Push begins to oust Pacific mayor

The push to recall Pacific Mayor Cy Sun gained momentum on Thursday with the official signing and filing of the complaint against him.

Committee to Recall Cy Sun Chairman Don Thomson signed the 200-page document – a 28-page complaint with more than 170 pages of

supporting evidence – at Pacific City Hall and turned it over to lawyer Jeffery Helsdon.

“All I can say is I can’t give enough credit to all the volunteers,” Thomson said. “The work they’ve done is phenomenal.”

Smith: Country needs to take further steps to improve its economy

Smith said the Puget Sound Area is positioned to participate in the global economy, but it needs access to overseas markets, and good smart trade agreements to get that access. The nation also needs good, smart immigration policies.

And while the nation needs to build infrastructure like roads, bridges and airports that will en-

www.auburn-reporter.com able the economy to move, it must also expand access to broadband, and broaden the energy infrastructure.

But as Smith reminded the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce at Emerald Downs on Tuesday, the overarching, dark cloud of Smith the “budget catastrophe” and deficit casts a pall over all the investments that have to be made to make these things happen and get the nation going again.

And the complete lack of consensus about how to deal with the nation’s pressing problems, the house divided, puts everything in

the hazard.

“It’s crippling our ability to pass just about anything,” Smith said.

“We also have all tax cuts set to expire at the end of this year. We have sequestration, which we have initiated as an automatic, across-theboard cut of well over a trillion dollars set to kick in Jan. 1. That will definitely have an impact,” Smith said.

The solution, Smith said “is as obvious” as it is elusive.

“We need a 10-year plan that puts in place a spending-and-tax

policy for this country that gives us at least some dependability.

We are at way too high a level of uncertainty right now for businesses to make decisions about the future, to make the decisions necessary to grow our economy, and for entrepreneurs to feel the confidence to make those investments and take the risks to grow the economy,” Smith said.

City welcomes A-B Street corridor connector A new 1.47-mile route links A Street downtown to the 3.5-mile B Street Northwest corridor.

And soon a driver will be able to motor on this single road all the way from the Transit Station to 277th Street on the northern city limits.

The City of Auburn is ready to celebrate the grand opening from 2 to 3 p.m., Aug. 30, at the intersection of B Street Northeast and 14th Street Northeast.

Community building at Firwood Circle opens For the Reporter

The cacophony of hammering, nail guns and other construction activity has quieted, soon to make way for the sounds of elated youth who now have a place to study, socialize and exercise after school.

Less than a year after the start of construction, the Firwood Circle youth center, at 314 37th St. SE in a 50-unit public housing garden community in Auburn, is completed and ready to open.

“This facility provides an exciting opportunity for young people to have fun while acquiring skills critical to academic success and to determining their futures,” said Stephen Norman, executive director of the King County Housing Authority. “Their parents will also get the support they need to put them and their families on the path to self-sufficiency.

"We are grateful to Sen. Patty Murray for her longstanding commitment to providing the resources that help educate and support children and families in communities across the region.”

The substantially renovated and expanded, 3,366 square-foot facility, is equipped with classrooms, a dedicated computer lab, multipurpose meeting/ activity space and private

counseling areas. Two community nonprofit organizations will run a variety of programs tailored to meet the needs of the residents living in Firwood Circle and the surrounding community.

Starting in September, Neighborhood House will provide youth with a range of life skills, mentoring and academic programs.

Adults will have access to an array of education and employment readiness opportunities, including job search assistance, computer skills training, English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes through the YWCA Seattle/King/Snohomish. Case management services for families will also be offered.

The center is expected to serve about 40 youth and at least 50 adults on an ongoing basis.

Construction of the community facility began in December 2011 and was completed on Aug. 3 at a cost of $1 million. The center was funded with a Capital Fund Community Facilities (CFCF) grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development intended to support the development of education and training facilities for public housing residents. more story online… auburn-reporter.com

City officials say the connector will improve access to the Post Office and facilitate the efficient movement of freight and goods.

The A-B Street corridor

connector is a byproduct of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad’s 1994 Stampede Pass Rail Impact Study, one of four projects in Auburn designed to mitigate the opening of the rail line. The other three were the 3rd Street grade and 277th grade separation projects and the M Street grade separation.

(Grade separation places

the road surface and the railroad tracks at different levels.)

The Stampede Pass line is a secondary BNSF line that starts in downtown Auburn and climbs over the Cascade Mountains. The BNSF in 1993 reopened the line with the intention of eventually improving the tunnel over the mountains so it could take double-stacked

trains through. When that happens, the line will become a lot more busy.

When City engineers analyzed all the at-grade crossings and of all the slow moving trains making the turn and getting onto the pass line, it ended up with about eight minutes of blockage through the downtown.

The $9.7 million project includes $6.5 million from the federal government, $1.3 million in in-kind developer contributions and $400,000 from MultiCare.

“The City of Pacific is now without a single department head,” the committee wrote in a press release. “All department heads have either quit or been fired by Mayor Sun. There is no executive-level functioning in any department, leaving the City at great risk of complete failure.”

The complaint also cites former employees who have filed legal complaints against the City and Sun, including former City Clerk Jane Montgomery, who has filed a claim for damages of $2.2 million.

Helsdon now will turn the complaint over to the King County Auditor and Elections office, which will forward it to the King

According to Helsdon – who along with his attorney partner Thomas Oldfield successfully shepherded a recall petition of Pierce County Auditor Dale Washam through the courts in 2011 – the King County Prosecutor will then determine whether the allegations against Sun warrant filing the petition, which starts the legal process of the recall. If the prosecutor determines the charges are valid, he will draft the language of the petition and the ballot synopsis and file it with King County Superior Court.

“If the judge approves, then that will be the language on the ballot,” Helsdon said, adding that the judge can change or add to the ballot synopsis.

Once the judge approves, Helsdon said, he will file a sufficiency hearing motion on behalf of the committee.

“The judge’s job then is not to determine the truth of the charges, but rather to find if there is factual and legal sufficiency of the charges of misfeasance and malfeasance,” Helsdon said.

If the judge rules for the recall petition, Sun can appeal the decision to the Washington State Supreme Court.

If no appeal is filed, the Committee must wait 16 days before beginning to collect the more than 405 signatures needed to qualify the recall for the ballot.

Once the required number of signatures is gathered and verified, a vote must be held within 45-60 days.

“When I said I wanted to do a recall and needed help, a lot of people stepped up,” Thomson said. “I’m just overwhelmed with where we’re at right now.”

Couple takes in many miles of adventure Frank and Brenda Dudfield have tramped the trails and loped along the lanes of locales all over the planet in the last 20 years.

Busy feet have taken them as far away as the Great Wall of China, New Zealand and, this past June, as close as Republic, a tiny town of 1,100 in the northeast corner of Washington state.

Last weekend’s Northwest Regional Volkssport Association Convention at Camp Barachah finally brought theirs and many other seasoned feet to Auburn.

Four local walks, ranging from 5 to 10 kilometers, awaited the Surrey, B.C. couple and all the other marchers. Although the walks started with a turn through Northwest Trek, the big, bad, voodoo monster daddy of the four-day adventure was the 10-kilometer walk down Crystal Mountain.

Expecting the Crystal Mountain walk to be “a breeze,” my girlfriend, Ann, and I learned the hard way, making one’s way down a mountain, in 90-degree heat, a goodly portion of said descent on shale, at a healthy angle was, let’s say, not as easy as it first sounded. The four-hour-walk spun itself into six hours.

As aching calves told us afterward, this was God’s bullhorn yelling, “You’re out of shape.”

No sweat for the Dudfields, seniors in their early 70s. I met them after a terrific Gondola ride to the top, where we, they and many others stood spell struck in a collective

Take my ball and go home The article, “City to examine future of municipal airport” (Auburn Reporter, Aug. 17), reminds me of a spoiled little boy crying that since the rest of the kids won’t play by his rules, he wants to take his ball and go home.

Mr. Lewis with his newly acquired seat on the GRCC board of trustees needs to grow up and learn how to run a City without tantrums and bullying people into doing it his way or no way.

The fact that the FAA denied GRCC to locate its Trades and Industry program at the airport shows that the FAA is in fact looking out for the best interests of our airport better than the City officials and the Airport Advisory Board.

I believe the reasons stated by the FAA are valid. Contrary to the mayor’s belief that the FAA only has say over the airport because they have given the City loans, the FAA in fact has been given the responsibility to oversee public safety issues of all aspects of aviation.

Their influence and impact will be with the airport as long as it is in place, loans or not.

I, for one, appreciate the extra safety guidance to help prevent potential lawsuits against the City. I can only presume that had GRCC been allowed to set up its trades program on the airport, it would have been another gift of city land to GRCC like five of the nine-plus acres of parklands swapped on Lea Hill. The City

Reporter reads like a parody Were it not free and winding up (for the most part) on my sidewalk – though it has wound up in the bushes and once actually on the roof – I’d cancel my subscription to the Reporter.

It’s not the writing ability of the staff, it’s more a case of the paper almost coming off as a National Lampoon magazine parody at times.

“Pothole” Pete Lewis in his numerous and well-documented ribbon cuttings, the ongoing question of the Auburn Way/ SR 18 median. Really, is this and the doubtless life-altering mental and/or visual damage it does to “thousands” of peoples headed toward the casino or on their way home something that should be occupying the thoughts and energies of certain elected officials and an amazing amount of newspaper column inches more than a pathetically barren downtown?

Born and raised in Auburn, that is something that truly is “More Than I imagined.”

The most recent prize-winner, though, was giving Cy Sun space on the editorial page. If we’re shooting for the image of Andy, Barney, Goober and Mayberry in the image conjured of what was once known as “Little Detroit of the West,” we appear to be well on our way.

Obamacare is at least a plan

Healthcare Act worth closer look I feel I have to respond to Dr. Petter’s editorial in the Aug. 17 issue of the Kent Reporter.

First of all, I think it is extremely misleading, and so are the opinions of the far right, full of the negative talking points of that party.

This country is no longer the leader in health care.

The World Health Organization gives the U.S. health system an overall ranking of 37th in the world.

According to the CIA World Factbook, life expectancy in the United States is not only lower than in other industrialized countries, but is also lower than in Jordan and Bosnia. Infant mortality in this country exceeds that of Slovenia and Cuba.

We are the only industrialized nation that does not offer universal coverage for all its citizens. Every citizen does not have access to exceptional health care services, and that is why the Affordable Healthcare Act was initiated.

The Affordable Healthcare Act provides some of the following: immunizations and preventative care – covered in full; annual limits on essential benefits – removed – includes maternity and newborn care and pediatric services, also hospitalization and ambulatory care; coverage can no longer be denied for pre-existing conditions for those under 19; lifetime dollar limits – removed; dependent children may be covered under their parents’ plan through age 26; your coverage can no longer be rescinded unless you commit fraud.

Regarding Medicare, the Affordable Care Act achieves savings by reducing Medicare payments to drug companies, hospitals and other providers rather than cutting payments to Medicare beneficiaries. The Romney/Ryan plan would achieve its savings by turning Medicare into a voucher system, which does not keep up with expected increases in health care costs thus burdening seniors on Medicare with an average of $6,500 a year more for their Medicare insurance.

Additionally, the Affordable care act uses Medicare savings to help lower income Americans afford

health care and to help seniors pay for prescription drugs by filling the “donut hole” in Medicare Part D coverage. The Romney/ Ryan plan uses the savings to finance even bigger tax cuts for the very wealthy.

The very least Dr. Petter could have done was given readers sources that they could check out themselves.

The Congressional Budget Office did an analysis of the Republican Plan that anyone can check out.

The CBO is strictly nonpartisan.

Also, and I have not even read it in full, but you can go online and read the Affordable Care Act at www. healthcare.gov/law. At the very least, check out the analysis by the CBO. – Barbara Martin

Kindergartners left to wait It is very sad that the Auburn School District has disappointed some very special kids when it comes to enjoying their very first day of school as kindergartners.

Back in May we went through all the hoops to sign our daughter up for full-day kindergarten at either Illaco or Lakeland elementary school. After waiting for the two schools to decide where full-day kindergarten will be held, we were told to have our daughter tested at Illaco.

We were told that they had enough kids to have the fullday kindergarten at Illaco.

We received a phone call

last week from some office within the school district, from a poor woman who was given the task of calling the parents of these special kids to tell them that their full-day kindergarten had been canceled and if they want, they can join a waiting list for Lakeland Elementary.

The families were left with the task to re-plan on how to deal with this situation. I would appreciate it if the principals of Illaco and Lakeland elementary would call each family personally and tell us how this all came to be.

This is our first child entering the Auburn School District, and we have heard great things about how well they do.

This has left a very bitter taste in our mouth about the bigger picture of the school district.

Children who have been affected by domestic violence are invited to join Jennifer Beach Foundation’s new 10-week class aimed to help them break the cycle of abuse. The free class will meet once a week from 6-8 p.m., beginning Sept. 11. The foundation is offering a new Kid’s Club class at a confidential location in South King County. The goal of the program is to decrease a child’s sense of isolation and teach skills that will help them break the cycle of violence. Classes are facilitated by a licensed mental health therapist and a domestic violence advocate.

Food and transportation assistance will be provided. To register for the class, call the foundation at 253-833-5366.

The Jennifer Beach Foundation is a community-based agency that provides education, advocacy and assistance to the community addressing issues of child abuse and domestic violence.

School Schedule Client: My Parenting Plan says that the father has every other weekend until school starts when the children are ages 0-5, but when they turn 5+, he gets every other week. I don’t want to change our schedule and school is starting in September. What can I do?

Also, the oldest one will be in 1st grade and the youngest child will be in pre-k. Will they have different schedules?

Attorney: Some parenting plans have a smaller, limited schedule for younger children under section 3.1, but it expands when the children get older. It is called section 3.1 – “Children Under School Age.” You usually have to define when the “school schedule” starts, which is 3.2. If it says “upon enrollment in school,” and “when each child begins kindergarten”, then it will be a different schedule for each child as one is already school age by the definition in your parenting plan. You can seek to modify the parenting plan, but it is unlikely the court will permit that unless you have really good reasons to change it. You should consult with a lawyer about your options.

Dr. Linda Petter rails against Obamacare and demands that we repeal it and replace it with – what?

Dr. Petter offers no alternatives in her column (“Healthcare Act will be a costly jolt”, Auburn Reporter, Aug. 17). The critics of Obamacare in Congress have not proposed anything at all; they have only criticized Obamacare.

Romney and Ryan have proposed to replace the current Medicare payment system with private insurance.

But let’s look at this for a minute. Dr. Petter says the current Medicare reimbursements to providers are too small, so presumably the private insurance companies are going to give larger reimbursements.

And the private insurance companies are notorious for having very high administrative costs compared to Medicare.

In addition, they need to earn a profit. So they are going to give higher reimbursements, pay higher costs and give a profit to their shareholders, and yet

they will reduce total costs?

Please tell me how this can work, I don’t get it.

I admit that Obamacare is far from perfect. However, it is at least a plan that will provide coverage to many of those who do not have it now. I propose that we keep Obamacare until someone comes up with something better.

Dr. Petter also claims that the U.S. is the world leader in health care. The fact is that we have 50 million citizens with no health care coverage, and our cost per person (including those with no coverage) is twice as high as any other nation on Earth.

How can we think of this as being world leadership?

Kukors placed fifth in the 200-meter individual medley in London after qualifying for the team by finishing second in the trials at Omaha, Neb. “I would have loved to come home with a medal and make my community as proud as possible, but that was the best race I could put together on that day, and I really felt my community was behind me, and it meant a lot,” Kukors said.

Mayor Pete Lewis noted that Kukors holds the world record in the 200 IM and has won seven medals in major international competition – two golds, three silvers and two bronzes spanning the World and the Pan Pacific Championships. Kukors, an Auburn Mountainview graduate and Pac-10 champion at the University of Washington, set the world record of 2:06.15 in Rome in 2009.

“She placed fifth in the entire world in a time of 2 minutes, 9.83 seconds, that’s just amazing,” Lewis said of Kukors’ Olympic finish. “Imagine, fifth best in the entire world?

What an achievement.”

Kukors, a veteran of several world championships, revealed that she’d been more nervous at the Olympic trials than at the Olympics.

“Even though the Olympic Village was unlike anything I had ever experienced, the pool and the competitors were the exact same. It felt familiar and comforting,” Kukors said.

Is another Olympics’ bid in the cards?

Bit of an open question at the moment, says Kukors.

“I’m still going through pictures and reliving it and enjoying this experience,” Kukors said. “Rio is four years away. I’m definitely going to have to assess my career and figure if I want to have another go at it. I love swimming, it’s a part of who I am. It’s really formed me into the person I am today, and I am so thankful for these opportunities.

The Olympics is unlike anything I have ever experienced before.

I just feel blessed to represent my country on that stage and to represent my community.”

At the moment, Kukors said, she is busy unpacking, making sure all of her “stuff” has made it safely back to the United States. She is also determined to enjoy “family and friend time.” And as a 2011 graduate of Chapman University in California with a major in business, she’ll also be looking for a job.

“I would enjoy a great vacation. Somewhere tropical. That would be wonderful. I’m not ready to get back in the water yet. I’d like to take a couple weeks off, and this is really a perfect opportunity. “… I’d like to thank everybody who supported me and my family. This has really been a team effort and a team journey, and I’m so thankful you all were able to come along for the ride with me. I felt the love and I felt the support all the way from London.

Ranked right up there, the couple said, with some of the top sights they have taken in to date during their years of footing it with the International Volksmarch Association and its branches in various nations.

The couple got involved with the organization after spotting an ad in their local paper for a Volkssporting event with the Surrey Trekkers. Since then they walked for events credit with the organization. Brenda herself is closing in on 17,000 kilometers, a serious amount of shoe leather, whatever way you look at it.

“It’s a world-wide organization. It makes you travel and see places you wouldn’t normally go to,” Dudfield, a London native, said of Volkssporting. “During local walks, you go to areas you didn’t know existed. We’ve done a lot of walks here with the local 4-Plus club. We have been to the convention in Sacramento and

walked in every province in Canada. We were in Alaska for the convention two years ago.

We were in Australia and New Zealand last year.”

What was the best?

“This is good,” Brenda laughed, with a nod to Mount Rainier across the valley. “We went to China with IVAsanctioned events for 12 days.

Our first walk was on the Great Wall. It tied in the with the Royal Dutch Marching League, 641 of them in orange shirts, walking up and down the Great Wall. That was quite something.”

“The first time I went out with our son in Cloverdale, Surrey, B.C.,” said Frank Dudfield, “Brenda, who had something else to do that day, said to ‘let us know what it’s like.’ Well, it’s turned out to be everything from streets to mountain walks and everything in between.”

“Fun, fitness and friendship, the three Fs, that’s our motto, and the fourth is the food.

Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t lose weight because we go to a restaurant afterward. Some

of us add the fifth F, which is fermented fruits,” said Brenda Dudfield.

“I started out looking for trails that I wouldn’t be scared to attempt in a hiking book.

The confidence is that I get my map, I know that it’s a certain difficulty and I know that in two hours I’m going to be back to my car, as opposed to taking a wrong trail in a hiking book.

I started when my kids were little because I was looking for hiking and walking adventures I could be more confident taking on,” said Carlyn Madsen of Port Orchard.

Brushing aside a common assumption about the Volkssport movement, that it’s just something for the old folks, Madsen pointed to her 4-year old grandson, Kaieen, pack on back, tough little legs ready to rumble and roar down the mountain.

“Look at him. He was up at 5 a.m. for this,” Madsen said.

“He has two complete 5-kilometer walks, and this is his second 10K.”

Auburn boy is national dance champion Adam Agostino of Auburn was crowned the national Teen Male Dance Champion at the recent West Coast Dance Explosion (WCDE) competition in Las Vegas.

Agostino, 15, has trained at Allegro Performing Arts Academy in Kent for more than eight years and was joined at the competition by eight other Allegro dancers. All placed within the top 15 dancers in each age category.

Agostino earned his Teen Male Elite Dancer by receiving the highest score, accumulated from his solo performance and a jazz and ballet audition. He has participated in the elite dancer program once before, in 2010, when his all-boy, hiphop group, Allegro’s Pure Boyz, placed third in the overall teen division.

While at WCDE, Agostino participated in classes with nationally recognized teachers, such as Kim Wolfe, Dee Caspary and Eddie Strachan. He also danced in a performance with pop star Charice.

WCDE is one of the na-

tion’s most competitive national dance events.

Agostino and the other dancers from Allegro qualified for the national competition by winning an “Elite Dancer” rank at a regional competition held in Seattle in March.

The solo that Agostino performed to help him earn the championship is titled, “The Finish Line.”

It is a lyrical/contemporary piece that highlights Agostino’s lines, strength and his exquisite technical abilities. The piece was choreographed by Tiffany Miles-Brooks, who has choreographed for Agostino for many years.

Agostino says a highlight of the weeklong event is that, as an Elite Dancer at WCDE, “You get to meet dancers from other cities around the country. It was almost like a dream come true, accomplishing something that I have worked for and strived toward for so long.”

Striking a chord with his blend of music Auburn artist, producer attracts worldwide listeners

Forget what you know about hip-hop stereotypes.

Forget the bling, the gangster posing and the hype.

Forget the auto-tuned vocals and self-aggrandizing behavior so prevalent in much of today’s hip-hop.

Marcus Marino, 23, is about none of that.

As one-half of the duo Bop Alloy, Marino – who produces and DJs under the name Marcus D., laying the beats and foundation for his partner Substantial to rap over – says it’s all about the music.

“Bop is short for be-bop, a form of jazz, and alloy is a fusion of two things,” said Marino, a 2008 Auburn Riverside graduate and Seattle University student. “So it just means jazz fusion, hip-hop and jazz. The people who really influence me, as far as my own sound goes, are jazz artists, people like Ramsey Lewis.”

Since 2009, when Marino first forged a partnership with the

Baltimore-based Substantial, Bop Alloy has been quietly making its presence felt on the hip-hop scene.

In June the duo hit the big time, earning a mention in Vogue Magazine, which noted the single “Save The Day” in an article about superhero songs to listen to while waiting for the new Batman movie.

“I just woke up one morning in LA – I was there doing a couple of shows,” he said. “And on my Twitter page I had a mention from Vogue mag. I thought it was just a knockoff thing, but it said check out a playlist for the new ‘Dark Knight Rises’ in Vogue. And they mentioned me and Substantial’s name. And they had David Bowie’s name next to ours. And the Rolling Stones.

“I thought it was a joke,” he said. “Then I saw they had actually named the title of the article after our song, ‘Save The Day’ and had our song as one of the songs to listen to as you’re waiting in line for the movie. It was pretty cool. That sort of solidified everything that I’ve been working for with Bop Alloy.”

Not bad for a local kid who first started mixing beats as a freshman in high school.

COURTESY PHOTO “A couple of my friends in Riverside were rapping back in the day,” Marino said. “They were all trying to do songs. But they didn’t have enough money to actually buy beats, so they wanted somebody to do the beats for them. I had been playing piano since I was about 6 years old, and I found a program that allowed me to make beats that wasn’t too expensive. So I just started making beats from them, and it just went from there.”

Marcus said that although he started out just wanting to help out his buddies, hip-hop soon became his passion.

“I just found my niche, what I wanted to do, and it provided an outlet for me to do something creative,” he said.

After graduation, Marino decided to kick his music career into high gear and contacted Substantial through MySpace, asking the rapper if he was interested in collaborating.

“Surprisingly, he didn’t have too big of a head to contact me, and we did a song together,” Marino said.

The single garnered the attention of one of Marino’s idols, a Japanese producer, Nujabes, and soon Marino had a deal to

produce records with Elevation in Japan.

Marino also has inked a deal with Nujabes’ own Hydeout label to release his own solo stuff in Japan, including his recent “Melancholy Hopeful” release.

“I actually have my own display cases in Tower Records in Japan,” he said. “When I go over there, people actually come up to me in the stores and ask for autographs.

It’s really a trip because I’ve never experienced that before, especially with so much of this done online.

It’s weird to go to a store and see people actually buying physical copies of my albums, CD and vinyl.”

Marino soon will head to Japan to continue his studies in communications at Seattle U’s sister school in Tokyo, Sophia University, and work on his music career.

“I’m going to be moving there, so I’ll be right in the middle of things,” he said. “I think overall it will be a good experience to get over there and find out how my music is affecting people.”

Marino added that he feels blessed to be able to continue to work in music.

“It’s something that I love doing,” he said. “I heard the phrase that if you love what you’re doing, you’ll never work a day in your life. And I literally and figuratively haven’t worked a day in my life. It’s pretty nice to not have to go to work to someplace where I don’t want to be and just do something creative.”

Mountain biker on fast track to World Championships

Kevin Littlefield is in it for the rush.

As far back as he can recall, the 17-year-old Auburn resident and Kent School District online student has craved speed, danger and pushing himself to the limit.

“I’ve always been into the more extreme sports, like skateboarding and biking, so it was pretty natural for me to get on a mountain bike,” he said.

Despite having taken up the sport of downhill mountain biking just three years ago, Littlefield already finds himself at the pinnacle of the sport internationally.

In July he rode his way to a fifth-place finish at the USA Cycling National Championships in Beech Mountain, N.C., earning a spot on Team USA and a berth at the 2012 Union Cycliste Internationale Downhill Mountain Bike World Championships, which begin Aug. 29 in

“I always rode dirt bikes, and when I was about 11 I got into mountain bikes and at 14 started racing,” he said.

“A friend of mine had

down rocky trails on two wheels, in excess of 40 miles per hour.

“It’s pretty much exactly like downhill skiing,” Littlefield said. “You start in a box, and once you break the barrier the time starts. And there is a laser at the end of the course. When you cross it, the time stops. It’s straight against the clock, you’re by yourself and it’s all downhill.”

After his sophomore year at Auburn High School, he enrolled in the Kent School District’s online school to free up time to concentrate on his biking career.

The move paid off immediately, he said.

“I moved up to the junior category and I started doing better, started training and taking it serious,” he said.

“Now I work out twice a week in Issaquah and ride every day. That’s pretty much my training regimen. I ride anywhere

Soon his skill on the bike caught the attention of Seattle bike builders Evil Bikes and Big Tree Bikes. Today they sponsor Littlefield, helping defray the cost of everything from his bike and components to his riding gear.

“If you were to go out there and build my bike with everything at retail, it would be about $7,000,” Littlefield said. “It definitely isn’t cheap.”

Although he hasn’t had to pay for the hardware he needs to race for a couple years, Littlefield

Taylor Said needed to call on all his reserves Sunday as Winning Machine refused to surrender after being passed into the stretch.

“He was really sharp today,” Gutierrez said of Taylor Said. “He was pulling pretty hard. I didn’t want to choke the race out of him, so I let him go a little wide into the first turn. I was surprised to admits that he’s had to pay in injuries, all part of the sport.

“I’ve had three concussions, broken my leg twice, blown out shoulders and had many cuts,” Littlefield said. “One time I came in and my front wheel hit a rock and washed out. I hit my head and got a concussion and then flipped over, and as I was rolling over, planted my foot. It over-rotated and popped the end off the fibula. That was the worst one.”

But, he insists, it’s all part of the sport.

“It’s inevitable you’re going to crash,” he said.

“You just look past it and

he got the lead. I think he was used to the shorter stretch at Hastings. When Winning Machine came back, my horse kept going. He’s a fighter, too. This win is very special for me. Glen (Todd) is like my dad and Troy (Taylor) is like my grandpa. I’m so happy I could win this race

for them. They’re my family.”

Matias has had a dream season of his own at Emerald Downs, winning a combined six stakes on Mike Man’s Gold, Champagneandcaviar and Winning Machine. And after California speedster Gladding scratched, Winning Machine and Matias sud-

Maybe the National team next year and more racing in Europe.”

Regardless of how he

does competing, Littlefield said it’s really just about enjoying the rush and feeding his need for speed.

“I just love racing and love riding,” he said.

“Just getting better and progressing is what I like.

Going out to a new trail that you’ve ridden a lot and finding new lines is kind of what gets me. I’m going to take this as far as I can, and if it’s meant to be it’s meant to be. I don’t want to fail because I didn’t try hard enough or didn’t train hard enough or put enough into it. I want it to be that I couldn’t have done any better.”

Auburn Mountainview graduate Lilia Gudyzuk has signed a letter of intent to attend and wrestle for Jamestown College in North Dakota.

As a Lion Gudyzuk blazed a trail by becoming the school’s first ever girls wrestling champion, taking first in the 152-pound division at the 2010 Mat Classic state tournament.

“I had to do the best with what I had,” Flores said. “I had nowhere to go outside, so I was just looking for a pocket to go through. I finally got through, but it was too late. The leaders were already seven lengths ahead at the top of the stretch.

“I’m proud of my horse.

Things didn’t go his way, but he showed his spirit.”

Gregory Steven Schultz died August 2, 2012, in Olympia,Washington. He was born in Seattle on August 4, 1956, and grew up in North Lake City, Mountlake Terrace, Black Diamond and Enumclaw and graduated from Enumclaw High School. Hazel L. Schermerhorn, 94, died on August 15, 2012 in Auburn, WA. She was born in Eureka, MT on September 2, 1917 to Sarah and Joseph Fuller, 7th of 9 children. She was raised in Flagstone, B.C. and moved back to Eureka before she turned 21.

She married Ivan T. Schermerhorn in 1940 and moved to Auburn in 1952 where they raised 5 children. She was a homemaker for many years, but went to work and retired from Boeings at age 62. In her retirement she traveled throughout the states and enjoyed her many grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters Bonnie (Tim) Flannery, Denise (Dan) Johnson, and her sonsThomas and Richard; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and her companion of 36 years, Herbert Southwick. She was preceded in death by her husband Ivan and daughter Iva. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Price-Helton Funeral Home in Auburn, WA. Norma Gelston, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Born in Montreal, Canada, she had been a Auburn area resident since 1967.

Norma served with the Canadian army during World War II. Survivors include: Son, Bruce (Betty) of Auburn. Daughter, Carol Fink (Dennis) of Golden Valley, AZ. Douglas D. Foreman

Douglas D. Foreman was born September 30, 1953 in Tacoma and passed away on August 15, 2012.

He grew up in Auburn and during his senior year of high school earned the Coaches Achievement Award for football.

He married Lynnette Nelson in 1976 and started his career with Boeing in 1977.

He put his family first but still took time to develop life long friendships.

He loved local sports teams and was a Seattle Seahawk season ticket holder from the beginning…Section 312 will be a bit quieter this season.

He was loved and will be missed every single day.

DETERMINATION OF NON-SIGNIFICANCE King County Water and Land Resources Division proposes to set back and extend the Reddington Levee along the left (west) bank of the Green River through a portion of the City of Auburn.

The Reddington Levee Setback and Extension project is part of a larger overall flood management strategy for the lower Green River. The project area is 1.3 miles in length and extends from

Two and a half months later, the first draft was finished.”

The draft would soon grow into a deep, dark, bold and entertaining fantasy novel, “Daughter of Hauk”, recently released in ebook and paperback by Solstice Publishing.

The book presents a “Medieval-like” world of wizards and witches, elves and devils, where anything is likely to happen to anyone at any moment.

For Collins, the project spanned 3½ years – from script to a contract with the publisher. She is thrilled about the finished work.

A sequel already is in the works.

“I always had (the imagination),” Collins said, “but didn’t do anything with it.”

Until lately.

Arwenna has been set up to help a demon lord gain a foothold in her world, Collins said. Only she doesn’t know it until she’s executed and memories that had been hidden from her for most of her life come through.

She’s able to return and tries to stop the very thing she helped let loose onto the world, Collins explained.

“It’s a sense of accountability,” Collins said of the book. “To me, there seems to be, in society in general, this problem of ‘well, I did it, but it really wasn’t my fault. I don’t have to fix it.’ But everybody in (the book) is ‘no, we screwed up.

We admit it. We fix it.’ ”
