The King County Prosecutor’s Office revealed June 29 that it won’t file criminal charges against Olenthis Woods in the shooting death of Shennon Shelton and the wounding of his brother, Gaston Shelton, May 1 outside of an apartment complex in Auburn.

According to the King County Prosecutor’s Office, the police investigation determined that Woods acted in defense of himself and others.

“We understand that the loss of Mr. Shelton’s life is truly tragic for his family and friends,” the prosecutor’s office said in a press release. “However, the evidence in this case dictates that criminal charges are not warranted.”

In this case, prosecutors said, Woods could and would claim that he had a lawful right to defend himself and his family members under state law.

Pioneer, district, City leaders step it up with walk challenge

At Pioneer Elementary School, taking the extra steps for fitness is a way of life.

It’s also a lot of fun, said first-grade teacher Marissa Spaid.

In addition to traditional recess, teachers at Pioneer Elementary School loose

their young ones from class once a day to walk, run, hop or skip for 15 minutes.

Pioneer administration calls it “structured recess.”

Really, it’s about getting the kids fit.

Teachers and staff can also get a bit “out of sorts” by the end of the year, said Pioneer Principal Debra Gary. So the school suggested a walking challenge

last year between teams of staff and teachers. Everybody wore pedometers to measure their steps during the day. Not only did walking perk up the weary, staff modeled good behavior to the kids.

It was such a smash hit that Gary, and teachers Spaid and Rochelle Thornhill decided to spread the fun, challenging the

Auburn School District administration and City of Auburn staff to a walking contest. They called it “Let’s Move!” after First Lady Michelle Obama’s fitness campaign for youngsters.

As before, walkers were to count their individual steps using pedometers, each walker’s steps being added to the team total.

“We’re always trying to promote health for our kids

and show them how walking improves their lives,” Gary said. “We wanted to extend that to the adults in the community. We thought if we could get them motivated and get them out and maybe grow that a little bit, we could show the kids that they’re not the only ones and that they can grow up to be in control of their own destiny. The purpose was to spread the movement of movement.”

On May 16, the mighty contest between Team Pioneer, Team Herren and the Team Lewis got underway.

Auburn’s information systems staff set up a website where all participants could log their steps and progress for each day. If somebody on a team could get another member of the community to walk with them that day, that would double their steps.

“How could you not win a contest where you get more people out walking?” asked Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis

Only one team, however, could claim the coveted golden cup by the contest’s last day on June 6, and it was Team Lewis, which tallied 19,738,164 steps. Team Pioneer came in second with 19,124,567 steps, and Team Herren finished third with 17,036,516. Team Lewis’ Ronda Stella logged a total of 1,244,504 steps, and as the team’s top stepper, won the prize of wearing jeans to work every Friday from June 10, 2011 to June 10, 2012.

All three teams combined steps nearly equal to the circumference of the Earth.

“We all won,” Lewis said.

“It’s been fun to see their competitive nature and to see how excited people got,” Spaid said. “I actually saw different community members at the grocery store wearing their pedometers, so it’s been exciting to see this movement expand.”

Major work to begin on environmental park

Construction will start in August on a key part of the Auburn Environmental Park between West Main Street and 15th Street Northwest — a 1,100-foot-long, elevated wooden boardwalk.

City Council members approved on Tuesday an agreement between the City and the builder, the Washington State Department of Ecology Washington Conservation Corps.

The cost of construction is not to top $45,000, according to City officials.

City officials determined that the project creates a special market condition that justifies awarding the contract outside of a competi-

tive bidding process.

Plans show the boardwalk running along most of the 1,200-footlong pedestrian trail, which connects West Main Street with the bird and wildlife viewing tower on Western Avenue. By elevating the boardwalk, City planners expect to minimize impacts to the wetlands and allow for year-round use of the trail, including the seasonal periods when water levels in the park are higher than usual.

Plans show the boardwalk as a six-foot wide, wooden structure atop pin pile foundations, with curbing on both sides and guard rails in places where it rises more than 30 inches above the ground, or where there are areas of seasonal

The ordinance defines a tasting room as a location separate from or on the same site as the production site, allowing customers to taste samples of wine, beer, or other alcoholic beverages, with a required state issued liquor license to operate. In addition to sampling of beverages, a

June 29 Shoplifting: 7:35 p.m., 762 Supermall Drive SW. Police arrested a girl for shoplifting an unidentified something or other at Walmart. She also had warrants for her arrest for shoplifting and was a reported runaway.

Vandalism: Overnight, 600 block of I Street Northeast. A woman told

Theft: 3 p.m., 1700 block of Auburn Way S. Prosecutors charged a girl with third-degree theft after she used her mother’s credit card account at a local drug store to buy items over a threeday period.

June 30 Theft of vehicle parts: Overnight, 101 15th St. NE. Somebody dug a catalytic convertor out of a vehicle parked overnight at the Metro Park and Ride. Police did not disclose a value for the missing parts.

Forgery: 11:07 a.m., 902 Super-

mall Way SW. Bad guys unknown committed forgery by passing a bogus $100 bill at a Shell station June 22.

Fireworks: 3:33 p.m., 600 block of K Street Southeast. A homeowner called to complain that someone at a neighboring house had sent bottle rockets aloft, said bottle rockets landing in her yard. Police arrived and seized a handful of bottle rockets but didn’t arrest the offender because of his tender age.

Vandalism: 10 p.m., 25 W. Main St. An Auburn inmate inflicted minor damage on a cell wall by scratching a small amount of grout off a brick wall.

Assault: 4:30 a.m., 333 15th St. NE. A man was assaulted in the parking lot of the Iron Horse Casino. Who assaulted him, how many assaulted him, why was he assaulted, was he injured, these are things police didn’t say.

Vandalism: Overnight, 1020 Lakeland Hills Way SE. Vandals unknown punctured a tire on a trailer in the parking lot of Lakeland Hills Elementary School.

Trespassing: 2:06 p.m., 2101 Auburn Way N. Having guzzled coffee at Taqueria El Rinconcito restaurant, a man refused to pay for said guzzling, so the management gave him the boot and told him to stay away.

Theft: 7:10 p.m., 2602 Auburn Way S. A woman left her shoes unattended at a sun shelter at the fireworks stands, and somebody walked off with them.

Purse theft: Overnight, 440 16th St. NE. While a woman was dancing at BB Magraws, somebody stole her wallet from a shelf.

Shoplifting: 10:25 p.m., 1702 Auburn Way N. Police arrested a teen and a shirtless man for shoplifting beer from Top Foods. The topless man had run from police upon contact, but an officer apprehended him after a foot chase that began on I Street Northeast and ended at an apartment complex on Harvey Road.

Police found the boy, two beers sticking out of his pockets, inside the store. The teen told police he had picked the suds up after his older companion fled. No charges were filed against the boy.

Fire & Rescue Blotter The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 202 calls for service between June 27 and July 4, among them the following:

June 29 Curtain fire: 4:39 p.m., (Algona).

Firefighters responded to the 100 block of Seattle Boulevard for a possible house fire. On location, firefighters found light smoke coming from the house. After further investigation, firefighters found a curtain that had caught fire, so they immediately removed it. The wall and a lighting fixture sustained light smoke damage. Nobody was hurt, and the occupants returned to their home. Investigation determined that the fire was accidental.

July 4 Disorderly conduct: 1:31 p.m., 4000 block of D Street Southeast. An unknown man in a vehicle exposed himself to a 17-year old girl walking on a sidewalk.

Fireworks: 9:02 p.m., 400 block of 21st Street Southeast. Police confiscated illegal fireworks from multiple people.

July 2 Apartment fire: 4:26 p.m., (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to the 500 block of F Street Southeast to tackle a fire in a second-story apartment. Units arrived to find an exterior wall fire rapidly spreading up an exterior doorway on a second-floor deck. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, limiting damage to the exterior wall and deck of the structure. Nobody was hurt, and no occupants were displaced. Investigation revealed that improperly discarded smoking materials had caused the fire.

CPR: 2:30 p.m., (Auburn). Valley Com dispatched firefighters to the Muckleshoot Casino, where they found a man had suffered a heart attack. The Casino EMT was first to respond and completed an assessment of the patient’s condition.

The EMT found the man pulseless and not breathing. He started CPR and applied an automatic external defibrillator to the man. A single shock revived him, whereupon King County Medics transported him to ARMC. The patient, a visitor from Michigan, was alert and talking to the firefighters.

Please, give a little bit of respect Jim Riggleman quit his dream job because he felt “disrespected.”

Riggleman was in the top tier of his career field as the manager of the Washington Nationals baseball franchise. He took the last-place Nationals from division cellar dwellers to contenders. Just after winning 11 of 12 games (including a sweep of the Seattle Mariners) he resigned.

For the last two years, he’s been working on one-year interim contracts. He made the Nationals respectable, but they were unwilling to respect him by giving him a longer term contract. After failing to negotiate an extension he said, “I’m too old to be disrespected” and left.

Sadly enough, respect is cheap to give away to those who merit it, but some managers hoard it like precious gems. I’d like to share a few creative and inexpensive examples of giving respect.

The former CFO of my small, but significant, division of a multi-national company left recently for health reasons. It would have been easy to give her a standard plaque, but the team gave her a unique gift that reflects her interests and reputation. One of her loves is cooking and many company events were graced with food that she had baked for the occasion. To celebrate her tenure her coworkers put together a cookbook with personal recipes – a unique gift, and a

Sometimes recognizing unique ways to show appreciation is just a matter of paying attention.

In the late ’80s, I was an Air Force captain and airfield manager in Germany. American TV was limited to one channel, the Armed Forces Network, which played news and a limited selection of programs usually six months behind their U.S. release dates. The Internet, in its primitive form, was probably not even in the dictionary.

One day my hard working chief dispatcher said, “I’d kill for an hour of MTV.” A month later, with the help of my brother back in the states, I handed him a VCR tape with six hours of MTV. When I managed a systems development group, I tried to celebrate special occasions in

ways that showed respect and appreciation. On the birthday of each team member we did something related to them. When a programmer from Louisiana had a birthday we cooked beignets, a special treat familiar to anyone who’s spent time in New Orleans. It was a mess of deep fat fryers and powdered sugar, but a measure of respect for a valued person.

When our programmer from Iowa had his birthday it was, of course, corn dogs.

Because the central technology of our division revolves around GPS, I tied it into the celebration for the completion of a major project. I gave each team member the coordinates, but not the [ more BROOKE page 6 ]

Inappropriate cartoon not funny Again, I am disappointed in the Auburn Reporter allowing a cartoon about life vests (Frank Shires, July 1).

Not only is it not funny, it is irresponsible to have the cartoon located within the article pertaining to Deanna and Paul White and their efforts to educate and inform people about how serious drownings and near drownings can be. They lost their child and will forever suffer the pain.

911 abuse In regards to the Auburn Reporter’s article on the use of fireworks in city limits (June 24), the mayor stated that he wanted people to be calling 911 to report anyone using fireworks. Now, if I’m not mistaken, we are told time and time again that 911 is for emergencies only.

To me, reporting the use of fireworks is not an emergency unless someone has been injured by them or a fire has been started by them.

Wouldn’t it have been better if the City had provided a phone number that people could call to report the use of fireworks?

Tribe’s fireworks decision backfires I am disappointed to hear that the Muckleshoot Tribe refused to cooperate in choosing not to do fireworks. Since they are a part of Auburn, it would seem to be a community service to their neighbors, given the noise and traffic, to do this as a goodwill demonstration, showing respect and consideration to the citizens of Auburn who voted not to have fireworks.

After explaining to a 10-year-old why we can’t – because now most people are not responsible enough with a device that can destroy other people’s property and homes – they don’t understand the double standard.

I understand it is a moneymaking business for the tribe, but they also have a responsibility to the community they live in. I would hope the tribe would in fairness take a second look at their decision

and set an example for the children in Auburn.

So much emphasis is placed on this fireworks subject when the real story about the Fourth of July and why we celebrate it is ignored.

Let us try to teach our children the real story behind the Fourth and focus on what the holiday is all about.

Loja Real Estate is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Loja Group LLC, a real estate investment management firm based in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Loja Real Estate purchased Lakeland Town Center from Lakeland Town Center II, LLC, which was managed by Tarragon Property Services of Sumner.

The sale price for the property is $39.4 million.

The transaction closed on June 17. The Lakeland Town Center purchase is Loja Real Estate’s third acquisition and the first outside of California.

Lakeland Town Center is a 125,000-square-foot community shopping center within Lakeland, a master-planned residential community with 10,000 residents.

Lakeland Town Center is anchored by a 67,000-squarefoot Top Food & Drug Store and occupied by a 27-tenant mix of retailers, restaurants and service businesses.

Restaurant gone sour I have been going to Las Margaritas restaurant in Auburn for over eight years, but today I decided not to return.

I went there with friends and when we received our bill, they overcharged us and charged us for things we didn’t order. They told us their prices were higher than other places. When I asked for prices, the waitress refused to tell us. She just said it was the same as any other.

When they were confronted, we were accused of being troublemakers, and said we were getting free stuff all the time. I have never asked for anything for free. When I confronted them about their comment about being a troublemaker, they denied it and told me to have a good night.

I used to love this place, but I will no longer go there because of the rude service.

My friends said they won’t go there anymore, either.

The Shelton brothers yelled for Woods to come outside, with Kevin and Danny Shelton moving to the side of the apartment as Gaston, Shennon and their cousin stayed at the front

entrance. Gaston banged on the front door while his cousin kicked over a garbage can, both demanding that Woods come outside.

Woods moved to the entrance of the apartment.

Danny could see through the window that Woods had a gun, so he yelled out to his brothers to warn them as Woods’ mother and sister continued to yell at the Sheltons to leave.

Woods came to the door and yelled at the men to back up. Shennon and his

Gaston also backed up a few feet, but then, in his own words “posted up” just outside Woods’ front door.

According to the release, Gaston told Woods, “then shoot me, shoot me, dude,” and Woods shot him once in the chest. He fell six to 10 feet from Woods’ front door. Shennon Shelton then lunged at Woods, who fired again, hitting him once in the head, dropping him just in front of the doorway. Danny Shelton then grabbed the gun from Woods as he tried to shoot at him. Danny Shelton hit Woods with the gun repeatedly as Danny’s cousin began kicking Woods. Woods’ mother and sister pepper sprayed Danny and his cousin. Woods ran away.

Shennon and Gaston were taken to the hospital, where Shennon died from the single gunshot to his head. Doctors saved Gaston.

Police found Woods hiding in a nearby yard. He acknowledged shooting the men and eventually led police to the gun he had used.

“Based on the facts of this case, prosecutors cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Woods was unjustified in his actions,” the prosecutor’s office concluded.

“Woods faced an imminent risk of being assaulted by the six men who had come to his apartment, likely to enact revenge for Woods’ earlier attack on Gaston Shelton.

Although the Sheltons did not carry any weapons, their likely intent to assault Woods allows him to defend himself and his family with force up to, and including, deadly force.”

Donna Johnson was living a sedentary life and contending with its consequences.

At the crosswords of a personal health crisis, the out-of-shape 38-year-old Auburn woman decided to do something about it. One day, she got up and began to jog around the spacious back yard of her West Hill home.

“I overdid it,” she recalled of her wobbly reacquaintance with aerobic exercise eight years ago.

“It killed me.”

But it eventually would put her back in the game, preventing her from taking doctor’sprescribed cholesterol medication and other potential remedies.

In the ensuing months and years, Johnson would rediscover the running trail, learn how to swim the length of a pool and hop on a bicycle to go the extra mile. She would shed 25 pounds, replacing fat with muscle by following a healthier diet and regimented exercise plan.

In essence, she would train and become a lateblooming triathlete, a good-natured competitor determined to finish strong and share the camaraderie with supportive family and warmhearted friends.

“My doctor triggered (the turnaround),” said Johnson, a wife, mother of two and a selfemployed accountant. “I said, ‘I’ve done this to myself. I can do something about it.’

“It’s about the fitness,” she added. “I now feel so much better physically, mentally, emotionally.

I think this is what I was meant to do. God made me an athlete. I just took 20 years off of it.”

Sunday to compete in the SheROX Federal Way Triathlon at Steel Lake Park. It will be Johnson’s fifth appearance in the sprint-distance race and her 15th career triathlon since she first took up the sport at age 40 with a trying debut in Lake Washington.

“It was cool … but overwhelming,” she said of her first dip into triathlon waters seven years ago. “It took 27 minutes for me to finish the halfmile swim.”

But Johnson would finish the 2004 Seafair Triathlon in one hour, 49 minutes.

Her second triathlon was the inaugural Federal Way event.

More races followed, and Johnson improved with repetition to become a consistent finisher in the top-third of her field.

Good stuff from someone who takes it all in stride.

“I’m a data freak,” admitted Johnson, who has chronicled her many races and experiences, replete with split times. “Competitive? Yes, I didn’t realize it, but (I am) in a good natured way.

“For me, it’s about people.”

Which includes two daughters and a husband who support her drive.

Johnson grew up in the area and graduated from Renton High School, where she competed in cross country and track and field. She was a sub-six-minute miler on the oval.

Loden and Johnson are part of the Y Tri Club, which holds community workouts. They join many others in the area in putting in the important training.

For Johnson, the triathlon at Federal Way is a special one for her. It is one of the few all-women’s sprint distance events in the area, and one she feels confident in doing her best. She posted a personalbest 1:43 in the 2005 race.

“I’m shooting for a top-third finish,” she said with a smile. “I love it.

It’s demanding in the fact the run is incredibly rolling (on the streets around the lake).”

A regular performer in local and regional events, Johnson will compete as long as she can, with a strong fan base behind her.

“I have the bug,” she said.

Frederick Arthur Thomas Sr., 80, died peacefully at home, Tuesday, June 28 after a valiant battle with leukemia. He was a devoted father, family man and friend. The Auburn area will receive $540,828 in funding for the Green River Gorge State Park – Icy Creek Trail Easement.

The state Recreation and Conservation Office released a complete list of projects funded through the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program at a recent hearing in Olympia.

The projects were funded after legislators reached across party lines during the 2011 session to save the WWRP and the vital conservation projects the program funds in communities around the state.

Green River Gorge State Park is a conservation area located in King County, 2.5 miles south of Black Diamond and eight miles north of Enumclaw off State Highway 169. Areas within the park include the Flaming Geyser Recreation Area.

But 20 years removed from her high school running days, the athlete in Johnson slowly resurfaced after her visit with her doctor.

She took up running then took swimming lessons before finding the bike to her liking. She even returned to high school and became a cross country coach at Seattle Christian, where she enjoys inspiring runners to greater heights.

Johnson stays fit and active with her family. On a whim, she isn’t afraid to try the local Five Mile Lake Sprint or enter the Seattle Rock & Roll Half Marathon.

“She has a competitive drive inside her,” said Cheri Loden, a fitness trainer at the Auburn Valley YMCA, a triathlete and a friend.

Zane Johnson

Heaven called home another angel on July 5th 2011.

Zane Johnson was born in Auburn WA, February 2, 1925 to Mildred and Bert Johnson. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1942 and excelled in track during those years. His love for the Northwest kept him near the Auburn area for 86 years.

A man who desired to help the common people, he graduated from the University of Washington And finished with Gonzaga Law School in 1951.

Zane proceeded to practice law in Auburn for 57 Years independently and as Copartner of the Johnson and Crane Law Firm. He also presided as a judge in the district and municipal court system. He was a civic leader as well as a member of St. Matthews Church. Under General Patton he fought in WW II as part of the US Army 10th Armored Division. He received a purple heart for this time of service. Zane was a very quiet man who was a continual thinker.

When He spoke, others listened knowing that he had given much thought to his words and advice. A positive man who never complained, even while battling his physical ailments. He especially loved all children, pets and traveling the world. His fondness for sports had him supporting the U of W Huskies as an avid fan and tailgater. Whether football, basketball, baseball or golf, he was cheering on his favorites each day.

Zane has been married to Joyce Hewes Johnson for the past 39 years. Zane had two daughters Carol (Johnson) and Tina (Coffman) and has 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Mildred and father Bert, brother Gale and daughter Carol.

He will be buried at Mt Tahoma National Cemetery following the service at St Matthews Episcopal Church in Auburn at 1100 on Monday July 11. We will miss your gentle spirit. You are now at peace and pain free. Arrangements by Klontz Funeral Home.

“I generally think it’s something where you can express what you’re feeling.

Heavy music does that,” Brown said. “So I think

there is a call for heavier music so people can put their frustration into something constructive, rather than destructive. Heavy music provides that outlet.”
