News from the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team

A busy and a tough Bank Holiday weekend

As it turned out, the next day, Paul Robinson (known as Robbo) also fell from Striding Edge, sustaining very serious injuries. His evacuation was again complicated by the poor weather and the Team worked quickly to evacuate him as his condition

deteriorated. A doctor and paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance met the team at Red Tarn and at this point Robbo received further advanced care. With his condition now very serious, the Coastguard helicopter was requested to leave Base and fly under the cloud to a suitable landing site by Red Tarn. He was in the Newcastle major trauma centre within the next 30 minutes . At the time of writing this, a month after the event, Robbo remains in hospital. However, this week he was reunited with his dog, Rossi, which also fell from the ridge. Rossi spent the last month with Helen at Oakhill Vets in Windermere who was also the first team member on scene and initially provided advanced first aid to Robbo before taking over the care of Rossi. Robbo should be coming back to the area soon as he’s a retired

Captain Craig Sweeney, Chief Pilot, HMCG Prestwick sent the Team this message following the rescue:

I have been conducting SAR operations for many years now but this last weekend will stay with me for a long time. It made me exceptionally proud to be part of the rescue effort. I feel very proud to live in a United Kingdom that allows any individual at any time of the day or night to dial 999 and ask for help. Then, irrespective of why they need it, help is provided. The fact that mountain rescue teams do this voluntarily demonstrates the very best human traits possible.

firefighter and he will be coming to the fire service rehabilitation service in Eamont Bridge. We’re sure we’ll see him then! Robbo’s friends have been amazing since the incident. Not only have they set about supporting Robbo’s family but they are raising funds for the Team and have already organised a charity car wash, curry night and have a major sponsored bike ride and walk very soon (21st October). We’re hoping to use these funds to buy new Smart screens for our new control room, training room, major incident room and kitchen (see page 2).

August Bank Holiday weekend was a busy and a tough one for the Team. Sadly, while walking with his young family on the Saturday, a man fell from Striding Edge and sustained fatal injuries. This was a very tragic and sad rescue for all concerned and our thoughts are with his family and friends. It’s always difficult in these circumstances but, as a Team, we have to keep an eye on each other and how we’re coping while also being ready for the next rescue.

Andy Jackson was involved on the day and is now fundraising:

Robbo, his wife Alex and Tracy and I who were with him on the mountain cannot thank you enough. The mountain rescue volunteers, coastguard pilots and air ambulance medics showed tremendous professionalism in saving Robbo’s life. There is no doubt in our minds that the outcome would have been very different had they not reached us.We will always be grateful and Robbo is desperate to visit in person and thank you himself. Raising funds which will help you help others is the least we can do.
