Aljoya Mercer Island has been awarded the Business of the Year award by the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce.

The award was announced at the Chamber’s monthly business lunch last Thursday at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

The senior housing community was nominated by both a business and an individual for the honor,

said Terry Moreman, the executive director of the Chamber.

A committee made up of a past winner, a Mercer Island resident, a board member and the chamber’s executive director choose the business to be honored.

Aljoya Mercer Island is a 112unit residential community for seniors with services and amenities not found in traditional retirement communities.

“The criteria (for the award) is how has the business made a significant impact on the economic vitality and/or how the business brought value and benefit to the community,” Moreman said. “In this case, one of the nominators mentioned that it brought new people to the community who are

A man followed a 22-year-old Island woman off a bus last Friday afternoon, claimed he had a gun and attempted to rob her. The woman struggled with the man, but was able to get away. With the help of witnesses and an alert bus driver, Mercer Island police made an arrest.

The 21-year-old suspect followed the woman off a Metro bus after 3:25 p.m. in the 8600 block of S.E. 44th Street on Friday, Dec. 2. The woman was going home.

Shortly after exiting the bus, the male approached the woman and demanded she give him her cell phone and wallet. He said that he didn’t want to hurt her, but claimed he had a gun and would shoot her if she did not comply.

Island said the most successful businesses are those that give back to the community. “We’ve really tried to make Aljoya part of the community,� Cole said. She said Aljoya has opened its doors to MIVAL, the Lion’s Club and other charitable organizations. Cole said she serves on the Giving from the Heart campaign, and Aljoya and Cole personally support Mercer Island Youth and Family Services. “Supporting services that helps them, helps everybody,� Cole said.

Aljoya wraps around a garden courtyard with a fire pit, barbecue patio and access to Mercer Island’s art park and trail system.

Amenities and services include a dining room, swimming pool and exercise room, salon and spa, various living and activity rooms, performing arts

center, business center, and arts and crafts studio. A health and wellness center is available to provide assisted living services.

Aljoya provides independent living, very basic assisted living services, full nursing care and end of life care.

Residents receive medical care in the privacy of their own apartment.

Aljoya Mercer Island is only three years old, and they are at 90 percent capacity, Cole said.

The Chamber solicits nominations in October and November, and announces the winner during the first lunch meeting in December.

This is the eighth year for the Business of the Year award.

When the woman did not comply with the suspect’s demands, the suspect grabbed the victim and attempted to reach into her jacket pockets. During the struggle, the victim fell to the ground. She unsuccessfully attempted to kick the suspect in the groin, but she was able to escape the scene and get home. The suspect fled north on 86th Avenue S.E. The victim was not hurt.

According to the Probable Cause statement, the man is six feet tall and weighs 205 pounds.

MIPD officers responded to the scene after receiving a call from the victim and an independent witness who saw the altercation occur. A K-9 search dog identified the suspect’s route. No guns were recovered from the suspect or anywhere along his route.

Police placed a call to Metro Transit and gave them a description of the suspect. Metro Transit then informed police that the suspect was on a bus still on Mercer Island, a short time later. Officers reached the bus and detained the suspect without incident.

According to documents provided by the prosecutor’s office, the suspect was located and arrested in the 9100 block of 42nd Street across from Mercer Island High School.

The victim and independent witness positively identified the suspect.

Two collateral witnesses who had seen the suspect in the area approximately two blocks from the incident location also identified the suspect, a Seattle resident.

He was booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of robbery, a felony.

The suspect was conditionally released from King County Jail the next day.

The King County Prosecutor actually asked to hold him on $15,000 bail, but Judge Veronica Alicia-Galvin released him on his own personal recognizance. The prosecutor’s office said they would make a decision on charges by Wednesday, after Reporter deadline. If charges are filed, the prosecutor will ask to take him back into custody.

New schools to cost $400 per sq. ft

It’s a scary thought, but a severe earthquake could occur at any time in the Puget Sound region. It has been 300 years since the last time that the area was struck by a subduction zone earthquake. Subduction is the process where one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate, sinking into the earth’s mantle, as the plates converge.

Engineer Jim Collins, with PCS Structural Solutions of Seattle, was tasked to evaluate Islander Middle School, all three elementary schools and the North Mercer properties for structural integrity in the event of an earthquake.

Island Park Elementary, Islander Middle School, Lakeridge Elementary and West Mercer Elementary were all remodeled in 1995, but the North Mercer buildings have not undergone a structural upgrade in over 50 years. Collins said it is unknown how well the walls are reinforced in the North Mercer buildings, and they are the only buildings with concrete roofs. “Changes to code are inevitable, but these North Mercer buildings were built to 1958 code,� Collins said.

The old North Mercer campus buildings are susceptible to collapse in an earthquake, but the other buildings were upgraded for seismic strength during the

remodeling.

In a MCE (maximum considered earthquake) seismic event, IMS and the three elementary schools wouldn’t collapse — the kids would get out, Collins concluded, but the buildings would be damaged beyond repair.

This study is just one more issue to be grappled with as the Mercer Island School District board of directors decides how to frame a bond issue to be placed before voters, perhaps as soon as April 2012.

Superintendent Gary Plano pointed out that since all the schools were remodeled at the same time, there would be no backup facility if indeed all the schools were damaged beyond repair.

The engineering report said the buildings, excluding the North Mercer campus, could survive another earthquake due to the 1995 remodeling. However, IMS and the elementary schools would be unsafe for students to return.

Dean Mack, the executive director of business services for the district, presented the cost per square foot for new schools, based on criteria proposed by the 21st Century FPC. Not taking in inflation, and including “soft costs� such as furnishings, fixtures,

playground equipment, permitting, etc., new elementary schools would cost $400 to $425 per square foot, with classrooms for 650 students and common space for 725 kids. Each school would cost $30 to $34 million.

A new middle school with classroom space for 1,100 students and common space for 1,200, would cost $394 to $421 per square foot — more cost efficient because of size, Mack said.

There are variables as well, such as whether to build the structures to serve as emergency shelters, have science labs, and preschool/ day care. A new middle school would cost about $67 to $75 million.

The final conundrum that the board discussed is building in place, vs. demolition and utilizing a “swing� school to house students while their particular school is being built. Island Park would most likely be set on a different area on its site. Since the new school would have two stories, it makes sense to move the footprint since the site is sloped, whereas the design could be similar to a daylight basement.

The enormous task of transporting 270 kids and all the related gear is underway, as the Mercer Island High School marching band prepares to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year’s Day. This is the third time that the band has been invited to march in the Rose Parade; last year, they marched in London’s New Year’s Parade. The last time

the band was in the Rose Parade was 2006, the first time in 52 years when it rained on the parade.

The trip to London was also impaired by weather — snow in that case, delaying flights, but they all managed to get there in time. This year is a much shorter flight.

Band director, Parker Bixby, said in 2006 the rain in Pasadena was caused by a tropical depression.

They were blasted with “firehouse� rain during the entire parade and many

mal spot on their sites, which would make them good candidates for building on site while students are still in the old school. But it also sounded like the board is still toying with the idea of a fourth elementary school, if a site could be found on the Island. “Let’s put the buildings on the best location on the sites if we can,� said Frank Morrison of the 21st Century Facilities Planning Committee. He said parking, access and fields need to be factored in, too.

Carrie George, who was also on the 21st CFPC, made a case to the board for urgency, hoping they move quickly so as to get a bond on the April ballot. To do so, the district would have to file by March 2. Mack said voter support decreases by 15 percent if the bond is put off until the August primary or November general election.

Board president Pat Braman said the board hopes to reach out to the public in February. Sixty percent voter approval is needed for a bond to pass.

Discussion on facilities will continue at the Dec. 15 regular board meeting.

He said they had the old wool uniforms then, which were so soaked the truck weighed thousands of pounds more on the return trip. The new uniforms are made from Dri-Weave, a quick-drying synthetic material.

The kids will fly out of Seattle on Dec. 28, returning Jan. 2. The instruments and uniforms were sent via UPS to London last year. This time, two parents, Bob Sims and Terry Coe, will be driving everything down.

“I volunteered many months ago when all the sub-committees were being

formed,” Sims said.

The two will be driving a 26-foot truck, towing an 18-foot-long trailer that the school owns. Sims said the trailer was retrofitted to carry the uniforms, while the truck will hold all the instruments, banners and miscellaneous gear. Sims said 1,400 cubic feet are required for the instruments. He and Coe will leave Dec. 26, allowing themselves enough time in case of bad road conditions.

The band will also march at Disneyland and participate in Band Fest at Pasadena Community College while they are in California. Band co-director Ryan Lane said Band Fest is not a competition; it is a festival.

“The bands get together and perform for each other,” Lane said.

Lane said the band didn’t do as much fundraising as in the past, but through a car wash, raffle and an event featuring some of the Harlem Globetrotters, they did raise about $5,000 to help out band members who needed scholarships, since the cost per student is $1,500.

“The kids have been working their tails off; it’s a huge honor,” Bixby said.

It’s “apples and oranges” he said, comparing this trip to the trip to London last year. Bixby said The Rose Parade officials are much more selective on which bands perform.

He said 16 bands were invited, representing every corner of the country, as well as bands from as far away as Beijing and Puerto Rico.

Bellevue Council should demand I-90 HOV lanes in Sound Transit agreement

s the Washington state Legislature struggles to find a way to fill a $750 million dollar gap in the coming biennium budget, we must consider stark choices.

The state has cut a good deal already. But it is not enough.

Governor Chris Gregoire, unencumbered by a political campaign for reelection, has taken the unpopular step of proposing a temporary half percent sales tax increase to make up $500 million of the shortfall. Gregoire hopes lawmakers will approve a referendum for the March ballot.

If approved, the tax would expire after three years. It would be directed toward education, with smaller amounts for public safety and social services.

The governor’s proposal came after she outlined more than 160 proposed budget cuts to fill the $750 million dollar shortfall. The cuts included eliminating state-subsidized health insurance for the working poor; reducing the K-12 school year by four days; and allowing early release of prisoners who are at low to moderate risk of reoffending. If the tax increase is approved, some of these monies would be restored.

Cue the screaming now. No new taxes! More taxes will hurt working families and stall economic growth! But let’s look at the numbers. Spending per household in Washington state is about $25,000. A half penny tax increase would mean another $125 in tax paid per household. Unacceptable? Maybe. Does the state need to cut more first before such an increase becomes palatable? Yes. But changes need to be made soon.

Let’s consider the consequences of more cuts to education. Some states have already cut the school week to four days instead of five or have shortened the school year. Do we want to go down that road? Colleges have also taken a huge hit, pushing a 44 percent increase in tuition costs on to state families here. More out-ofstate and international students, recruited for their non-resident tuition dollars, are taking the place of in-state students.

Clearly we need to see more savings before we vote. But we need to remain open to do what it takes to keep kids in school, children insured and bad guys in jail.

Sound Transit should use the Bellevue City Council agreement to quickly implement one East Link feature — adding HOV lanes to the outer edges of the I-90 bridge.

Prior to light rail construction, buses would continue to use centerbridge. However, instead of both lanes going the same direction in peak commute times, the roadway should be split into inbound and outbound lanes.

The combination of the added HOV lane and bus-only lane in each direction would dramatically reduce congestion, particularly for reverse commuters already facing serious delays. Other commuters would benefit because the added capacity could accommodate anticipated growth and increased traffic from 520 bridge construction disruptions and those avoiding tolls.

The early bridge modification has another potential advantage. Well before construction begins, ST can shut down the bridge center section for two to four weeks to demonstrate if the modified outer lanes will accommodate all cross-lake vehicular traffic.

If the temporary closure causes excessive congestion, the result could have East Link funds used for additional express bus routes on the center bridge and help fund the 520 rebuild and 405 improvements, reducing the need for toll revenue.

Forum: Fluoridated water is unsafe for babies In 2006 the CDC and ADA advised that infants should not consume fluoridated water. But public health agencies and water districts have failed to warn parents of this.

Mercer Island’s tap water — which comes from Seattle Public Utilities — contains around 200 times more fluoride than mother’s milk and is not safe for infants.

The water that Mercer Island buys from Seattle contains industrial waste fluo- Dr. Bill ride called Osmunson “silicofluo- DDS, MPH ride,” which contains arsenic and lead, and also leaches lead from pipes. Studies show that lead and fluoride both reduce IQ. A mother’s breast milk provides complete nutrition for babies, but is virtually fluoride free. A baby’s kidneys are only 20 percent developed and cannot excrete fluoride and lead well. As early as

eight weeks, most babies are consuming some formula, often made with tap water. Fluoride is unnecessary and causes harm.

Babies drink up to four times more liquids for their weight, as do adults, and ingest too much fluoride if fluoridated water is used for formula or drinking.

The FDA recognizes fluoride toxicity. For example, it requires that toothpaste labels recommend using only a pea-sized dab, and carry FDA warning statements “Do Not Swallow,” but if you do swallow, “Call Poison Control.” There is 0.25 mg of fluoride in a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste, which we should not swallow — the same as in one glass of fluoridated water.

The FDA also requires fluoride toothpaste to display “Drug Facts.” The Washington Board of Pharmacy defines fluoride for ingestion as a prescription drug. Not even a pharmacist can sell fluoride without a prescription.

Fire in kitchen causes $30,000 in damages to Island home Faulty wiring behind stove causes blaze

Mercer Island, Bellevue and Eastside Fire Departments responded to a fire at the residence of Harinderpal Hanspal at 4:23 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the 3400 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The fire started in the kitchen of the single-story house, in the wall behind the kitchen stove. It spread quickly within the wall into the garage. Hanspal was home at the time.

Firefighters contained the fire to the wall between the kitchen and garage, extinguishing it at 4:50 p.m.

the first floor and daylight basement. There were no injuries. The couple, their two children and a puppy are safe.

Hanspal and his family moved into the house in 2009. They did some remodeling in the kitchen.

A plumber had been at the home earlier in the day and had moved the stove away from the wall to do some work. The fire started after the worker left. Firefighters told Hanspal that the wiring in the 50-year-old house was not adequate and had not been modified correctly during subsequent remodeling projects.

Hanspal said that the inspection on his home when he bought it did not

reveal problems with the wiring. He also noted that the fire extinguisher that the family had on hand was not adequate. He is thankful that the family was not asleep at the time and that both he and his wife were home at the time. He praised the response by firefighters.

The first fire units arrived at the scene within four minutes of the dispatch. A total of 26 firefighters were at the scene, using eight fire apparatus. Firefighters had originally thought there was an attic over the garage and broke through a skylight over the garage, where the fire was burning below.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $30,000.

took a 30-year-old Mercer Island man into custody from Tukwila police at 9:16 a.m. on a misdemeanor warrant and booked him into the Issaquah Jail.

NOV. 20 PILE-UP ACCIDENT: A sedan

rear-ended a SUV stopped in northbound traffic at 7:50 a.m. in the 6700 block of

Island Crest Way. Another vehicle braked for the accident but could not stop in time and struck the sedan, pushing it into the SUV, which then struck a fourth vehicle.

All damages and statements matched, and three vehicles were towed. There were no injuries.

Gladys Lilia Edith Ross Kellegrew June 20, 1927 – November 16, 2011

Gladys was born in Vancouver, British Columbia to George and Olive Ross. In 1930, the family moved to Seattle and eventually settled near the Seattle Tennis Club where Gladys took tennis lessons. She went on to win the junior girls Seattle and Washington State tournaments. Gladys attended Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles to further her tennis skills. After high school, Gladys returned to Seattle and won the Washington State Women’s Tennis Championship.

Gladys worked as a stewardess and purser for Pan American Airways. She loved meeting passengers and stayed active in World Wings. Gladys retired from Pan Am when she married Bill Kellegrew in Seattle on April 9, 1960.They raised their family on the south end of Mercer Island where she continued to play tennis at STC and MICC. Both Bill and Glad enjoyed volunteering at Northwest Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Glad was generous and liked to give people gifts she made. She loved to see joy in other people’s faces. She was a great cook and liked standing out in a crowd. Gladys, the “Hat Lady”, made and wore hats for every occasion.

Gladys is survived by her sister Elaine; her children Marsh (Marcie), Sarah (Brenden) and Kevin; and her grandchildren Dale, Kelley, and Matthew.

Thomas Wilson Hensel Thomas Wilson “Tom” Hensel, 50, of Winnetka, IL, formerly of Mercer Island, WA, died on November 1, 2011 after being struck by an automobile. A funeral was held at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church and was followed by a reception at his home.

Born and raised in Summit, NJ, Tom graduated from Bowdoin College, having spent his senior year at the California Institute of Technology. He began his career as a pioneer in the medical technology industry, working as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, California.

Following an eight-year tenure at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington, he worked in finance as a senior analyst covering the software industry in the equity research departments of Furman Selz and Everen Securities. Upon his death, he was a private real estate investor.

He is survived by his wife, Ying; his children Catherine and Charlie; his parents Carolyn and John Hensel; his sisters Katherine Hensel (Fred Ost), Ann Beardsley, and Caroline Contiguglia (Carl); his mother-in-law Lau Saumin and father-in-law Kwok Chun Nang; his sister-in-law Angela Kwok (Frank Chau); and his nieces and nephews Carter and Caroline Beardsley, Emma and Courtney Contiguglia, and Vivien and Derek Chau.

that ran a stop sign without slowing down and arrested the driver, a 28-year-old Seattle woman, for DUI at 12:23 a.m. in the 7400 block of

westbound I-90. The woman said she had just left a bar and should not have been driving.

She failed standard sobriety tests and refused a PBT. ARREST: Police arrested a Federal Way man, 31, at 8:53 p.m. in the 8400 block of S.E. 26th Street after a license plate check showed he was driving with a suspended license. A marijuana odor was evident and the driver said he had some marijuana pipes that he had just smoked. He handed over the pipes, and was released at the MIPD. ARREST: Police stopped a vehicle associated with a $500 King County Sheriff’s Office warrant for third-degree theft and arrested the driver, a 45-year-old Seattle woman, at 7:58 p.m. in the 7600 block of S.E. 29th Street. Police transported the woman to the King County Jail, but she was declined for intake due to high blood pressure. She was taken to Harborview Hospital instead, and released.

BIKE THEFT: Someone stole a bicycle out of an apartment complex storage area in the 3200 block of Shorewood Drive sometime after Nov. 20. The bike had been locked with an independent locking device. Video surveillance was not available.

ARREST: Police arrested an Auburn man, 23, at 3:06 a.m. in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way on several misdemeanor warrants. The man gave a false name, which police discovered through a fingerprint check. He did not have a valid operator’s license, and his driving status had been suspended. He was booked into the King County Jail and cited for local charges.

NOV. 24 ARREST: Police arrested a 53-year-old Mercer Island man at 12:07 a.m. in the 7700 block of West Mercer Way for domestic violence and booked him into the King County Jail. The man assaulted his wife during an argument.

THEFT: Two men in their 20s stole a 12-pack of Bud Light beer cans from the gas station in the 2900 block of 78th Avenue S.E. after the sale period at 2:30 a.m. One suspect threw $13.25 into the cash register after being refused the sale, then left the store. Police did not locate the suspects, who initially bought a pack of cigarettes from the gas station.

James A. Nussbaum

March 10, 1923 – November 24, 2011 James (Jim) Alfred Nussbaum was born March 10, 1923 in Seattle, Washington to Edward (Ted) Michael Nussbaum and Molly (Levy) Nussbaum. Jim graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, and joined the Boy Scouts of America as a young boy. He remained active in Scouting his entire life, serving on the Eagle Scout Board of Review and establishing a museum at Camp Parsons on the Olympic Peninsula that chronicles the history of Camp Parsons and Scouting.

During WWII Jim joined the 10th Mountain Division and was sent to Camp Hale in Colorado. He taught mountain combat in West Virginia for two years before being shipped to Mount Belvedere in the Piedmont region of the Italian Alps. At one point a German machine gunner was decimating Jim’s unit, Jim thought he could climb out of the foxhole and shoot the gunner, but as he climbed out he was shot in the back for which he received a Purple Heart.

Back at home in Seattle, Jim enrolled in the Pacific Northwest School of Photography, and then embarked on a successful commercial photography business before settling down and raising a family. He worked for many years at Steinberg Brothers Manufacturing. After retirement Jim became quite involved with the 10th Mountain Alumni Association. He traveled back to Italy with this group on three separate occasions, continued to hike and ski with them, and became their designated photographer.

Jim is survived by his daughters Elaine Susan Nussbaum of Scappose, Oregon, and Jan Nussbaum of the San Francisco Bay area; son Professor E. Michael Nussbaum of Las Vegas, and niece Teddi Simons of Seattle. A retrospective of his photography will be on display later this month at his former residence, Aljoya: 2430 76th Ave SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040. Two homes burglarized week after Thanksgiving Police responded to a residential burglary in the 2400 block of 67th Avenue S.E. No one was home when the burglary occurred between 4:30 and 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26. $80 in cash was stolen along with a gold and sapphire graduation ring, gold Celtic inscribed cross, Swiss Army knife, laptop and 42-inch TV. Fingerprints were lifted from a master bedroom window casing.

A residence was also burglarized in the 6000 block of 90th Avenue S.E. between 1 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Burglars entered the house through a garage access door and ransacked the home, stealing a flat screen TV, laptop, and Cadillac key fob and key. Fingerprints were lifted from liquor bottles and a living room liquor cabinet. Talent leads Island gymnasts

After breaking into the postseason last winter, the Mercer Island gymnastics team returns with even more talent than their predecessors.

“They are showing more skills earlier than they did last year,” said longtime head coach Lenny Lewis. “For this first competition, more girls are eligible this year than last year by a long shot. Last year we might have an average five or six girls per event ready to go. This year so far, we’ve prepped for two events.

The first two events have 16 or 17 girls ready.”

Led by three senior captains, the team looks to capi-

talize on that talent and go farther.

“We’re deeper than we were last year,” said Lewis.

“Last year we had four or five who were our core, but we have some (now) who are further down the line with their skills.”

Captain Kari Johnson agreed, saying the team started off the year strong and with a lot of depth.

Lewis said he expects the Islanders to once again be a force on the floor, while the captains added vault to the list.

“We have girls who have a lot of gymnastics experience,” said captain Kelly Grady.

Lewis said the first weeks of practice have included the

usuals, but with one exception. The team wanted to condition more.

“They wanted to condition more this year, so I’m happy with that,” said the coach.

“We started off with conditioning because then the skills come a lot easier,” said captain Sarah Pangallo.

Thanks to two new assistant coaches, Megan Addis and Islander alum Olivia Harvey, the team has been able to accomplish more earlier.

“We’re working on compulsory routines for the freshmen. Last year we didn’t have it ready for them, but we have two new assistant

Wrestlers looking to top last winter

It’s going to be tough for the Islanders to top last year.

The best finish in recent program history, state placements and KingCo and district titles will be on the to-do list.

But the Mercer Island wrestlers are game to give it a try.

“We haven’t talked about specific goals, but I think it’s always a goal to improve on the previous year. That would be hard to do since ninth at state is our best finish in 20 years. But we’d like to stay at that state caliber, where as a team we’re recognized as a strong program,” said returning head coach

Creighton Laughary.

The team has already made a name for itself in the league, after winning two straight KingCo titles, as well as picking up the district win last year.

“We would also like to go for the first ‘three-peat’ in school history with the KingCo championship, but we recognize that that’s going to be difficult,” said the coach. “The league is getting tougher. Bellevue’s competitive, Mount Si has a strong team with a lot of experience. Liberty has a state champ on their lineup.

We have that as our goal, even though it’s going to be tough.”

The team, while younger,

has several returners with state experience and a big crop of freshmen thanks to a strong program at Islander Middle School.

“We have a younger team; things kind of go in cycles,” said Laughary. “We graduated a group of really strong seniors, and the result of them being strong guys and in the varsity line up for a couple years persuaded some of the kids.”

Two returning seniors who have been in the thick of the state competition are Phil Frazier and Blake Johnson.

“We have a lot of freshmen who are working hard,” said Johnson of the season so far. “We’re working on keeping our tempo up in practice.”

Frazier, who was injured at the end of the football season, hasn’t been able to hit the mats for wrestling yet.

“My focus has been on conditioning,” he said. “I have a high tempo style.”

He added now that he’s wrestling in the 182-weight

class, it will be easier for him to make weight and focus on other things.

Laughary said the team has spent the first week or so of practice on technique. “ We ’ r e working on being aggressive on our feet,” he said. “One our Blake Johnson, of MIHS wrestler a s s i s t a n t coaches, Adrian Diaz, is a Seattle police officer and an alum.

He’s really brought in a good technique, and since he’s been here, we’ve been much stronger on our feet in the way we attack our opponents — instead of

having a defensive style or a cautious style, and it can get us into trouble, but I think it’s an exciting kind of wrestling and the guys like it.”

The team began its campaign last week with a double dual meet against Everett and Shorewood, top of the top teams in the state last year.

“Because we go north for our region, we really haven’t bumped into them too often during the season, so it’ll be a good early measuring stick,” said Laughary.

The Islanders will travel to Sammamish on Thursday, Dec. 8, for a meet against the Totems starting at 7:30 p.m. The team then hosts a meet against Interlake on Dec. 15.

Mount Si, Lewis said the team hasn’t spent much time discussing their goals.

“The only goal we’ve actually talked about is trying to make the postseason, past KingCo. That’s the big thing,” said the coach.

For Pangallo, she wanted to work on getting up to all around, while Johnson wants to work on a new skill for each event. Overall, they hope the team has a fun season, working together.

The team will compete against Interlake, Lake Washington and Liberty in the first home meet of the season on Dec. 8 at MIHS starting at 7 p.m. The team

will take on Mount Si, Liberty and Sammamish on Dec. 17 in another home meet. It is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

We beat them in the postseason (last year), but they have a little more talent coming in, or a higher level of talent. Three or four girls can’t win a meet, and I think they are a little deeper.”

Napa Valley winery celebrates Island roots You know when you have known someone for a long time, but you cannot remember when you met?

That is the case with Chris Howell, winemaker for Cain Vineyard and Winery. Actually, I think I met Howell’s mom, Barbara, before I met him.

Howell is among the seven winemakers and/or winery owners who grew up on Mercer Island. He is not only the most veteran winemaker, but he is also the only non-Washington winemaker. When Howell followed his winemaking star, Washington’s wine industry was still a fledgling. Howell has been Napa Valley’s Cain winemaker for over 20 years.

Howell’s father worked for Boeing and brought back some of the first vintages of Freemark Abbey and Robert Mondavi from California in the mid ’60s.

Lake confirmed Howell's strong desire to study in France. While in France, Howell took the advice of his professors at Ecole Nationale Superiure Agronomique in Montpellier, who recommended that he study viticulture along with winemaking. He was then granted a year-long internship at Mouton Rothschild, where he experienced every aspect of the vineyard, cellar and laboratory. At the same time, he studied winetasting at the Institut d’Oenologie in Bordeaux.

“All of this was a great start, but in truth, just a beginning,” Howell said. “I have been lucky to work in a number of different vineyards and wineries here in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. I even had a harvest in 1985 with E.B. Foote Winery in Seattle.”

In 1980, Jerry and Joyce Cain purchased 550 acres on Spring Mountain. Even though they have retired, their partners, Jim and Nancy Meadlock, have carried on their dream of a mountain vineyard dedicated to the classical blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. The fruit of this vineyard would inspire the creation of Cain Five.

The “five” in the name Cain Five refers to the five grapes: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and malice, which are used in the Bordeaux area of France. Howell strives to use only grapes from Cain vineyards for Cain Five so that “estate-bottled” can be proudly heralded on its label.

Cain Concept and Cain Cuvee can utilize the same five grapes, but Howell has winemaker’s choice here.

The current Cain Concept is 2007 and carries the additional designation of “Benchland,” noting that the grapes come mostly from the valley floor. It has four grapes: primarily cabernet sauvignon plus merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot.

Cain Cuvee is softer, with a majority of merlot and an addition of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot, also mostly from the valley floor. It is not only a blend of four grapes, but it is also a blend of two years, utilizing the 2006 and 2007 vintages.

Even being so far away from the valley floor, Cain Mountain Vineyard had to be replanted using phylloxera — resistant rootstock

in 1992. When I visited Napa about 10 years ago, the valley was marked by piles of vines ready to be burned or scorched areas where the vines had already been burned. Phylloxera is an insect closely related to the aphid that feeds on leaves and roots of wine vines. When I was visiting Cain Vineyard during the height of the infestation, I stayed in the car so no possibly contaminated shoes could taint the vineyard soil. Only certain vehicles were allowed into the vineyards so that no tires could carry the infection. By the time a vineyard shows infestation, it is too late and the notorious insect is off destroying nearby vineyards. Robert Mondavi, owner of R o b e r t Mondavi Winery, used NASA satellite photos that detected heat variances.

If a vineyard showed higher heat, Mondavi tore it out immediately, hoping to keep the spread of phylloxera under control.

I have been especially interested in how wineries have been the leaders in “green” practices. Cain is a member of the Napa Green Land Program and

Island author inspires others with ‘Character Triangle’

Lorne Rubis defines highly successful people as those who work with character, in turn inspiring other people. This applies not only to one’s work, but to their personal life.

Rubis is the CEO of Ryzex, an international mobile technology solutions company based in Bellingham. He has been at Ryzex for eight years, but has 40 years of leadership skills, which got him to thinking about his first book, “The Character Triangle,” which was released Nov. 1.

It took him three years to write the book, but Rubis has created a trilogy of values that include accountability, respect (for yourself and others), and abundance as a system for successful living, both professionally and personally.

“It involves thinking and acting with intent, based on three values that are uniquely important on their own and become even more powerful when connected,” Rubis said.

Rubis began his career

life as a teacher and coach.

He was profoundly moved by that career and the impact he had on his students.

“The school had nothing, no uniforms, nothing,” he said.

He was teaching English and coaching, and he and his team made the decision they were going to win.

“We didn’t complain a b o u t the lack of what we had; we just started to b elie ve,” he said.

T h e Lorne Rubis values in the book started then. There was a system, he said — a framework on how they worked together.

Rubis moved on to the University of Oregon to get his graduate degree. Over his 40 years of working, he did his own qualitative research on determining the values he observed in people.

“Accountability, respect and abundance came to

the front of the line,” Rubis said. “I felt that I needed to shine a light on the importance of these values as a system for driving success.

At the same time, when as an executive I sent out employee satisfaction surveys, I realized that people and organizations showed deficiencies in the understanding and application of these values. These two forces joined to birth the character triangle.”

Rubis said he believes people have much more control of their ability to influence their success in work and life than they think.

With regard to accountability, he said rather than play the blame game, ask what you can do to make a difference. Instead of trying to defend yourself, which he said is not productive, ask yourself what you can do to make others around you more successful as well.

“When you come from a place of listening to that person and understanding, the relationship becomes more problem-solving and productive,” he said. “A lot

of people are disrespectful and don’t even realize it. Or, we’re listening, but we’re not really present.”

In this day of increasing rudeness, he recommends that folks make a point to really dig deep to see if they are truly being respectful. One good example of disrespect, he said, is email. We’ve all received them — with all caps, as though we are being screamed at. Then, he said, self-accountability comes into play.

When Rubis speaks of abundance, he’s not talking about wealth. He is talking about generosity of spirit. He said the best leaders and colleagues are enormously abundant with their time, training and genuinely interested in learning about you, and how to help you be more successful.

“Most of us could benefit from more resources, but people with abundance come from a perspective of ‘I have what I need, not what I lack’ — the people who make the best of what they’ve got,” he said.

Where scarcity comes in, people tend to diminish those who have more than them, Rubis said.

“Those who rise to another level of contribution are naturally focused on being generous-spirited,” he said. “If you’re an abundant person, you

He is trying to get all of his 250 employees to think this way. He has given a copy of his book to all of them, to make his character triangle the heart of who they are.

“When you look behind these attributes, qualitatively I have lots of evidence behind this,” Rubis said.

Rubis’ ideal world is that his character triangle will “catch like lightening in a bottle.”

“There’s so much blaming, so much disrespect and so much lack; that’s what causes alienation between people,” he said.

“This is tougher; it takes an effort.”

He said applying the character triangle needs to be based on the belief that each of these values is worthy of daily application; not just unilaterally, but as a connected trinity.

With all these accolades and experience under his belt, Howell is very humble. He is conscientious and attentive in his winemaking; however, his everyday persona is quiet and unassuming. He sums up his journey thus far: “All steps along a path which has no end in sight,� he mused. “My wife Katie and I continue down the same path. I am so lucky.�

Artisan bake-at-home pizza has arrived in downtown Mercer Island. Tucked into a cozy space in Tabit Village Square, ‘Zaw Pizza offers handcrafted pizzas and salads with organic ingredients.

There are now five restaurants offering pizza on the Island.

Zaw is a small chain begun by two Canadian men. The name “zaw is slang for pizza in Canada,� according to shop manager Michel DeBange.

Zaw has participated in the Mercer Island Farmers Market.

Zaw’s menu offers the option of gluten-free, whole wheat or traditional white crusts with selections ranging from an Arugula Patch pizza to Roasted Veg Head, to My Big Fat Greek Pizza.
