High School & Beyond Planning H

igh school students in the State of Washington have a unique opportunity to plan for their high school career and beyond. High schools in our state will be expected to engage students more in their learning, to connect learning to the real world, and require that each student have a plan for after graduation. This plan may include many options: four-year college, community college, technical college, specialty schools, apprenticeship programs, the military, or on-the-job training.

To assist students to be responsible and engaged in their education, the 4 P’s have been established as a framework for addressing high school graduation requirements. This framework includes: a Plan, a Pathway/Program of

Study, a Portfolio, and a Project/ Presentation. This is designed to help students understand the “why” of their learning and how it will be applied in the future.

Work Study Program Benefits CKSD Students

F

ive Central Kitsap School District juniors were selected last spring for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility Work Study program.

The students worked during the summer between their junior and senior year and will work one semester during their senior year. They rotated through four different trades while receiving credit for their work hours, earning full federal benefits, and future career placement opportunities.

The students were selected based on their school attendance, grades, mechanical abilities, and extra-curricular activities.

Knowledge & Skills:

Specific work tasks performed on the job. They are related to the Industry Standards and/ or the Essential Academic Learning Requirements.

Portfolio A portfolio is a collection of student work documenting knowledge, skills, and experiences in and out of school. It documents pathway progress. The portfolio will enable a student to keep a record of their progress in these areas: • student as planner • student as learner • student as individual • student as worker (career development) Students who participate in a presentation of their portfolio will demonstrate how they have applied their skills and knowledge during their high school experience. They will also demonstrate self-advocacy skills and a connection between themselves and their community.

Project/Presentation Students must design and complete a culminating project on a topic of their choice, and present their project to other students, teachers, parents, and/ or community members. This requirement offers students an opportunity to apply their learning in a “real world” way.

School districts can set parameters for how students accomplish these projects.

Showcase of Community Support and Teamwork

T

he annual Outreach Dinner was proudly hosted by the Olympic High School DECA program on Tuesday, November 22 at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles club in Bremerton.

The dinner, in its 23rd year, is an amazing example of community support and teamwork, and provides a hearty Thanksgiving meal to those in need.

In the weeks prior to the event, Olympic High School students, along with Woodlands and Brownsville Elementary students, held food drives to collect canned food and non-perishable items, and the OHS Key Club collected hygiene products with the support of the Silverdale Kiwanis. These items were then bagged and donated to the guests before they left the dinner, along with an opportunity to select some clothing, shoes, and blankets collected by the OHS Honor Society. The OHS Graphic Arts program provided support by printing t-shirts for the student volunteers.

The day of the event, approximately ninety students, with seniors Jessica Hansen and Christian Bernett at the helm, along with several parents and OHS teachers, teamed with volunteers from the East Bremerton Rotary, US Navy, Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation, and WAVE Broadband to begin cooking. Student volunteers prepared the mashed potatoes, stuffing, and candied yams; while the Navy volunteers roasted

the turkeys and hams. Servings of pumpkin pie, vegetables, rolls, and cranberry sauce completed the feast.

The OHS choir provided entertainment by singing Christmas carols during the dinner.

The Olympic High School DECA students would like to thank all their sponsors and volunteers for supporting this worthwhile event.

nice days for three decades. In 30 years the benches have weathered heavily and in some cases were no longer safe for use due to the deterioration of the wood. refinishing all bench parts before re-assembly back in front of the school. Each rebuilt bench now provides comfortable seating for students during the day and at lunches near areas recently re-landscaped by other student groups at the school. It took nearly six weeks to complete the

refurbishing project, from parts fabrication to bench re-assembly, complete with a final coat of stain. The photos included here show students working with partners to complete each step of this impressive student pride project at Marcus Whitman Jr. High in Port Orchard WA.

North Kitsap will include a Program of Study (POS) model in next year's course catalogs The North Kitsap Career and Technical Education (CTE) department has been working hard on establishing strong pathways for students to follow from the middle school through high school and directly into apprenticeships, careers, or higher education. Using models developed by the consortium of district CTE directors North Kitsap will include a Program of Study (POS) model in their course catalogs next year. These POS's will help students as they make decisions on classes to take, not only to meet graduation requirements, but also to gain tech-prep and AP credits, as well as industry standard certifications throughout their four-years of high school. These credits, and/or certifications, will help them to save money as they enter post-secondary education or help to expedite them in their career field. The following POS's are being finalized for inclusion in the catalogs: Engineering, Health Science, and Business. Other programs will continue to be established and will be given to the counseling departments at the middle and high school levels as they are developed. North Mason DECA provides opportunities to students

N

orth Mason DECA has a lot to offer; it isn’t just a regular club. With travel, competition, community service and a huge international organization to back it, North Mason DECA is as unique and fun as it gets.

One of my personal favorite parts about North Mason DECA is the competitions. We are very competitive here in North Mason and we love winning! Last year three North Mason students made it to the international level of competition in Orlando, Florida.

DECA does a lot of traveling.

My favorite place to visit was

Washington D.C. We learned a lot at the conference in such a unique setting. The conference taught us a lot about marketing and business in general. We have also traveled to Orlando, Florida and New York, New York. We love attending our local conferences too, like the annual Fall Leadership Conference held in Bellevue each year.

Community service is a big part of North Mason DECA; we love to serve in our community and we annually put on food drives, clothing drives, a youth suicide prevention program, and fundraisers for the

Ronald McDonald House of Seattle.

The thing that is so unique about DECA is the fierce passion in all of the members.

“Joining DECA was the best decision I have made in high school because we are just a big family and so many doors are opened up through DECA” said DECA president, Jessica Jensen. Everyone loves the opportunities that DECA gives them. DECA has personally helped me meet new people and helped me decide what I want to do when I get out of high school. It also has gotten

me involved in the community and the school.

North Mason DECA gives all of its member’s great opportunities. Friendships, scholarships, service, fun, school involvement, and travel are just a few bonuses DECA gives along with business and marketing skills. There is nothing I don’t like about DECA, but my favorite thing is the great friendships I get to make with all the members. We motivate each other to do great things in and out of DECA. North Mason DECA is the greatest thing anyone can do in High School.

Shelton High School's Ecology of the Northwest

T

his past November, students in Shelton High School’s Ecology of the Northwest class took ninety-plus fourth graders from Mt. View Elementary School on their annual trip to Kennedy Creek to observe the spawning Chum salmon. The fourth grade pupils were divided into groups of eight. Each group had their own

high school docents to show and explain the habitat and spawning behaviors of the salmon.

The next week, the same elementary students traveled to Shelton High School over a period of several days to dissect salmon with the high school students.

the culminating assessment for the high school Ecology class Salmon/Stream habitat unit. For the fourth graders, this was part of their salmon science unit. High school students were very enthusi-

astic after teaching the elementary students, feeling they had fun while helping young kids learn.

The fourth graders loved working with and learning from the high school students.

Behind the Scenes: Stagecraft Projects

By Morgan Wiktorek We all started out as an awkward group of people that had nothing in common. Then as time went on we got to know each other. Though we lost a few people along the way, something amazing happened...we became a family.

We have set up and run shows from musicals to Chinese acrobats and through it all we have worked together like a well-oiled machine.

The first week Mr. Miser let us know that we, with no actual knowledge of what we were doing, had a show to set up and run. We made it through, and this is what started to cement the bonds of friendship.

Together we made five reindeer along with a life size Santa and sleigh. It took us two weeks to finish. We learned more in two weeks than we had ever before. It was tough at first, but as soon as we got the hang of it the time flew by. We drew, traced, cut out, painted, and finished it in the longest blink ever recorded by man.

Our first attempt at drawing the car didn't turn out so well.

Many of them were totally out of proportion; others didn't even look like a car. Then we discovered the

joys of projection tracing. Every car was perfect, with nice straight lines, and all the right proportions.

We were all ecstatic. This is the process we used for the beginning steps of our reindeer, and I think it would have taken a lot longer had we not known of projection tracing.

The only problem was the fact that our shadows kept getting in the way.

Soldering was, by far, the hardest thing we have done all semester. First of all, we couldn't seem to help ourselves from burning our fingers every few minutes trying to get that darn red wire to fit into the cup that we had tinned, and of course, while we were struggling, Mr. Miser was finishing connector after connector, asking us when we were going to get done, as it was taking us an hour to finish, whereas it takes him only a few minutes. We eventually found, through much trial and error, that working in a group is a lot better than struggling all by yourself and still not succeeding.

Studying Salmon What’s DECA

T

he Natural Resources Earth Science classes at Oakland Bay Junior High School in Shelton visited Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail in mid-November to observe the salmon migration. The return of the spawning salmon exemplifies the biogeochemical cycle which is a focus area the students have been studying. The Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail is a project

of the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group and Mason Conservation District. Taylor Shellfish and Green Diamond have donated the use of their property where the trail is located. This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience science in action as well as to see the cultural connection to this great natural resource.

helton High School’s DECA Chapter has been busy this year. We started off this fall by taking forty-eight DECA members to the three-day Fall Leadership conference in Bellevue. Many students will compete at DECA Area competition this January in hopes of advancing to our State Career Development Conference in early March. The best of the best will go on to compete in Salt Lake City, Utah in the spring.

Besides leadership, group and promotional activities, and competition, we have opportunities to focus on the community. DECA students held a toy drive and yard clean-up day for Turning Pointe Domestic Violence Shelter in December. DECA performs

volunteer work on a regular basis through the Shelton School District and continues to stay involved throughout the year.

Later this year, we are planning a food drive for Saints Pantry and a fundraiser for The Ronald McDonald House.

DECA activities are not just outside of school; we have hosted several guest speakers in Marketing and DECA classes. One of our favorites was the Washington State Patrol. Students have also completed mock interviews after learning interview skills and creating a resume. It’s Looking Better for Careers in Information Technology: Are you prepared?

According to an article by Carolyn Duffy Marsan in Network World, the entry-level job market in information technology (IT) “looks solid for 2012”. This is after a couple of years of drought in the IT job market. With emerging technologies it can only get better for the next few years.

She observes that traditionally, entry-level IT positions have involved customer service, such as help desk or desktop support. Job openings in these areas appear to be holding steady according to Marsan. Experts advise individuals interested in pursuing desktop support or field support positions should consider getting an entrylevel certification from CompTIA, such as A+ certification.

Students at South Kitsap High School (SKHS) can obtain their A+ Certification through a year-long

course. A+ Certification students use the school year to study and prepare for the two online tests to earn the certification. SKHS students in the class who maintain a grade of 88% or better for each trimester can take the certification tests at the school for no cost (SKHS is an approved testing site for the CompTIA tests).

Students with an interest in the IT industry should strongly consider having an edge on the employment competition by obtaining their A+ certification during their high school years at South Kitsap.

WBL: A Way to Make the Connection between School and the Workplace The “wow factor” in education occurs when students can make a connection between what they learn in the classroom and the “real” world – the workplace. Work Based Learning (WBL) offers students meaningful hands-on learning opportunities by connecting classroom learning with work experience. By combining work and classroom experiences students can improve their academic knowledge, strengthen work skills, and increase their understanding of the workplace.

WBL enhances a student’s employability and helps them maintain employment by developing and improving soft skills (ready and eager to learn, show respect, and take their job commitment seriously). Two different studies have

found that it is soft skills that seem to make the difference whether or not an employer hires and keeps someone on the job.

In addition students can earn high school credit for their part-time jobs with the possibility of earning college credit.

Students at South Kitsap School District are allowed the wonderful privilege of putting those words into action at their working farm, located on the campus of the high school.

High school and junior high students raise market hogs at the school farm. The hogs are raised from weaning weight, which is around 20-30 pounds, to market weight, which is 225-285 pounds.

The students, who are also FFA members, clean pens, check their hogs, train their hogs, and keep the fences in shape during the time leading up to the fairs. The culmination of their market hog projects is the showing of their hogs and auctioning them off at the Puyallup Junior Livestock Show in the spring and the Kitsap County Fair in August.

The Agriculture Department employs one farm manager who is responsible for feeding all of the market hogs, feeding the breeding sows and boars, keeping the electric fences in operation, helping with administering shots and wormers, and overseeing the Continued on next page

cleaning of the pens. Melanie Morgan, the current farm manager, is a senior at the high school and has been an FFA member for four years.

There are three breeding sows and two boars on the school farm.

Most of the market hogs that are raised at the farm come from the piglets that are farrowed right at the farm facilities. FFA members are called upon to check the pregnant sows every two hours during the night when farrowing

time gets close. The FFA advisors oversee student members during farrowing (birthing) as the piglets need to be wiped off, given iron shots, and have umbilical cords cut and tied off. There are not too many students throughout the state who are allowed this experience right on a high school campus.

Olympic College, and many of the other Washington community and technical colleges, is implementing the Career Pathways Roadmap Web Tool to provide “layers” of information that students need to know in order to plan their education and career. and perform a variety of animal science studies with the animals. This is a very unique opportunity for students. There are not very many public schools that allow students to follow the lives of livestock from conception all the way to market.

In addition to pigs and hogs at the school farm, students at times raise lambs for market projects.

There are also two Nigerian Dwarf goats at the farm that have the sole responsibility of keeping the brush down.

One of the highlights of the year at the Agriculture Department is AG Days for preschool students in the area. Every June, Denise Watson and the other Agriculture teachers have their classes put up some temporary pens outside of their classrooms that hold pigs, goats, and sheep. Local preschool children come to see livestock up close, learn how to milk a cow, hold a bunny, plant a seedling, hammer a nail, and various other activities.

There are several advantages to operating a working farm at a public school. The most obvious is that Embark on a new

students receive many experiences that they normally would not in school. Another opportunity that students have is to invest their money into an animal project and receive a return. Students learn record keeping skills, marketing, work ethics, and teamwork skills.

Students also love to go look at the animals, work with them, and show them off to their friends and family members.

lympic College recently received two grants related to the Aerospace industry: the Governor’s Investment in Aerospace (GIA) grant and the Air Washington Department of Labor grant. OC was awarded $102,000 as part of the $1 million Governor’s Investment in Aerospace grant to develop training and purchase equipment related to precision machining. The training related to the GIA grant must be completed

by June 30, 2012.

The Air Washington grant is designed to provide training in several aerospace industry sectors.

Olympic College’s portion is $2 million over three years to develop and offer training in Composites, Electronics and Advanced Manufacturing. All of the partners in this grant will share teaching materials and best practices.

Why is any of this important to residents of Kitsap and Mason counties? The Washington State aerospace industry accounts for 26.3% of manufacturing shipments in the state, and it needs well-trained employees skilled in the latest manufacturing materials, technologies and processes to work in five key industry clusters: Composite Manufacturing, Electronics, Industrial Manufacturing Technology, Machine Tool Technology and Aircraft/Airframe Mechanic.

Maintaining a strong manufacturing base in Washington State has been made a priority by the governor. It has also become apparent to the aerospace industry that their demand for skilled workers cannot only be met by the community and technical colleges along the I-5 corridor; they will need to draw welltrained workers from a broader base.

The Boeing Company, our state’s largest aerospace employer, has determined that 25% of their local skilled workforce is eligible for retirement, with an additional 25% becoming eligible for retirement in the next 5 years. Boeing’s many suppliers and other aerospace companies will also be facing the retirement of some of

their most experienced employees as baby boomers continue to leave the workforce. This loss of institutional knowledge will be difficult for all of the aerospace industry to overcome.

Transitioning new employees now, while that knowledge can be shared, is crucial. Boeing also wants to work with career and technical educators in K-12 to develop manufacturing career pathways through programs of study.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes production and professional jobs account for over half of all jobs in the aerospace industry; professional workers need a college degree, while most production workers need post-secondary technical training.

The proportion of workers with education beyond high school is larger in the aerospace industry than the average for all industries. As a result of the high skill level of workers, average earnings are higher than in most other industries. Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc. (EMSI) shows an average hourly wage of $19.57 for production occupations in Washington State, which is higher than the national average hourly wage of $16.85 for production workers.

EMSI shows 7,481 job openings in the Washington aerospace industry between 2011 and 2016, and 16,196 job openings between 2011 and 2021. These jobs will be in entrylevel Manufacturing, Functional Testing (another entry-level position), Composite Manufacturing, Electronics, Aircraft/Airframe Mechanic, Machine Tool Technology, Industrial Manufacturing Technology and in First-Line Supervisory areas.

Major educational goals in our state are (1) to wincrease the number of Washington students graduating ready for college/succeeding in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) degree programs and (2) to provide career pathways beginning at K-12 through to employment. Boeing would like to see more stackable certificate programs of one year or less, have the aerospace and advanced manufacturing pathways lead to baccalaureate degrees and modularized degree programs to pro-

vide multiple entry points for working adults. Governor Gregoire will also encourage more than 100 high school students to pursue engineering degrees through the Washington Aerospace Scholars program.

The community college system also likes the idea of creating shortterm certificates that are shared across multiple colleges, providing consistency in curriculum, and this would be achieved with some of the outcomes of the Air Washington grant. Olympic College has recently developed some new certificates that are 30 credits or less, focusing on Composites, Computer Numerical Control (CNC), and Machining.

Both industry and colleges would like to see more students and parents interested in production occupations and particularly, composites. Composite materials are lightweight, very strong and applicable to many different products and industries.

Since winter 2011, Olympic College has partnered with WorkSource, Kitsap Community Resources, the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, the Veteran’s Administration, the

Wounded Warrior Program, the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance, the Olympic Workforce Development Council and Profile Composites North America (PCNA, a non-profit organization), to develop and customize the composites curriculum and provide contracted training for veterans in Kitsap County. PCNA is a spinoff of Profile Composites in British Columbia, a research, development and manufacturing company that has won international awards for innovation in the composite industry and does research, development and training in advanced composite products in other many other areas, such as advanced composites for large vehicle components, car-top carriers, bridge components, aerospace, and marine specialty products.

PCNA is setting up a West Bremerton manufacturing facility that will produce a state-of-the-art, lightweight sport crutch made out of composite materials. This product will be created by disabled veterans and ideally will benefit disabled persons across the country.

High School Seniors Check Paws Printing: Giving Students Out “What’s Next?” at OC a Real-Life Experience O

n February 28th, nearly 200 local high school seniors will ponder “What’s Next?” as they tour the OC Bremerton campus. The inspiration for the campus-wide event came from the Career Educators/ Counselors within the West Sound Education Consortium (WSEC), a partnership comprised of six local school districts and Olympic College, along with Worksource of Kitsap County, all seeking a way to help students visualize continuing their education.

While on campus, students will have the opportunity to visit two professional-technical programs of interest. They will meet in small groups with the program faculty and possibly engage in a classroom activity.

From there, students will participate in a “What Employers Want!” forum, a panel where students will hear directly from employers tips for landing AND keeping a job. Additionally, they will learn how to navigate many of the student services that exist on campus including Advising, Counseling, Access Services, Career Center, Registration and Records, Cashiering, Financial Aid, Running Start, and Adult Basic Education.

While at OC, students will also receive a tour of the campus, experience lunch in the Bremer Student Center and hear from Associated Students of Olympic College (ASOC) on topics including life on campus, and financing your education.

Laura Hyde partners with the WSEC as an employee of the Pathways to Success Program offered in Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam Worksource Centers and through the Olympic Educational Service District 114. She says, “This is a wonderful event for students who are interested in college programs leading to higher paying jobs and learning what employers are looking for in an employee.” She adds, “This is a perfect example of the collaboration between the school districts, Olympic College, Worksource, and local employers to prepare today’s youth to meet expectations of our changing economy.”

Tech Prep is a program which enables students to earn college credit while enrolled in their high school Career and Technical Education classes, with the idea that students will be able to transition more smoothly into college professionaltechnical programs. Thompson said, “It is exciting to help students visualize a pathway beyond high school and give them some tools to start their journey to a career. This event makes that visualization even more real for the students.” Whether they continue their education at OC or not, she said it is fundamentally important to make the students feel more comfortable on a college campus and think about their future potential.

For the past year, SK teacher Mrs. Duttry has organized a small high school in-house print shop known as PAWs Printing. The need for some sort of printing service came about due to the previous district printing services department being discontinued. Eventually, Mrs. Duttry decided along with her Advanced Graphics and Graphic Tech students that they would be part of the solution. The PAWs Printing operation is highly beneficial to students because they can keep to their regular Graphic Arts curriculum while taking on the responsibilities of a small business and earning valuable experience working with members of the commu-

The print shop does everything from normal copying, to lamination, padding tablets, binding workbooks, printing the school newspaper, making vinyl banners, printing color posters, making menus or pamphlets, and essentially performing the same tasks that are standard at any Office Depot or FedEx Kinkos.

“It is a great experience to work with a team to create all types of different things you can be proud of. The program teaches flexibility when working with clients along with the patience and diligence to assure that they are getting exactly what they want,” said Miranda O’Sullivan, a junior in Mrs. Duttry’s graphics class and participant in the PAWs Printing service. The program has a very firm standing on quality control, and students who work in PAWs Printing learn how to both accurately quote prices for clients as well as assure that the particular client is fully satisfied.

The program is also remarkably efficient to the entire South Kitsap School Distirct, occasionally serving the district office’s printing and binding needs. All schools in the area have the option to use PAWs Printing for whatever sort of job they may need, which is quite convenient considering the local Office Depot has gone out of business.

“PAWs really gives you the confidence to be able to potentially work with several different machines in a field that requires printing and binding work,” explained Dominic Ada, junior, “It would be great to see

ech Prep is an opportunity for students to earn FREE college credit while enrolled in their Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes.

When CTE courses at the high school are aligned with similar college courses, and faculty agree that the core competencies match, an articulation agreement is signed. Students who take these articulated CTE courses can elect to register for Tech Prep credit. As they complete the class and earn a “B” or better, they will receive credits for the equivalent college course. This offers multiple benefits to the student.

Tech Prep CTE specifically has the advantage of offering a “hands-on” educational approach in lieu of more traditional methods of teaching and learning. By connecting the working world with the learning experience,

students can better visualize the value of the course content for future use. Individual interests and abilities are used to help identify appropriate career pathways. This, in turn, increases career and occupational awareness and readiness, prior to the student leaving the K-12 system.

Aside from gaining occupational skills and related work experience, students may be able to earn industry certifications and choose to enter the workforce directly after school. Tech Prep Saves Parents’ Money Higher education is needed for success in the workplace, but costs for higher education are on the rise.

In light of the current economic recession, families need to consider opportunities for savings. Students participating in Tech Prep have an opportunity to save significant

amounts of time and money on their post-secondary education. On average, students enrolled in Tech Prep will earn six college credits. Based on 2010-2011 tuition rates, this equates with a total savings over $500 to the average student. The State of Washington also enjoys the cost-cutting benefits of Tech Prep. he Mohawk-in-Chop catapult beats all-time records by 50 feet in an annual pumpkin tossing competition held at Hunter Farms in Union, WA. West Sound Technical Skills Center (WST) Construction Trades program built a catapult called the Mohawkin-Chop. It took the class 2 weeks to construct the catapult. On the 29th of October, WST competed against Shelton High School. Other groups that participated were Hunter Farms personnel combined with local fire fighters and an unlimited group.

Judging was broken into three categories: distance, artistic design

and accuracy. WST won for its AXE design and by throwing the longest distance of 251 feet, beating all the old distance records by 50 feet. The prize awarded was $400.00 and 290 2x4s (a unit of lumber) donated by Simpson Lumber, Hunter Farms and Roxy radio station.

A Cosmetology Education in High School

T

he Cosmetology program at West Sound Technical Skills Center provides an opportunity for students to master the skills and abilities necessary to succeed in the beauty industry through hands-on activities and direct client services. Students study theory and practical skills essential in the Cosmetology industry which cover a wide range of subjects from the composition of hair and skin, to customer service and business skills. This introduction to Cosmetology will build a foundation that can jump start an exciting career.

In addition to developing essential job skills, West Sound Technical Skills Center and Olympic College have partnered together to give high school students the opportunity to earn college credits. The credits and hours will apply toward their requirements for state licensing. Additional training beyond high school hours is required. Students have an opportunity to take practical classes that will introduce them to the careers that interest them the most.

Learning people skills is a vital part of any career. In the Cosmetology program students will practice communication, customer service and practical skills that will carry throughout their lives. Gaining knowledge and skills in the Cosmetology field allows students to express themselves creatively. Students participate and create partnerships in community events such as: • The Miss Kitsap, Miss Poulsbo and Miss Silverdale Beauty Pageant, where the Cosmetology students go to the pageant and do the hair styling for the contestants.

• The American Cancer Society, the school donates wigs to cancer patients and students participate in styling the wigs.

• A spring hair and fashion show at West Sound Tech, designed by the students and open to the public.

Students from surrounding high schools are offered special discounts for prom and other special occasion hairstyling.

• Mothers of children with developmental disabilities, that are members of ARC (an agency serving families living with developmental disabilities), are offered a day of beauty by the Cosmetology students.

• GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science), where girls in the community went to Olympic College to explore math and science. The girls were offered salon services by the West Sound Tech Cosmetology students, who explained why math and science are important in the Cosmetology Industry.

By contributing to the community in a positive way, the students can gain a sense of accomplishment knowing they have made a difference in someone’s life. It also shows future employers they are trustworthy, reliable and responsible.

In the educational Salon, a program that operates under an agreement between Olympic College and the West Sound Technical Skills Center, students work under the supervision of Licensed Cosmetology Instructors to offer a full menu of salon services. The salon is open to the public with affordable prices.

Clients will receive exceptional customer service and quality results. The college portion of the program is designed to allow students to complete all of the required instruction to qualify for the Washington State Cosmetology License examination and at the same time earn an Associate in Technical Arts Degree at Olympic College.

Fostering Early Educators

I

s teaching really for me? That’s the first question that the high school students attending West Sound Technical Skills Center Early Childhood Education (ECE) class are asked to reflect on. The students have enrolled in this course of study primarily because of their interest in working with young children in some capacity.

The Early Childhood Education class curriculum, taught by instructor Lynda Griffin, includes theory, state licensing regulations and hands on practicum experience in a variety of licensed childcare centers and Head Start classrooms in the Bremerton School District. The students learn how to write and teach lesson plans, apply positive discipline techniques, health, safety, nutrition and other developmentally appropriate practices.

Students are also taught employability skills including effective communication,

leadership, teamwork, time management and work place ethics. ECE students develop professional portfolios showcasing their work, certifications and experience earned throughout the school year.

Certifications for employees working in a licensed childcare center in the state of Washington include CPR/1st Aid, Food Handlers Certification, Blood Bourne Pathogen Training, and a 20 hour basic STARS training. Students earn all these certifications in Ms. Griffin’s ECE class.

Many students who complete the program are hired at the centers at which they had their practicum experiences.

Directors and teachers are impressed with the students’ knowledge, certifications, and experience and employability skills.

When students are asked what they enjoy most about the ECE class, they often say “it’s all about the children!”

They enjoy bonding with the children, watching them grow, learn, bloom and being a part of their learning process.

As one student put it “I look forward to seeing their faces light up when they see me walk into the classroom and knowing that I am helping these children to grow, socially, emotionally and educationally is just icing on the cake!”

Culinary Arts at West Sound Technical Skills Center

By Jacque Palacio C ulinary Arts is a two year program offered at West Sound Technical Skills Center which teaches students to cook, bake, serve, host, and provides direct work experience in our onsite deli and restaurant.

The student’s first year is dedicated to learning the basics of food handling plus other techniques they will use in the kitchen. Their second year is spent perfecting these techniques and focusing on developing their leadership skills. All students, first and second years, have the opportunity to participate in Skills USA, a national nonprofit organization which prepares high school and college students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

During their two years at West Sound Tech students participate in various enriching experiences. They take field trips to the Seattle area to learn about local culinary schools, check out new food flavors and trends, and investigate the latest career opportunities in the culinary arts industry. Students are also able to attend monthly chef meetings sponsored by the Washington

State Chef’s Association, part of the American Culinary Federation.

Students stay abreast of new food trends, equipment, and careers.

Located onsite at West Sound Technical Skills Center is the student run Three Seasons restaurant and deli. Students enrolled in the program get the opportunity to work in these establishments; they are taught and become proficient at customer service, following rules for food safety and sanitation, maintaining interpersonal relationships, and handling financial transactions. All food items sold in the restaurant and deli are made by the students, enabling them to experiment, practice, and receive immediate feedback from customers.

All students in the Culinary Arts class are invited to participate in Skills USA. This program allows students to show off the skills they have practiced, travel, meet interesting people, build leadership skills, and strengthen and develop good work ethics. The students are able to compete locally and nationally in three areas: Commercial Baking, Culinary Arts, and Food & Beverage Service.

Last year, Shalbe Welsh, a junior in the program, received a gold medal in

Culinary Arts student Lindsey Wilkinson State Level competition for her excellence in the Food & Beverage Service.
