reating good dental hygiene habits in children is one of the best things parents can do to ensure their child will have healthy teeth in adulthood. The dentists of Eastside Pediatric Dental Group (EPDG) have a few simple tips that will help your child achieve a lifetime of healthy smiles. “The state of their baby teeth is an indicator of what kind of oral health they’re going to have in their adult teeth,” said pediatric dentist John Liu of the Eastside Pediatric Dental Group in Issaquah.
“It’s almost similar to doing it to yourself.” As soon as your child shows interest in brushing their own teeth, let them try it, but always brush their teeth afterward to get what they missed. “As children get better, parents will notice, and have a good idea of when they can do it on their own,” Liu said.
A common age when children should be ready to brush their own teeth is age 6, but Liu tells parents, “A better marker is when your child can write in cursive. Writing in cursive is a good “A clean environment gauge that kids have the dexterity to move the brush in semi-circular motions and to for the teeth to come reach their back teeth.”

want to know what’s going on in their lives.” Issaquah and Sammamish residents have two options when it comes to Columbia Athletic Clubs.
According to Nikki Brown, Fitness Director at Columbia Fitness-Sammamish, there are ways to simplify a group lifestyle change.
Columbia Fitness-Sammamish is located north of Safeway off of Northeast 8th Street. The Pine Lake Club is located behind QFC off of 228th Avenue Southeast.
“Find things that appeal to your family, that everybody will enjoy doing,” she said. Brown also noted that it’s important to implement healthier eating habits for everyone. “Your kids are getting healthy fuel for their school day and they’re able to focus better and have more sustained energy throughout the day,” she said. “It’s also important for parents to have more energy to provide a more active lifestyle for their kids.” Finally, Brown pointed out its not necessary to make all lifestyle changes at once — take small steps.
Both clubs feature top certified trainers and a nutritionist, but offer slightly different amenities. Sammamish is a smaller facility that focuses primarily on fitness, while Pine Lake is a 62,000 square-foot facility that offers four tennis courts, a 25-yard lap pool, a kids pool, a sauna, steam rooms, “If you make small Jacuzzis, a basketball court and exercise changes in your studios.

Always consider the builder’s reputation: how long they’ve been in business, their policies, ethics and morals. What do others say about that particular builder? Have an understanding of the quality that the builder will provide. Drive to the neighborhood you’re considering and get a feel for the overall quality of the homes. You want to know exactly what you’re signing up for. Make sure you have a floor plan that will give you flexibility. As families grow, children get older and situations change, you want a home that will be able to accommodate those changes.

Get an understanding of the builder’s customer service and warranty.

Check in on the financial stability of the builder. Make sure that the builder is everything it says it is, and that its reputation matches its financial strength.

“Knowing the quality and features of a new home, as well as having it be in the best location and community for your needs, are very important when choosing the perfect home!” – Steve Hiller
There’s no secret to their success. “It merely comes from having a pride for integrity, including the use of environmentally sustainable practices such as energy efficient heating and insulation products,” said Steve Hiller, a principal with Murray Franklyn.
“From the moment people drive into our neighborhoods they immediately experience a well designed development as well as the see elegant homes’ architecture and engineering, which is what you get when you have as much passion in what you do as we do,” Hiller said. People are allowed to either move into a brand new established Murray Franklyn home or be instrumental in personalizing their own home before it is completed. For example, some families may want to be able to accommodate guests or relatives, so they could have a small bathroom or extra room added to the main floor. Others may want a bonus room for a theater,
Murray Franklyn makes it all possible. Plus, their four decades of experience offer the benefits of better design and higher quality for the value, and the ability to work with people who have sometimes as much as 15 to 20 years of experience. In addition to a builder’s reputation, Hiller said people should consider location when looking into purchasing a home. At the end of the day, Hiller said, the high quality of the Murray Franklyn’s homes are made with the Eastside in mind. “The people who live in places like Sammamish are some of the best at what they do, whether they’re doctors, lawyers, insurance people, writers, poets or artists,” Hiller said. “We understand how accomplished they are and that it’s our job to make them proud of where they live and provide them with the best home possible.”

How to purchase a new or used vehicle
TIPS W If you like the idea of driving a more expensive vehicle for a smaller monthly payment, leasing is a great option. However, if eventually owning the car is important, financing with a loan is the way to go. Understand the conditions of your warranty. All new and many used vehicles arrive with a warranty covering unexpected repairs. Be sure to understand the duration and covered components of the warranty. A typical warranty might be written “48/50,000” meaning that coverage lasts either 48 months from the initial purchase or until the vehicle has 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Keep a clean driving record. Some insurers offer a discount to drivers who consistently prove to be safe drivers by not receiving moving violations or being involved in accidents. At the least, keeping a clean record will prevent extra surcharges from being added to your premium.

TIPS
1
Talk to lenders and ask questions. Be involved in the process. Make sure that any fears you might have are talked about. Don’t fly blind.
2
Take the time to understand the costs and fees associated with a mortgage. Know there will be fees that cover the cost of processing and underwriting the loan. Closing costs should be taken into consideration.
3
Get pre-approved before you find a home. Don’t find the home of your dreams first and then become disappointed when you aren’t approved for a loan that covers it! Become pre-approved then let the house hunt begin.
4
Be prepared to provide extensive documentation for your lender. Tax returns, bank statements, pay stubs, and proper identification are examples of what you’ll need to present to your lender.
5
Don’t believe everything you read online. The old saying ‘If it’s too good to be true, it might be,’ should be kept in mind when reading mortgage information online. The best way is to call the lender directly and get written estimates to compare side by side.

Consider interviewing a potential doctor before scheduling an appointment. Naturopaths generally spend a great deal of time with their patients. Find a physician who you feel comfortable talking to. After the interview, make sure that you feel confident that the doctor can help you meet your health goals. Be leery of any doctor who only practices “natural” medicine. It is important to have a healthcare provider who is open to doing what is right for your particular case, which may mean utilizing both conventional and alternative medicine. Don’t forget that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstones of health. There is no doctor, medication or supplement that can replace a healthy lifestyle. That said, a good physician will be able to provide you with many tools to improve your health and lifestyle. If you do take supplements other than a multivitamin, our top picks are: • Vitamin D • Probiotics • Fish Oil • Bioflavonoids • Calcium/Magnesium Make sure and consult you’re your health care provider regarding the correct dosage for your individual needs. The FDA does not carefully regulate the supplement industry, so we suggest that you use only pharmaceutical grade supplements which have been independently evaluated as having met the highest regulatory standard. These are usually available at compounding pharmacies and through healthcare providers.

If you’re health conscious, train yourself to enjoy more dark and bittersweet chocolates, which have great health values. Fact: Dark chocolate has more than five times the antioxidants than blueberries. Chocolates make a great gift. Ask Boehm’s friendly sales staff for help choosing the perfect presentation for any event. If a recipe asks for chocolate, use the darkest chocolate available, such as bittersweet, as it will lessen the sugary taste and intensify the chocolate flavor.

Prepare your palate by avoiding any strong flavors such as garlic, onions, pickles or fatty foods before tasting chocolate products.
5
We suggest taking a sip of room temperature water between tastes to clear your palate.

How to eat fine chocolate W hile few have problems enjoying gourmet chocolates, learning what distinguishes the mini masterpieces can be an amusing way to take a love for the confections to the next level. If done right, a keen palate can pull fruit tastes from Madagascar beans and floral notes from Ecuador.
Tasting chocolate is much like tasting wine, and for those who don’t feel the two should be mutually exclusive, Boehms has a whole line of chocolates aimed at helping people pair their wines. When setting up a tasting, darker is better, said Master Chocolatier Bernard Garbusjuk. Dark chocolate has less sugar and cream, so it’s healthier and more flavorful.
experience, start by going to a shop where you feel comfortable asking questions and the staff can give sufficient answers, Bernard said. Avoiding busy times and holidays will also give you a more pleasant experience where you don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed.
“If you’re accustomed to milk chocolates, grow a taste for darker chocolate by starting with dark chocolate filled truffles.” – Bernard Garbusjuk
If you’re accustomed to milk chocolates, grow a taste for darker chocolate by starting with dark chocolate filled truffles, he said. There are also more varieties of dark chocolate to choose from. This is especially true at Boehms, because Bernard travels the world looking for the best. Inspired by a recent trip to Europe, Bernard introduced The Rovereto Rounds sampler in November. Twelve chocolate disks are artfully spiced and topped with rare embellishments such as lavender, rose, hibiscus and green tea. To make your own tasting
As the store owner, he makes sure all of his staff are properly trained about chocolate. It also helps that the chocolates are manufactured just behind the storefront. When it’s time to taste, cut the chocolates into small bites to share. It’s less overwhelming and just as tasty. If you like something, take another piece to find a deeper flavor, Bernard said. For those interested in pairing with wine, reds have a strong enough flavor to stand up to cocoa as well as champagne and ports.
Also try experimenting with dark beers and smokier chocolates such as sea salt caramels, almond clusters or Boehm’s Scotch Treat. “Spend more time exploring,” he said. Visiting Boehms is an experience in its own, with the historic European Edelweiss Chalet, and a window tour that allows visitors to watch the chocolates being made. Guided tours through the factory, chalet and chapel are also available by reservation. “It’s unlike any mall experience,” said daughter Narissa.

Eat a sensible diet. What is good for your heart is good for your brain.
How to keep the brain agile By Dawn Klingensmith CTW FEATURES
Does the herb gingko biloba guard against memory loss? Forget about it.

“Follow your heart” is sound advice for making lifestyle choices that are good for brain health. “Anything that’s good for your heart is good for your brain,” Sink says, and that includes exercise as well as a diet low in animal fat and high in fruits and veggies.
preponderance of research shows gingko does nothing to sharpen or preserve memory, nor does it stave off or slow the Physical fitness and mental sharpness go together. A study published progress of Alzheimer’s disease. But though there’s no magic in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that adults ages 65 and pill to keep your mind from springing leaks, there are plenty of proven older who exercised more than three days a week had a lower risk of natural ways to help keep your memory intact. Another study looked at teens, can prevent cognitive decline by maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle. 30-somethings and 50-somethings who exercised and found that all This includes exercise, getting enough sleep, not smoking, being social, three groups had a decreased risk of dementia in their 70s. eating a sensible diet and limiting alcohol to one or two drinks a day “You don’t need to go out and become a marathon (a small amount of alcohol has been shown to runner. What stays in your brain depends in part on what goes in your mouth. “Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain,” says Dr. Fernando Gómez-Piniella, professor of neurosurgery and physiological science, University of California, Los Angeles.
whole-health issue, and we need to think of it as such.” – Dr. Cynthia Green,
Assistant clinical psychiatry professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York
Studies suggest Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, walnuts, kiwi fruit, to name a few) promote synaptic plasticity, or the synapses’ ability to change strength, Gómez-Piniella says. Synapses connect neurons in the brain and are often described as “firing” when learning occurs. Memory retention also occurs at the synapses. Recent studies also have shown a lower risk of mental decline among people who follow a “Mediterranean diet” rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. In addition, observational studies suggest that a diet high in antioxidants is protective of cognitive function, says Dr. Kaycee Sink, associate professor of geriatrics and director of the Memory Assessment Clinic at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. Neither Omega-3 fatty acids nor antioxidants in the form of supplements had protective effects when studied, though.
Our brains need regular workouts, too. Challenging your brain with mental exercises is believed to stimulate communication among brain cells. “Brain tissue is not a muscle,” Sink says, “but it has the capacity to remodel and make new connections.”
In order to do so, it needs to be exercised by doing something cognitively challenging. “Look for activities out of your comfort zone. If you like to read, try a pottery class,” says Green, says Green, author of “Brainpower Game Plan” (Rodale, 2009), her latest of three books on memory. However, you don’t need to puzzle over calculus problems or study Mandarin Chinese. Board games, crossword puzzles, or even a group discussion can build mental muscle. In fact, staying social has been shown to potentially cut your risk for memory impairment in half, Green says. Multitasking leads to memory lapses because our attention is too divided. “You have to maintain focus on something you want to commit to memory,” Sink says. While it’s not as though cramming new data into our brains causes older data to “fall out,” it’s true that the brain can only process so much information at a time, she adds. And what it can’t process, it can’t retain. © CTW Features
