The much-disputed narrowing of Island Crest Way, centered at the intersection of Merrimount at S.E. 44th Street, aka the ‘road diet,’ is about to become a reality.

Discussions to ‘shrink’ the roadway at that awkward point, the site of many serious accidents, began in 2007. The goal was to make the problematic intersection safer for both turning traffic and pedestrians. City planners and the Council expected to use observation and study to decide if the idea should be expanded along the corridor.

After 23 years on Mercer Island, the Japanese restaurant Haruko’s is to close.

Husband and wife, Isao and Yasuko Wakayama, have owned and operated Haruko’s on Mercer Island since 1989.

The couple came to the Island in 1989 when they purchased the business that was located on the land where Aljoya is now. The restaurant has been its present location next to Rite Aid for five years.

According to Nathan Belo, who represented the Wakayamas in the sale of their business, the owner was facing a longer lease commitment than he wanted. They are now planning to retire.

The restaurant, located at 3033 78th Avenue S.E., will be renamed Phobulous and will serve Vietnamese food and bubble tea.

The new owners are Carolyn and Andy Nguyen, who have had a similar restaurant on the Eastside.

Wakayama was born and raised in Nagoya, a port city on the Pacific Coast of Japan. Mrs. Wakayama was born in Osaka, but grew up in a small, rural town outside of Tokyo. Both moved to New York City, where they met in their early 20s.

Weed is a senior biology major at Loyola Marymount University, pre-med, and will graduate in May 2013.

Four earn Eagle Scout rank Four Islanders who began as Cub Scouts are to receive their Eagle Scout awards this Sunday. The four scouts started together in Cub Scout Pack 624, Den 2, with dad Carson Hornor.

The four boys advanced together into Boy Scouts at age 11, in 2005, and formed the ‘Pickles Patrol’ with several other school friends.

Highlights of their joint scouting career include a 62-mile hike at Philmont Ranch, sailing at Sea Base in Florida, and the National Scouting Jamboree 2010 in Virginia.

To achieve Eagle status, each scout planned, led and completed a community service project.

Families looking for a safe and convenient way to save for college have until May 31 to enroll in GET. Thousands of parents are continuing to opt for the state’s guarantee and GET’s flexible, tax-advantaged options for saving. After May 31, enrollment will be closed until the fall, when it will reopen at a higher price.

Though recent media coverage has prompted questions, no changes have been made to the program.

GET will continue to enroll families and the state guarantee is secure.

GET accounts can be used to attend almost any public or private college, university or vocational school in the country. As a 529 plan, GET offers sig-

nificant tax advantages.

The cost of one GET unit today is $163. The future value of 100 units is equal to one year of resident, undergraduate tuition and required state fees at the highest-priced Washington public university (UW or WSU), no matter how much tuition increases. Families can buy any amount from 1 to 500 units per student, though the average GET account holds just under 200 units. Betty Lochner, director of the GET program, encourages families to save an amount that fits best within their budget.

“With tuition costs soaring, GET is a very good option, especially for families with young children.

Parents who start early have the opportunity to save literally thousands of dollars on the future cost of college,” she said.

Over 11 percent of new accounts are opened by a child’s grandparents.

MIPD’s tips on how to handle solicitors As the number of daily door-to-door solicitors and sales representatives increases over the warmer weather months on Mercer Island, the police department warns that while some are legitimate, others are not and may use dishonest or fraudulent sales tactics and aggressive sales pitches to get business from Island residents.

Solicitation is not prohibited because it is protected by the U.S. Constitution First Amendment as free speech.

Here are some tips: • If you do not wish to have solicitors at your door, post a “No Trespassing” and/or “No Solicitation” sign on your property — at the driveway entrance and the front door. If a solicitor ignores the sign and approaches your door, the solicitor is trespassing. To report a trespassing solicitor, call the dispatch center for the Mercer Island Police Department at (425) 5775656 (non-emergency) or 911.

• Use good judgment.

You don’t have to open

your door to a solicitor. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to them, tell them you have no interest in what they are offering, and politely ask them to leave.

• If you do decide to open the door and speak with a solicitor, don’t be afraid to say “no” if you don’t want to purchase their product or participate in their cause.

• At any time, you can always ask the solicitor to leave. If they refuse to leave, shut your door and call 911.

• A solicitor is a stranger.

Never tell a solicitor that your spouse or parents are not home. Your safety is your biggest priority.

• Always be cautious when providing credit card numbers, checks and/or cash to door-to-door salesman.

• If a solicitor becomes agitated and too aggressive or makes threatening statements, close the door and terminate the contact with them. Then call 911 to report the incident.

• Be aware of new dishonest sales pitches.

Solicitors can pretend to be from your neighborhood or claim to know someone in your neighborhood in order to build rapport with you or gain your trust.

Finally, never let a solicitor into your home.

Dealing with deer on Mercer Island The City of Mercer Island is reminding Island residents that, especially this

time of year, deer sightings on the Island can become more common. While the deer may enjoy the Island for its lack of predators, many residents can find the animals to be pests, as they eat plants and trees.

The city contracts with Regional Animal Service of King County, but RASKC does not deal with wildlife, handled by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Deer are protected yearround in the state, and it is not legal to hunt deer on Mercer Island. WDFW can help residents dealing with wildlife, and how to minimize damage to landscaping. Learn more online at wdfw.wa.gov.

AAA driver program in Bellevue, June 7 A driver improvement program will be offered

by AAA in Bellevue on June 7. The course will give practical guidance for traffic accident prevention and enhances driver safety and confidence. Successful course completion qualifies drivers 55 years of age and over for automobile insurance premium discounts.

Boater education cards required The boaters’ card is required when operating motorboats with 15 horsepower or greater (including personal watercraft or any motorized watercraft).

To the editor ‘Road diet’ changes mean more problems on roads Like many other Islanders who live south of 40th Street, I was relieved when, amid budget concerns, the ‘road diet’ scheme that would slash Island Crest Way to half its current capacity appeared to have died quietly last year.

I was therefore very disappointed when, in last week’s Reporter, it was noted that this plan was not only back on the agenda, but that the MI City Council is prepared to award a contract for the destruction of our primary north-south corridor on May 21, with disruptions actually beginning as soon as this summer.

To claim that reducing Island Crest to one lane in each direction will cause anything short of a traffic nightmare is utter nonsense. One need only watch the morass that exists south of 53rd Place to see what the future really holds: a constant and unbroken wall of cars grinding along at the pace of the slowest vehicle in a three-mile stretch, with still more lines of hapless drivers on side streets waiting for what seems like an eternity for their fleeting chance to dash into the column. Yes, there may be a few folks who choose to ride bicycles on the newly created bike lanes instead of driving, but we all know that this number will be small and will drop to near zero on those rainy days we occasionally see in our area.

And what about the bikers, anyway? Will they really benefit from this change, as suggested as one excuse for the plan? narrow, dark, winding Mercer Ways will no doubt see significant increases in car traffic as drivers detour away from Island Crest. I foresee an increase — not a drop — in conflicts between bikes and cars, and, unfortunately, in biker injuries, if this ill-conceived social experiment goes forward.

It was clear from the many letters printed in the Reporter in the past that many of us are opposed to this plan. I therefore call on the City Council to put the matter to a public vote. This issue is too costly and too far-reaching in its impact to be decided by a small handful of people, many of whom live outside of the area that will be impacted.

‘Feel good’ money spent on ‘green energy’ absurd

to support a private company’s (Puget Sound Energy) green energy program. I realize that PSE is obligated under state law to have such a program. I also know that the green energy program is very expensive and supplies very little energy into the power grid.

Individuals who ‘feel good’ about supporting green energy by having PSE add dollars to their power bill are free to do that at any time. However, having the City Council spend taxpayer money in an effort to feel good about green energy is absurd in my opinion. City Council members who want to support green energy in this way are free to spend their own personal money to do so.

When the economy is in the state it is in and when governments at all levels are struggling to pay their bills, using Mercer Island residents’ taxpayer money is frivolous and uncalled for.

The federal government has wasted hundreds and millions of dollars on failed green energy programs, which, of course, is taxpayer money as well. Island taxpayers should not be doubly burdened by having our City Council spending money for this or other dubious causes.

May 8 Car crash: A woman drove

into a tree at high speed at 12:05 p.m. in the 8400 block of S.E. 26th Street, next to Luther Burbank Park. The woman was suicidal and was taken to a hospital. She was cited for reckless driving, on investigation.

Pedestrian accident: A Mercedes-Benz backed into two pedestrians at 1:30 p.m. in the Tabit Square parking lot on S.E. 27th Street. The driver, 22, was following a friend and both entered the parking lot in the wrong direction. When they realized their mistake, they both began backing out.

The 22-year-old driver did not look behind her at first, and struck a woman, 33, who was leaving Zaw Pizza with her young daughter. A Zaw Pizza employee, 25, who was carrying out the customer’s pizzas, was also knocked down. The mother sustained injuries to her elbow, and possibly head and neck, and the employee had an injured arm that she reported as sore and pain-

May 9 Arrest: Police arrested a

54-year-old driver on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant at 7:12 p.m. in the 3900 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. The suspect was driving with a suspended license, and he was booked into the King County Jail.

May 10 Car prowl: Someone stole

$1,900 worth of items out of a Jaguar in an apartment complex carport, overnight, in the 3000 block of 81st Place S.E. There was no evidence of forced entry, and the thief stole a survival kit, jackets, a GPS unit and an iPod. Theft: Someone stole a package that UPS delivered to the doorstep of an 85-year-old woman’s residence in the 4400 block of West Mercer Way. The woman’s son confirmed with UPS that the package had been set on the doorstep. The parcel contained a heart-shaped sculpture.

A 32-year-old woman found a toddler standing in the middle of Island Crest Way at S.E. 42nd Street at 2:02 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. One other witness was present.

Police checked the area for the boy’s home.

An hour later his mother, a resident of 85th Avenue S.E., one block away, called 911 and reported that the boy, 2 1/2 years old, was missing.

The boy was taken home, and a report was forwarded to Child Protective Services.

Accident: A female bicyclist

struck the side of an SUV at 8:39 a.m. in the intersection of 81st Avenue S.E. and North Mercer Way. The driver, 34, obeyed the stop sign and said the way was clear when he looked both ways, but as he was turning, a bicyclist entered the crosswalk from the sidewalk and rode into the side of the vehicle. The bicyclist, 25, was taken to a hospital for dizziness.

26-year-old woman at 10:15 p.m. in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street after checking her license plate. The woman was driving with a suspended license and gave up a jar with marijuana inside after police detected an odor of marijuana. Police searched her vehicle with consent and confiscated two glass marijuana pipes.

May 12 Theft: A 44-year-old Mercer

Island woman’s credit and debit cards were stolen during a house party in Mt. Vernon between 12 and 4 p.m. The thieves made several purchases, under $1,500, with the cards.

Collision: A Mercer Island Fire Department aid unit responding to an emergency call at 1:57 p.m. in the 7300 block of S.E. 24th Street was passing vehicles at 15 mph when its side mirror collided into the mirror of an oncoming SUV that had stopped for the aid unit. The SUV’s mirror had minor paint damage. The aid unit continued on to the call.

May 13 Arrest: Police stopped a vehicle for parking and report of sale violations at 5:33 p.m. in the 2400 block of 84th Avenue S.E. The 27-year-old passenger was arrested on an outstanding $5,000 warrant for driving while intoxicated, and she was booked into the King County Jail.

Assault: A 16-year-old male was booked into the King County Jail Juvenile Detention Center after punching his parents at 7:30 p.m. at home. His father reported the incident.

Theft: A 69-year-old Mercer

Island man left his wallet at the north QFC self-checkout lane at 4 p.m., but no one turned it in. The man cancelled his credit cards, but lost $1,000 in cash contained in the wallet, along with his ID and Social Security card.

Capsized canoe: Mercer Island Marine Patrol responded to a capsized canoe at 2:54 p.m.

A couple and their 3-yearold child had fallen into the water. The Marine Patrol rescued the family out of the water and recovered the canoe. There were no injuries, and the canoe was not damaged.

May 14 Burglaries: A police officer

responded to a burglary at Shorewood Heights in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive at 9:20 a.m.

Someone pried the window of an office loose, and broke it, overnight. The alarm was not activated, but no apparent entry was made. The cost to replace the window is estimated at $400.

A North-end home in the 2400 block of 65th Place S.E., near Secret Park, was burglarized after the residents — a couple — left at 10 a.m.

They returned at 1:20 p.m.

In the meantime, burglars ransacked the house and filled a pillowcase with stolen items: a Canon camera and 55-250 lens, Mac computer and Dell laptop. Police lifted fingerprints from the outside edge of the French doors, and a metal drawer-pull with a scalloped brush-nickel finish, taken from the closet dresser, was placed into evidence.

Jerry was born on April 9, 1927 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He died peacefully at home on May 9, 2012.

Jerry graduated from North Central High School in Spokane in 1945. He then joined the Army Air Corps. After discharge he attended Whitworth College where he met Peggy. They were married in 1952.

Jerry graduated from the College of Architecture at the University of Washington in 1954. He was a senior partner in the firm “Waldron, Pomeroy, Smith, Foote and Akira”.

Jerry was an avid skier, sailor and glider pilot. He is survived by his wife Peggy, his children Linda, Charles (Susan) and Jim, his grandchildren Alex, Elena, Isabella and Charlie, and his sisters Delayne Goss and Dianna Harter.

Arson: A Shell station employee in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street refused a sale of cigarettes, at 7 p.m., to two male teenagers who did not have ID and looked to be 17 years old. Both boys then went into the restroom, and an hour later, a customer reported a burned towel dispenser in the bathroom.

Theft: Aladdin Bail Bonds sent a delinquent notice to a 31-year-old Mercer Island man claiming that he owed $115 for a bond that he had never posted in February.

The victim went to Aladdin, which showed him a driver’s license with his information.

The license, however, had a different photo, height and weight.

May 15 Theft: A 48-year-old Mercer

Island woman reported that someone withdrew $1,900 from her Bank of America account after May 10 without her authorization. A bank teller in Citrus Heights, Calif., permitted the withdrawal.

Malicious mischief: Three windows were broken out of a school portable at Lakeridge Elementary, in the 8200 block of S.E. 78th Street, sometime overnight. The vandals painted a line of silver spray paint on the back wall of the portable and left the paint can behind, on the ground, where two broken windows were found.

22-year-old Mercer Island man at 9:22 a.m. at his residence in the 2500 block of 81st Avenue S.E. He was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and transferred into the custody of Bellevue police.

Thefts: Several fraudulent charges were placed on a 65-year-old Mercer Island woman’s credit card between 12 and 4 p.m. Someone also transferred money from her Bank of America checking account to one of her lines of credit.

A ride to honor Mercer Island lacrosse is a catalyst for documentary to aid veterans’ families

When the planes hit on Sept. 11, 2001, Kevin Mincio had just finished a conference call in his GoldmanSachs office at One Liberty Plaza. As the World Trade Center crumbled next door, Mincio escaped with his life, but it wouldn’t be one he ever returned to.

In the next few months, Mincio, then 30, abandoned his position as GoldmanSachs’ youngest-ever VP of financial information technology and enlisted as an Army private. He moved his wife and livelihood to Washington state for basic training at Fort Lewis. There, he befriended Jesse Williams — a California kid with a great sense of humor — and together they manned the first Stryker unit into Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Years later, Mincio would celebrate the birth of Sgt. Williams’ daughter, Amaya, with a promise — to care for Jesse’s family if he didn’t return from his second deployment.

In 2007, Williams was killed in action. Though Mincio’s active duty was

over, his commitment to his brothers in arms was not.

He began by fundraising for Amaya. Now he does so to provide support for Gold Star families across the nation as head of the Team Jesse Foundation. Inspired to do more, Mincio marked the charity’s inception and the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 with an epic, 95-day bike ride across the United States.

On Memorial Day — Monday, May 28, the documentary of his journey, “The Long Ride Home,” will premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival.

Mincio’s story is extraordinary — though he’s loathe to admit it — but no one would have seen it on a big screen if it wasn’t for Mercer Island lacrosse.

Brett Bowker, 24, has loved lacrosse since middle school. He played it competitively at Mercer Island High School and covered it as a journalist after graduating from the University of Washington’s journalism program. In April of last year, Bowker was asked to profile the new coach of his old MIHS lacrosse team.

That coach was planning quite a bike ride.

Taken by Mincio’s story, Bowker contacted Thomas Lee Wright, father of a fellow MIHS lacrosse player and acclaimed documentary filmmaker. Wright was hooked.

Thus, with a volunteer force and a shoestring budget, Mincio and friend Matt Saury set out to “connect with America” and the families of its fallen. The ride began in Santa Rosa, Calif., Jesse’s hometown, on the day of his 30th birthday, June 9. The two reached Ground Zero on 9/11.

Bowker and two cameramen followed the riders on their 4,200-mile traverse in a media van. They filmed as Mincio and Saury averaged 70 miles a day through desert heat, tropical storms and Hurricane Irene.

When they weren’t braving

the elements, the riders visited soldiers’ families, gravesites and communities. They shared Team Jesse’s mission and asked for donations.

Over the course of the summer, Mincio raised $120,000 for the Foundation.

“The wars are not just one family’s burden,” Bowker said in a recent visit to a UW journalism class. “People who have lost family members are kind of walking around and saying, ‘Does anybody care?’ Kevin was that person saying, ‘I care who your son was.’”

Boys soccer prepares for semis

After a game filled with time stoppage, the Mercer Island boys soccer team succeeded in beating Mount Vernon on Friday night to advance to next week’s state semifinals. The Islanders won 3-0.

“We defended well,” said head coach Steve Newman.

“We played the ball out quickly so their forwards couldn’t get in. A lot of times we did play it right to them, and we can’t do that.

You have to play it farther and deeper. We played very good offense; they could have scored six, seven or eight. We really should have, but that’s the way it goes.”

The Islanders scored early, off an Alex Wood goal, assisted by Jake Michael in the 12th minute, followed

by a second goal, again by Wood in the 17th minute.

As the Islanders remained ahead and Mount Vernon was unable to complete their chances, tension on the field rose. Wood was given a yellow card with 5:30 left to play in the half, followed by the ref giving Mount Vernon a red card, which was later downgraded to a yellow.

Back in action in the second half, the earlier pressure between the teams continued. The Islanders had several strong chances, and Mount Vernon continued to shoot. Things once again came to a head with 37 minutes left to play. The boys doubles semifinals featured a duo from Bainbridge beating Kyle Baska and Marcus Almqivst, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

In the girls tournament, Nora Tan advanced to the finals after beating Barbara Ann Carey of Seattle Prep, 6-3, 6-1, in the semis. Tan won the district title, beating Catherine Allen of Holy Names, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Sophia Gage and Lydia Venditti won the girls doubles district title, beating a team from Bainbridge, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. They won their semifinal match over Seattle Prep, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.

Mercer Island boys and girls track and field teams finished 10th in the district championships, sending nine athletes to the state championship at Mt. Tahoma in Tacoma, May 24-26.

Mercer Island walked off with top honors in the girls javelin at the 3A Sea-King District championship.

Senior Carly Andersen easily grabbed first place with a throw of 121-11, and senior Lauren Ellis placed third with a personal best of 114-04, to send both girls to state.

Peter Brockway, a senior, is also headed to state in the javelin with a throw of 164-10 and a fourth-place finish. The top five finishers qualify for state.

Sophomore Eric Schulz came in fourth as well in his 800-meter race, with a time of 1:55.72. Sarah Bjarnson was literally elbowed out of a top five finish in the girl’s 800-meter and had to settle for sixth place as did fellow sophomore Alida Scalzo in the 3,200-meter and 1,600meter races.

The boys 4x100 relay of junior Risley Lesko and seniors Nicky Sinclair, Josh Wong and Jeff Lindquist,

put up their best time this year of 43.59 in the preliminary race on Wednesday and came close to that to finish fourth in the final race with a time of 43.64.

“The 4x100 relay team reached their goal of going to state. However, they still have work to do on that final handoff,” said head coach Lezley Smith. “If they get that fixed, they will not only do well at state, but should break the school record of 43.05.”

The final event of the 3A SeaKing District championships showed the competitive spirit of the Islanders when the 4x400 boys relay took to the track Friday night. The relay team of senior sprinters Sinclair and Lindquist and sophomore distance runners Daniel Mayer and Eric Schulz came into the finals in seventh place in their first time running together as a relay.

“For our first outing as a relay, we did pretty well, but we knew we had to shave a few seconds off our time to get to state, and we knew that we had to stay close to Seattle Prep, who we thought would be in fourth,” said Sinclair.

Girls water polo third at state After starting off this season with a small group of returners, the Mercer Island girls water polo team persevered to finished third in the state.

The Islanders overcame their challenges early on, ending the season with a 6-5 record and beating Shorewood in the state tournament to finish third. Goals in the final game of state were made by Christine Meegan, Christina Williamson, Mikayla Fletcher, Jenna Sharman, Michelle Na and Kristin Hoffman.

The team was led by coach Ryan Hall, captains Fletcher and Osman, the team’s only seniors, and Williamson, a junior.

Boys lacrosse in semis against Bellevue In their first appearance of the 2012 state tournament, the Mercer Island boys lacrosse team quickly dispatched Bellarmine Prep to advance to the state semifinals.

On Friday night the Islanders won 11-5 over the Lions. Mercer Island started off with a slow 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but added six in the second to make it a 7-2 game at halftime. Bellarmine posted two goals in the third, holding the Islanders to just one, but Mercer Island continued their dominance in the fourth with three additional points.

Girls golf captures second straight district title The Mercer Island girls golf team won its second consecutive District 2 title on Monday afternoon at Riverbend Golf Course in Kent.

The Islanders took the team title, setting a new record, with 88.8 points.

Second-place Bainbridge had 34.3.

Individually, Chelsea Saelee was the top finisher, shooting 74. Five members of the Mercer Island girls team will compete in the state competition next week.

The top 18 moved forward from districts. Haley Chinn finished second, shooting 79, while Jolie Shen shot an 86, and Jacqueline Bendrick shot 90. Madison Pearson shot a 94 during the competition.

The girls team traveled to the 3A state tournament in Spokane, which began May 22.

Islander girls lacrosse takes fourth at state After falling to Bainbridge in the state semifinals, the Mercer Island girls lacrosse team played Lakeside Saturday morning for third/ fourth place. The Islanders finished fourth after losing 12-5 against the Lions.

The Islanders scored the first goal, but Lakeside quickly made up ground, holding a 5-3 lead at the end of the first half. Lakeside scored seven more in the second, holding the Islanders to just two.

Madison Blackburn had two goals during the game, with two draw controls, while Tyler Sherper added one goal and two draw controls. Elena Skouras added a goal and caused a turnover.

Saffron Snethen posted one goal, four ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Hannah Paborsky had five ground balls. Erika Eagan made six saves during the game.

On the previous Tuesday, the Islanders lost 24-18 to Bainbridge at Bainbridge High School in the state semifinals.

The Islanders finished the season with a 12-4-1 record.

Whatever happens from now on is fate. We’re a good enough team to deal with it. We’ll play a team from Eastern Washington, so we don’t know what its going to be like, but it should be similar to this style. We’re hoping to get into that final. One game at a time.

Mercer Island will play in Friday’s semifinals at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup against Eastmont, out of East Wenatchee. Eastmont beat Mount Spokane last weekend 8-0. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
