2012 VOTER ACCESSIBILITY PROGRAM Your Vote, Your Voice!

The Voter Accessibility Program, for Island, San Juan, Skagit & Whatcom Counties, wants to spread the word that we will help eliminate barriers that may impact eligible voters’ access to either register or to vote due to some disability that they have. Regardless of disability, as long as the resident is eligible to vote in Washington State, our goal is to assist them so they may fully participate in our democracy. The Perfect Game

the shortest distance “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

By Roxann Dunn-Terry When the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars, it is the dawning of the Perfect Day. The only problem? You sometimes don’t know it is the Perfect Day until nearly the end. It may even start out with a few hiccups.

It was Wednesday, August 15. The Washington State Association of Senior Center’s Annual Mariner Game. One of the few trips I escort each year. It’s a chance for me to see some of my buddies from other Senior Centers as we bring

our people to the game. It started off with 20 people from our Center and it grew to 40. I was able to get more tickets.

Yeah! Then I started my annual search for Cracker Jacks. What’s a baseball game without Cracker Jacks? Someone wondered where the peanuts were. I was tempted to tell him to look in the Peanut Gallery. It took three stores for me to get enough. Second Yeah! Sunny day. Third Yeah! Mr. Volunteer takes me down to meet the bus and hands me the bags of Cracker Jacks. Loading up the bus but have to wait. Two people haven’t shown. Do roll call. They are already on the bus. Yeah! Get off on time. Yeah!

Oh no! 40 people and only 32 boxes of Cracker Jacks. Uh-oh. Minus one Yeah. Guess Mr. Volunteer’s math is off.

New Bus Driver. He’s from Spokane.

He doesn’t know Seattle. Never driven there. Uh-oh. But he does get us there in plenty of time. Uh-oh is now Yeah!

Great seats in the Terrace Club. Games

start. This is where I learn again that I’m in the right place at the right time and I’m not even aware of it. Game starts. I sit there. Through five innings wondering how much more boring can this game get? Every time Tampa Bay comes up to bat, one, two, three, Alex strikes them out. Where’s the action” When is this going to get interesting. We finally get some of our guys on base and then a home run. OK, Please God just don’t let the Mariner’s loose. I want my people to see a winning game. What an understatement. (The Mariners Had lost two games before this one. I go to the little girls room and hear the announcer.

That’s my first clue that something big is in the works. I almost thought of staying there so I could hear the step-bystep plays. I go back to my seat. People are excited. Could it? Will it? Another Tampa Bay inning and Felix strikes them out, one, two, three. Excitement grows.

Again Tampa Bay, struck out. People are starting to stand up, shouting. It’s

the eighth. Tampa Bay, one, two, three, once again, Felix strikes them out. Uhoh. Tampa Bay Head Coach isn’t happy with Felix. He doesn’t like the curve ball Felix threw. Umpire rules too bad, it’s in the Strike Zone. The player either tries to hit it or he’s calling a Strike.

Head Coach is escorted off the field and put in time out for arguing. Everybody is on their feet. Everyone is screaming.

It is unbelievable. It’s the bottom of the ninth. Will he? Can he? Yes. Yes he does and the stadium goes wild. No one is leaving early. Nobody wants to leave.

We have seen Felix Hernandez, pitch the 23rd Perfect Game ever pitched in Major League History! On the bus I call the Center on my cell phone and the bus explodes into cheers. Then we call Mike in his office and cheer. Finally we’re off for home. The perfecting ending for a Perfect Day. And to think I almost fell asleep because it started off as one of the most boring games I’ve ever seen.

Side note: When Mr. Volunteer picked me up he said he found a bag with Cracker Jacks in the back seat. Guess his math wasn’t off.

VETERAN’S DAY PARADE

The 1st Annual Oak Harbor Veteran’s Day Parade will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012. Any veteran’s group or veteran interested in participating, please call Event Coordinator Terry Lacey at (360) 672-8339. Entry forms are available at the Oak Harbor Senior Center.
