The Enumclaw School District, Enumclaw Foundation, Franciscan Foundation and Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation joined to bring a Rachel’s Challenge event to the Pete’s Pool football field Tuesday, March 6.

The challenge was to create a paper chain of links with acts of kindness and compassion written on each link.

The chain was presented on the field showcasing acts of kindness from the communities of Enumclaw and Black Diamond.

The White River School District also sent some bags of links.

Enumclaw School District Superintendent Mike Nelson said the chain reached more than two miles long. Each link had an act of kindness written on it.

Also speaking at the event were Enumclaw Mayor Liz Reynolds and Black Diamond Mayor Becky Olness.

Dave Gamache was the featured speaker and Black Diamond Elementary student Grace Doleshel gave closing remarks.

The Rachel’s Challenge event is based on the Rachel Scott. According to the Rachel’s Challenge website, she was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.

Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America.

Two more against annexation Two more names have been added to the list of citizens who will provide “con” statements in the Voters Pamphlet regarding Enumclaw’s library annexation issue.

When members of the Enumclaw City Council originally forwarded names to the King County Department of Records and

Elections, only Charles Sansone was listed. Later, the names of JoAn McKinlay and Una Waldron were forwarded to the county.

They will write the formal statement opposing the April 17 ballot item that would, if passed, see the city of Enumclaw annexed into the King County Library System. Ownership

and operation of the library would shift to the district and be out of the city’s hands. Property owners would begin paying taxes to support the district operation.

Providing the “pro” position in support of annexation will be Rich Elfers, Richard Hughes and Barbara Braun.

SESSION FROM 1 Senate have not been able to find a solution they could send to the governor to sign. The governor had called a 17-day special session in December to get a running start on the budget, but the numbers eluded lawmakers.

Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, R-Enumclaw, said the Legislature “wasted the first half on things that were not relevant to the budget. We were there for a supplemental budget.”

Dahlquist said the special session has been called for 30 days and now all the bills go back to the “house of origin.”

The representative said if a member decides to spend time on a “crazy bill” instead of the budget, that member can do it.

The first two days of the session are pro forma, which means only a few leaders from the House and Senate will work on the budget. The rest of the members return today, Wednesday.

The Senate Republican passed a budget when three Democrats voted with the Republicans giving Rs a 25-24 majority vote on their budget. The Republicans – with the three Democratic senators Tim Sheldon of Potlatch, Rodney Tom, Bellevue and Jim Kastama, Puyallup – approved a Ninth Order procedure allowing the budget to go to the floor without a public hearing.

The Senate budget was not approved by the House by March 8. Without a budget from the Legislature, Gregoire called the special session.

Dahlquist said she ran over to watch when she heard the Ninth Order had been called.

“I was so proud of those three Democrats,” she said.

Rep. Chris Hurst, D-Greenwater, said he will be in Olympia from the beginning of the special session working on reform bills.

Hurst said there are several reform measures, “the moderates are pressing for” before the budget is signed and sealed.

One of the reform bills is Senate Bill 8222, which calls for a state Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget based on a four-year outlook.

Hurst stated the governor is required by the Constitution to submit a balance budget, but the Legislature is not.

He said the bill would mean the Legislature must pass not only a balanced budget, but one that is sustainable.

“This will keep us from ever getting back into this position again,” Hurst said. “This can put us in a place where we will never have an unsustainable budget again.”

Another reform measure is House Bill 2598 and SB 6345, calling for the formation of an “Arrow Commission.”

This would be a commission of senior statesman, probably no longer in office, who would review and make recommendations on upper-level management.

“This is a way to restructure and reform middle- and upper-level government,” Hurst said. “And it gives an outside view. It would reinstitute a lot of confidence in government.”

Both measures are referendums which requires a twothirds majority in the House and Senate and would go to the voters in November. If the bills are passed, neither one would go to the governor, but move directly to the general election.

Hurst said during the special session the Legislature will need to pass “major reform and a bipartisan budget.”

Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, believes the chances of the Legislature coming to an agreement on the budget are about “50-50. If not the governor will probably call another special session for a couple of days.”

Roach said the governor is stating if the Legislature cannot come up with a budget, she (the governor) will make 10 percent cuts across the board.

“That would mean doing some very bad things.” Roach said. “If nothing happens that is what she (Gregoire ) is going to do.”

Roach said the members met in a special session in December, worked through the session and now are in another special session “addressing the same thing.”

The senator said one of the priorities she is looking for is a study commission for Rainier School.

Roach said some government costs can be reined in by “cutting costs at DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services.”

COMMITTED: Officers responded March 7 to a Griffin Avenue address and made contact with a person who was eventually committed to St. Elizabeth Hospital on a voluntary basis. A search warrant was executed and both drugs and drug paraphernalia were seized.

UNWANTED: A report was issued March 7 of a man blocking another person from entering a Warner Avenue apartment. An officer responded and determined it was a civil dispute regarding rent and apartment management was to handle an eviction.

GETTING SICK: A woman contacted police the afternoon of March 3, complaining that someone had put something in her drink that caused her to become ill.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: A man was taken into custody the morning of March 2 and booked on assault and resisting arrest charges.

SUSPICIOUS: An adult male was seen loitering outside a Cole Street bank shortly before 8 a.m. March 2. An officer recognized the man and provided him transportation to his Griffin Avenue residence. About 30 minutes later, police were told the man had returned to the bank and was banging on the front door.

Police returned and, after talking with bank staff, determined the man had an account there. He was allowed to wait by the door until the bank opened at 9 a.m.

SHOTS NEAR SCHOOL: A school official called police at 10:47 a.m.

March 1, reporting what was thought to be gunshots coming from a nearby location, across 244th Avenue Southeast. An officer determined where the shots were coming from, noted that it was an “open shoot” area and learned that the property owner was aware of what was going on. The owner agreed to make sure there were no children were outside the school the next time. Both Sunrise and Southwood elementary schools were advised of the situation.

VEHICLE PROWL: A Hunter Court resident reported March 4 a vehicle prowl had occurred the previous night. Taken were an iPod and two Nintendo games. The value of the missing items was estimated at $550. There were no immediate suspects.

WARRANT ARREST: Police searched March 4 for a vehicle reportedly being driven by an impaired motorist. When stopped it was determined the driver was not under the influence. A passenger, however, was found to be wanted on an Auburn arrest warrant and was soon turned over to Auburn authorities.

ROAD RAGE: A motorist called police March 4 reporting a road rage incident stemming from an incident that nearly involved an accident. The caller was being followed by the other involved party but, when the caller pulled over, the other person kept going. The caller declined an

WANTED ON WARRANT: A driver was stopped shortly before 1 a.m.

March 8 and taken into custody for driving with a suspended license; he also was wanted on an Enumclaw Municipal Court warrant for not having an interlock device. The driver was booked, then released upon receipt of $30,000 bond.

HIT AND RUN: A citizen flagged down an officer the afternoon of March 8 on Railroad Street, reporting a hit-and-run incident. The suspect driver fled eastbound on Griffin Avenue.

HELPING HAND: Police were alerted March 8 to a woman staggering along Cole Street. An officer made contact, determined she had just been released from St. Elizabeth Hospital and provided a ride to a downtown hotel where she had a room.

PURSE STOLEN: Police were told of a residential burglary that occurred during the early-morning

VULGAR SIGN: Police responded March 6 to a Garfield Street address to address a dispute between neighbors. A vulgar sign had been put up, aimed at the reporting party. All involved were contacted, the issue was settled and the sign was taken down.

SUMNER ASSIST: Enumclaw police assisted Sumner authorities March 6. Sumner was working on a case involving threats against a person and had probable cause to arrest a suspect who works in Enumclaw. Enumclaw police located the suspect and detained him at the station until Sumner police arrived to take custody.

VEHICLE ENTERED: A Carbon Ridge resident told police the morning of March 5 someone had gone through a vehicle during the previous weekend but nothing was taken.

Workshop to address agriculture land issues As part of an ongoing commitment to support agriculture while sustaining a healthy environment, King County is offering workshops with free assistance to farmers who need help with field-drainage issues related to fish and wildlife regulations. One of those sessions will be in Enumclaw.

“We want to help landowners maintain properly functioning drainage systems affordably and in a way that considers fish and wildlife issues,” said Mark Isaacson, director of King County’s Water and Land Resources Division.

Maintaining farm field drainage ditches has become

complicated during the past 20 years because many of the ditches – which are often altered streams – are home to Chinook salmon and other species protected by the federal Endangered Species Act. The Enumclaw workshop will run from 7 to 9 p.m. March 22 at Enumclaw

At the workshops, staff from the county’s agriculture program and the King Conservation District will show participants how to get free, coordinated services from King County and the King Conservation District so maintenance projects can be done in an efficient, costeffective manner.

Agriculture Commissioners to track the new effort and ensure its success.

Free services through ADAP include waterway surveys and fish relocation, if needed. Also, ADAP will reimburse landowners for any planting that might be required on the banks of the waterway.

After nearly four years and many papers, I have landed back in Enumclaw as editor of The Courier-Herald.

Since I helped start The Bonney Lake Courier-Herald I know a few things about the community.

I was raised in Enumclaw and my mother’s side of our family has been here since before the turn of the last century. I think that makes me very old.

I always smile, though, when someone tells me how they represent Dennis Box and know the city Editor of Enumclaw. I figure I should come up with a friendly quiz to see if someone really knows anything about Enumclaw and the surrounding area including Buckley, Black Diamond and Bonney Lake.

Here are a few quiz questions.

1. Spell Van Wieringen without looking it up.

2. How many dead-man corners are in Enumclaw and what are the stories.

3. Where was the Polish district?

4. Where was the rest stop on state Route 410.

5. Name the president of Enumclaw National Bank who played football for Enumclaw High in the 1930s.

6. What was on the four corners of downtown. (By the way, people from Enumclaw of my time don’t know the names of the streets and there is only one downtown. I’m still surprised when I notice there is a second light in town.)

7. Where was the Eaton homestead and where was the original home the family moved from?

8. Who bought the Gulan farm and where in Enumclaw did the Gulans move?

I don’t think that makes Brian Beckley a liberal commentator. I am surprised at how frequently letter writers refer to someone else as a liberal or a conservative in a name-calling fashion. I am pro-life so people who oppose that tell me disdainfully that I am a conservative, as if that diminishes my views. I am passionate about civil rights, especially involving gay marriage, so my opponents call me a liberal in a way that is intended to be offensive. I would prefer that we manage to be civil toward one another and stop the name calling.

I marched for civil rights in Detroit in the ‘60s and I march for gay rights in Seattle. How is it not civil rights when it is a right granted to some people and not to others? Some churches are using the Bible as a weapon against same-sex marriage. Generally these are the same churches that used the Bible to condone slavery.

I think the misunderstanding regarding gay marriage comes from people who insist that it can only be a religious ceremony. Marriage is a civil ceremony and some people choose to have it performed in a church. One writer to the editor stated, “Marriage is a commitment or a vow taken between you and your

spouse before God...” Many atheists marry in our country and they do not believe their civil ceremony was performed before God. Churches did not perform ceremonies routinely until the 12th century. Greek warlords sent their daughters to be married to the sons of warlords to create alliances. There was no religion involved.

Kudos to the churches who do honor the dignity of all by officiating at same sex marriages, but that isn’t what the proposed law is about. It is about civil rights.

Again best wishes to Brian Beckley and all other couples, gay or straight, who choose to honor their commitment by making it legal.

Rejects columnist’s view on same-sex marriage In response to an interesting editorial on Feb. 29, 2012, titled: “Everyone should be allowed happiness” by our local liberal commentator, Brian Beckley: I do not share Brian’s enthusiasm for the recent decisions by the Washington state legislators and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in legally recognizing marriage for homosexuals. Brian said, “I’ve heard all the arguments against gay marriage and I find them all to be bigoted piles of horse pucky.” So to not cast pearls before swine, I would like to address a few of Brian’s cow scat arguments.

I am a conservative, one who believes in a small, nonintrusive government that encourages and allows the people of this nation to better

themselves. The beginning of the civil rights movement in 1948 was a proper step for our government to ensure an environment “where all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration of Independence).

How can he possibly consider homosexual behavior a “civil rights issue”?

If a Hispanic or Asian American walks down the street, I know this by the color of their skin. If a homosexual walks down the same street, I have no idea what their sexual preference is, nor do I care. The civil rights movement was about the equal treatment and opportunity for all persons without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin. It makes no reference to your sexual preference. The government should have no interest in what legal sexual behavior a person does in the privacy of their home or their sexual preference.

I am not ashamed to say that I attempt to live my life in a manner that is pleasing to my savior, Jesus Christ. Can I live by God’s law? No. Nor can Brian. I take offense to his claim that I “want to force someone else to live by your God’s (Brian’s God, too, as he’ll discover on Judgment Day) rules. That’s what is known in some parts of the world as “shariah law.” Is Brian suggesting that when a Christian stands on God’s principles, they’re attempting to instill Muslim sharia law? It’s crystal clear that he has no concept of Christian values or what Muslim sharia law is exactly. In my daily walk, I will treat a homo-

City should not lose control of its public library Note: the following is in response to a letter (CourierHerald, March 7) submitted

by Richard Elfers.

Really Mr. Elfers? Close our 94-year-old library after city residents paid off a $1 million bond for the library building? Who says the alternative to library annexation is library closure? Certainly not the citizens who approved this bond. Nowhere in the proposition for library annexation does it say that if it fails, the alternative is library closure. City Resolution 1396, the document authorizing City Council to “explore the possibility of annexation to the King County Library System (KCLS),” does not say it’s either annexation or library closure. Instead, it mandates council evaluate other funding alternatives in a “public process,” something council refused

to do.

Council instead created a breakdown in the democratic process and failed in its fiduciary responsibility to the public. Regardless of countless citizen “no to KCLS annexation” statements made before council, you and others on City Council steadfastly resisted compliance with Resolution 1396. You never considered alternative funding options.

April 20, 2011 – the mayor and city administrator promised to have staff draw up a 10-year library budget and create a working group to investigate alternative funding options.

This was never done and council barred the Library Board from all discussions with KCLS and even tried to strong arm the board to prevent them from voicing opinions contrary to “city desires.”

Even the former library director was kept quiet and kept out of the city’s decision process on annexation to KCLS. And now you and some still on council are threatening residents with the statement that if they turn down the proposition to annex, the library will close. It seems like the city council simply wants to be done with it and wash their hands of the library. And interestingly, some council members have never been seen in the library and they know not what they do.

es our library, you never know what you’re going to get. There is no guarantee how much of the new KCLS tax levy of 50 cents per $1,000 will return to our library, a library KCLS identifies as a “small district library.” There’s no guarantee there may not be an increase in that levy tax. The city of Renton KCLS library annexation caused a huge unexpected tax levy increase when after annexation, KCLS decided the current library building was inadequate and then mandated Renton residents pay for two new library buildings in addition to their 50 cents/$1,000 levy tax. And don’t forget the fiasco with Enumclaw’s fire department annexation to District 28 and the recent discussions to raise those taxes. Do citizens really expect they won’t see the same thing happen with the KCLS library tax?

There already is an agreement between libraries that gives us full access to all KCLS libraries, assets and website. Why pay more for something we already have (our city-run library with funding and taxation under our control and rights as KCLS members) when there are sound alternatives for funding our library besides annexation to KCLS? You say the budget is tight, yet council is spending $25,000 for this premature vote before alternatives to annexation have been reviewed. In May 2011, council seriously pro-

posed spending $296,000 for a vacant lot downtown to build a park for children so their parents can shop nearby – and this when there is an existing city park 1 ½ blocks away. Totaled together, these amounts are well over half the library’s annual budget.

There are adequate city funds available for the library. From its beginnings as a tiny city surrounded by its farming community, the citizens of Enumclaw have for 94 years strongly supported its library, making it a “jewel in the crown,” giving countless residents joy and support in their lives, both as children and as adults.

We will have to see on April 17 if residents agree with you Mr. Elfers, that they are willing to deed over control of their unique and wonderful library to the larger KCLS that does not have in its mind-set our kind of community library.

Burning can be done legally, even if some complain

It matters not where you live, in relation to them. If there is smoke rising anywhere in her/their horizon; near their homes or not, a complaint, using Stipulation No.10 of title permit, is made to the fire department. One even had the temerity to drive 200 feet into my private driveway to confirm the fire on my property, 900 feet back off the road.

When Stipulation No. 10 is translated into commonly understood American English properly, one must be a true “neighbor” to complain about “nuisance” smoke. That is reasonable and acceptable.

What is not reasonable is for a complaint to be made by anyone so self-important that rights of others are called into question for cancellation. Obviously some people in our area believe themselves more important than others, no matter how distant.

So, be sure you burn legal and carry on. Let’s hope that those nonqualified complainers get heartburn out of your burn pile.

Ryan Chynoweth, son of Regina and Tony Chynoweth of Enumclaw, was the January recipient from Enumclaw High School.

Chynoweth has a 3.985 grade-point average.

He is a member of the high school leadership team and also serves as captain for both the football and basketball teams. He hopes to become a math teacher.

Molly Colyer, daughter of Debbie Colyer of Enumclaw and Todd Colyer of Bonney Lake, was the recipient from Enumclaw High.

A National Honor Society member, Colyer has a 3.9 GPA. Her activities include high school and club volleyball, school leadership team and Key Club. She hopes to have a career as a dental hygienist and is planning to attend either Washington State University or Pierce College, where she would also play volleyball.



Carol was born September 7, 1923, a home birth to Dora & Carl G. Strand in South Prairie. She graduated from Buckley High School in 1941. Her first employment was at the Fort Lewis PX followed by the Enumclaw Creamery and the Enumclaw US Bank, retired from the La Pine US Bank. Carol was a self taught harmonies and piano player. She had a great affection for cats, dogs, birds and deer as they always appreciated her handouts.

She succumbed to Alzheimer’s on January 14, 2012. Services were held at First Presbyterian Church in Bend, OR on January 28th, 2012 where she was buried next to her husband Kenneth M. Kellogg, U.S.N. Radioman.

She is survived by her daughter, Jill Bestwick (Rick) of Corvallis, OR; her son, Mark Kellogg of OR; her sister, Shirley Nickelsen (George) of Auburn, WA; cousin, Mollie Robertson of Tacoma, WA; longtime friends Betty Ross ( Jack) of Buckley, WA and Betty Wright of Anacortes, WA; grandchildren Cody Bauer and Valayshea Schaeffer and numerous nieces and nephews.

The city of Enumclaw’s Gallery 2012 is now offering “All the Colors of the Rainbow,” featuring the work of painter Lyudmila Simpson.

Her show opened Thursday and continues through April 3.

According to Gary LaTurner, who heads the city’s Cultural Programs office, Simpson’s paintings are wellcrafted expressions of her heritage, often inspired by Ukrainian folk art.

She also creates paintings inspired by European masters.

Simpson was born in the Ukraine and was educated to become an economist.

In 2006 she met Richard Simpson and they were married in 2008. In January of 2010, they immigrated to the

United States along with her son Alex Lerman.

“My inspiration is so strong that I have the desire to paint in every spare moment,” Simpson said in a prepared statement. “Ukrainian folk art is of interest to me. Ukrainian folk art ornaments are filled with bright colors of the rainbow, imitating peaceful environments in the Ukraine.”

Gallery 2012 is in the council chambers at Enumclaw City Hall, 1339 Griffin Ave. Hours for the exhibition space are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Doris Lee “Dodi” Birkholz

Doris Lee “Dodi” Birkholz, a 21 year Grays Harbor resident, passed-away Saturday, March 3, 2012 in McCleary after battling a long illness. She was 76. Doris was born June 8, 1935 in Belcourt, North Dakota to Louis and Evelyn (Schindler) LaFrance. She grew up in North Dakota and attended High School in Stephan, South Dakota. Dodi attended Green River Community College in Auburn where she earned her nursing degree in 1966. Dodi was married to Bruce Bockness. She later married Leroy Birkholz on May 31, 1985 in McCleary. He survives her at the family home in McCleary. Dodi worked at the Enumclaw Hospital for many years where she worked in labor, delivery & nursing. She was very proud of her work there especially when her efforts resulted in the help of delivering and taking care of new mothers and their babies. She also worked at Valley Medical Center in Renton. Dodi is a past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was an avid fisherperson. She enjoyed craft painting (especially teaching painting). She loved entertaining at home for friends and family. No one was ever a stranger around Dodi, everyone was always welcome. She was the life of the party. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Dodi is the recipient of a donor kidney over eleven years ago. The kidney was donated by Pastor Denny Hines. Pastor Denny’s gift allowed Dodi to be present at the birth of her great-grandchildren and for that she and her family will always be grateful. In addition to her husband, Leroy, Dodi is survived by a daughter, Burnetta “Bunny” Bockness Milam and her fiancé, Rell Thedford of McCleary and a son, Byron B. Bockness and his fiancé, Kathryn Bruner also of McCleary. Dodi is also survived by 5 sisters; Donna LaFrance (John Frost), Eatonville, WA, Darlene Revell (Jack) Blue, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sharon Ruth LaFrance, Minneapolis, Emma Cookie (Richard) Bihler, Minneapolis and Lawanda Gibbs, Branson, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Louis LaFrance II. Visitation will be 4-9PM Friday, March 9, 2012 at Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma.

Fortunately, one of those foreboding vacancies has been filled. Last week Greg moved Europa out of the antique mall and into Panini’s empty space. Now, if someone would just purchase the old bank building (MacRae’s), our town would begin to look more like the healthy and prosperous community it is.

Anyway, drop by the new Europa and say hello to Greg. And while you’re at it, try some Italian macaroni salad or some potato pancakes (latkes) served with applesauce or sour cream. Greg plans to expand his dinner menu to include more beef entrees, as opposed to pork, and a broader selection of soups. I enjoyed the egg and salmon crepes.

a life that can endure, can grow and mature into a person of great character and compassion. Jesus is the way back to God for a world that has been lost for millennia in a fruitless cycle of violence and greed, of anger and hate.

But we’ve had enough “untrue” remedies and solutions. We’ve had enough of the same old thing with a different name. We’ve had enough of scheming and fighting to get to the top and too bad for the rest of the suckers who don’t win. We need something true, something good; we need Jesus to bring us out of this messy world and into God’s world again. I believe it’s true; Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

And I think we need a lot more truth in this world, don’t you?

understanding of true things is imperfect, that doesn’t render the truth imperfect.

So when I read the words of Jesus saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me,” I begin to wonder just what that really means. I have lots of ideas – and some of them might even be right, or partly right, or correct but incomplete – but what I really want to understand is what Jesus meant. And I want to understand it because I think it is true. I believe what Jesus said is real.

And so there is a way in which we find true life, genuine life, there is a truth that has impact on our very being, on our way of thinking and acting and Jesus is the source of that life. Jesus is the “way” of finding and living that life. Jesus is the source of

So the professor looks at me and says, “Your problem, Bruce, is that you believe in truth. But there aren’t any such absolutes.

There are no absolutes.” To which I replied, “Does that include your absolute statement that there are no absolutes?” And he was a really good professor, who smiled and said that was a good point! The idea that there is no truth except what is relative to our perception is logically self-contradictory.

Something that is true, something that is real, something that is factual exists whether we ever notice it or not. Gravity worked before Newton. The earth was round before Columbus (and he really wasn’t the first person to stipulate that). And even if our

OBITUARIES ORVEL PARKHURST Orvel Jack Parkhurst died Feb. 25, 2012.

He was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Cherry County, Neb., the youngest of 13 children born to Daniel and Ella Wrinick Parkhurst.

He spent his early years in Nebraska and married Arlene Parker on Sept. 10, 1942. They moved to Washington state during World War Orvel Parkhurst II and he entered the U.S. Army in December 1943. He landed in France six days after D-Day and spent the remainder of the war there in the infantry. He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. After the war he returned to Washington, first working in the pole yards in Olympia and later for the U.S. Maritime. He remained there until his reserve fleet was disbanded. Beginning in the early 1970s, he and his wife spent winters in Arizona, eventually purchasing a recreational vehicle park in Zuartzsite, Ariz. In 2000 they sold the park and settled in Rainier, Wash.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Arlene; children Gene Parkhurst and wife Patsy, Ivan Parkhurst and wife Rose and Ione Gregory and husband Ron; sister Mildred of Nebraska; and six grand-

Enumclaw resident William Gene Burleson, 83, died March 5, 2012, at Valley Medical Center in Renton. He died due to complications from cancer.

He was born Oct. 23, 1928, in Tatum, N.M., and lived in New Mexico and California before settling in Washington with his wife Lois. He William Burleson was a Marine and a veteran of the Korean War. He worked at Boeing as an engineer for 18 years, then left to raise chickens and follow his passion as a custom home builder. He was a founder of the Washington Fryer Commission, a member of the Master Builders Association and was paymaster for the Marine Corp League in Enumclaw.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Burleson; daughters Debbie Russell and husband Bill and Jodi Warren and husband Jerry, all of Maple Valley; and 17 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Wabash Church, 18325 SE 384th St. in Auburn. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 S.E. 240th St. in Kent.

BETH THIEMAN Longtime Buckley resident Beth Thieman, 92, died March 5, 2012, in Enumclaw.

She was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Rochester, Minn., to Roy and Vivian Moulton. She enjoyed horseback riding, bowling and playing cards, especially pinochle.

She is survived by son Gary Thieman and wife Carol of Buckley, three grandchildren Beth Thieman and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Wilbur and Kenneth Moulton; sister Mildred Goldberry; son Richard Thieman; and granddaughter Karen Renee Thieman.

A graveside service took place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Buckley City Cemetery.

When Western Washington University students celebrate winter commencement March 17, they will hear from graduating senior Bethany Fromong of Enumclaw, who will give the student commencement address.

Approximately 400 undergraduates and about 13 master’s candidates will receive degrees this quarter. Winter commencement includes all majors and only one ceremony will take place.

Fromong is graduating from WWU with a degree in theatre arts. She has played a critical role in theatre productions at Western, in the Bellingham community and beyond. She recently was selected to present her design concept for the play “Terra Nova” at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival at Colorado State University.

The daughter of Clark and Tricia Fromong, she grew up in Enumclaw and is a graduate of Enumclaw High School.

“It took a while, but we were willing to wait until

we found the right one,” said Susan Guillen who, along with Pat Garrett, led the search committee.

They were joined by Keith Lewis, Jon Rifmiller, Sharon Lovinger and Cathy Dormaier. The group sorted through the candidates and then did

phone and Skype interviews. They called a few for in-person interviews and eventually selected Rice. His leadership qualities were a good match with those the committee was seeking, Guillen said.

“We had a really good feeling he would be good

She said Rice will be able to look at the congregation with fresh eyes to see its strengths and also find ways for the congregation to reach out to the community.

“It feels very good,” Rice said of the brief time he has spent here and the people he’s met. “I find they are very accepting, very hospitable people. I feel a warm reception and connection.”

Prior to that he spent time in Everett, Beaverton, Ore., and Caldwell, Idaho.

He grew up in Seattle’s Rainier Valley, graduating from Franklin High School in 1968 and was part of the 1970s walk out of students and faculty that started Concordia Seminary-inExcile in Missouri, where he graduated with a master’s in divinity.

One of his strengths lies in worship and he will look to strengthen that program at Trinity Lutheran, where average weekly worship attendance for the two services – traditional and a more contemporary gathering – is 135.

Rice said the church has a strong youth program and he would like to build up the adult education program as well, but he’s really excited to meet people and see where there are needs.

He and his wife are also looking for a place to live in the community.

Colleen, his wife, is a neonatal intensive care nurse, who is holding down the fort in Sedro Woolley for the time.

“They will make a great addition to the community,” Guillen said.

When he’s not leading worship services and tending to the flock, he enjoys cooking and tags himself a cinephile, who admits with the move and new position he fell behind on the Oscar buzz. He has a special interest in indie films and at one time put together a “faith and film” class.

“I like it when there’s a good story,” he said.

Louisa Boren Denny was a Seattle Founding Pioneer. She was the wife of David Thomas Denny, sister of Carson Dobbins Boren and Mary Ann (Boren) Denny. She arrived on the shores of what would become the future City of Seattle on November 13, 1851. After marrying David Denny in 1853, Liza took seeds she carried over two thousand miles and planted them outside their cabin on what is now Denny Way. The bulk of the cleanup from the The January ice and Evergreen snow storm has been accomplished and Arborist life is returning to normal. Arborists Dennis Tompkins were not spared as Columnist I hauled away four pickup loads of debris from flowering plums, several ornamental cherries and Leyland cypress trees.

The following are observations from spending the last seven weeks inspecting trees, performing renovation pruning and conducting hazard assessments to determine if damaged trees were safe to retain.

Tall conifer trees like Douglas fir fared much better than during the last ice and snow storm in December of 1995.

However, deciduous trees were devastated by the 2012 version in many communities.

Most trees sprang back to their normal upright appearances after two days of being coated with ice. The weight caused branches to touch the ground and others to snap off. Unfortunately, many trees have not straightened up to date.

For some homeowners, remodeling projects are regular occurrences to keep their homes looking fresh.

Sometimes, that means smaller changes like a new coat of paint or changing a light fixture. Other times, more substantial changes are needed. Determining those changes can be a challenge, but looking at the potential return on investment is a great way to prioritize.

Bathroom remodeling offers a 68.7 percent return on investment, according to a National Association of Realtors survey. One way to add value to a bathroom remodel is to pick bathroom fixtures that are more efficient than what you currently have installed.

Americans are going green in many areas of life, whether with more energy-efficient light bulbs, hybrid cars or by recycling more regularly. Bathroom fixtures are no different.

Here are three reasons why you should consider going green with your bathroom modeling project: • Products may be outdated. Toilets made before 1994 use anywhere from 3.5 gallons to 8 gallons per flush, while new EPA WaterSense-labeled high-efficiency toilets can work beautifully on a modest 1.28 gpf. Not sure of your toilet’s vintage? Look at the underside of the tank lid – the date of manufacture is often stamped into the porcelain.

In the shower, older showerheads can use as much as 2.5 gallons per minute. At that rate, an eight-minute shower consumes a whopping 20 gallons of water.

type of tree is to attempt to reduce the weight of the guilty branches. Cutting off cracked or broken branches or removing the outer sections will often cause a branch to straighten up.

Here are a few more tips regarding the most common problems.

Flowering plums and other ornamentals: These trees were probably the most severely damaged. Many large branches broke and had to be cut out where reachable. I observed dozens that were probably overtrimmed to where only the main trunk and a few large branches were left.

Flowering plums will sprout prolifically this spring and this new growth can grow up to 6 feet a year. In some instances, the sprouts can be thinned out to encourage an attractive new crown to develop. However, decisions will be made over the next few years as whether to cut some trees because they are not shaping up very well.

Arborvitae: Many tall arborvitae hedges suffered heavy damage.

Branches that are still leaning will not straighten up. Some can be removed without leaving a gaping hole. Others can be partially cut to reduce the weight and may straighten up.

The real ambitious homeowners can attempt to straighten the branches and tie them together with rope or twine.

Topping the hedges at a certain height may be the only way to salvage some of them. The woody stubs that will be visible should begin to fill in after a year or two. In many instances, tall hedges may have to be cut in half to remove most of the damaged tops.

Birches, alders and cottonwoods: Many of these trees were slaughtered as they lost thousands of branches and tops. Broken limbs that are hung up in the tops of the trees may have to be left because of the difficulty in reaching them. If any are hanging over a structure or area of heavy use, a tree service should be contacted to remove them.

Renovation pruning: Valuable and favorite ornamental landscape trees can be carefully pruned to rebalance the crowns or to encourage small branches and new sprouts to begin to fill in voids.

Since she had a knack for creating tasty treats and the artistic touch that allowed her creations to stack up against professionallydone cakes and cupcakes, Lauk decided to jump into business. The result is Kim’s Sweet Dream Cakes, an operation the young entrepreneur runs out of her Enumclaw home.

Lauk is willing to tackle most anything, from dozens of cupcakes for informal gatherings to elaborate wedding creations. For truly special occasions, she will work in advance with customers, sketching out exactly what is desired.

Her prices are competitive, Lauk said, and rush orders aren’t out of the question. For more elaborate orders, she said, a couple of weeks lead time is appreciated. In the end, customers can pick up their orders or Lauk offers free delivery in the local area.

Aashiem returns to Cole Street

There is a familiar face standing behind the chair at Dick’s Barbershop in Enumclaw.

The latest addition joining the hair-cutting crew at 1452 Cole St. is Kellee Aashiem, who started in January. Aasheim owned an Enumclaw-based barbershop down the street for several years. She will be in the shop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.

She joins Lynn Mathiason, Allison Morefield, Kara Mathiason and Chuck Anselmo.

Dick’s Barbershop has been a part of the Cole Street landscape since 1962 and is open Monday through Saturday, no appointment needed.

New focus takes additional space

One of Enumclaw’s growing businesses has outpaced its former space and moved into new, larger quarters.

Transmogrif y, owned by Darami and Chris Coulter, packed up and left its 4,600-square-foot location on Blake Street in early February. The new home is a 10,000-square-foot suite at 1725 Garrett Street.

The need for more space reflects the expanded offerings presented by the Coulters and the 15 Transmogrify employees.

Originally a production facility – when it went under the name The Printers Inc. – the firm has expanded since the Coulters purchased the business in April 2009.

“We have expanded from a production company to help our clients’ business grow,” Darami Coulter said. “Now, we look at the bigger picture.”

That means starting at ground zero with a client and looking at everything from marketing plans to the strength of competitors. Transmogrify is now a full-service agency, Coulter said, with the ability to offer clients help with social media, website development, branding and the placement of print and electronic advertising.

The expanded efforts, along with technological advancements, means Transmogrify can – with the push of a button – serve clients almost anywhere.

“We have clients off over the

globe,” Coulter said, using a customer in Dubai as a prime example of how the business world can operate.

Coulter estimates 85 percent of her business comes from outside the area. But that doesn’t

mean Transmogrify ignores local folks.

“We love our local clients,” she said, noting that the company has dealt with perhaps 1,800 customers during the past 12 months.

Grass clippings are a free source of nitrogen. I saw it like Mark Twain saw being editor, “Please God, do anything to me but make me a publisher.”

I am an editor. People look at me and laugh if I asked for money. My mother wouldn’t even give me money, for good reason.

What I try to do is simplify everything, which is very practical for my misfiring brain. When it comes to news coverage we try to tell the truth and be fair. It is that simple, and at times very difficult.

Opinions are not news stories, despite what many in our business think these days. Opinion pieces must be carefully separated from

news coverage, or the paper will end up losing.

I was well known in Kent for one infamous act.

I tried a scientific experiment where I hard boiled three eggs in the microwave. Who knew after eight minutes the eggs would blow the door off the microwave. They are supposed to be stupid eggs, not bombs. At least that was what I thought prior to the door blowing open.

That has been hard one to live down. I intend to refine that experiment over the next few months and send the triumphant results to Kent – those naysayers.

The Courier-Herald is blessed with a very good editorial, creative and sales staff. That makes my job much easier.

EHS’s Mongrain is scholarship winner Enumclaw High’s Sara Mongrain was the winner in a regional scholarship contest, as announced by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Competing were students from the Enumclaw, Auburn, Kent and Federal school districts.

Mongrain was selected by the Enumclaw High School Staff as the school’s DAR Good Citizen. Only one student per year may be honored. The DAR Good Citizen program and scholarship contest is intended to reward the qualities of good citizenship. The student selected must have qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Grade transcripts are also sent; Mongrain has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school.

Each school’s DAR Good Citizen is eligible to enter the scholarship contest by completing an essay administered under the supervision of a faculty member at one sitting.

Mongrain’s qualifications and essay have now advanced to the state level of judging.

Opponents complain it will be years before those reserves show up at the pump, but they’ve been saying that for 30 years. If we had developed those reserves 30 years ago, we would have a stable domestic supply of crude oil by now. Yes, we live in a global marketplace and oil producers may put U.S. oil on the world market, but any increase in world oil supplies moderates prices, regardless of where it’s sold.

dite approval of the Keystone Pipeline to bring more oil from our friends in Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.

Remember, Canada historically has been our best friend.

Perhaps most importantly, our political leaders, from President Obama down to local elected officials, need to understand the link between a stable energy supply and a strong economy.

A secure supply of reasonably priced energy is essential if our economy is to provide jobs and fairly priced consumer goods for struggling families.
