Discovering the best of the best on the Plateau By Dennis Box Editor

ou probably noticed The CourierHerald looks different this week – very different. This week the newspaper is celebrating the Best of the Plateau, including best pizzas, top burgers, places to shoot photos and some notable folks. This edition celebrates the top of the hill. The staff has been working on this edition for several months. It is the first time we have tried to focus an edition around a concept like the Best of the Plateau. Plateau-area businesses participated in
a “best of” contest with voters casting their ballots for top choices in many categories. The contest results begin on page 13. There are still news, sports and opinion articles, but we thought for one week we would try something different. The newspaper you are more familiar with will return next week, but expect to see a some of the “Best of the Plateau” stories continuing. When the editorial staff started trying to figure out what stories to write for this
edition, we had so many ideas the problem came in trying to pare it down to a manageable number. Many of my best ideas hit the editorial room floor with a loud crash, thanks to Brian Beckley and his companion in the evil empire, Valerie May, the creative wizard. While I am talking about the best I need to say, for the record, there is no better editorial staff than those sitting in this office. Kevin Hanson, Daniel Nash and (even) Beckley put out award-winning writing that keeps the

‘Take the Plunge’ fundraiser for domestic violence
City Council and Parks Board give a thumbs down on complex at Reed Property
By Brian Beckley Staff Writer
The third annual “Take the Plunge Against Domestic Violence” is scheduled for Oct. 27 at Allan Yorke Park. The event is a fundraiser for Exodus Housing of Sumner, an agency that works with victims of domestic violence. Participants collect money from donors and then promise to run, splash or jump into the chilly waters of Lake Tapps. Last year’s event drew dozens of people to the park, including East Pierce Fire and Rescue Chief Jerry Thorson, Deputy Chief John McDonald and Bonney Lake Interim Police Chief Dana Powers among other. The plunge raised approximately $7,500. Costumes are encouraged and there will be prize drawings during the event. Exodus Housing is a Sumner-based organization developed to provide transitional housing and supportive services for homeless families and victims of domestic violence in suburban and rural settings. Since 1994, Exodus has served families

The city is scaling back its proposal for a metropolitan parks district package after council members balked at a $6.5 million proposal for a new sports complex to be located on the Reed Property, just outside city limits. “The mayor is revising his proposal, scaling it back a little bit,” said Projects and Facilities manager Gary Leaf, who has been working with the Park Board on the project. The city is inviting residents to weigh in on the plan during what is being called Parks Summit II, Thursday at the Justice Center. The second summit is a follow-up to a

North Tapps: A photographer’s playground onth-to-month for our Community Click section, we see dozens of photos from area shutterbugs. Our most frequently run photographers experiment with different styles and set new goals for themselves month to month. So when asked for the best photo spot on the Plateau, the real answer is a shrug and an inquiring “What kind of picture are you trying to take?” That being said, in terms of sheer volume of entries, North Lake Tapps wins hands down. Why the popularity? We have some theories. The north side of the lake is open to the public via the county park and perfectly situated for accomplishing a number of photo types. Venture out on a clear day, and you’re treated to a straight-shot view of Mount Rainier, the bread and butter of landscape photos in Washington state. Even if the mountain is obscured, the shoreside trees and lake houses
PARKS FROM 3 similar summit in May and Mayor Neil Johnson will once again preside over an agenda that includes a review of possible park and field options, potential sites and the cost involved. Following the first summit, the mayor put forth a list of projects to include in a vote for a park district and bond, tentatively scheduled for April. Johnson’s $15.8 million proposal included several projects at the Reed Property, including the
sports complex, which consisted of multiple fields and bleachers and would be designed to host tournaments. But following discussions in August, the City Council and the Parks Board were not high on the idea for myriad reasons, primarily that the Reed Property, though owned by the city, is located in unincorporated county land, meaning the county would have control of the design and zoning of the projects. Other possible issue included the potential for archeological sites on the property as well as the
render the view breathtaking, summer or winter. Crystal clear glacier water reflects everything. It’s a beautiful effect on an average day and a real treat during the annual Independence Day fireworks display (not to mention the abundance of unauthorized displays that pepper the season, but catching one on camera requires a little luck). The locale also accommodates more intimate depictions of nature, be it a raft of ducks on the water or the waterside forest as the light hits it just so. Summer, now just behind us, is for action shots. Boaters flock to the water on sunny days (sometimes even overcast days) to cruise the lake; water skis and inner tubes are a common sight. They’re impressive shoreside, but the best shots of big wakes, sick jumps and (we’ll admit it) hilarious wipeouts can be had while shooting from the back of a speedboat. Just ask Janice Thomas. Every summer, the local photographer starts Christmas early and has her friends don Santa and Mrs. Claus costumes before riding the waves. potential for costly traffic mitigation, as the only route to the property is across two small county roads. Instead, Leaf said the mayor’s revamped proposal is set to include money to convert some of the city’s current fields to turf and expand other fields, such as Ballfield Four, located behind the overflow parking lot across from Allan Yorke Park, and “multipurpose grass field” at the Moriarty Property, a cityowned parcel adjacent to the park. Leaf said converting present fields costs approximately $700,000 each as
opposed to $1 million to build new ones. And while placing the complex in the city’s part of the former WSU forest was briefly discussed, Leaf said such a project would take up nearly all 23 acres and was therefore dropped from the plan. But while some projects have come off the list, at least one new proposal has been added: a ropes course and playground at the forest. Leaf said a display at Bonney Lake Days that included a mock-up of a ropes course drew heavy attention from attendees at

the event, drawing praise and excitement from nearly everyone. Council members were also excited by the course. Leaf said the ropes course and playground were added to the proposal at a cost of approximately $500,000. According to Leaf, the administration’s new proposal - with all Reed Property pieces removed - will total approximately $10.6 million, well below the original proposed cost of $15.8 million. Leaf said the parks district, if passed by voters,
would add approximately $100 per year to the tax bill of the average home, down from $122 as originally proposed. Parks Summit II is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Justice Center. t is always a source of amusement for me when I hear kids talk about what they are going to do when they “grow up,” or when parents mingle and discuss their child’s future career with absolutely certainty, as though it is something which should be determined at the tender age of 7. I remember the first thing I wanted to be in preschool was an astronaut, because I had, and TJ Martinell still hold, someGuest Writer what of a fascination with outer space. I am absolutely terrible at math, however, which obliterated that dream like a comet. So, I wanted to be a cowboy, like every true-blooded American boy at the age of 6. Then I wanted to become Robin Hood, because I liked the idea of taking my parents’ money, but then I discovered an institution called the IRS already did that. I can’t help but find a great deal of irony in the “what are you going to be?” questions people pose from time to time, because it’s absurd – unless you’re a fortune teller or a prophet. Executive power commonly misunderstood Government leaders are often criticized for the wrong reasons. Presidents, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are sometimes blamed for things that are beyond their control. Likewise, city mayors are blamed when they do not have the power to vote on issues that come before the council. This became obvious to me based upon the reactions of citizens to events while I was on the Enumclaw City Council. Part of this problem is that many people do not understand how government works. All elected government officials, whether they are the president of the United States or your local mayor in the strong mayor-council type of government, have very clear constraints placed upon them by the law. It is part of the checks and balances that have filtered down from the Constitution and from our history. Government is designed to be convoluted and inefficient. There are several reasons for this: first, the longer something takes, the more likely all the voices of those concerned with new legislation have to get their perspectives heard. This tends to make the law better thought out, reflecting the concerns of a broader electorate.
Politics in Focus Rich Elfers Columnist
A second reason for the lawmaking process to be so complex is to avoid abuse by a few powerful individuals. There are many legal restraints put upon any elected official that limit his ability to bring about rapid change to a government. Those constraints on the elected official’s power are meant to curb individuals using government power for their own ends. All presidents and government leaders have the power to persuade and influence thinking but, in order for a president to create jobs, for example, he needs the support of Congress. No president, whether Democrat or Republican, can arbitrarily mandate the creation of jobs. Laws have to be passed and money found to pay for them. Presidents are often blamed for things over which they have little
control. Let me quickly state I am not taking sides in the current election. If Congress is made up of members of a different party to the president, it is even more difficult to get laws passed to bring about change. In recent times, the opposing party doesn’t really want the president to be successful because they want a member of their party to become president. Making the opposite party’s president look bad becomes part of their job description, especially in an election year. Mayors are also constrained in what they can do. For example, the mayor of Enumclaw fired a police lieutenant for insubordination. This process took about a year and a half from start to finish. The administration just couldn’t fire the officer outright because police and fire employees are under what is called a protected class. The officer had the right to appeal to the Civil Service Commission, which he did. Finally, the mayor’s decision was upheld. Had the commission ruled in the officer’s favor, the city administration would have had to rehire that

Only afterward did she go back to school and begin teaching elementary in Seattle before finally finding her niche. Switching careers or degrees is nothing out of the ordinary. Most of the students I attended college with switched their majors at least once, if not three times. Why? Some of it is because too many young adults don’t know who they are and, consequentially, what they want to do with their lives. But a stronger reason is because there are too many factors which make up the fabric of life to determine what you’re going to do until you reach that point. For some, it takes years to realize. Others are fortunate and seem to be born with certainty of their fate and pursue it without any indecision. Two weeks into college I started writing to alleviate my restlessness which came from entering university where I did not know a single soul. Though

Even then, it was a happenstance which got me involved in the university student newspaper. When I got out of college, it took a long time for me to get into the newspaper industry, and a week before I got hired there was no indication it would occur in the near future. To this day, I accept the possibility that I may very well end up in a totally different profession when I am 30. In fact, this applies to life on the whole. No one can know what they are going to be a year from now. Predicting someone’s career is just like trying to predict any sort of future event. Most often, the prediction looks ridiculous compared to what takes place in the year given. The architects of the FTAA intend that it broaden and deepen NAFTA. Instead of the U.S., Mexico and Canada, which comprise NAFTA, the FTAA would broaden NAFTA by encompassing all the 34 nations of the western hemisphere, with the current exception of Cuba. It would deepen NAFTA by involving the FTAA in an ever-increasing number of functions that are properly the private domain of national governments. In 1993, Henry Kissinger lobbied for NAFTA by noting that NAFTA “is not a conventional trade agreement, but the architecture of a new international system.” The FTAA would be a further expansion of that architecture, with a shifting of control of government’s functions to unelected hemispheric bureaucrats. The appeal to “free trade” in the name chosen for this latest power grab is a blatant deception. Trade under the FTAA would be highly regulated by a socialist bureaucracy, even more so than with NAFTA. Americans should appeal to their representatives and senators to reject any agreement to expand NAFTA into an FTAA. Current plans are to complete the hemispheric agreement by January and then present it to Congress. For more information, check out www.stoptheftaa.org.

Doing this is cheaper and easier than going through multiple legal steps, both financial and political, and requires much less time. Being a government official at any level is a difficult job. There

Unfortunately, most highly-toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from the nontoxic ones, so the best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom. • In order to generate body heat, pets who exercise heavily outdoors, or who live outdoors, should be given more food during colder seasons. Pet owners should know what kinds of venomous snakes may be in their environment – and where these snakes are most likely to be found – so they can keep pets out of those areas. While we don’t have a large number of venomous snakes in this area, be aware when hiking or traveling in central or eastern Washington.
• Many people choose fall as the time to change their car’s engine coolant. Ethylene glycolbased coolants are highly toxic, so spills should be cleaned up immediately. Consider switching to propylene glycol-based coolants – though they aren’t completely nontoxic, they are much less toxic than other engine coolants. Remember, Poison Control and your vet are always your best partners in helping with toxicity issues. Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. Heart of the Spartans, ahead of the curve Daniel Nash Staff Writer
You won’t find Sarah Carter’s name on any girls soccer agate.* Her name never appears under goal highlights or shutouts. But the senior defender and team captain is the heart of Sumner Spartans performance; and their performance this season has been exceptional. The team is ranked No. 1 in the state. “She is the core of our team,” coach Robi Turley said. “She doesn’t get a lot of recognition because she’s a defender. She’s not out there shooting goals.” Turley briefly mused how she was there for the beginning of the “model student athlete’s” soccer career. Carter is a four-year Spartan, but she’s a lifelong veteran of the pitch, beginning in kindergarten. Turley was her first coach. “I don’t know (why soccer is the sport I stuck with),” Carter said. “I played every sport as a kid. But soccer is always what I had the most fun in. I enjoyed playing it the most.” Maybe that’s why she’s filled her
free time with as much soccer as she can handle. When she’s not kicking for the Spartans, she’s doing it for the Washington Premier Football Club, home of a youth development academy for serious players. She is a captain twice over, at school and in the club. Carter came on to the Spartans and summarily earned a spot in the varsity squad. They finished in the the 16 top spots of the WIAA state tournament, and followed up with a pair of top eight team finishes in the subsequent two years. Her junior season was punctuated by an invitation to the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program’s regional team—based on exceptional performance in the prior year’s Olympic camp—and a February invitation to the National Development Camp in Las Vegas. Was it Carter’s aspiration to go to the Olympics? “It was,” she said. “But now that I’ve come to a decision on college, not so much. “Everybody would love to make it to the Olympics. Right now there are girls my age on the team; (qualification is)
incredibly competitive.” Carter verbally accepted entry to Gonzaga University and its soccer team last spring. Her 3.95 grade point average in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program earned her a combined academic and athletic scholarship that will almost fully cover her education expenses. She has her eye on medical study—perhaps nursing, she said—but isn’t 100 percent sure which area of study she would like to pursue. For now, she’s focused on seeing her final season with Sumner High soccer through to a happy ending. When asked about the present undefeated and high-scoring season, she squirmed just slightly, demurring that the Spartans hadn’t come up against truly tough competition yet. But she soon admitted high hopes for postseason and a favorable turnout at the state tournament; preferably breaking into the Final Four. “I’m excited for this season,” she said. “We’re all excited.” * : By press time, Sarah Carter kicked a goal in the Sept. 20 match vs. Clover Park, and is in this week’s agate.

The Sumner Spartans improved their season record to 3-1 – and jumped to 2-0 in South Puget Sound League 2A play – with a 42-12, Friday-night pasting of the visiting Clover Park Warriors. It was a trio of second-half touchdowns that did the trick at Sunset Chev Stadium, as Sumner held a 21-12 lead at half time. DeJon Lynch had a big night for the Spartans, scoring TDs on respectable
runs of 12 and 11 yards before busing loose for an 85-yard jaunt to close out the night’s scoring. Lohaki Kamau gave Sumner the lead with a 6-yard burst in the first quarter, but the Warriors bounced back with a TD of their own. The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued, with Lynch scoring his first TD of the night, only to see Clover Park answer with a touchdown of its own. Sumner pushed its advan-

First XC meet turns out perfect
Hot on their heels
Daniel Nash Staff Writer
Sumner High’s cross country team competed in its first meet of the season Sept. 20. The dual meet against Fife and Washington high schools yielded the Spartans two ‘perfect’ races: races in which athletes from one team finish in the top five spots. The Spartans fielded their perfect races in the boys’ meet against Fife and the girls’ meet against Washington. “It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had teams run perfect meets,” coach Kristin Chapman said. “The kids worked incredibly hard, so it is a well-deserved honor.”
Freshman Nate Weber led the boys pack with a time of 18 minutes, 17 seconds. He was followed by Arturo Perez (18:36), Coltin Tanner (18:55), Josh Goodsell (19:04) and Jordan Landes (19:09). Scores for the boys meets were a 15-50 victory against Fife, and a 20-39 victory over Washington. On the girls side, junior Abi Hensler ran a strong race throughout, taking an early lead and never letting go. She finished first with a 21:11 time. She was followed by Anna Hurd (23:16), Natasha Wilson (23:22), Robi Long (23:32) and Bailey Thomsen (24:10). Scores for the girls meets were a 15-50 victory over
Fife and a 15-50 victory over Washington. On Thursday, the Spartans will compete at Fort Steilacoom against Franklin Pierce and Clover Park for a Warriorhosted dual meet.
Spartans thump Cardinals Daniel Nash Staff Writer
The Panthers boys and girls cross country teams both placed runners in the top five of their races in Enumclaw Sept. 19; indeed, the girls team placed Sierra Espinal and Marie Wilson in the Top Two. But it proved not quite enough to overcome the Hornets’ overall performance. Photo by Kevin Hanson
Sumner’s girls volleyball team pulled out a 3-0 win against Orting the evening of Sept. 18. With the victory, the Spartans improved to 2-1 in conference play. The game was over in three
rounds that saw SHS grow more dominant: 25-14, 25-9, and 25-7. Kaetlyn Brown scored nine kills and 10 aces. Karissa Brown made 11 kills. Hannah Fitzpatrick had 13 digs and Britanny Smith kept the team together with 22 assists.
football FROM 10 tage for good later in the second quarter when Cody Johnson hauled in a scoring pass from Chase Torgison. Second-half fireworks, aside from Lynch’s two touchdowns, included a second TD run by Kamau. Kicker Michael Smith was good on all six of his extra-point tries. The Spartans will be seeking victory No. 4 Friday night when they host league foe Franklin Pierce. The Cardinals shared a piece of the league title a season ago, but are a disappointing 1-3 to start this year’s campaign, including an 0-2 mark in SPSL 2A play. Last week, the Cards were defeated 31-21 by Steilacoom.

or a city that didn’t incorporate until after World War II, Bonney Lake and the surrounding community has its fair share of notable history, for those who want to look. The Naches Trail, which became the Sumner-Buckley Highway, was once the main route over the mountains, bringing settlers and then the military into western Washington, then part of the Oregon Territory. Historic markers dot the path today. In 1855, Connell’s Prairie, just outside today’s city limits, became the f lashpoint for the Puget Sound Indian War when Michael Connell and Lt. James McAllister were ambushed by Native Americans as they crossed what was then a swamp. The next day, the Native Americans crossed the White River and killed nine more settlers before returning to the prairie to ambush two more. Today, the spot is marked by a large stone pyramid at the intersection of Connell’s Prairie Road and Barkubin Road. In 1864, William B. Kelley and his family settled on the banks of what is today called Fennel Creek, establishing the first

permanent residence in the Bonney Lake area. A home on his property, the Kelley Farm, still sits there today and has even been restored recently. In 1911, Lake Tapps was constructed out of four natural lakes to create a massive reservoir to power the Puget Sound Energy turbines that provided electricity to the region for nearly 100 years, before being shut down just after the dawn of the 21st Century. But perhaps the most interesting, and certainly oldest bit of history hidden in the hills of Bonney Lake is the Sky Stone. Believed to have been deposited by retreating glaciers, the Sky Stone has been studied by archeologists, astronomers and geologists who believe it could have been a map of the constellations, or helped indicate seasonal changes. Though its exact purpose is known only to the ancients, most scientists believe it used as a calendar and observatory of some sort. Located near the Naches Terrace development, the Sky Stone easily takes the cake as the coolest historical spot on all the Plateau. NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension.
