Welcome to the latest edition of The Crest!
From The Principal At the conclusion of another busy year at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, it is my privilege to provide a brief report for the Alumni Association on some of the year’s highlights and developments. As I reflect on the year that has past, I often ask myself, “Where has the year gone?” An understanding of why time seems to fly by so quickly becomes apparent when we consider the various activities that have taken place over the School year. There have been numerous camps, CAS sporting teams, multiple carnivals, excursions, incursions, student leadership programs, fundraising for charity, co-curricular activities, House singing, Peter Moyes Week including an Olympiad Event, our inaugural whole school Guard of Honour for our departing Year 12 cohort, interschool competitions, and of course multiple events to showcase performance abilities, including the hugely successful production of We Will Rock You. On top of all these opportunities outside of the classroom, students have also undertaken a diverse and dynamic class-based curriculum. In this domain our students have continued to excel as evidenced by NAPLAN data which shows that students at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School are, on average, performing better than their state and national counterparts. While our primary focus at PMACS remains the delivery of a diverse and varied curriculum, we also strive daily to develop within our students the capacity for compassion, and acceptance and understanding of their obligations as active citizens in our local, national, and global communities. This is a noble goal which I believe we continue to achieve. Secondary School Model The School Council in conjunction with the Principal and Executive Team review the operations of the School on an annual basis. Over the past 12 months, there has been a particular focus on the existing Middle School and Senior School structures and how they fit within a PK-12 School. In recent years there has been a gradual shift away from a Middle Schooling model at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School. The decision has now been made to transition towards a Secondary School model in time for the commencement of the 2022 School year. This decision is based on the objectives outlined in our 2020-2024 Strategic Plan and feedback received from students, parents, and staff. What does this effectively mean? Year 7 will be maintained as a transition year and many features of the existing Middle Schooling approach will continue. This includes our extensive pastoral care programme, modified approaches to curriculum delivery and our orientation, camp, and induction programmes. Other key elements that will also remain in place include keeping Year 7 classrooms in their current location, the provision of separate play areas, and consistent class groupings for all subjects. In essence, not much will change for Year 7 students. For students in Year 8 to 12, general classroom areas will become Department based rather than year level. For example, the current Year 8 area will become the Mathematics Department with all Year 8 to 12 mathematics classes to take place in these classrooms. A key advantage of this model

is that teachers will have their own classroom, with students moving between lessons. This will have benefits for student concentration as they have a quick refresh and stretch between classes. This movement is already in place for specialist classes, with students moving to dedicated classrooms. The change for 2022 will see students in Year 8 to 12 move classrooms for each lesson, including MESH classes. The final transition to a Secondary School model is a continuation of changes that have been successfully implemented over the past few years. In particular, teachers have increased their teaching load within their specialist subject area across Years 7 to 12. This has a great benefit for students as teachers are delivering lessons aligned with their major field of study and expertise. In addition, there has been a more cohesive Pastoral Care approach in the secondary years, with Heads of Year and House Tutors continuing with the same cohort of students from Year 7 through to Year 12. While the move to a Secondary School model is a shift away from the traditional structures of the School, I am confident that these changes will enhance the delivery of pastoral care and curriculum across the Secondary School and will greatly benefit our students. Twilight Markets and Tour The annual Art Exhibition and Twilight Markets were held on Friday 12 November. The event continues to grow annually with an increase in the number of stalls and food vendors again this year. We were blessed with favourable weather conditions for the event, with visitors treated to some outstanding musical performances and artwork of the highest standard. One very successful aspect of the evening was our School tour for prospective parents. A total of 30 families booked in for our Twilight Tour, with an additional 20 families showing up on the night. As always, our student guides did a wonderful job and were well supported by members of the Executive Team. At the end of the tour, the Parish of Quinns-Butler provided refreshments which were very much appreciated. The Art Exhibition and Twilight Markets highlight for me what our school is all about: Community! With student participation from across the School, market stalls run by Alumni, parents and the broader community, food vendors coordinated by the Parents and Friends Association and the support of the Local Parish, this truly was a wonderful community event. Work is already underway on planning the 2022 iteration and we look forward to this event going from strength to strength. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of the Alumni Association in coordinating and promoting opportunities for past students to engage with each other and the School Community. I particularly acknowledge the leadership of Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey, Ash Keegan, Rebekah Birch, Corey Dullard and Leighton Henley and their efforts in continuing to grow the Association. They have been ably supported by Mrs Sue Webb and Mrs Belinda Lockyer from the PMACS Admin Team and I a very grateful for their continued efforts. I encourage all Alumni to support the great work of the Committee by attending the various events next year and engaging with the School through social media. In concluding, I wish all of our Alumni a relaxing and enjoyable festive season and I look forward to meeting and engaging with you in 2022 at our wide range of school events.

Well, 2021 is almost over and out. This has been an exciting year for most! We have all seen the results of last year’s personal growth on a larger and more public scale as we have been able to revisit socialising and attending large-scale assemblies, meetings, ceremonies, and functions in person again. The end of the year is always a great time to reflect on our achievements in the last twelve months - and it has been a blessing to return to some normalcy this year after last year pausing or cancelling so many social and working norms, and changing our relationships between work, home, family, and friendships. Congratulations to everybody who has put the lessons and new strengths found when working from home, or studying through lockdown, or being full time stay-athome parents, etc. into action this year. 2020 definitely put a new spin on the way we think, for example how grateful we now are for simple things such as catching up with friends for coffee by the sea or going for meals or cocktails in our city of an evening. We had a couple of lockdowns at the beginning of the year and have ended this year on a high note - looking forward to open travel and having more musicals and concerts and performances resume after the holidays. 2021 has reminded us to keep gratitude at the forefront of our daily attitudes, and whether you’ve noticed it in yourself or in peers and family/friends, I think it’s safe to say that there’s been a lot more giving throughout our community this year, something that I personally think will continue as we all remain thankful amongst the chaos occurring in other cities and places. It has been wonderful for The Committee to be able to host events again this year, as well as to see and hear of lots of Alumni attending events held by The School. This year has seen the We Will Rock You production, Snapshot Youth Theatre’s performances, the 20th Anniversary PMACS Gala, both the 2010 and 2011 cohorts’ ten-year reunion, an Alumni Sundowner and ended with Christmas markets where stallholders from the P&C and the Alumni’s small businesses get to showcase their locally-run businesses and products for sale. This year has seen more Alumni students getting married, more Alumni babies being born, more local and small businesses growing, and we can’t wait to continue watching the milestones and incredible achievements to come for members of PMACS Alumni in 2022 and beyond. Please remember to give yourself a pat on the back for all you have done this year, for yourself and the community - and stay safe this Christmas break. Alumni Sundowner The Alumni Committee hosted PMACS inaugural ‘Alumni Weekend’ on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 October. The Sundowner on the 15 October took place in the School’s staff room and started with a tour of the School. Whilst small in number of attendees, it was wonderful to hear the alumni reminisce about their favourite teachers, their friends and special memories of PMACS. It was also great to hear about what everyone had been doing since leaving School. There was even a surprise visit from Ivan McLean, past Associate Principal of Senior School!

Alumni 10 Year Reunions The yearly reunions took place at the Indian Ocean Brewery, Mindarie Marina on Saturday 16 October. This was a joint 10-year reunion for the graduating classes of 2010 and 2011. It was a fantastic opportunity to catch up in a relaxed setting.
We hope that the ‘Alumni Weekend’ is a new tradition for PMACS and will be looking forward to 2022 being even more successful. Alumni who graduated in 2012 start thinking of ideas for your reunion! Rebekah and Jorja-Kourtney chatted with the Year 11 and 12’s about the Alumni Association. They encouraged all to join when they leave School. It is an opportunity to stay in touch with peers and teachers and to remain a part of the PMACS community.
The Alumni Committee hosted a farewell Barbeque for the current Year 12 cohort. It was great to see past students return for this event and we appreciate the PMACS staff who are also PMACS Alumni joining the event. We hope that is also the start of a new Alumni tradition!

Every year PMACS hold their Whole School annual Art Exhibition and Twilight Christmas Markets. Stalls for the market are open to alumni, families, and friends of PMACS. For the past two years we have had alumni with market stalls.

I’ve enjoyed running my own business since 2015. • What’s one perk about owning your own business?
Having flexible hours around my daughter’s schedule has been the biggest perk of running my own business. Being able to just check off a date in my booking system means I can attend all important events - a happy family/work life balance. •
Could you share one piece of advice for someone wanting to turn their hobby into a small business? My advice to somebody starting a business is to respect your own boundaries from day one. I sell a variety of baked goods. I specialise in cookies however make cupcakes, cakesicles, tarts and brownies to name a few! For me, it was about being able to stay at home with my daughter as long as possible. When my maternity leave was coming to an end, I needed something that I enjoyed but also would allow me to watch her grow up! • How long have you enjoyed running your small business?
Just over 1 year. • What’s one perk about owning your own business?
Perk is that I get to watch my daughter grow up and spend extra time with her that I may not have been able to if she were at daycare. She’s fascinated and watches me every time I’m making something! •

Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey (née Roberts) – (2013) Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey (née Roberts) class of 2013 welcomed a healthy, happy boy with her husband Adam Starkey on Sunday 7th November 2021. Niklaus Ruud Anthony Starkey was born at 8:00pm at Joondalup Health Campus, weighing 3.225kg and measuring 50cm. Paige Watson (class of 2013) was also present for the labour and delivery, a PMACS middle school friendship still going strong.

Jorjah-Kourtney is also the Chair for the PMACS Alumni Committee, she has done a wonderful job this year helping with events, speaking with the 2021 Year 11 and 12 students. Jorjah-Kourtney also made contact with past alumni for our ‘Happy News’ section and has implemented the new section in The Crest Magazine ‘Spotlight on Small Business’.
Adam Inder – (2010) Jude Elliot Inder was born at 2:54 pm on the 24th of June to PMACS 2010 graduate Adam Inder, and his wife, Zani. Jude will be 6 months old on Christmas Eve, the same date that Adam and Zani's family was told about Zani's pregnancy.
Adam represents the Alumni on the PMACS School Council, Adam is the Deputy Chair. The School is governed locally by a Council comprising a maximum of twelve representatives, including those appointed from the Anglican Church, the ASC, the Parents and Friends’ Association and the Alumni Association. It is the aim of Council to include members with a diverse range of skills, experiences, and attributes. The Council is the governing body for the School. It is the forum for achieving objectives, making sound economic decisions, as well as ensuring good compliance and appropriate risk management measures of the school. This is a great achievement congratulations Adam.

Lily Smith – (2018)
Hi there! My name is Lily Smith, I attended PMACS right from the beginning as a kindergarten student all the way through to year 12 (class of 2018). I have just graduated from UWA with a Bachelor of Biomedical science, majoring in Microbiology and Immunology, as well as Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. However, more excitingly, I recently received and accepted an offer for a place in the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at UWA commencing in 2022! While I’m sure many would struggle to think of anything worse than a career managing foot and ankle problems, I couldn’t be more excited, and I’m relieved to be sharing this news!
Lisa Brier – (2015) I graduated Peter Moyes in 2015, I was stuck on what I wanted to do for a job and what I was passionate about I worked a couple of jobs that I didn't enjoy, while I was figuring it out. In 2017 I decided to enrol into TAFE to do a cert 4 in youth work after travelling around Australia, this is when I found out I was pregnant with my son Noah, so I held of going to TAFE in 2018 I had Noah the 10th of June. When Noah was 2, I again decided to enrol and do my cert 4 in youth work. When doing my cert 4 in youth work it was hard work I had so many units/assessments and a 2-year-old and covid shutting the TAFE down for 5 weeks, I started to doubt that I could complete my course, but with the support from my amazing lectures, I completed the course including role plays with actors (which I hated). I decided to continue and do my diploma where I had the privilege to do volunteer work with young people attending the TAFE, through the GATE program (gaining access to employment and education).

While there I gained skills and knowledge for my future and my love for youth work. After completing my diploma, I thought I was done with studying but decided to do another course double diploma in community services and counselling. The course took 6 months to complete as I had already done some required units in my diploma of youth work. - honestly never felt more stressed in my life then doing this course but it was an amazing experience to learn more in depth about counselling skills and I use some skills/knowledge in my job now. Once I had finished with the double diploma. I got a job with Edmund Rice Centre WA - as a youth worker where I run programs for young people (arts, sport, leadership) and provide support and connect young people to resources/services they may not know about and may need. One thing for sure is even though I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life after high school all I knew is I wanted to help people, finding youth work, and falling in love with it may have been worth all the stress of not knowing what I wanted to do. I have now completed a diploma in youth work along with a double diploma in community services. I have started working in a job as a youth worker and my son is now 3 years old. Once you find what you are passionate about and something you love all the stress and tears are worth it.
Lewis Downie – (2015)
Lewis Downie (Class of 2015) has recently completed his five years of study, obtaining his Bachelor of Engineering at the Australian Maritime College. Congratulations Lewis may your graduation ceremony remind you what an achievement it is to complete your degree and all the best in your future endeavours!

Matthew Hemsworth – (2013) Since school I have had many different jobs and here now at 25, I have only just now figured out what I really want to do with my career. I remember being 16-17 years old in the peak of my schooling, so worried about ATAR and what I was going to do with the rest of my life – was I going to be successful? I thought I had to know by then haha! I never settled in a job or position where I was unhappy, I made sure I always had a goal – a next step in the path and I aimed for it, I did what was necessary for me. Real estate is a great industry with no boundaries, I enjoy helping people of all ages and all backgrounds transact the biggest asset most of us will ever deal with. Buying the coffees was about brand recognition and gaining respect, getting my name out there as an agent – yes, but also as just a nice bloke. Giving without receiving is showing faith that in some way, in others appreciation, it should come back.
Matthew recently visited his local café Little Jaspi in Joondalup and purchased coffee for the next 50 people! A very kind gesture paying it forward.
