Welcome to the latest edition of The Crest!

As I write my comments for this edition, I am still in a state of awe after recently seeing the final performance of the production of Aladdin Junior. With almost 80 staff and students involved, the production was a labour of love resulting in a spellbinding show of the highest quality. From the elaborate entry complete with acrobats and fortune tellers, to custom built sets including a ‘magic’ carpet, our students had the perfect platform to showcase their talents.

Supported by an unbelievable backstage crew, and the technical wizardry of former student, and now Auditorium Manager, Mitch Byrne and his team, students excelled in singing, dancing, and acting, producing a kaleidoscope of colour and flair to rival a big budget West End show.

Playing to full houses across the week, Director Emma Leadon and her fabulous cast and crew did an exceptional job in bringing the story of Aladdin and the city of Agrabah to life. We look forward to the next big production in 2024, with planning already underway!

The Commissioning of Chaplain Jean-Pierre Schroeder

In February I was delighted to formally congratulate Reverend Jean-Pierre Schroeder on his commissioning as Senior Chaplain at an event in the Allan Shaw Centre. The commissioning was presided over by The Right Reverend Kate Wilmot, Assistant Bishop of Perth. We also welcomed special guests The Venerable Tony Drayton, Archdeacon of Perth and The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, Chief Executive Officer of the Anglican Schools Commission. Students from Year 5 through to Year 12 were also in attendance.

THE CREST, AUGUST 2023

Reverend Jean-Pierre commenced as our Senior Chaplain in July 2021, having faithfully served our community as Chaplain since April 2017. In the normal course of events, the School’s Senior Chaplain would be officially commissioned no more than a few months following their initial appointment. However, due to the timing of his appointment, challenges with Covid restrictions and several other factors, the commissioning of Reverend Jean-Pierre as Senior Chaplain was unfortunately delayed.

The official commissioning of Reverend Jean-Pierre Schroeder as Senior Chaplain is a significant moment in the life of our school. It is a chance to formalise and congratulate Reverend Jean-Pierre on the important work he is already doing in our school community. From supporting, and promoting Christian Faith within the School, and providing pastoral support to students, staff, and parents, through to leading Chapel services, and teaching classes of Christianity, Religion and Life in the Secondary School, Reverend Jean-Pierre is a busy and hard working member of our school community. We look forward to many more years of love and support from Reverend Jean-Pierre.

Outstanding Sports Results

I am pleased to recognise and commend the exceptional achievements of our talented athletes in recent cross country running and interschool swimming events. Our dedicated students have showcased their remarkable skills, determination, and sportsmanship, making us incredibly proud. At the ACC ‘B’ Division Swimming Carnival in March, PMACS came within 10 points of winning the overall competition and promotion to ‘A’ Division. This is a tremendous achievement, our best ever result, with the narrow margin sure to provide motivation for our team in 2024. Promotion to ‘A’ Division swimming would make us one of the very few teams to have both ‘A’ Division swimming and athletics teams!

In cross country running, our Primary and Secondary School students have achieved terrific results over the past term. The Primary Team won the NIPSSA Carnival, coming from behind to secure enough points in the last event to win the overall competition. While in Secondary School, we claimed the Girls Shield at the ACC Carnival, the first time in our history! In a tightly contested competition involving over 80 schools, we also finished 5th in the Boys Shield and 3rd overall. This is a tremendous effort, especially as we compete against schools twice our size!

Year 12 Events

As our Year 12’s head to towards the final term of their secondary education, they have recently participated in the first two of their farewell events. On Monday 12 June, Year 12 Students and their Tutors met at Quinns Beach for a sunrise service. The weather fortunately held for brief reflective session that was followed by muffins and hot chocolate. This is the second iteration of the event and one enjoyed by all. The Head of Year, Parish Priest and Principal all said a few words; however the focus of the event was a chance for students to reconnect after Semester One exams and reset for their last few weeks of school. More recently, Year 12’s participated in a tree planting ceremony, with each house planting a tree on the edge of the North Oval. This is the 17th year that the Year 12 cohort has participated in a tree planting ceremony, an event that provides departing students a tangible and practical way to leave their mark on our school.

2022 WACE Results

Results for our 2022 Leavers were released in December with some pleasing results. Most importantly, over 58% of the ATAR cohort of 48 gained an ATAR ranking of 80 or more, with one third of the group gaining an ATAR of 85 or above. The 2022 cohort also recorded the School’s highest ever Median ATAR of 82.65.

Each year the School recognises those students who have achieved an ATAR of 95 or higher. Students who achieve this mark have their name immortalised on the ‘95 Club Honour Board’ in the Doug Swingler Building. In 2022, the following three students met this benchmark:

·Ryan Gilling

·Jason Jakovcevic

·Bobby Yang

The School has again been recognised for having high performing courses. To be named as such a course, it must have a percentage of students with the combined score in the top 15% of all students in that course. I am pleased to report that Physical Education Studies and Applied Information Technology both met this benchmark.

Future Directions

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey (Class of 2013) who has recently stepped down as Chair of the Alumni Committee. Jorjah-Kourtney has held the role for two years after several years as a committee member, making a wonderful contribution to the School and we wish her well for her future endeavours. I am delighted to announce that Rebekah Birch (Class of 2013) has agreed to take on the role of Chair as we continue to grow our Alumni Association. We are always looking for more Alumni to join our committee and I encourage you to contact the School if this is of interest to you.

As always, we love to hear stories of Alumni success and I encourage you to reach out to us with your exciting news. You can send news and photos to alumni@pmacs.wa.edu.au anytime!

In concluding, I hope you enjoy reading the latest edition of The Crest and I encourage you to stay in touch with the School as we go from strength to strength.

Every Blessing.

Jenna-Lee De Swardt - Class of 2014

So often in life we go the full circle. Off we wander this way or that, even for years, but one way or another we often find ourselves coming back to where we started from, or somewhere symbolically similar. Mine is Peter Moyes. A place I once spent time with my classmates and teachers, who I now call my colleagues; and the classrooms I once attended as a student, now teaching in my own class.

When I left school, I delved down the avenue of becoming an Occupational Therapist, aiming to eventually work within the paediatric industry. Although it was appealing and was very interesting, I was missing the aspect of fun and excitement within my role. After taking a break to reassess and explore other interests, I went back to university to study my bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education, with a focus on Child Diversity and STEM.

Through becoming an Early Childhood teacher, I spend my days being my animated, enthusiastic self in my role whilst changing the lives of little people. It is an avenue I never expected coming down, however I have found it the best fit and occupation for me. Coming back to Peter Moyes has given me the opportunity to teach within a school I feel comfortable in to express my own teaching style and make learning enjoyable for my children each day.

I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve

I have learnt so much not only about children and myself, but also gained a large amount of respect for my own teachers at school. I aim to continue and grow within the education department over the coming years and am open to where it may take me!

Since the beginning of the year, the Allan Shaw Centre Auditorium has been staffed full-time by two Peter Moyes Alumni. After many years of working as a technician, both in the Auditorium and as a freelancer, I have recently taken on the position of Allan Shaw Centre Manager.

In February, I was joined by another ex-student, Nicole Wright, who stepped up to fill the now vacant technician role.

Both Nicole and I share a passion for live event production that began at PMACS and has only grown over the years.

We have made it our mission to develop the same passion in our Backstage Academy students today.

During the combined 15 years we have spent working in the Allan Shaw Centre, Nicole and I have shared many fond memories while collaborating on a variety of shows and events, starting with our first show together, "Fame," in 2016.

Maddison Parker - Class of 2021

For all who don’t know me, my name is Maddison Parker. Ever since I was the age of 5 my passion has been to dance. Growing up I dreamed of one day dancing on cruise ships and hopefully opening my own dance studio. I never thought of myself as a choreographer until I was given the opportunity by Emma Leadon to come back and share what I’m so passionate about. At the beginning of the year, 2022, I was given the opportunity to return to Peter Moyes Anglican Community School to teach dance.

For the past year and a half, I have been teaching the junior troupe which includes years 46. Over this time, students in the junior troupe have learnt many dance styles including lyrical, contemporary and jazz.

Many of these students are also participating in the school’s production Aladdin.

As well as teaching the junior troupe I was also given the opportunity to work with the students participating in the bootcamp; this bootcamp is an amazing way for students who are passionate about dance to work on their technique.

To work with the year 7’s for their performance morning and the year 2’s and 6’s for their performance for the sound of musicals was a completely different experience for me as I had to create something easy from a non-dancer perspective. This I found very challenging as I had only ever worked and choreographed for dancers, however seeing the students light up on stage reminded me of why I dance and why I choose to share my passion of dance. My goal moving forward is to keep sharing my love and passion of dance through creating and choreographing. I am a student at ECU Mount Lawley, studying to hopefully one day become a dance teacher. This whole experience has been amazing and the most rewarding. There’s been some challenges, but I feel that I have grown from this experience as a choreographer and a dancer.

Alumni Achievements and Good News

Nothing Special! Cannes World Film Festival - WINNER!

The experience of writing and directing "Nothing Special" was an experience I will never forget. With the help of an awesome cast and crew, including fellow PMACS Alumni Jacob Miles (lead actor, "Jack") and Caylem Weeks (colour grade/VFX artist), we created a story that people the world over have found enjoyment, relatability and emotional resonance in.

Originally wanting to just make a decent film that ticked some boxes for my final University assignment, the project slowly evolved in scope as we brought in outside talent in both a cast and crew context, and realised that in order to create something truly special, we'd need to have high ambitions and aim to be more than just "a student project". The team believed in me and the processes and strategies I employed, and I am so grateful that they did.

The writing and development process was creatively gratifying as we honed in the story beats, spent countless days storyboarding, and worked out contracts/logistics in regards to actually making a Super-Hero film in WA on a very very limited budget. We settled on the small town of Pingelly to shoot in, and the town and locals were so welcoming when we arrived on-location.

I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve
THE CREST, AUGUST 2023

The filming was the easy part; the team were great and Jacob especially brought his agame with his performance. When set backs occurred we pushed through and took everything with a smile on our face. The days were long, often bordering on 12 hours, but that time flew by as we all loved what we were doing, and before we knew it we were laughing and cheering on the balcony of the Pingelly Hotel, celebrating the end of the final day of filming.

The editing and overall postproduction process was where the bulk of the work was put in. Having a relative mountain of footage to comb through (shoutout to another PMACS Alumni Joshua Bramley and his IT company BIT Perfect for helping with data storage and backup solutions) and cut together was a lot easier said than done, but myself and our editor worked long days/nights to make sure that what we were presenting was the best version of the story we wanted to tell.

It was in this post production process that the expertise and experience of Caylem Weeks shined through as he utilised his skills in colour grading and VFX that - when combined with the incredible work from our lead audio engineer/music composer - really gave the film it's soul.

Being the Director, I had creative oversight on all of these aspects, and guided the team towards that vision we had all been working towards, but I would be lying if I said it didn't take a village. Without the entire team's passion and drive towards their own individual contributions to the project, we wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as we have been. To date, the film has been showcased at numerous international Film Festivals, including wins in the Indo French International Film Festival, award nominees at the Cannes Shorts and Cannes World Film Festivals, and official selections, semi-finalist positions, and honourable mentions at places such as Athens, Los Angeles Film Awards, Hollywood Boulevard Film Festival, and of course our own small town, Perth, at the WA Made Film Festival.

I B

I am so overwhelmed with joy at how far this project has come, and eagerly await the results of further Festivals we are in the process of being selected for, as well as what comes next for myself and the other lead creatives on this project. "Nothing Special" still has more to come, so stick around and see where we're heading...

Jamie recently dropped into PMACS and caught up with some of the staff in the music department. Jamie has recently spent the winter snow season over in Japan performing and bartending. After his visit to PMACS he was planning on heading off again this time to Greece where he had some music gigs set up in various Hotel Bars. It is wonderful to see Jamie's music is taking him around the world!
