opened the other four locations, in Belfair, Port Orchard, Wauna and Silverdale. “It’s family,� Anderson said, “Very close-knit family.�

While more than one restaurant might mention family as part of its history, considerably fewer would lay claim to a sunken boat.

Soon after opening, Anderson started delivering his pies by boat around Hood Canal. The service proved popular, Anderson said.

With the Seabeck Marina literally next door to his business, Anderson said, he could be on the water fast enough to make it worthwhile.

Since then, Anderson said, he has delivered to Quilcene, Dabob Bay, Camp Parsons and most places in between. The farthest he’s ever been called out, Anderson said, are Foulweather Bluff on the north end of the Kitsap Peninsula and Lilliwaup on the south end of Hood Canal. “I’ve done boat-to-boat, boat-to-

beach, boat-to-sailboat-under-sail,�

Anderson said.

Now and then, Anderson said, in addition to pizza orders, he would receive calls of a more urgent nature as well. More than a few times, he said, he has been called out for canoers in trouble, other boaters out of gas and even once a sinking boat. “[The nearby state park] would call here because they knew we had a turnkey boat all gassed up to deliver pizzas,� Anderson said.

But, Anderson added quickly, “I’ve been rescued as many times as anyone else out there. In the boating community one hand helps the other. That’s one of the nice things about Seabeck. If you need help, you usually get it.�

Anderson’s own brush with the watery depths came early on, when a 1991 winter storm sunk his tied-up delivery boat. He quickly replaced that boat, he said, and today has two, a 20-foot Skagit and a 10-foot craft he built himself.

With the demolition of the Seabeck Marina, sea-slung pies had to go on hold, Anderson said. Hauling a skiff over the beach and rowing out to the anchored delivery boat just add too much work to the delivery.

Anderson said he hopes to get the service running again as soon as the new Seabeck Marina is completed.

Anderson decided he wanted his own restaurant while he was working for another restaurant, McDonalds. He read up on how to start and run a business and tried to decide what kind of restaurant he wanted to run. He said he considered a burger restaurant and a vegetarian theme before finally settling on pizza.

Along the way, Anderson said, he set a friend up in Montana.

Now there are two in that state, in Broadus and Miles City. The two are separate businesses, he said, and share only the Seabeck Pizza name.

Between the two of them, today Anderson and wife Kelly work at their Chico and Seabeck restaurants almost every day. Celebrating their 23rd year in business this winter, Anderson said he still likes working in the kitchen along with taking the time to trade tales with customers. “You’ve gotta stick to it, believe in it,� Anderson said. “You gotta work your butt off, and you can’t just be a taker. You’ve got to give back to the community.�
