Modern Collision has a second life under brothers
W
hen Aaron and Mika Strom officially took over Modern Collision Rebuild last January from parents, Dick and Bobbi Strom, it wasn’t exactly a surprise since the boys had started working at the Miller Road business since they were old enough to turn a wrench. Aaron has spent most of his adult life doing body work, while Mika spent several years working as a auto mechanic elsewhere. But since they were chips off the old block, it was probably only a matter of time before they would send their parents off on a permanent vacation. Five years ago they teamed up and turned the business that their dad had started in 1974 as a body shop into fullservice auto repair, then made it officially the second generation’s business this year. While their parents are camping at Dosewallips State Park or traveling abroad, the brothers have been busy turning the business into the “Best Auto Repair” service on the island. “We’re busy, that’s for sure” Mika said. “The last year and a half our growth has doubled over what it was the previous eight or 10 years. It’s helped that we do both engine and body work now. People who come to us for body repairs often come back when they learn that we also do mechanical work. I guess our reputation for quality and public service is bringing in more people now.” With both Mika and Aaron fathers of three children each, will a third generation take over the business in the future? “My dad didn’t push us but we were around all the time as boys,” Mika said. “We won’t push our kids either. We want them to do whatever they want in life. But you never know.”
