CREATING HORROR, TERROR Businessman, author brings deadly zombie tales to life in his books

The zombie apocalypse might not have happened yet, but judging by the undead’s prevalence in popular media, you’d be hard pressed to know this.

Everywhere you look these days – comics, novels, movies and television – zombies are evident, shuffling across the landscape in search of brains, threatening humanity.

Last weekend the shambling horde descended on the SeaTac Hilton for ZomBcon, an annual zombie convention featuring a who’s who of horror actors, authors, moviemakers and fans.

Coastal Farm & Ranch, one of the largest retail supply chains in the Pacific Northwest, has signed a letter of intent to purchase the former Walmart store property at 1425 Supermall Way in Auburn.

Auburn officials on Tuesday confirmed the deal, which the City described in a letter sent to Walmart’s corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. “From Auburn’s perspective, this is a major retailer that will provide an excellent source of sales tax dollars, and we understand it will mean up to 75 or more local jobs,” said Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis.

According to its website, the Albany, Ore.-based company offers clothing, hardware, tools, welding and automotive equipment, farm equipment, tack, feed and supplements at stores throughout Washington and Oregon, among them outlets in a former Walmart store in Mount Vernon and in Yakima and Wenatchee. It also carries western footwear and fashion brands, including boots from top manufacturers like Danner, Justin, Georgia, Double-H and LaCrosse.

Coastal Farm & Ranch did not return calls Tuesday.

Community mourns, celebrates life of ‘Cam’

Cameron Christian lived life fully, swinging a bat, carrying his mitt, tossing a ball, looking for a game – smiling and always laughing.

He touched many lives.

In an overwhelming show

of heart, the Auburn community came together last weekend to remember and celebrate a young life tragically cut short.

More than 1,100 people – family, friends and supporters – packed the standing-room-only Auburn Performing Arts Center to

honor the life of Cameron, a 2007 Auburn High School graduate, two-sport star and youth leader who died in a single-car accident on Oct. 16.

“It’s just too hard to know that the final chapter of your book is being written,” he said. “This book is about the life you lived, the love, the integrity, the respect, the leadership, the getting along with everyone. This is about you raising the bar of success, not only for yourself but for your buddies.”

Cameron, 22, was remembered as a great son, friend, teammate and role model. The Seattle University senior was a talented baseball player Cameron whose potential Christian had yet been fully realized. A history major, he wanted to become a middle school teacher and someday, a college coach. His first dream was to make the majors.

The memorial was somber and at times, amusing.

Evoking tears and laughter from the audience, Debbie Christian shared how her good-natured son navigated life and their many bonds, including a mutual love for shoes.

“He liked to make sure all of his shoes and clothes matched in color,” she said. “Just recently he

was so excited because he got to go to the Nike employees store in Oregon. He sent me a picture of orange and white shoes. I texted him back, ‘You don’t have anything to match.’ He replied ‘I do now.’ ” Added Lynn: “No more walking in the door and tripping over your shoes.”

Debbie also shared the story of her 21-hour labor that brought Cameron into the world. Cameron, born on Feb. 7, 1989 in Renton, came into the world a fighter, pronounced a “miracle birth” by the doctor.

“Finally, we heard a tiny little

squeal,” Debbie said. “And the doctor declared, ‘I have never delivered a live birth with the (umbilical) cord wrapped so tightly three times. This really is a miracle.’ Cam did that for us the rest of his life. Whatever he did was miraculous.”

Cameron had a stellar high school career that included two years as a starter on the Auburn football squad and three years on the baseball team. He earned all-state honors as a left-handed pitcher and helped the Trojans finish second at state in 2006 and 2007.

Cameron attended Washington State University and Spokane Falls Community College before transferring to Seattle University as a junior last year. He was a Redhawks’ co-captain.

Kellen Kiilsgaard, a lifelong close friend, shared some memories. Kiilsgaard and Cameron were teammates on Auburn’s powerful football and baseball teams. They were leaders who got the most out of themselves and their teammates.

“It was no secret how Cam was such a competitor,” said Kiilsgaard, a senior outfielder at Stanford University.

Cameron attended Northwest Family Church (formerly Calvary Temple), was on numerous baseball teams throughout the region and was a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club where he spent time with a special 5-year-old boy battling brain cancer.

Perhaps Cameron’s father best summed up his son’s short but spirited life.

“You were a gift from God, and what a gift.”

Plaque ceremony to honor late teen The Auburn community will dedicate a plaque in memory of Dwight Clark at a 5 p.m. Sunday ceremony at Brannan Skate Park, 1055 28th S. NE. The public is invited.

Clark, an 18-year-old freshman at Western Washington University, accidentally drowned in Bellingham Bay on Sept. 26, 2010.

Sunday is Clark’s birthday.

Clark, son of RaeLyn Clark and George Clark, graduated with honors from Auburn High School.

He was artistic in drawing, filming, photography, and loved snowboarding and skateboarding. His talents and love of the Northwest resulted in the creation of his Forevergreen skate apparel business.

Clothing from Forevergreen will be sold at the ceremony with proceeds benefitting the Dwight Clark Memorial Skate Plaza.

Auburn awarded $20,000 grant for new playground Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! presented a $20,000 Let’s Play grant to the City of Auburn on Monday to support a new playground at Game Farm Park.

The City received the grant because it was selected as a 2011 Playful City USA community

by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization

dedicated to saving play.

The grants are part of the first Let’s Play initiative introduced last November – Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s three-year, $15 million commitment to KaBOOM! Through Let’s Play, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! will build or repair 2,000 playgrounds by the end of 2013, benefiting an estimated five million children across North America.

Snapple Group, was on hand Monday to present the check to Auburn during the City Council meeting.

The new playground will replace the worn, 28-year-old equipment at Game Farm Park.

It is anticipated that the new playground will attract more than 100 kids playing on the equipment daily. The playground could get more than 10,000 visits from kids over the course of the year, City officials estimated.

[ RETAILER from page 1 ] on its timelines. “Walmart has worked for more than a year now, collaborating with the City of Auburn to find a positive solution for its former store on Supermall Way,� said Jennifer Spall, director of public affairs and government relations for Walmart. “Walmart received considerable interest in the property, from numerous desirable retailers, and was deep into a potential transaction from a national retailer, which decided to reevaluate its newstore strategies in markets across the U.S. “While this was disappointing to everyone involved, Lewis we are pleased to announce that (Walmart) has secured a letter of intent for the purchase of the (property),�

Spall said. “The letter has been signed and approved

by Walmart, with Mayor Pete Lewis officially endorsing the sale of this Walmart property in a letter we received this week. The sale of the property will constitute our compliance with agreements made with the City previously.�

The agreement now enters into a due-diligence period, and the sale of the property is expected to close early next year. “A struggling marketplace when it comes to retail-property demand across the region, and particularly in Auburn, has impacted even further the sale or re-lease of this property,� Spall said. “But we are pleased that we have reached this agreement.�

Concerned that the vacant store would become

derelict, City officials earlier this year threatened to revoke the new Walmart superstore’s occupancy permit if Walmart failed to fulfill the obligations spelled out in a 2006 development agreement between it, Walmart and the SuperMall’s owner, Glimcher Properties.

That agreement committed Walmart to find a new tenant for the store within five years or raze the building and build new ones.

The agreement also gave the City a choice of saying yes or no to any uses of the 150,000-square-foot building, which the retail giant vacated when it opened the superstore north of the Regal Auburn Stadium 17 theaters in 2010.

According to the City’s letter, Walmart’s sale of the site to Coastal constitutes its final compliance with the settlement agreement, if the deal closes by Jan. 25, 2012. But if the sale falls through, the City will consider Walmart in breach of the agreement and subject to payment of damages.

Lewis said Walmart and the SuperMall’s owner plan to work together to find places within the mall’s $25 million expansion plans for some of the businesses that approached Walmart in recent months, asking about the empty store. “It appears that we will get more businesses here by the process that Walmart went through to identify potential suitors for that site,� Lewis said. “Walmart will be acting as a conduit to see if they would be good partners. These would be welcome additions at the SuperMall.�

Fewer violations at red light photo enforced intersections and school zones can only mean one thing, Auburn police say – those cameras have reduced traffic violations in the City and enhanced public safety.

Thus the Auburn Police Department concludes in its latest report card on the program, “Photosafe Auburn, Third Quarter Report, Jan.-June 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011.� “It’s working,� Assistant Police Chief Bob Karnofski told Monday’s meeting of the City’s Municipal Services Committee. “We never really set this up for making money. It was a

public safety thing, and the fact that the amount of fines that we have continues to go down and the violations and the amount of revenue that we’re not seeing speaks for the program.�

Police Chief Bob Lee said that prior to the program, the City had been fielding an enormous number of citizen complaints about red-light runners. “We just don’t hear the red-light complaints any more,� Lee said.

The City launched the program on June 30, 2006 at two intersections: Auburn Way South and 4th Street Southeast; and Auburn Way South and M Street Southeast. It added Harvey Road

www.auburn-reporter.com Among those in attendance was Auburn native Chuck Messinger, 38, owner of comic book shop Comic Evolution and co-founder of Creator’s Edge Press, a graphic novel publisher that focuses on horror genre novels.

In addition to his business duties, Messinger finds time to write graphic novels, including zombie tales “Breakfast with Rob” and “Cauliflower for Al Jordan.”

Growing up, Messinger wasn’t like other kids.

While most of the children in the neighborhood were outside doing kid things, Messinger was often inside his mother’s house on D Street in Auburn, getting his horror fix.

“When all the other kids were outside playing, Chuck was on the couch with a Stephen King book,” said Messinger’s mom, Vicki Stiltner.

For Messinger, the classic horror stories of authors like King, John Saul, Jonathan Mayberry and H.P. Lovecraft, fired up his imagination, fueling a desire to create his own horror tales.

“I frequented Comstock’s (bookstore) pretty much daily throughout the summer,” Messinger said. “I’d say he was the guy who supplied

me with more reading material than anybody else on the planet. Anytime I could get my hands on a used paperback, anything affiliated with the horror or sci-fi genres, I was all over it.”

By the time he was 14, Messinger’s attention had broadened to comic books.

“I was a late bloomer,” he said.

He made up for lost time once he picked up his first comic, Alpha Flight No. 10.

“I fell in love with them,” he said.

Although he soon threw himself into collecting comics, eventually acquiring a big enough stash to quit his job in hotel management and open Comic Evolution in Puyallup in 2007, horror remained his first love.

Impact movie One night while perusing TV channels, Messinger stumbled upon a movie that would forever alter the way he looked on horror – George A. Romero’s 1968 zombie classic, “Night of the Living Dead.”

“It’s still my favorite, because it felt real,” he said.

“Trapped in a house with shambling hordes. Romero really is the king when it comes to zombies. Every movie of his I’ve seen takes a different group of people and puts them in that same ‘what would you do?’ scenario.”

According to Messinger, the realness of the zombie genre, the possibility that “hey, this could happen,” is the key to the current popularity.

“Coming from my standpoint, the zombie thing is more realistic,” he said. “It’s something that could actually happen, a viral outbreak. It goes back to the days of paranoia over nuclear fallout and radiation. The zombie thing seems a little more palatable to me than somebody turning into a wolf or a bloodsucking vampire.

Zombies are just an extension of humanity. And there are just thousands of ways people have translated it.”

For Messinger, his zombie tales are translated through a filter that relies heavily on humor.

After forming Creator’s Edge Press with cohorts Travis Bundy, Josh Cantrell and Shawn Gates, he published “Breakfast for Rob” and “Cauliflower for Al Jordan.”

In “Breakfast with Rob,” he tells the story of two friends who meet for breakfast weekly. Things go awry, however, when one of the friends arrives for breakfast as a zombie. “(‘Breakfast with Rob’) is almost a therapeutic story for me because the two main characters in that are

me and my best friend,” he explained. “It’s told from my perspective. My friend and I used to meet for breakfast every Saturday, play cribbage and hang out at the same place. But as he got married and had kids, all of sudden he didn’t have time anymore. So I started telling that story and changed the ending with disastrous results.”

The novel, with art by Thiago Castro, was nominated for a Toonie award, which recognizes Pacific Northwest cartoonists and comic book authors and artists.

More importantly for Messinger, it was acknowl-

edged by Romero, the master of the zombie genre.

“He really liked it,” he said. “He actually made me sit down next to him while he read it. That made me giddy like a school girl.”

In his second book, “Cauliflower for Al Jordan,” with art by Dario Reyes, Messinger tells the tale of zombie Al Jordan, who has mistaken cauliflower for brains. After consuming the vegetable, the zombie begins to regain some of his humanity.

And for Messinger, it’s humanity that is the real secret to the popularity of the genre, not the zombies.

“That’s one thing that kind of gets lost in the mysticism of the vampire stories. It’s no longer about the human element, it’s about the supernatural element,” he explained. “I don’t think the zombie genre is necessarily focused on the supernatural element of it. It’s about human survival. And there is just an appeal to that.

“Everybody has a comfort zone, and thinking about yourself outside of that comfort zone is more scary than vampires or werewolves are ever going to be.”

Too much liquor: 3:53 p.m., 2455 F St. SE. A drunken male was

knocking on doors and windows of the Kona Kai Apartments, sufficiently riling up residents to call 911 and complain that they did not know blotto boy.

Theft: 7 a.m., 30620 116th Ave. SE. A student at Rainier Middle School allegedly stole another student’s iPod containing the victims’s school locker combination. The young suspect then allegedly used that combination to break into the victim’s locker and swipe its contents, including her schedule, which school authorities found in the suspect’s binder. Police are forwarding the case to the King County Juvenile Prosecutor for consideration of charges.

The Pacific mayoral race has turned nasty.

Not all sides are playing nice.

The small, blue-collar town typically rears its ugly side during the political season. This fall’s mayoral mess is no different.

“Pacific is no Pleasantville,” said one resident, tending to her yard on a sun-splashed Tuesday. “Just look down 3rd Avenue.”

Campaign signs decorate street corners, occupy businesses and clutter front yards, reflecting three forces hard at work. Their messages are magnified in bold letters and amplified by gossip circulated throughout the small community of 6,000 residents.

There are signs supporting Richard Hildreth for a third term, an effort endorsed by the firefighters union. Signs support challenger John C. Jones, the City Council president, who has run a relatively clean campaign seeking change and new leadership.

Then there are signs that appear to be the makings of a smear campaign against Hildreth.

And the hostile rhetoric is upsetting residents and turning off voters.

“They are just attacking all the time.

Enough is enough,” said Vicky Nelson, a 12-year resident. “I’m just tired of the dirty politics. They don’t stand on a platform, say what they can do better. They just want to jab, annihilate and attack.

“It’s got to stop. They’ve got to grow up.

Who would want somebody that has that kind of mentality in control of our little city?”

The Nov. 8 general election cannot come soon enough.

This race is replete with characters.

Cy Sun, a write-in mayoral candidate, claims corruption in City Hall under Hildreth’s watch. His signs, circulated fliers and other paper propaganda say so.

Robocalls have jingled home phones.

Meanwhile, a website – anybodybutrich. com – has been “dedicated to the residents of Pacific.” Its producer, a disgruntled local businessman, wants a new man in office, claiming Hildreth has abused his privileges by misusing a City credit card for personal use and to advance a second career in emergency management.

“Check it out. (The website) speaks for itself,” said Jerry Eck, owner of Valley Recycling, a Hildreth antagonist who is supporting the ouster of the mayor. “I wouldn’t call it a campaign. … We think he should be compelled to repay that money to the general fund.”

A recent investigation cleared Hildreth of charges in credit-card-gate.

“They declined to prosecute,” Eck insisted.

Eck said he has filed a lawsuit against Hildreth for his alleged misuse of the credit card.

We need aggressive councilmembers tackling problems In regards to the letter from David Hines (“Time for new ideas on City Council,” Auburn Reporter, Oct. 21), Mr. Hines felt John Hayes Holman and Wayne Osborne presented well-thought-out ideas and plans at the debate for the City of Auburn. He felt Virginia Haugen and Frank Lonergan were dour, negative, taking cheap, unwarranted shots at the Auburn Police Department.

Your car has a blown engine.

Your children are using drugs.

You have prostate cancer. Your home is being foreclosed … all these are negative problems.

And, no, no, no, don’t tell me about them.

Citizens must get over the idea that bringing up subjects that could be or are problems is a negative act. Do you want councilmembers who are telling you what you want to hear, or councilmembers who are aware of problems and bring them to the attention of the citizens of Auburn?

As for Haugen’s remark regarding “the City has no money,” my understanding is that is the case. So trying to make plans without money in the budget is something even President Obama is struggling with on a national basis, along with most of the rest of the world.

If Lonergan thinks there is a problem within the Auburn PD, I am certainly behind him suggesting that this be investigated.

Politics unfortunately has the power to make some things public, and for many reasons keep some things hidden from citizens. We need aggressive, strong, assertive, people on the Council who are seeking out the problems that Auburn citizens should be aware of.

I am sure we will hear the long endured, usual political promises and pledges from all of the upcoming candidates in the next year.

Mr. Hines, I suggest if you want to hear only the standard propaganda from Council candidates, I am sure you will get your wish. And, of course, there is always the warm and fuzzy Disney Channel.

As a voter, I would rather hear the problem we should be solving, and having councilmembers watching my back.

Wales will be great for Auburn We are lucky to have Largo Wales running unopposed for City Council Position 1. She has the energy and fire in her belly to be a huge addition.

Largo is willing listen to all and take the ordinary citizens’ concerns to the Council meetings.

We are lucky to have a person like Largo who cares deeply about the future of the city. We all want Auburn to grow and flourish in the best possible ways.

Let’s be positive I am very familiar with the politics going on at our City Council meetings with Mayor Pete Lewis and Frank Lonergan and Virginia Haugen. It seems Lewis has accused them of being too negative. But the fact remains, that if Pete would give them some positive outlook on the economy as it stands in Auburn, they would have a more positive attitude toward him.

Pete needs a reality check on the status of Auburn’s economy.

I see a lot of wasted funds in downtown Auburn. You should be making Auburn a safe place and concentrating less on its beauty, so to speak.

Don’t grow old alone

While people 65 and older account for 12 percent of the population, they represent 16 percent to 25 percent of the suicides.

Four out of five suicides in older adults are men. And among white men over 85, the suicide rate – 50 per 100,000 men – is six times that of the general population.

Older widowers and divorcees are at the highest risk. When wives die or move away, their husbands’ social connections often cease as well, especially when the women did most of the social networking. “Men are poorly prepared for retirement and don’t know how to fill in the hours and maintain a sense of usefulness when they stop working,� said Dr. Martha L. Bruce, a professor of sociology and psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. “Many older people despair over the quality of their lives at the end of life.

(We) think that sadness is a hallmark of depression. But more often in older people it’s anhedonia – they’re not enjoying life,� Dr. Bruce added.

Conversely, having loved ones to spend time with, making new friends and sharing experiences and interests with others can help decrease the susceptibility to loneliness, depression and illness.

Nurturing new relationships and even falling in love again can bring back a renewed zest for life.

Research has shown that seniors who remain sexually active enjoy better physical and emotional health than those who do not, according to Dr. Andrew Weil, professor of medicine and

People who are lonely and isolated in their senior years tend to be in poorer physical and mental health than their contemporaries who are in loving relationships.

These are the findings of a recent study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior that investigated links between social connections and health in older adults. “Feelings of loneliness and isolation can affect older adults’ health in a number of ways.

They can, for example, create stress, lower self-esteem or contribute to depression, all of which can have physical health consequences – either by affecting a person’s lifestyle choices or through direct effects on the body,� said Dr. Erin York Cornwell, a sociology professor at Cornell University and lead author of the study report.

Social isolation may even shorten your life expectancy, according to Dr. James Lynch, author of “The Broken Heart: The Medical Consequences of Loneliness.� Human beings are social creatures throughout their lives.

As people grow older, their need for social interaction remains the same, but their ability to satisfy this need may become diminished: They retire and lose contact with former co-workers; their children grow up and move away; they become widowed or divorced; their circle of friends shrinks.

As a result, many elders find themselves increasingly deprived of the important benefits of companionship.

Life becomes less satisfying and loses its meaning.

Consequences are often severe depression and lack of will to live. “Suicide is more common among older Americans than any other age group,�

director of the Program for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and best-selling author of numerous books on health and wellness, including “Healthy Aging – A Lifelong Guide to Your Physical and Spiritual Well-being.� “The youth culture would have us believe that sexual pleasure is the birthright of the young, that old people shouldn’t be thinking about

sex, and that imagining old people having sex is distasteful. None of this is true. (Physical contact) is a basic requirement for optimum health,� he added. “This need does not diminish with age.�

Thankfully, the baby boomers are less inhibited in this regard than previous generations may have been. Today’s 55-plus crowd definitely does not think the party is over any time soon. And they know where to look for love in all the right places – via the Internet, of course.

Memberships of dating sites are booming, and the older demographics are growing the fastest. “With so many older Americans unattached, living independently into their later years, and increasingly comfortable using the Internet, they, too, are logging on for love,� observed Stephanie Rosenbloom in an article for the New York Times (Oct. 6), titled “Second Love at First Click.�

Not everyone is looking for true love, let alone marriage. But companionship and romance are in high

demand and the dating industry is happy to help.

Living longer and healthier as we grow older through sound nutrition, physical exercise and mental activity is very important, but it’s only a worthy goal if the experience is enjoyable and gratifying – and that includes love.

Keeping things in balance: Institute offers tips on fall prevention Falls are the most common cause of injury in the United States, particularly among older adults.

Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a slip on wet or icy pavement or a trip on a rug or stairway, the risk of bruises, broken bones and back and head injuries is significant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people fall due to a lack of attention, rushing around or accidental situations, but some individuals are actually at greater risk for falling,â&#x20AC;? said Joseph Caccavo, physical therapist at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Older adults, as well as those with a history of low blood pressure, stroke or neurological disorders, vision deficits or balance problems, as well as those taking certain medications, all face greater challenges.â&#x20AC;?

The good news is that there are ways to minimize the risk of falling by making simple changes around the home and workplace, and improving balance with proper training and exercise.

To help reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls and improve balance, Kessler Institute offers the following recommendations:

The Touch of Home Tuesday Club donated 240 caps this week to Click for Babies, a program aimed to raise awareness about infant crying and the risks of shaken baby syndrome.

The caps will be distributed to SBS-affected families at birthing hospitals throughout the state.

Auburnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tara Mitchell, founder of nevershake. com and member of the Washington State Shaken Baby Task Force, was on hand at the Pacific Community Center on Tuesday to accept the donation for the statewide campaign. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is very much appreciated,â&#x20AC;? Mitchell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The

club here does so many things for the community.

They really stepped up.â&#x20AC;?

Mitchell is the mother of Kyle, a shaken baby syndrome survivor, abused

by Mitchellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first husband in 1999.

Tara maintains a bright outlook as she leads a campaign to help others. Her son has made significant strides since those terribly difficult days as a baby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am one of the lucky ones,â&#x20AC;? Tara said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My son survived his assault â&#x20AC;Ś even though he still has developmental and behavioral challenges.â&#x20AC;?

Be at the table for Auburn In response to the letter ("Haugen listens to our needs," Reporter, Oct. 14) that claimed Haugen was needed on the City Council because she was a voice for the people.

Anyone may attend the Council meetings, and there is an opportunity for you to take the podium and make your comments on an issue.

You may also request a packet that will tell you about the issues. This packet is given to the councilmembers on the Friday prior to the meeting. The important work of a councilmember is done when they perform their committee assignments and represent the City at the meetings. They need to be at these meetings when decisions are made.

I say again, that if Auburn is not at the table

The ugly campaign went a step further this week when Eck placed an electronic reader board, the one usually reserved for construction zones, on the front lawn of Howard Erickson, a retired glass worker who served three terms as Pacific mayor and two years on the City Council.

The sign flashed an antiHildreth message to passing motorists on Butte Avenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Look at this patched- up road?â&#x20AC;? Erickson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing gets done.â&#x20AC;?

The unkept roads upset Erickson, who questions the mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership and the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unwise spending. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The whole thing is a fiasco,â&#x20AC;? Erickson said.

And so too is a race that is long on accusations and attacks but short on ethics and fails to look at the real issues affecting Pacific.

Voters deserve better.

...obituaries Howard C. Hadley

Howard C. Hadley passed away October 19, 2011 at memorial Hospital surrounded by loved ones. Howard was born January 10, 1919 in Java, South Dakota, to Claud and Mae Hadley.

Howard served in the Army during WWII. Howard settled in Ellensburg and started his family and building homes, later this led him to starting up his own floor covering business in Auburn, Washington. Howard loved spending time with his family as often as possible, woodworking and traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. His last trip was to Samoa at which time all of his sons gathered for a father/son reunion.

Howard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Yakima. Howard is survived by his wife Rebecca of Yakima, sons; James Hadley, Seattle, George Hadley, Apia, Samoa, Kirk (Wanda) Hadley, Sumner, stepsons, Eric (Kari) Bowton, Spokane, Dan (Kim) Bowton, Kennewick, Brett (Amy) Bowton-Meade, Seattle, twenty grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sisters; Joyce Frederickson, Ellensburg, Irene Miller, Oregon, and Lois Sims, California. Ricky Alan Jenson passed away peacefully at home with family on October 20, 2011. He was born February 21, 1953 in Fergus Falls, MN. His family moved to Washington State when he was 13. He grew up in Auburn, WA. After he was married Rick moved to Buckley, WA to raise his family. He made his living at what he loved, carpentry.

His greatest love in life was his wife of 41 years, Trudy, his family, and a wealth of friends. You would always find Rick in his garage sitting in his chair visiting with friends, playing cards or constructing something out of wood, always with a smile to greet you. He was also a member of the Eagles.

Rick is preceded in death by his father Gene. He is survived by wife Trudy, daughter Jessica (Joseph) York, son Jeremy, grandson Kyle, granddaughters Breanna and Nicole York, mother Beverly, 4 brothers Randy (Martha), Mike (Vicki), David, Brad (Dana), sister Tracie (Scott) Lees, numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by Trudyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, The Ronningens.

AUBURN’S TIM CUMMINGS HONORED WITH WIBCA HALL OF FAME NOD Tim Cummings, former Auburn High School boys basketball coach and current Auburn School District assistant superindent, was honored last week with a selection to the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Cummings earned the selection for his 18 years at the helm of the Trojans basketball squad.

During his tenure, he compiled a 332-132 record and led the team to four state appearances, including a third-place finish in 1988. Cummings will be inducted into the hall at the WIBCA’s July luncheon.

It took five games to do it, but the Auburn Riverside volleyball team put away district rival Auburn 3-2 Tuesday at Auburn Riverside High School to grab the final berth into the South Puget Sound League sub-district tournament.

The tourney begins Saturday at Todd Beamer High in Federal Way. The Trojans (3-4 league, 5-9 overall) and Ravens (4-4, 6-7) traded blows in the match, with Auburn Riverside coming out on top, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-6 in a battle for fifth place in the SPSL North 4A. “We were both fighting for a playoff spot, so I knew it would go down to the wire,” Auburn Riverside coach Chris Levernz said. “Auburn’s really talented. They had a little momentum going into the game, so it’s what I expected.”

The Trojans were led by 6-0 senior outside hitter Isia Johnson, who had a match-high 30 kills and added 28 digs. Brooke Good, a 6-0 junior outside hitter, had 21 kills and 22 digs and 5-9 junior setter Kelsey Zager contributed 51 assists.

The win was Auburn Riverside’s second over Auburn this season, with the Ravens defeating their rivals 3-1 on Sept. 19.

“It makes a big difference (winning against your rival),” Leverenz said.

“And I think it would have been for them also. It’s like that big sister, little sister thing. It’s always been that way with us and Auburn.”

Wuerch agreed: “It just makes us want to win more because they’re our rivals,” she said.

The eighth-ranked Auburn Mountainview boys compete for a chance to move on to the state 3A champion-

ship in the Westside Classic district meet at Lakewood’s American Lake Golf Course on Saturday.

The Lions qualified as a team for the classic after a solid showing at

last Saturday’s 3A subdistrict meet. Auburn Mountainview took home second on the 5,000-meter course at Fort Steilacoom.

Client: I have 5 kids, all under the age of 18, and my ex-husband says that I cannot claim them because he earns more money? Is that true?

Attorney: No. Tax exemptions are to be divided in a way that is fair, but that also makes financial sense. In your scenario, the court may order that the father claim 3 and you claim 2, but then reverse in subsequent years.

I have had some cases where the parties agree to let the father claim all 5 children as exemptions, but then share the refund with the mother. This is rare and is usually only in cases where the exemptions claims by the mother would not result in a big change on the tax refund. I think that consultation with a CPA or tax consultant about how to divide the exemption is an important consultation that one should not neglect.
