District makes administrative changes BY ADAM RUDNICK arudnick@arlingtontimes.com
ARLINGTON — Teachers and classified staff are not the only Arlington School District employees who will see a change next school year. A number of administrators in the district have changed positions or have new duties, most notably at Arlington High School. The school’s former principal, Kurt Criscione, has accepted a position as the director of elementary support. He was at the high school for the past six years. His successor will be Brian Beckley, who spent the past six years as principal of Post Middle School. “As the new principal at Arlington High School, I am looking forward to meeting you and working together to further
strengthen our school programs,” Beckley wrote on the high school’s website. “Communication is the key to success in a school; it is the foundation of a solid family environment.” Criscione’s new duties include overseeing the district’s Highly Capable and English Language Learners programs, APPLE Preschool, kindergarten through eighth-grade assessment and programs relating to the allocation of Individuals with Disabilities Act and Title 1 funds. District officials are hoping to fill the vacant principal position at Post by Aug. 1. Students at Weston High School will also have a new principal in September. Former Weston principal Maureen Stanton has accepted a position outside of the district after working at the alternative school for the past nine years.
Amie Verellen-Grubbs — former assessment and grant coordinator for the district — will take over at Weston, which enrolled about 140 students last school year. In wake of Trafton School closing its doors in June, Ed Aylesworth will see his administrative duties change during the 2010-11 school year. The previously part-time principal of the school has been reassigned to be the district’s director of food services. Despite the change, he will continue to serve as principal of Stillaguamish Valley School. Aylesworth was principal at Trafton — a school he attended growing up — for the past two years before the Arlington School Board voted in June to close the school. Three assistant principals will also be changing buildings next
school year. Voni Walker, who worked at Post for the past five years, will be moving to Arlington High School in the fall; Faye Britt, previously at the high school, will work at Haller and Alan Boatman will change from Haller to Post. The administrative changes come in wake of six certified staff members who were laid off in May due to budget cuts. To date, three of those individuals have been brought back, Superintendent Kris McDuffy said. Administration is still in discussion with the Public School Employees of Washington union to determine how many classified staff members could received reduction-in-force, or RIF, notices. The Board could approve those RIFs at its Aug. 9 meeting.
