Finding sobriety in Federal Way Mirror staff reports Seven days a week, there is help in Federal Way for people seeking sobriety.

A number of 12-step and support programs exist in Federal Way and King County. September is National Recovery Month, and a proclamation was made last fall by the Federal Way City Council.

“It might not be very visible in Federal Way, but recovery from substance abuse is very strong here,” said Pat Godfrey, a Federal Way resident and vice chairman of the King County Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Administrative Board. He voluntarily and regularly connects residents with resources that lead to sober living.

“One person can achieve recovery, but not alone,” Godfrey said.

“Recovery from substance abuse and mental illness is a never-ending process, not a destination.”

Godfrey’s outreach is inspired by his own 30 years of sobriety. He grew up in an alcoholic family and adopted behaviors that led to his addiction. After hitting an emotional bottom, he recognized the problem and entered a 12-step recovery program — an action that has “taken a family broken by alcoholism and healed it,” he said.

“I had a number of problems over the years and never really saw alcohol as the source of the problem,” said Godfrey, also noting the nearly 25-year sobriety of his grown daughter. “We have a far better chance of our grandchildren staying clean and sober because their parents are staying sober.”

Children of alcoholics have a 50 percent chance of developing their own dependence. One of the fastest growing segments of abuse involves prescription medications for people over age 55.

Breast cancer: Surviving and healing in Federal Way Mirror staff reports

Mammogram reminder One of the longest times of Chris Fagundes’ life was Mother’s Day weekend 1999. That weekend, at age 37, she awaited test results to find out if the lump in her left breast was cancerous.

“I have a whole new respect for Mother’s Day,” said Fagundes, recalling the flowers she received that year. “They bought me tulips because I wanted something that would keep living and growing.”

The day the doctor called with the prognosis, she went to her son’s baseball game — determined to go on with life. Less than two weeks after learning she had breast cancer, Fagundes underwent a lumpectomy. Four chemotherapy treatments followed over the next three months. Then came radiation treatment.

“There are very few pictures of me without my hair,” she said.

“The boys and the husband shaved their heads. I had all the different bandanas.”

She has been healthy and cancer-free ever since. She receives regular mammograms, and her crisis more than 12 years ago inspired friends to seek mammograms.

“I begged everybody to go out and get mammograms,” she said, noting that some of those people discovered benign lumps.

The experience has also brought her family closer together.

Fagundes and her husband, Doug, have four children. The couple have owned and operated Java Billiards in Federal Way since 2002. Aside from maintaining a solid support network and a good sense of humor, Fagundes said faith helped keep her spirits high when beating cancer.

“You don’t take things for granted quite as much,” she said.

“You appreciate birthdays because they’re better than the alternative.”

Skin care therapy for cancer patients

Becky Kuehn, medical aesthetician at the St. Francis Hospital Women’s Health and Breast Center in Federal Way, aims to nourish the patient’s skin — and soul.

Mirror staff reports Cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments often suffer visible — and painful — side effects on their skin.

The treatments, while killing cancer cells, also affect healthy cells including the skin and nails. Patients can suffer from varying degrees of hair loss, rashes, dry skin, peeling, blisters, swelling and loss of feeling.

Medical aestheticians like Becky Kuehn are licensed to work with these ailments caused by cancer treatments.

Tucked away at the St. Francis Hospital Women’s Health and Breast Center in Federal Way, Kuehn’s massage room is all about comfort, with soothing background music and a calmingly clean scent.

From facial skin treatments to hand, foot and scalp massages, each session

aims to nourish the patient’s skin — and soul.

“I tell them, this is your time, this is all about you,” she said of her oncology patients, who talk about whatever they want to talk about — if they choose to talk at all.

In this room, the power of touch is an important part of healing. The therapy, delivered by Kuehn’s hands and supported with her listening ears, soothes patients’ emotional side. Sometimes oncology patients fall asleep during treatment, which Kuehn considers a compliment.

Kuehn empathizes with the traumatic shock of a cancer diagnosis because she’s been through it herself. She was diagnosed with uterine cancer at age 18, shortly after getting married. It took one chemotherapy treatment for the cancer to go away for good, and 34 years later, she remains cancer-free.

Painkiller addiction in Washington and beyond

By WILLIAM E. SCOTT Commentary fter reading recent media reports such as The Seattle Times series, “Methadone and the politics of pain,” I’ve been saddened to learn of the overwhelming number of Washington residents living in chronic pain and/or addicted to painkillers. Also, the near universal frustration of both patients and providers for solutions is alarming.

I’m sure that all caring persons agree that no one should ever be left in agonizing pain, but is increasing dependence on painkillers the only answer?

For instance, why is this largely an American problem? With less than 5 percent of the world’s population, Americans consume 80 percent of painkillers sold. A recent comment on the Times website noted, “I just worked in Cuba.

There (are) no narcotics except for a couple of doses after major surgery. Tylenol is over the counter and ibuprofen by prescription.

Somehow they manage and they have a lot less pain. Consider that paradox? They have no pain medicines and have less pain?”

I’ve been encouraged to hear that some patients are managing to get off painkillers, including Cynthia Toussaint. According to an ABC News report, she “was confined to her bed, writhing in pain from muscle spasms, unable to walk or to live a meaningful life.” Yet, 10 years later, after turning to a variety of integrative medicine treatments, she resumed her singing career. Toussaint noted, “There’s a whole range of underappreciated non-traditional treatment options that are low-cost, effective and with no side effects.”

A recent article in The St. Petersburg Times explains how addiction to prescription painkillers nearly killed ex-NFL star Randy Grimes.

Yet, at a point that Grimes describes as “a spiritual moment,” he began to regain control of his life, found renewed purpose and now works to help others to overcome the same addiction. Throughout my entire life, I’ve taken a spiritual approach to my own health and

have experienced consistent, positive results.

It’s also encouraging to read reports on therapeutic approaches that focus on thought and the mind in reducing pain. Studies at Stanford, Duke and Wake Forest universities have proven many mind-body approaches to be effective in clinical trials.

One reason alternative therapies are not more commonly used by the public appears to be the lack of insurance coverage. According to The Seattle Times, Rep. Jim Moeller believes it is “unfortunate” that Medicaid covers narcotic painkillers, but not alternative treatments. However, there are signs this may be changing. From a recent press release, starting in July 2012, the 13,000 employees of Maricopa County, AZ, will soon have the option of an integrative approach “that embodies the philosophy and practice of healing oriented medicine, addressing mind, body and spirit.”

Specialists who work with patients dealing with pain have told me they support expanding health coverage to include alternative therapies that are less obtrusive and generally more affordable.

On Dec. 16, the Obama administration surprised many by declaring that each state will now be allowed to have greater freedom in what their respective health exchanges will include.

This may be a unique opportunity to include alternative treatments, especially the treatments that already qualify as medical expense deductions for federal income tax purposes. Including alternative therapies in health insurance will make them more accessible to patients who may be struggling to find better ways to manage their pain.

Federal Way woman leaves obesity behind Mirror staff reports

Federal Way resident Pansy Claxton lost 137 pounds in two years. She was recently named one of 100 first-prize winners in the nationwide Weight Watchers Inspiring Stories Contest.

“Losing weight is a mental thing,” said Claxton, whose weight once exceed 306 pounds. She noted the psychological struggles in her weight loss journey. “I really learned how to eat and how much food my body needed. It taught me to look at food as a fuel for my body.”

Nowadays, she exercises and competes in long-distance running events. She tracks what she eats, and instead of reaching for chips and cookies, she reaches for fruit. And if she wants a treat, she eats a treat.

“I eat it and I enjoy it,” she said. “I love chips. Now I know I can’t eat the whole bag. I get a portion and I’m good.”

Claxton’s weight loss has been contagious among her family.

Her sister, daughter and son have lost a combined 215 pounds.

In Washington, nearly 26 percent of residents are considered obese. King County has a rate of 21.4 percent of adults (as of 2008), which is lower than surrounding counties.

Obesity is defined by having too much body fat, and is usually caused by consuming more calories than are burned. Other contributing factors include lack of exercise and drinking too much alcohol. Obesity is different than being overweight, which can be caused by extra muscle or water, for example. Extra weight is linked to an increased risk in health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure.

Weight loss occurs when a person eats fewer calories than the body uses, causing the body to pull energy from fat-storing cells.

A person’s weight and height are used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI). For example, a healthy weight for a 5-foot-9 adult is between 125 pounds and 168 pounds (18.5 to 24.9 BMI). An adult with a BMI over 30 is considered obese. The CDC notes that BMI can be misleading for people such as athletes, who may be considered overweight because of higher muscle mass.

Biggest secret for better health: Your doctor

Having a regular primary care physician (PCP) or family doctor can improve your health and your medical care experience. A PCP’s responsibility is to: • Help you make health care decisions • Treat minor problems before they become more serious • Provide preventive care to help keep you well • Refer you when you need to see a specialist • Manage chronic conditions • Keep track of your medical records and health history Regularly seeing a PCP can prevent diseases by appropriately organizing risk factors. If we can diagnose early, we can treat

Your PCP may not give you a frequent-shopper card for stopping by. But studies show that patients who see the same primary doctor regularly get perks such as higher satisfaction with their health care, more coordinated care, lower costs and a stronger doctor-patient relationship.

If there is trust between the doctor and patient, the patient will talk about their problems. When a patient is comfortable with a doctor, the patient is more likely to follow recommendations and there will be better health outcomes.

Prepare Now for Peace of Mind Later - A family health and safety guide Home fires are the most common disaster that the Red Cross responds to and also the most preventable.

Families need to take a few simple precautions to avoid tragedies, such as having working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and having family fire escape plans in place to help get everyone out of the house safely. The American Red Cross recommends the following when creating your family escape plan: • Identify two ways to escape from every room in the home.

• Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

• Select a safe location away from the home where your family can meet after escaping.

• Consider purchasing and storing escape ladders for rooms above ground level and make sure to learn how to use them.

• If you see smoke or fire in your first escape route, use your second way out.

•If you must exit through smoke, crawl low under the smoke.

•Before escaping through a closed door, feel the door before opening it. If it is warm, use your second escape route.

•If smoke, heat or flames block both of your exit routes, stay in the room with the door closed. Place a rolled towel underneath the door. Signal for help by waving a brightly colored cloth or shining a flashlight at the window. If there is a telephone in the room, call the fire department and let them know your exact location inside the home.

• Once you’ve escaped, stay out.

Here’s help on knowing when to call 9-1-1 Each year South King Fire and Rescue responds to about 15,000 calls for assistance. Most of these calls are responded to in about 5 minutes. Here are some ways you can help the fire department, police services or rescue personnel help you during an emergency:

Emergency Vehicles and You

Only Call 9-1-1 to Report:

• A fire • A serious crime • Any serious medical condition • Any situation requiring immediate response of police, fire or emergency medical personnel.

What the 9-1-1 Dispatcher Will Need to Know:

• Address of the emergency • Phone number you are calling from • Nature of the emergency • Stay calm, speak clearly, and be prepared to answer questions, receive instructions and stay on the phone until you are told to hang up.

When an emergency vehicle has its lights and siren on, it is responding to an emergency. It is the law and YOUR responsibility to: • Pull to the right side of the road and STOP until the emergency vehicle has passed.

• Give all emergency vehicles the rightof-way.

• Keep back at least 500 feet from an emergency vehicle when it is responding with lights and sirens.

• Do not drive over fire hoses.

• Drive carefully around an emergency scene.

Some Other Tips:

• Make sure your address is visible from the street.

• Keep areas around fire hydrants clear of parked cars, fences, bushes, tall weeds and debris.

• Keep bushes, trees, grass and weeds cut or trimmed to avoid the chance of brush fires.

• If you have security bars on your windows, make sure they are fitted with inside quick releases.

At the Emergency

• Have someone wait at the street to direct the fire and police departments to the emergency.

• If you are a witness to the emergency, stay at the scene to provide emergency personnel with information.

• If you are asked to move or leave the area, DO IT. The firefighters and police officers are looking out for your safety.

• Remember, things can become very hectic in an emergency. Firefighters and police officers need to do their job in a safe way.

Free Smoke Alarms for seniors and Low-income Families • South King Fire and Rescue has funding from local and state organizations for the distribution of free smoke detectors with batteries to senior citizens or families with low or fixed incomes who live within the fire jurisdiction. Fall Prevention • Educators will visit your home to do a safety survey. They will talk with you about the reasons why falls happen, and give you ideas on how to reduce injuries at home. They can also install risk reduction devices. For grieving parents, tiny baby clothes make a big difference Mirror staff reports When a baby is stillborn, grieving parents need comfort and closure while dealing with their loss.

Minutes of Gold is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing that comfort in the form of clothing — allowing parents to see their baby dressed as a baby in the few minutes they spend together.

Minutes of Gold was started in 1992 by Carol Slaugh of Florence, Ore. The organization sends handmade layettes (a collec-

The layettes include a blanket, cap, gown, diaper and matching crocheted roses along with a poem on a card. The diapers are small enough to barely cover the palm of an adult’s hand.

When a baby is stillborn, nurses face the task of presenting the child to grieving parents and families. The gesture is sometimes marred by a lack of sensitivity. Some patients have told stories of nurses presenting the deceased baby in a metal pan or wrapped in a bloody hospital blanket.

Minutes of Gold’s website contains several testimonials from hospital employees who say the donations of layettes truly make a difference.

“The clothing helps our hospital convey to grieving families that their loss is just as significant and painful as that of an older family member,” reads a letter from Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Arizona. “It is one way we together can help them build memories of their short time with their babies.”

Jerrie Chan, a resident at Mitchell Place in Federal Way, has knitted more than 300 blankets in the past three years for Minutes of Gold. Chan and five volunteers meet weekly in Federal Way. She knits one or two blankets a week. Donations are assembled for shipment in Florence, Ore. The feedback from grateful parents makes the endeavor all the more worthwhile, Chan said, adding that she has received requests for baby clothing in a “triple small” size. Letters from parents express their appreciation for a thoughtful gesture during a time of unthinkable grief.

“It’s a labor of love,” said Chan, who suffered a miscarriage in her younger years. “You just can’t help but feel the love for these people.”
