Helloooo Halifax!
I am excited and giddy to present to you my first ever full-length play. Mischief is a mixture of all things I love about theatre. Comedy, tragedy, heart, weirdness, peculiar questions, truth, when we decide to steer away from truth, metaphor, fools, and really great acting.
I wrote Mischief in my Toronto apartment in the west end during a cold and isolating January. I was homesick for Nova Scotia, painfully single, and in-between gigs. During these times of loneliness, it is most important to create stories if you’re bored of your own. I stayed put in my apartment, with my roommate’s popcorn bowl as a co-writer, and created characters out of people I loved or have been versions of before.
I wrote the majority of this play in one month. I then went on tour as an actor, finished the play on my plane ride home from Yellowknife- then went right into a workshop the next day with Native Earth Performing Arts to have brilliant artists read it out loud.
Mike Payette was appointed dramaturg of Mischief by Artistic Director Joelle Peters during the Weesageechak Festival of New Works. His thoughtful and precise eye on my work was magic, and I knew his relationship with Mischief was meant to be. When I approached Tarragon Theatre and Native Earth with the idea to program my piece, it all felt really easy. I spent many of my formative years at Native Earth in my twenties, learning from some of the greatest Indigenous artists in the country, surrounded by new works and constant support.
I also grew up with Neptune Theatre, from taking part in their summer camps, teaching camps, directing, taking classes, performing in their touring company, to eventually performing on the Fountain Hall stage.
With this play being so driven by heart, it’s truly incredible to see that the journey of the play holds the same narrative.
Thank you to my loving partner Mitchell Saddleback, for being the first person to ever read it, and for uplifting me ever since. I dedicate this play to my family.
Thank you for being my number one support. Thank you for teaching me that being mischievous is the most fun way to play with life. Grammy Grey, Auntie, Uncle Gordon, Granny, Roddy, Mom, Dad, Tracy, Tim, Emily and Melanie- this is for us.

WE’RE THRILLED TO BE STARTING OUR SEASON WITH THE WORLD PREMIERE OF LISA NASSON’S MISCHIEF A COMEDY SET RIGHT HERE IN HALIFAX!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN IT LIVE IN TWO WORLDS?
Between mystical visits from an ancient ancestor, every-day life at her job at her Uncle’s convenience store on the Rez, and her community rallying to tear down a statue of her city’s founder, Brooke feels torn. She is struggling to reconcile her Mi’kmaw heritage and living in a place founded by a British military officer hell bent on destroying her ancestors.
This gentle comedy asks the question - how can a woman whose family lives in a society placed under a microscope of stereotype, carry the resilience of her ancestors to embrace their existence?

CHAIR’S MESSAGE
Welcome to Neptune Theatre, and thank you for joining us for the world premiere of Mischief by Lisa Nasson.
It is an honour to share this extraordinary story, one that carries humour, heart, and heritage in equal measure. Mischief invites us into Brooke’s world, where the weight of history meets the urgency of the present. At its core, it is a story of identity, legacy, and the lasting impact of colonization, told with honesty, wit, and profound humanity.
We are grateful to our partners at Tarragon Theatre and Native Earth Performing Arts for helping bring this important new work to life.
At Neptune, we believe theatre should reflect the full scope of our shared experience, offering stories that challenge us, connect us, and remind us of what we hold in common.
This work is only possible because of the generosity of our patrons and donors. Your support ensures that new voices and new stories continue to be heard on our stage.
By being here tonight, you carry this work forward. Enjoy the show.
Scott McGaw Chair, Neptune

Foundation
Welcome to Neptune Theatre and the world premiere of Mischief by Lisa Nasson!
There’s something truly special about developing new plays in Nova Scotia, about Nova Scotia — stories that reflect the people, places, and histories that shape this region. Mischief is one of those rare gems: funny, heartfelt, and rooted deeply in Mi’kma’ki. We’re especially proud to bring Indigenous stories like Lisa’s to the stage - stories that challenge, heal, and celebrate resilience in the face of history.
Creating new work is no small feat, and often a new production is staged once and then never performed again.
To that end, we’re thrilled to partner with Tarragon Theatre and Native Earth Performing Arts to create this production and have it also play in Tkaronto/Toronto, ensuring this story reaches audiences outside Kjipuktuk/ Halifax.
Most of all, we’re grateful to you, our audience - for showing up, leaning in, and supporting new Canadian theatre. Your presence makes all of this possible.
Now, sit back, and enjoy some Mischief.
