A celebration of life service for Stacy Ankerfelt begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Auburn Riverside High School, 501 Oravetz Road.

Ankerfelt died Aug. 20 from injuries after being struck by a car near her Auburn home on July 19.

As students at Kent’s Scenic Hill Elementary returned to class after the long summer break last week, some were met by the tragic news of Ankerfelt’s death.

The 57-year-old California woman who filed a civil suit alleging that Cy Sun – today the mayor of Pacific – had sexually assaulted and molested her in the late-1960s has filed a motion for her suit to be dismissed.

According to Pierce County Superior Court documents filed on Aug. 30, Kathy Carbaugh’s attorney filed a motion asking for voluntary dismissal. The Superior Court granted the motion “without prejudice, fees or costs to any party.”

Because the lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice, it can be refiled again at a later date. [ more CASE page 3 ]

Auburn awaits opening of expanded public library

Space for more seats is one of the best things about King County Library System’s renovated and expanded Auburn library.

Previously there were

about 30 hard, desk-type seats and perhaps a third of all the seats were soft seats, not enough for all the people who use the library.

But the revamped library also opens up more room for children and teens and makes more materials and

more laptop computers available for checkout, with more wireless access.

To mark the grand opening of the expanded and renovated Auburn Library, a community ribbon-cutting celebration is set for 9:30 a.m., Saturday,

Sept. 15. Community leaders, library staff, Friends of the Auburn Library, builders and residents will be there to celebrate the landmark occasion.

After the ceremony, the public may tour the new library and enjoy refreshments and music.

The City of Auburn originally pressed for a 20,000-square-foot building in the early 1990s, but funding and other constraints only allowed KCLS to build to 15,000-square-feet.

The expansion adds that intended 5,000 square feet, most noticeably in the form of a glass-paneled addition that expands into a portion of the parking space on the east side of the building.

King County residents supported a $172 million capital bond in September 2004 to pay for the Auburn Library project and other library expansions and renovations. KCLS closed the library for a year to complete the work and opened a temporary library.

Among the improvements: • An expanded children’s area.

• A new meeting room in the northeast corner of the addition to serve as a quiet space when it is not a meeting room. The meeting room as it used to be was closed, locked and unavail-

“We suggest that you talk about this situation with your son or daughter and keep an eye out for any symptoms of emotional distress such as sleep difficulties or unusual mood swings,” Pfeiffer wrote in the letter.

Ankerfelt taught fifth grade at the school.

According to the principal, the school plans to develop a program called

Carbaugh’s civil suit alleged that Sun had sexually assaulted and molested her in the late-1960s, when they were neighbors in Fife Heights, near Tacoma.

Sun was never charged with a crime in the matter, but Carbaugh’s family sued him in 1970, seeking $10,000 in damages, for “shock, fear and humiliation” and future medical expenses, according to documents obtained from the Pierce County Superior Court.

Sun countersued the Carbaugh family for defamation, seeking $1 million in damages.

After a jury trial in the Summer of 1972, Carbaugh’s case was dismissed and the jury ruled in favor of Sun for $30,000, which was later reduced to $1, according to court documents.

“Ankerfelt Spirit,” where students exemplifying Ankerfelt’s approach to life are celebrated with an “A” award.

The man who hit Ankerfelt, Samuel Cruz, had the charges against him amended Aug. 27 from vehicular assault to vehicular homicide, with bail now set at $250,000.

Cruz pleaded not guilty to the state’s charge that he was driving under the influence of drugs.

He appears again in court for a casesetting hearing on Sept. 11.

In October of 1972, both parties moved to have the cases dismissed with prejudice, meaning neither case could be brought back to court.

Carbaugh, who now lives in California, told the Seattle Times previously that she decided to revisit the allegations after seeing Sun on television.

“He looked hunched over, stooped, hard of hearing, and I am terrified of him,” she said.

“I shouldn’t be. I should not be afraid of that man any longer.”

The suit asked for unspecified damages.

Nine locations along the Green River from Kent to Flaming Geyser State Park were designated for rescue scenarios. Aircraft and rescue teams staged at the Pea Patch in Kent and the Auburn Air Academy before being deployed to the scenarios.

Nine rescue scenarios took place simultaneously along the Green River on Aug. 29, using aircraft and technical rescue teams in a coordinated effort to safely and efficiently perform search and rescue in a large scale disaster scenario.

Regional police and fire departments along with state and federal public safety agencies took part in the exercise that simulated a major flooding event on the Green River.

The objective of the one-day exercise was to demonstrate the ability for the Seattle Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Regional Aviation partner organizations to be interoperable with state and local agencies by communicating and operating collectively during emergency operations.

Two to three suspects entered an Auburn home on Aug. 29, assaulting and shooting two people, according to Auburn Police. The attack occurred in the 6000 block of South 298th Place shortly before 11:50 p.m. Medics transported the victims, 23 and 24, to Harborview Medical Center. They were in stable condition.

One of the injured ran to a neighbor’s house for help. Several other people inside the residence

Firefighters responding to a twostory, single-family, wood-frame home ablaze in the 300 block of Fifth Avenue North saw smoke and flames licking the roof but all the occupants safely outside. Firefighters snuffed the conflagration and saved as much personal property from water damage as they could.

Investigators soon determined that unattended cooking on a range top had burst into flames before jumping through the hood and snaking into the attic. Nobody was hurt. The Red Cross helped the homeowner find future housing.

Sept. 1 Vehicle accident: 9:02 a.m., (Algona). Upon learning that a semi-truck had hit a car, firefighters hustled to the scene and one person with minor injuries.

Sept. 2 Brush fire: 7:47 p.m., (Green River College). Firefighters from the VRFA and Kent Fire Department responding to a conflagration on the north side of Highway 18 just east of the Green River Bridge found two fires that had merged and were consuming grass, brush and trees on the crest of the ridge behind Green River Community College. Firefighters checked the fire and put out the hot spots. They returned early the next day to finish their cleanup.

A Spanaway man told Pierce County authorities that he killed his wife and daughter because of financial and marital issues.

Dean Holmes, 40, walked into the county jail in Tacoma early Wednesday, Aug. 29 and confessed to shooting his 41-year-old wife, Kristi, and 11-year-old daughter, Violet, according to Capt. Ed Smith.

Deputies went to the home and found the bodies and left to get a search warrant before looking for evidence.

Kristi Holmes, nee Hamilton, grew up in Bonney Lake and graduated in 1989 from Auburn High School.

Detectives said that Holmes had been hiding financial issues from his wife and lying about a home they were supposedly going to move into.

Holmes told investigators that he shot his wife while

CERT graduates 24 new members The City of Auburn Emergency Management Office recently announced the addition of 24 new members to the area’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), bringing the total number of graduates in the local program to 465.

The 24 members graduated from the area’s 25th CERT course, which included 24 intensive hours of training over three days. The training culminated in a hands-on practical exercise simulating an earthquake.

After driving his daughter around, authorities say he pulled over and shot her.

“The suspect then drove to a fast food restaurant in Spanaway, purchased a meal for himself, went home and placed his daughter’s body in bed with his wife’s body,” the sheriff ’s office said.

After a few hours of cleaning the house and vehicle, Holmes turned himself in.

On July 30, Holmes, a house painter, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated murder with an enhancement for using a firearm.

Charter schools measure creates problems This Charter School Initiative 1240 appears to be written by liberal politicians with wealthy supporters who wish to take my hard earned tax money earmarked for public education and use it any which way they please with no control by local voters.

As we begin the 2012–2013 school year, the Auburn School District continues an ambitious program for improving student learning through clear and high expectations, the creation of conditions for success, accountability to high expectations, professional collaboration and continuous improvement.

Last year, the district was recognized with more than 20 state and national recognition awards for educational excellence, making us top performers in the state. We have achieved this recognition despite a loss of more than $40 million dollars in state revenue to the Auburn School District.

Our students are performing at academic performance levels that are the highest in Auburn School District history despite dramatic doubling student demographics of 52 percent poverty and five-fold increases in English Language Learners over the past decade.

Unfortunately, the Auburn High School Bond failed despite the fact that the majority of patrons supported the project with 57-percent approval (a landslide victory in a democracy). A super majority is needed to pass the bond that will make Auburn High School facilities on par with Auburn Mountainview, Auburn Riverside and West Auburn. Below are some important points for patrons to understand about the Nov. 6 election: • No increase in average school taxes.

Try to set a goal of being active at least three days per week. This results in many challenges since this population often doesn’t yet possess the social skills needed to thrive.

But every challenge offers opportunities. We seldom know another’s circumstances, but a heartfelt offer of help, when it appears help is needed, is seldom rebuffed nor resented.

Perhaps you could help someone learn English or volunteer to read with a child struggling in school.

Maybe you could combine exercise with service and pick up trash on your street or throughout your apartment complex. Or get together a few friends to help with others’ yard work or even the curbs in front of a business. Couldn’t you be that person who does the small things that can make Auburn a better community?

Can you imagine what this City Council could do if they put as much time, effort and information sharing into important things like I don’t know … maybe a municipal court issue or municipal airport issue as they have into one little median.

Why are all the big important items concerning the City done behind closed doors in the hours of the day that are difficult at best for citizens to attend or, even more disconcerting, in utter secrecy?

But by far the best thing about our Sunday market is the sense of community. People are genuinely happy to be a part of it. We run into friends and acquaintances and catch up. We also chat with neighbors unknown to us, but with whom we have so much in common.

www.auburn-reporter.com [ RUTH from page 1 ] Friends and family recently gathered at Kent Commons to hear Ruth’s story, a program presented by the Greater Kent Historical Society.

Ruth, who grew up Kent, dominated Northwest drag strips and ultimately tamed national ones to become a world champion. He beat the best to become one of the best in his day – a time when Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars were just beginning to evolve and accelerate down the quarter-mile track at top-end speeds of 220 mph or better.

“I was a great part of it,” Ruth said of his contributions as a fabricator and pilot during the hot rod golden age of the 1960s and ’70s.

A fierce competitor and meticulous mechanic who designed, built and tuned his own race cars, Ruth was a brash challenger. Seldom boring, he was a swaggering showman, a promoter’s dream, a driver who hated to lose.

Either you accepted him for what he was – an intense, gifted and smart driver, adaptable to any track – or you didn’t. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, back up his boast and beat all challengers.

These days Ruth has mellowed, his life drawn to introspection. He willingly shares the many memories and joys of a sport he lived to the fullest. He is a walking racing museum.

Ruth has never forgotten his roots.

“I have friends all over the country but my dearest friends are here,” he told the audience.

The Ruth family became well known as they successfully campaigned their cars wherever they went – Kent’s Pacific Raceways, Puyallup and Arlington, even the tracks sprinkled throughout the western provinces of Canada.

Ruth began his racing career at a young age, racing various gas coupes and sedans along with his late brother, John, in the late 1950s and early ’60s.

Ruth built a number of cars, amassing wins and

track records while capturing the NHRA Division 6 title in five of the six years from 1964-69. “The King” went on to win eight divisional Top Fuel titles, including seven straight from 1968-74, and two divisional Funny Car titles.

As wins and track records mounted, Ruth looked to market his efforts. Needing sponsors, he needed a name. “The King” naturally came to him.

“I had a name … and I had to sell it,” he said.

Ruth gained prominence when he defeated two-time U.S. Nationals champion Gary Beck in the 1973 NHRA World Finals at Amarillo (Texas) Dragway.

Ruth and his Top Fuel dragster burned up the strip with a 6.11-second run at 232.55 mph in high altitude for his first-ever national event win.

By the time Ruth retired in the mid-’80s, he had reached speeds of 260 mph.

Having accomplished what he had set out to do as a driver, Ruth turned his attention to helping others from afar. He continues to restore and build street rods, even mentor racers.

Ruth stays close to the sport, appearing at reunions and nostalgic drag events.

While he misses the competition, he refuses to take a dizzying drive down the strip in a modern race car.

Ruth remains a fan. He keeps up with drag racing’s advances but is concerned about a sport that struggles with high performance as it relates to safety. Pros are running four-second passes at speeds well above 300 mph.

Too fast? Perhaps, but the NHRA’s nitro-powered pros no longer race a full quartermile. Nitro division duels stretch only 1,000 feet.

“I’m a purest,” Ruth said. “I would rather race a quarter-mile.”

When it came to covering the drag strip, few did it better than “The King.”

“Seattle put out a lot of good racers out there,” he said. “I was just one of them.”

legacy from his late mother, Martha Jenkins, his father, Sheldon Jenkins, 82, and his large, close-knit, upbeat, laughter-loving family of six brothers and one sister in his native Detroit.

“We have a saying in my family: ‘joking is serious business’,” said Jenkins. “My mother was funny. My dad’s hilarious, my wife laughs constantly when she talks with him.

My grandmother was a comedian. When I talk to my older brother, we don’t talk, we laugh, hysterically. Humor is very important.

“So yes, I’m a very happy person. I’m happy with who I am. I want to teach my kids to be the same,” Jenkins said.

High spirits are facts of life in a Jenkins’ classroom. Not that his students should expect to spend the whole day rolling on the floor with belly laughs and yuk yuks.

“Yes, I am a humorous teacher,” Jenkins said, “but there’s a lot of work to do in my classroom. They are probably not used to having homework in every subject,” Jenkins said. “When I grew up, we had homework in every subject. They’re going to have the same.”

Jenkins said his teaching philosophy calls for him to make the connection from the subject being taught to the world students actually live in, yes, that one, with its Lady Gagas and celebrity culture.

That Jenkins is here to teach is something of a testament to his faith in things.

He was a freelance writer for the Michigan Citizen in 1996 submitting articles about the arts when it hit him that he’d been in Detroit too long.

“One day when I was sitting in my office, which was in my house, I told myself, ‘I need to move,’ So I closed my eyes, grabbed the atlas, flipped the page, pointed, and landed on Tacoma. Three months later, I moved. I couldn’t regret it. I met my wife, Francine, here and have had three children since then. This was the place for me to be.”

He spent 20 years as a telecom engineer, moving back briefly to Detroit to Philadelphia and finally back to Tacoma.

Before deciding on teaching, he was employed at Clearwire.

It was the birth of his first child that started him thinking about the state of education in the world. He decided that he had to something to make himself a role model for his son and encourage him to pursue his own education.

“It also started to come to mind there were too few black male teachers, less than 1 percent in the United States,” Jenkins said.

On the same day he was looked over for promotion but the second time, Jenkins enrolled in the education program at Heritage University in Toppenish.

Reaction from his friends and loved ones to the news surprised him. Looking back, it probably shouldn’t have.

After two years at the top of his class, Jenkins graduated with a degree in education and was awarded a Ph.D fellowship.

“Hopefully, by the time my son is 10 or 11, I’ll have my Ph.D. But I never want to go into administration. I want to teach. Teaching comes naturally to me. That’s pretty much what my teachers said, ‘You’re a natural teacher, you are who you are. No matter who you are talking to, you don’t change.’”

Elementary school, Jenkins said, is exactly the place for him.

“That’s what’s most important. If you don’t get them early, you lose them by high school and middle school. The elementary school teacher is the foundation of education. If you don’t have a strong foundation, your building will collapse. I couldn’t be anywhere else but elementary,” Jenkins said.

AMV alumnus takes over Lion volleyball 2007 graduate Nicole Claudon lands varsity coaching gig

Auburn Mountainview’s new volleyball head coach, Nicole Claudon, is no stranger to the program.

A look into the school’s trophy case reveals that Claudon helped forge the Lions’ tradition and history as a member of the team.

A plaque reads, “First Win, Sept. 20, 2005 versus Tahoma”.

Under the score of the game, is Claudon’s stat line, “13 assists, five aces”.

Another plaque reads, “First State Tourney, Nov. 10-11, 2006”.

Claudon was there as well.

“Being a product of this program, I have a lot of respect for the way it was built and keeping it something that the school can be proud of,” Claudon said. “I just want to continue that.”

The Auburn Mountainview coaching gig is 23-year-old Claudon’s first at the prep level.

After graduating with Auburn Mountainview’s first graduating class in 2007, Claudon went off to Washington State University.

“All my family went there,” she said. “That was the only place I wanted to go.”

“On the court she is definitely the most intense player I’ve had,” Farris said. “She gives it everything she can every time she touches the ball. She makes everybody on the court play up to her level. She demands that everybody wants to win and plays as hard as they can, because that’s what she does.”

Farris added that this year’s squad’s unity will also be a strength.

“You get to a point where you either decide to play at the next level or you’re a little burnt out.

Maybe I was a little burnt out, so it was a needed break,” Claudon said. “But I’m excited to be back in it. It’s taught me so much, so many life skills, as well as being so much fun.”

After touring the nation doing

leadership counseling at colleges for her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, Claudon came home to Auburn.

Intent on finishing school and earning her teaching certificate, Claudon was approached by Auburn Mountainview Principal Terri Herren about the vacancy left by the retired Momi Bowles.

So I just did it. I figured I had nothing to lose.

“Suddenly, I realized it was the part of my life that was missing,” Claudon said. “Growing up, it was

my whole life, constantly playing and competing. I was excited to get back in the game.”

Claudon takes over a program that has set a high standard of success over the past eight years. The Lions, under Bowles, were perennial South Puget Sound League 3A contenders and starting in 2006, qualified for the state tournament

every year. The team owes a large part of its success to Bowles’ emphasis on team unity and bonding.

Claudon intends to continue that emphasis.

“Being a product of this program, I appreciate a lot about Coach Bowles,” Claudon said. “All the players have made it obvious that it’s something they want to keep in the forefront of the

“We’re a pretty scrappy group on defense. They’re going to lay down their bodies for any ball to make sure it doesn’t hit the ground,” Claudon said. “They’re pretty aggressive at the net as well, as far as blocking and taking swings there. They’re going to try to attack as much as possible.

“I’m pretty comfortable we’re going to make it to state,” she said.

“We’ve got big plans for the rest of the season. I’m excited to play into November.”

The Lions host the Puget Sound Adidas Invitational Volleyball Tournament beginning at 8 p.m.

“And the whole team really gets along well; they’re very cohesive,” Leverenz added.

The sixth annual list spans a wide array of businesses in the county, including hospitality, medical services, professional services, retail, finance, government, arts and entertainment and others. Safeway Inc.-Auburn Distribution Center return for the third year on the list.

It has implemented new programs to reduce waste this year, adding Styrofoam recycling. Dynacraft, a PACCAR Company located in Algona, also makes its third appearance on the “Best Workplaces” list. Dynacraft diverts 97 percent of its recyclable materials from the waste stream.

...obituaries Donna Maxine Williams

Donna Maxine Williams, beloved Wife of Richard Williams for 55 years went to be with our Lord Friday the 31st of August. Donna retired from the Boeing Company in 1998 where she valued and enjoyed the special friendships which developed through the years and continued to this day.

After retirement, Donna and Richard made several trips to Arizona where they enjoyed the warmth during our winter months. Bowling was also a favorite activity that She looked forward to weekly with Richard, playing on the Kent Senior League.

Most of all she cherished every moment that she got to spend with her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, spoiling them when ever she could. Donna loved watching her cooking shows, and on any given day you could find her in the kitchen baking for the family. During the Christmas holiday decorating cookies with the Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren was especially dear to Her, mess and all. She always looked forward to spring and the planting of flowers with Richard in their beautiful back yard, and watching for the hummingbirds to pay a visit. At family picnics and barbeques she would always reward us with Her amazing potato salad.

She was the Matriarch of this family, and the Mother of four children, Sharol Rhotehamel (husband Bill), Richard Williams (wife Jeanette), Steve and Scott Williams. Grandchildren are Nichole Boyovich (husband Jeremy), Shaun Rhotehamel, Jason Williams (wife Stephanie), Katie Pohlman (husband Adam), RJ Williams, and Tyler Williams. Great-grandchildren are Jack and Mac Boyovich, Trinity and Isabella Pohlman, and Faith Cassara.

Donna was Aunt to 23 nieces and nephews and their children.

She shared a special love and bond with her nieces Debbie Roberson (husband Glenn), Kathy Meske (husband Cal), and nephew Bill Fowler (wife Loridean).

In lieu or flowers, the family request that donations be made in Donna Williams name to The Virginia Mason Medical Center, Cancer Treatment, in Federal Way, Washington.

Arnold Dluhosh, age 91, passed away August 26, 2012 in Auburn, Washington.

He was born July 23, 1921 in Chehalis, Washington.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Miriam B. Dluhosh, his daughter Karen Dluhosh, his sons James A. Dluhosh and William H. Dluhosh, his granddaughter Burnley Converse Dluhosh, and his sonin-law, Phil Converse.

Arnold enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1942 and served in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea and the South Pacific in the Destroyer Escort service until honorably discharged in November 1945.

After attending Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, he moved to Seattle, Washington with his wife Miriam and daughter Karen. He entered into the banking profession in 1947 as part of the National Bank of Commerce management training program and continued with the bank through several bank mergers until his retirement in 1983.

He will be remembered as “one of the nicest men you will ever meet.” No one remained a stranger long when Arnold was around.

He always looked for the best in people, and more often than not he found it. He never complained, even when he had every right to. His personal warmth and sunny attitude in the face of adversity was an example to be valued, and has left us with memories to be cherished. A quote he kept in his wallet for decades stated,“I took the time to say hello, to someone that I didn’t know; to someone who was walking by, a look of sadness in the eyes. And when they smiled back gratefully and said a warm hello to me; I realized my ‘little gift’ had given us both a lift!” [Author unknown].

Arnold will be remembered by his family, his friends, and those he met in life, for his smile and genuine words of kindness. Private funeral arrangements are being made by Yahn & Son, Auburn, WA. 669735
