A fabulous occasion, and an opportunity to meet other like-minded Princess owners, as well as make an utter fool of myself on a Fliteboard! This may have had something to do with the great food and wine provided beforehand. - Tony

Illetas Raft-Up

21st July Platja de ses Illetas, Mallorca was the perfect setting for seven yachts with 32 guests to anchor for a summer raft-up. Everyone was transferred ashore via water taxi, thanks to CCS Marine Yacht Supplier, to enjoy a relaxed lunch at the Balneario Illetas beach club with fabulous food and picturesque views. RETROFIT 8

After leaping behind the glossy galley and whizzing up barista-style drinks in his coffee machine, the conversation flowed. Princess’ interview with Andy kicked-off with a few magic tricks in the saloon of his beloved Princess 23M Motor Yacht – Lucky Ash. Lucky Ash

AFTERBEFOREDISCOVER

The ‘entertainer’

Andy Hobbs is best known locally in Yarmouth as the ‘entertainer’. A motorcycle stuntman in his previous chapter in life, and world recordholder of the one-mile wheelie – blind-folded, he now runs his own successful yacht charter company on the Isle of Wight.

Princess freshened up the headlining in the saloon by recovering it in a faux cream leather finish to replace the faux suede look.

Al-fresco is where you notice most of the retrofit work.

The original bimini has been replaced with a new hydraulic bimini in grey featuring inset lights. ‘A bimini is a ‘must’ as far as I’m concerned as I spend a lot of time out here on the flybridge and I don’t want to burn or get wet. Having a hydraulic bimini makes it so much easier when I’m also taking care of guests in the changeable British weather,’ says Andy.

Discover more about the retrofit service available across the UK, Spain and Balearics online: www.princess.co.uk/aftercare/pmys-individual/

Even though guests charter Lucky Ash to get out on the water and relax, the first thing people ask is, what’s the WIFI code and where can I plug in my laptop/mobile to recharge?

- Andy AFTERBEFORE

Further works on the flybridge included a new teak dining table for entertaining outdoors, having the old console dash units refurbished in a smart carbon fibre coating and installing even more waterproof sockets and upgrading the exterior deck lights. When you see the sound system on the flybridge you quickly grasp a sense of the party vibe on board – yes, he even showed the Princess team a quick film on his iPhone of an occasion delighting his guests with an Elvis impersonator!

Andy has owned his 2004 flybridge for the past 9 years and admits that it has really stood the test of time, but as it's utilised regularly for charter, he decided to make some functional and aesthetic upgrades.

The exterior upholstery on the flybridge and cockpit was replaced with custom-made contemporary 2-tone grey wrap-around seating, along with the sunpads and high back helm seats in Movida. ‘Everything was usually blue and white in the yachting world’ says Andy, 'so I was really keen to update the look of Lucky Ash and I’m absolutely delighted with the results.’

During the winter of 2021/22 Leon McGregor and Peter Harwood at the Saxon Wharf facility began working on the extensive list including installing WIFI, additional sockets, new headlinings, exterior upholstery, covers, teak table, helm seats and bimini, to name a few areas.

To further compliment the new contemporary colour palette of the flybridge, Princess Motor Yacht Sales also repainted the original blue waterline and feature panels in grey anthracite and supplied custom grey warps and fender ties.

He got in touch with Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Swanwick and liaised with the dedicated retrofit team on a works list that was quoted for and approved in just a couple of weeks.

The interior has unmistakable classic Princess styling with a glossy wood finish and cream leather sofas that hug you. She has a real homely feel as Andy lives on board most of the time – the ultimate staycation.

9

Now in full swing for the summer charter season, the next jobs on the works list scheduled this winter include replacing the flybridge teak decking with a new synthetic teak finish, upgrading the heads system, giving the hull a deep-clean and applying fresh antifoul.

Andy is fiercely proud of his Princess yacht and enjoys being part of the Princess family. When asked about his next ‘life chapter’, Andy replied, ‘I just want to keep making people laugh’.

SERVICE

DISCOVER 10

If you keep your yacht well maintained annually then a simple power wash and light scrape should suffice to remove the season’s growth and old antifoul.

Princess Motor Yacht Sales have dedicated teams of service engineers and technicians to help with engines, batteries, generators, coolants, oils, filters, water systems and bilges along with cleaning, storage and protection and much more.

Antifouling is key in annual maintenance as it protects your hull from the build-up of marine growth throughout the year. Thick layers of marine algae can affect your yacht’s performance, potentially decreasing speed efficiency by a few knots and resulting in increased fuel consumption over a period of time. Applying a special protective paint to the hull of your yacht helps minimise the growth of micro-organisms, especially if the yacht is kept in the water year-round and used frequently.

Find out more via the website www.princess.co.uk/aftercare/princess-servicing/ or call the Aftercare team on +44 (0)23 8110 3170 or email service@princess.co.uk.

Princess Motor Yacht Sales have facilities throughout the south coast of the UK, Puerto Banus in Spain and Mallorca in the Balearics.

Leon McGregor, Production Manager at the Saxon Wharf facility in Southampton says, ‘We often carry out antifouling as part of the planned annual maintenance and offer this service within our bespoke service plans. Most vessels benefit from a good scrub at the time of the boat lift, the hull and water line prepped and the recommended antifoul applied. However, after many seasons of boating some yachts require the layers to be scrapped back, the hull primed and new fresh coats of antifoul applied. Usually at this time of the annual lift we recommend all of the underwater running gear is descaled and the props burnished.

Depending on the size of your yacht, the process can take a few days to complete.

Winterising

Thorough maintenance and preparation can mean fewer problems later on. If you’d like to find out more about antifouling, winterising or year-round service packages then the dedicated Princess Yachts trained in-house team would be delighted to assist.

Following a fantastic season on the water, as Autumn approaches, preparing your yacht for the colder months comes to mind. Winterising will likely include an annual maintenance check and service to ensure the smooth running of your yacht and to minimise future issues.

The waterline is taped and then 2 coats of antifoul are hand-rollered onto the hull. There are different types of antifoul paint available depending on your yacht, usage and storage but they are all a special chemical combination of biocides and copper compounds designed to deter the growth of algae, marine matter and barnacles.

All lift platform mechanisms are cleaned and operations checked. Not forgetting the seacock service - all ball valves are accessed, operated and lubricated. Any valves that require replacements are reported and changed as needed. We try to do everything we can to check all aspects, take action and therefore prevent future issues occurring to enable a trouble-free season of boating for our Princess owners.’

I bought my first boat in 1992 – an 18-foot cathedral hull, fibreglass boat with a 35-horsepower engine and I’ve had many boats since then which have got progressively larger. I’ve got a new Princess 45 flybridge boat at the moment and I’ve also owned other Princesses, including a V52, which is probably my favourite boat of all of those I’ve owned! I keep my boats in Loch Lomond in Scotland.

I have owned lots of different brands of boat and what I particularly like about Princess is the level of attention to detail, which is incredible: the boats are very well built. You can be polishing the boat on a sunny day and you come across a component and it’s got the little Princess crown stamped in there – which shows you that it’s not just a generic component, but is really personalised and high quality. My F45 was the first one, made as a demo boat, and is one of the smaller ones in the range, but is still finished to a fabulous standard.

What’s your boating history?

Why did you choose Princess?

I keep the boat at Cameron House, which is a five-star hotel and is wonderful for hosting social events. There is an annual event called the Convoy Cruise during which the marina members are invited to take part in a cruise which covers the length of the loch and back again. When we reach one end, we have a barbeque at the hotel, and then when we come back again, we have a ball. Everyone is in fancy dress and it’s an absolute riot! I also recently hosted my friend’s 50th birthday on my yacht when it was brand new, which was so much fun. What are your cruising plans for the future?

Why did you select the Princess F45?

I chose the F45 because of how much I liked my previous Princess which was a V52. It was a fabulous sea boat – she had a 30-tonne weight and you could take her out in rough water and you would feel totally confident in the boat’s abilities. The new boat I have is a lot lighter with smaller engines, meaning that it is also much easier to manoeuvre and park in the marina, thanks also to her IPS pod drive.

What I particularly like about Princess is the level of attention to detail, which is incredible

I’m actually looking at buying a new Princess V55 at the moment. Once that is all settled, I’ll probably put her in the marina in Largs. The Princess V55 has a top speed of 37 knots and two powerful engines, so the sheer power and delivery are going to be absolutely phenomenal. When I’ve got my V55 in the sea, I plan to head to the north of Scotland, to the Caledonian Canal and then I’ll probably cruise down to the west coast of Ireland with her. I am really looking forward to it! Explore the Princess F45 online: www.princess.co.uk/boat/princess-f45

I have to say, my previous boat, the V52 had so much power, which I loved! It was just a little bit more demanding when you came into the dock to park it, but this wasn’t really much of an issue for me. What have been some of your recent yachting highlights?

1313

How has it performed? My new boat is much lighter on fuel and is very well balanced compared to my previous boats. It is also very well set up and the trim tabs are automatic – and there are IPS docking stations on the upper and lower helms. The boat is a dream and so easy to manoeuvre even in quite windy weather.

St Tropez, La Vague d’Or

As the youngest chef ever to achieve three Michelin Stars, French icon, Arnaud Donckele, has also now achieved three stars for his Plenitude restaurant in Paris. Needless to say, he knows exactly how to create food that leaves a lasting impression. Famed in particular for his sauces and for his instinctive approach to the “non-recipe” style of cooking, his restaurant at the delightfully decadent waterfront hotel, Cheval Blanc in St Tropez, is a great place to witness how thrilling the region’s ingredients can be when celebrated by somebody with the skill to show them at their best.

RIVIERASANDONSTARMICHELINMAGICTHEFRENCHITALIAN

In any context, it’s a superb place for food. But when you combine its unquenchable appetite for good living with its historical role as the birthplace of superyacht charter, you have the perfect recipe for some of the finest restaurant experiences anywhere in the world.

1414

The stretch of coastline that spans the French and Italian Rivieras, from St Tropez in the west to La Spezia in the east, is deservedly famous for the quality of its cuisine.

Along with its stunning scenery, crystal waters and buzzing towns, it’s no surprise it’s a favourite spot for chartering a yacht. Whether you favour the markets, cafes, bars or restaurants, it’s a region full of wonderful gastronomic treats. The area is famous for its lemons and lavender, for its truffles, shellfish and flatbreads. It’s also a place forever associated with classical herbs like rosemary, thyme, marjoram and oregano, as well as with rich homemade tapenade, packed with local olives, capers and anchovies.

Savona, Carletto Private Restaurant Here’s one that hasn’t actually made it onto the Michelin list yet – but if you treat yourself to a visit, you will quickly consider that a major oversight.

There’s enormous fun to be had, trawling the backstreets of the Cote d’Azur for charming little bistros that make rustic local dishes like fumy fish soup with spicy rouille. But if you want to ramp up the sophistication and immerse yourself in a truly stellar gastronomic experience, this iconic restaurant is as grand and self-consciously reverential as it gets. As a powerfully formal and fastidiously manicured kind of place, you would be unwise to turn up in a creased shirt. But with world-famous chefs, Dominique Lory and Alain Ducasse at the helm (not to mention the robust validation of three Michelin Stars), no gastronomic tour of the French Riviera would be complete without it. Menton, Mirazur Faintly less formal than Le Louis XV but every bit as formidable in terms of its reputation is three Michelin Star restaurant Mirazur in Menton. Situated virtually on the border between France and Italy, it presents a wonderfully distinctive dining experience. Presided over by ItalianArgentinian star of gastronomy, Mauro Colagreco, you can expect a unique union of South American and Mediterranean ingredients in dishes that look, feel and taste like a heartfelt celebration of the farmers and fishermen who made it all possible. In fact, so well received has Mirazur been that in 2019 (albeit briefly), it managed to knock Denmark’s Noma off top spot as ‘World’s best restaurant’.

Tucked away down forgetful lanes behind Antibes’ elegant Plage de la Gravette, ‘The Fig Tree of the Holy Spirit’ is a thrilling mouthpiece for the honest, frill-free guardianship of Christian Morisset and his two talented sons, Jordan and Matthias. Using fresh daily produce from the local market, Christian has become famous for dishes that bring together the best of the local farms, the local seas and the local producers. Whether it’s the catch of the day from the Antibes fishermen, ‘lacquered’ lamb with tapenade and sweet garlic or Lavender Crème Brulée, Le Figuier de Saint Esprit delivers a sensory experience you won’t quickly forget.

15

Having achieved a Michelin Star just a year after opening Ristorante Sarri, chef Andrea Sarri’s approach to fine dining remains delightfully infectious. As a key player in Italy’s contemporary food scene and a champion of young talent throughout Europe, he does a brilliant job of making high-end gastronomy accessible. Set among pastel beachfront houses in the fishing village of Prino, he uses a wide range of local fish, as well as seasonal produce from his family farm. And while his constantly evolving dishes are often playful, the dining atmosphere remains distinctly relaxed and homely.

Nice, JAN If you want first-class food with lashings of creativity in a setting that feels intimate and relaxing rather than formal, JAN in Nice is a wonderful treat. Located in a lively side street near the Port of Nice, this compact and unassuming little place is overseen by South African chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. Having honed his skills as a chef on the yachts of Monaco, he won a Michelin Star in 2016, just three years after opening his restaurant, and he has maintained his impeccable standards ever since.

Imperia, Ristorante Sarri

Antibes, Le Figuier de Saint Esprit

Monaco, Le Louis XV, lain Ducasse à l’Hôtel de Paris

Cannes, La Palme d’Or Cannes is a brilliant little town, with a lovely harbour, a fine beach and all kinds of memorable eating opportunities, from traditional markets to unassuming bistros serving local dishes at remarkably affordable prices. But on the town’s famous Boulevard de la Croisette at 5-star Hotel Martinez, La Palme d’Or delivers a particularly brilliant dining experience, courtesy of celebrated local chef, Christian Sinicropi. As the only two Michelin Star restaurant in the town, with an elegant terrace overlooking the bay, it is famous for its wine, for the technical sophistication of its tasting menu and for its passionate commitment to the Provençal terroir.

Blessed by reviews that eclipse more illustrious and betterrecognised restaurants in the region, its modern Italian seafood-driven menu is every bit as charming as its location, down a backstreet alley, just a stone’s throw from Savona’s harbour. It might not yet be one of the Italian Rivera’s celebrated Big Hitters but if you want world-class cooking without the pomp, this is a restaurant you need to see.

A second yacht in the YachtQuarters fractional ownership programme by Princess Motor Yacht Sales enables more owners to conveniently and cost-effectively share all the acquisition and operational costs of a yacht at a fraction of the price along with full yacht management services.

Princess 68 YACHTQUARTERS

My Princess spoke with James Swift, an owner of the exceptional Princess 68 to find out what drew him to the programme.

‘I love to spend quality time on board with my family and luckily the yacht is spacious enough to invite friends too.’

‘It’s the perfect yacht and ticks all of the boxes under 70ft and I’m not paying huge berthing fees which is great. The space is incredible with 4 generous cabins including an amazing owner’s cabin, a huge flybridge with entertaining and dining space, water toys and enough accommodation for 2 crew – a Captain and a Stewardess.’

‘Currently, I’m enjoying staying around the west Mediterranean as the Balearic Islands have so much to offer and there’s a huge amount to explore. I do have an appetite for going a little further afield in the future.’

5. Who do you have with you on board –family or friends?

‘I’d like to head to other areas of the west Mediterranean such as the French and Italian Rivieras’.

4. The Princess 68 is based in Mallorca –where do you cruise?

2. What made you choose a fractional ownership scheme? And why Princess?

1. What’s your boating history prior to joining the Princess YachtQuarters programme?

3. What do you think of the Princess 68?

‘I’d been looking at buying a larger, perhaps older yacht, but I wasn’t sure how to go about getting into yachting for the first time.’

‘The YachtQuarters programme offered the perfect solution - a unique kind of yacht ownership that is less financially demanding than buying outright to see if I like the idea of owning a yacht. The Princess brand gave me confidence that it would offer great service, and would make everything as easy as possible having the back-up of a concierge, team of experts and a yacht manager, and even crew. It gave me great peace of mind and a really tailor-made walk-on, walk-off yacht ownership experience.’

19

‘Absolutely. I’m currently talking to one of my friends about joining the programme as there is only one share remaining and it would be great to share some yachting holidays with them.’

6. Would you recommend YachtQuarters to other people?

7. What are your cruising plans for the future?

Set sail in a stunning Princess 68 for a fraction of the cost with YachtQuarters - with every aspect of running the boat taken care of. ‘I get to drive boats for a living and I’m based at home here in Plymouth! I enjoy being out on the water even though the winters are a bit tougher and the sea conditions can be challenging, it’s still worth it.’

‘In the summer I love watersports – paddle-boarding, windsurfing, diving and taking our little motor boat out for a spin, but I’d also love to try wing sail.’

What did you do career-wise before joining Princess Motor Yacht Sales?

What’s your favourite spot around the south west? ‘Well, we keep our Dory at Wembury and head out to the Mewstone which is lovely. We also enjoy North Sands in Salcombe and taking the campervan down to Cornwall for weekends – and the dog comes with us! We’re so lucky to have all of Devon and Cornwall on our doorstep.’

The Plymouth office and showroom, based in Turnchapel Wharf on the waterfront, is a former Royal Marines military installation steeped in naval history. The quaint village of Turnchapel on the beautiful Devon coastline is situated just across the water from the brand home of Princess Yachts’ head office, factory and shipyard. Princess Motor Yacht Sales

‘It has to be the Princess X95, she’s such a stunning yacht with incredible internal space. I was lucky enough to help the skipper on slot one when I was freelancing. We cruised the south coast of Devon up to Salcombe and as she is such a departure from the rest of the ranges, she turned heads! My other favourite is M/Y Talitha. I lived aboard for 2 years so she was my home and she has a great owner and crew. Being a 1929 yacht, she has some beautiful classic styling.’

‘We have some pretty awesome wildlife here in Plymouth Sound and I’ve spotted dolphins and tuna whilst out on sea trials. And I even saw a Porbeagle shark towards the Eddystone Lighthouse when I was out fishing.’

What do you do at Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Plymouth and how long have you worked there? ‘I’m a skipper, so I drive the Princess yachts during sea trials when we are testing them, checking systems and all elements of safety at sea. I also help prepare the paperwork following the sea trials, like a general auditor. I’ve also just started doing owner handovers including orientation, systems updates and general cruising guidance. I’m relatively new here, I joined last December.’

X95: On board the superyachtspace-agefromPrincess PRINCESS X95

Words by Kevin Koenig for Boat International

The 29.1-metre Princess X95 looks like no other Princess before her. Introduced via a digital launch in summer 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the X95 follows industry trends toward building boats in this size and class with a plumb bow, without quite going the full monty. Instead, the yacht has a wave piercer that extends her waterline and which also lines up with the peak of her bow deck.

The Princess X95 has a forward-thinking design and a layout that allows room for comfort and creativity says Kevin Koenig, who steps on board hull 14.

“A true plumb bow can generate quite a bit of spray,” says Andy Lawrence, Princess’s director of design. “We have a more relaxed angle [as the bow approaches the waterline]. It’s inverted and diverts the water more efficiently.”

On display at the Fort Lauderdale boat show and surrounded by her more conservatively drawn sisterships, the X95’s aggressive styling stands out.

Negative space in between the two is a function of design.

The look of the X95 is at once striking and unexpected, particularly for the comparatively staid British builder.

“This is a bit of a departure for us,” Lawrence says. “There is a different look and feel aesthetically going on here. It takes a while to accept that for some, but it feels like this is the way the market is going right now. These boat profiles are going to change because people want more living space. The design of this boat [done by Pininfarina and Olesinksi, in conjunction with Princess] was really about trying to maximise the amount of usable real estate, and floor space.”

23

There is a different look and feel goingaestheticallyonhere

What Princess has done here is effectively combine the best of both worlds.

The yacht also uses a notable amount of glass in her construction, which pays dividends when capturing the elusive goal of bringing the outside in. “There are 85 pieces of glass used on this boat,” he says. “They’re big pieces too, three metres long by 1.5 metres wide, so to physically manoeuvre it is a challenge from a manufacturing perspective, but we are used to dealing with it now. The factory has H-frame lifting rigs with suction cups to lift the glass up, and then beam cranes overhead to manoeuvre them around the factory floor. They’re simply too big to be manually handled. It’s a good bit of work of course but we think it is worth it, and by that, I mean for visibility. We want as few mullions as possible.”

24

From glancing at the X95, one could be forgiven for wondering if the entire superstructure is made of glass. It is not of course, but it does appear that way. Regardless, Lawrence explains that the structural integrity of the X95 is not up for debate. “The glass is very strong,” he says. “It’s subjected to the same load pressures as the rest of the hull, but the hull itself has structural reinforcements that support it whether the glass is there or not.”

Many thanks to Kevin Koenig and Boat International. Images courtesy of Princess Yachts. On board the space-age Princess X95 (boatinternational.com)

A feeling of enormity was important during this vessel’s design. “We really wanted to pack as much in as possible,” Lawrence says, yet “we didn’t want to crest that 24 metre (at load line) mark for various reasons. For example, you can make the boat 1.5 metres longer, but then you need more crew, and corresponding crew space, so you really end up with the same amount of boat. And if you go three metres bigger well, that’s a different size boat, isn’t it? Plus, by capping the boat at the length she is, we put a cap on the price. But with all the glass we use, and a beam that carries well forward, we think people will be impressed when they step aboard and see just how big she really is inside.”

What’s been done with that main deck on that boat is simply incredible

It’s a

Besides the space-age exterior aesthetic the glass affords the boat, there are of course other advantages. Natural light is abundant, and can be felt perhaps most keenly on the main deck. On the first 13 iterations of this hull, that space encompassed both the saloon and the de rigueur owner’s cabin on main deck. However, the owners of the 14th hull took a different tack, placing their cabin at amidships on the lower accommodations level. The galley is up and forward on the main deck, reflecting an American penchant for using the cooking space as an entertaining space as well. It’s a layout option Lawrence expects to become popular once it is photographed and publicised. “What’s been done with that main deck on that boat is simply incredible,” he says. “You can walk in the aft door and see 18 metres straight to the front, so it feels absolutely enormous.”

After all, Princess’s heritage in flybridge motor yachts goes way back to the original Princess 37 of the early 1970s.

26

And, having introduced its first V series boat in 1994, the V Class also has a history spanning nearly three decades. So when the S Class made its debut in the form of the S72, it came as little surprise that its capacity to provide a more stylish and dynamic form of sportbridge motor yacht entertainment was immediately recognised in the ‘Over 55ft’ category at the 2015 Motor Boat Awards.

Today, the redefined S72 has come back into production as an all-new member of the S Class fleet of low-profile sports yachts that also includes the Princess S66 and the Princess S62 – and they each adopt that same winning approach. They use moderately sized fly decks that are set relatively deep and positioned a good way aft to help drop the weight, minimise the elevation, streamline the style and introduce extra light into the lower saloon. They also use lightweight deep-V hulls with similar power options to those of the V Class, enabling agile handling and speeds approaching 40 knots. On the main deck, the use of aft galleys and large cockpits with integrated garages and extended sun pads makes them ideal for watersports and outdoor dining. And yet they are still known for providing lower deck facilities broadly commensurate with those of full-volume motor cruisers.

PRINCESSSCLASS

Having joined the Princess fleet in 2014, the S Class might seem like quite a recent innovation.

But as the yacht that was designed to operate in the space between the slick, high-performance V Class and the spacious, party-ready F Class, the modern S Class is actually the result of generations of applied boat building expertise.

27

And there are other reasons to get excited about the S72’s deck layout. It uses a fore-and-aft (rather than transverse) aft crew cabin to help free up the space for a 3.9-metre tender - but the rest of the lower deck uses the same layout as the elegant Princess Y72. That includes four brightly lit cabins, three of them ensuite, plus a full-beam owner’s stateroom with its own private lobby.

28

LowerMainFlybridgeDeckDeck

While it shares the same aft galley concept and sociable forward saloon as the other boats in the fleet, it is actually the smallest of the S Class yachts to feature a private owner’s staircase.

Back up on the main deck, some intelligent adjustability in the foredeck furniture enables you to create extra aft-facing seats. And on the sportbridge, the Princess S72 allocates the entire port side to a pair of C-shaped seating zones – one that converts into a sunbed alongside the starboard helm; and another larger one, adjacent to the big aft wetbar, that is tailor made for dinner parties.

The S72 remains a lynchpin of the Princess S Class.

S72

Discover the full Princess S Class range of sports yachts online at: www.princess.co.uk/class/s-class-yachts/

While not quite as long, nor as beamy as the full-volume F62, this smallest of the four S Class boats does a superb job of combining its six-berth accommodation with stylish low-profile looks, a range of internal and external day spaces and imposing 38-knot performance.

The sportbridge makes great use of its relatively modest fore and aft dimensions, with a C-shaped seating unit opposite the two-man helm and a transverse aft bench and wet bar. And on the main deck, the saloon is set over two levels to help maximise both the light and the headroom.

The upper section of the saloon uses a generous port lounge to keep the Skipper involved in the party and the lower section features a large wraparound galley for easy integration with the external cockpit’s dining station. And yet in spite of its impressive day boating credentials, the S62 still provides a cruise-friendly three-cabin layout, comprising a crew cabin beneath the enormous cockpit sunpad, plus a full-beam ensuite master cabin amidships, a starboard twin, a forward guest double and a dual-access day heads to port.

Launched in 2019, the S66 is an impressive upgrade on the acclaimed S65. As you might expect, aside from a slick reworking of the cockpit to free up the space for a starboard stairway, the S66 uses the same main and lower deck layouts as the dynamic new V65. Better still, it provides a similar level of performance to the V Class boat, with twin MAN V12-1400 diesels putting a top end of 38 knots well within reach. On the lower deck, the extra volume it enjoys over the smaller S62 is well used for the inclusion of a transverse owner’s bathroom. That frees up the space on the portside for an extra bunk cabin, increasing the sleeping capacity to eight. The S66 also provides the option of a crew cabin aft, while still retaining the space for a 3.3-metre RIB in the tender garage. It also features the classical S Class aft galley, with sliding doors and a fully opening electric window, creating an alfresco bar that straddles the zone between internal saloon and external cockpit. And in addition to the dining and lounging zones of the sportbridge, the aft cockpit and the convivial saloon, there’s a prodigious socialising zone on the foredeck with space for the entire ship’s company.

DOING IBIZA EXPLORE

When asked to imagine a summer holiday in Ibiza, in all likelihood it is the nightlife that immediately springs to mind.

Legendary clubs such as Amnesia, Pacha, Eden Ibiza and DC10 offer world-famous night time entertainment, with many of the biggest names in music from Markus Schulz to Lady Gaga having graced the stages with their presence in recent years. That said, there is another side to the Spanish archipelago which makes it something of a hidden gem for both budding and highly experienced boat owners.

These feature open cockpits, which means that your living area is almost ‘alfresco’ in style. You can walk straight from the dining/living area out into the open, and it is only a couple of steps down to the bathing platform, where you can jump straight into the water. This creates a nice flow of movement through the boat, and a strong connection to the sea.’

3. You can’t leave Ibiza without visiting her little sister island, Formentera, which really is gorgeous. Here, I would recommend spending time relaxing in one of her shallow anchorages and then heading ashore to enjoy a paella in one of the famous beach clubs and soak up the wonderful atmosphere with a cold glass of wine.

39

He continues: ‘In addition, we also offer larger Princess yachts which are ideal for families looking to enjoy being out on the water for days on end. They can cruise around the island, then drop anchor in one of the beautiful calas (bays) here. There is so much to do for owners in the area – whether that’s water sports or cliff diving. You certainly won’t be bored!’

As Gordon explains: ‘People who come to Ibiza are often surprised about the other face of the island – the nature is so beautiful. They imagine it’s just nightlife and jet-setting, but it is so much more than that. There is so much tranquility to be found and a really laid-back atmosphere, which can help even the most stressed-out person to relax.’

Top-notch service

Another calming element about paying a visit to Princess’s facility in Ibiza is the quality of service on offer. ‘Our clients love us.’ says Gordon. ‘We have a fantastic mechanical engineer (Patrick) based on the island who is really good and thorough.

Princess spoke to Gordon van Wijk who is heading up the recently-opened Princess Yachts office in Ibiza, Marina Botafoch, to discover more about the slightly quieter side of this stunningly beautiful Balearic Island.

1. Kick off your trip by sailing to Cala d'Hort to see Es Vedrà, the famous mystical rock. This monolithic limestone rock formation stands at over 400 metres in height and is the source of many island myths and legends (including UFO sightings!)

It’s just what the island needs: good, serious, knowledgeable craftsmen to support yacht owners on the island – and this will continue to grow as the yachting infrastructure develops.’

If you aim to visit during the less busy times of year – namely May, June, September and October, rather than the full-on period of mid-summer – you can truly make the most of Ibiza’s famously beautiful beaches and azure waters.

Getting close to the water

2. Head over to Atlantis, which is just 500 metres from here. Although it is called ‘Atlantis’ by visitors, its real name is Sa Pedrera de Cala d'Hort and it functioned formerly as a sandstone quarry. The cuts in the stone caused by the quarrying resulted in asymmetric walls and deep gaps that have become natural pools filled with seawater. These are stunningly beautiful and have to be seen to be believed.

My Princess caught up with James Kirwan, Group Manager with BJ Marine, Princess’ dealer partner based in Greystones near Dublin, to discover what this hidden gem of yachting has to offer.

Although BJ Marine boasts a boat-selling history spanning 40 years, it only joined the Princess family as a dealer this year. James explains why this is the opportune moment for the two brands to come together. ‘As the average size of boats in operation in Ireland has continued to grow, 2022 was the perfect time to start as a Princess dealer on the ground. This means that we are well placed to meet this burgeoning demand, as ever more people realise how fantastic the cruising is around here.’

As for how this translates into suitable Princess models, these are correspondingly diverse. ‘The Princess V40 and V50 are very popular and have really grabbed people’s attention. Many of our clients are people who have enjoyed owning sports cruisers around 32-35 feet and are now looking to move up in size.’

He continues, ‘Because of our distinctive climate in Ireland, the flybridges tend to be very popular, so anything from the 45 up to the 62 in flybridges is what people want to talk to us about, and that is what you see around marinas the whole way around the coast.’

40

EXPLORING

As a country, Ireland is famous around the world for its generous and warm hospitality. With this open-minded approach found in its nightlife, live music, folk culture and dining, it is no less true for those looking to discover or explore the Emerald Isle via boat.

Diverse clients Indeed, working with BJ Marine, Princess is able to cater to a truly broad range of clients in Ireland, as James highlights. ‘If you had asked us about our clients five years ago, we would have had a pretty rigid template, but now we really have all kinds! It could be young families looking to get out on the water, day boaters searching for that exciting short-term experience or retired people in their 80s who are looking for ease and reliability.’

In particular, during the summer months, there is a constant stream of concerts and nightlife on the go for you to enjoy, but it is fantastic at any time of year.

3. Head down south to West Cork, which is part of the rugged and magical Wild Atlantic Way. Cruising down to a village like Kinsale on the southern coast will entail a 160-170 nautical mile run, but it is worth every mile. Once you are down there, you can enjoy the best food, restaurants and hospitality in the whole country. And, if the weather is good, I do not believe there is more stunning scenery to be found anywhere else in Europe.

James’ Irish itinerary

Should an owner be unfortunate enough to encounter any hiccups, BJ Marine also has the service element totally covered. James explains, ‘We have our own boatyard on-site in Greystones. We have a full range of contractors, including Volvo, Raymarine, Garmin and many more – so if someone arrives with an issue we can’t solve ourselves, we have the numbers in our phones of people who can! We always try and get people back on the water boating as quickly as possible.’
