a bou t display display is the official magazine for High Point University's School of Art & Design. High Point University promotes an extraordinary persona for its students, and they have become confined by the school's ideals and influenced by it's opulent surroundings. As artists we tend to be placed in the background, but we were born to stand out. With the drive to be different, we are breaking boundaries, testing limits, and making a mess. This publication is to make our mark as artists and designers and ‘display’ student’s work that expresses their true creativity. It also includes insight on the department as well as clubs events, and design trends.

display br a n d The brand of display is simple yet timeless. Our team decided to create a personality that allows an unlimited amount of expression starting with our custom made logotype.

Following the magazine's logo, we wanted to incorporate the purpose behind the publication, which is the school. For this logo we decided for every issue the colors would change, to represent the ever changing style of art.

Lets talk typography. After diligent investigation we chose two strong and complementary typefaces.

Below is the final sketch of our logo. The logo is custom to display, that is based of the typeface Essonnes. We love the classic vibe of the serif font, but wanted a thinker line create a bold effect.

l ayou t For any layout it is imperative to have a grid. So we created a square grid with 1/2 inch margins. This will help us lay our text and images.

Student Display Interveiw by Mara Wagner

mara wagner: How did you decide you were going to major in Studio Art? becca sands: Ever since I was little I had loved art and creating art. I joined that with my passion for teaching and helping others to decide that I wanted to be an art teacher. This brought me to becoming an art major at HPU.

Becca

mw: You’re very involved on campus, from your sorority, and other clubs, how do you juggle all of this while being a full time student? bs: Time management is very important. I try to plan out my day in my planner to assure that I have enough time to get everything done. At the end of the day school work is most important.

mw: Did you have a plan at the beginning of your college career? Has it changed or has it pretty much stayed the same? bs: Yes, my plan has stayed the same mostly! I came in as an art major and education minor, I have stuck with that and added museum studies.

mw: What job do you want to have from graduating from High Point University? bs: I would like to be a high school art teacher. I plan on getting my masters in art education or possibly ceramics.

mw: Out of our faculty and staff who would you call a mentor? bs: My mentor is 100% Mark Brown. He is my advisor, I am his assistant in the art department and I will be taking three classes with him next semester. He teaches me something new every time I talk to him.

mw: What projects have you completed that make you feel the most proud? bs: I am most proud of my work on the wheel. Ceramics was new to me this time last year but now I couldn’t imagine my life without it.

Sands mw: Do you feel a responsibility to contribute to something bigger than yourself? bs: Yes absolutely! This is why I want to be a teacher. I believe that one person can make a huge difference in someone’s life. If there is any chance that I could make a difference in someone’s life, and make their life better, I want to be able to do that.

mw: How do you get “unstuck” creatively?

bs: I try to make something, even if it is bad and eventually an idea comes. Many times I will put a ball of clay on the wheel not knowing what will be made with it. Something is created, just not planned. I think it is better to create something than to create nothing. I love a good brainstorm of ideas. I try to sketch a lot, everything I think of. There are bad ideas of course but something great could branch off of a not so good idea.
