Give a gift that matters all year round T
his is, indeed, the season of giving. At this time, our thoughts are with those who were displaced or otherwise harmed by the devastating storm that struck the Northeast. This we know: Crisis — whether personal or regional — knows no bounds. And when crisis occurs, we get through it together. With relatively little time or money, you can make a big difference in the lives of others. Even $5 or a couple of cans of food, combined with donations from others, have an impact long after the holiday season has passed. Considering making a gift to a local non-profit this holiday season. You’ll be part of the local safety net. Bellringer Fund campaign Through the Bellringer Fund was founded in the 1940s by Frank and Mabel Raab as a way for neighbors to help each other during emergencies. The Poulsbo Noon Lions Club administers the fund for the Raab Foundation. The fund helps families avoid eviction, keep utilities turned on, and keep homes supplied with heating fuel. The fund also provides about 100 Christmas food baskets to local families.
Contributions to the Bellringer Fund can be delivered to The Herald, P.O. Box 278, Poulsbo, WA. 98370. Community meals Several non-profits and churches provide free meals to help meet local needs and build community relationships. Donations are welcome to ensure these programs can continue to meet local needs. For a list of community meals, visit www.nkfaithlink.blogspot.com. “A
nd the stockings were hung by the chimney with care …” OMG! The stockings! If you’ve been appointed as the Christmas elf to help Santa fill the stockings this year, take heart. We’ve got some great suggestions for you that will keep you from resorting to sample-sized shampoo and deodorant on that last minute Christmas Eve trip to the discount bonanza. And with these gifts in hand, you won’t have to settle for the old time “lookaround-the-house-for-anything” have-in-hand stuffers like oranges, apples, candy, coins or raiding Dad’s silver dollars. Instead, these local items will make everyone in your household smile on Christmas morning, and they won’t damage your holiday budget, either! All of these things can be found in North Kitsap and most are less than $15.
For him How about a colorful glass wine bottle cork made to look like his favorite NFL team’s helmet? It will sit atop a wine bottle and remind everyone where his football loyalties are. Or maybe a key chain complete with a flashlight bearing his favorite Major League Baseball team logo? Either would be perfect for that guy who loves to boast about “his team.” ($19 and $7, Chantilly by the Bay.) If Dad likes to cook, a great choice is a 5-ounce mini-bottle of Viking Hot

For the mom who likes to keep candles lit, some oneinch round and four-inch tall “skinny candles” in glass tubes. Hand-poured, soy-based and they burn clean. Scented with orange spice, vanilla and peppermint. ($7.95, Nancy’s Green Garden.) And to ease her stress later on Christmas Day when the relatives arrive, a wire head massager by Kikkerland. Just pop it out of the box, hold the wooden handle and let the wires encompass your head until the stress is less. ($3.99, Port Gamble General Store.)

The handy man in the house could use a WD 40 No-Mess Pen. It’s a pocket-sized pen filled with WD 40 for loosening up that keyhole, or stopping the squeaks in any old tool. The package says it all. “It goes where you want it
and nowhere else.” ($3.99, Henery Hardware.) If you have a gourmet kind of guy in the family, try a 4-inch tall skinny plastic tube of peppercorns, called a “one-handed pepper grinder.” Stick it in your pocket and have fresh pepper anywhere you go. ($10.99, Port Gamble General Store.) Dad could always use a small pair of Fiskars scissors, made from recycled materials. These scissors have a fine point for detail cutting and are only 5 inches
long. Couple with that a 4-in-1 Lutz combo screwdriver that’s the size of a writing pen with two sizes of flat and two sizes of Phillips heads. ($4.99 each, Cost-DoIt-Best Hardware.)

and salt. Add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture, and stir gently until well mixed. 3. Add chocolate chips and nuts. 4. Drop by spoonful on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until very lightly brown at edges, and slightly firm. Remove from oven, but let sit on pan for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.
T
hese holiday recipes are among the favorites of North Kitsap Herald and Kingston Community News staff members, their families and friends.
Balsamic Roasted Sweet Potatoes — Submitted by Sharon Allen, a resident of the Hood Canal area (and neighbor of Herald production manager Annie LaValle). Ingredients ¼ cup decent balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp packed dark brown sugar ¼ cup butter 1 tsp salt 3-4 large sweet potatoes peeled and chopped into 1/2-inch cubes Instructions Heat oven to 400 degrees. In large skillet bring vinegar and sugar to a boil. Reduce till sauce starts to thicken. Add butter and salt. Over medium heat mix till even. Place potatoes in pan and toss with sauce. Spread mixture into a baking pan and roast stirring occasionally till potatoes are slightly browned on edges, about 40 minutes. Serve immediately.
Pecan Salmon — Submitted by Megan Stephenson, North Kitsap Herald Ingredients 4 salmon fillets Sea salt Fresh ground pepper 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 tbsp. butter, melted 1 1/2 tbsp. honey or agave 1/4 c soft breadcrumbs 1/4 c finley chopped pecans
Pecan salmon. 2 tsp. fresh chopped parsley Directions Turn on the oven to 450 degrees F Sprinkle fish with salt and pepper Place skin-side down in lightly greased baking dish Combine breadcrumbs, pecans and chopped parsley in a bowl Combine Dijon mustard, butter and honey (or agave) in another bowl Brush mustard mix over fillets, then spoon over breadcrumb mix Bake for 10 minutes
Best-Ever Cutout Cookies “My grandma — who was Martha Stewart before Martha Stewart was Martha Stewart — liked these because they can be rolled over and over without losing quality. The real secret, though, is the icing. It’s not butter-based, which means it sets up hard enough to stack. And it’s really easy.” — Wendy Tweten, columnist, Kingston Community News. Turn oven to 350 degrees Makes about 2 dozen Ingredients Cream: 1 cup butter ½ cup sugar Add: 1 egg 2 teas. vanilla Directions Sift together: 3 cups flour ½ teas. baking powder 1/8 teas. salt Add gradually to butter

Best-Ever Cutout Cookies. mixture. On a lightly floured surface, roll some or all of the dough to desired thickness (1/4 to 1/8”?). Wield cookie cutters. Re-roll and cut until only little bits are left. Eat those. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes. Cookies shouldn’t brown. When cool, frost with Decorator’s Icing. Beat together: 2 cups powdered sugar ½ teas vanilla 1 to 2 tablespoons water until icing is fairly thick, but spreadable. (If it will pour slowly from the bowl, it’s about right) Icing can be tinted (paste or gel coloring is great) Add sprinkles, colored sugar, etc. before icing sets.
Cinnamon French Toast Casserole — Submitted by Tiffany Walker, North Kitsap Herald Ingredients 1/4 cup melted butter 2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing 5 eggs 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts if desire Powdered sugar & maple syrup for garnishing — if desired. Directions Pre-heat oven to 375. Melt butter and pour in un-greased 13x9 baking dish.
Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Separate cans of cinnamon rolls — set aside the icing for later. Cut each roll into pieces and add to buttered baking dish. ** If small cinnamon rolls cut into 1/4th or for large cinnamon rolls cut into 1/6th. In medium bowl beat eggs, heavy cream, cinnamon and vanilla until well blended. Pour over cut pieces of cinnamon roll. Sprinkle with pecans or walnuts if desired. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. When done, remove from oven and pour icing over the top. Garnish with powdered sugar, maple syrup or nothing at all.

columnist Denise Roundy, were a favorite at a recent KCN picnic. Ingredients 1 cup canned pumpkin 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 egg 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (that’s right, 1 TABLEspoon!) 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Directions 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar and vegetable oil. Add pumpkin, egg, and vanilla. Dissolve the baking soda with the milk and stir in to the pumpkin mixture. 2. Sprinkle those sweetly seasoned nuts in your salads 6. Sprinkle the savory seasoned nuts in your green beans dish 7. Spend the time after deadline with your family and friends 8. Use the homemade jams at breakfast when you have overnight visitors for Christmas morning Serves numerous friends and family with “holiday” flavors so you can get back to work the day after Thanksgiving with your leftover turkey sandwich, in time for the next press deadline.

10 holiday conversation landmines to avoid By DEBRA FINE
Special to the Holiday Guide
T
hanksgiving can mean the ideal family gettogether or a day of awkward moments, uncomfortable silences and eruptions of family feuds. Here are my Top 10 Conversation Landmines: 1. “Are you two ever going to get married?” Most of us mothers (I am guilty, too!) along with the rest of the planet presume that long-time dating results in marriage. It ain’t necessarily so! And for those young people at the table already blissfully wed: “When are you two going to make me a grandmother?” is another conversation landmine. Back off! If they wanted you to know their intimate intentions, they would be sure to send you a press release. 2. “I heard Sarah got into Northwestern … why in the world is she going to Michigan State instead?” Maybe the economy has put a damper
on attending private institutions. Got a problem with the Spartans (that’s Michigan State’s football team for those who won’t be talking about sports at their own dinner table)? 3. “No, thanks. I gave up drinking after I saw the toll it took on you.” This is meant to deliberately point a finger. If you must address someone’s over indulgence, do it in private! And making someone feel bad about him- or herself does not typically motivate better behavior. 4. “Why did you two leave that beautiful home for this?” APR and no-interest loans created a housing crisis for all, not just those strangers you read about in the newspapers. Remember what Mom always said: if you have nothing nice to say … don’t say anything! 5. “I knew your candidate did not stand a chance; what do you have to say for yourself now?” Stop gloating. There are
Be careful how you phrase that question during dinner. ClipArt.com
plenty of people who are eating turkey after the election, so there’s no need to rub it in. We are all in this together. 6. “Aren’t you full yet?” or “Why aren’t you eating anything?” Leave us alone about what we eat or don’t eat, and worry about what you put in your own mouth. Just because eating at the
holiday dinner table is a marathon of gorging for some, it may be an Olympic feat of discipline for others. Also, just because you slaved over the pumpkin pie or prepared grandma’s traditional stuffing does not mean we are required to consume it. Eating is a personal decision! 7. “Yes, I know you’re a parent. But haven’t you ever thought about working?” Is this just a reflection of the Mommy wars? Whether someone chooses to work outside of the home or stay at home with their
kids it is their choice, and we should respect that choice and instead show a genuine interest in her with appropriate questions such as: “What are the challenges of staying at home with kids today?” or “Describe a typical day…” or “What keeps you busy outside of work/home?” 8. “I see you still can’t be bothered with ironing a shirt.” Leave him alone. His priorities are not the same as yours. Appreciate the fact that he wore a nice button down shirt! 9. “How is it that your son looks just like you and your daughter looks like she could be from a different family?” Personal questions that you do not know the answer to are never a good idea. Other examples include: “Did your son graduate?” and “How is the boyfriend?” and “Did she go to prom?” 10. “Did you cook this yourself, or did you just thaw it out?” You may be asking because you sincerely
wish to know how you can create this dish yourself, but you are putting the host/ hostess on the spot. Instead, ask for the recipe after the meal. If it was not homemade, she will let you know at that time, or maybe she’ll be coy and say that the recipe is a family tradition not shared outside the family! There are so many safe topics to discuss at the holiday dinner table. They include: best movies of the year, favorite gift received or given, best childhood holiday memory, etc. So why risk stepping on a conversational landmine when you can mine your own holiday gathering for great small talk and meaningful connections that will last beyond the season – and well beyond the new year? — Debra Fine is author of “The Fine Art of Small Talk: How to Start a Conversation, Keep It Going, Build Networking Skills — and Leave a Positive Impression” (Hyperion).

Local authors wrote the perfect gift for you By SUZANNE DROPPERT Special to the Herald
W
e have many talented authors residing in the Pacific Northwest, but Kitsap County in particular is home to some amazing writers. While some of these authors have numerous works under their belts, the ones featured here are their latest books. With each book I’ve included a review posted by a book critic at www. idreambooks.com. Kristin Hannah’s latest novel, “Home Front,” is set in Poulsbo and deals with a mother — a Blackhawk helicopter pilot — who gets deployed to Iraq. Having to leave behind two young daughters and her husband, Joleen attempts to juggle her relationships and her career — something has to give. “The blockbuster bestselling author of ‘Night Road’ and ‘Firefly Lane’ delivers a masterful novel that explores the sacrifices of one American family and illuminates the true cost of honor, duty and love, offering an intimate look at the inner landscape of a disintegrating marriage and a dramatic examination of the price of war.” Jonathan Evison has just come out with his third novel, “The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving.” It is a fascinating tale of a broken man, Benjamin Benjamin, who is in search of meaning in his life when he becomes
the caretaker of a 19-yearold boy with muscular dystrophy. Also set in Poulsbo, the two embark on a road trip that neither will soon to forget. “After a great loss, a teenager with muscular dystrophy and his caregiver venture out in a hair-raising road trip across the American West, in this lively, soulful novel that ponders life’s terrible surprises and the heart’s ability to heal.” Suzanne Selfors is a very talented author who has released numerous children’s and youngadult tales. Her newest novel is “The Sweetest Spell,” a lovely, magical and excited book for the young adult genre. “Scorned in her Flatlands village because of a deformed foot, Emmeline Thistle's life changes when she is taken in by Wanderlands dairy farmers and discovers her magical ability to make chocolate, which is more precious and rare than gold or jewels in the kingdom of Anglund.” Another great Kitsap author is Dylan Tomine. His book “Closer to the
Ground: An Outdoor Family’s Year on the Water, in the Woods and at the Table” is an autobiographical tale of Tomine and his family as they spend a year hunting, foraging and enjoying all the Pacific Northwest has to offer. “ ‘Closer to the Ground’ is the deeply personal story of a father learning to share his love of nature with his children, not through the indoor lens of words or pictures, but directly, palpably, by exploring the natural world as they forage, cook and eat from the woods and sea. With illustrations by Nikki McClure. “This compelling, masterfully written tale follows Dylan Tomine and his family through four seasons as they hunt chanterelles, fish for salmon, dig clams and gather at the kitchen table,
mouths watering, to enjoy the fruits of their labor. ‘Closer to the Ground’ captures the beauty and surprise of the natural world — and the ways it teaches us how to live — with humor, gratitude and a nose for adventure as keen as a child’s. It is a book filled with weather, natural history and many delicious meals.” One of Kitsap’s most famous authors is Debbie Macomber. Her newest novel, “The Inn at Rose Harbor,” is another wonderful read. “A heartwarming new series based in the Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, where a charming cast of characters finds love, forgiveness and renewal behind the doors of the cozy Rose Harbor Inn.” Another one of Kitsap’s most famous authors is
Gregg Olsen. His truecrime novels have been featured on national shows such as Dateline, and now he has debuted his first Young Adult series. The Empty Coffin series takes place in Port Gamble, and Olsen has just released the second book in the series, “Betrayal.” “In this action-packed thriller sequel to ‘Envy,’ foreign exchange student Olivia Grant is stabbed to death after a party — and the prime suspect is her best friend. As twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan are pulled into the aftermath of the crime, they realize nothing is what it seems.” Randall Platt’s newest novel is “Liberty’s Christmas.” It is a fabulous young-adult read that will capture the hearts of young and old. Platt has written
numerous adult and youngadult stand-alone novels and series. “The story of Liberty Justice Jones, a 16-year-old girl living on a Christmas tree farm in Depression-era Texas. When hard times fall on the family, it's up to Liberty to risk everything to save the farm and realize her dreams.” We normally carry a lot of the latest works by local authors and will have most of these books on hand and autographed at Liberty Bay Books this holiday season. If we don’t have the book you’re looking for when you stop in, we would happy to order it for you. — Suzanne Droppert is owner of Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo.
