Economic diversity helps city forge ahead

P

oulsbo is in a period of revitalization, thanks to the diversity of the city’s businesses.

Poulsbo residents enjoy the amenities of living in a city and at the gateway to the forests and waterways of the North End. At the junction of highways 305 and 3 sits College Marketplace, a large retail center near the Olympic College Poulsbo campus. Down the road, Highway 305 crosses Viking Avenue, once known as Auto Row when it boasted car and RV dealerships.

When Courtesy Ford, last of the

Auto Row dealerships and one of the largest businesses in the city, sold its last car and shuttered its doors in August, Viking Avenue businesses began looking to find a new theme to attract customers.

Putting their heads together, the businesses hosted their first Christmas celebration with lighting of a 35-foot tree, haystack rides on tractors and caroling. Future plans include an auto show and a year-round farmers market. With a versatile set of clothing boutiques, restaurants, supply stores, a Vikingthemed ice cream shop and a movie

theater, Viking Avenue businesses hope their thoroughfare comes back a little more diverse and stronger.

The city is also moving ahead with a large new neighborhood — a mix of apartments, businesses and senior care apartments — at Highway 305 and Bond Road.

Poulsbo wraps around Liberty Bay, with views of the Olympics and marine life. The city has nearly 100 acres of parks, ranging from neighborhood parks to 20-plus acres of peaceful wildlife habitat. The bay also provides for a gentle marina

for commercial and recreational boaters and fishermen, as well as tour boats and kayak tours of local salmon streams.

Poulsbo is known as “Little Norway,” evident with prevalent Viking themes in its downtown district.

The city’s Scandinavian roots have helped the area weather the economic storm through tourism.

Downtown Poulsbo resembles a quaint European village. Thriving independent shops include art galleries, featuring local artists; bars, coffeehouses and restaurants, many of which feature live music and readings; and a live-performance theater. The city’s oldest building, near Front Street and Jensen Way, is currently home to a tattoo shop called Thor’s Hammer and Needle.

A trip to downtown Poulsbo wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Marine Science Center near the Port of Poulsbo. After a frozen

water pipe burst around Thanksgiving 2010, the flooded building was forced to close for repairs. The aquarium re-opened to the enthusiasm of children, teachers and local marine enthusiasts in May 2011. For educational purposes, the aquarium features animals found in Puget Sound waters, including a juvenile giant Pacific octopus, currently a two-year-old female named Paprika.

Loggers first came to Poulsbo by boat, rowing up Liberty Bay to the heavy forest along the banks. It was used as a summer camp and fishing spot for the nearby Suquamish Tribe. The first non-Native settler, Jorgen Eliason, came to the area in 1883. He donated some of his homestead land to found First Lutheran Church in 1886 — which still stands proudly on Fourth Avenue — and the town of Poulsbo was born.

The Suquamish people knew Poulsbo as Tcu Tcu Lats. The name means “place of maples,” for the proliferation of maples along the north shore of the bay.

May-October The Kingston Farmers Market, at Mike Wallace Memorial Park at the Port of Kingston, is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays from May to October.

Homegrown and homemade goods from local artisans, crafters and organic farmers. The market also has weekly entertainment from local and regional musical acts.

Locally grown and produced items include eggs, herbs, honey, plants and fresh-picked flowers. The market draws artisans from all over Kitsap County and the Olympic Peninsula and unique gifts are easy to come by. Enjoy some fresh-baked goods and coffee, or grab a plate of some great food and head over to the picnic tables and dine in a festive atmosphere.

Washington State University Master Gardeners are on hand to give gardening tips. Junior vendors can also set up a table and sell their homemade goods. WIC and SFMNP checks are welcome.

April-October The Poulsbo Farmers Market season takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, April to December at the corner of 7th Avenue and Iverson Street in Poulsbo. The Poulsbo Farmers Market has more than 60 vendors and is affiliated with the Kitsap Community Agricultural Alliance, Kitsap Master Gardeners, Puget Sound Fresh, Seattle Tilth, WSU’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the Washington State Farmers Markets Association. Several businesses that started at the market have gone on to open storefront locations.

A rustic restaurant voted by diners as having “The Best Steak in North Kitsap.” A two-acre waterfront park that provides access to the bay. A century-old mercantile where customers rave about the biscuits and gravy and Jackie’s chicken dill sandwich. One of the Navy’s 14 official museums in the United States.

It doesn’t take long to travel through Keyport, but there’s a lot to enjoy once you get here.

Keyport, which had a population of 544 residents in the 2010 census, juts out from the peninsula to mark where Liberty Bay ends and Port Orchard Bay begins.

History is a living part of this small town. It’s home to Naval Base Kitsap — Keyport, which was established in 1914 as the Pacific Coast Torpedo Station; it became the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in 1930. More than 2,000 civilians and 800 military personnel worked here during World War II. The base is now an undersea warfare engineering station.

Historically, Keyport was served by the Mosquito Fleet and the only way to and from town was by boat. Today, there’s only one road into town.

There’s no mail delivery; residents have to pick up their mail at the post office.

Jackie Lewis, who owns two businesses in town, says the “little bit of

isolation” is one of the town’s attractive features.

“You come across that bridge, and that’s Keyport,” she said. “It’s not exciting, but it’s a nice little town to live in.”

She paints a Rockwellian portrait of the town she’s called home since 1968.

It’s a place where there are few sidewalks, where children can still play in the street, where neighbors walk their dogs. “It’s peaceful and it’s quiet. It’s a nice place on the water. You can tie your boat up and spend the day.”

Navy officers and sailors have lunch at her Keyport Mercantile & Deli, which was built in 1903 on a spit on what is now the Navy base. The mercantile building was relocated to its current location in 1913-14 after the Navy

Volunteers started the local fire department, and they still staff it, though it’s now part of Fire District 18.

Keyport Bible Church has been a part of community life for a century.

Whiskey Creek Steak House — “Our steaks are bigger than the town” — was a grocery store in the early 1900s. Now, it’s a popular dining and entertainment venue, with live country, Dixieland, jazz and standards Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. (You should hear Yvonne McAllister, age 90, blow the trumpet).

The Keyport Community Club, a center of community activity since 1921, hosts a pancake breakfast every Fourth of July, followed by a parade.

Lewis’s son-in-law, Brian Watne, was reelected to the Keyport Port Commission in November; he was unopposed, as are most commissioners in small port districts like Keyport.

But he and the other commissioners have been able to do some big things: They replaced the entire marina in 2009 with new concrete pilings and slips. The Port of Keyport now has 14 private slips, 250 feet of guest moorage in five 50-foot slips, and a boat launch ramp. There is water and power at all slips.

Keyport’s main attraction, of course, is the Naval Undersea Museum. The museum has exhibits related to the ocean environment, diving, and mine warfare, submarine and torpedo technology. The exhibit includes a Howell

torpedo manufactured in 1890, a simulation of the control room of the nuclear fast-attack submarine USS Greenling; and diving equipment. The museum has the most comprehensive permanent display of torpedoes in the United States.

Oh, and admission is free.

New museum will be a North Kitsap treasure

T

he Suquamish Tribe is one of largest employers in Kitsap County, but it’s known as much for its cultural development as its economic development.

Several landmarks are distinguished by their striking examples of Coast Salish art: The longhouse architectural elements of the House of Awakened Culture, the house posts at the Veterans Memorial, the gravesite memorial to Chief Seattle at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, the art work at Clearwater Casino Hotel and Resort, and the new Suquamish Museum and Cultural Center, which is expected to open in May 2012. By 2013, a new clubhouse will open at Suquamish’s White Horse Golf Club.

Suquamish’s purchase of White Horse Golf Course in 2010 added another facet to its offering of entertainment. The golf course — located north of Suquamish on South Kingston Road — was designed

by Cynthia Dye McGarey. Beautiful and challenging, with yardage from 5,022 to 7,093, it was listed by Golf Digest as one of the best new courses of 2007.

Suquamish has a major impact on the North Kitsap economy, but it also has a philanthropic impact.

The Suquamish Tribe donated $85,400 to the North Kitsap School District for various programs and services. That money was provided through the Appendix X gaming

compact between the Tribe and the State of Washington.

Suquamish leaders are active politically on the regional and national levels as well.

Late in 2011, Suquamish Chairman Leonard Forsman was among 565 U.S. tribal leaders to hear first-hand of the Obama administration’s efforts to improve educational opportunities for Native people. Forsman, as well as Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Council member Francine Swift, attended the annual Tribal Nations Conference in Washington, D.C. “These meetings are not strictly symbolic,” Forsman said at the time.

And in January 2012, Suquamish hosted the Tribal Leaders Congress on Education at the Suquamish House of Awakened Culture, to discuss educational opportunities with Apple.

The Suquamish Early College High School, where students can take culturally-based classes, is being restructured for 2012-13. The plan, according to Joe Davalos, superintendent of the Suquamish Tribe’s Education Department, is to make the school more like the Running Start program offered in the North Kitsap School District. Davalos is working with local colleges to begin offering more college credit through the Suquamish school.

Government The Suquamish Tribal Government’s offices are on Suquamish Way. Tribal Council meetings are held on alternate Mondays and are open to Tribal members. Government

departments oversee various public services, including health, human services and public safety.

Local businesses The Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort Hotel and Spa, next to the Agate Pass Bridge, draws visitors from all over the Northwest for its gaming fun, entertainment, Pacific Northwest cuisine and Coast Salish art displays. During the summer months, the Clearwater hosts concerts on its event lawn.

Agate Pass Cafe, Bella Luna Pizzeria, Burton’s Motorsports, Dockside Grill and Suquamish Auto anchor the downtown core and their longevity demonstrates a loyal following.

The Masi Shop general store and gas station on State Route 305 is conveniently located for motorists traveling to and from Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island.

Local artists, artisans, farmers and fishermen sell at the Suquamish Farmers Market on Wednesdays, 3-7 p.m., April through October, across the street from the government center.

The current museum — at 15838 Sandy Hook Road — is open Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At its new location, it will be open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Suquamish is also a regular stop on the Canoe Journey, an annual reunion of Northwest First Nations and other canoe cultures, in late July. In 2009, Suquamish served as the endpoint for the Journey, hosting thousands of visitors for a week-long celebration.

Chief Seattle Days is held on the first weekend in August. The celebration includes canoe races, a commemoration at Chief Seattle’s grave, a powwow, and sports competitions.

Growing in economic, environmental and political influence

T

he Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe has worked hard to improve and protect the health of Port Gamble Bay. “(The) bay has been our source of economic growth, and sustained us as a culture and as a people,” Chairman Jeromy Sullivan said in October. “We need to keep it going for future generations.”

The Tribe is increasingly influential economically, environmentally, and politically.

The Tribe’s new Point Casino is expected to be completed in April.

The 52,000-square-foot building will be more than double the size of the

original, and the number of employees will grow from 126 to 206. The project is estimated to be at least a $20 million project. A portion of casino profits are awarded annually to local non-profits in the form of grants.

Other enterprises, overseen by the Port Gamble Development Authority, are the Gliding Eagle Marketplace; Cedar Specialties, which supplies cedar to other tribes for cultural purposes: and PGDAccess, which provides broadband access to S’Klallam families and all tribal entities.

Port Gamble S’Klallam participates annually in the Canoe Journey,

a gathering of Northwest Native canoe cultures. The Journey brings hundreds of visitors to the area to celebrate the traditional form of travel on the ancestral marine highways. The canoes, many of them hand-carved and decorated, are works of art. Traditional foods, dances, songs and stories are shared.

In October, Sullivan joined leaders from Olympic Property Group, Kitsap County, Suquamish Tribe, and land conservation group Forterra (formerly Cascade Land Conservancy) to announce a campaign to raise funds to buy as much as 7,000 acres and two miles of shoreline along Port Gamble Bay. In December, Port Gamble S’Klallam was represented at the third annual White House Tribal Nations Conference. The conference was attended

by S’Klallam Councilwoman Francine Swift.

The seat of Port Gamble S’Klallam government is Little Boston. Here, you’ll find departments that manage Cultural Resources, Career and Education, Child and Family Services, Early Childhood Education, Economic Development, Health Services, Natural Resources and Public Safety, Utilities.

S’Klallam, Chimakum and Skokomish leaders signed the Treaty of Point No Point in 1855, opening up this region to non-Native settlement. As a self-governing indigenous nation, Port Gamble S’Klallam has a government-to-government relationship with local, state and federal government.

As a member of the Point No Point Treaty Council and the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, Port Gamble S’Klallam works to protect the environment that has sustained its people for millennia, and protect rights contained in the treaty, among them to fish, hunt and gather in their traditional areas.

Port Gamble S’Klallam is building a new early childhood education center. Its gathering hall, The House of Knowledge, opened in 2007 and features detailed carvings, story poles, an elders’ center, and a career and education center.

It houses a branch of the Kitsap Regional Library system. The Little Boston Library was the first public library opened on an Indian reservation in Washington state, and Native and non-Native residents meet and mingle here.

The annual Hansville Coaster Games has become one of the staples of community life in the North End town.

Sense of community runs strong

H

ansville is a community where traditions matter.

Its 3,000 residents love the way of life in this northernmost community overlooking Admiralty Inlet, and they work to preserve it.

“We have a spirit of community,” said Linda Redling, chairwoman of the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council. The council hosts several community events a year, engaging the youngest to the oldest resident.

Bingo nights, wine socials, an Art Guild, rummage sales, a car show, as well as Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July and Halloween events always draw crowds. “[The] end of July Car Show and

Picnic in the Park brought the Navy Band Northwest, and car enthusiasts [came] out in droves to look, hear and experience a beautiful summer day at Buck Lake Park,” said Judy Tallman, president of the Greater Hansville Community Center.

Situated at the very tip of Kitsap Peninsula, Hansville has some pretty majestic views of Admiralty Inlet and Whidbey Island from its pebbly beaches — residents often spot passing orcas. Central Hansville is a cluster of a few shops and stores, a community center, and homes near the junction of Hansville, Point No Point, Buck Lake and Twin Spits roads. But neighborhoods also

stretch along the west side on Hood Canal, the northern strip of Admiralty Inlet, and along Puget Sound in the east to another small residential community, Eglon.

Easily the most recognizable part of Hansville is Point No Point, which includes a popular beach, the oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, and a former fishing resort where the state Department of Fish and Wildlife plans to install a boat ramp.

Point No Point is where representatives of the U.S. and the Chimikum, S’Klallam and Skokomish leaders signed a treaty in 1855, clearing the way for non-Native settlement in this region.

The Point No Point Lighthouse is still used as a navigational aid and can be toured. The Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse offers a vacation rental in the former lightkeeper’s quarters. In addition to Point No Point Park, Hansville has hundreds of acres of wildlife corridors, greenways and open space for biking, hiking, wildlife watching and other recreational activities. Buck Lake County Park, Foulweather Bluff Preserve and Norwegian Point Park are the largest parks in Hansville.

Sometimes, what you’ll find at the Greater Hansville Rummage Sale will surprise you. The rummage sale is believed to be the largest in the region. This year’s sale is Aug. 11-12 at Buck Lake Park.

The North End is famous for its fishing which, despite depleted salmon populations, continues to this day.

The state and the county recognized this recreational value and worked together to restore the boat launch at Point No Point, about a quartermile west of the lighthouse. It’s been 10 years since Hansville had a launch for boats larger than 16 feet.

When completed, its return will be welcomed by North Kitsap’s fishermen and boating organizations.

Where a colorful history comes alive

tep back to a time when the 38-star American flag flapped proudly in the air. Back when Howitzer cannon balls were still being used as artillery and a carton of Lucky Strike cigarettes cost .86.

Actually don’t take a step back, just take a quick drive north on State Route 104 or Highway 3 until you reach the town of Port Gamble.

Overlooking Port Gamble Bay and Hood Canal, this small town is packed with history. From the old mill site to the cemetery and mechanic shop, this town established in 1853 is an example of a 19th cen-

tury company town that is still alive.

The town was established after the arrival of Charles Foster, Josiah Keller, Andrew Pope and William Talbot. The businessmen built a timber mill, which remained operational until 1995.

From being onboard a ship sailing to Port Gamble — a visitor actually said she almost felt dizzy — to saw mills and traditional homes, the museum offers so much more than a quick glance around town.

Owned by Pope Resources, 4,300 acres of forested land is a popular destination for mountain bikers, runners, horse riders and everything in between. During a fairweather day, there’s even a chance to see radio-controlled airplanes cruise the skies from a specially designed runway.

Of the recreational events, the Roots Rock Trail Running series, hosted

by Poulsbo Running, offers seven races. The races are hosted February through October. For 2012, all races begin and end at gate 6 in the uplands, south of Port Gamble.

Although Port Gamble is known for its historic past, its backyard is known for recreation.

Port Gamble is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Park Service has cited Port Gamble as “the finest example of a 19th-century Pacific Coast logging community.”

Prior to its closing in 1995, the Port Gamble mill was the oldest continuously operating sawmill in North America.

The James A. Thompson House, built in 1859, is one of the oldest houses in Port Gamble.

Gustave Englebrecht, the first U.S. Navy man to die in battle in the Pacific, is buried in Port Gamble’s Buena Vista Cemetery. Englebrecht, a coxswain aboard the USS Massachusetts, was killed Nov. 19, 1856 in a battle with a Haida raiding force.

Residents here live a charmed existence

ou know a community is laid back when its biggest event of the year revolves around sand castles.

That’s how it is in Indianola, a forested town of 3,500 people on the north shore of Port Madison. Indianola was originally established as a summer community and was a stop for Mosquito Fleet ferries until the 1950s. Its forests and beaches still draw visitors.

Its tucked-away feel has fostered a tight sense of community. Visitors get a taste each summer during Indianola Days, a festival celebrating beaches, friends and sunshine.

A sand castle competition breeds good-natured rivalry.

“It’s a lot of fun and as far as Indianola goes, this is the big thing,” said Eric Finlon, a sandcastle champion of 2010. His team’s winning creation?

A “corn dog” – a sand creature that was half dog and half an ear of corn.

True to form for Indianola, there is no set date for Indianola Days. It arrives on whichever weekend coincides with the lowest minus-tide. Along with sand castles, Indianola Days has a car show, dance, pet parade, salmon bake, tennis tournament, and talent night.

The beach is an amenity for locals, open only to members of the Indianola Beach Improvement Club, which serves as a casual governing body for the town and its residents.

Celebrations, meetings and gather-

ings are held at the Indianola Clubhouse. The clubhouse, in the center of town, is tended by volunteers.

Across the street from the clubhouse, the Bud Merrill Pavilion is a venue for craft displays, farmers markets and outdoor barbecues. The Saturday market at the pavilion features a gathering of vendors selling local goods and produce.

The local hangout is the Indianola Country Store and Deli — the only store in town. Outside, a community bulletin board keeps residents informed of local goings-on. Inside, visitors can fill up on sandwiches and other deli fare.

A small town with a lot of heart

I

t doesn’t take long to tell that Kingston residents have a lot of pride in their town. Start anywhere in the small town adjacent to Apple Tree Cove and see for yourself.

On one end of town, the sound of shoppers at the Kingston Farmers Market echo off the rock walls of Mike Wallace Memorial Park, while local bands keep shoppers’ toes tapping. Along the main drag to the other end of town, family businesses share their passions with visitors as they create local art and food for all to enjoy.

Take the Borrowed Kitchen Bakery, for instance. Owned and operated

by Stacey and Kory Anders, the bakery does more with baked bread than looks possible in the small kitchen off State Route 104. In December 2011, the kitchen donated a loaf of bread for every dollar placed in the kitchen’s “doughnation” jar.

More than 600 loaves of bread were donated to the Kingston Food Bank.

Rolls were also baked for holiday food baskets.

A new pavilion hosts live music and weddings. A kayak float was added in 2009 as well, giving residents a place to stash their vessels close to the water.

Golfers find a beautiful and challenging course at White Horse Golf Course on South Kingston Road.

The course, which garnered national attention when it opened in 2007, was purchased in 2010 by the Suquamish Tribe.

A relatively new gem among Kingston parks is Carpenter Lake.

Village Green Community Park on West Kingston Road is a new but already popular spot for picnics and games. The little park packs in a large lawn and a play structure for kids. The property is also the future site of a new Kingston Community Center. North Kitsap voters approved a Kingston Village Green Metropolitan Park District in 2010 that will help pay for operations at

Carpenter Lake Natural Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary Kingston Carpenter Lake is the center of this 67-acre county nature preserve. Foulweather Bluff Preserve Hansville A 101-acre preserve off Twin Spits Road, two miles northwest of Hansville, owned by the Nature Conservancy of Washington.

Accessible by a trail that meanders through the forest to a sandy beach along the shore of Hood Canal. More than 300 species of plants, and stands of red alder, western hemlock, second-growth western red cedar. The preserve also has a brackish marsh sheltering many bird species, including red-breasted nuthatches and winter wrens. Dogs and other pets are not allowed.

Norwegian Point Park Hansville From State Route 104 or Miller Bay Road, go north on Hansville Road until you reach the park on the water’s edge (by the grocery store). This three-acre park is a former fishing resort site; an old boathouse, cabins and other structures still stand. The park has a pristine, sandy shoreline on Admiralty Inlet.

Old Man House Park Suquamish Tribe On Division Avenue Northeast, A one-acre park with 210 feet of saltwater frontage along Agate Pass. Old Man House Park is located on the site of the longhouse that was home of Chief Si’ahl, or Seattle. The name “Old Man House” is derived from a Chinook jargon word “o-le-man,” meaning “strong man.” A display depicts the story of Chief Seattle. The park has two unsheltered picnic sites, one with a fire ring.

Point No Point County Park Hansville A three-acre park, located at the end of Point No Point Road off Hansville Road. The Treaty of Point No Point was negotiated and signed here in 1855; Point No Point Lighthouse was built in 1879. The lighthouse is open weekends noon to 4 p.m. April to September. The beach has sweeping views of Admiralty Inlet and neighboring islands, and is a popular salmon-fishing venue. A perfect place to build sand castles, fly kites, stroll, or spend a day at the beach.

Museums & Sites www.poulsbomsc.org The Marine Science Center offers a window into Puget Sound’s marine ecosystems.

Visitors can see an assortment of sea creatures, from moon jellyfish to octopus, and view marine videos. A window in the center’s floor gives the curious a peek into Liberty Bay. Hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday through Sunday. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.

Environment Grovers Creek Salmon Hatchery 23175 Indianola Road NE, Poulsbo (360) 598-3142 The hatchery is managed by the Suquamish Tribe. Drop in during the fall when salmon are running and watch them make their way up the creek and the fish ladder into the holding ponds. Wildlife biologists are often on hand to explain the life cycle of salmon. Call to see when the fish are there. The hatchery is open 8 a.m. to dusk.

Part of the non-profit Of Sea and Shore, Inc. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated.

Stillwaters Environmental Center 26059 Barber Cut Off Road, Kingston (360) 297-2876 www.stillwaters environmentalcenter.org Stillwaters wetlands are part of a larger system that includes forest, freshwater and emergent salt marsh communities.

The center has trails that lead to a viewing platform on the salt marsh and estuary off Puget Sound, and ponds full of critters that delight children. Stillwaters hosts its annual EcoFest around Earth Day and offers numerous classes and programs all year.

Discovery Packs, available for a nominal fee, include binoculars, dip nets, field games, and observation boxes that can be taken along on walks to more deeply explore the environment.

Local History Port Gamble Museum 1 Northeast View Drive, Port Gamble (360) 297-8074 Located in the back of the Port Gamble General Store. The museum captures life and work in the once-bustling sawmill town, which is now a National Historic Landmark.

Exhibits include rooms fully furnished in 1800s fashion. The museum has an expansive collection of artifacts and photographs from the early 19th century. Hours: May 1 to Sept.

30, daily 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Oct. 1 to April 30, Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $4 for adults, $3 for military, seniors and students. Children 6 and younger free. Group and private tours are available.

The new museum’s architecture is reminiscent of a Coast Salish longhouse. Permanent and changing exhibits will tell the story of the Suquamish people. The museum’s collection includes artifacts, photographs and oral histories.

Inside features include an education room and museum store. Outside features include native plants and vegetation, and a story circle. Hours: Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; in new museum, daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $4 per adult, $3 for seniors and $2 for children.

Artifacts on display include major U.S. torpedoes, a Confederate mine from the Civil War, torpedo tubes from the ballistic missile submarine USS Tecumseh, and a simulation of the control room from the fastattack submarine Greenling. Audio, video and hands-on activities. Admission: Free. Hours: Daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Tuesdays October to May.
