Acclaimed speaker Rory Vaden is taking a bus tour across the country to raise money for education and teach Americans about the key to success: selfdiscipline. A suggested donation of $10 will benefit school clubs and activities.

Vaden will teach principles of success from his book “Take the Stairs: 7 Steps to Achieving True Success.” Rosemarie Burke, FWHS dean of students, invited Vaden to the city after taking the school’s softball team to hear him speak.

“You just feel reassured that you’re strong enough to make it,” she said of Vaden’s inspirational message. “Kids need a vision for their lives. That’s what we need to do as educators.”

Fat check: Report examines city’s health

Federal Way has the third highest adult obesity rate in King County, with 28.1 percent of adult residents falling into that classification.

The finding was one of many

shared with the city in a Food Landscape report compiled by Urban Food Link, a policy and planning consulting firm based out of Seattle. It’s all part of Federal Way’s participation in the county’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program, which

is aimed at increasing the health of King County residents.

Along with the obesity statistic, the Food Landscape report also found that: • More than 87 percent of Federal Way’s land base is more than half a mile from a supermarket

• There are low-income areas in Federal Way that are not within feasible walking distance of a supermarket (i.e., half a mile) • There are nearly four times as many fast food restaurants and convenience stores compared to [ more HEALTH, page 13 ]

Pink slime: Federal Way Abusive girlfriend knocks school lunches steer clear boyfriend’s tooth loose

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that schools receiving food through the government’s school lunch program will be allowed to reject beef that is partially made of an ammonia-treated artificial filler.

Known unofficially as “pink slime,” the filler is officially referred to as “lean, finely textured beef.”

According to the USDA, the filler “is a meat product derived from a process which separates fatty pieces from beef trimmings to reduce the overall fat content.”

Opponents of the filler cite the fact that as part of the process, the filler is subjected to a dose of ammonium hydroxide, which is used to ensure that pathogens, such as E. coli and salmonella, are destroyed.

nity relations specialist for Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS), said the district is aware of the issues surrounding lean finely textured beef. FWPS is part of a co-op in Western Washington with various other school districts. So far, there is no indication that the beef is being used in local districts.

“The Nutrition Services staff has been tracking where it comes from, and so far, every product they checked on doesn’t contain it,” Stenberg said.

FWPS contracts through the aforementioned co-op with Food Services of America. The Mirror sent an email to FSA for comment, and had not received a response.

According to Nathan Olson, spokesman for the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), their office is unaware of any schools or districts using the offending material

in their school lunches.

“The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is not aware of any schools using lean finely textured beef. Districts can purchase beef through a number of sources, though, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a state or local co-op or commercially. Districts aren’t required to report where their beef was purchased to OSPI,” Olson said.

OSPI indicated that one of the state’s main food and meat processors does not use the “pink slime.”

“One of the state’s major processors, Kings Command, has written a letter stating that it does not use that particular beef in its manufacturing. But OSPI cannot with certainty say that there is no lean finely textured beef in Washington state schools,” Olson said. “The USDA continues to affirm the safety of lean finely textured beef for all consumers.”

The USDA notes that “on average, schools in the National School Lunch Program purchase approximately 20 percent of their food through USDA, and approximately 80 percent of food served is purchased directly by schools or school districts through private vendors.”

The change from the USDA comes after numerous school districts across the country petitioned for more choice when it comes to their beef purchases through the federal agency.

answered it, while they were still in the gym. The suspect promptly hung up the phone and turned it off, making it impossible for the owner to track by GPS. • Vicodin stolen: At 7:26 p.m.

March 16 in the 2800 block of South 299th Place, a woman reported that a prescription of Vicodin had gone missing. According to the report, the woman believed someone who lived with her may have taken the medication, but could not substantiate the claim.

• Idiot drivers find each other: At 10:39 p.m. March 16 in the 3500 block of SW 340th Street, two vehicles were involved in an accident. According to the police report, the drivers of both vehicles were driving with suspended licenses.

• Irate man at Old Country Buffet: At 3:18 p.m. March 17 in the 1800 block of South 320th Street, management at the Old Country Buffet contacted police about a man who was being belligerent in the restaurant. Police arrived, and the man continued to be defiant. He was eventually taken into custody and booked for obstruction.

According to the report, it appeared that nothing of substantive value was taken, and it was unclear how entry was made.

These heroes save lives and also give back to the Federal Way community in many ways. Now it is time for us to give back to them.

Sex in the Suburbs

First, I truly believe that having a dad-daughter dance is lovely. Taking time to connect and tell your daughter how much she means to you is admirable and something more parents should take time to do.

But taking a pledge to guard her virginity may sabotage your most sincere intentions. Here’s why.

Purity balls have become popular in response to the sexualization of young people in our culture.

Usually sponsored by Christian groups, these events showcase dads and daughters, who come together for a formal event where the dad pledges to guard his daughter’s purity and/or virginity with a formal vow, and a ring, bracelet or necklace for her to wear as a reminder.

Sounds lovely, right? But here’s the deal. By putting emphasis on your daughter’s virginity as something that needs guarding, you are sending a message that a) her sexuality (virginity) is the focus of her value, and b) she needs a man to make her decisions for her.

Taking a pledge with witnesses may help delay onset of sexual intercourse for a few percentage points of teens, but it’s not enough.

Several long-term national studies of thousands of youth have found: • 90 percent of girls who pledge abstinence until marriage do not keep that promise.

• Those who have taken a purity/virginity pledge have significantly lower rates of condom and birth control use when they do have sex.

• Teens who take abstinence pledges have similar rates of STDs as those who don’t, despite delaying onset of intercourse and having fewer partners.

• Teens who take a virginity/purity pledge are more likely to engage in oral and anal sex than those who do not, often thinking these activities do not “count” as losing their virginity.

Statistics aside, think about how, as parents, we often hope for our children to have better experiences than we had as teenagers.

Yet, we can’t be there 24/7, 365 days a year. As they get older, they make more of their own decisions, whether we like it or not. What we can rely on is what we’ve taught them. So for heaven’s sake, please teach your daughters (and sons) about how to love safely.

Giving information about condoms, birth control and pleasurable activities other than oral, anal or vaginal intercourse could keep them healthy — and it will arm them with accurate information for their peers, who may not hold the same values your family does. Talking often about values and relationships and standards can help your teen and others. [ more JOHNSON page 12 ]

Strange bedfellows in politics Sen. Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch) has always been very conservative. Even though he usually votes with the Democrats on process matters, he can’t be counted on for policy issues. That is why Democrats were glad when they got to 27 votes, as it gave them a two-vote cushion. Or at least they thought it did.

Sen. Rodney Tom (D-Bellevue) used to be a Republican and switched parties. The Democrats were glad to have him because of the cushion his vote helped provide. Tom lost some credibility in his new party two years ago when he helped write the Democratic budget and then voted against it. Some speculated that Tom saw the Eastside starting to slide toward the Democrats and wanted to get ahead of the curve by switching parties. Others believe he is comfortable with most Democratic viewpoints, but is still conservative on fiscal matters.

Sen. Jim Kastama (D-Puyallup) was a bigger surprise. Not that he would consider supporting a Republican budget, but he had already announced he was running for Secretary of State.

The applause you hear is from Democratic contenders Greg Nickels and Kathleen Drew, who are also running for Secretary of State and are the likely beneficiaries of primary Democratic voters who might have gone for Kastama.

While Kastama might be trying to distance himself from the party to attract independent voters, it seems more likely this will have a negative impact on his campaign.

Republicans were calling it a bipartisan budget. Since it was done with three Senators who were AWOL, that was probably a stretch. That is how it will get played during the upcoming [ more ROEGNER page 12 ] Bob Roegner

The Legislature has proven the old saying that politics makes strange bedfellows.

Three Senate Democrats voted with Senate Republicans on a procedural motion to pass a budget and send it to the House.

This resulted in a stalemate that led to the current special session.

With the Democrats holding a 27-22 advantage in the Senate, the switch temporarily gave Republicans a 25-24 majority. Since the Republican budget was partially balanced by subtracting money from K-12 and higher education, it was predictably not well received in the House, where Democrats hold a 56-42 majority.

The Senate Republican motion came as something of a surprise to majority Democrats late on a Friday night without a public hearing.

Some Democrats were aware what was up, but had not seen the proposal.

As of this writing, both houses are trying to find a compromise that Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire won’t veto.

There are two competing philosophies in play. Republicans want additional cuts in state government now, and would like to see those cuts become permanent in future state budgets.

Democrats believe that many state services have already been cut too deeply over the last three budget cycles, and would like to retain the current, although diminished, level of service.

The bigger story, and the one that will play out over a longer time frame than the budget, is the switch of the three Democratic Senators.

They didn’t switch parties. They only voted with the Republicans on the budget and will likely do so again. But the effect is to align themselves with interests counter to their party’s rank-andfile goals. Many Democrats are not happy.

starting to affect emergency responses and the ability to provide local service.

The loss of nearly 23 percent of our fire department’s revenue has caused the department to allow 23 vacated positions; close one aid car; reduce a second aid car to part-time status; eliminate public education programs; and reduce staff and programs across the board. Our fire department is

looking to make even more cuts if we cannot help their current financial situation.

This is where we come in. Our vote for our fire department on April 17 will ensure that no additional personnel or program losses occur, and one of the closed aid cars will be put back into service. This will help us all with improved emergency responses.

Our fire department is only ask-

That aside, if you can, let’s review South King Fire and Rescue’s position with some scrutiny.

How does not getting this $3.5 million increase mean that between 20 and 25 firefighters could be laid off? Those number do not pass the smell test.

Staffing levels are based on current revenues. But now we are to believe maintaining current revenues equals an additional loss of between 20 and 25 firefighters?

Really? I am always impressed when fear tactics are thrown out in the name of public safety.

Now we are being told that failure of an additional $3.5 million in revenue means the loss of 20 to 25 firefighters? In the next two years?

How does this new math work out? Passage of the excess levy will require the hiring of nine firefighters (this increases headcount, not reduces it). Some funds will be used for building maintenance and capital equipment (none of this goes to keeping firefighters).

The remaining $500,000 covers that unfunded budget drain of a training center property ($5 million spent with $230,000 per year in unadulterated debt) and adds one training officer, for a total of 10 projected new employees.

Nothing about this excess levy is meant to retain “between 20 and 25 firefighters.” But don’t let that stop the district from using this as a fear tactic to get the levy passed. None of the budget models or forecast information presented by the fire district

indicate gross reductions to future revenues, indeed most indicated we are at or near the low. Meaning revenues are either fixed or could see negligible decreases. Or that revenues could actually increase within the next two to four years.

But to the public, he presents some different “facts.”

With over 100 current firefighters in the district, I for one find it extremely difficult to believe the chief when he states failure of passing an excess levy could mean that 20 to 25 firefighters may be laid off by the end of 2013.

It does mean that even though our firefighters have taken pay freezes for the past two years, some members of the fire department can and do continue to ignore the budget crisis, and get paid for attending recognition ceremonies, mileage for going to meetings and meals at specially scheduled dinner meetings.

Troubles with the medical bureaucracy We thought dealing with the IRS was tough? Try dealing with Medicare as a “provider.” Federal Way Family Physicians is a small family medical practice. Due to a recent bureaucratic screwup, Medicare didn’t pay us for services for about two months.

(Small businesses, like families, need cash flow, otherwise — well I don’t want to think of that.)

We were quite frantic and frustrated trying to straighten it out and the Medicare employees

in South Dakota became progressively less helpful and surly. We were backed into a bureaucratic corner with seemingly no resolution in sight.

What can we do? Let’s call Sen. Tracey Eide. Within minutes, she and her chief of staff, Peter Dodds, had contacted Medicare and enlisted the help of Congressman Adam Smith. His chief of staff, Wendy Morris, likewise contacted Medicare and between them lit a fire under the right people. We were assigned one Medicare representative who was not only efficient and helpful, she was actually nice. Within days, the red tape was being shredded, and within a week the issue was resolved. It looks like we will get reimbursed. Working for free may be honorable, but doesn’t meet payroll. Kudos to Sen. Eide and Congressman Smith, and many thanks to their capable staff. It is great to have them in our corner when needed. It is only unfortunate that our bureaucracy is so big that federal employees lose sight of their purpose and mission, and who pays their salaries.

Cottage housing hurts Mirror Lake I, as a Mirror Lake resident, am outraged that you gave Bill McCaffrey a half page of free advertising for his proposed cottage housing project. This has been a contentious proposition from the start, and will continue to be so until he can demonstrate

to the satisfaction of Mirror Lake residents that the project will not adversely affect the quality of Mirror Lake.

As your article points out, he hopes to “pioneer” a type of housing in South King County. His pioneering spirit may be laudable, but for a new type of high density residential community, his choice of site is exceptionally flawed.

The site is on a hill directly above Mirror Lake, which drains straight into the lake. The lake is spring fed, and the residents have worked diligently over the years to protect and improve the quality of the water.

This proposed high density residential development on a hill above the lake, with its inherent erosion issues, is a serious threat to the quality of the lake.

The developer’s concept of using rain gardens and “low-impact development” for water retention is fine in the planning, but we have not seen a plan for maintenance of such gardens or enforcement of the drainage controls after the developer is long gone.

We are also concerned about control of erosion during construction, after the site is logged off. It is currently a heavily wooded site, which protects the lake from runoff. The removal of these large trees would leave the site open to draining sediment straight into the lake, affecting water quality and permanently raising lake levels. And the city’s current requirements regarding replacing the trees are not adequate to replace the erosion

protection that the current tree density offers.

All of these factors threaten our lake quality, and we will be forced to live with the repercussions of this development long after the developer is gone. The residents of Mirror Lake see this proposed high density development as a direct threat to this lake. Such threat could be avoided by siting this “pioneer” project in a less ecologically sensitive area.

She will fight for jobs, local businesses, public education and for struggling families.

Ceramic artist envisions thriving scene in FW

Charan Sachar, a ceramic artist based in Federal Way, will have his work featured at a number of different outlets in the upcoming

weeks.

Currently, his work is being featured at the Nordstrom in downtown Seattle. His piece “Feet of Clay” is an example of the handcrafted ceramic work known as Mojari, from

India.

Along with this, Sachar will hold an open studio tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

March 31 and April 1. It’s open to everyone interested in watching ceramics being brought to life. The studio

is located at 32706 5th Ave. in Federal Way. This open studio, along with his work being featured in many places in the weeks to come, is something Sachar hopes can bring the artistic community together in

“Artists are everywhere and I am sure there are plenty in Federal Way,” Sachar said. “I was very glad to see the sand sculptures national champions in Federal Way, so we are headed in the right direction. I am hoping that by seeing my work and studio, there is more appreciation of handcrafted work and encouragement to other artists in the area to come together and pursue their artistic passions.”

According to Sachar, he was a software engineer until he became a full-time potter in January 2011.

He’s been featured in the New York Times, and his techniques were featured in a 2006 telecast of Home and Garden Television’s “That’s Clever.”

Upcoming events featuring his work include the Potters Council Exhibit, which is being held at the Seattle Convention Center from March 28-30. His work will make an appearance at the ArtEast Gallery in Issaquah, and also at the

Having to spread himself around so much is part of his reason for trying to raise awareness of the local arts/ handcrafts scene, Sachar said.

“I have been in the Federal Way area for 12 years now and see the lack of artist-related events. I have always had the need to go to Seattle, Tacoma or Bellevue to participate in events, such as studio tours or art walks,” Sachar said.

Sachar envisions Federal Way becoming a home to a thriving art scene, he said.

“It would be good to have gallery/gift stores that carry handcrafted work in the Federal Way area. It is unique shops and stores like these which make a community stand out.

Every city has the big chain stores, but we can make Federal Way stand out. I hope this would bring the artist community together in Federal Way, so we can have our own art walks in the summer,” Sachar said.

Following retirement, she moved to the family home on the coast where she stayed active in local politics and social issues.

According to school district officials, SBE is meant to ensure that students master required skills, and that a clearer picture of a student’s progress can be developed. SBE coincides with an accelerated academics policy that allows more students, including students of color, to enroll in higher-level courses.

Sequoyah is the only school in the district with this particular history project, and all of the school’s eighth-graders participate.

Sound Transit will add one morning peak hour trip for one of the busiest bus routes from Federal Way to Seattle.

Starting in June, ST Express Route 577 will feature one additional morning trip to Seattle.

For many of the Senate Democrats, these three will continue to be suspect. There isn’t much the Democrats can do because their majority will likely continue to be slim after the elections this fall — assuming that they retain control of the Senate, which might be open to question.

Not only did the Republicans pull off a procedural victory by getting the three Democrats, but they were also playing the chess game by looking several moves ahead. Once the Democrats realized what was going on and that they would lose 25-24, they likely started looking for a Republican vote to make a deal. But the Republicans were a step ahead. Republican State Sen. Pam Roach, who was asked to leave the Republican caucus a few years ago for behavior issues, was the logical place to look. The Republicans had already invited her to return from the cold and rejoin the caucus.

The other part of the chess game was that the Republicans never really intended to cut K-12 or

line before sunrise, often waiting through one or two boardings before scoring a seat.

At the Sound Transit board meeting March 22, board member and King County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer expressed appreciation to Federal Way leaders for encouraging more bus service during busy commutes from Federal Way to Seattle.

“I appreciate Sound Transit’s response to my request that we try to better meet the needs of the riders in Federal Way, and the work to make efficiencies in the bus system and reallocate resources to where they are most needed,”

The Republican cuts were intended to establish a bargaining position that would force compromise. The Republicans’ real targets were state employees and the pension system. They want to skip a payment to the pension system and reduce future benefits. It’s an election year, and that’s not a position the Democrats are likely to be comfortable with because state employees unions tend to support Democrats.

Now the challenge is to find the right formula that will result in compromise.

For future reference, you might want to keep track of how the three Democrats get along with the rest of their party and how much the Republicans embrace the returning Roach.

These shootings are not the first time Leitgab’s behavior on the job has been questioned.

In 2007, Leitgeb’s joke about a hand grenade set off a media frenzy.

During a traffic stop, officers found a pineapple-style grenade inside a suspect’s vehicle. A state trooper on the scene overheard Leitgeb joke with a Federal Way colleague that the suspect was on his way to the federal building with the grenade. The comment made its way up the chain of command, unleashing multiple inquiries from the press about a possible attack on the Federal Building in Seattle.

According to a police report, Leitgeb admitted to the untruthful comment. The case was closed, with a recommendation for counseling for Leitgeb.

Leitgeb has previously received a 30-hour suspension, according to police, with those records still awaiting release. To read commendations from Leitgeb’s personnel file, see this story online. In one letter, a citizen complimented Leitgeb’s professionalism in handling a theft incident.

Janet Shull, senior planner for Federal Way, said the next steps to be taken will mostly be done through the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning codes, but any noticeable changes are still a bit off.

“The council directed staff to go forward and look at these recommendations

What most of Shull’s work will entail is making sure the city establishes protocol for food access issues within city code.

“Community gardens, urban agriculture, pea patches… Our comprehensive plan and zoning codes don’t address food access at all. It is problematic because if folks want to do things, like community gardens, we have to go to the zoning code to see if it’s permissible,” Shull said. “Down the road, we hope to do some comprehensive plan zoning amendments that make it clear the city is supportive of food access, rather than having to go back to the drawing board every time.”

Some other developments related to the CPPW program were the recent bike and pedestrian plan, which the city worked on and held community discussions about.

“Let’s Do This King County,” an ad campaign aimed at increasing health awareness throughout the county, is also part of CPPW, as are efforts by the county to increase fresh fruits and vegetables in local neighborhood markets.

kaczor berry and gonzaga are back in the sweet 16 again Jodie Kaczor Berry and her Gonzaga University women’s basketball team is headed to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. Berry, a 1997 Federal Way High School graduate, is in her ninth year as a member of the Gonzaga staff and fourth as the top assistant. Kaczor Berry served as the coordinator of women’s basketball operations for the Bulldogs for two seasons prior to being promoted to an assistant coach role in the summer of 2005. Gonzaga (285) will take on the No. 2 seed University of Kentucky Wildcats at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in Kingston, R.I. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Berry played four seasons at Western Washington University after leading Federal Way to the 1997 state championship.

Softball: TJ ready for state run again NCAA title

Raiders return all but one player, including coach; Beamer also looks like a postseason contender

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders fastpitch team is loaded once again this season and hoping for a fourth straight trip to the state tournament.

Not only do the Raiders return eight of nine starters from a squad that finished 12-4 in the rugged South Puget Sound League North Division, but TJ also brings back the most successful coach in the program’s history.

Chad Fahnlander returns after taking a year off in 2011. He resigned after the 2010 season to spend more time with his family after coaching the Raiders for seven seasons and three state tournament appearances.

During his first stint, TJ was 110-70 and advanced to the postseason every year.

“My family and I spoke on many occasions on coaching and if it wasn’t here it was going to be somewhere coaching softball or baseball,” Fahnlander said. “Fortunately, the job opened back up. I re-interviewed and accepted my old position.”

Fahnlander was welcomed back by a very veteran team, which includes allleague players Lexi Goranson, Michaela Patton, Katie Jackson and Annalise Campbell.

“We have experience and a willingness to improve and get better,” Fahnlander said. “They are very hungry to improve and to qualify for the state tournament for the fourth straight year.”

Goranson and Jackson were both first-team, All-SPSL North selections a season ago.

Goranson, a senior outfielder, finished fourth in the league with a .565 batting average. She also led TJ with 12

Jackson, a junior, finished with a 3.34 earned-run average on the mound and had 46 strikeouts in 44 innings of work. She was also one of TJ’s best hitters and had four multi-RBI games.

Campbell, a sophomore, proved to be one of the Raiders’ best hitters during her first season. The infielder hit .387 with four multi-

RBI games.

Rocky Hale pitched the shutout on the mound while striking out 13 of a possible 15 hitters.

According to Fahnlander, the only weakness of this year’s TJ team is depth.

The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center will crown numerous individual national champions, as well as award a team title this weekend. The world-class pool is in the midst of hosting the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The NCAA meet runs through Saturday night in Federal Way. The Aquatic Center welcomed a total of 270 participants (235 swimmers and 35 divers) for the season-ending championships. Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers were determined by performances achieved at the Zone Diving meets March 5-11.

The NCAA meet will kickoff at 11 a.m. on both Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, with preliminary heats. The finals will begin at 7 p.m. each day.

The University of Cal-Berkley won the 2011 NCAA title. The action on all three days of the NCAA Championships will be broadcast on ESPN3.com. The championship round will be broadcast on tape at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, on ESPNU. [ more ncaa meet page 15 ]

Georgia’s Peter Benner learned to swim at King County Aquatic Center, growing up there from age 2 to 11. His father, Rick Benner, coached the Puyallup Aquatic Club (now South Sound Titans) and had such swimmers as Megan Quann and Jamie Reid roll through his program before moving his family east.

Rick Benner was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Swimming Hall of Fame in 2010. Peter Benner, a senior, will swim the 400 individual medley at the 2012 NCAA Championships.

Arizona’s Kevin Munsch graduated

from Kennedy Catholic High School and hails from Kent. The senior will swim Saturday. Munsch was a first-team, All-American in the 200 breaststroke and had a top-eight finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis.

“I came to Arizona for the chance to be a part of something special,” Munsch said. “The environment and atmosphere that you get to be a part of every day, especially the people, the coaches and the team unity and all that take place is awesome.”

Junior Cody Roberts is the only other swimmer to graduate from a Washington high school. Roberts, a sophomore from Richland, is UNLV’s lone representative and enters the national champion-

ships as the third-ranked 100 butterflyer in the nation. Roberts, who was ready to attend the University of Washington before the school dropped its swim program, still holds the Washington high school state record in the 100 fly (47.81).

This weekend’s NCAA meet will serve as a precursor to the Aquatic Center hosting the 2012 United States Olympic Diving Trials this summer.

The Trials will be held June 18-24 and will include more than 100 of the nation’s best divers with spots on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team on the line. She also changes their bedding, provides some hands-on care, dusting, light housekeeping, and does their grocery shopping.

When asked to describe their experience with Comfort Keepers, they both agree that Jung has a strong work ethic and is very thoughtful and caring. Jeanne feels Jung has become a good friend and looks forward to the talks they have.

Wrap up: Federal Way, Lewis outshoot Beamer in soccer

The Federal Way Eagles boys soccer team has started the South Puget Sound League South Division season in impressive fashion. The Eagles moved to 2-0-0 Tuesday with a 2-1 win over cross-town rival Beamer at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Alex Lewis tallied both of the goals for the Eagles.

The first goal came in the 30th minute to tie the game at 1-1 on a pass from Luis Sanchez. Lewis scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute on a pass from Sean Rigney.

Beamer’s (1-2-0) lone goal came in the 20th minute from Ang Ta on a pass from Keaton House.

Decatur — Michael Klavuhn continued his early-season scoring spree Tuesday by scoring both of the Gators’ goals during a 2-0 non-league win over Steilacoom. Klavuhn has eight goals for unbeaten Decatur in four matches.

The Gators (4-0-0) also

have non-league wins over Stadium, Capital and Timberline. Klavuhn had four goals during a 5-1 win over Timberline on March 15.

Softball

Jefferson — In a battle between two of the favorites in the SPSL North, the Tahoma Bears outlasted the Raiders Wednesday at TJ, 6-5. Jefferson outhit the Bears, 11-9.

Michaela Patton was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Annalise Campbell was 3 for 3 for the Raiders.

Jefferson bulldozed the Decatur Gators Monday in a non-league contest, 27-0, in five innings. The Raiders pounded out 21 hits and scored at least six runs in four innings.

Rocky Hale struck out 13 and allowed only two hits to get the victory on the mound for TJ.

Track

The Todd Beamer boys rolled over Jefferson Wednesday in their SPSL opener, 95-41.

Beamer got wins from Willie Roach in the 100 meters (11.57) and high jump (6-0), Chaos James in the 200 (24.55), Austin Jex in the 800 (2:11.60) and 1,600 (4:40.81), Daniel Kubay in the 3,200 (11:11.29), Austin Hitchcock in the 110 hurdles (16.17) and 300 hurdles (40.39), Adrian Shocks in the long jump (19-11) and triple Lindsey Dahl jump (3911.5).

Jefferson picked up three wins from Jefferson Aumua in the shot put (43-11), discus (118-1) and javelin (110-0).

Kendall Green won the 400 (52.96) and Thomas Goldingay won the pole vault (10-6) for TJ. On the girls’ side, Jefferson won a tight meet over Beamer, 75.83-65.16.

Much like TJ, the Todd Beamer Titans bring back pretty much its entire roster from a season ago under first-year coach Brian Hering. The Titans finished 9-7 in the SPSL South and advanced into the West Central District Tournament.

Beamer is looking to make the next step and earn a berth into the Class 4A state tournament this season.

Leading the list of returners is senior Emma Blauser, who has already signed to play at Western Washington in the fall.

As a junior, Blauser was the second-team, All-SPSL South pitcher and was also one of the Titans’ better hitters.

On the mound, Blauser finished with a league best 16 complete games and ended up with a 9-7 record. Blauser threw 100 innings and struck out 87. At the plate, Blauser hit an impressive .400 with 15 RBIs and 22 runs. She also finished with six doubles, five stolen bases and led the SPSL South with two home runs and 15 walks.

Also back are Halle Colson, Naomi Lee and Kelsey McDonnell, who were also All-City players a season ago.

Lee, an infielder, ended the SPSL South season with a .410 batting average, scored 14 runs and knocked in 10 for the Titans.

Colson was the first-team, All-SPSL South catcher after hitting .463, led the Titans with 20 RBIs, scored 14 runs and tied for the league lead with 10 doubles on the season.

McDonnell finished fourth in the SPSL South with a .512 batting average and was named first-team, All-league selection.

She also scored 22 runs and led the league

in stolen bases with 17. McDonnell had a .632 on-base percentage.

Also back are seniors Stephanie Wong and Destiny McDonald, juniors Sami Sunitsch and sophomores Taylor Weimer-Pierce and Alyssa Woods. Newcomers Megan Lindgren, Megan JewittChan, Maddelin Colson and Analee Scott should also provide more depth for the Titans.

Both Federal Way and Decatur are hoping to build a little momentum in their programs this season. The Eagles finished with just two wins a season ago and the Gators were winless in the SPSL 3A Division.

Federal Way and head coach Rosemarie Burke bring back talented centerfielder Laura Brown, who was a secondteam, All-SPSL South Division selection after hitting .213 for the Eagles during her junior season. Also back is sophomore pitcher Jayme Scanson. Newcomers Mercede Vongasaveng (catcher) and RoseLinda Enoch (IF) should also provide some depth.

“This team will be successful if they play with no reserves and no retreat,” Burke said. “When we accomplish this, we will have a season with no regrets.”

The Gators and fourth-year head coach Molly Rutter return senior Jenny Fager (utility), along with sophomores Courtney Weick (1B/LF) and Alli Sherwin (OF).

Decatur will also be counting on plenty of newcomers this season, including sophomore Jennie Foraker and freshmen Aleah Adams, Melissa Garcia, Jules Loving and Maggie Victor.

“We are young, but a determined and hard-working group with a competitive edge,” Rutter said.

Notice of Funds Available 2013-2014 Human Services General Funds & Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds The City of Federal Way announces its 2013-2014 Request for Proposals for human services. As a member of the Human Service Funders Collaborative, Federal Way is participating in this joint application process with 17 other King County cities.

The City of Federal Way is seeking applications from non-profit and public agencies for direct human service programs and CDBG public services projects that benefit Federal Way low- and moderate-income residents. Projects and programs must serve Federal Way residents that are seniors, disabled, have special needs, or qualify as low- and moderate-income.

Who can apply?

Qualifying nonprofit organizations and public agencies serving Federal Way residents that are seniors, disabled, have special needs, or qualify as low- and moderate-income.

What funding is available in 2013/2014? $516,000 is estimated to be available for direct human services programs through Federal Way’s Human Services General Fund (the final amount is dependent on the City’s 2013-2014 budget). $86,468 is estimated to be available for direct human service programs through Federal Way’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Services program (the final amount is dependent on federal funding for the 2013 CDBG program).

Where and when are applications available?

As of Thursday, March 15, human services providers can submit one application to any of the 18 citi e s o n l i n e , i n c l u d i n g F e d e r a l W a y, a t http://share1app.culturegrants.org.
