Road construction season unofficially kicked off this month in Bellevue with the start of the city’s annual Pavement Overlay Program. Major arterials, including Northeast Eighth Street, 148th Avenue Northeast and 164th Avenue Northeast, are slated for new pavement this summer.

Over the next six months, the city will repave more than 21 miles of roadway, including the restoration of 17 different water and sewer repair sites at various locations throughout the city. Workers also will fix or replace curbs, gutters and sidewalks as needed, and install 96 new curb ramps to make it easier for people with disabilities to get around.

Now in its 26th year, the repaving program is designed to maintain safe, high-quality streets and save money over the long run. If a street is neglected too long, city officials say, all of the old asphalt must be removed and replaced.

Such a complete rebuild can cost up to three times more than a pavement overlay.

This year’s overlay program, which will cost approximately $4.4 million, is concentrated on arterial streets in east Bellevue. Projects generally are focused in one area per year to save money.

Crews first will begin with the pavement restoration of utilities work sites throughout Bellevue. This work is expected to be completed by Memorial Day (May 28), weather permitting.

Bellevue’s KidsQuest Children’s Museum plans to expand and move into the former Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art in Downtown Bellevue. The move would come in 2015, following a multi-million dollar capital campaign that will begin this year.

KidsQuest, now located at Factoria Mall, averages more visitors per square foot than any children’s museum in the country. It will hit 1,000,000 visitors later this month.

“The buzz around KidsQuest has grown far beyond what we could have expected – we’ve been at capacity almost since we opened,” said Putter Bert, executive director and 26-year veteran in the children’s museum industry. Bert and Whyel have been in talks since 2011, when the Whyel family agreed that KidsQuest would be the ideal non-profit to occupy the iconic Bellevue structure.

The new 13,500-square foot location would offer hands-on learning and exploration through state-of-the-art exhibits, three times the number of educational classes and workshops, expanded partnerships and extended community outreach.

“We’re just thrilled that any museum as successful as KidsQuest, that deals with the education of children, sought us out,” Whyel said. “It thrills us and adds to the enjoyment.”

The doll museum had been a fixture in Bellevue for 20 years. It closed earlier this year.

As part of the expanded museum, KidsQuest’s new home will feature a rotating exhibit of dolls from the Whyel collection.

And while the exact exhibits have not been decided upon, Whyel said they will be ideal for the museums’s demographic (children 8

The Whyel family will spend the next year documenting the permanent collection in one form or another to serve as a keepsake for both the family and the revamped museum. Whyel has also begun to sell some dolls from the collection.

KidsQuest is in a six month period of site due diligence. The building will be paid for through a combination of short- and long-term financing, and private funds raised through a capital campaign. While the museum hopes to open its new location in 2015, it will take time to raise the money necessary to fund the move and expansion, KidsQuest officials say.

Another concern is the limited parking available at the Whyel building. Bert said the museum will be working with community partners during due diligence to come up with an answer for this problem.

Few turn out as Bellevue begins budget march

The Bellevue City Council got its first feedback during the 2013-2014 budget process, and like the ledger itself, little took shape.

Only three individuals showed up to testify about the budget, which is in its earliest phases, with no concrete proposals offered. This first meeting is not required by state law, but Bellevue traditionally holds a public hearing early in the process to attempt to gather information on public priorities.

Monday night, representatives from the Bellevue

Downtown Association, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and the city’s Probation Advisory Board spoke about the budget. The representatives from the BDA and the chamber argued for the city to keep downtown issues at the forefront, and make business-friendly decisions.

Clark Rice, chair of the parole board, stumped for a specific program that helps people recently released from jail regain their driver’s licenses.

“People need to know how to get driver’s licenses to get to work,” he said. “People who are caught in that circle don’t always know what to do.”

Departments recently submitted their priorities and situations to the budget office, said Budget Manager Toni

Rezab. Budget officials have not yet crunched the numbers, and those results will fully determine if any cuts will need to happen.

Results will be given to City Manager Steve Sarkozy, who will release a budget this fall. Two more public hearings will be held before the end of the process on July 23 and Nov. 19.

City officials said last month that funds within the general budget are in good shape, with revenue and expense close to matching up, but the seven-year capital fund for construction-type projects is facing an extensive shortfall.

According to city figures, through 2019, the capital fund is approximately $31 million short of paying for proposed projects. Though it is early on in the budget process, city officials suggested the council stretch the capital plan out an extra two years, from 2017 to 2019, and use a $22.3 million contingency to cover the rest of the shortfall.

This would leave an extra $19 million for discretionary projects that come up over the years. This figure is roughly in line with the approximately $73 million available for discretionary spending from 2011 through 2017.

Kevin Kelly, spokesman for the Bellevue chamber suggested extending the CIP this year out from seven to 10 years, given looming long-term projects such as East Link light-rail and development of the Bel-Red Corridor. The idea gained traction with several council members.

4 displaced by house fire

Four residents were displaced by a fire at a Bellevue home Monday. The oldest child, an 18-year-old, discovered the fire helped his mother and two brothers evacuate before the home’s smoke detectors activated.

The 18-year-old called 911 at 11:25 p.m., Monday, to report flames visible on the porch of his 3000 square foot home on the 3200 block of 110th Avenue Southeast. In just over six minutes firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the exterior of the home.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within minutes but not before the fire broke a large kitchen window allowing smoke to enter the home.

The residents said they used a gas barbeque on the patio earlier in the day to cook some fish for dinner. Several hours later, while working in the kitchen, the 18-year-old heard crackling sounds coming from the porch. Discovering flames in front of kitchen window, he called 911 as he evacuated his family.

Bellevue fire investigators confirmed the fire started on the porch. The cause of the fire is undetermined. No firefighters were injured. The damage is estimated at $100,000.

Don’t let anger be a deadly choice

T

he Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization did itself a lot of damage nationally with its attempt to pull funding from Planned Parenthood. Locally, the ramifications are being felt as registration for the Race for the Cure event is down by 44 percent.

Those who haven’t signed up as in years’ past may want to make a point, but it’s one that’s hurting women – and men – who benefit from the money Komen raises to fight breast cancer.

About 75 percent of the funds raised by Komen Puget Sound stay here to provide services to underserved and low-income women in Western Washington. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund global research for the cure. None of the funds raised locally support the national Komen organization’s salaries or expenses.

In particular, the funds particularly help those who are low-income, underserved and uninsured.

And, the numbers show the need. Last year, Komen Puget Sound funded 13,000 mammograms through the Washington State Department of Health. Those mammograms discovered breast cancer among 209 women.

There’s no question the race has helped local women. When treated early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98 percent, but later detection drops this to just 23 percent.

Lynda Weatherby, a mom in Sammamish, knows that all-too-well. It’s now been 11 years that her cancer has been in remission, but the she remembers that scary time.

“Getting breast cancer is hard. It’s scary, and there’s no answer to why it happens,” Weatherby said. “One year after I was diagnosed, I told myself I was fine, but still felt raw inside.”

For the past four years she’s been involved in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and this is her second year as a volunteer co-chair.

The Race for the Cure will be June 3. There’s still time for people to sign up and help what is not only a worth cause, but also one that can be a matter of life and death.

Don’t let college graduation suck

C

ollege is fantastic. You live with your friends, study what you enjoy and soak in opportunity like a sunny day in May. Graduating college, however, sucks.

It’s like engagement without a wedding date. People quickly wonder when you’re going to land that first job.

Expectations mount.

College acceptance letters are undoubtedly flooding the mailboxes of accomplished students this month.

Congratulations, their first milestone was a success.

However, what most counselors haven’t told our seniors is that college isn’t always worth it, especially when it means graduating tens of thousands of Celeste Gracey dollars in debt with little prospect for high-wage jobs.

They also won’t tell you that even after four more years of education, most graduates will end up in the same place they started – living in their parents’ basements, unemployed or both. Studies still show that the long-term benefits of college pay out, but today that doesn’t come as easy.

Tuition prices have doubled in the past decade, and heavy unemployment has thousands of college graduates floundering in the real world. I’ve had some colleagues pursue masters degrees, furthering their debt, because they couldn’t find a real job.

I was fortunate enough to catch on to my own blinded views about college bills my freshman year, but not without a lesson learned.

Out of high school, I could have attended any of Washington’s public universities, but I chose a small private college in Portland.

I loved the intimate classrooms and tight-knit community. But a semester in, I began to weigh the cost. To stay in Portland would have meant $50,000 in debt. If I

had chosen computer science or physics, I think I could have swallowed the debt, but (with some exceptions) most journalists aren’t paid much.

So I left the school mid-year and signed up for community college. It was humbling to be in class with Running Start students, but the $3,000 tuition was something my parents and I could afford out of pocket.

My planning didn’t stop there. That first quarter I met with a University of Washington admissions counselor.

When the time came, I had the grades and the prerequisites to make an easy transfer. My entire time in school, I lived at home to avoid dorm fees and costly meal plans.

When I graduated, my only debt was from Portland.

Now a tough word for high school seniors – as tickled as your parents are, your numerous high school accomplishments amount to little in the working world. (This is from someone who graduated with a 3.95 GPA, 1240 out of 1600 on the SATs, numerous extra curriculars and volunteerism.)

In college, high marks can be even less important. You’re better off perfecting a skill or networking. (My first editor couldn’t have cared less about my GPA. He just wanted to know if I could write.) If you’re headed toward a career in liberal arts, let go of your academic pride, and consider a more affordable route to a diploma. College will enlighten you, but it can leave you broke.

Before buying into the glossy pamphlets from your dream university, take the time to estimate your probable debt. Consider the monthly payments. Then take a look at you’re starting pay at the careers your considering.

Work out a budget, before you even decide your major.

It might cause you to reconsider that private school or paying out-of-state tuition. College is wonderful. But make sure graduation doesn’t suck.

gain invaluable clinical experience, save lives, and serve the community.

This is exactly the kind of educational experience we want to provide.”

By taking this next step in their partnership, many more WSU veterinary students will receive handson training at the Humane Society campus in Bellevue starting in May 2013. During their elective two-week rotations, the students will provide a wide range of medical care to the shelter animals, with an emphasis on spay/neuter surgeries, routine exams, vaccinations and other clinical procedures.

The WSU students will also have the opportunity to work with the society’s nationally recognized foster family network, helping the students hone their skills with both people and pets.

“This partnership will benefit the community in so many ways,” Loewe said. “With the veterinary students on board, we will have the capacity to spay and neuter more shelter pets and offer additional medical services to other shelters in need. Ultimately this will reduce the number of unwanted, homeless and stray animals in our community. Our goal, in the end, is to see that every pet is well taken care of, loved and wanted.”

Six months later, Sky Metalwala still missing

It’s been six months since Sky Metalwala disappeared, but the family continues to hope for his safe return.

On May 6, more than 60 people turned out for “A Night for Sky” to support the now 3-year-old boy’s father, Solomon Metalwala.

“We need to keep the story alive,” said Jesse Mayor, a friend of Solomon who is the administrator of the Find Sky Facebook page. “I know that this event is going to keep it in front of people. Everyone has a reach and we need to get everyone to see Sky’s face.”

The event was organized by City Church of Kirkland and Belltown, in Seattle, of which Solomon is a member.

Other than a few media interviews, the cause has been relatively quiet since the last candle-light vigil in downtown Bellevue on Feb. 18.

Sky went missing Nov. 6, 2011, while in the custody of his mother, Redmond resident Julia Biryukova, who has not talked to media or the police about the disappearance. She and Solomon had been in the midst of a bitter divorce and custody battle for their two children.

Biryukova told police her car ran out of

gas the morning of the disappearance, as she attempted to take the boy to the hospital. She said she left the boy in the unlocked car at the 2400 block of 112th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue while she walked with Maile to get help.

When she returned to the car, approximately an hour later, he was gone, according to Biryukova. Police later tested the car and found that it had gas and there were no mechanical issues.

The Bellevue Police Department continues to investigate the case. Anyone with information is urged to call the Bellevue Police tip line at 425-577-5656.

In June, the contractor will start construction on the higher volume roadways. The first will be 156th Avenue Northeast, between Bellevue-Redmond Road and Northeast 28th Street; next, work will begin on 148th Avenue Northeast, between Main Street and Bellevue-Redmond Road. Before paving begins, drivers will see sidewalks and wheelchair ramps replaced along 148th Avenue Northeast.

The greatest traffic impacts will come when the old asphalt is removed and new asphalt is laid down.

Before work begins in a neighborhood, a flyer will be distributed to affected residents and “No Parking” signs will be set up a couple of days beforehand. On major thoroughfares, electronic message signs will alert drivers to upcoming traffic impacts.

In the overlay process, old asphalt is ground down and removed so the new pavement will match the concrete curb and gutter. A week or so later, a paving machine lays down two inches of new asphalt followed by a heavy roller that compacts and presses the asphalt into place.

Since the overlay program began in 1986, more than 600 lane miles of roadway have been repaved. Citywide, there are approximately 942 total lane miles of asphalt roads.

KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE T-Mobile Retired detective takes his skills to private investigations

A man steals hundreds of thousands of dollars from a large airline company where he works. It’s not out of reasons of pure greed, but the need to pay for rising medical bills for his family.

Raj Johal, a retired Bellevue Police detective turned private investigator, understands the plight of the man trying to provide for the family, but he has a job to do.

“He was under a lot of pressure,” Johal said. “He’s a good person, but he succumbed to financial pressures and made some bad decisions and did this over a period of three years.”

The case was one of Johal’s first, and most difficult investigations since he opened his own firm, Be Prepared Investigative Services and Survival Supplies, last fall. The California-born Johal combined his years in the police force, along with his emergency training, to build a business with a wide array of services.

Along with contracting for traditional PI cases, Johal also sells emergency supplies to help people build kits in the case of a disaster. He also served with the city of Bellevue as a compliance officer, giving him a strong knowledge of building code, housing and zoning issues. Johal’s prices depend on the type of case, but his bread and butter, white collar crime investigations, will cost clients approximately $100 an hour.

Johal’s variety of skills and interests date back to his childhood. Growing up in Los Angeles, he was always interested in police work, but another craft lured him as well: acting.

As a child, Johal said he starred in several commercials for Kool-Aid and did a number of infomercials as well. He even rode an elephant in the Disneyland parade. He thought about pursuing acting as a career.

But he was driven by the “service gene” that many in the public sector speak so fondly of.

He had been a Boy Scout and Life Scout, and he enrolled in the Los Angeles Police Academy, where he learned paramilitary training that enhanced his survival skills. Soon after becoming a police officer it became clear he had a knack for interrogation.

He did not play the role of the rough, brash cop often seen on TV, but a sympathetic ear. His acting

T-Mobile USA will shed another 900 jobs in the midst of a massive restructuring.

T-Mobile officials said the job loss will be offset by hiring 550 new employees, primarily in the marketing sector as part of an aggressive advertising campaign.

“While difficult choices had to be made, restructuring our organization will help us better respond to market and customer demands and bring opportunity for continued career development and growth for many of our employees,” T-Mobile Chief People Officer Larry Myers said in a statement.

T-Mobile officials did not respond to followup questions related to which departments would be affected by the job losses, and how many employees from the Bellevue headquarters will be subjected to layoffs. The organizational changes will not affect the technicians in engineering, customer service representatives in the 17 remaining call centers, or front-line retail employees in the company’s stores.

The mobile company, which was set to combine with AT&T before a $39 billion deal fell through, previously announced a decision to close seven of its call centers, resulting in a net loss of 1,900 jobs.

Simultaneously, the company has hired approximately 1,000 people to help prepare and strengthen T-Mobile’s 4G LTE wireless network.

skills came in handy, and Johal presents a comfortable demeanor, which makes an open dialog less painful.

“The goal is to appeal to the goodness of their soul,” said Johal. “In every person there is good, so once you have struck that cord within their soul, you have opened the door of two-way communication. Everyone wants to purge themselves of guilt and wrong doing, and it’s a horrible thing to carry that in your body.”

Johal’s talent became clear during his time in Los Angeles. Johal moved to Bellevue in 1982 to be with his wife and was quickly scooped up by D.P. Van Blaricom, former Bellevue police chief. The chief knew Johal had abilities in pursuing white collar crime. After years of working together on the force, the former chief didn’t hesitate to use Johal’s services when he opened up shop late last year.

“He had always expressed an interest in economic crime and has well prepared himself to professionally assist clients in both victim prevention and recovery of already lost assets,” Van Blaricom said.

“I personally used his services to investigate an elderly lady’s housekeeper, who was stealing from her, and the result was a criminal conviction with a sentence to prison.”

The other half of the business, survival supplies, just came to Johal in a dream.

After visiting family in Utah, he thought of it as a good way to supplement his income while doing investigations. Johal

Johal’s goal to build his one-man operation around a number of sources fits his overall personality of wearing a number of hats. During his 30 years at the city, he not only bounced between a variety of occupations, he even opened a coffee shop in Mill Creek.

“I was a crazy guy, just a workaholic,” he said. “I would get up at 3:30 a.m. and do paper work and go to work at city.”

The company was started by Dan Henderson, a former U.S. Team racer and world champion who has been in the industry for nearly 40 years who said the more expansive Issaquah location on Lake Sammamish has allowed the festival to grow from last year when it was in West Seattle.

“It’s our home,” Henderson said of the Eastside. “We have a population that enjoys being outdoors and active so it’s just a good fit for this.”

Stepping onto a baseball field is no small feat for a female, regardless of age or playing level.

That was proven true again recently when a small, religious-affiliated charter school in Arizona refused to play its state title game because the other team had a female player, choosing instead to forfeit away a chance at a championship.

Interlake and senior pitcher Eleanor Worley are hoping to make their own run at a state baseball championship on Saturday when the 2A tournament begins at Martin Stadium in Bellingham.

They also hope opponents will make the scoreboard the only factor in the Josh Suman result.

Worley first stepped onto a baseball diamond back in second grade and has never looked back. After rising alongside her male peers in the Little League ranks and then biding her time on the Interlake freshman and JV squads, she made the team’s travel roster for last year’s playoffs and was poised to be a contributor this season before an arm injury stole most of her season before it began.

But after rehabbing the injury all year, Worley’s years of dedication were rewarded when she made her first ever varsity start against Juanita in the final home game of her prep career.

She’s heard the jeers and snickers when she takes the mound. But as she has learned, once the bats go quiet, the mouths always follow.

“It really wasn’t any different,” Worley said of pitching in a varsity game. “I’m just focused on doing my job out there.”

Seven innings later, with a mix of frustrating off-speed stuff and plenty of moxie, Worley became the first female in recent memory to record a win in a prep baseball game in Washington, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs in five innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.

Linn said Worley’s most prized attribute on the mound is her resiliency, a trait no doubt bolstered by years of quieting doubters of various forms.

Worley mostly deflected the importance of her participation on the team, thinking it second-nature after a childhood spent doing likewise. She said she never considered playing softball and (like the state of Washington) considers it a different sport entirely.

Above all Worley just wants

to enjoy her time in the game, however long it lasts.

“In the end, it’s about doing a job, not who is out there doing it,” Worley said.

“If someone can play, that is all that matters.”

How to help your child with grief Some children need extra TLC

W

hen death happens to someone close to us, the feelings can be difficult for children of any age to process, especially when violence is involved.

“How much children understand depends on their age and maturity level,” explains Evan Kimble, one of the experienced grief counselors at Youth Eastside Services. “For example, a child who already has lost a family pet may more quickly assimilate what it means when a Patti Skeltonperson dies.”

McGougan No matter the age, experience or personality of your children, there are a few important truths to remember when talking with them about death.

First, do your best to be honest and to create an atmosphere of comfort. Answer questions to the best of your ability — and it’s alright to say “I don’t know.” It’s also an appropriate time to share your spiritual beliefs. Some parents worry about letting

www.bellevuereporter.com their kids see them cry, but allowing them to see your pain shows that it’s a natural reaction to loss.

Because kids may have a hard time understanding the concept of death, it’s best to explain it in their terms. Up to kindergarten or first grade, be very concrete. For example, Mary was hurt so bad that her body stopped working, and doctors couldn’t fix her. Avoid using words like “lost” or “went to sleep.” This will provide expectations that the person can be found or will wake up — or, even worse, make a child fearful of going to sleep.

Between the ages of 6 and 10, kids begin to grasp the finality of death. They are more likely to have nightmares or feel fearful of their own mortality. Extra time together, hugs and listening, combined with simple explanations to questions, are the best approaches.

As kids mature into teens, they realize that every living thing eventually dies. They may also personalize a death more and be fearful of what could happen to them. It may be a good time to remind your teen about ways to stay safe, like never getting in a car with a driver who has been drinking.

As much as possible, encourage your child to participate in normal activities like sports and time with friends. If your child doesn’t seem to rebound and find joy in a reasonable amount of time, it’s a good idea to seek counseling.

As parents, we can’t shield our kids from sadness or loss. But helping them learn to cope with it will build emotional resources they can rely on throughout life.

Farmers Market returns for 9th season

The Bellevue Farmers Market returned for another season May 10.

Held each Thursday from 3-7 p.m. through October at First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, the market is a showcase for growers throughout the state, and a community gathering place during the warmer months.

The market should look familiar to regulars, with the same vendors sticking around for another season, said Lori Taylor, the market’s director. While no new farmers have set up a spot, piemakers from Snohomish County and a new gluten-free

bakery are there. The market has space for about 50 vendors, with a short waiting list for openings.

“We don’t really have room for new farmers because we keep it at a certain amount to make sure people

can do well,” Taylor said.

The market will add a second day, Saturday, starting June 2.

Clayton Burroughs, of Eversonbased Growing Washington Farms, Alm Hill, has been with the market since it began nine years ago. It is one of his biggest sources of income as he knows a certain amount of people will see his offerings every week.

“It’s a great way to connect with an Eastside clientele,” he said. “This has really led to some strong relationships with the customers and the restaurants nearby as well.”

This could be a great year for the market, Taylor said, because the weather cooperated a little better this spring. Cold, harsh, winters followed by more in the spring over the last few years has led to terrible growing conditions. This spring has been kind to the farmers, which will, in turn, lead to happier customers. Taylor said the reputation of the market is still growing. A lot of Bellevue residents still don’t know about the market, but those who do come back every year.

“The markets are amazing because they benefit the small farmer,” Taylor said. “They are able to sell directly to the consumer for top dollar, no middle man.”

Hopelink gala celebrates 40 years in the community

Hundreds turn out to celebrate Cinco De Mayo at Puesta Del Sol More than 800 students, family and friends packed Newport High School’s Performance Hall May 5th to celebrate Puesta Del Sol Elementary’s International Festival, Cinco De Mayo, and the 26th Anniversary of the founding of the Puesta Del Sol Spanish Immersion program.

The evening was highlighted by nearly 20 diverse performance

groups with over 200 students participating, an array of cultural displays and demonstrations, and a feast featuring cuisine from around the globe.

Bellevue School District’s Spanish Immersion program is one of the only programs of its kind in the state of Washington. At Puesta del Sol, students in grades K-5 are immersed in

the Spanish language for most of the day as they study the same curriculum as Bellevue’s other elementary schools.

Students in the immersion program continue together at Tillicum Middle School and Newport High School.

Those that complete the program approach native fluency and earn an International Spanish Academy certificate.

Hopelink will celebrate 40 years of serving local families with an Anniversary Gala in Bellevue on May 19.

Since beginning as a neighbor-to-neighbor jobs program in Bothell in 1971, Hopelink estimates it has provided services to one million people and has become the largest social services agency serving north and east King County.

Through the years, the agency has broadened its focus from emergency intervention to include the longer term support needed by at-risk families and individuals. In 1984, Hopelink opened the first and only emergency shelter for homeless families in north and east King County and later, introduced transitional housing to the community. In 2001, Hopelink merged with Eastside Literacy to help equip adults with the basic literacy skills they need to be better family members, workers and community members.

Today, Hopelink provides an array of social services through more than 35 different programs, including housing, transportation, case management, financial assistance, employment, adult education and literacy training, a vast referral network and five food banks.

The gala at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue begins at 6 p.m. and includes a four-course dinner with hosted wine, music, dancing and live and silent auctions.

Tickets are $150 and all proceeds benefit Hopelink.

Patty Stonesifer, vice chair of the board of regenets for the Smithsonian Instiution will serve as the honorary chair of the evening.

Voices of Bellevue: Josephine Godsey The Bellevue Women’s Club, also called the Bellevue Study Club and the Bellevue Business and Professional Women’s Club, was in operation from the 1920s through the 1970s. Article II of the club’s constitution reads: “This club is constituted for the purpose of fostering and developing [the] best possible social and civic relations between residents of this district and to interest them in all matters and movements that will tend to make living conditions therein clean, healthful and attractive.”

Josephine Godsey, a charter member and the first secretary of the club, gave more details in her 1978 oral history.

Candidates planning to run for office in the Aug. 7 Primary Election for the Nov. 6 General Election must file their paperwork today to get a spot on the ballot.

“If you are considering running for office, our website offers a candidate manual that provides comprehensive information about the process,” said Elections Director Sherril Huff. “Most candidates file online because it’s easy and efficient.”

State Sen. Steve Litzow (R-Mercer Island) filed to run for re-election in the 41st Legislative District. Litzow was first elected in 2010 under a partial term.

He features a bipartisan campaign team of retiring democratic State Rep. Deb Eddy and Bellevue Deputy Mayor Jennifer Robertson.

Litzow has garnered praise from the Municipal League of King County for his bipartisan work on a number of issues. He was the first Republican state senator to announce his support for same-sex marriage.

Litzow’s 41st District colleagues Marcie Maxwell and Judy Clibborn have filed for reelection as well.

Who will fill Eddy’s seat?

Of seats to be determined by Bellevue residents, the most interesting may be the 48th District seat vacated by Rep. Deb Eddy. She is slated to be replaced, and so far only one candidate has filed, Cyrus Habib. Habib is a Bellevue resident, who serves Trustee of the Bellevue College Foundation, a Human Services Commissioner for the city of Bellevue and with Bellevue Rotary and the Overlake Hospital Foundation.

Bellevue’s new congressional district sees first election When the state conducted its redistricting process last year, Bellevue’s Congressional representation changed. Adam Smith has filed for the seat and as of the Reporter’s deadline, had drawn three challengers: Jim Postma, a Republican; Dave Christie, who is a member of the national slate of LaRouche Democrats, a group of candidates who would like to see President Obama impeached and are pushing a return to the Glass Steagall Act, a 1933 set of banking regulations that rose out of the Great Depression; and Tom Cramer, a Democrat.

Postma ran against Smith in 2008, where he lost to the incumbent, gaining just 35 percent of the vote.

BC Rotaract honored

Driver course offered

The Bellevue College chapter of Rotaract received a Rotary International Changemaker Award at Rotary’s District 5030 conference in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho recently.

It’s the first time any Rotaract chapter has received a Rotary award in district history.

Rotaract, part of Rotary International, is a leadership and community service organization for students and young professionals.

The 40 active members of BC’s chapter organized several projects to benefit communities in foreign countries. Most recently, they collected 300 pounds of donations, including school and art supplies, clothes, soccer balls and other items, which were handed out to needy Peruvian children by six members who traveled to the country.

A driver improvement program will be offered by AAA. The course will give practical guidance for traffic accident prevention and enhances driver safety and confidence.

Successful course completion qualifies drivers 55 years of age and over for automobile insurance premium discounts.

The program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7 at Bellevue First United Methodist Church, 1934 108th Ave. NE. Cost is $16.00 per person.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m a Broadway junkie.

Having recently moved back to Washington state from the Big Apple – where I spent most of my Friday nights perusing the Great White Way – good theatre has been something I’ve craved. So when I heard that Village Theatre’s production of “The Producers” would close the 2011/2012 season, I was quick to jump at the chance to review the show.

But for being an arts freak with an unhealthy relationship with Broadway, I must concede, that before being assigned this, I knew little more about Mel Brooks’ award-winning musical than what I read online. What I found upon checking it out on stage was almost three hours of Broadway-caliber talent both clever and magical.

Keeping in line with the original movie and stage productions (which I researched extensively) Village Theatre’s presentation was full of hilariously offensive one-liners and musical numbers both cringe-worthy and enjoyable characteristics I would assume to be

While the focus of the plot is clearly the working relationship between Max Bialystock and accountant-turnedproducer Leo Bloom, I found, that on several occasions, the supporting cast stole the show. I’m a sucker for over-thetop theatrics, and in this vein, the scenes featuring Nick DeSantis as flamboyant Broadway director, Roger DeBris, and Chris Ensweiler’s as DeBris’ daffy assistant, Carmen Ghia, were right up my alley.

Lewis’ superbly comedic take on Franz Liebkind, a former Nazi whose musical about the fallen Führer is targeted by Bialystock and Bloom. A six-foot-tall man wearing Lederhosen could stand on it’s own as one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen; add to the mix Lewis’ exaggerated mannerisms, and I’m about 99.7 percent sure this is the funniest character I’ve ever encountered.

As promised by DeSantis, the “Along Came Bialy” number toward the end of Act I was a moment to relish: 20-odd frisky old maids tapping across the stage with walkers? Yes, please. Trying to figure out which male ensemble members are hiding under those gray wigs and dresses? Even better.

Another high point of the night was the elaborate take on the controversial “Springtime For Hitler” numbers. It’s obvious the set crew saved all the tricks for the climactic show within a show – and the Vegas-style vaudeville act shines in all its glittery glory.

It’s a laugh out loud spectacle you won’t want to miss.

Burglar strikes Medina home, takes jewelry Police are on the lookout for a culprit in a Medina burglary that occurred May 14.

Police said between 9 a.m. and midnight that day, a house in the 800 block of 86th Avenue Northeast was broken into. The thieves broke a small window near the front door that they then used to get inside the house. An unknown amount of jewelry was taken.

Each year, schools from across Washington State apply their musicals for consideration by The 5th Avenue Awards Committee. Evaluators travel across the state to cities as far away as Vancouver, seeking the best actors and actresses, directors and designers to represent their schools in the annual event.

During the past school year, The 5th Avenue Theatre sent teams of theater professionals to evaluate each school’s production across 21 categories, ranging from best lobby display to best overall musical production. For the 2011-12 high school theater season, 191 nominations and 99 honorable mentions were given to the 93 productions.

This year, an estimated 2,100 high school students are expected to attend, along with their families and friends.

Among those being recognized are a handful of students from the Bellevue school district: Jack Holmes of the International School (Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Jack in “Into The Woods); Debbie Roberts of the International School (Outstanding Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Non-Singing Role, Honorable Mention, Steward in “Into the Woods”); and Ben Kadie, of Interlake High School (Special Honors: Student Achievement).

...obituaries Richard “Dick” Martell Richard “Dick” Martell died peacefully with his family by his side, on May 2, 2012, due to complications from MS. He was 66 years old.

He is survived by his daughters Tina Lannoye (Brian) and Bonnie MartellJohnson; grandchildren Morgan and Natalie Lannoye and Tyssen Martell; his mother, Bernadette Martell; brother, Raymond Martell (Susie) and fatherin-law, Gordon Bullamore (Joyce). Dick also leaves behind a large extended family of nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends that were considered “family”.

Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Janet Bullamore; father, Harvey Martell; brother, Robert “Bob” Martell;son-in-law,Major Johnson,and dear mother-in-law,Florence Bullamore.

Dick was born in Long Beach, CA to Bernadette “Penny” and Harvey Martell, on November 4, 1945. He was raised on Three Tree Point, in Burien, WA and graduated from Highline High School in 1963. It was in high school that he met his soul mate and wife, Janet Bullamore. They married on June 4, 1965.

Dick pursued a career in Radiologic Technology and graduated from University of Washington. He took a position as Chief Technologist and ran the X-ray department at University of Washington Medical Center, before taking a job that moved him and Janet to San Jose, CA. Dick was the Administrator for the Radiology Dept. at Valley Medical Center, in San Jose.

He and Janet had 2 daughters in 1971 & 1974. Over the years they made lots of lifelong friends and memories, including hosting an annual Luau, complete with pig roast on a homemade spit, in their backyard.

Dick and Janet longed to be back home, in the Seattle area, so when a job opportunity came up, Dick took it. In July 1980, Dick and Janet packed up the family and moved “home” to Washington state. They settled in Redmond and finished raising their 2 daughters.

Dick was the Administrator for Eastside Radiology, in

Bellevue. He worked for them until retiring in 1992, due to his MS limitations. When Dick’s MS started getting worse, he and Janet had a wheelchair accessible house custom built for him, in Covington, in 1998. They lived in this house until Janet suddenly and unexpectedly passed in 2009. After her passing, Dick resided at Arbor Village Assisted Living, in Kent.

Janet was his high school sweet heart, his soul mate. When she passed, Dick’s MS started another downward slide. He was never the same. He missed his “Jani-Sue”. We all feel comforted now in knowing that he is back with her now.

Dick enjoyed a lifelong passion of boating. He and Janet spent countless weeks boating around the US and Canadian San Juan Islands. They often took many friends and family along on their excursions, savoring the beautiful Pacific NW waters and fresh seafood. When they weren’t boating, they were still with family and friends, just doing other exciting adventures.

Family was very important to Dick. His daughters have fond memories of family vacations skiing in Breckenridge, CO, snorkeling in Hawaii, River rafting down the Rogue River, water skiing on Lakes Sammamish and Washington, and camping in the motor home at Lake Chelan and Cannon Beach.

Dick was known as “the life of the party”, and most well known for his endless catalog of jokes. He made friends everywhere he went, but had many special “groups” of friends: a couple of great guys from high school, who also shared his passion for boating. “The Cool Clinic”, from his college days, some from his days at “Valley Med”, from his neighborhood in Redmond, the “S.P.E.R.M.” group from his RBMA days, and some from various travels. He loved surrounding himself with people.

He was a great husband and dad. A wonderful role-model of a gentleman for his daughters. He was always supportive of his kids’ activities, whether it was soccer or ballet. His loud booming voice could always be heard from the sidelines and audience, and it sometimes got him into trouble!

His big smile and laugh will be forever missed, but we know he is once again, happy.

There will be a funeral Mass for Dick on Saturday, May 19, 1:00 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church, 505 17th St. SE, Auburn.

Colonel Robert John Kuehn, Sr. (U.S. Air Force, Retired)

A member of the Greatest Generation, Colonel Robert John Kuehn, Sr. (USAF Ret) passed away May 4, 2012. Bob was born May 17, 1915 in Menominee MI and lived in Fond du Lac WI. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and retired from the USAF as a full Colonel in 1975. His career included assignments around the globe in the intelligence, communications and electronics fields. Highlights of Col. Kuehn’s career included intelligence officer duty in Europe during WW II where he interrogated enemy pilots; Electronic Systems Division in MA where he helped develop the first defense computer system; and the Military Assistance Command in Thailand where he supported the Vietnam War. His last assignment was as ESD Detachment Commander in Germany. Colonel Kuehn’s decorations include: the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal, WW II Victory Medal, and other campaign medals.

Bob met and married Mary Salatino, an Army nurse, at Paine Field,WA, in 1943.They both did war duty in England. In 1975 they retired to Bellevue, where Bob was active in the Sons of Italy Lodge and 55th Fighter Group Association. Bob was preceded in death by Mary, parents and siblings. Unity of Bellevue held a Mother/Daughter Luncheon on May 12, raising money to help support the interfaith nonprofit organization, The Sophia Way. Approximately 60 women attended the event, including a family of four generations: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and daughter.

Amidst a variety of girly decorations – including vintage hats, beaded dresses, antique umbrellas and purses - guest speaker Karina O’Malley shared some stories about some of the women that Sophia Way has helped.

This summer the Woodmark Hotel, Yacht Club & Spa’s latest program, “Bee on the Lake,” will give residents a chance to taste a batch of honey produced by 180,000 Italian honeybees and six queen bees housed near the property.

Once settled in, it is expected that the six hives of bees, which are located on top of a Carillon Point rooftop near the Woodmark, will begin producing honey around mid-July. At the end of production in September, the Woodmark will have approximately 1,200 pounds of honey to work with, and with that impressive number in mind, has already begun planning how to best use the locally-produced product.

Leo Lover is probably one of the most affectionate cats you’ll ever meet. Leo was rescued by a Purrfect Pals volunteer after he turned up at a feral feeding station.

He’s probably about three years old. Leo is a little shy around all the other cats in our adoption room, but he’d probably be fine around one or two mellow cats.

It’s not known if he’s ever met a dog. Leo is up for adoption at Purrfect Pals Cat Shelter’s offsite adoption center inside Bellevue Petsmart (100 108th Ave N.E, near Toys ‘R Us).

Every couple of weeks, Giordan and Sullivan will slip on beekeeper suits to harvest the honey. This involves puffing smoke into the hives to encourage the bees to exit, and then scraping the honeycomb to release the golden honey.

The process is not an easy one, involving cleaning and filtering the honey many times over before it is ready for consumption, but the end product is worth it.

Morris is a male domestic long hair that likes to be scratched behind his ears and loves gentle pets down his back all the way to his tail. Morris can get a bit scared at times and will need some time and patience to warm up.
