Once again we went about asking the residents of Federal Way who was the best at what they do. This year there were the usual categories of service, shopping, food, living and night life and a total of 74 awards. In the following pages is the entire list of your winners, handpicked by you. This year saw the addition of several new awards in healthcare professionals, tutor, auto parts, buffet, ice cream, Indian and the reintroduction of deli / sandwich after a three year absence. Dry cleaner, furniture store and kid’s clothing were deleted due to limited voting responses in the past. There were three first-place ties, two second-place ties, and two third-place ties
one of which was a five-way tie for third. We received a staggering number of these submissions in both print and online. Some of you, as always, get very creative in your picks and in your answers. For instance, some, when asked the country you were from, chimed in with King and Pierce rather than the US. Apparently these folks want to secede from the union. Perhaps they should move to Boulder, CO; one entry listed FW Automotive as the best adult care center. Apparently their car is really old; an entry for best auto dealership listed the pygmy goats as a selling point. Perhaps they will buy a truck from the same dealer to haul these with. One can only hope they weren’t referring to any of the employees; a number of folks were clearly inebriated when they filled out their picks as they listed the WA State
Liquor Control Board as their favorite wine store. Sadly this occurred in a number of entries. This was not to be outdone by the folks that simply listed Federal Way as their favorite wine store. I suppose when you’re in the need for a good bottle of wine, anywhere counts. Humor aside, none of this would be possible without the support of you, the reader. Your commitment to filling out the ballots and submitting them is what makes this program a success. The businesses that place as finalists and win these awards take this very seriously. They want to be the best and go to great strides to insure that they are. We hope you enjoy the results along with the messages from the businesses and groups for which you voted. Thanks for making Federal Way a great city.

The dedication and relentless energy the cast is painting for this concert is intuitive and brilliant. Both Katherine and Laurie have voices as smooth as silk. These people are consummate professionals who will have the audience leaving with their satisfying tale of Rosemary Clooney's life. "Tenderly" is a pop standard published in 1946. It is known for purity in vocal rendition, sincerity in emotional expression, and excellence in performance and audience connection. Rosemary Clooney came into prominence in the early 1950s with the novelty hit "Come On-a My House," which was co-written by David Seville (the father figure of Alvin and the Chipmunks), and produced by Mitch Miller. She had success as a jazz vocalist and had her own 1956 syndicated television musical-variety show. Her career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction. Clooney revealed in her two autobiographies that she suffered for much of her life from bipolar disorder. Her career was revived in 1974 when Bing Crosby, her "White Christmas" co-star, asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. In 1995, she guest-starred in the NBC television medical drama "ER" (starring with her nephew George Clooney), and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. She continued to record until her death of lung cancer in 2002. Centerstage's production of "Tenderly" will match the March evening displays of Mercury and Venus. This show will provide real, honest and infectious music that promises to be a gold standard event that could be made-for-TV original.

East India Grill reveals chicken tikka masala recipe
East India Grill has established a reputation as one of the best ethnic restaurants in Federal Way and the region. By ANDY HOBBS editor@federalwaymirror.com
Owner and food guru Kabal Gill, with three-plus decades of restaurant experience, has a genuine passion for cooking and is all about sharing the love. Diners at East India Grill can watch the kitchen
action via a TV monitor. He also enjoys showing people how to cook Indian food at home. Each week, Gill shares his mouthwatering recipes in a cooking class where the seats fill up fast. On March 10, he whipped up a batch of chicken tikka masala from scratch. This is one of the most popular dishes in Indian cuisine. As the number-one restaurant meal in the United Kingdom, chicken tikka masala has even been called “a true British national dish.” Throughout this recent cooking class, attendees sniffed concoctions
like curry mixed with cinnamon and a garlic-ginger mashup. His house-blended spices tickle noses and clear sinuses with their intoxicating aroma. Guests also sampled Gill’s custom-crafted chai tea while watching the action. Less than an hour later, dishes of steaming chicken tikka masala were served alongside either rice or warm garlic naan, a type of soft bread cooked in a clay oven. The naan was perfect for sopping up the savory sauce. The tender chunks of chicken bursted with well-balanced flavors. Chicken tikka masala is the
perfect introduction for newcomers to Indian food (see recipe below). It is offered on East India Grill’s daily lunch buffet, which stands apart from typical buffets because of its high-quality madefrom-scratch approach. The lamb curry is fall-off-the-bone tender, while mushroom and lentil dishes will satisfy the vegetarian palate. Other tasty items include little fritters called vegetable pakoras, as well as tandoori chicken, which pops in the palate with bold roasted flavors.
RECIPE: Chicken tikka masala
The following recipe is courtesy of Kabal Gill, owner of East India Grill in Federal Way. The recipe consists of three steps. Gill recommends keeping water handy to cool the sauce in case it burns. Step 1: Marination ingredients • 2 pounds of chicken breast • 1/2 cup of yogurt • 2 tablespoons of garlic and ginger (mashed together) • 1 tablespoon of salt • 1 tablespoon of curry powder • 1 tablespoon of black pepper • 1 tablespoon of methi
Chicken tikka masala, whipped up from scratch, is one of the most popular dishes in Indian cuisine and one of the many mouth-watering entrees you will find at East India Grill.
Directions: Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and marinate for four hours. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Sauce ingredients • 3 pounds of fresh tomatoes, diced • 1/2 cup of chopped onion • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil • 1/2 cup of tomato paste (optional) • 2 tablespoons of curry powder • 2 tablespoons of garlic and ginger (mashed together) • 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder • 2 and 1/2 tablespoons of salt • 2 cups of cream • 1 and 1/2 cups of water • 2 tablespoons of cumin seed
Cooking classes • East India Grill is located at 31845 Gateway Center Blvd S. in Federal Way (near I-5 and South 320th Street). Cooking classes run 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Saturdays through April. Cost is $20, and registration is recommended. Call (253) 529-9292 or visit www.eastindiagrillwa.com. The next cooking class on March 17 will explore bread and seafood. • East India Grill is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Aside from a daily lunch buffet, the restaurant has a full menu with appetizers, entrees and desserts.
Directions: Warm up a large saucepan, add vegetable oil and let it get hot. Add cumin seed for a minute, then add onion and cook until brown. Add garlic/ginger, cook 2 minutes. Add curry powder, turmeric and salt. Turn the heat to low for a couple of minutes. Add tomatoes and cook about 10 minutes until you lose water from the tomatoes. Now add tomato paste. Let it mix well with the sauce for 2 minutes. Put all gravy in a blender, then return to same pan and add water. Step 3: Putting it all together Add chicken and cream to the sauce in the pan. When the mixture thickens, add meth (fenugreek) for about 4 minutes. Check the salt for taste. Serve with basmati rice or garlic naan (bread).
