King County Senior Services

S

enior Services is the most comprehensive non-profit agency serving older adults in King County. Established in 1967, the organization promotes positive aging for thousands of local seniors and helps them live empowered, connected, and meaningful lives. Through an integrated system of programs and senior centers, Senior Services provides older adults with food, transportation, legal rights assistance, fitness and wellness training, home repairs, educational classes, and other critical services. Here are some of Senior Services key programs: Meals on Wheels provides nutritious, homedelivered meals to homebound adults who are unable to shop or prepare meals for themselves. The meals are delivered right to a senior’s home by compassionate, caring drivers. Clients can choose from 36 different meals that are low-sodium and low-fat, including vegetarian, suitable for renal diets, and Kosher. Each meal makes up one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for seniors. If you or someone you know could benefit from having meals delivered, call (206) 448-5767. Volunteer Transportation More than 600 volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to transport and accompany seniors to medical and other essential

appointments throughout King County. The volunteers provide not only a ride, but the extras that mean so much to an older adult… holding doors open, lending a steadying arm, providing companionship and security. There is no charge for this service, but the program invites each rider to make a donation. To schedule a ride, call (206) 448-5740.

Hyde Shuttles

Need to go shopping? Have a doctor’s appointment? Want to visit a senior center? Give Hyde Shuttles a call. Friendly, helpful drivers provide door-to-door, round-trip service throughout King County in lift-equipped vans. There is no charge for this service, but donations are welcome. To schedule a ride, call (206) 727-6262.

Minor Home Repair

Skilled repair technicians make minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical repairs, and install wheelchair ramps, grab bars and handrails to keep older adults safe in their homes. This service is available to homeowners of all ages in Seattle, Bellevue and Shoreline, who meet income eligibility requirements. To find out more, call (206) 448-5751.

Senior Information & Assistance

If you are a senior or are caring for an older person, there are many services in Seattle and King County available to assist you. However, finding the right resources can be frustrating if you don’t know who to call. Trained advocates help seniors and their families understand the maze of services, and provide unbiased advice on consumer, homeowner, retirement, health insurance, and other old age related issues. Call (206) 448-3110 or e-mail info@seniorservices.org. Client information is kept confidential. Alternative to CPAP Therapy

“The most common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) involves the use of a medical breathing device called a CPAP, “ said Doneskey. CPAP, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure, delivers air through a mask worn over the nose during sleep in order to help maintain an open airway. While CPAP can provide an effective solution, Doneskey reports that there are significant reasons why some people are unwilling or unable to use CPAP. “For example, restless sleepers often report having difficulty with getting comfortable and keeping

the mask on during the night. Others may have trouble keeping a seal around the mask and must use head straps to keep their mouth closed while asleep,” said Doneskey.

their sleep. This appliance is so well received that according to Doneskey, more than 90 percent of his patients over the last 5 years are able to use The Silent-Partner on a full time basis.

According to Doneskey, patients also express lifestyle concerns such as the inconvenience of taking CPAP along when they travel or go on vacation.

Cyber Safety

O

ctober is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, making it an excellent time to talk with your aging loved one about staying safe while online.

According to the FBI’s Scams & Safety Web page, seniors are highly targeted by scammers of all kinds because they are widely expected to have a nest egg saved up, own their own house and have excellent credit. Because children in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s were taught to be polite and trusting, scammers also expect older generations to be easier targets. Many scammers think seniors are even easier targets online because they did not grow up with today’s technology like younger generations did, and therefore scammers don’t think they will be as savvy about Internet safety and risks. Seniors are also less likely to report scams. They either do not know who to report a scam to, or they are simply embarrassed. Whatever the reason, this tendency also puts seniors at higher risk. The best way to protect your loved one from scammers is to educate him or her about what to look for. Here are three of the most common phishing scams targeting seniors, as listed by AARP:

Sound Publishing | 2012 SENIOR HOUSING AND HEALTH FAIR

For Seniors

Scams using the name of well-known companies, like Microsoft These emails claim to represent a well-known company and may even look very much like the company by using company identifiers such as logos. These emails will make some sort of claim as a precursor to asking for personal information, such as your logon password. Scams that say you have won a lottery These emails will tell you that you have won a lottery, even though you did not enter one. They may try to align with a well-known company to try to look credible. Again, these emails will make a claim to try to get personal information from you—such as that they need your bank account number to deposit your winnings.

Scams that pretend to be security software Also known as “scareware,” rogue security software claims to be effective security software, but does not actually protect the computer. Often, the software actually causes false security alerts—or worse, will lead you to make fraudulent transacCaregivers And Nursing Services In Your Home tions to gain personal RN/MSW Supervision information or take your Geriatric Care Management money.

Seniors, like all Internet users, will also benefit from general computer security practices such as using antivirus software, setting up a firewall, and

never opening emails from unknown addresses or following links to unknown sites. The Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month website offers even more information about computer safety basics. “Make sure your loved one knows that if they are scammed, they can come to you for help without fear of being judged,” said Ben Solomon, Owner of Right At Home Bellevue. “Many seniors do not report fraud because they worry that their friends and family may think they are no longer able to look after themselves.” To report a scam, contact the FBI or submit a report online through the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The Internet has predators, but it doesn’t mean seniors shouldn’t use it. “There is risk in everything we do. If we travel by airplane, we know that there is a small chance that the plane can experience engine trouble or worse,” as explained by Norton in its “Cyber Safe Seniors” guidebook. “If you follow some general rules and guidelines … you will find the Internet a non-scary, fun, and enchanting place to visit.”

No conflicts of interest; 4. All senior service providers are licensed, bonded, and insured. Among the services a senior service coordinator will be able to help you with are issues

Proper nutrition key for elderly (ARA) - Americans are now living longer than ever before. In fact, one of the fastest growing segments is people over the age of 85 who will represent 20 percent of the population by the year 2040. Because we are living longer, certain conditions specific to senior citizens are also on a steady rise. Dehydration, falls, fractures, cognition loss and attention deficits are now becoming more commonplace. In a recent paper titled “Salt Appetite Across Generations” presented at a medical conference in Switzerland, Israeli researchers from the University of Haifa confirmed that in older people, a reduced sense of thirst results in a greatly

in the middle of this range.

increased risk of serious dehydration. They also noted that the appetite for salt does not diminish with age and suggested that this be used to help sustain hydration and prevent the dangerous symptoms that result from dehydration. Another study by Dr. Michael H. Alderman and Dr. Hillel W. Cohen of the

Albert Einstein College of Medicine, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, identified significant risks to cardiovascular health and longevity from consuming any less than one or more than three teaspoons salt per day. Fortunately, most Americans - including the elderly - when left to their own choice consume right

Given this new evidence, assisted living caregivers should be very cautious before recommending a low-salt diet for the elderly. In older people, mild hyponatremia is the most common form of electrolyte imbalance in the blood. Indeed, several recent medical papers found a direct relationship between hyponatremia and unsteadiness, falls, bone fractures and attention deficits.  Falls are one of the most serious problems for the elderly and about a third

and more. Even when needs are immediate, a senior service coordinator can work with you - at your pace - to put a plan into place. For more information on establishing an aging plan or available senior services, contact Mike or Mindy Garner with ElderMove Alliance at

of people older than 65 fall at least once every year. Fall-related injuries in the elderly are associated with numerous psychological and physical consequences and are a leading cause of bone breakage and hip fractures, which can lead to complications and permanent disability or death. More than 5 percent of all hospitalizations in people older than 65 years are due to fall-related injuries. Sadly, the research shows that in assisted living facilities where almost all residents are given low-salt diets, the rate of falls and fractures are three times as great as in the normal home environment.

Evidence clearly points to significantly increased attention deficits, loss of cognitive function, increased falls and fractures - a cascade of conditions resulting in a highly diminished quality of life and a reduced life span. It is a major threat that can be treated by simply adding salt back to the diet.

The implications of this research for liability claims incorporating legal damages are considerable. Mild hyponatremia in the elderly can no longer be considered as a simple nonthreatening condition.

The evidence contradicting a low-salt regimen for the elderly is impressive and up-to-date. Those responsible for looking after the elderly should very carefully consider any broad, sweeping recommendations to administer a low-salt diet, for both medical and liability reasons. A wellbalanced diet, complete with salads, vegetables and fruit is the best approach to ensuring a healthy and active retirement.
