Wash. Archives Month highlights historic crooks, cops, and court cases Posted online Tues., Oct. 2 Image Courtesy Washington State Archives The Washington State Archives might not have every episode of the long-running TV series "Law and Order" in its collections, but it does have an extensive collection of legal and historical documents and photos featuring criminals, law enforcement and courts in Washington. This collection provides the theme for the state's sixth annual Archives Month this October. This year's official theme is, "Law & Order In The Archives: Crooks, Cops and Courts." The monthlong event, part of a national celebration, is co-sponsored by the Washington State Archives, a division of the Office of Secretary of State. Throughout October, the public is encouraged to explore, free of charge, millions of items through the State Archives and its Digital Archives, historical societies, museums, public libraries, and university special collections. "Here in Washington, there are interesting stories about criminals -- some notorious -- and the admirable efforts of our law enforcement and courts to bring them to justice," said Secretary of State Sam Reed. "Thanks to our State Archives, an enormous number of documents related to crime, cops and courts are preserved for the public to see, and it's exciting to make this collection this year's Archives Month theme. "I encourage people to go to one of the Archives events this month and learn how to explore a part of Washington history or even their own family roots," Reed added. State Archivist Jerry Handfield says the State Archives, which is heavily utilized by lawyers, government employees, history buffs and genealogists, plays a crucial role in preserving Washington history. "Thanks to our main State Archives office in Olympia and our branches throughout Washington, people now and in the
future can learn about the people, events and stories that make up the fabric of our state's interesting past. Whether it's a famous Washingtonian or someone's own family history, Archives can help direct you toward the documents and resources that will help you in your search," Handfield said. All 31 days in October are devoted to helping the public appreciate and better understand the legal and historical records that protect people's rights and property, and keep government accountable and open, said Handfield, who added that Archives Month is an opportunity to learn how to preserve personal records and how to use public records to enrich people's everyday lives. "Our criminal records, law enforcement records, court records and photos make up only a small percentage of the documents found in the State Archives," said Handfield, noting that Archives has photos, records and documents on many different subjects. "Our records on marriages, divorces, naturalization and crime can help you unlock family mysteries. You can even find a horse-thief in our Frontier Justice records that document all the court cases in the territorial era of 1853 to 1889. We have the know-how
to help you research any aspect of Washington history, or your own personal history." The State Archives is distributing free copies of this year's Archives Month poster. The posters are available for free thanks to a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The posters will be available by the second week of October in the Office of Secretary of State, located on the second floor of the Legislative Building in Olympia, and at the State Archives Building, located at 1129 Washington St. SE in Olympia. The posters also will be found in the Regional Archives branches in Bellevue, Bellingham, Cheney and Ellensburg. Supplies are limited. People are encouraged to attend one of the free events and workshops being held throughout Washington in conjunction with Archives Month. More information is online at sos. wa.gov/archives/month. The State Archives houses nearly two-billion legal and historical items and is the home for the nation's first Digital Archives (located on the Eastern Washington University campus in Cheney), which preserves electronic records in an award-winning online database that is used by thousands of people every day.

Port of Tacoma News
Posted online Tues., Oct. 2 Port of Tacoma commission to consider industrial development, habitat restoration The Port of Tacoma Commission is scheduled this week to consider a request for design work to prepare a Port-owned property for future industrial development and habitat restoration. The Port intends to restore about 18 acres of habitat on the site in advance of future development. The habitat work would include restoring Wapato Creek to a more natural meandering stream. The remaining 100 acres of the site are expected to be prepared for new business opportunities, as well as accommodate the extension of State Route 167. Commissioners will also consider a request for additional design work to upgrade Terminal 3. The work is the next step in preparing Terminals 3 and 4 to serve the larger container ships expected to call the Port in the future. The Port of Tacoma Commission will discuss these issues during its meeting on Thurs., Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. in Room 104 of The Fabulich Center, 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. New WSDOT site aims to boost opportunities for small-business owners Posted online Mon., Oct. 1 Small-business owners have a new tool to help position their company to work on state contracts and projects. To encourage and support small businesses, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) recently launched a new Website, "Small Business Opportunities," available online at wsdot.wa.gov/Business/opportunities/ default.htm. The site offers how-to help specifically for small businesses seeking work as contractors, subcontractors, consultants and vendors. It's just the first step in a new program, to be fully implemented by spring 2013, that encourages prime contractors to award 10 percent of their transportation project to small businesses. "We support equal opportunities in the transportation job market and this will hopefully help small businesses' efforts to get their foot in the door," said Director Brenda Nnambi, WSDOT Office of Equal Opportunity. "They're an important part of our communities and help contribute to our state's economic recovery. We want to see them succeed." The U.S. Department of Transportation recently approved WSDOT's Small Business Enterprise Program plan. The plan sets a voluntary goal for prime contractors to use qualified small businesses and allows WSDOT to establish a roster of pre-qualified small businesses for contracts of up to $35,000. To implement the plan, WSDOT will be working with the Legislature and small businesses over the next few months to ensure the program meets the needs of those desiring to work on state transportation projects.

HELP FIGHT HUNGER FISH FOOD BANKS OF PIERCE COUNTY
• Volunteer your time. • Donate money or stock. •Coordinate a food drive at your office, school, place of worship or social club. • Make a donation in someone’s name. • Designate FISH Food Banks through your workplace giving program.
Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food Banks Last year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wage of $7.16 it would have cost $332,260. The FISH volunteers sent food home for more than 186,000 individuals last year and deserve a hugh THANK YOU from the Board of Directors, staff and community. The families needing food can now concentrate on other aspects of their lives such as finding a job or getting training without the pains of hunger. FISH could not have made such a huge difference in our neighborhoods without you! If you wish to help FISH please call 253-383-3164 and we will direct you to a food bank. NEEDS
FOR MORE INFORMATION, TO DONATE OR TO VOLUNTEER, CALL 253-383-3164. P.O. Box 99847, Lakewood WA 98499 Email: fishfoodbanks@harbornet.com
A new location for a food bank is needed. Currently one of our food banks is located at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Trinity was very kind to let us utilize their church on a temporary basis, one and a half years ago, and now we need a larger location. If anyone knows of a location with about 1,000 sq ft from South 25th to North 25th and from Yakima to the Sound please give FISH Central a call at 383-3164.
