That Friendly Face at the dealership By Brennan K. Purtzer, Publisher, Courier Herald Newspapers Any car dealer will offer you a smile, but what do they offer beyond that? Here in our backyard, you’ll find that we’re very lucky to have honest dealers on every corner. Our Automotive guide is my favorite feature all year, probably because I’m a real car guy. As I conducted last year’s feature, I inevitably ended up buying a car a Honda Insight Hybrid from the Denny Lee at Jay Lee’s Honda of Sumner.

2012 Car & Truck Guide

This year, I’m happy to report that, after putting 23,000 miles on the car (several trips to visit my grandparents in Oregon), this vehicle has saved me a full $2,000 on fuel over a regular vehicle (23mpg)! That roughly equates to 6.5 of the 12 monthly payments I’ve had to make. Buying a new or used car is a need we all share from time to time, so I consider myself quite lucky to be surrounded by such knowledgeable experts from every brand of automobile. Please enjoy these profiles, and don’t hesitate to contact these professionals. Like you and me, they all have an interesting story to tell.

Ryan Sawyer: Steady-rockin’ family man Kia of Puyallup

Joe Corrado: Not your average Luxury GM Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo of Tacoma By Brennan Purtzer

By Brennan Purtzer There was a moment, twenty years ago, when Kia of Puyallup General Manager Ryan Sawyer considered a career in the music industry. Clearly, he decided against it, and his decision has paid off immensely. “I wanted to go into the business side of it,” he said. “To work for a record label.” Since the moment he made his decision, the music industry has seen nothing but declining profits, and instead, the Kia brand he was worked at since 1997 has seen nothing but growth. “I admit, I’m not a car guy,” he said. “But I really enjoy helping people.” Sawyer, a Federal Way High School grad (CO ’92), has been married to his wife, Liz, for 12 years. The couple has two boys together and a gray, stripped tabby named “Tails.” Sawyer loves living in the northwest for all the opportunities its natural setting provides. He occasionally enjoys taking his family on nearby hiking and camping trips. In addition, he enjoys watch-

ing his son play youth sports, and taking him to cheer on the Washington Huskies Football team. But still, those trips don’t keep Sawyer’s mind from wandering further. Since he was a child, he has dreamed of visiting Australia. When he was younger, he backpacked across Europe for a month, stopping in England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Italy and Holland. But here at home, probably his deepest vice is his affection for a hair band: Def Leppard. “It’s just something I’ve never been able to outgrow,” he said. “It’s a little embarrassing.” Sawyer and his family attend Marine View Presbyterian Church in NE Tacoma, and Kia of Puyallup supports the Puyallup Santa Cops and the Breast Cancer Resource Center. At his work for Kia, he says the thing he loves about going to works is the opportunity to change people’s perceptions of what a car dealer is. “This business gets a bad rap sometimes, so it’s fun to be the exception to that rule.”

Most auto dealers would hesitate to tell you their fine, luxury vehicles aren’t their favorite mode of transportation. But Joe Corrado isn’t most dealers. This proud Giant Schnauzer owner gets excited talking about taking his 2003 Harley Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Road King on runs down to San Jose. “I’ve gone down to Mt. St. Helens, Winthrop and out past Enumclaw too,” he said. He even named his dog Harley. But behind the work desk, Corrado enjoys taking an active role at his Fife Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo dealerships. “I really like working with customers and actually putting deals together. I’m a hands-on GM,” he said. Corrado, who has worked in the industry since taking his first “summer job” at Vista (now Jet) Chevrolet in 1981, took his first General Manger’s job in 1996, and has worked with former Seahawks DB Mike O’Brien’s Auto Group for the

last four years. “I’ve never worked for a more sound auto group,” said Corrado. “Mike takes care of his customers and gives his GM’s a lot of freedom – it’s almost like the dealership is my own.” Corrado thoroughly enjoys being dad to his two children, Melina (18), and Aidan (16). Together Joe and Aidan explore rock culture, attending AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Ozzie Osbourne, and Rush shows in recent years. Corrado was impressed when Aidan was inspired to grow his lush, curly hair out a full 13”, and have it cut off as a donation to the Locks of Love program for disadvantaged children. Charitable action runs in the family, as Corrado’s dealership routinely supports great causes, with notable recipients such as the Carol Milgard Breast Center and the Tacoma Museum of Glass. Asked what other industry he could see himself working in, Corrado chuckled to recall the college major he left behind when he chose to pursue the automotive industry: law. Working as a corporate litigator is a far cry from life today for this former Karate Champ. Corrado reflects on the path he took to success, “the break I took after two years of school ... this is definitely the longest summer job I ever had.”

Rover manages to look as at home dropping celebrities onto red carpets as it does traversing the Kalahari with weeks worth of consumables strapped to the roof. How they have managed to pull off such a feat largely remains a mystery that has driven

marketing professors mad for years and kept the competition guessing for equally long, but it does ensure one thing – each successive Range Rover design is more impressive than the last, both in staggering off-road confidence and opulent luxury.

Matt Welch: Family man with ideas Owner, GM, Auburn Volkswagen

2012 VW Passat By Alison Lakin

By Brennan Purtzer It sounds cliché, but Matt really means it when he says his passion is “making lives better, one VW at a time.” Sure, it’s the company line, but spend 5 minutes with Matt, and you’ll see how sincere he is. Welch is so passionate about his VWs that he and his new wife of one year, Amy, drove their new fuel efficient VW Passat TDI all the way to San Francisco on one tank of gas – just to prove it could be done. As a devout follower of Jesus, Welch can be forgiven for his pride when he beams about the 98 percent attendance he had recently at his company Christmas party, treating his employees last December at the Columbia Tower. He also speaks with humility about the active VW enthusiast community that turned out 300 people for the BBQ at his dealership last summer, and at 5,000 people at Cheney Stadium for an annual weekend event known as Waterwerks. At home, Welch is all-dad, all the time. He takes pride in passing his

love of sports on to Jacob Christian, 5, and enjoying musicals with his daughter Isabel Grace, 6. When he’s not running one of the top 2 VW Washington dealerships in both new and used vehicles, Welch philosophizes about world peace. He meets regularly with an association of concerned parties, specifically dedicated to igniting world peace through the principles of Jesus Christ of Nazareth as a bridge to all people. In the community, Welch loves giving back, and supports organizations such as his local Rotary, Life Center Church in Tacoma, Tacoma Rescue Mission, the East Side Domestic Violence Program, and the Auburn Food Bank. A Tacoma resident, Welch Said, “I love the community in Tacoma. The leadership in Tacoma really cares for each other. They help each other; they’re always looking for ways to improve the city life experience.”

Volkswagen is looking to make a statement with the 2012 Passat. Its complete overhaul has seen the Passat grow four inches in length, offer more features, and – perhaps most importantly – drop thousands in price to a sub-$20,000 starting MSRP. New to the Passat as well is a segment-first turbo-diesel engine (TDI), which returns 43 mpg highway and is offered alongside 2.5-liter and V-6 engines. While the engineering is all German, this Passat is the first to be built at Volkswagen’s new Chattanooga, Tennessee plant.

And the automaker took particular steps to create a Volkswagen specific to the American buyer. Europe’s Passat is nearly entirely different; our Passat has more room and a unique look. All of this seems to herald the start of a different direction for Volkswagen. What’s to Like Leg- and headroom in the rear is spacious and accommodates most passengers comfortably. The addition of a TDI engine is great for those who may not want a hybrid but are concerned with fuel economy. The trunk is cavernous, and the touchscreen interface is fantastically easy to use and intuitive. Pricing is on par with the rest of the segment. Three years or 36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance sweetens the pot.

2012 VW Beetle By Alison Lakin

The Beetle is one of the most iconic cars in American history, and its original production run was impressive – from 1938 to 2003. It sold well, but an update after ‘98 has been long overdue. And VW certainly delivered a new Beetle (the ‘New’ in the name has thankfully been dropped); one whose body lines edge it into more masculine territory, whose engines are more efficient, and whose roof-

line is less bubbly. Volkswagen has created a car that manages to toe the line between retro reproduction and modern compact by integrating more styling cues from the original Beetle and filling the cabin – and engine bay – with updated technology. The lineup will consist of the standard Beetle, a Turbo version with an extra 30 hp, and a TDI clean diesel slated to arrive in 2012. Get ready Beetle fans: there’s a bug here for everyone. What’s to Like The new styling is more approachable and acceptable for a wider audience now. A streamlined interior look and integrated information centers de-clutter the cabin. Variety in the lineup means that buyers will have a range of engine choices.

Ford dealers show concern for women of the community By Kevin Hanson Free breast ultrasound examinations were recently provided to women of the area, thanks in part to the support of Ford dealerships in Enumclaw and Sumner. The Ford Motor Company Fund and mobile testing provider HealthFair made it easy for women to be tested, thanks to a state-of-the-art bus that rolled throughout the Pacific Northwest during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In Enumclaw, where the “breast

bus” set up shop in the Safeway parking lot, the screenings cane courtesy of Fugate Ford. In Sumner, where the bus saw women in the Fred Meyer lot, the effort was due to the sponsorship of Riverside Ford. Staff on board said more than two dozen women could receive topnotch service per day. Word of the free service spread far and wide, with some woman driving hours to take advantage of the ultrasound screening.

Kahne plans to keep momentum By Brenda Sexton

When the NASCAR Sprint Cup season concluded in November, Kasey Kahne was riding a wave of success. The Enumclaw driver made the most of his onetime run behind the wheel of Red Bull Racing Team’s No. 4 Red Bull Toyota by earning his 12th career win in 287 NASCAR Sprint Cup races Nov. 13 in Phoenix. It was his first win since September 2009. His season-ending seventh-place finish at Homestead Miami was his 15th Top 10 finish of the season. So when the green flag falls on the 2012 season with the Budweiser Shootout at 5 p.m. Feb. 18, followed by the Gatorade Duels Feb. 23 and the Daytona 500 Feb. 26, all at Daytona International Speedway, he’s hoping to continue that momentum. “I can’t wait to get started,” Kahne said during a recent phone interview. “It seems like it’s been a long time. As well as we finished last year, I didn’t want it to end.” For Kahne, the off-season has been focused. “It’s been all about racing, getting ready,” Kahne said. Like Kahne, Plateau fans will have to adapt to some changes in 2012. Kahne will be driving the No. 5 Chevrolet Farmers Insurance car for Hendrick Motorsports, one of NASCAR’s premier teams. His stable mates are the biggest names in the business – five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon and racing superstar Dale Earnhart Jr. “It’s exciting to be able to work with those guys,” Kahne said talking about their experience. Gary Gustafson: A heart for animals GM, Mike Scarff Subaru (Auburn) By Brennan Purtzer

You wouldn’t know it from his mild demeanor, but Scarff Subaru General Manager/Owner Gary Gustafson has a true passion for helping animals. Gustafson and his fiancee Megan have two kids and three dogs, and dedicate their time to bringing smiles. A born and bred Milton-Fife native, when he isn’t running his Auburn Subaru dealership, he’s sometimes donating his time and fuel to fly missions on his private Piper Cherokee, saving animals from kill-shelters where there is no space for them – taking them to safe shelters where they can be adopted. When there aren’t any animals to save, Gustafson dons his daddy-hero suit and flies his daughter, Taylor (15) across the country to compete in national speed-skating competitions. Gustafson got into the car business straight out of high school. After graduating from Fife High in 1991, he went to work for Mike Scarff. Passionate about cars and a race car driver in high school, it was a natural fit for Gustafson; he never left. After starting as a service technician and adviser, he became a service manager before moving into sales. He kept growing in his roles, and by 2006, he earned a chance to become an owner in the Scarff franchise. Today, the business is healthy, and Gustafson couldn’t be any happier. “We bought the right brand at the right price,” he said. “People really like our bottom line pricing.” In his free time, Gary still enjoys NASCAR racing, and donates his time rescuing animals through a website called Pilots N Paws. Gary also supports his local Special Olympians, and high school athletes several times each year.

2012 Subaru Outback By Jon Alain Guzik DriverSide Overview With an all-new interior and a similarly reconstructed exterior, the car has a bold face to help fend off the ever-rising tide of crossovers and CUVs. The redesign is certainly memorable and provides more space in just about every direction. 2012 Outback has proven itself with the EPA – delivering close to 30 mpg when equipped with a CVT. That’s nothing to sneeze at, especially in a vehicle with the Outback’s hauling capacity. A new, multi-link suspension in the rear provides a stable driving platform despite a higher ride height than more lowslung sedans, too. What’s to Like While the available 3.6-liter six-cylinder has more than enough power, and all models feel great at highway speeds. Passenger space has been greatly improved, and the CVT returns fantastic numbers at the pump.

The Drive: DriverSide Driving Impressions The Outback, we are convinced, can go almost anywhere, at any time. While the Outback isn’t made for off-roading like a more traditional SUV or crossover, up a hill or through a stream it goes. While the 170 horsepower, H-4 is just adequate – we don’t think a Subaru buyer will ever question the lack of power – we wish there was a little more oomph to ride. That said, the H-6 gives you all the power you’ll need.

2012 Subaru Legacy By Jon Alain Guzik Overview In the mid-sized sedan game, the Subaru Legacy is something special. Whereas titans like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are happy to offer customers living in sunny climates the joy of a fuelefficient, front-wheel drive car, Subaru serves up an inexpensive sedan with an all-wheel drive system that can take on the worst nature has to offer. The new Legacy boasts up to 31 mpg on the highway when equipped with the CVT, meaning the surefooted-ness of all-wheel drive and solid numbers at the pump are no longer mutually exclusive. What’s to Like Great fuel economy for an AWD car and a variety of trim levels make sure there’s enough power on tap for everyone.

The Drive: The Legacy never feels overmatched, even in its base naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder 2.5i trim. We liked the CVT transmission on this model best, as the shifts occur, if you play with it, close to the redline. The turbocharged 2.5GT version seems like a car for the aging WRX buyer who needs a sedan rather than a hot hatch.

Risa Radcliffe: Helpful hometown gal

2012 Chrysler 300-Series By Josh Sadlier

Service Adviser, Enumclaw Chrysler Jeep, Dodge By Brennan Purtzer

Sometimes Risa R adc lif fe has to be the bearer of bad news. The cheery young service adviser at Enumclaw Chrysler Jeep Dodge does her best to put it in the best light. “I try to make them more comfortable, I get to know my customers on a personal level,” she said. A fixture at ECJD since 2002, Radcliffe’s relationships aren’t like the temporary ones sometimes formed in the sales department - she routinely serves Chrysler owners for multiple years, with several different concerns and even different vehicles. “I enjoy the people I work with, we’re like a big family with a homey atmosphere.” When she’s not working, Rad-

cliffe has many hobbies to keep her busy. She enjoys painting and takes a watercolors class at Arts Alive. For years she has enjoyed drawing and acrylic arts. As a homeowner, she maintains her home – sometimes with a little help from her father. During the summer months she is an avid golfer, though rather than track her strokes, she measures success by losing the least number of balls. She chose to make her home in Enumclaw because it is the city she was raised in, and family is close by. Along with her meantempered long-haired calico cat named “Alley,” she and her boyfriend just acquired an 11-weekold corgi named “Cody.” Radcliffe received a kindle for Christmas, and has averaged a book a week since, her favorites being thrillers by James Patterson. Along with her work with Arts Alive!, she has also helped in projects by Stage Door Productions (including painting the set for “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat”).

Overview Hear this, sedan fans: the reinvented 2012 Chrysler 300 is nothing short of a revelation. It’s a full-size, rear-drive, stylish, luxurious, high-tech, urbane four-door that starts well equipped at about $28,000, or roughly the same as a Honda Accord V6. We’re flummoxed, and we imagine rival automakers are as well. Chrysler has worked a minor miracle here. Not that the old 300 was a bad car; in fact, it was pretty satisfying in its day. The new 300, however, is satisfying, period. Hear this: Chrysler’s on the comeback trail, and the 2012 Chrysler 300 is leading the charge. What’s to Like The 300 works because it’s a happy marriage of the best from America and Germany. Big, brawny (in 300C trim), in-your-face stylish – that’s the American part. Refined, composed, tech-savvy – there’s the German influence. Chrysler was

controlled by Daimler Benz for a spell, remember, and the 300’s underpinnings continue to carry traces of E-Class DNA. Add Chrysler’s American sensibility to the mix, as well as real financial support (finally) courtesy of new owner Fiat, and you’ve got yourself a winner. The Drive: Driving Impressions The rear-wheel drive 300 basically rides like a big German luxury car. You don’t float over bumps, but you don’t feel them as harsh impacts, either. There’s a controlled, athletic character here that persists in spirited cornering, where the 300 feels surprisingly well-sorted given that its primary purpose is to devour highway miles.

Rocky Matranga: An Artist Behind the Desk

www.courierherald.com

2012 MINI Clubman By Raleigh Purtzer

Sales specialist, NORTHWEST MINI of Tacoma

Rocky Matranga, Left, with Ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro in 2011. By Brennan Purtzer If it wasn’t for the passion he felt for Mini’s world-class products, it might be hard to keep Rocky Matranga behind a desk. “BMW has inspired products made by an inspired company,” he said. “It’s what happens when you combine creativity with world class engineering together with fun!” Matranga has been selling Mini’s since 2008, and BMWengineered products since 2003 – but that doesn’t mean he’s sacrificed his hobbies.

Nearly every week, you’ll find him in Lakewood playing his Ukulele at a loose gathering of enthusiasts called the Monday Ukulele Ohana. Last year, they arranged an audience with Hawaiian legends Jake Shimabukuro and hosted clinics with legends Aldrine Guerrero & Herb Ohta Jr. Matranga shares his home with two cats, “Willie,” a tabby, and “Anabelle,” a blue-gray. He calls his one sister, who lives in Groveland, Florida, the “greatest sister in the world.” Originally from Sacramento, Calif. he moved up here after completing an art degree at San Francisco State, falling in love with the lifestyle of the Northwest. Another talent of Matranga’s is painting. A fan of pastels, acrylic and oil, and even watercolors, he has obvious talent. Like his love of Ukuleles, his imagination takes him off to the islands, which are a frequent subject in his catalog of works. Stop by soon, and he’ll be glad to show you some of his fine arts, and fine MINIs!

and out. The Clubman still retains the ride and handling of its smaller siblings.

Anyone who has seen the Iconic Mini Cooper about town has probably had a reaction to its size. Now that everything on the road is super-sized, the Mini Clubman is a nice, simple Medium. The Mini is a small car, and I should know, I own one.The Clubman is new to me.The Clubman is a new tweak on the classic style, which seems like blasphemy, but this is an homage. With extra storage capacity, it is clearly larger, but keeps all of the Mini attitude. What’s to Like The Clubman model gives you a few inches where they are needed most in a Mini - back seat legroom. The original Mini is only good for quick trips when the front seat occupants are on the tallish side. The Clubman encourages bringing friends in on the ride, so much that Mini gave it an extra door. The side door and its 10 extra inches of space work wonders for getting in

Engine and Drivetrain The engine options are all based off a 1.6L 4-cylinder. The base model is good for 118 hp, and the Clubman S adds a turbocharger to get the total up to 181 hp. Ticking off the John Cooper Works box will add another 27 hp, at some additional expense. The Mini Clubman gets great gas mileage allowing 35/27/30 economy for both the base and S models, which begs the question: why not opt for the S? Market Segment and Pricing At $21,900 for the entry model with no options, this is a little pricey for a fuel-economy car, but this is not just an economy car. This is an outward expression that style and performance are very important. Alternative cars either cost more or offer lower performance. The Mazdaspeed3 ($23,700) is an amazing bargain for the speed addicts, but can’t sip the gas like the Mini. The Prius ($24,000) is an obvious choice for commuters, but does not have the sporty feel of the Clubman, or the power of the Clubman S. This car hits the sweet spot between performance and economy.

Aaron Mayer: Fugate’s Master of Disguise Sales consultant, Fugate Ford

By Brennan Purtzer Courier-Herald readers know him from advertisements featuring him as Superman, Elvis, Frankenstein and even the Grim Reaper. But 8-year veteran Fugate Ford sales consultant Aaron Mayer says he’s more proud of his su-

per-human skills to save his customers money. “My favorite part are the friendships I build. I make new friends and take care of them,” Mayer said. Case in point, Mayer is coming off a banner month of a personal-record 22 sales in December, and cites that 18 of them were from referrals or return

customers. In the auto industry, that’s a huge measure of success. “When I got into this industry, they told me, ‘it’s not a one year or two year or a three year job. Stick with it, and your work will begin to pay off,’” Mayer said.

2012 Honda Accord EX-L By Alison Lakin

Jeff Douglas: Pearl Jam fan and a family man

By Brennan Purtzer As a young man, Jay Lee’s Honda Master Technician Jeff Douglas’ favorite memory was stage diving at a Pearl Jam concert in Seattle. “I must have seen them 10 or 12 times,” he said. “I love their sound.” Today, slightly older, he shares his favorite band with his teenage daughters. Douglas got his start as an automotive tech at Renton Honda soon after graduating from Juanita High School in Kirkland in 1994. After attending professional automotive career training at Shoreline College, he became a master technician. Then, along with several of his Jay Lee’s co-workers, he jumped at the opportunity to come and work at the new Honda dealership that opened in Sumner, in 2009; he’s never regretted it. Neither has his boss, Jay Lee. In a six-month, 2011 survey, Douglas was an outstanding performer in the “fix right, first visit” campaign, receiving a full 100% score for his work. Despite only being in his mid-30’s, Douglas is a leader among his peers. “It’s fun teaching the younger guys,” he said. “This job isn’t like a job, it’s more like a hobby. Maybe after 20 years I’d like to be a shop foreman.” Regarding his employer, Douglas couldn’t be happier. “Jay, as an owner … you wouldn’t know he’s an owner. He’s fun and he treats you like his family,” he said. “One day he took me out to dinner at Farelli’s, and then bought a pizza for me to take back home to my wife – such an easy going, generous guy.” When he’s not at work, scoring 100% on customer satisfaction surveys, Douglas enjoys playing dad and Golfing with his wife of 1.5 years, Martes, and rooting for the Huskies. Stop in and see him some time!

Senior Technician, Jay Lee’s Honda of Sumner

Honda’s Accord remains one of the mid-size standouts for 2012. Why? Because we actually enjoy the way it drives. The Accord sedan is agile and grounded – not unlike many sport sedans on the market. What’s to Like The Accord is one of the few cars in this class and price range to deliver solid drive characteristics. The V-6 engine provides on-tap acceleration and a good amount of power. With this topof-the-line model, everything comes standard. Passengers will experience

some seriously roomy rear seats, and cargo space is plentiful as well. Driving position is ergonomic for a range of driver sizes. Driving Impressions The highlight of the Accord is its onroad demeanor, and that holds true for the V-6 model as well. The sedan is predictable and sure-footed, even on twisty roads, and never feels unwieldy. The suspension doesn’t liquefy the ride too much either; there’s plenty of support around corners, but the sedan still manages to stay comfortable over bumps city streets. It’s a balance that many other sedans can’t seem to mimic. The V-6 offers considerable power, as well as quick acceleration off the line and at speed. Still, the cabin is quiet – additional noise reduction efforts are standard on this trim – and seating is comfortable for all.

Joe Stephens: Solid Tech Experience Senior Technician, Toyota of Puyallup

www.courierherald.com

2012 Toyota Prius V By Alison Lakin trick – the Prius V has a ton of cargo space (almost 30 more cubic feet of space over the Prius), plus under-floor storage as well. There are plenty of cubby spaces throughout the cabin and five cup holders in the front alone! Visibility is better, and so are the driving dynamics. A standard touchscreen houses a backup camera too.

By Brennan Purtzer

A lot can happen in 36 years. Just ask Senior Toyota of Puyallup Technician Joe Stephens. You can raise a family, advance in your career, go salmon fishing about 50 times, and you can watch the upstart Japanese Auto manufacturer you took a chance with become the number one auto maker in the world. All three of these happened for him. Today, Stephens is a married man (Tammy, 9 years), with five children (3 girls, 2 boys), and one Chocolate lab named “Max.” His oldest boy, Ryan, works at Lockheed Martin, and is a former Marine. What Joe likes best about his work is the variety he can expect. “Every day is a different day,” he said. “My pleasure is in correctly identifying and addressing the needs of each customer until they are satisfied.” Stephens is a Harley rider, and has taken trips out East to the Tri-cities area in the summer. He started riding Harleys after a lifetime of motorcycle racing and dirt biking, a hobby he only gave up in the last five years. He passed his love of dirt biking onto his children, buying them their own bikes when they were young, and bringing them on family dirt biking trips. While his daughter was playing fastpitch, Joe coached girls youth baseball for four years. Though he once restored a black, 1964 Chevelle to showroom beauty, his hobby at home is woodworking and carpentry. Ever since wood shop in high school, Stephens has enjoyed working with his hands and refinishing antique furniture. Stephens and his family are members of the Calvary Church in Sumner. He is a cancer survivor, and also former Elks and Eagles member.

In just 10 years, the Prius has gone from misfit to beloved hybrid, and our love affair with the little Toyota has resulted in well over one million Prius purchases, most of which are still on the road today. But the Prius isn’t perfect, and its compact shape has meant that some buyers just can’t fit everything – and everyone – inside. That’s the business case behind the 2012 Prius V (‘V’ stands for versatility), the first addition to the extended Prius family. Essentially, it’s a bigger Prius. There’s more cargo space, more room for passengers, and more technology. The Prius V uses the same gas/electric hybrid system that the third-generation Prius uses, achieving 42 mpg combined, and it offers up a slew of information and entertainment options, including Entune – a way to use phone apps through your car’s standard touchscreen system. But what the Prius V really does best is go after the compact SUVs and wagons currently on the market. Its 67.3 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down beats that of the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Hyundai Tucson, and it’s nearly identical to the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI’s and the Ford Escape Hybrid’s. The Prius V may not outstrip the competition in a drag race, but it might well change the way we think about the necessity of bigger cars on the road. What’s to Like Making the Prius larger has done the

The Drive: Driving Impressions The Prius is hardly a racecar, but modifications included in the Prius V make for a smoother ride overall. There’s less pitch and roll – or “porpoising” as Toyota calls it, so the ride feels more level over bumpy roads. Surprisingly, there’s a good amount (perhaps too much) of road feel, which makes for a less floaty ride and helps it feel more secure in corners. With a bigger car comes more glass, and visibility is indeed fantastic. There are few blind spots and the front windshield offers up a wide view of the road. A number of different drive modes give you a wide range of efficiency options. Power gives you more on-demand acceleration to help add some spirit to the drive – though you can also access full power by simply flooring the throttle. Eco and EV mode employ a variety of techniques to reduce consumption if you feel like being an eco-warrior. Engine and Drivetrain Using the same hybrid system found in the Prius and other Toyota hybrid models, the Prius V’s 1.8-liter engine and electric motor combine to achieve 134 horsepower. Regenerative brakes utilize stopping power to recharge the battery for longer battery usage. You’ll be able to monitor engine and battery input through a large and clear display in the central screen.

2012 Lincoln MKZ By Alison Lakin

Ever had a friend ask if you noticed something different about them? Ever embarrassingly draw a blank? That tends to happen when cars go through a mid-cycle refresh, as the manufacturers like to call it; a few tweaks here and there to update it, sometimes only seen by the discerning eye. Lincoln didn’t get the memo though, and ended up modify-

ing so many elements of the 2010 MKZ – their entry-level luxury sedan – that you’d have to be legally blind not to notice. Less has been done with what’s under the hood than the overall design of the car, but almost every component that involves driver interaction has been put through the ringer. The outdated look of the exterior has been wiped clean and replaced with a more modern design, complete with the now signature Joker face grille. The transmission includes a standard manual mode now, and there are plenty of technology add-ons from safety systems to a melodi-

ous surround-sound audio system. However, the wow factor is all about the interior. The ‘after’ shot features materials of better quality, surprisingly comfortable and roomy seats, a whisper-quiet cabin and a dramatically altered instrument panel. We still see too many Ford vehicle components in the interior than we’d expect in a more upscale car, but the transformation of the MKZ is undeniably recognizable. What’s to Like: A sport package adds much-needed drivability to the MKZ, though the base model will be fine for those wanting their ride to glide over the road. Wind noise reduction is outstanding and the V-6 has been tuned to sound throat-

ier when punched. According to Lincoln, they’ve also shaved 0.6 seconds off its 0-60 mph time. It feels like it too. The Drive: DriverSide Driving Impressions A major requirement of the entry-level luxury segment is to feel at ease behind the wheel and for the most part, Lincoln delivers on that sense of drivability. The 3.5-liter V-6 emits a nice engine note when the throttle is really pushed, and quiets down when a relaxed driving style is sought. Delivering power to the front wheels provides less control out of turns than we’d like and if that bothers you, we’d recommend all-wheel drive.

Steve Murchie: Top sales rep by day, dream aviator by night Sales leader, Korum Hyundai By Brennan Purtzer When Korum Hyundai Sales Rep Steve Murchie comes home, he puts himself in another world: the world of the virtual aviator. He flies flight simulators such as Microsoft’s FSX software. When he has a chance to catch some entertainment, his favorite events are the air shows. His passion for aviation came from ten years as a Navy electrician, based in San Diego. Afterward Murchie, originally from Niagra Falls, moved up the coast to run an auto sales group

in Coos Bay, Oregon, and eventually to Washington. “I’ve always wanted to live here, it’s the most beautiful place on earth,” Murchie said. He takes advantage of the natural resources offered in the Northwest, mountain biking, hiking, listening to smooth jazz and even panning for gold. “When you find just a couple of flakes, it’s very exciting,” he said. “You have $30 to $40 in your hand!” Through his work, he enjoys the personal contacts he makes as a sales rep. “It gives me a window into

people’s lives… how many surgeries they’ve had, how many pizzas they sell. I like helping people find the best vehicle that fits their needs.” At Korum, Murchie is able to do exactly that – owing his personal sales success to a gigantic inventory that spreads across four full lines of cars: Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Ford and Lincoln. As an outstanding citizen, Murchie also uses his resources to support the YMCA, is a cancer survivor and a former CPR instructor for the American heart association.

2012 Ford Escape Hybrid By Alison Lakin

Overview With an average fuel consumption of 32 miles per gallon, the Ford Escape Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the American market. By that quality alone, it should be on every economyminded car shoppers’ list. But the Escape Hybrid has more than stellar fuel economy to entice buyers – it also has savvy tech features, strong driving characteristics and a comfortable, welldesigned interior space, thanks to Ford’s diligent upkeep of the second-generation model. The Hybrid is capable of driving 44 mph without the use of the gasoline engine, but it does so without compromising the quality of the drive – something of a wonder for a hybrid, and the inclusion of Microsoft’s SYNC voice-activation system takes hands-free controls to another level. The Escape Hybrid’s one downfall is a big one, though: the price hovers near $30,000 – which means it has a $4-5K premium over similarlyspeced Escapes as well as the majority of the compact SUV competition. Still – even with Germany’s onslaught of clean dieselSUVs – you’d be hard-pressed to find another vehicle out there that can combine the fuel economy numbers, cargo space, functionality and comfort for the price.

What’s to Like The most blatant reason to get the Escape Hybrid is for its fuel economy, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in other departments. A maximum 66.1 cubic feet of cargo space means this compact SUV will easily haul your gear with room to spare. Comfort level is high for the front seats, and most drivers will slide easily into the cabin space. Microsoft’s SYNC is still one of the best infotainment systems on the market. The Drive DriverSide Driving Impressions The Escape Hybrid sets itself apart from other hybrids simply due to the fact that you never feel as though the drive is compromised. It’s partly because it’s a compact SUV – thus, there is less demand on the quality of the drive than for sedans – and partly because of the balanced power delivery from the hybrid drivetrain. The Escape consistently gives you either power or efficiency when your driving demands it, and the switch between the two power sources is nearly seamless. Feathering the throttle takes patience – especially when you’re trying to cruise to 44 mph on electric power alone – but city mileage can reach much higher numbers than the EPA estimates if you do so. Regenerative brakes recharge the battery while stopping, giving you the option to cruise on electricity for quite some time, though brake pedal feel is a little dull as a result. When the engine does eventually kick in, the fourcylinder Atkinson cycle engine never feels underpowered despite its small displacement.

2012 Ford Focus By Alison Lakin

Talk to any self-respecting European car enthusiast and they will no doubt praise the work of Ford over the past decade. True, Ford’s European branch has done a brilliant job keeping itself current among potential car buyers, but for various reasons, the magic has long been denied entry into America. Fortunately, the head honchos at Ford revised their grand plans, and we no longer have to bemoan our station in life as second-class car owners to the Europeans. The 2012 Ford Focus is the most recent addition in a line of vehicles that includes the Fiesta, the Transit Connect, and the forthcoming C-Max. In fact, it’s hardly recognizable from the outgoing generation. A new interior and exterior breathe life

into the Focus, and the drive quality is superb for a vehicle in its class. If that weren’t enough to pique your interest, take a look at those gas mileage numbers: at 38 mpg highway standard, the Focus is up there with the best of the fuel savers. Dramatic improvements across the board make us want to add the 2012 Focus to everyone’s shopping lists. What’s to Like This Ford has the

looks and style to rival the competition. Drive quality is excellent. The interior fit and finish is among the best we’ve seen in a car of this price range. A huge amount of available options, including a hatchback or sedan body style, means there is a Focus for everyone. Highway gas mileage of up to 38 mpg is fantastic, and a fuel economy package ups it to 40 mpg. Driving Impressions If your only impression of the Focus’ drive is from the lastgeneration’s sullen, underpowered performance, you’ll be blown away by the improvement.

Welcomes

2012 Jaguar XFR By Alison Lakin

The end of Ford’s ownership and the transfer to Tata signaled a revival for the iconic brand, and seemingly in celebration they launched the XF. Suddenly, Jaguar was back in business. The XF sedan featured gorgeous exterior lines, a low-slung body style and enough trimmings inside to keep the most discerning customer satisfied. But more importantly, it drove well. In short, it is the best Jag to hit the U.S. market in ages. It seemed there was only one thing that could improve upon it: the creation of an R model. And so Jaguar plonked a suCE VI AL R I SE EC P S

Mayer: continued from Page 14

percharged V-8 engine behind the blunted nose, added sill extensions and front air intakes, included even more luxuries within the cabin and sat it all atop 20-inch wheels. The XFR rockets to 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds thanks to 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. It’s an exceedingly fun drive and an exceedingly elegant sedan. If this is the new Jaguar, we’re 100 percent on board. Just let us sit behind the wheel. What’s to Like: All features are included in the $80,000 price tag – suede headlining, navi-

gation system, formidable Bowers & Wilkins 440W surround sound system – and because of this, the XFR instantly achieves a high level of comfort for driver and passengers alike. The sedan handles exceptionally well, and while power is on the intense side, it never feels overwhelming or out of control. The Drive: The V-8’s deep rumble presents itself upon start, and power feels almost limitless as you careen around corners and speed down the highway. Press the checkered flagadorned button on the dash and Dynamic Mode engages, giving the big cat an abundance of torque delivery and more aggressive responses. Stability control won’t let you put a foot out of place, but you’ll find it doesn’t limit the car too terribly either.

2012 KIA RIO ByAlison Lakin

With nine new product launches in just three years, a subtle observer might say that Kia is on a roll. But calling what they’re doing a complete revitalization of the brand would be selling their efforts short. The manufacturer is experiencing unprecedented sales success, and it’s because they seem to be selling exactly what America wants right now: fuel-efficient, reasonably priced vehicles filled with tech and comfort features. The fact that their design team is hitting back-to-back home runs doesn’t hurt either. The Rio 5-Door is yet another completely redesigned vehicle from Kia. Really, the only thing left from the last-generation Rio is the name. New styling – inside and out – brings it into the 21st centu-

ry, while a 1.6-liter engine is high on efficiency. That, plus a number of thoughtful modifications, helps the Rio return 40 mpg highway as well. The B-segment – what we call the sub-compact class – is growing steadily. The segment is too chock full of great cars to call out a winner, but with the Rio, there’s no doubt that Kia will continue to improve brand recognition and garner sales. What’s to Like Fuel economy is stellar, and unlike some other sub-compacts, the Rio doesn’t need a more expensive economy package to hit the magic 40 mpg highway number. Standard USB and aux jacks are a welcome bonus. For this segment the seats are particularly comfortable. The volume leader EX trim is well appointed for the price. Rear headroom is surprisingly spacious. As usual, the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty is a segment leader.

and more powerful than the Prius, and it seems they have succeeded. What’s to Like The Insight offers all the drivability of a regular gasoline vehicle and the fuel-economy benefits of a hybrid. An all-new Eco Assist program helps you get the absolute most out of every drop of fuel in a fun and easy-to-use way and the interior is comfortable enough for serious road trips. Thirteen years ago, Honda introduced a new type of vehicle to America – the hybrid. While it reportedly managed 70 mpg thanks to an extremely light-weight design and a fuel-stingy 70 horsepower motor, global sales only came to around 18,000 units. And that’s over seven years. A quirky, ahead of its time design, a tiny stature in a land of giant SUVs and less expensive gas all conspired to hinder the Insight’s success, but Honda wasn’t one to give up easily. This time Honda is back in the game with a second generation Insight, and they have set their sights on the extremely successful Toyota Prius. Can the Insight topple their rival’s king of green? Oh, yes. Honda needed to make the Insight less expensive, more comfortable

Sales Manager, Infiniti of Tacoma

2012 Infiniti QX56 By Jon Alain Guzik What’s to Like Infiniti has spared no expense in equipping the QX, and it shows – interior quality and refinement are exceptional. The standard equipment list is longer than we could begin to mention, which in our opinion is good thing.

By Brennan Purtzer

Mike Sears found gold on the day he asked his wife, Martha, to marry him. The Infiniti of Tacoma sales manager was actually panning for gold that day, along with his rock-hounding girlfriend, seven years ago this month. Sears had met Martha through their shared interest in rock hounding, and eventually it was prospecting in Lucas Creek that brought Sears to his knees to pop the question. Sears, who grew up on a berry farm near Mossyrock, wa (35 miles SE of Centralia), and went to Sehome high school in Bellingham, has been selling Nissan cars since 1976. “Our product is one that’s easy to get passionate about,” Sears said. “Even in the 70’s, the honeybee had enthusiasts behind it.” It’s more than the cars themselves that excite Sears today. “What gets me out of bed is to meet someone new so that I can make a change in their perception of what a car salesman can be.” At home, Sears has a variety of hobbies. Besides gold panning and hunting for unique rocks such as Washington’s Carnelian, he also plays the acoustic guitar and practices a special type of woodworking. Raised in a family of carpenters, Sears has developed the art of “green woodworking.” He produces speaker and knitting boxes, without using nails or screws, but turns his wood and dovetails it so that casings are self-enclosed. When Sears married his sweetheart, they merged their families into a “Brady Bunch” of six children. Today he boasts nine grandchildren, along with an Australian Shepherd, “Lilly,” and a cat named “Jezebel.” A Vietnam Vet who served in an A6 Navy Squadron, Sears enjoys classic rock, and supporting charities such as Rick’s Toys for Kids.

While we have always liked the QX from Infiniti, we thought it was more of a dressed up Nissan Armada than its own vehicle. Apparently so did Infiniti, as they created a completely new-from-the-ground-up QX56. All the time that Infiniti spent engineering the new QX shows – it’s larger, more sumptuous and overall, reflects the brand ethos in a much more enlightened way.

Interesting Vehicle Features Infiniti has equipped a huge amount of standard options and chances are if you can dream it up, the QX has it. But for those who want a little more kit and a couple quieter passengers, there’s the $2,450 Theater Package that equips two rear-facing, seveninch monitors mounted on each headrest with wireless headphones and remote control.

Dave Cooper: As busy as a guy can be Senior technician, Gamblin Motors

By Brennan Purtzer With his young face and short, dark hair, you’d never guess Dave Cooper worked seven days a week and had raised eight children. You’d also never guess he’d been the Gamblin shop foreman for nearly 17 years. Cooper, after graduating from Kentridge High School in ’78, followed his brother-in-law up to Enumclaw to try working their own auto business at what is today the lumberyard between Del’s Farm & Feed and Jenn’s Pet Parlor. “There was an open shop,” Cooper said. “After three years at our own shop, my brother-in-law went to construction and I went to work at Ken’s ” After years working at Ken’s auto clinic (now Mike’s), Cooper moved up to Gamblin Motors in ’87, and moved into the role of senior technician around 1995. Today he serves as one of Gamblin’s General Managers, and is an ASE Certified Master Technician. While Cooper works on autos seven days-a-week,

including work as a shop instructor with Green River Community College, it really wasn’t something he imagined himself doing as a youth. “I love electronics and technology,” he said. I wanted to get into the Navy, but I was taking allergy shots and they 4-F’d me.” Today his children have chosen the path of his younger dreams. His oldest son, David III is serving in the Navy, based at reactor headquarters in Washington, D.C., he’s in a position to have a great career. Two other sons, Joel and Jonathan have enlisted with the National Guard, Joel having already served two tours in the Middle East. As busy as he is, Cooper has little time for hobbies besides “being dad,” but that wasn’t always the case. Years ago, he would enjoy driving to Seattle to enjoy performances by the Seattle Symphony, and even The Phantom of the Opera. Locally, he’s involved with The Summit Church. “I’m a pretty simple guy,” he says. “This place (Gamblin Motors) is my home. I’ve been here a long time and my customers are like family to me.”

They know what they are doing at Enumclaw Auto Rebuild They really do. At Enumclaw Auto Rebuild, you get the benefit of 75 years of family knowledge, at the most experienced body shop in town – in business since 1944 – and still fixing anything from minor fender-benders and scratches to major reconstructive surgery. Owner Steve Maris has been working the shop since the day after he graduated high school 32 years ago, eventually taking it over from his father, who started working there back in 1957. “Dad started at the shop the day after high school, and I did too,” said Maris. “Most people who come in, we know them, they know us...or they come by referral.” For Steve’s family, the plateau has been home for nearly 100 years, with one of his grandpas homesteading the area at the Finnish settlement near Buckley in 1929. Today you may recognize the Maris name from the Maris Farm, which hosts seasonal events, especially in the Fall season. “At the shop you’ll find the same building, with the same quality people and the same quality work you’ve seen here for decades,” Maris said. “Longevity is a big thing.” He is now restoring his Uncle Gene’s 1935 Dodge Pickup that Gene and his dad used to race in the 1950’s. Asked to imagine another lifestyle, Maris scratches his head. “I suppose I could have been anything,” he said. “But I know I’m doing exactly what I should be doing… I could have been a ship captain, anything.” Maris uses his skills to help the greater good whenever he’s approached. When the Veterans Memorial Purple Heart was vandalized or the food bank’s van needed painting, they didn’t hesitate to offer their assistance. “Sometimes you don’t have to think about it, you just help.” Alongside Maris is longtime employee Kraig Kaelin, who started the day after he graduated high school in 1998. Seven years ago Partner Louie Dedersen retired, after working alongside Maris since 1980. Enumclaw Auto Rebuild is located at 1942 Railroad St, Enumclaw, and can be reached at (360) 825-2981.

Joe Karuza: The man they come to see

2012 Chevy Volt By Alison Lakin

Sales professional, Sunset Chevrolet

The former’s power comes from a lithium-ion battery pack and electric motor combination that switches over to a hybrid mode when the charge has been depleted, after about 40 miles. The car then uses a small 1.4-liter engine to power the wheels, charging the battery when braking or coasting and using battery power when available. Charging is a simple affair, and on a standard outlet it will take about 10-12 hours, while a 240-volt outlet can fully charge the battery in about four hours.

No car in the last decade has been talked about more than the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Had the recession and subsequent bailout not occurred, the Volt might have ended up as a oneoff, Chevrolet’s attempt to throw its hat into the electric/ alternative fuel ring. Instead, the first-ever production extended-range vehicle became their saving grace, and its success lies in its unique power range and impressive quality. To lay any confusion to rest, the Volt is both an electric car and a hybrid.

Details... (is it an electric car? a hybrid? what’s the actual mpg?) may have been haggled over for seemingly years now, so it’s easy to forget that the Volt is, at its core, simply a good vehicle.

By Brennan Purtzer Joe always has a big smile on his face. You would too if every day you walked past employee of the month plaques that sometimes held your name 11 out of 12 months of the year; that’s Joe. He’s been a valuable asset at Sunset Chevy since 1994, ever since Jerry Yoder convinced him to quit delivering tires, and start selling cars at the tender young age of 45. “I sat down with Jerry, and he just asked me how many times I’d called in sick,” Joe said. “I told him, ‘once.’” he said. “Once per week?’ Jerry asked. ‘Once a month? Once a year?’ … I told him, once, in 14 years. Jerry crumpled up his interview paper, threw it in the trash, and asked me if I could start on Monday, and it’s been great ever since.” Joe loves boating and fishing, and – until his knee started acting up a couple of years ago – snowmobiling. What he loves about selling cars is the thrill of making people happy. He’s especially glad to have reached the point where about 80 percent of his customers are repeat or referrals. After his 18 years in the business, he’s sold some customers as many as five cars! Asked why he has chosen to remain as a sales associate, rather than advancing into a higher leadership role, Joe is reflective. “I’ve had gray hair forever,” he said. “If I was in a high pressure role as a GM, I’d probably have no hair at all.” As a key member of the Sunset team, he delights in taking the annual salmon fishing trip up to West Coast Resort in Canada each July. Joe attends Sumner Calvary Cha-

pel and is a longtime member of the local Elks Lodge. As a personal hobby, Karuza’s passion is the cars he sells. He loves driving his red ’68 Camaro SS to local car shows with his adopted son Steve Smith, who drives an orange ’69. A personal favorite is an all-Camaro/Chevy show each summer at the XXX Drive-In in Issaquah. All proceeds from this show go to benefit Childrens’ hospital and the LEO foundation. Karuza spends his personal time assisting his loving wife, Gaile, a cancer survivor. As she has regained her health, Joe says he’d like to see her put more weight back on. He playfully threatens her, “If you don’t start adding weight, I’m going to have to buy you a gallon of peanut butter!” Asked to envision himself in another role, he said he can see his retirement as slowing his pace and moving up the hill to Sunset’s Bonney Lake facility, selling RVs. But not before he reaches his goal. Karuza shows his fist, decorated with a Chevrolet ring, enshrined with diamonds. Among them are six empty holes, indicating another half-dozen years of commitment to the franchise he loves.
