e readily admit the winter months can get pretty dreary here in the Puget Sound region. It’s dark when we head to work and school and it’s dark when we head for home. And, often, it’s raining. That doesn’t mean we have to live sheltered lives, however. There’s plenty to get out and see and do – it’s just a matter of looking around and, sometimes, getting involved.

On any given day between now and February, there’s something going on, somewhere. This guide doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but there’s a good sampling of things to do to keep us busy during the days to come.

Downtown Enumclaw will come alive as 16 local businesses offer tastings from 16 wineries as part of a Wine Walk. Carrying the theme “Passport of Washington Wine Country,” the event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. It is sponsored by the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce. For $25, participants get to keep a commemorative crystal glass and receive tickets for 10 tastings. Tickets are on sale, available at both the chamber office and at Sip City Wines on Cole Street. The bridge in Sumner is being lit again, a joint effort of The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse and Windmill Gardens.

The Sumner Downtown Association considers the bridge lighting the opening event of the holiday season and it includes music and fireworks. Hundreds of people typically attend the bridge lighting. Following the bridge lighting, people may go to Windmill Gardens and admire the more than 20,000 outdoor lights on display. Windmill Gardens decorates with poinsettias and wreaths. Permits to cut Christmas trees in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest will be sold through Dec. 24. Maps and information about cutting areas are provided where permits are sold, including the Enumclaw office of the National Forest Service. Permits cost $10 each, one tree per permit, with a tree height limit of 12 feet. The permits are nonrefundable. Trees taller than 12 feet require a special permit at a minimum price of $20. Credit cards are not accepted at Forest Service offices. The Enumclaw office is at 450 Roosevelt Ave. E. and can be reached at 360-825-6585. Call for office hours.

New features will greet Crystal visitors

When Crystal Mountain Sales and Marketing Director Tiana Enger says, “We’ve been very busy,” it almost sounds like an understatement.

During the summer, the local ski resort has been working feverishly to turn it into a year-round family destination.

The finishing touches were recently put on a gondola that will whisk skiers and non-skiers to the summit, a jib park and a swipe-and-go ticketing system to get skiers to the slopes faster.

A total of $6.25 million was spent on improvements and additions this summer alone. More than $25 million has been invested in the area during the past decade.

Add to that the weather forecasters’ prediction for a La Niña year and excitement on the mountain is running high.

It’s already looking like winter up there.

The last time a big La Niña came through in 1998-99 it dumped 592 inches of the white stuff at Crystal Mountain.

Mount Rainier Gondola Popular at bigger U.S. ski resorts and in Canada and Europe, the addition of the Mount Rainier Gondola, the only one at a ski area in Washington state, puts Crystal Mountain on the cutting edge.

Nestled into a cozy cabin, the gondola will transport skiers and foot passengers almost 2,500 vertical feet over alpine terrain from the base area to the top of the mountain in less than 10 minutes. Each of the 18 cabins seats eight passengers. At the top, riders will find the Summit House, a breathtaking vista of Mount Rainier and some of the best terrain found on the mountain.

Enger said the gondola will open many opportunities to visitors like First Tracks Breakfast, aprés-ski and dinner at the Summit House, scenic rides for foot passengers and early and late-spring skiing.

Magical Morning, a popular offering of the Enumclaw Parks and Recreation Department, is planned for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Enumclaw Expo Center fieldhouse. There’s a $5 admission fee for anyone 3 and older. The price of admission includes a catered breakfast, kids crafts and entertainment by the Susan Pascal Duo. For an additional fee, Santa will be on hand for photos.

RFID Ticketing System Direct ticketing with a Radio Frequency ID, or GO Card, is expected to save people time and money.

The GO Card ticket program allows skiers and riders to load tickets in advance online and head straight to the lift. Enger said guests will get a GO Card at the window when they purchase a ticket and it’s theirs to reload and keep forever. RFID is a small circuit integrated into all season passes and GO Cards that validates as a skier passes by the gate. GO Cards must be loaded with single or multi-day tickets in advance.

Lighting up the season is made easier

At Christmas time, today’s architecture can leave homeowners scratching their heads trying to figure out how to hang lights off those awkward gables and long eave spans.

The folks at McLendon Hardware can help.

This is the fifth year, the Sumner home improvement store is offering commercial bulk cord so home and business owners can customize the length of light strands.

Each bulk cord can accommodate the traditional larger and ministyle outdoor lamps.

“We were the pioneers, I’m sure,” said Jenne Ford, lead gardener and holiday lighting expert.

The cord, which comes in white or green, costs between 29 and 34 cents

per foot.

“It’s a continuous strand of lights,” Ford said. “The advantage is it doesn’t have a fuse, so you can cut it to the size you want.”

The downside, homeowners have to put on their own plugs.

Ford said even that is simple and easy to do.

“I can show any customer in one minute how to do it,” she said.

An added bonus, McLendon carries a rainbow of bulk C7 and C9 bulbs – 23 assorted colors in solid, transparent and metallic. For about a quarter apiece, customers can choose pink, blue, purple, gold, orange, yellow or traditional green, white and red.

“That’s the beauty, any color, any style,” she said.

This year, the store is also offering light-emitting diode bulbs, which do not have the circuit limits of the incandescent C7 or C9s and offer incredible energy savings.

Remember to dress for winter weather It’s the eternal dilemma of cold weather wardrobing: wear enough layers to feel warm outside and you’ll be sweltering once you reach your indoor destination.

Under-dress for indoor comfort and you could spend your commuting time shivering.

With temperatures dropping and heating prices always on the rise, it’s more important than ever to dress right for winter this year. Fortunately, there’s a new generation of advanced insulating apparel available to help you beat the cold, whether you’re heading outdoors or simply trying to take the chill off after lowering the thermostat at home.

Thanks to the popularity of winter sports, a lot of Americans now understand the benefits of layering clothes when exercising in cold weather – and the special importance of a “base layer” that helps retain body warmth by moving perspiration away from our skin. But when it comes to workday wardrobes, a lot of people still associate “dressing warm” with thick thermal long johns that are hard to get on and off, and too heavy to wear underneath our clothes once we reach the office.

However, the latest looks in “warmwear” solve that problem with base layer designs that are far less bulky and much more comfortable than traditional long johns.

Incorporating the same breakthrough fabrics and performance features used in outdoor active wear, these techenhanced innovations provide the right kind of warmth without weight for everyday use, indoors and out. Instead of leaving you feeling overstuffed and overheated, some of these products can actually improve your appearance.

Besides emphasizing the importance of choosing the right base layer to beat the cold, the following tips can help everyone stay warm this winter: • Remember to breathe. Look for outerwear made from materials that are breathable, as well as weather-resistant.

You want to lock out the cold and wind, but just as with your base layer, you need a coat that transports perspiration away from your body, rather than locking it in. Also, make sure that you buy outerwear with enough room to accommodate two or more under layers: the air between each layer helps you retain body heat.

• Think with your head. Forty percent or more of body heat can be lost when you leave your head exposed, so wear a hat, and protect your face and neck with a high collar and scarf.

• One pair of socks is enough. Contrary to popular belief, layering your socks doesn’t add warmth: instead, it can restrict circulation and actually make your feet colder.

• A handy idea. Mittens provide greater warmth than gloves, if less dexterity. Regardless of which you choose, look for styles in waterproof, breathable materials, and don’t buy them too tight, since air space at the tips of your fingers provides needed insulation.

Watch for winter’s hazards Avalanches: Avalanches are most common during or immediately after a storm.

Learn how to recognize avalanche terrain and avoid it. Traveling or camping in avalanche zones could result in a tragic end to your trip.

Contact a ranger for daily weather and avalanche hazard forecasts, maps of areas to avoid, and general avalanche information. If someone in your group is buried, do you know what to do? Do you have probes and shovels to rescue the victim?

Hy p o t h e r m i a : Hypothermia has often been called the “killer of the unprepared.” A combination of cold weather, wet snow and wind can eas-

ily rob a person of essential body heat. If left untreated, hypothermia can lead to unconsciousness and death.

Make sure your group is adequately clothed and prepared to prevent hypothermia. This means wearing wool or synthetics like pile or polypropylene (never cotton) to help retain body heat when clothing gets wet, having adequate wind and rain protection, wearing waterproof boots, eating frequently, avoiding exhaustion and seeking shelter.

Speaking of which...

Shelters: Snow caves, tents and igloos can all be excellent shelters from the hostile weather outside, but they can also become killers

themselves. Make sure that whatever shelter you’re in, you have adequate ventilation to prevent being overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. It is especially important to maintain good ventilation while cooking, since cooking in shelters will consume oxygen rapidly. During snowy, windy conditions this means going outside to dig out your tent or clear igloo vents. Collapse igloos and snow caves after use.

The Plateau region is a great place for those who appreciate the outdoors. But our natural attractions can present a hazard even for experienced outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some things to think about.

Weather: Although winter offers its own special rewards, it can also be a hazardous time for the unprepared. Be aware that mountain weather changes rapidly; a pleasant outing can quickly be transformed into a survival ordeal.

Navigation in harsh winter conditions can be extremely difficult. It is usually better to camp and wait for clearing weather than it is to go on and risk getting lost.

Slipping down a mountainside never grows old... just ask kids of any age!

Sleds and toboggans are a great way to enjoy a snowy hillside. There are very few official sledding areas, but locals might suggest some traditional sledding runs in the area. For formal sledding or tubing, head to Snoqualmie or the Paradise side of Mount Rainier, where you can speed downhill all day.

When the snow flies at lower levels, kids take advantage of slippery conditions – even if there’s just a couple of inches covering the ground.

Even if it seems a bit creepy, youngsters historically flock to the hillside at the Buckley Cemetery.

Really, though, all that’s needed is a bit of a slope.

Another way to enjoy the snowy landscape – a slower and quieter way– is to slip on some snowshoes.

Today’s snowshoes are lightweight, durable and easy to get on and off. You can even jog in some. If you’re still not sure it’s for you, many local ski shops rent them and Mount Rainier has traditionally offered snowshoe walks on weekends into the spring.

Mount Rainier opens up for snowshoeing each year, with exact days depending upon weather conditions.

Popular, guided walks have always been limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those interested may inquire at Longmire Museum or Jackson Visitor Center information desk.

Don’t forget hats, mittens, suitable boots (you will sink into the snow even with snowshoes on), sunscreen and sunglasses.
