After years of spanning the globe with its green logo emblazoned on nearly every coffee cup the eye could see, Starbucks is taking a shot with some healthier fare.

The coffee giant opened the nation’s first Evolution Fresh store Monday in Bellevue Square. The enterprise, a juice and health food retailer, more closely resembles Jamba Juice than its YOURstore.

Residents from around the Puget Sound area packed the new location, right next to the Starbucks in the Lodge, itching to check out the new drinks and food.

“This is the gathering place of this region,” said Arthur Rubinfeld, president of global development for Starbucks.

The store features juice taps, where customers can build custom-ordered 16-ounce drinks for $7.99, or eightounce offerings for $4.99. The menu is visible throughout the store, with a four-screen video wall that can display the drink choices with the simple press of a button at the main counter.

In addition, Evolution Fresh also sells salads and sandwiches. An average meal with drinks and food comes

Though extensive construction is set to begin this year on Interstate 405 through Bellevue, questions remain about how the project will be paid for, and who will be able to travel in which lanes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation updated the Bellevue City Council on Monday on progress to build new lanes that could be tolled with rates varying by levels of congestion.

According to the state’s schedule, construction from Northeast Sixth Street to Lynnwood is scheduled to begin this year. The project would add one lane both north and south from Bellevue to Bothell. This lane would be an express toll lane, as would the existing carpool lane. The carpool lane from Bothell to Interstate 5 would be converted as well.

Use of these lanes would be priced at varying levels throughout the day based on congestion, similar to the system in place on State Route 167.

Revenue from tolls is expected to pay for a portion of these new lanes, but WSDOT officials indicated this may not be enough, and additional tax raises could be needed.

“I’m very confident tolling will not pay for all the improvements we want to see on I-405, said Kim Henry, director of the I-405/SR-167 programs for WSDOT. “I think there’s going to have to be some new revenue gas tax or something Artist’s drawing shows how HOT lane signs could look on I-405. Foundation raises $100,000 for police The Bellevue Police Foundation raised more than $100,000 to support the purchase of technology tools and equipment for the Bellevue Police Department at its third-annual fundraising breakfast March 16.

That figure tops the $64,000 total raised at last year’s event.

Since it was founded in 2009, the Bellevue Police Foundation has contributed more than $147,500 in equipment and training to the police department.

This year’s theme, “Using Tomorrow’s Technology for Law Enforcement Today,” emphasized the importance of recent purchases by the foundation during 2011, such as the purchase of iPads, SWAT night-vision goggles, T-3 electric vehicle, computer forensics software and a new police K-9 named Diego.

Chichi Bellevue? I’m all for it

I

t’s official. Bellevue is chichi.

No less an authority that USA Today used that label Monday for the city in a story describing that the opening of Starbucks’ first Evolution Fresh store in the nation will be here, not in Seattle.

The store will sell premium juices and vegan and veggie dishes and will be separate from the ubiquitous coffee shops that dot almost every corner in America. The Reporter has a story about the undertaking in today’s paper.

But, back to Chichi, which means “showily or affectedly elegant or trendy; pretentious.”

Wow. Little did I realize that our combination of great schools, numerous parks, clean streets and incredible diversity was so … pretentious.

Being tweaked is nothing new for Bellevue. We often get smug put-downs from people in Seattle for apparently not having panhandlers lining our downtown sidewalks and homeless people urinatCraig Groshart ing in alleys. Of course, that could just be because Bellevue doesn’t have alleys.

I have nothing against Seattle. I grew up there and it was a fine city. I remember walking around the downtown, Belltown (it wasn’t called that then) and the U District any time day or night without being concerned. I’m not so sure that’s the case today.

I also remember a city that built the World’s Fair in the middle of town without endless meetings to debate, well – everything about it. The Space Needle went up, the U.S. Pavilion (now the science center) was inspiring architecturally and Seattle got a gorgeous fountain in the middle of it all.

I’m pretty sure that could never happen again. Maybe not even in Bellevue.

But it does seem overly smug to hear the Seattle putdowns about Bellevue when people here get good schools, city services and amenities that are not just for the rich, but for everyone.

Bellevue, in fact, is more diverse than Seattle. There are 80 or so languages spoken in our schools other than English. About 30 percent of the population is foreign-born. In fact, members of the large population from India who live here is asking the U.S. government to put that country’s next embassy in Bellevue, not Seattle.

And, despite what some think, not everyone lives in a mansion on the lake.

Schools in east Bellevue have a large percent of students who get free or reduced lunch. There are homes in Bellevue that are modest by any standard. And public housing does exist.

Nevertheless, voters here consistently approve school levy and bond issues. They know that all the schools in the district will get improved or rebuilt when their turn comes. Residents also appreciate that Bellevue allocates neighborhood improvement funds to every part of the city equally and on a rotating basis, letting residents decide what would be best for their neighborhoods. And not only are the parks here maintained to a high standard, but also plantings along streets and in medians, which are considered the equivalent of mini-parks.

So, if this makes us “affectedly elegant,” I’m all for it. I have nothing against Seattle. I just won’t pay $3.50 to go see it by driving across the 520 bridge.

City should wait on detour My family leaves near Interlake High School off of Northeast 24th Street. I work in the Eastgate area.

The most direct route to work is south on 164th to the Phantom Lake area and then around to Eastgate.

Since the washout on West Lake Sammamish Parkway, plus people avoiding the 520 bridge, 164th has become bumper to bumper traffic most hours of the day. As a result of these changes, traveling north and south in Bellevue has become a challenge.

You can imagine my shock to see electronic signs announcing that 164th between Northeast Eighth Street and the Phantom Lake area is now going to be closed through the end of June. The sign suggests drivers use 156th or 148, both of which are already packed.

Closing 164th at this time is insane. Now a detour of the detour will definitely cause both 156th and 148th to become parking lots. What is the city thinking?

Just when the cost of gas has gone out of sight, the city creates a situation where cars will experience heavier traffic and use more gas. The city should wait until West Lake Sammamish is repaired to share some of the load.

Wine shop closing sad We were saddened to hear our favorite Bellevue wine store is about to go out of business. George’s Wine Shop will be closing down at the end of the month.

We have enjoyed the wines George has brought us from Australia to Zillah and all points in between.

George has been a great supporter of the community at large including hosting several fund raisers for the Sammamish High School PTSA. We wish you all the best to George, his family and staff.

I attended the recent production of “The Foreigner” and was thoroughly entertained. The Georgia Hunting Lodge set was worthy of any professional organization in the Seattle area. Where’s the reduction?

I recently read where the increase in natural gas supply from new drilling techniques have dropped prices by nearly 80 percent over the past few years to new ten-year lows. That’s funny because I haven’t noticed any reduction in my heating bills.

The only adjustment I can recall is PSE asking me to pay a surcharge to cover their extra cost from renewable energy sources. Maybe I missed the adjustment and my natural gas usage has skyrocketed.

I doubt it!

Bellevue woman hit by bus, dies

A 47-year-old Bellevue woman was killed March 15 after exiting a King County Metro bus.

Police say it is not clear what led to the incident, but at approximately 6:30 p.m. Nancy Biladeau was caught in the wheel well of the bus near Northeast 10th and Northup Way.

When the bus drove away, the driver heard a noise, police said.

The driver immediately stopped the bus and found the woman lying in the roadway.

Police and medics arrived on scene and attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead.

Biladeau was a frequent rider of the route and was familiar to the other three passengers on the bus.

According to a KING TV report,

Biladeau took great pride in her ability to get around but, the report added, had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. For 22 years she worked at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue, and got around town on the bus for frequent trips to the library and the mall.

King County Metro spokeswoman Linda Thielke said the driver was taken to Overlake Medical Center for shock.

Bellevue Rotary awards grants Bellevue Rotary presented a $2,000 grant to Susan Camerer, executive director and co-founder of Vision House on March 13.

Vision House (nohomelesskids.org), a Christian social service agency based outside of Seattle, has provided transitional housing, support services and child care for homeless mothers and their children and separately to homeless men recovering from drug and alcohol addition since 1990.

Bellevue Rotary also presented a grant of $2,000 to Liz Stiger, area director of Young Life Eastside Capernaum (young-

life.org). Young Life works with children to help them feel safe and have the confidence to stand by their convictions.

A $1,500 grant was presented to Karen Nestvold, development and outreach manager for Music Works Northwest (musicworksnw.org). Music Works Northwest is a non-profit community music school offering music lessons and performance experiences for all ages.

The Bellevue Rotary Club is an organization of approximately 200 business and professional leaders. It is the largest Rotary club on the Eastside.

The 60-year-old driver is a 27year veteran of the organization, with only four minor accidents on his record (i.e. damaged mirrors from getting to close to signs or other things).

Thielke said accidents have been at historic lows over the last two years. In 2010, with more than 48 million miles traveled, King County Metro recorded 420 preventable accidents, with 460 in 2011.

Divorced finalized for Sky’s parents Solomon Metalwala and Julia Biryukova, the parents of missing 2-year-old Sky signed a divorce agreement on Monday.

Metawala was given custody of the boy’s 5-year-old sister, and Biryukova was allowed no visitation rights.

The agreement stipulates that Metawala will pay the couple’s credit card debt of $47,000, but there will be no child support payments from either side.

Drivers will have to pay an additional 2.5 percent in tolling starting in July, as part of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s plan to have annual raises over the next few years. For peak time drivers this means an increase of 9 cents, up to $3.59 for those with a Good to Go pass.

Rates will continue to increase each year by 2.5 percent through 2015. In 2016, a 15 percent increase in prices will occur.

The rate increase is needed to ensure revenue will meet costs and make debt payments to the bondholders, as required by bond contracts and the project financial plan.

Bellevue Kiwanis set food drive The Bellevue Kiwanis will hold a food drive April 21-28.

The club will drop off food bags on April 21 and pick them up April 28.

The club notes that there has been a 50 percent increase in food bag assistance requests since 2008, but funding for such programs has disappeared. Many food bag clients find that food bank and food stamp assistance does not cover their monthly needs.

Keep your tools out of harm’s way Invention gives gardeners place to keep all supplies As a contractor and gardener of more than three decades, Jim Fabregas has lost a few tools in his day. Whether it’s dropping a lopper in the garbage, or leaving a tool in the bush, keeping track of supplies can be a real hassle. So about six years ago, Fabregas began fashioning an attachable tool case out of wood and plastic, drilling holes for various pieces of equipment, including cup holders for beer and a cell phone.

It began as just a personal organizer, but soon neighbors saw it and wanted their own.

“It was something no one had yet,” said Fabregas. “I like to go out there and play on Saturdays and I was always losing things.”

It wasn’t long before retailers were showing interest in the product. So Fabregas, who had never invented anything before, sought a couple patents, and enlisted local companies to produce it. Approximately one year later, the white, half wood, half plastic carrier had been turned all plastic, with six different colors and a couple attachments, and the Garden and Tool Caddy was born.

“We’ve always had a great response; it’s just that we’d never had

the time to put enough effort into it,” said Chris Fabregas, Jim’s son.

The family traveled around to trade shows, and sold the product online for approximately $20-$25 a piece for several years, before getting a big break. The caddy was picked up by ABC World News over the holiday season as a Made in America gift. More than 5,000 new orders came in, almost overnight, representing more units than the family sold since the product was invented.

Forum to focus on real estate Analysts are starting to believe that some parts of the economy - notably real estate, are on the mend.

A panel of local experts will discuss whether or not this trend is catching on locally at the Bellevue Downtown Association’s monthly forum, March 28.

“Our Real Estate Economy,” will explore the latest facts and figures in the area, leading to a “state of the market” type discussion.

Panelists are Suzanne Baugh, director

at Commercial Real Estate Solutions and Cushman and Wakefield; Richard Leider, principal at Trinity Real Estate; and Monica Wallace, senior vice president of Wallace Properties. Jan Morris, of Bank of America, will moderate the discussion.

The event begins at noon at the Bellevue Club, 11200 SE Sixth St. The cost is $40 for a BDA member, and $50 for non members. Registration deadline is March 23.

Much of the production remains at home. The family uses packaging and plastic companies to make the caddies, though many of the finished products live in the family garage. Thousands of units sit in boxes ready to be shipped.

While the caddy has been a big success for the Fabregas family, it carried tremendous risk. Jim said he has sunk more than $95,000 into the project, with the production he described as “the size of a small engine,” costing a hefty $55,000.

“It’s a huge investment and risk,” Chris Fabregas said. “But we really believed in it, and so many people said it was such a good idea. We made so many for friends and neighbors that we figured everyone else would want one.”

Part of the appeal comes from the universal utility. It has rounded and straight edges so it can attach to wheel barrows or yard waste bins. An attachment for a strap allows the product to be slung over the shoulder while on the move. Brackets are included as well, so the caddy can be screwed into the wall.

the history of our family: Driving from our hometown of Bend, Ore., – to the big town of Seattle – for the planet’s grandest event of all time: The Century 21 Exposition.

Our parents said the World’s Fair was a celebration of the Space Age – a majestic showcase of science, culture and mankind’s destiny. My brothers and I had no interest in any of that. There were rides!

The distance from Bend to Seattle is around 330 miles. At our dad’s average driving speed of 180 miles an hour, we figured to be there in well under two hours. But after factoring in stops for bathroom breaks, food, more bathroom breaks – and my regular disgorgements – the trip took two days.

As we approached the outskirts of Seattle, we could see the spectacular Space Needle

y parents didn’t take us anywhere.

Why would they? We were five brothers (no sisters) who argued, wrestled, cried, pinched and screamed – on any car trip longer than Safeway.

We owned a cramped Ford Falcon sedan – which was a slightly roomier version of a Ford Sardine Sedan.

As for me, I might have been the least welcome Pat Cashman passenger of the group: the one who reliably got carsick before we were out of the driveway.

And yet, in the summer of 1962, we embarked on the most ambitious car trip in

Our family loved the Food Circus – with its variety of cuisines from afar. The Italian food was a particular revelation to our family.

Previously, we thought Chef Boyardee was penultimate.

I remember the Bubbleator, where the famous greeting was always, “Step to the rear of the sphere” – except for the fill-in operator who was on shift the day we were there. He rearranged it to: “Step quickly into the sphere, before the door shuts on your rear.”

As our weeklong visit ended, we piled once again into our tiny sedan and headed for home. I recall looking out the rear window as the Space Needle began to disappear (on the far horizon).

At that moment, I believed I could see my own future – and whispered to myself: “Someday I am going to return and live here.”

But the vision was ambiguous, so I was unclear whether it foresaw Seattle – or Fife.

The wonder of a World’s Fair

looming on the far horizon. “Look,” said Dad. “There’s the spectacular Space Needle looming on the far horizon.” That confirmed it.

We stayed at a motel that was easy walking distance to the Fair – and the spectacular Space Needle, by now looming on the near horizon.

I can still remember standing at the foot of it, looking straight up at its awe-inspiringly majestic height – and wondering if I’d get sick on the elevator ride up. Hedging their bets, our parents kept me away from the Belgian waffles.

Some of the exhibits at the fair attempted to show what sorts of gadgets would be commonplace nowadays. Futurists said we’d all be driving around in our gyrocopters. The closest we came may have been the Yugo.

It was believed future cities would be encased in giant domes. Good thing that didn’t happen to Seattle – or it would have been blown up after just 20 years and replaced with a new, outdoor city.

Scientists were supposed to develop future foods rich in protein. Sure enough, the new 2012 Slim Jim Beef Jerky has a whopping 9.4 grams of the stuff.

Timing makes superintendent search difficult Many candidates reluctant to leave posts

The search for Bellevue’s next superintendent has been tough so far.

In addition to the narrow time-frame to find someone by the end of this year, Albert Cohen of the search firm McPherson & Jacobson said it’s been difficult in his first week or so on the job.

The Bellevue School Board voted to hire McPherson & Jacobson last week after the only other search firm it had been considering dropped out of the race.

Cohen said many qualified applicants he’s reached out to across the country are in their second or third years in their current positions, thus don’t want to leave yet.

However, he is staying abreast of the hiring processes in the Seattle and Spokane districts.

In addition to making phone calls and sending emails to potential candidates, Cohen said he and his partner, Mike Boring, have also finished a brochure.

Cohen emphasized that he and Boring are in phase one and two of their plan to find a superintendent. These include establishing characteristics of the new superintendent and a timeline for superintendent search and also determining advertising venues. The second phase is holding stakeholder input meetings, developing and distributing application and advertising materials and recruiting/tracking applicants.

Bellevue teen to represent boys/girls club Domonique Gillette, a six-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue, represented the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue as the organization’s 2012 Youth of the Year in a statewide competition this week.

Domonique joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue in 5th grade after moving from California. He first attended Project Learn,

He will graduate from Interlake High School this spring and then plans to join the Marine Corps and to further his education at San Diego State University.

Hunts Point Snowscape, circa 1910 This Hunts Point home belonged to the Meydenbauer family. Patriarch William Meydenbauer first came to the Eastside in 1869 and staked a claim on the bay that now bears his name. By 1883 he had sold all of his Bellevue property.

He tried to buy it back a few years later, but decided that the asking price of $75/ acre was too expensive. In 1906 he bought a piece of land on Hunts Point and built this vacation home.

The Meydenbauers were not the only ones with hideaways on Hunts Point in the early 20th century.

Why is this important?

Because this beautiful lake is a reservoir that will eventually provide all of us with drinking water.

Without this, we cannot grow or prosper as a region.

But our mission at Cascade is to think about tomorrow as well. as our region grows, so will demand.

Bellevue Police arrested 16 in connection with numerous burglaries The Bellevue Police investigation led Bellevue’s Special Enforcement Team to Federal Way, where assisted by deputies from King County Sheriff ’s Office, they arrested three burglary suspects during a high-risk traffic stop. A subsequent search in Seattle yielded stolen property including a firearm. This particular group has been under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the Puget Sound area and will potentially close numerous residential burglaries.

Bellevue police have arrested 16 people this year in connection with a number of residential and commercial burglaries.

Twelve of those arrested are suspects in the residential burglaries and four are suspects in the commercial burglaries. Police also have identified multiple associates who still are under investigation.

There have been 127 residential burglaries and 16 commercial burglaries reported in Bellevue since the beginning of 2012, compared with 158 burglaries reported during the same time frame as last year.

Bellevue patrol officers and investigators have worked jointly with other agencies to stop the rash of burglaries that are occurring all around the region.

Newport to honor Albo, rename field

The Newport baseball program will honor a major piece of its past this weekend when the baseball field is renamed for longtime coach Bob Albo.

The renaming marks the first official dedication in an individual’s honor at a Bellevue School District sports facility.

“The guys behind it did a great job,” Newport athletic director Gil James said, adding that a group of around five former players spearheaded the effort and pulled others on board. A large contingent of former players is expected Bob Albo for the Knights’ game against Bellevue and other activities throughout the day in Albo’s honor, including unveiling a new scoreboard bearing his name.

“It’s cool that those guys who played for him were so passionate about getting this done,” James said. “They were a great group to work with and I could see through this how much coach Albo meant to them.”

Albo was a teacher for more than 30 years, including 26 in Bellevue, according to the Bellevue School District website. He coached at Newport from 1972-83 and again from 1992-96, leading the program to a 322-108 record, six conference titles and three state titles. He put more than a dozen players into the MLB Draft.

The dedication will begin at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday 24 at Newport High School and is open to the public.

It was a long journey from The Gambia in West Africa, to the USL’s Los Angeles Blues, but for former Bellevue College soccer player Ebrima “EJ” Jatta, the journey has been well worth it.

Jatta was the first player from his village to be named to the country’s men’s national soccer team and would later come to the United States to continue his career and education.

At Bellevue College, he scored four goals in seven games, including a twogoal, one assist effort against Trinity Lutheran.

Jatta recently signed with the Los Angeles Blues of the USL and took some time with The Reporter to talk about his youth in The Gambia and his continued humanitarian efforts there, his time in Bellevue and what the future holds in professional American soccer.

BELLEVUE REPORTER: What do you miss most about The Gambia?

EJ: My family. I have seven sisters and one brother. I was last there in December for three weeks.

REPORTER: After being the first person from your village to make the country’s national soccer team, are you somewhat of a celebrity when you return?

EJ: A little bit, it really was a big deal in the village. We have a couple players that have come up since then and made the team and I’m kind of a mentor to them.

REPORTER: Why is going back to The Gambia and taking part in humanitarian efforts important to you?

EJ: It is something I’ve been doing since I made the national team. I met a couple from the UK that had been coming to the country for a lot of years and we started talking, and they found out I was a soccer player and asked me how I started playing. I told

COURTESY PHOTO them there was a soccer academy and they said they wanted to help. From there, they’ve been helping out with balls and cleats and stuff like that.

REPORTER: How much of an impact do those kinds of projects have?

EJ: When I was growing up no one believed anyone would play soccer.

I didn’t know how, but I knew I was going to do it. So now I give back through the school. They see if I made it, they can make it. Most of the kids who have made it, I have worked with.

We have a lot more players from my village making money playing soccer now.

EJ: I was going to play for the Kitsap Pumas, but I came late. A friend asked me if I was going to college and said his son went to Bellevue College and said they had a great soccer program. I decided to go back and get my education. I’m still there taking classes for sports management.

REPORTER: Having seen how soccer is received on a local, national and international level, how would you characterize the enthusiasm for soccer here in Seattle and the United States?

EJ: I’ve been all around the world for soccer. The passion for soccer is really big in the US. Not everyone

Top prep squads headed to Eastside

Sixteen of the top prep boys lacrosse teams from the West Coast and as far away as New York will come to Mercer Island this weekend for the Northwest Invitational and the Bellevue Wolverines will be on hand see where they stack up against a field full of playoff participants and three state champs from 2011.

After beginning with only five teams in 2006, the tournament is now the largest of its kind on the West Coast, drawing previous participants from Colorado, Tennessee, Utah and Nevada.

“The East Coast, specifically the Northeast, is a traditional hotbed of lacrosse,” Mercer Island coach Ian O’Hearn said. “It will be a great experience for teams here.”

The City of Bellevue’s Youth Sports & Fitness Counselor in Training program needs volunteers for its summer sports camp programs for children ages 4-6 and 7-12.

Activities are based on a weekly theme revolving around sports and volunteers will work with coaches to assist with camps.

Village Theatre delivers plenty of laughs, surprises Gabrielle Nomura

Little did I know when I went to Village Theatre last week that I was in for many surprises involving its newest musical, “It Shoulda Been You.” This show premiered last year at New Jersey’s George Street Playhouse, and has been revised for its second run in Issaquah.

First, there was the celebrity sighting in the lobby.

“Is that the guy who plays Niles on ‘Frasier?’” I immediately had to ask my friend, Beth, my date for the night.

While David Hyde Pierce actually directed “It Shoulda Been You” when

it opened, I’m assuming the “Frasier” alumnus was there to support his hubby, Brian Hargrove, the writer and lyricist with a wicked sense of humor behind the show, described as “Mazel tov with a twist.”

After sitting down, I waited in the darkness for a pleasant evening of entertainment.

But what happened after the lights went up was epic.

The bride, portrayed by actor Mara Solar, is Jewish, the groom, played by Tim Wilson, is Catholic, and the plot, which takes place over their wedding day, is a farce of manners, mishaps and juicy secrets revealed.

Neither of the families want the wedding to happen for various reasons, and when the ex-boyfriend

to power-house vocalist Kat Ramsburg, who played the bride’s always-a-bridesmaid sister.

With wicked humor and quirky characters, “It Shoulda Been You” was like watching one of today’s top sitcoms, but live and set to song. There were no jazz-hands or old-fashioned pageantry here, but edgy jokes, a frankness about sex and sexuality, and Lady-Gaga-like themes of “Embrace the way you are.”

With that said, I’d like to say I finally saw a musical that spoke to my millennial generation. But, from the raucous laughter that shook the room, including the hearty guffaws of a balding gentleman who sat next to me, I’d say “It Shoulda Been You” brought down the house in everyone’s eyes that night.

Leif was born on April 23, 1919 in Seattle. His parents were immigrants from Norway who came directly to the Seattle/Everett area. He is predeceased by his two sisters, Margaret Hale and Barbara Rice and his son-in-law Ted Boskovich.

Leif served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for 12 months in 1938 as a landscaper, serving in North Bend and Port Angeles.

After completing an apprenticeship as a shipfitter in the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, he was obligated to continue duty there at the outbreak of World War II. Later he served in the U. S. Navy, stationed in the South Pacific. He attended West Seattle High School and University of Washington.

After the end of the war, Leif hitchhiked to New York, and then visited his relatives in Norway with whom he kept a strong connection for the rest of his life. He met his future wife Gerd at this time.

The major part of Leif ’s career was spent at the Seattle Water Department. Leif had a lifelong keen interest in art. He took wonderful photos, especially with his Graflex cameras.

He was a member of Eastgate Community Club. As a member of Federated Eastside Club he was an original member of the Bellevue Community College Advisory Council, junior college committee chairman and chairman of the legislative committee. He was the founder and first president of Newport Way Library Association.

Travel was a major focus for Leif. He especially liked long, lone car trips. He drove North to Inuvik, Canada, East to St. Johns, Newfoundland, and South as far as Nicaragua. He traveled as far South in Africa as one can go. China was a favored destination.

Leif is survived by four children and three grandchildren: Ann Elizabeth Bjorseth of Toronto, Canada and her daughter Daniela; Rondi Boskovich of Tacoma; Roald Bjorseth (Laura Larkin) and sons Daniel and William of Seattle; and Dr.Franklin Bjorseth of Anacortes, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Judith “Judy” Antoinette (Miller) Stallings, 69, of Clarkdale, AZ, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2012.

Her wonderful wit, easy smile, and loyalty to her friendships will leave a legacy of joy that will sustain those who knew her forever. She was born on December 21, 1942 in Seattle, WA, the daughter of the late Thomas Miller & Alice Miller Calhoon (93) of Kent, WA. Judy graduated from Renton High School in 1961, and received post graduate degrees in Political Science and Foreign Languages from the University of Washington. She married Thomas Stallings in 1982, and they enjoyed life together in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Cornville, AZ until Tom’s death in 2008. Judy and her beloved Australian Terriers, “Lida Rose” and “Dusty”, moved to Clarkdale, AZ in 2011.

Judy was a devoted elementary school teacher in Cottonwood, AZ until her retirement in 2011. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. As an avid reader, she volunteered in the Cottonwood Public Library each week.

Prior to her teaching career, Judy worked in the travel industry and participated in tours to Europe, England, South America, and Mexico.

Judy’s love of the Southwest desert and its natural beauty permeated her life as well as her artistic work. Blessed with creative and artistic abilities, Judy was always busy with her quilting, knitting, beading, or stained glass hobbies. Her devotion to training and showing her beloved Australian Terriers over the past two decades was her greatest joy, as evidenced by their many trophies. Judy was the co-founder of The Australian Terrier Foundation that is now in 30 countries.

Judy is survived by her mother, Alice Calhoon (93) of Kent, WA; a son-in-law Thomas Stallings & his wife, Diana (Grabiec), of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter-in-law Diane (Stallings) Bauer of Phoenix, AZ; a sister Merrely (Miller) Bantell & her husband Marvin of Renton, WA; and a brother Thomas G. Miller of Olympia,WA. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren and four nieces and nephews.

This giant of a man left this world with the knowledge that he had fought the good fight to the very end and that during his life he had achieved remarkable success as a much loved husband, a greatly respected father, a truly committed community leader, a very effective government executive, and a true friend to many.

Showing an indomitable steel will, Donald fought a brave courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma for the last six years. Also having Amyloidosis, Donald had to endure chemo continuously for those years; he was currently in his 68th round of nonstop chemo. Worse than the chemo was the MWF dialysis he also faced during that entire time. He met each medical emergency, surgery and broken bone with incredible courage, determination & grace. He outlived everyone’s expectations; his doctors, neighbors and friends referred to him as “the Miracle Man.” Donald was in the Senior Executive Service for the last 14 years of his 36 year career with the Federal Government.

He was the Regional Commissioner for the Kansas City, San Francisco and Seattle Regions which entailed being responsible for all Social Security offices in the 12 western states within those regions. His position was the military equivalent of a 4 star General. Donald was Management’s Deputy Chief Negotiator for the first Social Security National labor contract with AFGE. He received innumerable Awards and Citations

for his Outstanding Performance and Leadership during his career. Donald had a B.S. and a M.S. degree and was a trained mediator.

Donald was elected Chair of the Federal Executive Board in the San Francisco Bay Area and again in the Seattle Region. In that capacity, he was also in charge of the Combined Federal Campaign (United Way) for all Federal Agencies in Kansas City, San Francisco and Seattle.

Donald was very proud to be a Rotarian and served on the Board of Directors for the 200 member Bellevue Rotary prior to becoming ill. He also served on the Board for the Summit Homeowners Association and was Chair of their Architectural Control Committee for many years.

Donald was born in Illinois and taught history in High School before beginning his federal career. He married Suzy Schmidt in Kansas City in 1985 and moved shortly thereafter to San Francisco. He has been residing in Bellevue WA since 1991. In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his son John Mings (Anne Marie) of Orlando, FL, daughter Patti Reno (Tim) of Overland Park, KS, daughter Stacey H. (Jeff) of Spring Hill, FL, and 4 grandchildren: Nicole Dykman (Ben), Andrew Reno, Ellianna H. and Baylee H. He also leaves behind a very distraught 2½ lb Yorkie,Tush, who spent the last six years on Donald’s lap.

A party to celebrate Donald’s life will be held at the Summit Clubhouse on April 15th. Donald N. Mings July 29, 1935 – March 3, 2012

Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He formerly served as a spokesperson for UNICEF in Nigeria, Angola and the Darfur region of Sudan. He was also a member Ronan Farrow of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee’s legal counsel team, working on international human rights law issues.

Farrow, son of actress Mia Farrow and film director Woody Allen, was a child prodigy who earned his undergraduate degree from Bard College at 15 (enrolled at 11), enrolled in Yale Law School at 17, and graduated in 2009. He was recently named a Rhodes Scholar and is planning to study international development issues at Oxford.

The luncheon is the foundation’s biggest fundraising event of the year and raised more than $310,000 last year for scholarships and educational programs at the college.

Doris Matilda Adcock

Doris Matilda Adcock, 95, of Mercer Island, WA passed away on March 16, 2012. She was born in Boston to Charles and Tekla Rhoden on December 5, 1916, and raised in Timber Lake, SD with eight brothers and sisters where she became school teacher in a oneroom schoolhouse.

During WWII she moved to Seattle to help in the war effort and then served in the South Pacific as a member of The Women’s Air Corp developing surveillance videos. Her brothers and sisters joined her, sharing a house in the U District, and also served during the war.

She met her husband,Will, hiking, climbing, skiing and folk dancing as members of The Mountaineers. With her husband she hand built a home and raised their family on Mercer Island while teaching at Eastgate Elementary.

Doris is predeceased by her husband Will who passed away in 2000.

She is survived by two sons,William (Cheryl) Adcock and James (Anne Otten) Adcock and three grandchildren, Charles Adcock, Stephanie Adcock, and Christiane Adcock.
