eographically speaking, Kitsap County extends from the windswept tip of Point No Point to the north and the Bremerton National Airport at its southern extreme, to the Southworth ferry terminal near its eastern boundary all the way west to the shores of Hood Canal. But it’s what’s in between that counts. And what’s in between is defined largely by water. Residents and visitors can pick a destination or just
hop in the car and drive, knowing that sooner or later they’ll end up at a bridge, a ferry or a beach. Planned or random, you can begin a cruise in the early afternoon and be home for dinner. With gas prices breaking records every day, Kitsap County and its marine bounty offer the perfect opportunity for an economical day trip from anywhere in the Puget Sound region. ➣ Page 9

Consider, for example, the path between the Bainbridge Island to the Southworth ferries. The 45-mile trip along Kitsap’s transportation spine takes a little more than an hour to complete and offers visitors a glimpse of many of the region’s treasures. From Bainbridge Island, follow State Route 305 until it crosses SR-3. Turn south and travel around 20 miles until the road sinks down and winds along the water. Bear left on SR-16 and pass through downtown Port Orchard. Go through the traffic circle and take Mile Hill Road until it, too, meets and hugs the shoreline. Turn left at the sign for the ferry. This is by no means a comprehensive tour of Kitsap County, of course, in that it bypass the tourist meccas of Winslow and Poulsbo, and only skirts the shopping paradise of Silverdale and Kitsap County’s largest metropolitan area in Bremerton. To say nothing the scenic vistas of Hansville, Seabeck and Olalla. Likewise, no trip to Kitsap would
be complete without a long pause in the picturesque Nordic-themed town of Poulsbo, or a spin around the Gorst inlet. Traffic can move slowly here — perhaps because the view is so distracting. This route is necessarily leisurely, as it represents the opposite of the shortest distance between two points. Consider how the people on the west side of Bainbridge Island can make eye contact with people in Manette and Manchester, yet it takes about an hour to drive from one place to the other. For this reason, Kitsap commuters need to adopt a relaxed attitude. Parts of Kitsap are reminiscent of objects in a mirror, as they are often not the same distance as they appear. Changes will continue. Gas prices will get higher before they go down, more people will move to Kitsap as new retail chains will deign to open local outlets. But such changes are gradual. While we’re waiting for them to occur, we might as well take a drive.

hough Kitsap County and the United States Navy have been linked together since the early 1900s, it’s only been in the last decade that the Navy’s strategic vision included expanding its fleet and support facilities ashore in Kitsap County. Today Kitsap County is host to five-major naval installations, each with its own distinct Navy mission, while working together as a total Navy team in what has become the third (behind Norfolk and San Diego) largest concentration of Navy commands in the United States. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard During World War I, the shipyard constructed many new ships including 25 subchasers, two minesweepers, seven ocean-going tugs, two ammunition ships and thousands of small boats. Between 1920 and 1940, the shipyard improved its capabilities, which enabled it to serve a key ➣

Today, there are two military bases — Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), a $1.5 billion ship maintenance, modernization and repair facility; and Naval Station Bremerton, a world class home port for the U. S. Navy Fleet. PSNS resides on 179 acres of property bordered on the south by Sinclair Inlet, on the west by Naval Station Bremerton, and on the north and east perimeters by the city of Bremerton. The depth of skill and experience inherent in the shipyard’s highly trained work force pays dividends to the fleet as they maintain the fleet throughout the world. PSNS is focused on providing quality, timely and cost efficient maintenance, modernization, and technical and logistics support to the Navy. Production workers are busily engaged with ship and submarine inactivation and recycling, maintenance, modernization, and repair activities.
Naval Station Bremerton Naval Station Bremerton was established on Oct. 1, 1998 to provide full support for the growing homeport presence and the regionalization of naval shore functions. Today, Naval Station Bremerton is the homeport to five Navy ships. In addition, it provides regional administrative and logistic support to other DoD activities in the Puget Sound area. Naval Station Bremerton is a full service naval installation supporting sailors stationed both afloat and ashore. There are six modern bachelor quarters on the base that offer quality accommodations to more than 1,800 sailors. Naval Submarine Base Bangor Covering more than 7,000 acres, Subase Bangor, located near Silverdale, is a balance of untouched forestland, award winning operational and administrative facilities, and attractive service and housing areas, bordered beautiful mountain ranges and the pristine waters of Hood Canal.

From World War II through both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, until January 1973, Bangor served as an ammunition depot responsible for receiving, storing, shipping and disposing of conventional munitions. The Navy announced the selection of Bangor as the homeport for the first squadron of Trident Submarines in 1973. On Feb. 1, 1977, Naval Submarine Base Bangor, was officially activated. Subase Bangor supports the Trident submarine and its associated systems which are quieter, faster, larger and more powerful than any other submarine in the U.S. Navy. Subase Bangor is the homeport for around eight submarines and also host to more than 64 tenant commands, most of which directly support the Trident submarine and its systems. As a major Navy underwater weapons engineering and test activity, Keyport has the assigned mission, organization, and resources to support the Fleet in undersea warfare systems and many other high-technology applications. Naval Hospital Bremerton The Naval Hospital Bremerton campus is located just off of State Route 3 between Naval Station Bremerton and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and Naval Submarine Base Bangor. As an integral part of Tricare
Northwest Region 11, the hospital’s staff, in partnership with Health Net Federal Services, administers professional care to approximately 56 thousand eligible military families residing within its area of responsibility. The center is adjacent to the original seven-story structure, providing one-stop service convenience for outpatient visitors. The hospital sits on a 49-acre campus that includes a drive-through satellite pharmacy for prescription refill pickups, a staff gym, Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, an optical shop, engineering buildings and Fleet Hospital Bremerton’s deployable medical systems tent structure training site.

Discover Kitsap said the beauty and unique island community of writers is a credit to their work. The arts are an organic part of the island’s composition. Artist Dinah Satterwhite knows first hand how the beauty of the island fosters the creative spirit. Satterwhite has been the director of the island’s semi-annual Studio Arts Tour for four years and has featured her work in the tour for 14 years. She said visitors are often enchanted by the opportunity of entering the artist’s workspace to see the raw materials and work behind the finished product. “It’s a chance to come talk to the artist, make a connection, learn what inspires them and see the beauty of

Discover Kitsap have worked hard to maintain beyond the busy ferry terminal that is only a five-minute walk to the island’s main street, Winslow Way. City planners have ensured that green space and parks are preserved while the island grows. Partaking in the annual Bainbridge in Bloom festival is one way to experience some of the island’s fondest treasures. This year the event will be held from July 8-10 and features seven gardens for patrons to enjoy. For visitors interested in tackling the island’s hills like a true local, try the 25-mile “Bike the Bloom“ route during the festival. Bicycles are available for rent during summer months at Classic Cycle, which
operates just across the street from the ferry terminal in the summer. Splitting up the ride into a weekend can add to a more leisurely experience and an opportunity to explore island living. The island has more than a dozen cozy bed and breakfast or rental homes to choose from, including Waterfall Gardens, which is a 5-acre hideaway complete with waterfalls and stunning views. For those who prefer a more farm-like experience, there’s Holly Lane Gardens, located only a few miles from the ferry but tucked away with a view of the Olympic Mountains. Keyport: Pride in community, military runs deep Known best for its Naval Undersea Museum and its military bearing, Keyport is a unique community with an at-ease maritime flavor. The small town of about 500 residents is perched on a head where Liberty Bay and Port Orchard Bay meet, across from Lemolo, Suquamish and Bainbridge Island, with views of sailboats and kayaks and marine life. Sense of community and military pride run deep here. Keyport is the home of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which provides fleet-readiness support for fleet training systems, land attack systems, mines, submarines, surface ships and torpedoes. In 1994, Vice President Al Gore presented Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport with a National Quality Improvement Prototype Award for demonstrating Outstanding Achievement in Quality Improvement. Later in the decade, NUWC Keyport garnered several Hammer Awards for innovation and cost-saving initiatives. In 2000, NUWC Keyport received the Washington Governor’s Award for Leadership. The Naval Undersea Museum is one of 14 official U.S. Navy museums. Its mission is to collect, preserve and interpret Naval undersea history, science and operations “for the benefit of the U.S. Navy and the people of the United States.” The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; admission and parking are free. Visitors can view a simulation of the control room of the nuclear fast-attack submarine Greenling (SSN 614), including equipment such as periscopes, ship control panel, and ballast control panel. Significant artifacts on display include
major U.S. torpedoes, a Confederate mine from the Civil War, and torpedo tubes from the ballistic missile submarine USS Tecumseh (SSBN 628). The exhibits offer numerous audio, video and hands-on activities to enhance the visitor’s enjoyment and understanding. The museum also hosts concerts and ocean-education activities. Keyport celebrates its role as “Torpedo Town USA” each year with a community festival. The entertainment lineup has included the award-winning North Kitsap High School marching band, as well as bluegrass and jazz bands from the region. The Keyport Community Club hosts a festive, memorable Fourth of July parade every year. During the winter holiday season, the club hosts a Christmas progressive dinner. The community features dining
experiences that range from exotic to homestyle. Island Jamz, whose owners hail from Trinidad, offers Caribbean steel drum music and equally authentic Caribbean cuisine, such as crab cakes, jerk chicken, and curried goat. Keyport Mercantile & Sandwich Shoppe sells freshly made sandwiches in a setting that will bring visitors back to the early 1900s, when the store was first established as a grocery. The store, surrounded by the town’s Central Park, offers locally grown produce as well. The Whiskey Creek Steak House was originally Keyport’s first mercantile, established in 1927. Known by the area’s First Peoples as Hahdskus, a treaty was signed here on Jan. 26, 1855 by representatives of the United States and Chimakum, S’Klallam and Skokomish leaders, clearing the way for non-Native settlement in this region. Point No Point Light, built in 1878, is a major attraction for residents and visitors, with a long stretch of driftwood beach and a marsh that attracts migratory birds. Beachcombing, dog walking, fishing and kite flying are popular activities at the beach. Visitors to the area often stop at the nearby Hansville Store for coffee, ice cream, sandwiches, soda or a great bottle of wine. Cup of Joy is the newest café and coffee house on the local scene. Indianola Indianola, nestled amid forest and beaches, is a slice of small-town America. Visitors can get a taste of that life during Indianola Days in August, on whichever weekend coincides with the lowest minus-tide. It’s a good time to enjoy the beach, which is normally open only to members of the Indianola Beach Improvement Club. The Indianola Country Store and Deli is the only store in town. Outside, a community bulletin board keeps residents informed of local goingson. Inside, visitors can fill up on sandwiches and other deli fare. Views of the distant Seattle skyline, Mount Rainier and the Olympics remind Indianola residents why theirs is a charmed existence. Kingston Kingston has built on its position as a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula. This year, the Port of Kingston launched the SoundRunner passenger ferry, with regularly scheduled service between Kingston and Seattle’s Pier 50. Downtown Kingston is artsy and eclectic, with book stores, galleries, restaurants and a theater. The Firehouse Theater is one of the few independently owned theaters in Kitsap County. Mike Wallace Memorial Park at the Port of Kingston Marina is the site of Kingston’s biggest community celebration — the Fourth of July concerts and fireworks. Live music is performed in the park’s pavilion. Kingston Farmers Market takes place here weekly April through October. North Beach is a popular place to walk dogs. Village Green Community Park on West Kingston Road has a large lawn and a play structure for children. Arness Park on South Kingston Road has views of Apple Tree Cove and the ferries. Port Gamble Port Gamble, founded in 1853, has increasingly become a destination for Kitsap residents and visitors alike. Located at the northern end of Kitsap County near Hood Canal, the town continues to build upon its modern history, which began with San Francisco lumbermen Andrew Pope and William Talbot’s opening of a sawmill here in 1853. Around the sawmill a company town developed, with homes that resembled Pope and Talbot’s hometown of East Machias, Maine. Their workforce included men from East Machias, as well as S’Klallam men whose families relocated across the bay to Point Julia after the mill was developed. ➣
Discover Kitsap Once the bulwark of the local economy, the sawmill closed in 1995, ushering in a new era for Port Gamble as a visitor destination. Today, visitors can stroll streets of green lawns, white picket fences and 1800s homes, many of them now serving as antique stores, boutiques and shops. Suquamish The Suquamish Tribe is a major economic force in Kitsap County. Its businesses include Suquamish Clear water Casino Resort, next to the Agate Pass bridge; and White Horse Golf Course, which many golfers call one of the most challenging and fun courses they’ve played. Suquamish also maintains cultural and historical sites that tell of the area’s indigenous history. The House of Awakened Culture, overlooking Agate Pass in Suquamish Village, is a gathering hall with architecture reminiscent of Old Man House, believed to have been the largest longhouse in what is now Washington state. Old Man House was the home of Sealth and Kitsap, two Suquamish leaders of the mid-1800s who signed the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. Chief Sealth or Seattle’s gravesite is nearby and is a historic site. The Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort Hotel features older and contemporary art. Two traditional welcome figures stand at the entrance of the hotel. Hanging above the lobby is a canoe carved by Ed Carrier. Outside, overlooking the pass, is a large story pole. The Suquamish Museum, 15838 Sandy Hook Road, has exhibits consisting of artifacts, oral history, photography, and audio/visual productions. About 8,000 people visit the 6,500-square-foot museum each year. The Suquamish Farmers Market — Wednesdays, 3-7 p.m., April through October — is located on Suquamish Way, across from Village Shell gas station. Vendors include local artisans, farms, and Native and non-Native artists. This year, Suquamish will host its visitors around July 21-22.

ressed in the bright blue of its Norwegian heritage, Poulsbo beckons visitors today much the same way it drew its founding fathers more than a century ago. Bannered sidewalks curve between cafes and art galleries in the heart of downtown, nestled against peaceful Liberty Bay near the snow-capped Olympic Mountains. Called Little Norway for its likeness to the fjords of Scandinavia, Poulsbo continues to pay homage to the Nordic culture, from its newly opened historical museum featuring the fishing trade on which the town was founded to annual festivities that draw the community together in ethnic food and celebration. May’s annual Viking Fest signals the start of summer, bearing all the marks of a warm-weather affair, including a lutefisk eating competition and a colorful carnival on Front Street. In June, Midsummer Fest celebrates the Summer Solstice in traditional Norwegian style. Vikings roam the streets and potato sack races and a fish toss provide entertainment for onlookers. ➣

Discover Kitsap Poulsbo celebrates Independence Day a day early. Fireworks fly over Liberty Bay on July 3, as the community gathers to watch. In August, the City of Poulsbo shuts out vehicular traffic for an old-fashioned dance in city streets. With the fall season comes a celebration of lutefisk, as First Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway each hold annual dinners, drawing hungry crowds from all over the region to a meal of cod, meatballs, potatoes and lefse. Each plate is prepared by volunteers. The Classic Yacht Association holds an annual rendezvous of historic wooden boats each fall at the Port of Poulsbo, which is situated next to Waterfront Park, a lolling green lawn along Poulsbo’s downtown shoreline. Julefest is held each December. Vikings escort the Lucia bride, known historically for her charity, from a torchlit canoe on Liberty Bay to a bonfire in Waterfront Park. Her appearance is followed by Santa’s, who traditionally arrives in nearby Anderson Parkway on a fire truck as red as his coat. Throughout downtown, historic homes fall along walking paths designated by the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce, including the Moe House, which was built in 1901 and served as a home for Ivar B. Moe, the man responsible for giving the city its name. Take a walking tour through nearby neighborhoods to see the Significant Trees of Poulsbo, designated by the city for their uniqueness and size. While citizens continue to celebrate the town’s history, a new city hall, opened in 2010, marks the Poulsbo skyline as a symbol of the future. In it, the Poulsbo Historical Society operates the historical museum, where residents can research family history and visitors can explore items from the town’s founding families. The historical society also runs Martinson Cabin, a Lindvig Way attraction full of relics and artifacts from the area’s earliest pioneers, as well as hands-on learning opportunities for history buffs of all ages. With 9,200 residents, Poulsbo is expected to hold nearly 15,000 people by the year 2025. The College Marketplace of-
fers a host of consumer favorites to meet the growing demand, including Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Office Max. The Poulsbo Village is a favorite local one-stop-shop, with its grocers, restaurants and boutique shops. Near it sits Centennial Park, established by the city in 2008 in celebration of 100 years of government. Poulsbo’s Fish Park on Lindvig Way is a community-nurtured open space, cultivated by local boy and girl scouts,
churches, philanthropic groups and volunteers who have planted trees, built trails and placed benches and boardwalks there. Soon, a trail will connect it to American Legion Park, which sits along the west side of Liberty Bay, and is connected to downtown by a volunteer-built boardwalk. Near the North Kitsap School District headquarters on Caldart Road is Frank Raab Park, complete with a community garden and a fenced dog park for offleash canines.

he West Sound long has been a destination for golfer throughout the Northwest. But this summer, it will be a global attraction. Gold Mountain Golf Complex will host this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur from July 18-23. It is the second national championship held on the city of Bremerton-owned complex’s Olympic Course, which hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship in 2006. “It’s really the biggest event we’ve ever had,” Gold Mountain director of golf Scott Alexander said. “This really is the preeminent junior tournament in the world. It will be the best players in the world that are not 18 by the final match.” He credits the United States Golf Association’s decision to return to the Kitsap Peninsula to the community. Discover Kitsap Magazine rated it as the best public course in the state from 2005-06 — he said USGA officials were impressed that 400 volunteers helped support the ’06 tournament. “It’s very seldom they will go to the same site twice,” Alexander said. “It’s a big pat on the back for our whole community pulling together.” One aspect that differentiates Gold Mountain from many places is that it offers two separate courses. Both the Cascade and Olympic courses are 18 holes. The older Cascade course is $28 from Monday through Thursday — Olympic is $10 more — and rates increase by $2 and $3, respectively, for both on Friday. Weekend rates are $35 for Cascade and $49 for Olympic. There are specials for juniors and senior citizens. All rates apply only to April. And there also are annual passes, including some that allow choose whichever course they want to golf on a particular day. Gold Mountain also offers a junior
golf camp, which Alexander said will be different this year because of the U.S. Junior Amateur. He said the new schedule has it running two nights per week for most of the summer. Port Orchard’s McCormick Woods Golf Course, which opened in 1987, celebrates its 25th season in operation this year. Owner and general manager Shawn Cucciardi’s 18-hole course has nearby housing developments, but it is one of the area’s most decorated after being honored at the state level and nationally by Golf Digest several times. McCormick Woods continues to host a number of tournaments during the summer, including the 18thannual Detlef Schrempf Celebrity Golf Classic, which is slated for June 27. Rates are $39 on Monday through Thursday and increase by $10 on Friday through Sunday. Senior citizens pay $35 on Monday through Friday, while students who are 23 years old and younger and ➣

Cucciardi’s course also features lessons for junior golfers that run from April through September. Its restaurant, The Clubhouse at McCormick Woods, was named as the best golf course restaurant in 2003 by Golf Northwest Magazine. When the weather has not been problematic, Cucciardi said business has been steady. “The days where the weather has cooperated, we’ve been very busy,” he said. “It seems like we’re finally turning out of that recession.” But both McCormick Woods and another Port Orchard golf course, Trophy Lake & Casting, and Gold Mountain have maintained the Kitsap Golf Group partnership. The package allows a golfer to play one round at each course during three days and includes hotel reservations for two nights at the Silverdale Beach Hotel for $349. “It just shows this is a very viable
golf destination,” said Cucciardi, adding that it is a popular deal with tourists from British Columbia. Trophy Lake Golf & Casting has been ranked among “America’s Best Courses You Can Play” by Golf Week and was also voted “Best Public Golf Course” by Seattle Magazine Reader’s Choice 2009. The course offers a true resort feel as rows of pine trees line the fairways instead of housing communities and the clubhouse is reminiscent of an old fishing lodge. To complete the experience, trout are stocked seasonally on two lakes which are embedded within the golf course with fly fishing rods available for rental. The course was designed by award-winning architect John Fought in 1999 and offers five sets of tees to accommodate players of all levels. The practice facility offers 40,000 square feet of natural turf, a chipping area and sand bunker for practice or warm up before your round. “We try and create an experience when guests visit Trophy Lake Golf
& Casting. It’s truly exciting to hear a guest get their first birdie on the golf course and catch their first trout after their round,” says Lance Fong , General Manager. Tedd Hudanich, who has been the head golf professional at Bremerton’s Rolling Hills Golf Course for most of existence, preaches value when marketing the 18-hole course. Unlike many courses, Rolling Hills’ rates do not change throughout the year except for a decrease during the winter. Nine holes runs $18 and 18 is $28 during weekdays. For active military, people 17 years old and younger and those at least 62 years old, the rate for 18 holes is $20. That also is the standard price after 2 p.m. Unlike some area golf courses, Hudanich said he does not have to contend as much with increasing gas prices. “We have a very considerable population in a seven-mile radius,” he said. “We have potentially a shorter distance to drive and a less expensive price to pay. That could play into our hands as positives.” ➣

That kind of was the onus of us pursuing the softening of the golf course. The bunkers and trees we took out didn’t impact the high-level golfers. It’s the average golfer that gets penalized by conditions that severe.” He said that does not mean the course’s conditions will adjust from difficult to easy. “It’s still going to be a tough golf course,” he said. Christy also is eyeing the construction of a clubhouse. He expects construction on that to begin next spring and it to be completed the following winter. One change that occurred last year included decreased rates. Even though White Horse did not offer amenities such as a clubhouse or restaurant, it still was priced higher than Gold Mountain, McCormick Woods or Trophy Lake. That no longer is the case. Through April, weekday rates for nine holes were $20 with a $2 discount for those with a player’s card. It was $25 with a $5 discount for those with a player’s card to play 18 holes. Weekend rates were increased by $8 each for 18 holes, while the weekend price for nine holes was the same as during the rest of the week. There also are discounts for activeduty military, juniors and senior citizens. “We decided not to raise rates,” Christy said. “We thought it would be more prudent to improve the product and keep the rates the same.”

Port of Kingston Harbormaster Kevin Van Vliet said Passport to Puget Sound was building buzz among visitors last summer. “They’d bring in their passport and say it’s a great program,” Van Vliet said. “It was starting to spread a lot.” Boaters can collect two stamps in a hurry in South Kitsap. The Bremerton and Port Orchard marinas, both operated by the Port of Bremerton, are nestled on opposite sides of Sinclair Inlet. On the south side, the Port Orchard Marina is a great option for tying up and sampling downtown life. To the north, the Bremerton Marina is a gateway to the city’s rejuvenated waterfront district. It has 80 to 100 visitor slips and is located close to the state ferry terminal for easy Seattle access. Several restaurants, gift and antique shops are an easy walk from the marina and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard isn’t far off, either. A Kitsap Transit foot ferry makes regular trips across the inlet, connecting the two waterfronts.
Farther north, Central Kitsap features three spots to launch boats into Puget Sound: Chico, Silverdale and Tracyton. Traditional tie ups can be found in Brownsville. There are a few freshwater boating options, as well. The Chico, Silverdale and Tracyton launches are located in Dyes Inlet, a focal point for water-oriented events in Kitsap. Silverdale is home to the only floating pier on the inlet and hosts Whaling Days, a maritime-themed festival held in July. Nearby attractions include Silverdale Waterfront Park and Old Town Silverdale, a hot spot for dining and window shopping. The Port of Brownsville sits on Port Orchard Bay, tucked away from surrounding marinas, and it likes it that way. Brownsville offers two boat ramps as well, along with a deli, laundry and other amenities. Kitsap Lake and Wildcat Lake are popular among boaters and anglers as an alternative to the Sound, but Wildcat has a “no-wake” rule, effectively eliminating high-speed

boating activities. At the North End of the peninsula, Poulsbo and Kingston have expansive marinas set amid spectacular scenery. The Port of Poulsbo has 130 guest moorage slips in fjord-like Liberty Bay. A multipurpose room for group outings, a fuel dock are also available and the yacht club is an easy row away. The Port of Kingston, billed as the “Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula,” is swiftly becoming one of the Sound’s most popular marinas. It has 49 guest slips sheltered behind a breakwater. A sandy beach on the far side of the Washington State Ferries terminal is a popular place for strolls and dog walks, and four new guest mooring buoys are available offshore. The question is, where to begin? Silverdale is in the heart of Central Kitsap and although not a city — it’s unincorporated — has an abundance of things to do. Old Town Silverdale, which was established in 1889, now includes bakeries, specialty and gift stores, salons, small eateries and of course, the Silverdale Waterfront Park. The park has ample parking spaces and a boat launch for those who want to test out the Dyes Inlet waters. There is a play area for the kids and the park makes for a great place for picnics on a sunny day. ➣

For shopping, hit up Kitsap Mall at 10315 Silverdale Way NW. With more than 100 stores and food joints, there’s something for everyone. Next to the food court there is a children’s play area and there are always seasonal events happening. During the holiday season, there is the indoor snowfall and in spring the Easter bunny comes to visit. As far as satisfying the taste buds, there are options for all eaters. Silverdale boasts Silver City Restaurant and Brewery, located at 2799 NW Myhre Road, that brews and serves up different beers from scotch ales to a Bavarian Hefeweizen and has a complete dinner menu including sandwiches and pizzas. Hale’s Alehouse, located in Kitsap Mall, is also a good place to gather with friends to drink, eat and be merry. Other eateries in Silverdale include Red Robin for gourmet burgers and many fast food regulars, as well as Japanese, Thai and Mexican restaurants. After shopping and eating to the heart’s content, there is still much
to see and do in Silverdale. Clear Creek Trail is a good place to begin. The trail extends a little more than five miles through Silverdale and is an asset to the community because it has been created by the community. Many kids and volunteer groups have helped with building the trail and maintaining it, said Tex Lewis, a member of the Clear Creek Task Force. And not only has the trail been a community effort, it provides visitors with a little bit of ever ything. While walking along the trail, one may even happen upon a beaver or otter in the creek. For the bird watchers, be prepared to spot and identify an array of birds. And don’t worr y, for those who cannot classify the winged creatures from a quick glance, there are signs throughout the trail that provide information on some of the species. In addition, Clear Creek Trail is the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everything else. ➣

Discover Kitsap “It’s a wonderful way for people to explore nature in an urban setting,” Lewis said. The Central Kitsap Community Campus is underway to be located west of the mall. It will feature green spaces, the Haselwood Family YMCA and other facets for a growing population. The 85,000-square-foot YMCA includes a pool, gymnasium, aerobic areas and youth center among other services and is scheduled to open in July. And, it will provide a place for residents and visitors to do a lot more than just get some cardiovascular exercise. “We want people to go beyond meeting their fitness goals,” said Geoff Ball, executive director of the Haselwood Family YMCA, adding that the facility will be a place where friends can meet and for groups to gather. When the time comes to explore beyond Silverdale, Brownsville is nearby to the east. Although primarily a residential area, Brownsville is nestled along the Burke Bay and makes for a nice visit.
The Port of Brownsville Marina offers the amenities of a large marina, but without the crowds. There is ample moorage, restrooms, showers and a laundromat. The fuel dock has gasoline, diesel, lubricants and propane. There is also a sanitary pump-out station available for free. The Brownsville Marine and Deli ser ves food, beer and good company. The nearby Brownsville Yacht Club was established in 1971. Aside from the ongoing attractions that Brownsville offers, once a year the entire area comes together for Brownsville Appreciation Day. It is always scheduled for the fourth Saturday every September to celebrate the community. All are welcome to enjoy a day of fun including live music, boat rides and tours, face painting, and hot dogs. This year’s event will be Sept. 24 and is in its seventh anniversary. On the opposite side of Central Kitsap from Brownsville is Seabeck. Formerly a mill town, Seabeck gives
people an even closer gaze at the Olympic Mountains and is along the Hood Canal. Scenic Beach State Park is a 20-minute drive from Silverdale and is an 88-acre camping park with 1,500 feet of saltwater beachfront. Wild rhododendrons are in bloom during spring and oysters can be harvested in season at the rocky beach. The Seabeck Conference Center along Seabeck Highway is a nonprofit organization that offers space for groups to rent including for retreats and meetings. Across from the conference center there is a quaint row of stores and food services. Seabeck Pizza, a local family-owned business founded in 1989, is home to the deep dish pizza. The business now has a total of six locations in Kitsap including one in Silverdale and Chico. In addition to on- and off-road riding for the whole day or just an afternoon, Kitsap County offers riders from the Seattle area excellent training routes that will keep you sharp and interested, filled with challenging climbs, thrilling descents and spectacular vistas. ➣

It also lets riders plan out centuries and half-centuries without having to ride the same route home. For every level and interest, Kitsap is a bicycle rider’s paradise. For mountain bikers, every part of the county offers up earth for knobby tires, but perhaps the most notable is the trails of those on forest land north of Poulsbo, known to locals as Stottlemeyer and Port Gamble, but technically the land is owned by Pope Resources. Stretching for miles, it is recommenced to either go with somebody who knows, or pack a lunch and a compass and prepare to get lost. Also notable elsewhere in Kitsap are the trails at Green Mountain and Banner Forest. Often overlooked, however, are the road rides Kitsap offers. And for those who have conquered the hills of their neighborhoods "across the water," Kitsap is an untapped cycling paradise. One of the unique features of bicycling in Kitsap is the Washington State Ferries, linking two docks in Seattle — downtown and Fauntleroy — to three docks in Kitsap, Bainbridge Island, Bremerton and Southworth. Additionally, the Edmonds ferry offloads in Kingston, just one or two Shot Bloks from the Hood Canal Bridge. With a map and a ferry schedule, a cyclist of any interest or ability can plot a fun and visually stunning course. Additionally there is Kitsap Transit’s foot ferry across Sinclair Inlet, linking the downtowns of Port Orchard and Bremerton.

The West Sound Cycle Club, Kitsap’s advocate for cyclists, is working with Kitsap County to publish a comprehensive bicycle map, laying out the safest and easiest routes for getting around by pedal power. And although Kitsap County paves road shoulders whenever it gets the chance, leading to a fair number of wide routes spanning for miles, some roads are less developed and require more concentration and caution. Because much of the county is rural in nature, street lights, wide shoulders and sidewalks are scarce in some places. Helmets are required, and reflectors and lights at night. And as always, wear bright colors, obey the rules of the road, use hand signals and ride defensively.

One of the most interesting routes starts in West Seattle, skirts Yukon Harbor to Port Orchard. Hop aboard the foot ferry and you are in downtown Bremerton, just feet from the ferry back to downtown Seattle. In addition to the ferries, another unique aspect of cycling in Kitsap County are the hills. Fixie and single speed riders must have legs like steel springs, or they will shortly. Although the beginner or commuter can find relatively breezy routes, tackling the hills of Kitsap County as part of a training regimen will put a person at the head of weekend rides and tours. In fact, the annual Chilly Hilly takes place on Bainbridge Island in February and lives up to its name.

Discover Kitsap be complete this summer, with a grand opening late July to early August. While pedestrian paths and the newly-landscaped beach area on the Port Washington Narrows are open to the public, the ball fields and a new playground will open this summer. Long-standing traditions in Bremerton include the Armed Forces Festival and parade, taking place May 21 this year in downtown Bremerton. The event is the country’s largest and longest-running Armed Forces Day Parade. Post-parade festivities include an arts and crafts fair and a car show. Memorial Day weekend brings the Kitsap Harbor Festival, which features tall ships, farmers markets, a classic car show, beer gardens, live music and a sailing regatta on the Louis Mentor boardwalk downtown. The Blackberry Festival is on Labor Day weekend, which includes the Blackberry Criterium Bike Race, Berry Fun Run and a variety of blackberry-inspired foods and drinks. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with a Saturday downtown parade in which all members of the public can participate, followed by music, corned beef and cabbage. Much of Bremerton’s landmarks, unique businesses and events center around its downtown core, just steps off the Seattle-Bremerton ferry. There, you’ll find the Harborside Fountain Park, one of the city’s most popular attractions, complete with a series of fountains, sculptures, waterfront views and tables and benches to accommodate a picnic. The Fountain Park leads the way to the Puget Sound Navy Museum, where you can explore exhibits about the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the ships ported in Bremerton through history, a gift shop, research library and children’s area, all at the historic Building 50, recently renovated. Also on the waterfront is the Louis Mentor Boardwalk, which runs along the shoreline with a wide concourse, park benches, fountains, a spectacular view of the Cascade Mountains on a clear day and a path to the USS Turner Joy. The Turner Joy is a historic Vietnam War-era Navy destroyer, now operated by the Bremerton Historic Ships Association. It is moored at the Page 74
north end of the boardwalk and open to public tours and events. Best known for its participation in the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, public tours explore the entire ship, from the crew quarters to the gun towers. Several locally-owned restaurants and coffee shops are scattered throughout the Harborside area, such as Fritz European Fry House, which specializes in Belgian-style fries and Belgian ales; Fraiche Cup, with coffee, pastries and gifts; and Boston’s Deli and Pizza. Just a block or two inland, there are several local shops, sculptures and galleries to enjoy downtown, home to Bremerton’s arts district. Centered around Fourth Street and Pacific Avenue, the arts district includes the Evergreen Children’s Theater and Aurora Valentinetti Puppet Museum, Collective Visions Gallery, the Kitsap Historical Society Museum, the Amy Burnett Gallery, Simply Renewed antiques and vintage clothing shop Ish. Further north on Pacific Avenue is Fingers Duke, a screen printing shop and gallery that features the artwork of young local artists. The downtown arts district hosts a First Friday Art Walk on the first Friday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. The Admiral Theatre on Pacific Avenue, opened in 1942 and reopened after a renovation in 1997, hosts regular weekend events, including film series, concerts, comedy shows and family events. Shows in 2011 include Frankie Avalon, The Best of Seattle Comedy and The Alley Cats. A few blocks north of the downtown area is Evergreen Rotary Park, a waterfront space for walking, picnicking and playing. The 10-acre park includes almost 2,000 feet of shoreline and features a large playground, barbecues and boat launches. This summer, the park will host weekly farmers markets. West of downtown is the Charleston district, centered around Callow Avenue south of Sixth Street. Charleston was once its own town until it was annexed by Bremerton in the early 20th century, and consequently brings its own unique identity.
Charleston is home to live music venues known for their rock, punk and jazz shows, such as The Charleston and Hi-Fidelity Lounge. Ben Gibbard, lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie, and members of punk band MxPx are originally from Bremerton. The Charleston district also hosts its own monthly Art Walk from noon to 8 p.m. on the last Saturday of each month. Shops and galleries there include Artists for Freedom and Unity, Echo Artworks bead gallery and Claywerks Ceramics and Pottery. On the west side of the State Route 3 is Kitsap Lake, with a four-acre park containing picnic tables, a fishing pier and a boat launch and float. Fishers can catch largemouth bass, and rainbow and cutthroat trout, and there are 30 acres of wetlands. Make sure to cross the Manette Bridge into the Manette district of Bremerton. Like Charleston, Manette was a separate town until the early 20th century. Manette also hosts a First Friday Art Walk and offers a variety of eats, including the local favorite Kate’s Jersey Subs, The Boat Shed waterfront restaurant, Italian restaurant La Fermata and Der Blokken Brewery, which serves homemade brews. The Manette Saloon, a Bremerton destination for nightlife, is a local hotspot for live music, weekly open mic nights and pub-style fare. For a scenic waterfront drive, head northbound on nearby Lebo Boulevard, which turns into Tracyton Beach Road. Along that route, you’ll pass Lent Landing, 1.5 acres of open grass and a gazebo overlooking the Port Washington Narrows, and the Pat Carey Vista, another landscaped waterfront spot to enjoy views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains from the picnic tables and benches. Bremerton is also home to a vibrant performing arts community, which includes the Bremerton Symphony, Bremerton Community Theatre, Kitsap Peninsula Opera and Peninsula Dance Theatre. This year, the Bremerton Community Theatre will present “Sleeping Beauty,” “Laughter on the 23rd Floor“ and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

T
he ghosts of South Kitsap’s early settlers, pioneers and explorers still haunt the community. Or, at least, memorials to the things they did while they were alive do. Take the city of Port Orchard’s name, for example. It wasn’t named after fruit trees. It carries the name of Harry Masterman Orchard, who discovered the strait separating Bainbridge Island from the Kitsap Peninsula in 1792 while working as a clerk on an English charting ship. The ship’s captain, George Vancouver, named the body of water “Port Orchard Strait” to honor his clerk, but the city didn’t cary the name until about 100 years after the discovery. And the name change was controversial. Originally, the town was named “Sidney,” ➣

Port Orchard is home to miles of spectacular shoreline and breathtaking vistas. The city is nestled along the shores of Sinclair Inlet, framed by the Olympic Mountains to the west and Cascades to the east. Downtown is relatively small and features turn of the century storefronts lined up along the “main drag” called Bay Street. Guests can enjoy leisurely walks along the town boardwalk, board a tour boat to world famous Blake Island, or jump onboard the historic MV Carlisle II foot ferry to Bremerton. While Port Orchard is not a resort, the town nonetheless became a tourist destination when local author Debbie Macomber began writing books about the city in her New York Times best-selling Cedar Cove series. Hundreds of people arrive annually to take in the sights that she writes about. It is clear the citizens love their events, from the Kitsap Harbor Festival Memorial Day Weekend, to the long running Fathom’s of Fun Parade and Festival during the 4th of July. Thousands attend our very popular car shows, Mustangs on Bay Street in late July, and then The Cruz that takes place the second Sunday in August. And then finally, the first Saturday in December, Kitsap County’s premier holiday event, the family free Festival of Chimes and Lights, a delight for the entire family. Throughout the summer we have Concerts on the Bay at waterfront park, and an Artwalk on Friday nights. And don’t be surprised to see Pirates walking the streets, Tall Ships lining the harbor, and numerous other fun-filled events and activities. The town knows how to throw a party, and you’re invited.

Discover Kitsap after Sidney M. Stevens, an investor from Dekalb, Ill., who bought 88.5 acres on Oct. 10, 1885, intending to build a town there. Sidney Stevens’ son, Frederick Stevens, had the town platted and incorporated by Sept. 15, 1890, and he named the town “Sidney,” after his father. Two years later, however, locals asked the state Legislature and the Post Office Department to change the city’s name to “Port Orchard.” At first, the Post Office agreed to do so, but the state’s Legislature didn’t. Eventually, though, Will Thompson, editor of the Sidney Independent, persuaded the legislators to make the name change official. Around that time, towns cropped up along the Sound, many of which exist today, including Retsil, Annapolis, Manette, Southworth, Manchester and Olalla. Each town hugs the waterfront, because local leaders didn’t connect the towns with roads for several hundred years.
Locals used row boats to get from town-to-town until 1888, when the first steamers came to the area, and small boats swarmed South Kitsap’s waters then in such great numbers that they earned the nickname “Mosquito Fleet.” One of the Mosquito Fleet’s original steamers, the Carlisle II, still runs from downtown Port Orchard, near the library, to the Bremerton ferry terminal. It’s a popular form of transportation for commuters and tourists alike. So far, South Kitsap has evolved in a slow, ponderous manner. But plans have been set in motion to change the area quickly and drastically in the near future. The sleepy town of Port Orchard, for example, is slated to become the largest city in Kitsap County within the next few years. It has already started gobbling up the land and population around it. Last year, town’s population grew from 8,500 to around 10,000 by annexing the McCormick Woods, a 2,400-acre housing community, into the city.
And that’s just the beginning. The city’s leaders plan to eventually grow the town to include 30,000 people and 7,200 acres. To accommodate the such massive, rapid growth, the city council is looking at changing the governmental structure. For example, the town’s looking to get a non-elected professional mayor to oversee the government. Will Port Orchard maintain its small-town “feel” going forward? Only time will tell.

Sidney Museum, Gallery celebrate SK’s heritage The Sidney Museum and Gallery building at 202 Sidney Avenue is the first site in Port Orchard to receive national and state historic recognition. The building, constructed in 1908, was the site of the first Masonic Hall in Port Orchard. In 1972, the Sidney Museum and Arts Association purchased the building. It currently operates as a non-profit with an art gallery on the first floor and museum on the second floor. A monthly show features different regional artists. This May will host the 41st Helen Norris juried open art show. Other highlighted shows during the year include a student art show for local high school and junior high school students and a quilt and needle arts show. The
museum on the second floor feature vignettes of early Port Orchard life. The Log Cabin Museum, 416 Sidney, is open on weekends during the summer months beginning in May. It houses the Orchard family, a group of mannequins portraying changing scenes of early Kitsap County. The Log Cabin was built in 1914 by Alan Bartow, a civil war veteran, newspaperman and retired Indian agent for the Suquamish reservation, who built the cabin for his wife Louise. The cabin is located on its original site. The Log Cabin is open for do-ityourself pictures with Santa the first two weekends in December. Admissions to both sites is free.

Of the 19 Puget Sound communities with WSF terminals, the Bainbridge and Kingston routes ranked first and second, respectively, totaling more than 10 million riders last year. The majority of the riders are commuters, most of whom live quiet lives in the pleasant environs of rural Kitsap County and then travel daily to where the jobs are in the Seattle area. But if commuters – whether they gain ferry access by foot, bicycle or vehicle – are the meat and potatoes of the WSF system, the gravy is represented by visitors who use the boats to travel westbound to the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas and beyond. To ensure users are well informed whether they are commuting or just visiting the Puget Sound, the ferry system has created an informative website (www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/) to keep people up to date in real
time on what’s happening at each of its runs and terminals. It’s “visitor’s center“ is especially useful and links to others such as the Kitsap Peninsula website (www.visitkitsap.com/), which offers detailed information for each of the peninsula’s communities. With millions of people riding the ferries annually, WSF has become aggressive during the last few years in advertising via video screens on its largest vessels and busiest terminals. The pilot program was initiated on the Seattle-Bainbridge Island run and has proven so successful that it may expand to other runs in coming months. In an effort to add revenue, the financially strapped WSF contracted with Seattle-based Trans4Media (T4M) on an advertising campaign last year. One of the most successful screen video campaigns was for Hawaii tourism, but most of focus during the last six months has been on advertising community businesses and tourism on Bainbridge. In connection with the island’s Chamber of Commerce, businesses signed a six-month contract to put their messages on the 15 screens (boats and terminals) for $250 a
month. The screens belong to WSF and T4M sells the space. “We started with just four advertisers and now have 50,” said T4M’s Jayne Russell. “The advertisements have been popular and the response has been great. We have signed up many of the initial advertisers for another six months. They are mostly for businesses, but we’ve also had some tourism messages for Bloedel Reserve and IslandWood. This has been done on a trial basis, but we’re willing if WSF wants to expand them to other runs and terminals.” Andrea Mackin, the Bainbridge Chamber’s marketing director, said the terminal screens have been especially effective “because it’s really a captive audience with people waiting to board. Once they see the screens, which offer intermittent messages that rotate, they seem to retain the message. “Our messages our primarily for our benefit,” she said, “but there’s no reason it can’t work for other ferry runs serving the peninsula. We like to think we’re the gateway, but all of the communities have the opportunity to pull them people further west.”

espite Kitsap County’s small town feel, the area is still home to various sports attractions for families, casual and diehard fans alike. Kitsap hosts a professional soccer team with outdoor and indoor seasons, along with a summer collegiate baseball franchise, hockey, rodeo and a slew of intercollegiate sports from Bremerton’s Olympic College. The Kitsap Pumas, based in Bremerton, compete in the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League and earned a division title in its first year in 2009. The Pumas draw crowds at their home games hosted at Memorial Stadium in Bremerton. Kitsap’s indoor soccer season runs from November through February, while the outdoor squad plays from May to July. The Pumas are the only pro soccer team to play in Kitsap, providing the community with ➣

In addition, the franchise announced last winter that they will host the Port Vale Football Club from England in an international friendly match on July 19 in Bremerton. Meanwhile, the Kitsap BlueJackets baseball team competes at Gene Lobe Fields at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton every summer. The franchise is a collegiate squad that plays in the West Coast League. Matt Acker of Green River Community College (Auburn) coaches the BlueJackets, who went 24-23 last season. Kitsap opens the season June 4 against the Wenatchee AppleSox on the road. The county is also home to thrilling rodeo action each summer. Kitsap hosts two rodeos for those interested in the cowboy pastime. In June, the Thunderbird Pro Benefit Rodeo takes place, with benefits from the event going to the Northwest Burn Foundation and Corey’s Day on the Farm. The two-day event is hosted at Thunderbird Stadium at the Kitsap Fairgrounds. The second rodeo is the Kitsap County Stampede, which takes place every August and includes top-notch talent. The Stampede is a five-day event with a history dating back more than 60 years. The Xtreme Bulls competition concludes the rodeo, which is televised on ESPN. The Stampede is part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Olympic College, which has a main campus in Bremerton and another location in Poulsbo, features a variety of collegiate sports for Kitsap. The Rangers play in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, which is the largest conference in the country. The school provides 13 individual teams, which include basketball, softball, baseball, golf and soccer. Olympic College also brought back its cross country and track squads
this past year for both male and female student-athletes. The Rangers’ home games are hosted in Bremerton. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.olympic.edu. The county doesn’t shy away from the rink. The Puget Sound Tomahawks junior hockey team starts its season every October with a 48-game schedule. For visitors, Jerisich Park, combined with the adjacent Skansie Brothers Park, is a large, open, waterfront space with grass, decks, benches, and a covered Pavilion for community events. It is also home to the Fisherman Memorial. This large bronze statue, which depicts a fisherman hauling in his catch, was commissioned in memory of Gig Harbor’s fishermen, with special gratitude to those who lost their lives at sea. The parks often play host to fairs and events ranging from the annual Holiday tree lighting ceremony and Blessing of the Fleet, to musical concerts and art festivals.

The county seat of Mason County — just over Kitsap County’s southern border — Shelton is the westernmost city on Puget Sound. The narrow waterway of Hammersly Inlet connects the Port of Shelton to Olympia, Tacoma and points beyond. The downtown core features stone and brick architecture from the World War I era, when the town was rebuilt after a large, destructive fire. Shelton’s economy is still centered around lumber and forestry products, though in recent years the economy has seen major diversification. Commercial shellfish harvesting, new retail centers, real estate activity and government jobs have added layers of economic activity to this formerly traditional blue-collar town. Belfair The town of Belfair is a true gateway community, linking visitors to the southeast Olympics and Hood Canal from points further north and east. Located on State Route 3 approximately 10 miles south of Bremerton and 25 miles north of Shelton, Belfair is a popular destination for many boaters, scuba divers, backpackers, ATV riders and campers. Belfair offers a final fueling and supply stop before heading into Olympic National Park and Forest, or the deeply wooded Tahuya State Forest. Through July and August the surface water of Hood Canal warms considerably, and many firsttime visitors are surprised to find themselves enjoying a cool, refreshing salt water dip. Union As State Route 106 follows the southernmost Great Bend hook of Hood Canal, it passes through the town of Union. Union was the site of Washington state’s first arts colony, and today its arts heritage is slowly being reborn through events like the annual Annas Bay Music Festival. Unique gift shops and galleries, a deli and espresso stands, a gorgeous par-72 golf course, plus world-class restaurants and lodging facilities complement this sunny hillside and beachfront community. Hood Canal Adventures at the Union Marina offers a wide variety of boat rentals including kayaks, paddle boats, motor boats, an electric boat, and a pontoon party barge, along with a number of different recreational tours. Port Townsewnd Port Townsend runs down to the water’s edge on the northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula — just across the Hood Canal to the west of Kitsap County — in a show of quaint Victorian homes and Puget Sound spray. With spectacular views of the Olympics to the south and a stretch of the Juan de Fuca straights to the north, Port Townsend seems like the edge of wilderness, despite the close proximity of the San Juan Islands, Whidbey Island and Victoria B.C. Though Port Townsend’s postcard-pretty location might easily keep one preoccupied, the town also has a clutch of cultural attractions to keep visitors otherwise occupied, whether lingering on in an atmospheric bed & breakfast for the weekend or bound on to Olympic National Park.

FATHOMS O’ FUN FESTIVAL is a community service organization, carrying on a tradition which began when Port Orchard was very young. It is operated entirely by community volunteers. It provides a variety of family activities throughout the year including the Grand Parade, Festival activities, scholarship pageant, summer concerts, a craft & vendor show, a street fair, children’s events, and an award winning community festival float which appears in parades throughout the state. The centerpiece of Fathom’s annual programs is its coordination of the 4th of July Sinclair Inlet Fireworks Show.
