Whidbey Island’s Local Voter Guide On behalf of Whidbey Island’s three community newspapers, I’m pleased to present the Whidbey Island 2012 Voter Guide.

A few years ago, the Island County Auditor’s Office decided it could no longer afford to spend taxpayer dollars to produce a printed voter guide. As a result, voters have had to turn to the Internet to read the statements submitted by candidates to the Washington Secretary of State’s Office.

This year, in an effort to provide voters with easy access to information about the races and the local ballot measure on the Nov. 6 ballot, we have compiled the statements submitted by candidates and presented them in printed form. This guide will be distributed to readers of our newspapers well as at libraries throughout Whidbey Island.

The outcome of elections affects the future of our community. Please take the time to read through each statement, and make sure you return your ballot to the Island County Elections Office by Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Rick Larsen (Prefers Democratic Party) ELECTED EXPERIENCE: It is my privilege to serve as the Representative for Washington’s 2nd Congressional District.

I’ve also served on the Snohomish County Council.

Other Professional Experience: Prior to working as a public official I was employed by the Port of Everett and the Washington State Dental Association.

Education: I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in Washington state and have a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

Statement: I was born and raised in Arlington. My mom and dad raised me with the values I now teach my own children:

community, service and commitment. These values are what motivate me each day on your behalf.

The choice in this election is stark. Some want to slash government by hollowing out Medicare, and defaulting on our obligations to our children – all while delivering huge new tax cuts for the highest earners. That’s not a reflection of the values I learned, and it is not what made America great. The United States didn’t get to be the world’s leader in innovation by accident. We invested in education to have the best workers. We built our infrastructure to provide the founda-

tion for economic growth. And we decided that it is to all our benefit if our retirees have Social Security and Medicare so they can live healthy and independent lives.

We need to rebuild the middle class. We need to see the label Made in America again.

I fought to make sure the new Air Force tanker is built here in the Puget Sound by the best aerospace workers in the world. I created an export promotion program to help our businesses find new customers overseas and create more jobs here at home. And I worked with the Navy to make sure that a new aircraft carrier was brought to Naval Station Everett.

Our work is not done. We need to expand our educational opportunities to make sure we retain the best aerospace workforce. We need to help with job opportunities for our veterans returning from Afghanistan. And we need to rebuild our aging roads, bridges, highways, ferries and transit systems. I ask for your vote so I can continue bringing your voice and our Northwest values to our nation’s capital.

Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider and Elections Office staff have received numerous calls and emails from registered voters concerned about their voter registration because they received a card, call or email indicating they may not be registered. A great deal of misinformation is circulating regarding voter registration. To dispel these inaccuracies, Auditor Crider is encouraging voters to get the facts and know the status of their registration.

Voters who have concerns or questions about their registration can verify their registration online at: www.islandcounty. net, Elections, MYVOTE or www.myvote. wa.gov. Be sure to enter the name used when originally registering to vote (if you had a name change, use the new name if your voter registration was changed). The correct voter registration information is readily available online.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS Levy Lift Proposition The Board of Fire Commissioners of South Whidbey Fire/EMS, a fire protection district, adopted Resolution No. 2012-10 concerning a proposal to increase its regular property tax levy.

If approved, this proposition would authorize the District to exceed the 1% property tax increase limitation by increasing the levy rate from approximately $.61 to $.76 per $1,000 of assessed valuation for the District’s 2012 regular property tax levy for collection in 2013, subject to any otherwise applicable dollar rate limitations.

Thereafter, such levy amount would be used to compute dollar levy limitations for subsequent years as allowed by chapter 84.55 RCW. Should this proposition be approved?

I fulfilled expectations for responsible government, planned growth, and increased transparency, while maintaining the core functions of law and justice, public health, clean water, transportation, and essential services for seniors, children and veterans. Job creation and stimulus efforts encouraged tourism, agriculture, infrastructure improvements, natural resource and heritage preservation, broadband access, renewable energy, boat building, and

the P-8A delivery to the Navy base.

I have been a Washington resident for 30 years, Whidbey Islander for 16, and wife of a naval aviator for 20. We raised our children here in Oak Harbor on beautiful Whidbey Island. My experience as an architect, machinist, carpenter, volunteer, and small business owner forged my ability to govern Island County. She was successful in getting additional state funds for the Island County CASA program. Through her efforts with the state Justice in Jeopardy Initiative, the state began paying part of district court salaries, thus returning money to Island County.

Judge Churchill strives for excellence in her personal and professional life.

She decides cases fairly, holds offenders accountable, and is highly respected as a judge.
