimately losing to Tumwater 33-7.

“Part of the fun of that game was that we got to play in the Kingdome,” said Naish, who noted that having his son and daughter there as a ball boy and ball girl made it even more special.

Naish said that he will miss planning and instructing with his four loyal assistant coaches, Jeff Skelly, Dave Allemeier, Ray Moody and Sam Merriman, who have been at the coach’s side his entire Viking tenure.

“I had the title of head coach but we all had a part of the head coaching,” said Naish.

Naish has given his professional life to the Inglemoor High School community.

He is also resigning as the school’s athletic director, a position he has held for 18 years.

“It was good being able to represent the school,” said Naish. “I thought it would be nice to have an athletic director that had coaching experience and understands the pressures of being a coach.”

The coach said the normal pressures of being a coach helped him make up his mind and contributed to the timing of his resignation.

“One of the things is that there is an accumulative effect over a long period of time,” said Naish. “To say that it didn’t have a part in my decision would be naive.

Some parents get upset over the color of socks that you wear but some have very legitimate concerns.”

A rough season with a 2-7 record didn’t help relations

with some parents.

“Dave (Allemeier) and I talked about (my retirement) last winter, so it wasn’t a quick decision,” said Naish.

“This year was frustrating for everyone.”

Naish began his career at O’Dea, coaching the team and teaching for five years at the school. One of his students was professional golfer Fred Couples.

“It was the economics,” said Naish about taking the job at Inglemoor High School. “My wife was pregnant at the time and wanted to be a stay-at-home mom.”

Naish said that there are two things that he will miss from coaching, his athletes and the community.

“When you have coached as long as I have, it is the kids,” said Naish, who will remain as a math teacher at the school. “Inglemoor is blessed with nice and gracious kids that do what you ask.”

Naish said that he keeps a list of all the kids who have played for him, from the star quarterback to the third stringers who were just happy to get on the field.

“You tend to forget individual games but you never forget the kids,” said Naish, who leaves as the state’s longest-tenured head football coach.

Rebecca Gail Coburn-Jones entered into eternal rest on October 7, 2012, after a long illness at Harbor View.

Gail was born September 29, 1952 in Florence, AL. Graduated from N.C. State university. Moved to Kenmore, WA with husband in 1978. Loving mother to 4 children, two of whom are adopted from Korea. Gail spent many years volunteering at Arrowhead elementary, doing classic books, being an art docent as well as teaching Sunday school. She also received the Golden Acorn Award.

Although she could not physically smile due to muscular dystrophy, her love and positive attitude shined through, touching everyone she met.

She is survived by her husband, Guy Jones, children, Bonnie, Nate, Mika, and Daniel. Mother, Lois Coburn and brother, Gary.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Lake Forest Park Civic Club December 9, 2012 for family and friends at 1:30pm.

The Bothell High School football team had an up and down season. It was ranked in the top 10 during the preseason. Then it lost its first three games and recovered to win the Crest Division title before being bounced from the playoffs during the second round.

But the team earned some high accolades when the All-KingCo Crest teams were selected.

To no one’s surprise running back Danny Wilson won Offensive Player of the Year, while Tom Bainter was selected as the Coach of the Year. Bothell’s Chase Madsen also won Lineman of the Year.

Wilson and Madsen were among eight players selected to the 4A All-KingCo Crest Division First Team Offense, including senior running back Darrin Laufasa, senior wide receiver Jared Berry, senior center Tyler Roberts, senior offensive guard Dylan Lindsey, senior offensive guard Nick Ombrellaro and senior kick returner Kizhan Proctor.

Inglemoor senior wide receiver Erik Strathy was also selected to the first team.

“He is a scorer and he can really shoot it,” said Lynch.

“He can score off the dribble and is really good at taking charges.”

Cedar Park will also get the services of senior guard Luke Saufferer, a 2011 transfer from Jackson High School, who was denied eligibility last season.

“We almost have too much depth and we have learned how to use it,” said senior co-captain Anthony Almeida. “We can also be too aggressive at times.”

But all the players have showed that they want the same thing out of this season.

“We return a lot of our guys,” said Scholten. “Everyone has put a lot of time and

he Cedar Park Christian boys basketball team has seen consistent regular season success during five years under head coach Adam Lynch.

Last year the team was just one win and a half-court shot from the state tournament. The team also posted an impressive 9-3 in-league record. But the Bothell team has not made the state tournament under Lynch, a fact that the players plan to rectify this season.

“We should have gone deeper into the postseason last year,” said Lynch. “We have a history of getting knocked out at districts. We are capable of doing it, all the pieces are there.”

“We played two tough tournaments and had a lot of success,” said Almeida.

Cedar Park will play four non-league games this season, including the Cactus Jam tournament in Arizona against bigger schools from around the country.

The team gets even more experience with an open gym to the community. The team plays pick-up games against adults.

But Lynch wants his players to learn more than how to get to state during this season.

“We want to teach life lessons through basketball,” said Lynch. “We want them to play hard and be unselfish. Our focus is to honor the Lord with our play. We always break our huddle with ‘for Him.’”

Emerald City League to the Nisqually League was big for Cedar Park Christian.

It elevates the team to the 1A level of play. For boys basketball, the move means tougher competition but a greater opportunity to show how good they can be.

“It is a tough league from top to bottom,” said Lynch.

The league includes Bellevue Christian, which won the state title last year, and top programs such as Cascade Christian, Seattle Christian and Eatonville.

But that regular season challenge might be what the team needs to progress through the post season.

“We want to place at state, finish in the top eight,” said senior forward and team cocaptain Evan Scholten.
