If there was work to be done, and no money to pay for it, chances are Bill Austin had something to do with completing
the project.
Signs painted, restoration of historic buildings, lobbying city officials for a downtown home for City Hall, working seven days a week to reopen a marine science center, Austin, 74, has provided the labor and love that have made Poulsbo the place it is. Now he’s brought a taste of jolly England to Little Norway. Poulsbo’s new English pub, Hare and Hounds, is named after another Hare and Hounds pub, the one in front of Austin’s boyhood home in Cowfold, England. The original was founded in the 17th century. The one built by Austin took about a year of painstaking renovation. It joins the Italian bistros, European bakeries and

Situated along the shores of Liberty Bay, what once was a bustling fishing village is now a downtown bountiful with the charms of old Norwegian culture, along with the flavors of other heritages added by new businesses, homes and residents. A new city hall, melding the feel of old time Scandinavia with current trends, is expected to debut this year in the heart of downtown, at Third Avenue and Moe Street. New Mayor Becky Erickson is leading the way for a city that continues to balance Poulsbo’s beloved historic feel with the growth of its bright future. Along the shore sits Waterfront Park, one of Poulsbo’s many green spaces providing a place of natural respite. A boardwalk starts there and meanders along the bay to American Legion Park. Poulsbo’s Fish Park, on Lindvig Way, has become a bird spotters’ paradise, offering a mile of volunteer-constructed walking trails through preserved land. Waterfront Park also boasts the Kvelstad Pavilion, site of many community events, and is a gateway to the Port of Poulsbo. Expect to see Vikings and Valkyries reveling through Little Norway during the town’s many fun-filled festivities. Viking Fest is a celebration in May that brings together historic culture and modern-day fun. The Third of July and Poulsbo Yacht Rendezvous are beloved summer and fall activities, and Julefest brings the old and young together in song and dance downtown for Christmas holiday revelry. Art galleries, book stores and craft shops join the downtown restaurant line-up, and Front Street itself proves an antiqueseeker’s paradise, with several antique dealers in business. Marina are home to the Poulsbo Yacht Club. The serene and protected waters of Liberty Bay, and the breathtaking mountain views, make it a destination for boaters from all over Puget Sound. The marina has 250 permanent moorage slips and 130 guest slips, as well as a float plane dock. The bay itself proves a place perfect for the active: Kayakers and sailors are common sights among the waters just off Poulsbo’s shore. Kingston has found its niche as a pedestrian-friendly, commuter-welcoming community.

As an unincorporated town with a strong base of commuters, a sense of community hasn’t always come easy in Kingston. But recently residents have found ways to come together around the spaces they share. Whether it’s a park, a farmers market, a library or even a movie theater, a sense of community ownership is growing in the town Kingston. Town pride reached a new level when a high school was finally opened in Kingston in 2007. In a show of support for the Kingston Buccaneers, last fall downtown Kingston shut down for a community-wide homecoming rally. The theme of shared ownership has played Kingston’s parks, too. With the county’s Parks and Recreation department strapped for cash, volunteers have led the way. When the county bought and bulldozed a military housing site off West Kingston Road in 2008, the town was left with a rubble field. With the blessing of the county, volunteers went to work. A field was graded, grass seed spread and trees planted. The park’s opening drew a crowd of several hundred and it has remained popular since. A larger effort, led by the Village Green Foundation, has plans for a multi-generational community center and library on the site. This year, a push is on to create a park district to support the community center with locally levied money. “Instead of just being passive recipients of government services, we’re beginning to realize how much we can get done on our own,” said Bobbie Moore, who’s leading the Village Green effort. “I think it has a lot to do with the high school being here and the success of the park.” Though there is no city government, many residents like Moore and husband Walt Elliott make time to serve on one of the multitude of local committees. The Downtown Kingston Association, Kingston Stakeholders and the Kingston Citizen Advisory Council are just a few
of the groups helping shape the town’s future. Shared goals include creating a more walkable and healthy community, developing parks and trails, and attracting new businesses. The Advisory Council is appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and helps give Kingston residents a voice in county government. The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and a tight-knit business community keep downtown inviting for visi-

tors and local shoppers. The Chamber of Commerce is nestled in its own cottage on State Route 104, up the hill from the ferry terminal, and serves as a visitors center. Kingston is known as a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula, but there are plenty of reasons for tourists to linger. Visitors can sample a nice variety of restaurants, peruse the local arts scene at the Kingston Art Gallery and find easy Wi-Fi service. Golfers can find the White Horse Golf

Wallace park to visit the Kingston Farmers Market, which takes place weekly April through October. A stroll across the ferry lanes north of the port leads walkers to a freshly reconstructed trail to North Beach, a popular dog walking destination. Village Green Community Park on West Kingston Road is a new but already popular spot for picnics and games. The little park packs in a large lawn and a play structure for kids. Nearby Arness Park on South Kingston Road is a hangout in the summer, with views of Apple Tree Cove and ferries. Locals enjoy riding tidewater through a culvert into Arness Slough, but a project is in the works to replace the culvert with a more salmon-friendly bridge. Also linked to the slough is Stillwaters Environmental Education Center, which provides programs on the local habitat, sustainability and watersheds on its expansive campus off Barber Cut Off. The center also hosts its annual ecclectic EcoFest near the same time as Earth Day. A relatively new gem among Kingston parks is Carpenter Lake. A boardwalk trail that starts behind Richard Gordon Elementary School off Barber Cut Off Road leads across a marsh and a series of viewing platforms to the lake. For less serene recreation, kids congregate at the Billie Johnson Skate Park on Lindvog Road. A short drive down Miller Bay Road offers a big reward. Hikers can find six miles of trails in the North Kitsap Heritage Park, completed in 2009, thanks to the work of volunteers. Kingston residents can watch for changes to come soon. A downtown master plan is being created to advise development in the town’s core. Meanwhile, the port has plans for passenger ferry service to Seattle. Kingston is 150 years old, and it’s just getting started.

Hansville plans for future, relishes its past When Bud and Patricia Young saw a valley on Hansville Road in 1996, they knew they had found their place. The couple shared the dream of building a vineyard and in this valley they found all they needed. A southwest-facing hill would give their plants steady sun while the surrounding hills would block cold winds. In the grueling years of work that followed, the Youngs discovered that more than weather and soil, neighbors would make the Hansville Hill Vineyard flourish. For planting, pruning and picking, they’ve had volunteers helping the whole way. Neighbors were there to roll out netting when birds marauded the vineyard last summer and an even larger crew came to pick the seven-ton harvest.
“We had about 40 people come out to help,� Bud Young said. “It was very cool.� Collaboration is a cornerstone of life in the North End, where residents have teamed to build trails and plan for the future. These efforts often start at the Greater Hansville Community Center, a building at Buck Lake County Park, west of Hansville Road, which plays host to a steady lineup of parties and events through the year.

It’s also a town hall, where the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council — a committee associated with the county — has regular meetings. Its members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and, in part, serve as liaisons between Hansville residents and the county. The Advisory Council is in the midst of creating a master plan for the area, which will guide future land use decisions. A first phase of the plan was accepted by

A Look At Then & Now
If any event in Poulsbo’s history overshadowed all others and worked to color the town’s character, the steamboat war of the early 20th century is undoubtedly it. Surrounded by water, Puget Sound was dependent on steamboats for nearly all travel and commerce. Being a peninsula jutting into Puget Sound made Kitsap County most vulnerable to the whims of the companies who controlled the docks, wharves, and steamers. The independent-minded residents along the shores of Liberty Bay demanded some control over schedules, fares, and freight charges. If they couldn’t have that control, perhaps war was the only way to resolution and peace. Pg. 122 The Spirit of Poulsbo The years 1940 through 1969 can well be termed the Bridge Era for Poulsbo in more ways than one. Two major bridges tying Poulsbo to both Bainbridge Island and the Olympic Peninsula provided the physical connections to help the community become a crossroads of travel between Seattle and the coast. In addition, the dramatic population growth brought by World War II ushered in Poulsbo’s change from sleepy little village to thriving city. Less formal organizations, including the Coffee Klatch, Hansville Ladies Aid, Flotsam and Jetam Garden Club and various church groups, are active in improving North End neighborhoods. Engaged residents can stay on top of issues at www.hansville.org, a clearing house for community information. Buck Lake Park is the scene of summer concerts and the annual Hansville Rummage Sale. Ballfields, picnic areas and easy access for swimmers, rowers and anglers make it a popular gathering place. But it’s just one of many. At the peninsula’s northeast corner, the iconic Point No Point Lighthouse stands sentinel over another county park and wetland preserve. The long stretch of sandy beach is a second home for many families, fishermen and frisbee-fetching dogs during summer months. Even kiteboarders occasionally cruise offshore. The Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse preservation group helps maintain the property and the Lighthouse Society was recently awarded a large grant for restoration work. A new gift shop and interpretive center will be installed in the former light keeper’s workshop. Nearby Norwegian Point Park is the site of former fishing resorts and also offers a beach and views of Puget Sound. The county-owned park opened relatively recently, but long-range planning continues. The northwestern point is known as Foulweather Bluff, a headland at the mouth of Hood Canal. The Nature Conservancy manages a preserve at the bluff, which provides great birding and equally spectacular views. A trail to the preserve begins off Twin Spits Road. For an extended hike, walkers can
access the vast Hansville Greenway from Buck Lake Park. The citizen Greenway Association has worked to string together trail easements linking Hood Canal to Puget Sound. Kitsap County and Olympic Property Group have helped bring the plan to fruition. Maps are available at the trailheads. Hansville has no aspirations to be a shopping mecca, but comforts can still be found. The Hansville Store has ice cream, soda, coffee, sandwiches, wine and plenty of other provisions. It’s back room doubles as a clubhouse, where community groups congregate for coffee. In this tip of the Kitsap Peninsula, residents are still relishing rural life, while facing the future together.

A century ago, the Port Gamble mill was in full production. Below it would hum the sounds of its workers jetting in various directions, while women in full skirts and men in waistcoats strolled through the town. Though the mill has been closed for more than a decade now, the town still bustles in these modern times, largely because of its history. Port Gamble is a scenic community that overlooks the Hood Canal. It offers a blazing pallette of colors in the fall, spring and summer. When the mill shut down in 1995, the township’s economy was devastated, but the community held steadfast. Olympic Property Group, which owns the township, has a long history of working with the Port Gamble community members to maintain the quality of life to which they have become accustomed. Port Gamble has built up a reputation as a great destination for a day trip for residents of neighboring Jefferson and King counties, especially during the summer when special events take place, including a medieval fair and a Civil War reenactment. Other events like ghost walks, walking tours, the annual fruitcake contest and an old-fashioned Country Christmas are helping the town draw visitors year round. Olympic Property Group has made efforts in the last decade to revive the town, bringing in retail business and attracting a number of event producers who’ve brought their festivals, reenactments and

Port Gamble’s annual Civil War reenactments gather hundreds of war buffs from around the state. hot rods to town. Besides revisioning the town, OPG is taking the lead on a trails network, called “The String of Pearls,” that will connect trails in and around Port Gamble and other property the company owns, with similar trails joining North Kitsap communities. The project is in the planning stages now, but with the help of a huge team of representatives from community and recreation members throughout the county, it’s no doubt that it, too, will become another facet of this North End gem. Olympic Property Group has plans to further develop Port Gamble and its environs, including bringing an
old working farm back to life. Eventually, the farm may get back to producing organic vegetables and flowers for sale to residents and at the outdoor market. Possibilities also include a brewery, winery and college, all contributing to an enriched future and solid economic base with a nod to the past. The Port Gamble General Store also underwent a sizable remodel in 2007 and reopened with more of its authentic historical attributes on display. Recently re-opened under new ownership, it is a favorite Port Gamble dining and shopping destination.

Suquamish continues to celebrate milestones

The Suquamish celebrated the opening of the House of Awakened Culture last spring.
The people of Suquamish will celebrate a milestone in 2010. August 2010 marks the 100th annual observance of Chief Seattle Days in the little town nestled along the shores of Agate Passage. Chief Seattle, or Sealth as he is sometimes called, was a member of the Suquamish tribe and is buried in the Suquamish cemetery. Seattle was known to settlers near Elliott Bay as a kind leader. To show their appreciation and respect, the settlers named their burgeoning town after him. Each year for the past century, a ceremony during Chief Seattle Days celebrates the life of this renowned leader. The festivities include canoe races, a salmon bake, a parade, culture performances and fireworks, among others. This year’s celebration will take place Aug. 20-22. Suquamish also recently celebrated two other landmark events. In 2009, the tribe and the town hosted a massive gathering for local tribes and opened a brand new cultural center. During the first week of August, the shores of Suquamish became the final destination for many local tribes’ annual Tribal Journeys event. Nearly 100 tribal canoes launched from beaches as far north as Vancouver Island in late July en route to Suquamish. This year, the Journeys will land at Suquamish July 12 on their way to the final destination in Neah Bay. The Tribe hoped to begin a new tradition during the 2009 paddle. After serving 70,000 meals to 10,000 people, Suquamish shipped off 4.5 tons of food waste for composting and another four tons of recycling. “We feel like we made a significant contribution to Tribal Journeys as an institution with the things we tried to do here,” Tribal Chair Leonard Forsman said. “It validated our tradition of being a good hosting tribe.”

In March 2009, the Suquamish Tribe celebrated the opening of the House of Awakened Culture, a gathering hall with architecture reminiscent of the tribe’s historical Old Man House. The hall is part of a series of revitalization projects in Suquamish that include a new pier, a refurbishment of Chief Seattle’s gravesite and soon, a new museum. The new Museum and Arts Center is still in the planning phase, and likely will not be open until sometime in 2011. The planned facility will be a 9,000 square foot building located across from the Tribal Center. It will include modern, sophisticated climate control systems and ample space to preserve fragile materials. The center will also include an auditorium, an archive and research room, gift shop and a public meeting room. The tribe will hold a fundraiser for the new museum May 14. The current museum is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday between Oct. 1 and April 30, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week between May 1 and Sept. 30. It is located at 15838 Sandy Hook Road in Suquamish. The Suquamish Citizens’ Advisory Council, formed in 2006, works in conjunction with the tribe to improve the parks, trails and community spaces in town and to create a rapport between tribal and nontribal residents of the area. Businesses in Suquamish are also a large part of the local community. Bella Luna Pizzeria, Troller Tavern and Suquamish Auto anchor the downtown core and their longevity demonstrates a loyal following. The town recently saw the opening of a new general store, the Masi Shop, along the highway. The Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, next to the Agate Pass bridge, also draws people from all over the Northwest to Kitsap County. During the summer months, the Clearwater hosts concerts on its Event Lawn. These and other summer events bring locals out to enjoy the warm weather and stunning natural vistas that remind residents why they live in Suquamish.

A friendly, wooded town by the shore Scenic views, easy access to water and a quaint, small-town feel are all aspects that make Indianola a relaxing weekend destination. Indianola Days, celebrated each summer, is the one weekend of the year when hundreds of Indianola’s closest friends come together to revel in all her beach glory — from racing games to building the craziest, most unique sculptures for sandcastle contests. During the beach-based festival Indianola struts its stuff to visitors. For those lucky enough to call Indianola home, they know it is a unique and close-knit community in North Kitsap. In the remodeled Indianola Clubhouse, residents now have a beautiful building in the center of town that serves as a gathering place for celebrations of any and every kind. Landscaping outside the clubhouse was redone with native plants and the playground behind it has had renovations of its own. Across the street from the clubhouse, civic improvement is evident with the redesigned Bud Merrill Pavilion, site of outdoor barbecues, craft displays and farmers markets. The Saturday market at the pavilion features a gathering of local vendors selling both wares and produce to residents and visitors. The Indianola Country Store and Deli

from out of town, seems to turn out for Indianola Days. The annual celebration features a sand-sculpture competition, salmon bake, talent night, car show, tennis tournament, dance and the everpopular pet parade. The beach is one of the finest amenities to locals, being a private place open only to members of the Indianola Beach Improvement Club, which serves as the loose-knit governing body of the community but also as an organization for all its residents. The 900-foot dock and fishing pier is open to all and often youngsters and adults alike can be seen fishing or jumping off it during warm days. Views of Seattle, Mount Rainier, the Cascade and Olympic mountains and Bainbridge Island are magnificent from the end of the dock. As growth continues in other areas of North Kitsap, Indianola remains, for the most part, unscathed and nestled in the trees, taking care of its residents and celebrating life.

Keyport: 100 (plus) years of history A community that’s spent 110 years honoring the nation’s military will turn its attention inward this year. Shirl Golden, the chair of the Keyport Centennial Plus ... 110 Years of Community, said the hallmark event on Sept. 18 will bring fun and families together to recognize the town for its achievements as “Torpedo Town U.S.A.” The North Kitsap marching band will headline while local jazz and bluegrass bands will round out the music. The Keyport Community Club is sponsoring the festival, which will offer fun by land and by sea. “The Port of Keyport will encourage local boaters and kayakers to visit,” Golden said. While the celebration will be the event of the year, there’s never a dull day at Keyport. The town itself is flush with history for Navy buffs and is the site of the
Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Keyport’s main attraction, the Keyport Naval Undersea Museum, gives visitors taste of a day in the life of a submariner. There are displays of undersea weapons, submarine and diving technology. Little hands are welcome to touch anything that isn’t showcased in glass. The ocean environment section offers up a buoyancy experiment, a microscope for an up-close-and-personal look and the sounds of whales, snapping fish and other oceanic goings on. Other exhibit areas give a nod to the weapons and technology that feed the fascination for the submarine service. A museum display also pays homage to sumbariners’ families. The Keyport Community Club bringsmembers of the walkable community together by hosting a Fourth of July pancake breakfast and town parade and a Christmas progressive dinner. Nestled at the heart of the town is Central Park and the recently refurbished Keyport

The construction dust settles as S’Klallam is a community transformed. The long-awaited youth center on the Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation opened early this year. The youth center was nearly a year and a half in the making and was funded with grant money from Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded a sound recording studio where the youth can gather to fine tune their inner musicians. The youth center is the latest in a long list of new facilities, including the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s House of Knowledge which opened in 2007. It includes a new and expanded library — a branch of Kitsap Regional Library
— which serves the Little Boston community and residents of the Greater Hansville Area. The House of Knowledge, featuring detailed carvings, story poles and other tribal art, also includes a magnificent longhouse, elders’ center and career and education center. The tribe hosts thousands of visitors each year at its Point Casino located just off Hansville Road. The reservation encompasses more than 1,300 acres. Besides development in Little Boston, the S’Klallam retain strong ties with other tribes throughout the Northwest and participates in tribal canoe journeys and other traditional cultural practices. The S’Klallam drummers, singers and dancers perform at events throughout North Kitsap. The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is descended from the Salish who have been well-established in the Puget

A usage agreement with the North Kitsap School District allows Parks and Rec to offer a full slate of classes and athletic leagues year round at schools throughout the district. Programs cover all ages from pre-school to senior citizens. NORTH KITSAP — North Kitsap, already a nature lover’s paradise, has one more park to add to its repertoire. Earlier this year, Heritage Park — a 430-acre park that boasts six miles of walking and biking trails — opened as the result

of a massive volunteer effort. The entrance is located about one mile north of Indianola Road on Miller Bay Road. The North Kitsap Heritage Park Stewardship Group spearheaded the volunteer effort for this park, which is just one of many North Kitsap has to offer.

Old Man House Park Suquamish A one-acre park with 210 feet of saltwater frontage along Agate Pass, Old Man House Park is located on the site of the longhouse that was home to Chief Seattle and the Suquamish Tribe. The structure was typical of the construction used by the Suquamish Tribe. The name Old Man House is a derivative of the Indian word “o-le-man,” meaning strong man. A heritage interpretation in a display shelter depicts the story of Chief Seattle. The park has two unsheltered picnic sites, one with a fire ring.
Buck Lake County Park & Hansville Greenway Hansville Tucked away in the waterside hamlet of Hansville, Buck Lake County Park, located on Buck Lake Road off Hansville Road, has a little bit of everything for outdoor enthusiasts. From a beautiful lake and miles of wooded hiking and equestrian trails to open space fields and a playground, the park has numerous offerings available including trout fishing and swimming in the lake, a boat ramp for non-motorized watercraft and trailheads to the Hansville Greenway Wildlife Corridor. Maps for the trails that stretch to Hood Canal and Point No Point are available at the trailhead.
Point No Point County Park Hansville This three-acre park, located at the end of Point No Point Road off Hansville Road, is home to the historic Point No Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a destination for many and is open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, April through September, for docent-led tours. There are also picnic tables and a sandy beach perfect for beachcombing. The beach is also a favorite place for anglers to fish for the historic run of Coho salmon offshore. Piles of driftwood make the beach a great place for kids to construct driftwood houses. With its wide expanse, it’s a perfect place to stroll with dogs, fly kites, build sand castles

and spend a great day at the beach. The U.S. Lighthouse Society moved its national headquarters and archives to the old keepers’ quarters at the park.
Norwegian Point Park Hansville This three-acre park in downtown Hansville is undergoing a master planning process and is the site of former fishing resorts where an old boathouse, cabins and other structures still stand. The park offers a pristine, sandy shoreline that looks out to Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island and Mount Baker. Ample parking is available.
Foulweather Bluff Preserve Hansville Two miles northwest of Hansville, the Foulweather Bluff Preserve is tucked away off Twin Spits Road, accessible by a trail that meanders through the forest and comes out on a sandy beach along the shore of Hood Canal. Featuring stands of red alder, second-growth western red cedar, western hemlock and the occasional Douglas fir, the 101-acre preserve is owned by the Nature Conservancy of Washington and was established in 1967. More than 300 species of plants can be found. The preserve also has a brackish marsh sheltering many bird species including winter wrens and red-breasted nuthatches. Because this is a preserve, dogs and other pets are not allowed.
Park Poulsbo This 6.5-acre park has beach access to Hood Canal with a fabulous view of the Hood Canal Bridge and Olympic Mountains. The boat launch and ample trailer parking make this a favorite place for fishermen to get out on the water. There is also a fishing pier, restrooms, picnic shelter, playground and picnic areas, and it’s a great place for kayakers to come ashore.
A Quiet Place Park Kingston From Highway 104 in Kingston turn left on Ohio Street. Parking is just below the entrance to the trail. The 9.3-acre county park features walking trails, viewpoints and an unspoiled forest.
Arness Roadside County Park Kingston Located on South Kingston Road, just a short

stretch from Highway 104, Arness Roadside County Park rests on Appletree Cove and has a sandy beach frequented by kids on hot summer days. The tidal flows in and out of the estuary stir up the sea life and attract eagles, osprey and blue heron. Picnic areas with barbecue stands and a restroom are available.
Carpenter Lake Natural Reserve & Wildlife Sanctuary Kingston Carpenter Lake is the center of this 67-acre county nature preserve. A boardwalk with numerous viewing platforms leads across a salt marsh and rare bog to the lake. The trailhead is located behind Richard Gordon Elementary School off Barber Cut Off Road.
Billie Johnson Skate Park Kingston This local skate park, located at 26200 Lindvog Road, is a favorite hangout for anyone honing their skateboarding and BMX tricks.

Indianola Waterfront and Woodland Preserve Indianola The Indianola Waterfront and Woodland Preserve is a magnificent 113 acres of undeveloped land with rough walking trails and a seasonal stream that runs down to Miller Bay. Purchased by the county from the Bloedel Family Trust, it was later acquired in the late 1990s by the Indianola Land Trust, a chapter of the Great Peninsula Conservancy. Now permanently protected as public land, it also includes access to a low-bank beach on Puget Sound, accessed from a trail that crosses a tidal estuary. The park is located near Seaview Avenue and Gerald Cliff Drive off Indianola Road.

Kola Kole Park Kingston Kola Kole Park, part of Kingston’s Village Green and located at 11128 NE Maine Street, features the Ed Moon ball field, a playground, basketball and pickle ball courts.
Kitsap Memorial State Park Lofall Located on Highway 3 north of Hood Canal Bridge on Lofall, this park features a rocky beach full of hidden treasures, a large baseball and soccer field, playground and campground with numerous sites and small cabins.

Waterfront Park Poulsbo This beautiful park along Liberty Bay in downtown Poulsbo includes Kvelstad pavilion

On shore Naval Undersea Museum Keyport Located in Keyport off Highway 3 and Route 308, the museum is home to a trove of information on deep-sea exploration, diving and submarine, mine and torpedo warfare. Significant artifacts on display include major U.S. torpedoes; a Confederate mine from the Civil War; torpedo tubes from the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Tecumseh; and a simulation of the control room from the fast attack submarine Greenling. Suquamish The Suquamish Museum is an internationally acclaimed facility located at 15838 Sandy Hook Road, near the Agate Pass Bridge. It is Washington’s second oldest Native American museum and was named as the best historical museum of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest by the Smithsonian Institute. Its collection includes 122 artifacts, more than 9,000 photographs and 150 oral histories. The gravesite of Chief Sealth, for whom the city of Seattle is named, is located nearby on a hillside above downtown Suquamish. Kingston’s Farmers Market has root veggies galore and other tasty edibles.
Farmers markets grow healthy following in North Kitsap Kingston Farmers Market May-October The Kingston Farmers Market, located at Mike Wallace Memorial Park at the Port of Kingston, starts May 1 and ends Oct. 9. They range from local organic farmers to crafters and artisans, selling homegrown and homemade goods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. The market also has weekly entertainment from local and regional musical acts. Some of the locally grown and produced items include herbs, plants, eggs, honey and freshpicked flowers. The market draws artisans from all over Kitsap County and the Olympic Peninsula and unique gifts are easy to come by. Fresh baked goods and coffee are available, along with food vendors. Grab a plate of some great food and head over to the picnic tables for a savory meal in a festival atmosphere. Washington State University Master Gardeners are on hand to give gardening tips on everything from worm bins to perennial problem solving. Junior vendors can also set up a table and sell their own homemade goods. WIC & SFMNP checks are welcome.

Poulsbo Farmers Market April-October The Poulsbo Farmers Market’s season takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, April through October at the Poulsbo Village Medical and Dental Center at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Iverson Street in Poulsbo. Opening day this year is April 12. Offering more than just fresh organic produce, locally made wine, cheese, seafood and honey are also available. The market also features live music with a variety of bands and performers each week.
