The Meals on Wheels, served

by Senior Services of Island County are so important because they help seniors who are often alone, isolated, and can’t cook

or prepare a meal for themselves. It brings hope to seniors who are isolated and frail. The goal is to promote independence, prevent isolation and hunger, and preserve personal dignity.

The Meals on Wheels delivery also provides a personal friendly visit where the seniors can stay connected to their volunteers thus the community.

So Worth The Wait!

I have always believed that. Never in my wildest dreams did I think waiting for something for forty-four years would be as wonderful as it was. Yes, I’m talking about my Impossible Dream coming true at the Whidbey Playhouse seeing Man of La Mancha. It truly was better than anything on Broadway.

Mr. Volunteer kept his promise even

if it took him thirty-eight years and I bought the tickets. We arrived, took our seats (loved the seats Janis!) and eagerly waited for the show. Just before the show began, a lady came over to us holding a copy of the Bridge – my article. Mr. Volunteer tells her I would be happy to autograph it for her. I gave him the elbow. She laughed and introduced herself as Rusty Hendrix (THE Director!!!!!). She wanted me to know that she and the cast had read my article and thought it was wonderful.

They wanted to dedicate the night’s performance to me and Mr. Volunteer. I couldn’t believe it. I felt like a celebrity.

I told her thank you and I was looking forward to the show.

The house lights dimmed and Rusty welcomed the audience. She told them a special guest was here tonight that they wanted to dedicate the performance to.

Rusty then proceeded to tell the audience about the article I had written. She had me stand, the spotlight came on, and people clapped when she introduced me.

She told how after missing it the last time it was at the Whidbey Playhouse my husband was making good on his promise thirty-eight years ago and brought me tonight.

The lady sitting in front of me, turned and asked, “With the same man?” I wasn’t quite sure what she meant so asked “What?” She turned around again and said, “The same man? It’s the same man?” I told her yes. She then turned around and said, “The same man? You’re still with the same man after thirtyeight years?” This time Mr. Volunteer answered her, “Yes, and I’m sitting right here.” She looked at him, shook her head and muttered, “The same man….” Yeah, I know. Some people have wondered how he’s managed to stay so long…

The performance began and it was absolutely wonderful. I sang every song, (quietly of course), laughed, cried, loved every second of it. After the show we went to say thank you to the actors and let them know it was well worth the wait. I was hoping to just greet them

as a group and tell them thank you but oh no. What was I thinking. I went up to the first actor in the reception line, introduced myself and before I knew it, I was being hugged and passed on down the line. After the reception line, everyone escorted me back on stage for a group photo. I was crowned with the Golden Helmet of Mambrino. I asked the actors if they would sing “I Really Like Him”. I joined in and we dedicated it to Mr. Volunteer. It was one of our Love Songs in the early days.

Thank you Whidbey Playhouse, Cast and Members of “Man of La Mancha” for a wonderful romantic night. As Mr. Volunteer and I were leaving, we were walking under the windows at the Whidbey Playhouse and could hear the actors singing bits and pieces of “I Really Like Him” as they were changing out of costume. I have been held by Don Quixote, hugged by Sancho, brought tears to Dulcinea’s eyes, felt love and acceptance from the prisoners and guards, have worn the Golden Helmet of Mambrino, and I left with True Love.

Yes, I can die a happy woman. It was so worth the wait.

The Old Time Fiddlers will play Friday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 pm at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Admission is by donation to the Old Time Fiddlers. Everyone’s welcome.

COUNTRY LINE DANCE

A “Country Line Dance” will be held Friday, Sept. 14 from 7-10 pm, at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Admission is $5.00 per person – $9.00 per couple, $1.00 discount for Senior Center Members. Open to the Public.

QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS

Learn how to make a crib or lap size quilt using scraps. The pattern is called “Jacobs Ladder.” It makes a wonderful throw.

Requirements for class: 10 fat quarters of various materials; thread (white or black); sharp scissors and a sewing machine.

Instructor will have everything else needed. One sewing machine will be available to share if needed. Workshop will run Mondays, Sept. 10, 17 & 24. Cost is $10 payable to instructor the first day. Any questions, call Jacee Stadler, 6758945. RSVP by calling 279-4580.

Medical Safety Net of North Whidbey is a charitable organization providing immediate temporary help with uncovered prescription expenses to people living in zip codes 98277 and 98278. This small fund is supported by the donations of your friends, neighbors and local businesses, and administered by volunteers. In order to meet the needs of as many people as possible, we set limits on how much assistance is available to any one individual over the course of a year. Payments are made directly to providers.
