It is my pleasure to welcome the return of the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) to Renton for a second year. On behalf of the Renton Community Marketing Campaign, which includes the Renton Chamber of Commerce/ Renton Visitors Connection, Renton School District, Renton Technical College, Valley Medical Center and the City of Renton, we welcome SIFF and we encourage everyone to attend the festival

We are very excited that SIFF is returning again this year for a week-long screening of films at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, May 18-24. SIFF is the longest-running, largest and most highly attended film festival in the United States and we are very fortunate that Renton is part of the action and hosting the festival. SIFF allows us to showcase Renton as a great place to live, work, learn and play, a city with a thriving arts and culture scene, and a diverse community that fosters cross-cultural understanding.

We are grateful that the SIFF-Renton Host Committee is once again co-chaired by Renton resident Meeghan Black of KING 5’s “Evening Magazine” and Brad Brotherton, president of Brotherton Cadillac Buick GMC. They are joined by leaders of the community who have been working hard to promote SIFF in Renton. SIFF-RENTON Renton, for the second year, is a venue for the Seattle International Film Festival, the nation's longest-running and best-attended festival that celebrates cinema.

This film guide includes the showtimes and the previews for the 18 films that will screen at the IKEA Performing Arts Center at Renton High School May 18-24.

SIFF to feature 700 screenings, 24 world premieres, diversity There are so many things to be excited about this year, from the opening of our SIFF Film Center, to the re-opening of the historic Uptown Cinema.

SIFF, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Festival, now reaches more than 250,000 attendees annually (and growing) through our three main programs SIFF Cinema, SIFF FutureWave Education and the annual Seattle International Film Festival.

And now, with this year’s Seattle International Film Festival, we will screen 273 features and 187 shorts, representing 75 countries chosen from more than 5,676 submissions worldwide.

While it was never our focus to secure a set number of premieres, we will debut a record 24 World Premiere Features. There will be 180 features at this year’s Festival arriving without U.S. distribution in place and 85 films by female filmmakers, up from 62 last year.

This is the first time in SIFF’s history that we will have the opportunity to show films on multiple screens in a single location, allowing us to present the most wide-ranging and diverse selection of films possible, with more than 700 screenings over the 25 days of the festival. It is another first to open and close with bona fide Seattle productions; "Your Sister’s Sister" on Opening Night and the World Premiere of "Grassroots" on the Seattle International Film Festival

Better than ever.

That's the way the managing director of the Seattle International Film Festival, Deborah Person, describes the return engagement of SIFF-Renton.

"It was a great start," says Person.

The famed international festival, now in its 38th year, chose Renton last year to become its third suburban venue. SIFF was drawn to the city's diversity, a reflection of the festival's own diverse world of filmmaking.

The director of the openingnight film was drawn to Renton, too.

The festival at the IKEA Performing Arts Center opens Friday, May 18, with the screening of "Fat Kid Rules the World," a coming-of-age film partly

filmed in Renton. Some scenes were filmed at Lindbergh High School; about 100 students and some community members were extras.

The screening is followed by the opening-night gala at the Renton Pavilion Event Center.

Tickets are $25 for the screening and the party.

"We want to throw a great party on May 18," says Suzanne Dale Estey, the city's economic development director.

Last year's, says Dale Estey, was probably the biggest party Renton has ever seen.

Just like a Hollywood opening, the carpet is red and there's a SIFF backdrop for photographs with VIPs. PeaceMaker Nation will again provide the entertainment.

Food and drink – beer and wine – are included in the ticket price. Providing the food are

Melrose Grill, Rain City Catering, Naan N Curry, Blossom Vegetarian, Torero's Mexican Restaurant, Tea Palace, Peyrassol Café and Bistro Box. SIFF-Renton offers Renton a chance to showcase itself.

"Hosting SIFF will draw thousands of visitors into Renton from throughout the region and the world to experience our city, restaurants, hotels and other businesses," says Dale Estey.

The Renton Community Marketing Campaign is partnering with SIFF with several goals in mind, she said – building on Renton's economic momentum, helping bring visitors and business to downtown Renton and Renton's hotels and promoting arts and culture, as well as cultural understanding.

"This is a huge opportunity for the community," says Dale Estey.

Purchase single tickets Anyone can attend a film at the Festival! Tickets for most films are $11, but there are always discounts for matinees, students, seniors, and SIFF members. A pass for all screenings in Renton is $100.

FILM TERMS Seattle International Film Festival

Sometimes you want to know what that film fanatic two rows behind you is talking about, and sometimes you SIFF-RENTON know people are listening to you and you want to sound smart.

No problem! We’ve pulled a list of film terms for you to use or abuse.

Seattle International Film Festival

Auteur – Like so many of the fancy film terms, this one has French origins.

It translates to “author,” and it describes a singular creative vision that can be discerned from creative work over the course of a career. Usually the author is the director, sometimes it’s the pro-

ducer, but strangely enough it’s almost never the writer.

Cinematographer – Also known as the Director of Photography, or DP. It’s the person behind the camera who sets up and frames the gorgeous shots that the director will eventually get credit for.

Director – The person responsible for the overall look and feel of a movie, and who does so by working with actors and key crew members. Rightly or wrongly, the director gets the lion’s share of the credit when a movie works and all of the blame when it doesn’t.

Documentary – A movie that captures real people in existing situations, with a script that is often developed after everything is shot. Documentaries, also called “non-fiction films,” illuminate the world we live in.

Dubbing – The often-derided practice of replacing the dialog in a foreign film with that of the native country.

When done poorly (’70s chop-sockey films) it is as ridiculous as it is hilarious; when done well (post-war Italian films) it is an art form.

Genre – A fancy way to describe a type of film. Common film genres include musical, science fiction, swashbuckler, western, and horror. Less common genres include the inventor comedy, Viking road movie, financial ghost story, and animal actor films.

Mise-en-scène – Pronounced meez-ahn-sehn, it’s another French term, and it translates to “what is put into the scene.” It describes what can be seen by the camera during a shot and is often used when describing a long take. It is in sharp contrast to the idea of montage.

Montage – The editing or “assembling” of shots together in order to compress time. In a romantic comedy, the montage is when the couple are seen falling in love over the course of a trendy pop song.

Producer – The person who is in charge of money, which means it’s the person who has the most power on a

film. Complicating matters is the fact that there are many different producers on a film, some who raise the money and others who approve how the director spends it.

Screenwriter – The screenwriter writes the dialog that the actors speak and describes the scenes that the director shoots. The screenwriter regularly gets the least amount of credit for a successful film. See also “auteur.”

Shot – While filming, a shot is the length of film from the time the camera is turned on to the time it’s turned off.

In a finished film, a shot is the length of film between edits. Up until the ’60s, the average shot length in a feature film was eight to 11 seconds; since then it’s been cut in half, with movies like Quantum of Solace averaging less than two seconds per shot.

Video – Technology that was initially going to be the downfall of the theatrical experience, but because of the increased quality of projection and the lower cost of shooting and editing, the technology that has become the savior of independent filmmaking.

Volunteers are needed to keep the screenings running smoothly during the six-day run of the Seattle International Film Festival in Renton.

There is SIFF-Renton volunteer training at 6:30 p.m. May 16 at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, 400 S. Second St. Volunteer opportunities are broad, from ticket takers at the screenings to helping distribute SIFF posters and magazines to local businesses and residents.

Other volunteer opportunities in Renton include event assistance with the Opening Night Screening and Gala on May 18, creating SIFF displays in vacant storefronts, and organizing community events in conjunction with the films.

It's been a dark and stormy night.

It's been a curve ball thrown with abandon.

It's been sheer exhaustion, writer's block and even failure.

Such is the Renton FilmFrenzy and for the fifth year, filmmakers will compete in October to win the prize, the coveted Curvee award.

Anything that takes 50 hours non-stop certainly qualifies as epic. And that's one way to describe this filmmaking competition that continues to grow in films, audience and stature in Renton.

Planning is well under way for FilmFrenzy V. "We're putting together a strong group of high-caliber judges and some fun CurveBall challenges, and we are continuing to expand our marketing efforts to generate more entries into the competition, both from the Renton community and from well beyond Renton," said Suzanne Dale Estey, the City of Renton's economic development director.

And she sees the positive effect that the Seattle International Film Festival is having on FilmFrenzy.

"It's fun to see how our efforts with SIFF and its global reach are strengthening our annual filmmaking competition," she said.

The basics of the filmmaking competition are simple.

Starting at 5 p.m. on Friday,

Oct. 5, filmmakers will have 50 hours to write, shoot, edit and turn in a four-minute film shot entirely in Renton.

Right before the competition begins, the filmmakers will receive an email with the CurveBall Challenge. The CurveBall is a line of dialogue, a specific task and/or a location in Renton they must include in their film.

Filmmakers can choose any movie genre, but whatever is chosen must be appropriate for

important frenzy dates • All films will be shown during the Renton FilmFrenzy Screening from 7-9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, at the Renton Civic Theater, 507 S. Third St. • The top films will be screened during the Curvee Awards Gala on Oct. 23, at
