Everyone’s favorite clinically depressed eight-anda-half-year-old will be brought to vivid life when ManeStage puts on “You’re a
Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The musical comedy features sad sack namesake Charlie Brown (Jay Henson), his carefree beagle Snoopy (Bryce Smith), as well as the rest of the ensemble cast of Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip. The musical was originally staged in 1967 and has since become a favorite of amateur and community theatre companies for its minimal set requirements
and manageable cast size. The story is a series of vignettes about the characters’ lives, hung on Charlie Brown’s concerns over whether the facets of his life make him a “good man,” as his friends tell him. “This is personally one of my favorite productions,” Director Brenda Henson said. “It’s a good show for families in general. Kids will love it, and parents will recognize the Peanuts charac-
ters they grew up reading. “Plus you get to see adults pretending to be children.” Admission is $16 for general admission, $13 for students and seniors, and $10 for children 10 and younger. The show opens Oct. 15, 7 p.m. at Sumner Performing Arts Center. It also runs Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., Oct. 21

Runners will compete in waves with up to 100 participants per wave. Waves will run every 30 minutes starting at 10 a.m. There will also be a junior race for ages 5 and up beginning at 9:30 a.m. The junior race will be 1-mile in distance and not timed. The course will

• The Fright Factory in Buckley continues its reign as one of the premier haunted houses in the region. The venue opens for business Oct. 1 and will run through Halloween night. General admission is $10, but guests can save $1 by taking a donation for the local food bank. Or, there is a coupon on the website, www.frightfactory.net, for $1 off. Days of operation and hours vary through the month; for details visit the website. • Maris Farms, the popular seasonal attraction on Sumner-Buckley Highway between Buckley and Bonney Lake, is back for another year of fun. The entertainment comes in all forms, from children picking a perfect pumpkin to the late-night frightfest in the haunted woods. Guests can enjoy the eight-acre corn maze, with its “Out of This World” theme, a courtyard full of activities for kids, peddle cart racing, monster truck rides, tube slides, a jumping pillow, pony rides and more. Pig races will again benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The haunted woods covers about five acres of corn and woods near the back of the property. Visitors stand in an old cattle barn as they wait their turn to be sent out into a maze of trails. The trails wind through various sets, which include scary characters lurking in the bushes, in the trees and around the corners. The farm opens for the season Oct. 1 and will oper-

Along with the farm’s large pumpkin patch, there will again be hayrides, a jumphouse and the slingshot. Also back again this fall is the farm’s haunted house, and monster truck rides through the mud behind the farm. Along with the haunted house is Farm Fresh’s Haunt Xtreme, which includes live actors on the weekends and is designed for “guys who want to be a little more scared,” according to owner Brad Ziemke. “I’d say last year one in five bailed out,” Ziemke said with a slight smile. But as always, the big draw is the farm’s corn maze, which this year features a “Great Pumpkin” theme. This year, along with the Charlie Brown-themed maze up front, which features a five-part puzzle that when completed earns a free pumpkin, a second maze was added to a back field, which Ziemke promises is

Lake Tapps is 100 years old and Cascade Water Alliance is ready to celebrate. Originally built as a reservoir built to turn turbines and generate power for the region, Lake Tapps has become a recreation destination for Pierce County, known for summer fun. This fall, the water purveyor is hosting a free centennial celebration of the construction of Lake Tapps with food, entertainment, tours and a history of the White River Project, including Lake Tapps and the old Powerhouse. The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Powerhouse, 2111 East Valley Highway in Sumner. Cascade is offering tours of the Powerhouse every half-hour from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Space on the tours is limited and available on a first-come, firstserved basis. The Powerhouse is not an ADA compliant facility, however and individuals interested in the tour are warned that there are a series of steep staircases and extensive walking on the tour. Members of the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society will also be on hand Oct. 1, with a series
of prepared displays and slideshows showing historic photos of the project and construction of the lake. Winona Jacobsen, author of “Images of the Bonney Lake Plateau,” which contains a chapter on construction of the lake, will also be on hand to sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the Historical Society. Food and entertainment is also planned for the day, including free picnic food, a taste of birthday cake for all and special activities for the kids, all to the sound of live, old-time music performed by the band 1928. The Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society and the Bonney Lake Courier-Herald are both co-sponsors of the event.

Since that time, the Plateau community has shown great enthusiasm for the event that it has grown into one of the most successful and well attended health fairs in King and Pierce counties. This year Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation and St. Elizabeth Hospital of Franciscan Health System has partnered to continue the tradition and offer a similar event this fall. Since this is the 20th annual event – we thought it was appropriate to make it a larger Expo and include a few more components. With joint efforts, we are expanding the Senior Health and Wellness Expo to be the Plateau Health and Wellness Expo. This year’s event will be open to all ages and is intended to provide a wider range of vendors, a lecture series focusing on all age groups, fitness demonstrations, safety components from the local fire and police departments and good-ol’ family fun for a day. One of the oldest traditions in the world takes place each year at Enumclaw’s Krain Cemetery. This year’s event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 1. The ceremony of lighting candles on the graves and praying the Rosary as darkness falls has been happening there for at least 123 years. It is an eastern European tradition that was brought over by the first Catholic settlers to the area. The community is welcome to join Sacred Heart Catholic Church in this tradition.
The fall season is a busy one for high school athletes everywhere – and our area is no diffferent. From Sumner and Bonney Lake to White River and Enumclaw, students can be found playing football, soccer, volleyball, tennis and golf. Or running cross country. After a brief hiatus, Plateau Community Players are center stage again. The Plateau-based community theater group is hosting auditions for a December production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” Plateau Community Players’ Dennis Riley and Stephanie Leeper said the group has been laying low for the past few years, but recently met to breathe life into its dormancy. The group went back to its roots for a fundraising event, a holiday classic it brought to the stage in the past. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a one-hour, kid-friendly show scheduled to open at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the White River High School theater. There will be additional shows at 1, 3:30 and 7 p.m. Dec. 3. Tickets are $5.
