Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land.

As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indigenous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.

We recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.

Any videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.

Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Neptune Theatre engages professional technicians represented by IATSE Local 680.

Neptune Theatre acknowledges the support of our government partners:

INDRA EGAN CHRYSALIS MUSIC DIRECTION

When I first became the Artistic Director of Neptune Theatre, in 2018, I learned that I would be inheriting and directing the season-closing musical, programmed by my predecessor, George Pothitos.

That show was Mamma Mia! and this new AD was a wee bit confused, as it didn’t seem like a great fit. I had never thought of myself directing that ABBA show and wondered if had enough meat on its bones to sink my directorial teeth into.

Cut to 6 months later and Mamma Mia! was a huge success for Neptune, breaking box office records, extending time and time again. The show traveled up to Cape Breton for a week of performances and STILL came back to Halifax for another couple of weeks. Halifax loved the glitter, the joy, the catchy songs, the constant dance, endearing characters and unlikely plot devices.

More importantly, I was a 100% convert. I was IN, hook, line and sinker.

It’s a joy to bring it back to the Neptune Theatre stage with a mostly new cast and team. I think now, more than ever, we need the energy and love that this show promotes. We need the sparkle. We crave the songs and the memories of a simpler time. It’s been such a rare treat to revisit this show, a whole pandemic later.

This is a spectacular season of theatre, perhaps the biggest yet. Michelle Langille directs the classic musical The Wizard of Oz this holiday season. Anne-Marie Kerr directs Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. We welcome co-productions with Native Earth Performing Arts and Tarragon Theatre (Lisa Nasson’s Mischief), Eastern Front Theatre (Katerina Bakolias’ The Ghost of Violet Shaw), Imago Theatre (Scout Rexe’s Cult Play), and Ship’s Company Theatre (Mark Crawford’s Chase The Ace). So. Much. Theatre.

Thanks for being here. There’s no place like home. Join us in spreading the #glitterjoy.

CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the start of Neptune Theatre’s 63rd season. We’re so glad you’re here.

Kicking things off with Mamma Mia! feels right. It’s full of heart, high energy, and reminds us why live theatre matters. At its best, theatre brings people together. It invites us to laugh, feel, reflect, and connect with the story on stage and with each other.

That spirit is at the heart of Neptune. For nearly 65 years, this place has been part of Halifax’s cultural fabric. A gathering space, a creative home, and a workplace for hundreds of Nova Scotians who bring these stories to life.

When you show up, you’re part of it. You’re helping sustain meaningful work in the arts and keeping live theatre thriving in the heart of our city.

There’s so much more ahead. From bold new voices to familiar favourites, there’s something here for everyone. Visit neptunetheatre.com or stop by the Box Office. We’d love to welcome you back.

Thanks for being here tonight. It truly means a lot.

JULIE MARTELL

ROLE: Donna NEPTUNE: Controlled Damage, Dear Rita, Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, Beauty and the Beas OTHER: Twenty-five years ago, I was cast as Sophie in the Mirvish production of Mamma Mia! Since then, my journey has taken me to Broadway, Off-Broadway, across stages nationwide, and through nine incredible seasons at the Shaw Festival. One of my most transformative roles, however, has been navigating my own cancer journey. To be back on stage—singing these iconic songs, in this beloved theatre, with this extraordinary company—after not knowing if it would be possible again, is profoundly humbling. Mamma Mia! is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (mti). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by mti. www.mtishows.com

Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form.

MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 100,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 150 countries worldwide.

MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior® shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students.

BENNY ANDERSSON

1946 Benny was born on 16 December in Stockholm. 1952 He received accordion lessons from his father and grandfather.

1964-68 Benny was a member of the Hep Stars, Sweden’s most popular rock band in the Sixties. During this time, he began composing music. ‘Sunny Girl’ and ‘Wedding’ were huge hits for the Hep Stars.

1972-82 ABBA.

1982-84 Benny composed the music (together with Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) for the musical Chess. 1987 He began collaborating with Orsa Spelmän and recorded three albums rooted in Swedish folk music: Klinga Mina Klockor, November 1989 and Fiolen Min. 1990-95 Working with Björn, Benny composed the music to Kristina från Duvemåla, which premiered in October 1995.

1995 Benny received the title of professor from the Swedish government.

2001 His collaboration with Orsa Spelmän led to the formation of Benny Andersson’s Orchestra, a 16-man constellation with vocalists Helen Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg. Thus far, this has resulted in seven CD albums and several summer tours.

2007 Benny was inducted in to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

2008 He was appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012.

Benny Andersson is married to former TV producer Mona Nörklit. They have one child, Ludvig Andersson. Benny also has two children from a previous marriage, Peter Grönvall and Helene Odedal. He has six grandchildren: Charlie, Felix, Fabian, Malin, Viola and Leonard.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS

1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA.

1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice.

1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn.

1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May.

1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002.

1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work.

1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA!.

2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released.

2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers.

2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.
