The case of missing 2-year-old Sky Metalwala has baffled authorities for weeks.

Investigators have not ruled out any possible theories as to what happened to the boy, despite over 1,000 tips from the public and expanding the search.

This is the first of a two-part series that examines the parents’ combative marriage and allegations against each other.

MARITAL CONFLICT Domestic violence has allegedly followed Biryukova, who was born in Russia and became a U.S. citizen in 1999.

She described in court documents daily beatings from her parents during much of her childhood. She felt like she could not do anything right, as she was also taken for a variation of electroconvulsive shock treatment in Russia for punitive reasons, according to court records.

The City of Redmond may be looking for taxpayer help in 2012 to help fund parks and transportation projects. But the big question is: Will residents be in the giving mood?

City officials are considering a funding option to put a capital improvement bond for parks and transportation projects on the November 2012 ballot.

A voter-approved bond would allow the city to fill in the gaps of current projects and to address some of its big-ticket capital projects sooner than later, according to city officials.

The size and scope of a possible bond measure has yet to be determined, according to Redmond Mayor John Marchione.

“We have 6-year and 20-year capital plans for all city functions,” Marchione said. “We use a variety of tax sources to fund these plans. Adding a voterapproved bond issue will allow us to tackle some larger projects sooner. The question for the community is: Is now the time?”

The city also has the option of adding a new vehicle license tab fee to help fund transportation projects, according to the city’s transportation services manager Don Cairns. This fee would be in addition to the $20 car tab fee recently approved by King County Council to fund Metro Transit services, along with the other fees on your car-tab bill. A city vehicle tab fee is not being explored as a funding option

at this time, but it is something the city may consider in the future, the mayor said.

But before any final decisions are made, residents will have a chance to voice their opinion. The City Council recently authorized an outside firm to conduct a survey of 400 registered Redmond voters sometime in mid-to-late January.

The automated phone survey will ask residents, among other questions, what city projects they would like to see funded.

The survey will also gauge if voters would approve a possible tax increase or vehicle license tab fee from the city to help fund those projects,

www.redmond-reporter.com according to Cairns. The purpose of the survey is to help city officials “gauge voters support for accelerating the construction of parks and/or transportation projects,� Marchione said.

City staff will report the results of the survey to the Council in February, according to the mayor.

From there, the Council will “use the survey data and other inputs to decide if there is enough support to go to voters in 2012 and for what specific projects,�

Marchione said.

There are many current and future projects both for parks and transportation that need funding, but the specific list has not been narrowed down yet, Marchione said.

PARKS On the parks and recreation side of things, the Redmond Pool, along with the teen, senior and community centers are outdated and will need to be renovated, expanded or rebuilt as growth continues in the city, many city officials have pointed out. “There are a lot of options out there for re-investment in the system,� said Craig Larsen, the city’s director of parks and recreation. “Part of the point of doing this survey is that we don’t have all of the answers. We want to be responsive to what the public wants to see.�

Larsen encouraged all residents who do get a phone call regarding the

survey take the time to answer all the questions.

The Parks and Trails Commission has spent the last six months reaching out to community groups to gauge interest on certain projects. There was a wide range of what people wanted from adding new neighborhood parks and community trails to building a central indoor recreation facility and aquatic center.

Parks and Trails commissioners met with city council members at Tuesday’s study session to outline the scope of residents’ wants and needs, along with the funding challenge city officials face.

of the parks and trails commission, told the Council that the commission understands that the wish list of projects is greater than the money available. She went onto say that’s why the survey is so important. She said the survey results will allow city staff to prioritize those projects and create a responsible, sustainable funding package to present to voters.

Everyone at the table during Tuesday’s meeting agreed the key to getting voters to approve a funding package will be narrowing the plan down to specific projects and showing how it will benefit voters. “Every facility we have is bursting at the seams

because there is so much interest and demand,â€? Bourguignon said after Tuesday’s meeting. “The real challenge is how we prepare for the next generation. ‌ It’s about making wise investments for the future and not resting on our laurels. We really need to keep investing.â€?

TRANSPORTATION Just like parks, there are many transportation needs that need to be addressed as the city continues to grow, according to Cairns.

As of right now, Cairns said the top three priority transportation projects are completing the conversion of the Redmond Way and Cleveland Street from one-way to twoway streets, improving and developing Northeast 116th Street in north Redmond and building an offramp from State Route 520 to 152nd Avenue Northeast. “It’s clearly a difficult time,â€? Cairns said of asking voters to approve a bond measure. “The needs are there in both parks and transportation. It’s not just what are we going to do the next two or three years, but also the next 20 years. ‌ We need to have a strategy that deals with growth over time. Right now, we are trying to gauge when would be the right time (for a voterapproved funding measure) and how much to ask for.â€?

Eastlake High School student and Redmond resident Trisha Bhaumik has been selected as one of six young people on the national AT&T Youth Advisory panel to help create educational materials for the public for the “It Can Wait” campaign.

The campaign focuses on the dangers of texting while driving and Bhaumik, 16, helped develop the materials and messages to be Trisha Bhaumik used by schools, community organizations, parents and others.

“One of the contributions that I made was to offer up the idea of having assemblies at school that simulate how dangerous it is to text and drive,” she said in a press release. “The example I came up with was having kids try to text a message on their phones while riding a tricycle through an obstacle course.”

Bhaumik also said providing personal stories groups could share was also important.

“People will only realize the dangers of texting while driving after they hear real-life stories,” she explained. “On almost every page of the ‘It Can Wait’ campaign website, it shows a link for ‘The Last Text,’ a movie which interview(ed) people who have been affected by someone’s choice to text while driving. I think that this is a great idea because it’s another way to introduce students to the subject of not texting while driving and sends a message that pertains to adults as well.”

Couple had troubled past, according to court documents [ COUPLE from page 1] documents illustrate Biryukova and Solomon’s financial and marital struggles.

The couple met in 1997 when Biryukova, 15, a Bellevue High School sophomore, was invited to a party by Solomon, 21. The couple’s romantic relationship began shortly after and they separated in March of 2010.

She told Stephen J. Cummings, a licensed clinical psychologist in Seattle, that soon after she met Solomon, she learned he was “very controlling, declared himself to be a Christ-like figure who had great persuasive skills due to his charisma. An Julia Biryukova emotional abuse pattern insidiously set in whereby Julia gradually became dependent upon Solomon for her very identity and self esteem,” the court documents continue.

A Kirkland police report showed a possible beginning to conflict as early as 1999.

Officers were called to a gas station in response to a couple arguing loudly.

The report states that the boyfriend and girlfriend were arguing about where to go that night, but the name of the man claiming to be Biryukova’s boyfriend is Solomon’s brother, Sulaiman.

But Biryukova states in court documents that she has been with only

Biryukova began working at Solomon’s family business, Kings Street Kafe in Pioneer Square. By the time she graduated from high school, they purchased a $265,000 Bellevue condo and moved in together.

At first, the couple was passionate about running their business. They enjoyed yoga, kickboxing, jogging at the Bellevue Park, movies, cooking, spending time with friends and each other, according to court documents.

But the nature of the relationship changed in 2003, as the couple was seemingly forced to get married.

Testimony in court documents states the couple married on Feb. 10 2003 in Solomon’s mother’s kitchen after Biryukova was approached with an ultimatum - marry Solomon or never see him again after his deportation to Pakistan.

It is unclear why Solomon faced

deportation.

Biryukova states in court documents that she hid her reason for marrying Solomon from her parents until 2010.

The couple’s financial woes, which contributed to their separation, began in 2005-2006 “as a competitor with a deli moved in next door to us, causing real economic loss from our anticipated and previously received income average. Subsequently, with the economic downturn, business became even slower,” Solomon testified.

But that did not stop the couple from purchasing an $860,000 home in Kirkland in 2008, along with the mortgage payments for the Bellevue condo.

Biryukova has also apparently called into question her ex-husband’s involvement in their son’s disappearance.

Last week, ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) claimed to have corresponded with someone using Biryukova’s e-mail. It has not been confirmed that the e-mail response to GMA was from Biryukova, a family member or if the e-mail was hacked.

But the respondent directly accuses her ex-husband, Solomon Metalwala, of being involved in the boy’s disappearance. “My former husband is a sadistic Muslim Pakistani,” the respondent wrote to GMA’s Neil Karlinksky. “No one has any idea. This is all too difficult.”

However, this response contradicts the couple’s past, as seen through court documents.

CONVERTED CHRISTIAN Solomon’s conversion to Christianity is a point of conflict in the deterioration of their marriage, according to court documents.

Biryukova claims that Solomon became a born-again Christian in 2005 and that she felt his family resented her for his conversion, the documents continue.

Parishioners at City Church in Kirkland, where the couple began attending in 2005, did not question his faith.

“They have been members of the church,” said Troy Anderson, associate pastor and general counsel.

“And some of our members have reached out to them.”

The City Church community held a special prayer on Nov. 9 for the missing 2-year-old Redmond boy.

Anderson said the couple’s kids attended sunday school at the church.

The couple also attended divorcecare meetings at the church, according to court documents.

A member of City Church also played a big part in attempting to mediate conflict between the couple and transferring the children from one party to the other during a bitter custody fight. That fight included allegations against each other that Biryukova suffered from psychiatric issues and that Solomon was abusive.

Speak out to save Overlake trees One thousand trees are about to fall in our community.

All we need to do for this to happen is to keep quiet. Sustainable Redmond, a grass-roots citizens’ action group focused on environmental sustainability, is asking that concerned citizens speak up now to persuade the Redmond City Council to consider better, more forest-friendly options in the impending redevelopment of the Overlake Group Health site.

The developer of the 28-acre site has proposed a high-density housing and retail shopping complex which will include removing all 1,050 trees currently on the site, and with them as many as 120 40-year-old landmark trees. Public awareness and input is extremely important for alternative plans to be requested by the City Council.

Near the planned terminus of the future Eastside Light Rail line, this project stands to become a model for future similar developments on the Eastside. The location of housing and retail near the light rail station to reduce transportation miles is a solid sustainable feature of the plan, but other aspects of this development raise concerns.

A distinctive feature of the soonto-be-demolished Group Health facility is the presence of stands of native woodland, a rarity in that highly developed area. Situated between 152nd and 156th Avenues Northeast on either side of Northeast 28th St, current plans call for leveling the existing structures, tearing up the asphalt parking

areas, and removing all vegetation including all trees, some with diameters exceeding four feet.

Redmond’s city code states that “In all new developments including additions to existing non-single family buildings and parking areas, a minimum of 35 percent of all significant trees shall be retained.”

(RZC 21.72.060). Exceptions can be requested, and the current proposal presented to City Council is to allow an exception that all trees can be removed, i.e. zero percent retained.

Sustainable Redmond is proposing that the city not grant an exception in this case, given that this area is quite unique in that it is the only large stand of trees remaining in the Overlake area, and that at least two stands of existing trees be retained.

Please join us at the Council meeting on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. to help save some of this important woodland area.

Maybe they should also send some funds to “Alcoholics Anonymous?” Because of cheap liquor and the increase of outlets selling booze from 328 to 1,428 I am sure “AA” membership will increase.

And to voters who approved the measure: Next time you see someone in the gutter from drinking too

much low-priced, easy-to-obtain alcohol, please bend over and give them a dime or two. After all, look at all the money you saved on your last liquor purchase.

Eyman loves to create civic chaos I think EXTORTION best describes Tim Eyman’s continued pursuit of his lawsuit against the City of Redmond, and here’s why.

The framers of our national Constitution struggled mightily with how to construct a government that would balance power among competing factions to ensure both “liberty and justice for all.” The result was that we pledge our allegiance to a republic, not to a democracy.

Nonetheless, Washington is among the states whose constitution allows citizens to use the initiative process as oversight of our legislature; used properly, initiatives enhance both liberty and justice.

Certainly, citizen petitions can play an important advisory role in local governments. They put local councils on notice when a decision runs contrary to citizens’ wishes.

Councils ignore such advice at their own peril; they do have to answer to voters at two and four year intervals.

However, using initiatives in local jurisdictions would cause civic chaos. Trivial lawsuits would rise to a whole new level. Any group of disaffected fanatics could hold cities hostage. If repeatedly forced to pay either the costs of special elections or the costs of lawsuits, local decision making would be paralyzed and budgets bankrupted.

Four years ago Redmond voters got rid of an administration that was contentious, capricious, autocratic and fiscally erratic. Then candidates Mayor John Marchione, along with Councilmembers David Carson, Hank Myers and Hank Margeson ran for election on a platform to stabilize and professionalize Redmond city government and to make it more responsive to its citizens. They have more than delivered on their promises, and except for the retiring Council president Richard Cole, were reelected in last week’s vote.

As a “hired gun,” Eyman’s paydays come from creating and encouraging conflicts, not from finding solutions—extending the initiative process to local jurisdictions would make him a wealthy man at the expense of the rest of us.

Eyman doesn’t care that Redmond need not raise revenue from ticket fines, because we now have a transparent, priority-based budget process that puts our Department of Public Safety first. He doesn’t care that at Council direction, our budget is reviewed monthly and that city expenditures are currently five-plus percent below budget.

Eyman doesn’t care that the City Council voted to cancel the contract for red light cameras; he doesn’t care that the 6,000 signatures, indeed, played a role in their decision.

Eyman only wants what pays him first, which is conflict. To those who would employ his assistance: Buyer beware.

Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Redmond Lights celebration will be from 4 to 8 p.m. and take place at Redmond City Hall campus at 15670 N.E. 85th St., Redmond Town Center (RTC), located at 7525 166th Ave. N.E., as well as Bear Creek Meadow next to the town center. Luke McRedmond Park at 15811 Redmond Way will also play host to activities.

Returning favorites include an expanded hot air balloon glow at the park and meadow from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. (weather permitting) and a bigger Candy Cane Hunt at City Hall. The hunt will be from 4 to 4:45 p.m. and has expanded to include the first 400 3-10 year olds who register.

The Chili Cook-Off is back, but has moved to RTC. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s competition will include teams representing Redmondâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fire and police departments and City Council like last year, but has expanded to include teams from local businesses as well. Mattâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rotisseries & Oyster Lounge and Taste of Amazing will also be competing. The competition

will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and offer people free samples, while supplies last.

Music and entertainment at City Hall will feature the Redmond Chorale, Northwest Boychoir and Gothard Sisters on the main stage at City Hall, while the town center will feature the tunes of â&#x20AC;&#x153;kindieâ&#x20AC;? rock band The Not-Its! and Crème Tangerine, a local Beatles cover band.

Together Center looking to fill empty space Human services campus undergoes changes after departure of Hopelink, arrival of LWSD Transition Academy LWSD is also saving money.

For the first time since it opened in 1990, the Together Center in downtown Redmond is in search of tenants to occupy a large space on its three-building campus at 16225 N.E. 87th St. The multi-tenant nonprofit center has about 7,200 square feet available, which was previously occupied by Hopelink. Together Center Executive Director Pam Mauk said they have had smaller spaces open in the past, but this is the first time they’ve had an opening of this size.

“It hasn’t happened in our 20 years,” she said.

The Together Center had been home to Hopelink’s administrative offices and Redmond Emergency Services Center — including a food bank — until the human services agency moved its operations elsewhere. Administrative offices vacated at the end of July and relocated to 10675 Willows Rd. N.E., Building B, Suite 275, while the emergency services center moved to 16725 Cleveland St. in early October.

Mauk said they were not happy that Hopelink and the food bank moved, “but they really needed more space … We are sorry they are off our campus.” She added that the Together Center will still partner and work with Hopelink and the food bank.

The space breakdown includes a 6,678 square-foot space that was previously the food bank and other office space as well as a smaller 530 square-foot office space that had been Hopelink’s human resources office.

MOVING AND EXPANDING FROM WITHIN Mauk said these openings have prompted potential movement among the center’s 18 or so agencies, some of which would like to expand or move locations within the center, but there is still space for more tenants. She said about half of the former food bank space may become occupied by current tenants.

ADDRESSING A VARIETY OF NEEDS

The Together Center in downtown Redmond currently has about 7,200 square feet available for new tenants. Executive Director Pam Mauk said this is the first time they have had such a large amount of space available. The suites were previously occupied by Hopelink. Mauk said most of these potential moves are still in the discussion stage and nothing has been finalized.

HealthPoint Community Health Centers, an agency that provides medical and dental care for patients throughout King County who are uninsured or uninsured at a reduced rate, currently has medical and dental clinics onsite and is one agency that would like to expand.

Marketing and community relations manager Diana Olsen said their medical clinic currently occupies about 4,900 square feet and they would like to add six exam rooms for total of about 8,200 square feet. This would allow HealthPoint to see 2,000 more patients per year.

The agency’s dental clinic currently occupies about 2,400 square feet and Olsen said they hope to add two dental chairs for one new dental hygienist and dental assistant for an additional 500 square feet. This expansion would also prompt an office reconfiguration to make it more user friendly and would result in 1,100 new patients.

“Our continued day-to-day

challenge is access … It can be difficult for people with little or no resources to see a doctor,” she said. “Our phone lines, they’re ringing off the hook.”

The Together Center will also take over about 270 square feet of newly available space to expand its “front-door” services, but Mauk said this is not part of the 7,200 square feet still available.

She added that the center’s expansion will address what they think the front lobby needs such as more private cubicles for the center’s free public phones, interpreter services, homeless advocates and public health representatives.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK One of Hopelink’s old administrative offices already has a new tenant.

The Lake Washington School District’s (LWSD) Transition Academy moved into the agency’s former finance office — which is 1,568 square feet but not part of the space that is still available — when it was vacated last summer.

The school is a communitybased program for young adults 18-21 with developmental disabilities and helps prepare them for life. The Transition Academy was

previously located on Cleveland Street in downtown Redmond and coordinator Mark Tornquist said with student safety and security a top priority for them, being on a busy street was a great concern.

Their new location is more ideal as it does not have as much traffic, he explained.

This is the first time the Together Center has had a school on its campus and Tornquist said they have been welcomed with open arms even though they are not a nonprofit like the other agencies.

“We’re a lot like neighbors,” he said. “That’s the part I really like.”

Tornquist added that they are looking into the process of becoming a nonprofit.

Since the students arrived on campus this fall, they have pitched in and helped throughout the center with tasks such as maintaing onsite kiosks and conference rooms, shredding documents (which would cost other agencies time and staff resources) and directing clients around the center.

In return, the students receive volunteer and internship hours they can use when creating a resume for potential employers.

Additionally, Tornquist said their rent is below the market rate so

“I think the name says it all: together,” he said.

A big part of this community is helping each other and Tornquist said having so many resources in one area has been beneficial. He said one of his students is even receiving services from another agency now as it is more conveniently located than where she was previously going.

Olsen agreed that working with other community partners is very important. She said one of HealthPoint’s goals is to provide comprehensive services to their patients and being part of the Together Center helps immensely.

A one-stop center for services is convenient for people who may not have the time or transportation to go around to different locations for different services.

“I feel confident in saying (being at the Together Center is) a lifesaver for some of our patients,” she said.

While the campus offers a number of services, Mauk said they would like to offer as many direct services as possible — rather than have space occupied by administrative offices — and there are some areas in which they are lacking.

When they learned Hopelink was leaving, she said they considered a homeless shelter, but they quickly realized this was not a feasible option.

Together Center staff conducted a study and spoke with about 20 nonprofits and agencies in the community to see what needed to be addressed. Mauk said items at the top of the list include legal services, job readiness, elderly care, drop-in child care and immigrant and refugee resources.

“We’re optimistic that we’ll find a real good fit,” Mauk said.

“Go ahead and take our word for it... we love what we do.”

GETTING A GRIP ON ART

Sensory art class encourages toddlers to get messy, creative plenty of art supplies at home but I’m always a little more cautious about making a giant mess in the living room.”

While parents can participate, Buckmaster-Ross says it’s important that the kids explore at their own pace.

“Everything I lay out for the children to do is something they can do on their own,” she said. “In fact, I have to slap parents’ hands and say ‘Don’t do that, that’s their artwork,’” said Buckmaster-Ross. “[With] a 12-month-old, even, I show them the paintbrush once and brush across the paper and it’s like it connects and they get it right away.”

Carvalho appreciates Buckmaster-Ross’s handsoff approach.

“Matías here was stuck a little bit at first, not knowing quite how to get into things.

She brought some of the paint over to him and that was good enough and that seemed to stimulate him to get started,” said Carvalho.

“So I think she’s good about just kind of watching and seeing what people need but otherwise being in the background and letting the kids take the lead.”

wice a week Meagan Buckmaster-Ross covers the basement floor of her studio at Orange Blossom Society with cloth and paper to create a barrier against the debris splattered by her sensory art students. She then leads youngsters ages 1 to 3 on epic journeys through their five senses using anything from paint and paper to pumpkin guts and goo.

“In the sensory, it’s an all-body experience,” said managing director Sharman Ghio.

Orange Blossom Society is an enrichment center for preschool education located in downtown Redmond in a refurbished Craftsman bungalow.

Buckmaster-Ross taught sensory art to toddlers at her own studio in Redmond Town Center eight years ago, but gave up that business so she could see more of her own kids. She was hired by Orange Blossom Society last summer to help with birthday parties. Soon after, she and Ghio decided to add her class and it was put up on the facility’s schedule in mid-September.

“I owned a business called Art Experiences and my marketing person put me together with Sharman,” said Buckmaster-Ross. “Basically we became friends and I talked to her about my concept that I used to do and we brought this here.”

With more than 20 years of experience working with children and a degree in early childhood education, Buckmaster-Ross says her “whole life has been basically based around children.” She is a proponent of the sensory arts and their impact on childhood development and has structured her class to be both educational and enjoyable.

The class is designed to use art to stimulate an openended learning environment, which is a key for developing creativity, problem-solving and communication skills, as well as physical coordination. The Orange Blossom website warns students to “dress for the mess” and that’s not an empty caution.

In the class, kids paint their feet and hands, splash in a bucket full of cornstarchbased sludge, create collages with ripped up construction paper and translucent, legalsized stickers, and write on

walls, among other things.

Parents are even encouraged to join in on the fun and often find themselves wrist deep in the same substance that their son or daughter is rubbing on his or her nose.

Sarah Carvalho, a Redmond resident and mother of two who lives just a five-minute drive away from Orange Blossom, recently started bringing her 2-yearold son Matías to the Art Expeditions class. As a former Montessori teacher, she said she understands the value of hands-on time with different materials, though projects at home can be limited.

“It’s nice to have the opportunity to just get messy and be free,” she said. “We have

Wednesday, Nov. 30 Burglary: Redmond police arrested a man for burglary in the 7200 block of 153rd Avenue Northeast in the Grasslawn neighborhood.

Theft: Officers responded to a report of a theft at a restaurant in the 17100 block of Redmond Way downtown. An employee noticed his jacket was missing at the end of the day. The incident was caught on video surveillance.

Shoplifting: Redmond police

received two reports for shoplifting.

The first was at 3:06 p.m. in the 8800 block of 161 Avenue Northeast. A man was arrested. An employee at a drug store in the 17200 block of Redmond Way downtown reported a shoplift at 5:52 p.m.

Hit and run: At about 12:50 a.m., Redmond police investigated a hitand-run traffic collision in the 16900 block of Northeast 80th Street on Education Hill.

Suspicious circumstance: At 1:42 a.m., an individual in the 8800 block of 161st Avenue Northeast reported to the police that he and his friend were â&#x20AC;&#x153;jumpedâ&#x20AC;? by two males armed with handguns. The victims involved didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to cooperate by providing more details of this case.

Harassment: At around 9 p.m., Redmond police investigated the report of threats made toward a juvenile in the 18100 block of Northeast 95th Street on Education Hill.

Tuesday, Nov. 29

Theft: Redmond police responded to a theft report at 8:28 a.m. from the 14700 block of Northeast 87th Street.

There was no suspect information.

Monday, Nov. 28, Burglary: Redmond police responded to two calls for burglaries. The first was at 11:09 p.m. in the 7500 block of 164th Avenue Northeast downtown.

Someone broke into a hotel room while the tenant was on vacation. The second came at 11:11 p.m. from the 2200 block of 148th Avenue Northeast in the Overlake neighborhood.

Possession: A man was arrested around 5:30 p.m. for possessing liquor and drugs in a city park located in the 7800 block of 168th Avenue Northeast downtown.

Assault: Redmond police responded to a call for a possible DUI at 9:58 p.m. to a residence in the 16600 block of Northeast 108th Place on Education Hill. The reporting party said her daughter was under the influence of drugs and was attempting to leave in

her vehicle. After police arrived, the suspect assaulted an officer by striking him in the face. The suspect was transported to the hospital and will be charged through investigations.

Fraud: At around 6 p.m., Redmond police investigated a report of fraud at a local residence in the 16800 block of Northeast 91st Street on Education Hill.

The victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bank information was used to make an unauthorized online purchase.

Saturday, Nov. 26 Burglaries: Redmond police responded to four reports for burglaries downtown. Two came in from residences located on the 18600 block of Northeast 57th Way the first was at 3:57 p.m. The second was at 8:59 p.m.

Two more came from residences on the 18600 block of Northeast 55th Way the first at 6:31 p.m. and the second at 7:17 p.m.

Bartell Drugs is selling a Redmond neighborhood mug as part of a highfashion tableware design. SAMANTHA PAK, Redmond Reporter said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what makes it so interesting â&#x20AC;Ś Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the quirkiness of it.â&#x20AC;?

The product design also highlights Redmond as the bicycle capital of the northwest as well as some of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s staple events such as Derby Days and the summer concert series at nearby Marymoor Park.

Bowles said in designing the products, she and her team visited the different neighborhoods, which also include Bellevue, Snohomish and Tacoma and Seattle neighborhoods such as Ballard, Wallingford, the University District and Capitol Hill. The product line also offers a larger 8-inch by 12inch serving tray featuring the Seattle neighborhoods.

To further solidify the sense of community, Bowles said they are having a competition among the neighborhoods. She said Rosanna and Bartell will donate a park bench to the neighborhood with the highest sell-through rate for its products.

Two western Washington businesses are teaming up to give Redmond residents a unique gift idea for the holiday season.

For the second year, high-fashion tableware company and Seattle-based Rosanna Inc. and local drugstore chain Bartell Drugs are offering a series of mugs featuring 14 neighborhoods throughout the Puget Sound area, including Redmond. In addition to the mugs, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product line has expanded to include a six-inch square decorative serving tray and holiday ornament featuring each neighborhood.

Rosanna Chief Executive Officer Rosanna Bowles said the project began as a way to celebrate the many different neighborhoods in the Pacific Northwest. She said they joined forces with Bartell because the drugstore chain is neighborhood driven.

Bowles said the project is a way to bring people together within their communities and capture the neighborhoodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; essence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very much celebrating the character of each neighborhood,â&#x20AC;? she said.

ccording to the old adage, experience is the best teacher.

And in the competitive 4A Kingco league this winter, there will be no basketball team more experienced than the Redmond Mustangs.

The Mustangsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; program has been building up to the 2011-12 season, as a tremendous group of upperclassmen, led by four returning starters from last year, are set to lead the way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The expectations are high, not from the outside, but within ourselves,â&#x20AC;? said head coach Jeff Larson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are looking to draw on that experience, and in that sense we have been building up to this year.â&#x20AC;?

OLDER AND WISER

The Redmond Mustangs Juniors basketball team won the Mount Si Wildcat Tournament last weekend at Mount Si High School, beating the Wolverines in the championship game, 30-17. The backcourt will feature returning starter Leslie Ellis, and the Mustangs were fortunate to pick up a talented transfer, Kyle Sawtell, from Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School in Shoreline who has made the transition from being a forward to a guard. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a real nice addition,â&#x20AC;?

Larson said of Sawtell, who led his former team in scoring as a sophomore last year.

In total, 11 out of the 13 rostered varsity players for the Mustangs will

be graduating this spring, with only Sawtell and sophomore guard Ryan Thomson continuing on to next year.

SHARING IS CARING With as many individual talents as Redmond will have on the court, the challenge will be to get everyone involved offensively and playing as a cohesive unit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our willingness to share the ball,â&#x20AC;? Larson said on the Mustangsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; key to success this season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to be very unselfish.â&#x20AC;?

MUSTANG JUNIORS WIN MOUNT SI HOOPS TOURNAMENT

After the Mustangsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; memorable fifth-place state tournament run in 2009, the team has endured two underachieving seasons as this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stars took the time to grow and mature as players.

With the experience and talent the team possesses this time around, numbers like last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall record of 11-12 look to be a thing of the past. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think our seniors are a big part, most of us have been playing together since sixth grade, me and Conner have been playing before that,â&#x20AC;? said Jason Harrington, a firstteam all-Kingco selection last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our biggest strength.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to the 6-foot-6 Harrington, Conner Floan will be a force down low at 6-7, along with extremely athletic Peter Hendron, at 6-3, creating a dominating post presence that few squads will be able to match. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a good amount of size,â&#x20AC;? noted Floan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got some bigger

has the potential to be game-defining, as league contests are often decided by a timely steal or a key offensive board down the stretch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Often times, the team that plays harder, wins,â&#x20AC;? Larson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Are we going to go for every rebound, take the extra step and deny that pass â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are we willing to do the things that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show up in the box score?â&#x20AC;?

As for the players, they dedicated themselves to improving their physical fitness over the summer months, and hope that their hard work will pay dividends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In basketball, we put each other to a challenge this summer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; everybody get to the gym five days a week,â&#x20AC;? recalled Harrington. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone really stepped up and I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to show on the court this year.â&#x20AC;?

The team will also get to do something they havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done since 2008, and that is travel to a holiday hoops tournament.

They will be departing shortly after Christmas to San Francisco and the Bambauer Classic, a premier event featuring some of the best local Catholic prep teams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pretty high-level tournament,â&#x20AC;? Larson noted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited for the competition. We havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t traveled to something like this since the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;08-â&#x20AC;&#x2122;09 team, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some parallels to whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happened in past years.â&#x20AC;?

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;past yearsâ&#x20AC;? refers to that magical 2008-09 season, where the Mustangs entered the 16-team state tournament as an underdog and ended up placing fifth, the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest finish since 1996 when the Mustangs took fourth.

Two of the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting five had older brothers that were starters on that squad, Harrington (brother Chris) and Ellis (brother Will), and both of them would love to follow in their footsteps at the Tacoma Dome this March.

But when asked whether his team had the potential to make that postseason run, Larsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple, four-word answer put the proverbial ball in their court. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to them.â&#x20AC;?

...obituaries Patricia Noel Eufemio passed away November 19, 2011, in Redmond,WA. She was born December 19, 1937 in New Rochelle, NY to Francis and Mary Farrell. Pat married John Eufemio in St. Louis, MO in 1956.

They adopted ten children during their marriage. Pat moved to Redmond in 1988, raising granddaughter Catherine.

As the mother of many children she opened her heart to all of their friends. Many young people spent hours, even days, at her house and came to call Pat â&#x20AC;&#x153;Momâ&#x20AC;?. That tradition continued in her later years, in Redmond, where many called her â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandmaâ&#x20AC;?. She enjoyed collecting china dolls, making doll houses, knitting and needle work.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, former husband Dr. John Eufemio and infant children Patricia and Michael. She is survived by siblings Jim Farrell (Susan) of Anchorage and Beverly Spiva of Redmond, children Peter Eufemio, Mary Woodman (Tom) and Thomas Eufemio (Paola) of Redmond, Jim Eufemio (Libby) and Kim Eufemio (Mary) of Kodiak, JenniferValentine (Chris) of Billings, MT, SusanTipton (Tim) of Grants Pass, OR, Amber Eufemio of Las Vegas, NV, and Catherine Eufemio of Sterling, VA, as well as fifteen grandchildren including Patty Woodman Pickering (Ryan), Meghan, Laurie and Katie Woodman, Kelly Schmeil, Alicia and Steven Valentine, Ashley Eufemio, and two great-grandchildren, Maya and Reed Pickering of Redmond.

Pat will be remembered as loving and caring by all those who were lucky enough to share in her life. A memorial service will be held December 17, 11:00am at St Judeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Redmond.

The Emerald Heights resident was the former owner of four hair salons in Redmond and Kirkland: Rose Hill Styling Salon, which she opened in 1960 and doubled in size within four years; Coiffure 88 in

Beauty School in Yakima and a partner in the Metropolitan Beauty School in Seattle. She was appointed

by Gov. Albert Rosselini to the Washington State Board of Cosmetology as an examiner for students securing operator licenses in hairdressing and served for 12 years.

Terry is survived by two sons Robert and Michael Terry, their wives Sandra and Melissa, 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
