Saturday was a busy one around the region with plenty of opportunities for local residents to have a good time. For now at least, the name remains the same.

The Bonney Lake City Council Sept. 27 tabled for further discussion an ordinance to rename the city’s portion of the SumnerBuckley Highway in honor of veterans.

The 5-2 decision came after a handful of long-time city residents spoke against the name change during the public comment portion of the meeting.

“I think the council needs a bit more time in understanding just how many people there are opposing this,” Councilmember Jim Rackley said as he seconded the motion to table, which then by rule goes to a vote with further

From local swimmer to interim police chief Sumner grad Dana Powers now leading Bonney Lake’s police.

Dana Powers has been the police chief in Bonney Lake for

just a week or so, but changes are already being made.

The most notable change is to the chief’s office at the Public Safety Building. Powers has not only repainted the office and added memorabilia from her life and career, but rearranged the room, altering the angle of the desk and placing it closer to the

Powers said the desk shift allows her to see more people in the hallways and leads to more interaction with her fellow officers and detectives.

“I can’t just sit here and not interact with others,” she said from her new office the morning after being officially sworn in as the city’s interim police chief.

It was that same desire to be involved, to be where the action is that set Powers on her career in police work more than 20 years ago.

“It just seemed to fit my personality,” she said of work that changes every day and offer a role that is more than just a cog in a

machine. “I just wanted to be a part of it.”

Powers, 46, grew up in the Bonney Lake area and attended Sumner High School before transferring to Wilson in Tacoma before her junior year.

“I always really considered this home still,” she said.

A champion swimmer, Powers received a scholarship to Nebraska, where she was a 16-time AllAmerican and helped the team to three straight Big 8 Conference championships in the mid-1980s. Powers even competed in the 1984 Olympic trials, finishing just a foot behind the eventual gold medal winner she jokes that within that foot there were 16 other swimmers.

school to study journalism, Powers said her brother was in law enforcement at the time and her then-fiance was studying criminal justice and she took an interest in the career herself because it seemed more exciting.

In 1989, Powers got her first law enforcement job as a corrections officer in Kent. Three months later she was hired as a full-time officer in Tacoma.

In 1992 when a job in Bonney Lake came open, Powers moved back to her home department, where she said she seemed to fit better.

Powers said the Bonney Lake department offered opportunities for new projects and to try new things, as well as to help start new programs for the community.

“Compared to Tacoma, there wasn’t as much activity,” she remembered. “But what was exciting and fun about here was I had the latitude to start and work different projects.”

During her run with

Bonney Lake, Powers was instrumental in starting the city’s Marine Services Unit, was part of the first Special Response Team (that eventually became part of Pierce County Metro SWAT) and served as the city’s DARE officer in the 1990s.

Powers said working in the MSU and DARE program gave her the opportunity to work in the community in a positive manner and connect with kids and families to make a difference in their lives, something she feels is at the crux of what police should be doing.

“It’s not always a positive conversation, but I try to make it a positive conversation by the end,” she said. “I think that’s what the police department is.”

Powers worked her way into a full time investigations position and soon helped start the Crime Response Unit, a multijurisdictional group designed to support smaller departments during large investigations.

In 2008, Powers continued her rise through the ranks and was named assistant chief under nowretired Chief Mike Mitchell.

Working with Mitchell, Powers got her first taste of department management and began to learn the ropes of the chief’s position.

“As a No. 2, your job is to make the chief’s job easier,” she said.

W hen M itchel l announced his retirement this year, Mayor Neil Johnson selected Powers to take over. She was appointed interim chief, which does not require confirmation from the city council, with the idea that after a year both Powers and the city would review her time leading the department, though the mayor has said it is his intention to make Powers the permanent chief at year’s end.

Powers said her time with the department and the ability to work on many different cases and units within the department helped prepare her for her new role.

“I’ve done basically every job we have to do here so I understand it,” she said.

She also said that as chief, she can continue to do all of the various roles and aspects of police work she enjoys, as well as help her fellow officers do their jobs.

“I love a good investigation and I can still be involved with that,” she said.

But Powers realizes the role of chief is different from even that of the assistant chief because of the additional communication with the city council, staff and mayor, as well as the additional pressures of managing not just the department’s staff, but the

budget as well.

“My job is definitely to make sure our budget is where it needs to be for the city,” she said.

Powers also said Bonney Lake has become a “destination department” and she wants to keep it that way.

“I want it to be fun and professional,” she said. “It’s a great job; it’s not always doom and gloom.”

Powers said her philosophy will be to “lead by example” and promote good communication throughout the department and with citizens. She expects consistency and accountability among her officers.

“The biggest thing about this job is you have to be truthful. That’s what this badge on your chest represents,” she said, adding that a department’s personality starts at the top. “If I don’t do it right, how do you expect everyone else to?”

Powers said aside from the office, which she said she is changing to reflect her personality, there are not many changes expected at the department, though her time working through the ranks with many of her fellow officers will give her the knowledge she needs to make sure the right people are in the right positions within the department, doing the jobs they most enjoy and are best at.

Powers said Bonney Lake is seen around the region as a good department, but she knows there is even more to it than that.

“I know we have a great department and that’s my goal – become that great department,” she said.

“I like having fun in this job,” she said. “You have to be serious when you have to be serious, but you can also have fun when you’re doing the job.”

What is your family dynamic like? How would you describe your approach to marriage and parenting?

Becky and I have been married for 23 years and we have three wonderful children. My approach to marriage is to look at it through the prism of friendship and respect. Becky is my friend and I have nothing but the greatest respect for her. I know she feels the same way about me. We were in college when we met and married. Since then I have enjoyed the life we have built together. We enjoy our children and both of us have worked hard to set a good example for them and give them a good start in life. I think parents do well by their children when they do this. Our children are in high school and college and Becky and I are proud of them as young adults. They bring joy to our lives.

Do you have any hobbies?

I really like to ski and do so as often as I can. I enjoy participating in community musical theater, having performed in productions in Sumner, Puyallup and

Enumclaw. I also like to travel, read and cook.

You’re originally from Olympia, but you’ve lived in Sumner for 20 years.

How did you come to live here?

In August of 1991, after graduating from Western Washington University and and student teaching in Elma, Wash., I was looking for a full-time teaching position. A teacher in the Elma School District handed me a printed posting, (pre-Internet), for a social studies position at Sumner Junior High. I told him that my wife taught first grade in Tumwater and my goal was to teach in the Tumwater district or somewhere nearby. In fact, I had applied for a position in Tumwater and expected to be called for an interview.

He told me to apply for the job in Sumner and use it as a “practice interview” for Tumwater. I received a call from Sumner Junior High for an interview. I drove to

This is the third in a series of profiles on candidates in the Sumner city council race.

You work as a regional distribution manager for Contech Construction Products; do you think your job experience would benefit your work with council?

Over the last decade, my job has allowed me to work with cities, counties, states, environmental groups and others on issues regarding growth, construction, and the preservation of natural habitat. I have seen these organizations handle issues involving growth successfully and in some cases, not so well. I have worked with environmental agencies that have managed their environment nicely and others that have lost their original focus to the detriment of their community.

I will bring this experience, both positive and negative, to the council as we make decisions involving how to best manage growth for the people of Sumner.

You’ve studied history, social studies, education and administration and curriculum. What attracted you to these fields? Do you think they would benefit your work as a member of council?

I think that most people select their fields of study based on what they think will answer the most questions for them. History and social studies showed me how the society we live in today was built and how it functions now. The study of history in particular took a lot of fear out of my life.

History shows us that people have faced challenges and difficulties in the past and are sure to do so again; that bad times lead to good times and vice versa. My favorite history professor used to quote a verse from Ecclesiastes: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” I’ve been inspired by this verse and it helps me put my knowledge of history to use in the present. Education and curriculum taught me how to teach and present information in meaningful way, a skill I have found indispensable in and out of the classroom.

My administration training showed me how schools and other organizations work. I think my education in all these fields will make me a well rounded and effective council member.

How did you come to the Planning Commission?

I have long been interested in issues surrounding Sumner’s growth and how to effectively mange that growth while maintaining the heart and soul of our city. I thought that serving on the planning commission would help me understand how these issues were handled and allow

By then Becky and I had decided that Sumner would be a great place to live and raise our baby. The lesson went well and I was offered the position. I received a call from Tumwater Middle School the next day asking me to interview for a social studies position.

I thanked them for their consideration and declined the interview.

What made you decide to run for elected office?

Have you had longstanding political ambitions, or is the process new to you?

I have always been interested in government and politics and the origin and modern interpretations of the U.S. Constitution in particular. As a history teacher I enjoyed teaching American and Washington state history and always taught my students that democracy is an active thing, not a spectator sport.

law that you would like to focus on during a council term?

Managing the city’s budget during these hard economic times is critical. I also think effective management of Sumner’s growth is very important. Allowing big box stores and the like into a city might be an easy source of revenue, but such decisions must be considered in the context of keeping the unique elements of a city intact. I would like to focus on maintaining our vital downtown core. I visit many other cities in the Puget Sound area during the course of my work week and am always proud to say I am from Sumner. If one of my customers has visited Sumner, they mention our beautiful downtown without fail. If a client has not been here, I mention our beautiful downtown and encourage them to visit.

Sumner has many other great things to offer, but I think our downtown core is unique.

If he chose not to run, I thought I would be the best person to carry on his legacy of honorable service to the people of Sumner.

He was 70.

Will online dating help the odds?

Today’s subject is online dating.

I was hoping to do some research and write an extensive series of articles, but certain staff members think the story is too much fun for me.

Fine.

The online dating issue caught my attention when a colleague told me that guys his age, in their mid-20s, are going online to find dates.

I always thought the folks clicking the online dating buttons were sitting around in locked wards sipping red liquid and watching Jack Nicholson in “One Flew Over the Dennis Box Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Kent Reporter Now I find out everyone is using online dating. I did a brief survey of folks in my office and found most had friends and relations of all ages using the various online dating services.

No one ever tells me anything.

I’ll bet God is up there in heaven saying, “Online dating? What’s that? Why didn’t anyone tell me about this? I’m God, I get to know things.”

Apparently, people looking for a date fill out screening surveys online and some computer nerd matches them with a living, breathing entity who has the same answers.

That scares me.

There is even some quasi-scientific study I read somewhere that said most men think they look like Greek gods even though a knuckle-dragging caveman is staring back at them in the mirror. It’s a special male talent.

The only thing I can figure is there must be a very good lie detector on the man side of the screening survey. I’ll bet that lie detector is a girl sitting at a

Big changes ahead for Pierce County parks funding and transit services I think most people would agree that access to clean, safe public parks is a huge benefit to any community.

With summer quickly coming to an end, many of you can look back with fond memories of a day at the lake, or a picnic with the family at one of our state, county or city parks.

On a county level, we have been fortunate to keep open and maintain our county parks, despite dwindling tax revenues over the last few years.

However, the deferred maintenance to current parks is backing up, and there is demand for new parks as the population increases.

Not satisfied with the two obvious solutions (close parks, or raise taxes/ fees), I decided to look outside the box. I did some research and found that throughout the country, many counties have had tremendous success supplementing their parks budgets by creating a Parks Foundation.

A Parks Foundation is not a new government program and does not rely on tax dollars. It is a private 501(c)3 non-profit organization created specifically to supplement the needs of the parks department. It

can raise private donations through memberships, individual/corporate donors, and grants.

In addition to raising dollars, the Foundation can raise people capital (volunteers), to help offset maintenance costs.

I am currently leading the effort to create our own Parks Foundation here in Pierce County. Of course, what will ultimately make this effort successful is the involvement and support of the thousands of citizens throughout Pierce County, so please contact my office if you are interested in this issue! Together we can make a difference.

Pierce Transit Service ending.

Now what?

You may have noticed the plastic bags covering the bus stop signs

throughout East Pierce County, stating that as of this past Sunday, services will be eliminated.

To remind you, earlier this year Pierce Transit made the decision to eliminate many bus routes (including most of East Pierce County), citing declining sales tax revenues.

Losing our bus service is quite a blow, but adding insult to injury is the fact that we are still paying the tax to fund Pierce Transit.

I am currently working with attorneys, the mayors of small cities and Pierce Transit on a process to redraw taxing boundaries. This process will probably take six months to a year.

While this process is in the works, I will be working on the second problem – providing public transportation services in our communities. There are a number of successful public transportation models out there, and I am hopeful that we can find a workable solution as quickly as possible.

The council had planned to rename the stretch of highway between the intersection with state Route 410 and Angeline road to honor veterans, but the possibility sparked an outcry from businesses on the road as well as community members who said the name was part of the fabric of the city.

I have a scientific theory that women are genetically designed to be impervious to all the dopy girl-catching tactics males try.

There is one small caveat that allows for marriage.

• Put someone in charge of music, whether a band or DJ is hired or an Mp3 playlist is kept on rotation.

• Enlist an impartial judge to vote on the best individual costume and best decorated car.

• Plan events for the kids so they are kept occupied. Scavenger hunts, craft contests (decorating a pumpkin) and other such ideas can be considered.

• Be sure to solicit candy donations so there is enough to go around.

• Food and other refreshments may be needed. Participants can bring table-top grills or sandwiches and make it a true tailgating event.

• Use the trunk-or-treat time to really mingle and get to know new participants. This is a much more social way to celebrate Halloween than simply going door-to-door.

What parent doesn’t worry about the safety of Halloween?

Children going door-to-door asking for candy and other trinkets carries with it a certain measure of danger. Hosting candy swaps and other activities tailgate-style removes much of the danger. It’s called trunk-or-treating and is often a community- or churchsponsored event.

When people do a trunk-ortreating scenario, families and other participants park in a large parking lot with deckedout car costumes. Or they open their trunks to reveal a decorated Halloween wonderland inside.

Participants hang out by their decorated vehicles and then visit others within the safety of the parking lot, sharing treats and stories. The event resembles tailgating at a sporting event – without the sporting event.

Depending on the budget and number of families involved, the trunk-or-treat can turn into a big event that lasts into the night.

The strange journey of Joe and Steve

The first time Steve Lemco was introduced to Joe Walsh—the musician, not the man —he was in the throes of his first and only acid trip, pushed out the door by a man who had earned his enthusiastic welcome to the Lake Tapps waterfront party with a bag of the stuff and a curt “Who wants to trip?”

Lemco was wading in the mournful echoes of his friends’ voices when one put in the James Gang’s “Yer Album,” then “The James Gang Rides Again,” on repeat.

He got it in his head that the guitar riffs were speaking to his subconscious.

“I came to the blitzed conclusion that I was supposed to get some kind of message from the music,” Lemco writes. Then the premonitions came: “Joe Walsh has something to do with my life. He is going to quit his band and be known by his own name.

I will write songs about him and meet him many times.

“We will go horseback riding together.”

And meet him he did. Many, many times. In fact, the only part of the premonition that hasn’t come to pass is their shared equestrian appreciation.

It’s the kind of coincidence that can only be attributed to serendipitous happenstance, time travel, or a level of determination unique to the crazed obsessive.

One could be forgiven for believing Lemco’s relationship with Walsh was the focus of his eponymous book “Joe & Me.” But it only serves as the strange thru-line to his memoir and the life that inspired it.

In reality, “Joe & Me” is the story of Lemco and his complicated relationship with his older brothers, each famous—or infamous—in their own circles.

Ed, Ron and Larry: the motorcycle millionaire, the bank robber and the drug dealer to the stars. The three are front and center for the first three chapters of the book, which cover Lemco’s childhood years in Australia, New York’s Bronx and

“I couldn’t just write about Joe, because then it would be ‘I met Joe Walsh, I’m so cool; I know Joe Walsh, I’m so cool,’” Lemco said. “And I wasn’t sure if the biographical stuff was interesting on its own. So they support each other.”

Indeed, the first third of the book reads like a relentless war journal of boyhood: a marathon rattat-tat of unintentional

“Joe & Me” is Lemco’s second printed book— he has a handful of children’s stories available only online—after 1999’s sales book “You Gotta Wanna.”

A few short years after that book’s release, Lemco’s professional and personal life unraveled and he slipped into depression, which he still suffers from today, he

Ed, who would go on to open an auto dealership in Albany, Oregon and found the 20 Club model of motorcycle sales training, is conspicuously in the background of the collective Lemco childhood—always mentioned as the pragmatic sibling who pockets his milk money for a rainy day—but his presence looms large over the book’s backstory.

Ed died of cancer July 15, a little more than two months after informing Lemco of his illness.

“I had started writing a

few days before I found out he was sick,” Lemco said.

“And when I found out, it became a race to finish it and put it in Ed’s hands.

Which I did. But by that time, he didn’t have enough strength to read it.”

Longtime Plateau residents and local history buffs will find descriptions of a Bonney Lake a world apart from the Bonney Lake community of today. The Bonney Lake of Lemco’s childhood is not the moneyed community of today; people eked out a living out of ramshackle houses in the woods. At Sumner Elementary School, he was exotic: “The Bonney Lake Kid.”

The narrative doesn’t find its groove until Lemco’s teen years, shortly before his epiphany. There’s a foreboding sense of life as he knows it falling apart, between his brothers’ exit from his everyday life, a teen abortion and his first experiments with drugs. Once Walsh makes his namesake entrance— almost halfway into the text—Lemco is tossed his line in the ocean. If the average man searches for a meaning to his life, Lemco doesn’t. He has Joe. It starts with Lemco and a friend posing as roadies to sneak backstage. And from there it just… kind of doesn’t stop. At intervals of

several years at a time, he tracks down motorcades to after-parties, hands Walsh poetry, picnics with family of the Eagles, talks his way past armed police and arranges for a connected hotel room next to Walsh’s in a locked down hall. That last example, the third substantial meeting between the two, almost put Lemco on the Very Suspicious list.

“He came back to the room with this big, tattooed guy,” he said. “And he told me, ‘Look man, you’ve been cool the few times we met, but you’ve shown up backstage, you’ve followed me to hotels, and now you have a hotel room next to me. What am I supposed to think?’ So I finally explained everything to him: my vision, how all the opportunities just appeared to meet him. He heard that, he just laughed, shooed his bodyguard away.

“He said ‘That’s all cool, but why on Earth would we be riding on horseback together?’”

Lemco claims he’s met Walsh more than 16 times, each meeting more or less amicable depending on the twitchiness of the security staff that evening. In between, he writes about brother Larry’s success and death pushing blow, his devotion to brother Ron during a 40-year prison sentence for armed robbery (Ron only served four years and has written his own book, titled “Rest Stop”), and the life and death of his own marriages.

The narrative as a whole begs the question: What does Joe Walsh have to do with Lemco’s life, anyway?

Is he just a determined fan, or is there something genuinely supernatural at play?

A Courier-Herald Special Report The best way to become acquainted with Mount Rainier is to climb in the car and set off on a journey of discovery, allowing time for the countless stops to be encountered along the way.

From Enumclaw, the favored loop will take about 150 miles. Those who experience the mountain from a car window, without stopping, will spend about five hours completing the circuit. Those who know how to enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer will spend at least a full day – perhaps a couple of days if overnight camping is part of the itinerary.

The following route, it should be noted, is largely impacted by the weather. It usually is open by the end of May and traditionall remains open until late October. Winter snowfall closes the road each winter from just east of Crystal Mountain to Paradise on the mountain’s south side. The need to repair weather-ravaged roads also comes into play; right now, the Stevens Canyon Road is closed for repairs, prohibiting a complete loop.

But here’s the rundown, when perfect conditions apply.

The road around Rainier begins in Enumclaw, the largest of the gateway communities, where dining opportunities are varied, gas is plentiful and grocery stores stock more than enough provisions for a mountain outing.

Here are some stops integral to a true Mount Rainier outing.

• Federation Forest State Park This 619-acre state park is a testament to the forward thinking of a group of women who, in the 1940s, decided it was important to preserve old-growth timber during the rush towards logging. Located along the picturesque White River, explore mature forests of Douglas fir, Western Hemlock, Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar. Hike on the 12 miles of trails or take the family on one of three interpretive paths; ideal for small children. This is a bird lover’s delight. Tour the interpretive center offering a gift shop and enjoy lunch at one of the four day-use picnic areas.

• Greenwater It’s the last place to get gas on this side of Mount Rainier National Park and it boasts such businesses as the Naches Tavern and Wapiti Woolies, whose hats have been to the top of Everest, and other places to shop, rent equipment or grab something to eat.

• Mount Rainier Viewpoint Stop here for the first of many glorious views of Mt. Rainier after beginning this tour.

• Skookum Falls Dropping a dramatic 250 feet in two tiers, watch the water shimmer as it makes its way down the mountainside leading into the White River. The view is best early in the season when the water flow is at its height, although observing the falls frozen by the cold winter air is a unique experience.

• Side Trip: Sunrise It has been closed for the season, but – when available - Sunrise offers postcard views of Mount Rainier. Sitting at 6,400 feet, it is the highest point to which you can drive in the park. There are incredible views of Emmons Glacier, SEE TOUR, PAGE 12

Crystal aiming to be 12-month destination The development of Crystal Mountain as a destination ski resort was an ambitious project that ultimately proved successful.

Now, a crucial addendum to the original philosophy – to turn the resort some 45 minutes east of Enumclaw into a year-round attraction – is being played out.

“We should e a stop that everyone visiting the Mount Rainier

area wants to make,” said Justus Hyatt, who works in sales and marketing for Crystal Mountain.

Hyatt took time to explain Crystal’s all-year effort on a damp day in late September, when the resort’s parking lot was scattered with work vehicles. Crystal Mountain’s first snow fell Sept.

17, she said, providing an unofficial start to the winter season.

The flakes didn’t stick, but it was

enough to bump the energy level up a notch, Hyatt said.

As a major player in the Mount Rainier economy, and clearly the dominant entity on the north side of the mountain, Crystal has invested a great deal of time and energy – not to mention millions of dollars – into making the resort a destination for visitors any time of the year.

The most notable development

is the Mount Rainier Gondola, an $8 million investment that carries riders in style to the summit. During the summer months, the gondola lifts guests to new heights, including the Sjummit House Restaurant, the highest dining opportunity provided in the state of Washington. During the winter, skier will use the gondola as well as diners.

Hyatt noted Crystal Mountain

was host to 50,000 visitors this summer, largely due to the buzz created by the gondola. But that’s not the only reason to head to the high country during the warmer months, she said. Crystal also is a destination for hikers and mountain bikers, and there’s horseback tours available.

• Side Trip: Tipsoo Lake and Chinook Pass Summit Just a few hundred meters from the summit, stop at quaint Tipsoo Lake. Departing from Tipsoo Lake is the popular Naches Loop Trail. Explore colorful fields of subalpine flowers, pass beside two fragile, glassy ponds, and discover breathtaking views of Mount Rainier along this family friendly three hour hike. For a shorter walk, take the nature trail leading around the lake. A picnic area is also located here.

To reach Tipsoo Lake and Chinook Pass Summit, continue on SR 410, rather than following the driving tour as it turns right onto SR 123.

• Grove of the Patriarchs: Enjoy an easy 1.5-mile loop through this old-growth forest.

• Box Canyon The Muddy Fork of the Cowlitz River has cut a channel 100 feet deep but only 15 to 30 feet across. Walk a bridge across

the canyon for a dizzying view of this deep forest canyon. A nice picnic area is also located here.

• Reflection Lake Now descending down the mountain, stop and see Mount Rainier’s stunning reflection in the crystal waters of Reflection Lake.

• Side Trip: Paradise Discover Paradise. At 5,400 feet, this area with its glorious views of Mount Rainier is the primary destination for many visitors to the park. The Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center offers interpretive displays about the geology, flora, fauna and mountain climbing in the area.

To reach this destination, follow the signs to Paradise. Turn right off Stevens Canyon Road onto Paradise Valley Road and travel two miles to the visitor center.

• Glacier Vista Viewpoint Look up to the summit and see Nisqually Glacier and its origin on the permanent Nisqually snowfield. Beginning at 14,000 feet, this is the fastest moving glacier on the mountain, moving at more than one foot a day.

Visit Longmire Museum, one of the oldest museums in the National Park System with several exhibits on the cultural and natural history of the park. Located here

is the Longmire Wilderness Information Center with information on hiking and climbing in the area. It is also a starting point for hikers of the Wonderland Trail.

• Kautz Creek This is the site of a massive mudflow which occurred in 1947. The original road through this area now lies 20 feet below the surface.

• Nisqually Entrance Standing at the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, notice the wooden entrance arch built in 1922 and reconstructed in 1973. Just inside this entrance see the oldest building in the park, a cabin built in 1908 that was occupied by a park ranger.

• Ashford Visitor Center and Base Camp Discover the wide variety of recreational opportunities and services offered in this southwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park.

• Elbe Depot and the Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church Since 1906, the Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church has watched over the mountain community of Elbe. Built by German immigrants, this tiny church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

• Pack Forest Winding your way back to Enumclaw, stop at Pack Forest for outstanding hiking trails. The forest is open to hikers, cyclists and equestrians.

• Eatonville It is home to Northwest Trek, and The Pioneer Farm Museum and Ohop Indian Village. Dining options and support services are available.

• Lake Kapowsin Take a look at pretty Lake Kapowsin. It is a favorite among anglers. Covering 512 acres, the lake was formed by the Electron Mudflow which occurred 500 years ago.

• Side Trip: Carbon River Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park Visit the historic communities of Wilkeson and Carbonado and enjoy the Fairfax Bridge. It was built in 1921 and when the 494-foot long bridge was constructed, it was the highest bridge in the state. Spanning the Carbon River, today the bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

• Buckley It’s the last stop before returning to Enumclaw. Dining and services are available.

VisitRainier revving the economic engine

Just how closely linked are the majesty of Mount Rainier and the dollars it attracts?

One indicator is the fact that Mount Rainier has, in effect, its own booster club, existing solely to entice visitors to the mountain.

VisitRainier is a small but active organization, using public money to boost tourism efforts on three sides of Washington’s iconic destination.

“We try to take a regional approach…toward being the definitive resource for all the gateway communities,” said Mary Kay Nelson, the only director VisitRainier has had since being formed in 2005.

“We haven’t made major connections with the east side of the mountain,” she said, noting her interest lies primarily with promoting communities like Enumclaw, Eatonville, Ashford, Elbe, Packwood and Morton.

Nelson doesn’t hesitate when it comes to stating the sole reason for VisitRainier’s

existence. With limited staff, the operation pitches Rainier as a prime destination for tourists, operating with the goal of “putting heads in beds.”

Seeing that the lodging industry succeeds, she said, “is an economic development piece of the puzzle.”

It makes sense that VisitRainier expend a great deal of effort in driving tourists to the hotels, motels and lodges that operate around the mountain – that’s where the organization’s funding comes from.

Beginning in 1992, every city began imposing a 2 percent lodging tax, paid by each guest renting a room.

The money was collected and dispersed with the single-minded goal of promoting tourism. Pierce County, Lewis County and the city of Morton allocate some of those tax collections toward VisitRainier.

Nelson works out of Chehalis – not at all a gateway to Mount Rainier – but proximity isn’t an issue. The

operation depends almost entirely on its website (www. visitrainier.com) to generate interest in visiting the mountain.

Enumclaw, Nelson said, is in an odd situation. It’s a prime gateway to everything Mount Rainier has to offer, but sits in King County, outside VisitRainier’s funding source.

But that doesn’t mean the Enumclaw area isn’t a major player in VisitRainier’s ongoing effort. Eastbound travelers on state Route 410 re-enter Pierce County once they hit Greenwater, putting everything uphill from Enumclaw clearly on VisitRainier’s radar.

“The Crystal Mountain area is definitely an anchor for us,” Nelson said. Alta Crystal Resort is a founding member of VisitRainier, she said, adding that Alta Crystal owners Steve and Vivian Cadamatori have been key players in economic development efforts. Steve Cadamatori currently sits on VisitRainier’s board of direc-

tors, Nelson said, and Vivian Cadamatori is a member of the Pierce County Lodging ax Advisory Committee, which helps determine where the lodging tax dollars are allocated.

Adding to the local connection is Julie Johnson, VisitRainier’s media relations staffer, who lives in Enumclaw.

Nelson is hesitant to take sides when it comes to the inevitable conflicts that occasionally arise between business owners and government entities that control the mountain. She admits that road closures or shutting down attractions impact the tourist industry, but maintains that “the relationship is excellent” between VisitRainier and the National Park Service.

Unfortunate things will occur when dealing with Mother Nature in a mountain environment, Nelson said.

“From a business standpoint, it comes with the territory when you live in a

gateway community – when you live in these extreme climates,” she said. But that doesn’t mean VisitRainier will always be quiet; the organization will speak up,

Nelson said, on behalf of those who keep the operation afloat.

VisitRainier continues to grow, with 62,000 website visitors in August.

2010-11 ski season. The slopes were kept open until July 16, a Crystal Mountain record.

Weather patterns show the 2011-12 season could be another long one, Hyatt said.

Despite a lingering downturn in the overall economy, Crystal Mountain is moving ahead with a master development plan that includes several new chair lifts and a hotel that would be owned and operated by the resort and its parent company, Boyne USA. Hyatt said the economy has periodic peaks and valleys, but, at Crystal Mountain, “the main thing that impacts ticket sales is the weather.”

But that’s nothing compared to the winter months, when the list balloons to more than 600 employees, both full- and part-time. Approximately 200 people find work as ski instructors, she said.

As is true in all mountain communities, the economy is tied to the weather. And, in that regard, Crystal Mountain was rewarded handsomely during the

It wasn’t the dark clouds threatening rain that spoiled Sumner High’s Homecoming football game. It was the Clover Park Warriors.

For a while, the Spartans enjoyed a comfy 14-7 lead, even when the Warriors scored halfway through the third quarter to make it a 14-13 the Spartans were confident.

The Bonney Lake Panthers slipped from the ranks of the unbeaten Thursday night, suffering a 2-1 setback at the hands of the Auburn Mountainview Lions.

The Panthers jumped on the scoreboard first, receiving a goal from Kassandra Blakely in the 25th minute. The host Lions tied the game shortly before intermission, then won on a goal at 74 minutes.

Enemy territory treats Panthers poorly

A confident and undefeated 4-0 Bonney Lake High football squad ventured into enemy territory Saturday evening, entering the gridiron fray with Auburn Mountainview’s Lions at Auburn Memorial Stadium and absorbing its first loss of the 2011 campaign 33-28.

It also was the South Puget Sound League 3A opener for the Panthers.

Bonney Lake seemed to almost to jinx itself with a sense of false confidence from the game’s outset, when it scored on its first

play from scrimmage to jump to a 7-0 upper hand.

After holding Auburn Mountainview’s powerful offensive charge at bay in the Lions’ opening offensive series, Bonney Lake ball carrier Joey Surber took a hand off at the BLHS 44-yard line, broke free from a pride of Lion defenders and galloped 56 yards for a touchdown.

Surber accounted for 130 yards on the ground in the battle.

But the party was just getting started for the Lions. Bonney Lake had a

The Sumner High cross country squad remained undefeated in South Puget Sound League 2A, beating Clover Park and Franklin Pierce on the Spartans’ 5K Cascadia course Thursday.

Sumner won by default over Clover Park in both boys and girls races, as the Warriors were unable to field an entire team. The Spartan boys prevailed over Franklin Pierce 22-34, while the SHS girls edged out the Cardinal runners 25-30.

Franklin Pierce boys finished first and second, but SHS proved to be more balanced as senior Cory Brandt completed the course with a clocking of 17 minutes, 22 seconds, good enough for a third-place showing.

He was followed by cohorts Arturo Perez and Reid Selmer who claimed fourth and sixth places with times of 17:58 and 18:11, respectively.

The grouping was even tighter for the Spartan girls.

Gabby Phelps finished first at 20:05, but right on her heels were Abi Hensler in third at 20:38; Natasha Wilson, fifth, 21:59; Robi Long, eighth, 22:56; and Amanda Riley, 10th, 23:14.

The Sumner High School tennis team extended its hot start, taking out every first-place team the schedule could throw at it.

The run began Sept. 23 with a 3-2 victory over Eatonville, which at the time was in first place. With Sumner’s victory, Franklin Pierce moved into sole possession of first place, with a Sept. 27 matchup against the Spartans looming.

Sumner dropped both singles matches to Franklin Pierce, but the No. 1 doubles team of Hunter Bleha and Brandon Walsh played to a 6-1, 6-2 victory and the second doubles team of Zak Landers and John Fordice won 6-4, 6-2, leaving the match-deciding game to the third doubles team of Alex Landes and Max Friendlie.

The Bonney Lake Panthers girls golf team hit low, then high this week, losing to Enumclaw High 131-107 and beating Peninsula High 135-109.

The Hornets’ Tiffany Wilkening earned medalist honors with a 6-over par 41. Anna Babbitt was the Panthers’ top performer with a 46.

Peninsula’s Rachel Lewis was the medalist during the Thursday match.

The boys team lost both matches, 91-40 against Enumclaw and 88-53 against Peninsula.

Kash Kolterman led the Panthers at Enumclaw, shooting 43.

Josh Journey led the team against Peninsula with a 41.

Landes and Friendlie came up big, rallying to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory and

giving the Spartans another triumph.

Sept. 28, Sumner took on Washington, which was tied with Eatonville and Franklin Pierce when the week began.

Once again, the scrappy Spartan team was able to pull out a 3-2 victory, with the big win coming from Fordice, who played to a 6-4, 6-0 victory in No. 2 singles.

Friday, the Spartans welcomed White River to the courts and pulled out a 4-1 win to keep their streak alive.

The Spartans picked up wins from Landers at first singles and Fordice at second singles as well as wins at first doubles by Bleha and Brandon Walsh and by Josh Seerden and Scott Brown at third doubles.

Sumner hosts Clover Park today, Wednesday, and Steilacoom on Friday.

Homecourt victory over Seahawks

The Bonney Lake boys tennis team picked up a 3-2, home-court victory Sept. 28 over the Peninsula Seahawks.

Both Panthers singles players dropped their matches, but the dou-

bles teams picked up the slack.

In No. 1 doubles, Devin Crump and Zach Volin picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win while the second doubles team of Sam Davidson and Spencer Workman won their match 6-2, 6-2.

The third doubles team of Nathan Scott and Colton Moroles also played their way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The Panthers have a full schedule this week. There were matches against Enumclaw and Decatur this week before home matches at home against Auburn Mountainview today, Wednesday, and Puyallup on Friday.

The Spartan teams have a busy week. They faced White River Monday and Fife Tuesday and will take on Franklin Pierce Thursday.

Dazzling victories on home and away pitch

The front-running 4-0 Sumner High soccer squad trimmed Fife High 2-1 in a Sept. 27 shootout scenario at Sunset Chev Stadium and then proceeded to bludgeon Steilacoom on the road.

After notching a 2-1 triumph in front of the Spartan faithful earlier in the week, Sumner traveled to Steilacoom’s pitch, where it was slow torture for the overwhelmed Sentinels.

Sumner had its way with Steilacoom from the outset. Junior defender Krista Morford got the onslaught started 10 minutes into the lopsided affair, when she took an assist from teammate Kaitie Huff and drew first blood as she launched a rocket into the Steilacoom goal frame to make it 1-0 Sumner.

Steilacoom kept things respectable in the first half of play as Megan Fenton booted in the first of her trio of goals at the 15 minute juncture. The Sentinels rung up their solitary goal a few seconds before the break and Sumner held a 2-1 advantage at the half.

Sumner came back to quickly dispatch Steilacoom with an offensive assault

during the second forty.

Sumner gleaned scores from Brooke Lancaster, Kaylie Rozell, Ellie Degoede, followed by the completion of the triple crowning from the red hot Fenton, who is a squad captain.

As the second half of the regular season commences in SPSL 2A this week, the Spartans find themselves with a full slate.

Sumner already welcomed the Cardinals of Franklin Pierce Tuesday night, with the results of that contest arriving to late to include here.

The true challenge this week for Sumner will come when the SHS crew visits White River’s fierce and torrid contingent Thursday at 7 p.m.

When these two top notch clubs squared off in early September, Sumner was hosting and claimed a 1-0 squeaker in overtime after Brenna Allsop fired in the deciding goal with the score knotted at zero in the defensive skirmish.

Consequently, it will be an angry hive of Hornets buzzing in Buckley, eagerly aspiring to sting the wary invading soldiers of Sparta with a vengeful defeat.
